mong Whitehorse’s talented music scene are Madi Dixon and Sarah Ott. Since their early teen years, Dixon and Ott have been staples of the local artistic community, performing as part of grand scale events and intimate gigs alike, and each possessing a multi-stylistic skill set. The duo will be playing selections of indie, folk and country covers. This past year, however, they have been noticeably absent from the showcases and festivals held in Whitehorse. “It was nice to be around a lot of other musicians who are into the same things as me,” says Dixon, who is studying for a diploma in music and technology at Selkirk College in Nelson, British Columbia. “But I did miss performing here. I’m excited to play some gigs in town this summer,” she adds. Ott has been studying stage and screen at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. “[Being away has been] really helpful, in a way. Kingston has a big music scene with a variety of styles,” Ott says.

While both musicians have ventured out into places with vibrant music communities, neither one has forgotten what a crucial part their beginnings in the Whitehorse scene have played in their musical careers. “It’s harder to get gigs [in Kingston],” Ott says. “It’s nice to be back and have more opportunities to perform.” Madi Dixon and Sarah Ott have played together as part of various ensembles before, but this summer they will be teaming up as a duo for live performances, mostly consisting of cover songs. Their first gig as a duo will be on July 1s, as part of the Canada Day Celebration at Shipyards Park. Whitehorse’s annual Canada Day concert is gearing up to be a big event this year. With local performances running all day, from 9 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. and a headline appearance from Juno Award winning group July Talk. Some of Whitehorse’s best known and some emerging acts will also be performing. Admission for the concert is free, and

everyone is welcome. There will be free transit all day. Food vendors, children’s activities and other celebrations will also be going on. “It’ll be great to be able to share the stage with the Leaping Feats Dancers,” Ott says. “Leaping Feats was a big part of how I got started and they’ve given me a lot of opportunities.” Dixon and Ott are enthusiastic to kick things off at such a prestigious event. “We’ve got some country, some indie and some folk songs,” Dixon says. Dixon will be singing and playing guitar, and Ott will be singing and playing piano. “We can’t wait. It’s our first time performing together this summer back in Whitehorse,” Dixon says. “The first of what we hope will be many!” Ott adds with a laugh. hen Telek Rogan decided to run for Rendezvous Queen in the 2017 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous competition, she did so as a celebration of who she had become. Talking with me about it, Rogan has no problem articulating the changes that have shaped her. “I’ve done a lot of transitioning in my life. I became a mom, I got a new career, I went back to school and I started making my way as an independent woman,” she says. “I just felt that Rendezvous was the opportunity for me to explore how those transitions and transformations have taken hold and shaped me as a person.” It’s clear from speaking with her that although she was ultimately crowned the 2017 Queen, this experience was more about empowerment and working together with the other queen candidates than anything else. “I enjoyed it and had fun, and got to be part of a group of incredible women, it was a lot of fun,” she says. While being the Rendezvous Queen carries with it a number of interesting social commitments, Rogan sees other opportunities as well. “In 2015 I cut all of my dyed hair off and committed to not dye it or cut it, or do anything to it until it was long enough to donate.” She explains that she had been interested in creating a fundraiser and donating her hair

since high school, but had not had the opportunity. “Then in 2015 I decided it was time, and in a wonderful twist of fate, the year [my natural hair was long enough to donate] actually wound up being the year I ran for Rendezvous Queen. This meant that I could expand my platform for this fundraiser so much further.” With the support of the Rendezvous team as well as Beauty Bar Hair and Esthetics Lounge, Rogan has committed to shave her head in the Rendezvous Tent in Shipyards park after the Canada Day Parade on July 1st. A hairdresser from Beauty Bar will be the one to shave the Queen’s head, ensuring that the hair is handled properly and reaches its destination intact. Rogan has chosen the British Columbia Children’s Hospital’s program Wigs for Kids as the recipient of her hair, and she is raising money to help increase the donation’s impact. According to their website, “Wigs for Kids B.C. provides funding to cover the cost of custommade human-hair wigs for children and teens at B.C. Children’s Hospital who have suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment or other serious illnesses. Donations… also help families pay for medications and feeding supplies that are essential for treatment, but not covered by their medical plan.”

Whether we’re thinking locally or globally, distinguishing if our actions are contributing to the continued health of our planet versus its destruction is an arduous responsibility. The alternative, however, to be remissive of our actions, may be one of the most destructive exercises of all. As conscious beings we have a choice in how, and from which perspective, we make our decisions about the world. This choice, Herriot says, is both a responsibility and a privilege if we are to live an empowered life and in good health with all living things. It is quite simple to point fingers and ask others to change; a more difficult task is to assess our own actions. We are not entitled to anything except ourselves, Herriot says. So, in order to unlock the underpinnings motivating our actions and come to terms with the repercussions they may have, we have to turn inward.

As he walks through different settings on his journey, Herriot finds that keenly observing the yin-yang of our natural landscapes can help generate the type of introspection we need to access this heightened awareness. “The deepest part of our spiritual selves is formed within a matrix of nature and culture,” he writes. And to strike a balance, we have to come to appreciate how life is filled with interdependent forces and harmony is found in “backand-forth reciprocity, that moves in an oscillating, dynamic interchange which over time ensures the equal influence of both polarities.” Our ability to adapt hangs on becoming a “spiritual locavore,” Herriot writes. “Just as the good farmer focuses his attention and labours on the soil

With these, and several related, questions in mind, Saskatchewan-based author Trevor Herriot set out on a small-scale pilgrimage. His book, The Road is How, is a lyrical account of his threeday, 40-mile journey through his home prairie-scape. Evoking the philosopher within, Herriot explores the natural world and its connection with “the malaise of modernity and how to heal from it.” As he guides us through fields, past sloughs and over highways, he examines what it is to be a

Wasting Away in Geezerville with Ken Bolton

Chipped and Faded, but a Transport of Delight

ecently, I waxed nostalgic about my beloved first bicycle, a cherry-red Raleigh three-speed that went missing (temporarily, I still insist) on an August day in 1953. But another bike held just as big a place in my heart for the 19 years or so that I owned it.

This particular bike, a homely blue beauty with a magnesium alloy frame that weighed in at just 22 pounds, came into my possession sometime around 1964. that meant it was the 22nd bike of its kind that Bill Twiddle had made. It had an impressive total of five (or, was it nine?) speeds, most of which I never used. More important, it had ram’shorn handlebars and impossibly skinny, rubberized-canvas racing tires, which made me the envy of my peers and confirmed my status as an ardent nonconformist.

When I bought it, the paint was already fading and chipped, the decal had started to peel, and the handle grips were spongy and split. I didn’t bother decking it out in finery, or adding anything nonessential. This was a work horse, not a show pony. It was also my best friend and companion on one of the most memorable adventures of my life. In the late summer of 1965, after university and I decided we weren’t meant for each other, I set out on my Twiddle from London, Ontario, determined to ride to Vancouver, then talk my way aboard a freighter and take up residency in Australia. Day after soggy day, I pushed myself against the prevailing wind, sleeping in ditches and under picnic tables, with neither tent nor tarp between me and the elements. It was hell, and I loved it. I even grew resigned to the fact that a hard, narrow Brooks B-17 saddle is definitely not a friend of the male anatomy. After 17 gruelling days, I had reached Winnipeg, where I decided to stop and struck Australia off my list of future homes. My Twiddle #22 disappeared sometime in the 1980s, tossed out by a bitter ex-girlfriend. This horse is not the ancestral horse of the ones that roam the Yukon today, as they were introduced much later, however we encourage you to visit the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre in Whitehorse to learn more about this early ice age horse. While you’re at it, hop on over to the Yukon Transportation Museum located within walking distance to the Beringia, to see full sleds and runners that Sid had mentioned.

t is common knowledge that outfitting in the Yukon has been ongoing for over a hundred years and that outfitting horses roam feral, until needed. To this day you can spot the Dickson Outfitter horses roaming near the White River, among other places. Horses for outfitting and personal use have become a Yukon staple and pastime – there’s even a dressage show! Sid van der Meer, the history buff of Beaver Creek, Yukon, has a little part of the horse history displayed at his museum. Several horse bridles and saddles are spread throughout the rooms in Sid’s museum. He may have collected these pieces out of historical curiosity or it may have been Sid’s love of Sgt. Preston and his horse, Rex. “I found the bridles at Silver Creek Lodge, close to Silver City by Kluane Lake. That’s when Johnny Musca ran it, he was Hungarian,” Sid says. “I’ve got two saddles, one old pack, sled runners, an old harness and some bridles.” Curious, I asked Sid about the

sled runners that lay in the courtyard between his private home and the museum. “Those runners acted like skies for a wagon that you build on top. I should have four, but I only have two. I had a verbal agreement with Father Huijbers, but things changed with politics; now the government thinks it’s theirs.” Numerous automobiles, sleds and wagons from Sid’s collection remain housed behind the Kluane Museum of Natural History in Burwash Landing. I asked Sid why horses were being used in the Yukon. “They were for surveying for the Alaska Highway in the 1940s. The army hired local guides and outfitters to help with the surveying all the way from Silver City to Whitehorse. The horses were already here with the outfitters.” It has to be mentioned that the Yukon had its very own horse way back during the Ice Age – Equus

Taking the Sound of the Yukon to a National Stage Yukon music, poetry and voices to be featured during choir trip to Ottawa by Elaine Schiman

s the name suggests, Whitehorse Community Choir (WCC) is all about community. The choir draws upon the people of Whitehorse and surrounding communities for its singers, accompanists, audience, inspiration and, ultimately – the most important thing in the life of a choir – its sound. On July 1, the community choir, along with two associate choirs, the Persephone Singers and the Chamber Choir, will take their sound to Ottawa. As part of the annual Unisong Choral Festival, they will sing with and for choir members and audiences from around the country and the globe. “Unisong has been bringing together choirs from across Canada since 1997,” says director Barb Chamberlin. “It’s an excellent festival that will give our choirs exposure and an awesome experience. Because this is part of the Canada 150 celebration, there will be a lot of “Canada fever” there, and it will be great for Yukoners to be part of that.” The festival’s main event is a mass choir concert on July 1st at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa. The Whitehorse choirs will arrive in the capital city on June 27, just in time for several days of intense rehearsals with hundreds of other singers from across the country. They will be led by guest conductor Lydia Adams, also the artistic director of the Elmer Iseler Singers – who performed in Whitehorse earlier this year – and the Amadeus Choir of Greater To-

ronto. “As a conductor, I have the option of observing or singing in the mass choir,” says Chamberlin. “My plan is to sing; it’s a great way for me to learn as well.” In addition to the mass choral performance, the Whitehorse choirs will perform in other concerts, some under the umbrella of Unisong and some organized by the WCC itself. In the latter category, the Whitehorse choirs will sing on July 2 in Pembroke, a concert shared with the Pembroke Community Choir. It came about through work Chamberlin is currently doing with Conrad Boyce, a former Yukoner now living in Pembroke. On July 6, the two auditioned choirs, the Persephone Singers and the Chamber Choir, will take part in Music and Beyond, a unique classical music and multidisciplinary arts festival focusing on music and its links with other cultural disciplines, including visual art, drama, poetry, dance, architecture, circus, magic, science, comedy, law, food and wine and yoga. Approximately 45 choristers are heading to Ottawa, along with conductor Chamberlin, accompanists Barry Kitchen and Cheryl Wishart, and featured soloist Sylvie Painchaud. And, in a sense, the choir will be taking with them a very significant piece of the Yukon. While in Ontario, they will showcase specially-commissioned songs, some performed in the past and

some which are new to the choirs this year. The songs have a unique Yukon character, because local poets, songwriters and arrangers created them together with well-known Canadian composers and arrangers. “The result is a set of just beautiful songs,” says Chamberlin. One song, called “Crystal Trees,” has lyrics by Yukon poet Lex Widdis, with music by Lydia Adams. The song Annie Lake Road features words and music by Painchaud, arranged by another Yukoner, Olivier de Colombel. This is not the first time the Whitehorse Community Choir has gone to Unisong. The festival began two decades ago, and the choir travelled to Unisong in the year 2000, under the leadership of then-conductor Rachel Grantham, to take part in special celebrations for the turn of the millennium. Choir member Michèle Markley sang at Unisong in 2000 and she is in this year’s Whitehorse contingent, as well. “Part of the reason I’m going again is that I love the experience of being part of a big sound, like a big choir can make,” says Markley. “That’s really why I’ve been a member of the choir in Whitehorse since 1993. It’s so cool being part of that big sound. And, there is also the benefit of working with another conductor, and being ex-

The preparations, the rehearsals in Ottawa and the performances all make for better choirs. And speaking of preparation, there has been a lot of that for everyone involved. Planning for the trip began several years ago, including funding applications to commission new songs. Workshops were held with visiting conductors and choirs, additional rehearsals and performances were scheduled, and the choirs learned about 20 songs, including those for the mass choir performance and their own repertoire.

Chamberlin is grateful for the many individuals, businesses and organizations who have made this project a reality, including support from the Yukon government’s Arts Fund; those who supported fundraising efforts; the Wykes’ Independent Grocery store, which helped the choirs set up a fundraising burger and hot dog stand; and Air North, which gave choir members a special price to fly to Ottawa. Books to Celebrate 150 years of Canada Guess How Much I Love Canada Written by Katrine Crow Illustrated by Mark Kummer Flowerpot Press 32 pages $9.99

n this book, two youngsters, a boy and a girl, trek access the nation with Barry Beaver. On each two page spread, the girl, holding her hand a little farther apart each time, asks the boy, “Do you love Canada THIS much?” The boy responds, “No, I love Canada more than that, because it has…” after which he names a province or territory and begins a colourful list of all the things that this part of the country is known for. There are two or three pictures in each segment, looking a bit like actual photographs that have been “posterized” in Photoshop, and Barry gives us a little tidbit down in the corner of the page. PHOTOS: Dan Davidson For B.C. the dominant drawing on the page is a jumping Orca. Alberta see the kids climbing a mountain. Saskatchewan has the kids feeding a bison. The territories get a single section together, visually dominated by the kids standing by something that suggests Watson Lake’s Sign Post Forest. In Manitoba they must be in Churchill, as they’re snacking with a polar bear. In Ontario they’re in a barrel, going over Niagara Falls. Quebec sees them looking chilly in a Hôtel de Glace. New Brunswick has them playing on giant lobster statue. In Nova Scotia they’re on an old telephone at the Bell Museum. Prince Edward Island, oddly enough, has them biking through an evergreen forest. In Newfoundland and Labrador they’re cavorting with puffins. After the tour, the boy finally says he loves Canada so much, “because it is awesome and it has all this cool stuff…” While I could quibble with some of the choices (Barkerville, but not the Klondike?), the books is colourful and energetic and has a lot of information crammed, but not crowded, into its 32 pages.

n an older note, there are other publications dealing with Canada’s sesquicentennial. One interesting item, which has been in my bathroom since I picked it up in March, is this one: a joint publication by two national magazines, Canadian Geographic and The Walrus. There are 150 small items here; most of them have both an image and some text. Most are three to five on a page, but some range from a page to several pages. While much of it is written by people I take to be staff writers, there is also material by the likes of Dave Bidini, Wade Davis, Terry Fallis, Will Ferguson, Charlotte Gray, Amanda Lang, Alanna Mitchell, Bev Sellars, Kamal Al-Solaylee, Nick Walker and David Suzuki. Here are the first 10 items: Politeness, Maple Leaf, Tim Hortons, Hudson’s Bay Company, Santa Claus, International Boundary, Canadian Armed Forces, Vimy, The Legion. I’m not sure if you can still find this at magazine stands, but it is available through the websites of both magazines. t’s a summer Friday night in Haines Junction, and almost anybody who loves good food, good music and the spectacular St. Elias Mountains knows right where they’d like to be. As the dinner hour draws near, so do the patrons of the Village Bakery and Deli, tucked into a tree-lined corner just a stone’s throw off the highway, at the end of Kluane Street. They gather on the deck, find

a spot at one of the wood-topped tables and, then, the food is ready: a sumptuous array of salads and vegetables, a generous portion of grilled salmon and a sinful bit of dessert. It is a bakery, after all. If you’re lucky, it’s a sunny day, and you’re enjoying the view of trees, sky and mountain peaks. And then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the music starts – about 7 p.m.

It might be bluegrass, rock, jazz, country, folk or classical. It might be a local Yukon singer or band, or travelling musicians who’ve made their way to Haines Junction to play. But whatever it is, you’re in for a treat. The bakery began offering music 25 years ago, as part of the Alaska Highway 50th anniversary celebration. The highway turns 75 this year, and the music is still going strong. Current owners Andrew Marston and

Chelsea Hamilton are relative newcomers, having bought the bakery two years ago from Boyd Campbell. He was one of the original founders of the bakery and is a well-known Yukon musician himself. The music was a daytime event at first, but then in 1998, live music became part of the newly-established Friday Night Salmon Bake. “It’s the most rewarding and fun part of the business,” says Marston. “It’s a pile of work, because we usually get so many people. Some of them are tourists, even the occasional one from down south or abroad who has planned their trip around getting here for the music. They’ll walk in and say ‘Wow, we’re here!’ Just because they’ve heard about it or read about it.” But the Friday Night Salmon Bake is also about community. Yukoners from across the territory plan their summer weekend trips around it, and it’s a special event for Haines Junction locals. “We get to the see the same faces, and share time together, along with live music and good food,” says Marston. “It’s like one big family every Friday. It’s such a cool way for people in the community to gather, catch up on the week, and listen to music. It has an all-ages appeal, and often locals make it a family event to come out and have ice cream and let the kids run around and dance on the deck and have a grand old time.” The new owners have kept the event similar in most ways to what Campbell established in the ’90s. Marston begins setting up the music series early each year, contacting musicians in January or February. Often musicians contact them as well, but Marston says he can’t always accommodate all of them. “We

sometimes do have to turn down musicians or put them on a wait list. Some of them say it’s their favourite gig of the season.” One of those musicians is BJ MacLean, who has played at the bakery every summer since 2003. “It’s relaxed, the people are wonderful, and it’s in a beautiful area,” MacLean says. “Although the bakery has changed hands in recent years, the hospitality remains warm and genuine, and the food continues to be amazing. The audience is lovely and appreciative and often very interactive. I don’t know if it’s the family-style buffet, or the shared table space, or the kids and dogs running about, but it feels like family out there. There’s really nothing else like it.” Some of MacLean’s best memories go back to the days when Campbell was running the bakery. “Some of my favourite times were getting Boyd to take a break from cooking to do a few tunes onstage and I’d get to sing harmony to his beautiful renditions of Stan Rogers’ songs. Another time the audience was listening so intently that I only took a quick 10-minute break in what turned out to be a 3-hour gig. My fingers finally got so sore I had to call it at 10:30 or so.” With that kind of rave review, there’s no end in sight for the Village Bakery music series. Marston and Hamilton have every intention of continuing it into the future. This year’s live music started on May 19 and concludes on September 1. ummer sun brings with it loads of visitors to the various Yukon campgrounds, especially on the long weekends. Those folks joining the campers for the Canada Day long weekend will be missing out! On July 1, Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday. The festivities, therefore, will be 150 times bigger than they have been in the past. There is a lot happening this year, but there are a few gold nuggets that are the must-see-and-do’s. This FREE event is for all ages and has something for everyone. Free and extended transit through the City of Whitehorse bus system will get you to and from Shipyards Park without the hassle of finding a parking spot. This would also be a great time to bike down and take the bus home, as you’ve probably been meaning to do since the sun came out. Festivities start at 9 a.m. and continue non-stop at Shipyards Park until 11:30 p.m. There are

The parade, one of the annual highlights of Canada Day, is put on by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 254 who have organized a spectacular visual display of Canadian pride that you won’t want to miss. You’ll see the Commissioner of the Yukon, the Member of Parliament, the Mayor of Whitehorse and many more dignitaries on parade alongside colourful and interactive floats. The parade starts on Main and 4th will flow down Main Street and Second Ave, ending at Shipyards Park. Follow the parade to the Opening Ceremonies, starting at noon at Shipyards Park. The Commissioner will hand out awards and welcome new citizens to the Canadian family. It is very important to remember that all of the Yukon is bear country and that they are the permanent residents, while we are the visitors

ust two weeks ago – and many times over the past – I’ve heard people say they saw a grizzly bear along the road or out in the wilderness. In many cases I have asked why they were sure it was a grizzly bear and all too often the only reason is that it was brown in colour. Colour does not help to distinguish one type of bear from another as both types of bears come in all the same colours. Being able to tell the difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear is good from a personal knowledge perspective. It is even more important because the bears typically behave differently when they meet a human and identification of species may help understand the bear’s behaviour and avoid an unpleasant and perhaps life-threatening situation. In a close-up meeting a grizzly is generally more apt to be very aggressive while a black bear is more likely to leave the scene and avoid the situation. This is not a hard and fast rule as there are exceptions. Various shades of brown and

cinnamon are very common colours for both species of bears. A smaller brown coloured bear is likely a black bear because a “smaller” grizzly bear will be accompanied by it’s mother as they stay together for three years. Size doesn’t help much as it might be a large black bear or a smaller grizzly bear. Size is very difficult to gauge anyway as you really have nothing to compare it to in order estimate it’s how big it is. The really important clues are as follows: A grizzly has a prominent shoulder hump while the highest part of a black bear’s back is at the rump. However in some postures the grizzly hump is not obvious, while a black bear standing with it’s front paws on a log or rock may appear to have a hump. In either case the posture will change when the bear moves and you will get a better view of the back profile. Grizzly bears have a concave or dished facial profile from the forehead to the nose while a black bear generally has a straight profile from forehead to nose. Grizzly bears grow very long

claws suitable for digging and tearing up stumps, etc. They may be as long as your fingers. Black bears claws are much shorter and are more useful for climbing trees, which is a more common activity for black bears, but can also be done by grizzly bears. It is important to note that you have probably already made a big mistake if you are close enough to any bear to see the length of it’s claws. It is very important to remember that all of the Yukon is bear country and that they are the permanent residents, while we are the visitors. Always be respectful of bears and other wildlife as our presence stresses them. I suggest that you always carry a bear-spray and learn it’s use and limitations. Healing through Massage

ustine Alton is no stranger to health issues. Since she was 19-years-old, the born and raised Yukoner has had a keen interest in psychology, bodywork and holistic health and wellness, but it was her own 10-year struggle with deep seated physical health issues that led Alton to discovering the profound benefits of massage therapy. Alton’s childhood was spent in Dawson City, where she grew up wandering the tailings piles of her father’s gold mine. During her twenties, Alton explored her interest in alternative medicine techniques, experimenting with cranial sacral therapy, massage, Trager, Rolfing, Reiki, energy work and Traditional Chinese Medicine. After meeting her partner and moving to Nova Scotia in 2010, Alton met a massage therapist who opened her eyes to the power of massage therapy. “I had periods of being happy, healthy and wild, and other periods, where I was going to emergency off and on for months,” Alton says. “It was scary. “After a few surgeries, hormone therapy and endometriosis, I had given up and was really struggling.” It was massage therapy that helped turn her health around. Alton went on to complete the 2,200 hour Massage Therapy Program at ICT Northumberland College in Halifax, where she graduated with honours in 2014, despite battling a concussion and shoulder injury in her second year of training. During her studies, she was introduced to a massage technique called John Barnes Myofascial Release. After discovering this innovative treatment method, she was hooked. So what exactly is “myofascial” and why does it matter? Alton explains that “myo” is the abbreviation for muscle and “fascia” is the three-dimensional

Fascia connects all the internal structures like a spider web, even permeating down to a cellular level. It supplies structural support to the body and aids the body’s ability to function and move. When injury and trauma occurs, the fascia loses its elasticity and becomes restricted. Traumas such as repetitive stress injuries, car accidents, surgery or long term poor postural habits can accumulate over time and cause chronic pain, decreased range of motion and dysfunction. Alton found that Myofascial Release not only provided clients with longer lasting results and structural improvements, but allowed a mind-body reconnection following trauma. The philosophy is that cells and tissues act as a storing ground for our lived experiences, and if not properly released, these micro and macro

traumas can be stored deep within the tissues. Alton says the Myofascial Release technique results in a deep release of such experiences. “I thought, this is everything I have been searching for,” Alton says. “It literally seemed to be able to do the impossible.” While there are several different styles of this technique, Alton explains that the John Barnes method is a very specific form in that it is gentle, and works with the tissue rather than against it. The approach involves finding “the money spots” and sustaining gentle pressure and holds on these areas for five minutes or longer. By releasing restrictions, the entire fascial system is able to let go of stress and tension. Alton borrows her mentor John Barnes’ metaphor to explain. “Say you get in a fender bender, do you want someone to just massage your hood where the

dent is, or do you want them to pull the dent out?” As a massage therapist, Alton discovered that massage alone wasn’t enough, and she wanted to take things to the next level. She has completed four John Barnes Myofascial Release courses, including an an unwinding and fascial pelvis course. Alton is the only practitioner in Whitehorse who focuses on this method exclusively and at this level. It is now Alton’s mission to give back to others who struggle with health issues. On May 23rd, she realized this vision by opening up her own massage therapy clinic, Birch Tree Bodyworks. While every body responds differently, Alton says that people can expect to see decrease in chronic pain, anxiety and stress, and physical and psychological issues as well. She hopes to assist people in reconnecting to their bodies and to provide the tools

so people can properly care for themselves without discomfort and pain. “Talk therapy can only go so far. If there is other trauma going on, the body needs to release, as well,” Alton says. Though she sees massage therapy as treating mind, body and spirit, she encourages clients to balance talk therapy and bodywork, if needed. Birchtree Bodyworks is located at 208 Alexander Street in the former East West Clinic. Alton shares her clinic with naturopathic doctor, Gordon Smith. “You walk into this place and get slammed with good energy,” Alton exclaims, attributing this to East West Clinic founders Dr. Xiu-Mei Zhang and the late Dr. Jim Zheng. “I’m so gung-ho. I want to give back to people because I had a team of wonderful people who supported me throughout the years to get to where I am today,” Alton says. “To be able to be that person for somebody and to help them through that dark place, was always my dream. I truly want to make that difference and help individuals live a pain free life.” Birch Tree Bodyworks is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Alton suggests booking appointments one to two weeks in advance, particularly if clients want to engage in a series of bodywork.
