From the East to the Beautiful South

Germany has a lot to offer – here are some picks for everyone by Elke Reinauer

een on history? The Castle Wartburg in Wittenberg in Eastern Germany offers an opportunity to learn about the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation. The castle is the place where Luther translated the bible and lived with his family. The castle’s origins date back to 1067. The castle is hosting an exhibition until November called The Germans and Martin Luther, about the relationship between the German people and the prominent figure in the Protestant Reformation. There are also classical concerts during July and August. If you go, I recommend you add a visit to Leipzig, which is a city that is also in Eastern Germany. The city has a lot to offer when it comes to culture, architecture and museums, opera houses and restaurants. Coffee-lovers should make a stop in Leipzig to visit one of the oldest coffee houses in Europe, called Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. It is as almost as old as Luther’s Reformation (the Reformation was prompted by the publication of Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses, in 1517) – it has been a café since 1556. It also includes a museum where visitors can learn about coffee and bone china. Moving closer to the south you should take a break in the heart of Germany. The Harz Mountains are famous for its witches. Even Goethe was here and got inspiration for his play Faust. Every year in the night from April 30th to May first there is Walpurgisnacht (Walpurgis Night) dance party. It is said that witches gathered and danced at Broken Mountain in the Middle Ages. In reference to this people dress up as witches and dance there every April 30th. At 114 meters Broken Mountain is the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. This is the main gathering place for witches since the 17th century and a lot of

Walk the witches trail that leads you to the top of Broken Mountain and get some information about this place. You will recognise the trail by witch signs along the way. Next stop Baden-Württemberg: finally you are in the beautiful South. Let’s take a trip through Tübingen, one of the most beautiful cities in Baden Württemberg. If boating is your thing, in Tübingen you can just lean back and let others do all the paddling at the River Neckar. Take a Stocherkahn; Stocherkahn is a huge canoe which is driven by a pole. The guides row the boat along the Neckar and tell you interesting stories about Tübingen. This town is famous for its university, the old town with its castle and a lot of cultural events such as Tübinger Sommerinsel, which is a culinary event at an island on the Neckar River where you can eat food from the best restaurants in town. Since you are in Tübingen – which lies on the edge of a biosphere reserve called the Swabian Alb – take a trip there. Recently Swabian Alb was named a Unesco World Heritage Site. Biosphere reserve is a title that is given by Unesco to ecosystems that need to be protected.

You can drive through small towns, enjoy local food and bakeries and learn about traditions. Some regional products include juniper, noodles, lentils, juice and cider. Are you interested in high-tech and want to learn about elevators? Thyssenkrupp Company started to build a tower on the outskirts of Rottweil to test its newest elevators. The tower is 232 metres high – and from the top of the tower you can see all the way to the Swabian Alb. Rottweil made 2017 the year to celebrate its towers – from the newest high tech to the small oldest tower in town (Schwarze Tor), which is 800 years old. In the southern part of Germany, you can travel on to the Lake of Constance. An annual cultural highlight for classical music lovers is the Opera Festival in Bregenz with a huge open air stage at the lake. This year they are showing “Carmen” all through July and August. Calling Terry a “school marm” is technically accurate, but projects the image of a stern woman with her hair in a bun and granny glasses wearing a drab sweater. That’s not Terry. If you had seen her in 1969 walking around San Francisco with some ﬂowers in her hair, you would have been tempted to write a song about her. She was, and still is, tall and willowy (but wiry strong) with long ﬂowing dark hair parted in the centre, and VERY feminine. Atlin was a happening place in those days and the Milos clan was a well known and popular part of the equation even when they didn’t live in town. Terry is from Florida and Stan was an Alaskan, but they met in Marin County, California where Terry was attending university and Stan was building things, including projects for Clint Eastwood for a while – a story he told me at least 100 times. When I engaged him to build a small skid shack for my prospecting business I couldn’t help bugging him by saying, “Now I have something in common with Dirty Harry.” That little tidbit didn’t make Terry’s memoir, but many others did and I was astonished to learn how many things about her and Stan’s life I knew nothing about. For instance, she knows how to make wine out of yard weeds (dandelions). Amazing. In fact, things like that and how to prepare a lynx roast are the gist of this book and the biggest reason I couldn’t put it down once I started. I devoured the whole thing in one overnight reading. Simply stated, it’s the best narrative I’ve ever read about the country lifestyle in the contemporary north and the only one featuring Atlin and the Yukon. She used

very few surnames in telling her yarns, but I recognized most of the characters by their first names even though I might have missed my own if she hadn’t mentioned it at her book signing at Mac’s Fireweed on July 19th. It took her 25 years to get around to telling her story and she is already 24 years into her second marriage and now living in Sicamous, B.C., but she brought Old Atlin rushing back into my brain with a tsunami of memories – most of them funny and warm, only a couple tragic and sad. I wanted more when I finished the book. She mentioned to me that it took two months to write and three years to publish, but nobody messed with her voice, which is the key to short memoirs. Her writing voice sounds just like her speaking voice and that’s a tricky thing to pull off, but it’s what makes this book such a success. You didn’t have to be there at the time to enjoy her perspective on the things she and Stan did while raising their boys, Travis and Brett. Her yarns are universal because a remarkable woman who disappeared for 25 years has returned with a remarkable book. That’s called harmonious serendipity. The Great Klondike International Outhouse Race takes place in Dawson on Aug. 12

e’re dedicated to keeping the Yukon weird,” says Paul Robitaille, the marketing and events manager at the Klondike Visitors Association. He likens the Great Klondike International Outhouse Race to Jim Robb’s notion of the “Colourful Five Per Cent.” “The goal of the event, for me, is to add to that… ﬂavour of Dawson,” he says. “There’s that ‘strange things done under the Midnight Sun’ aspect which might attract some people.” Details were not completely firmed up for this year’s race at

Last year the race got a little bit longer than it has been recently and now covers several city blocks. It will begin at Minto Park, head north on Fifth Avenue to King Street, west to Third Avenue, south to Princess Street, and east up to Fifth Avenue, where it will double back to the park beside the Dawson City Museum. Outhouse frames are available for rent from the KVA for $25 on top of the $50 team registration fee ($10 per person). These are not actual outhouses, but are described on the website as “wheeled metal structures that resemble outdoor latrines. They

Teams pick a theme for themselves and their outhouses and are viewed by a judging panel where they give their best team cheer or limerick for the crowd. According to the rules, “Judges assess teams based on their creativity, design, theme and team spirit,” as well as keeping track of who wins the race. Themes from past years include: the Whizzer of Oz (complete with Dorothy and Toto, too), Pooh and Friends, Dr. Poo’s Turdis (which plays on Dr. Who’s TARDIS), A Bout with the Runs, the Vegemite Express (from Australia), The Peace Movement, the Tiki Beach Bums, The Poo-Lution Team, the Turdles, the Dung Bats and Royal(e) Duty. A typical year has seen six teams sign up for the event, though the KVA would like to see more. The viewing audience, on the other hand, is always large. Last year the event included a water balloon toss and a barbecue, but those details aren’t worked

One former employee of the KVA, Rachel Wiegers, now known for her burlesque prowess as Yukon Chevonne, has told Robitaille that this race was one of the reasons why she moved here. (Wiegers was profiled in Gaby Sgaga’s article “Less is Definitely More” in our April 12, 2017 issue.) Several things are for sure. There will be prizes. There will be laughter. There will be toilet paper. A former contestant, Robitaille says that some of the best times he can remember during his earlier years in Dawson were had hauling an outhouse around the streets.

RCMP Musical Ride Returns Creating new memories 22 years later by Darrell Hookey

“T

he best place to view the ride is from up high,” says Inge Sumanik. “But, for me, it is standing next to the fence and feeling the ground shake.” “The ride” that she refers to is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride. Since 1876, the RCMP have displayed the riders’ abilities to control the power of the horses in a show of cavalry skills, pageantry and stirring music. Sumanik, the co-chair of the host committee that is bringing the musical ride to the Yukon on Aug. 12 and 13 for Canada’s 150th birthday, remembers the last time the 32 horses and their riders were here in 1995: “It was just awesome. They were warming up in front of the SS Klondike and the energy in that space was amazing. “It looks like chaos to someone who doesn’t know much about riding, but minutes later they are absolutely precise and making these precise and connected patterns with music.” Sherillynne Himmelsbach, her co-chair, agrees. “It is pretty special. It has been 20 years since it was here and it could be another 20 years before it comes again.” “And that is why we did this,” Sumanik adds. “Everyone we talked to who had seen it in 1995 has a memory of watching that ride and this is about having that opportunity again. “It was very powerful.” Himmelsbach continues: “It’s tradition; it’s the animal involvement and the relationship between the riders and the animals and the precision involved. “Most people have a memory of seeing the ride at one point in their life.” Vikki Quocksister, the coordinator of the event, said she was checking out the musical ride’s website: “It is fantastic how many hours it takes to train a horse and we were just wowed in 1995.” “Hopefully the sun will shine on us,” says Himmelsbach. “Well, it will happen rain or shine,” replies Quocksister. “But lightning can be an issue,” says Sumanik. “Can you imagine horses and lightning and those lances?” Quocksister asks, as they all laugh. It should be explained that

the three of them are getting a little punchy as they get close to the end of much work and many hours of meetings as they organize the Yukon event on behalf of the North Ridge Community Association. As the host association, it is responsible for covering the expenses of caring for the horses and setting up the McIntyre Ski Stadium for the performance. Any money that is left over at the end will be divided among the non-profit organizations that are helping. They include the Girl Guides, the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club and the Spirit Riders 4-H Club. North Ridge Community Association will use their share to help fund a new indoor dressage arena. “That’s one of the things the musical ride promotes,” says Sumanik. “They always leave good things behind.” The horses will arrive on Aug. 9 in three large trucks. Their home for the next four days will be the Takhini Arena as it is transformed into a stable. The public is welcome to visit the horses, riders and caretakers, when possible, beginning Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to have a chat and take pictures. On Saturday, Aug. 12, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., the Musical Ride will take place, beginning with a pre-

ofta are an elongated meatball grilled on a stick. This version is really simply seasoned, but you can go in a lot of different directions with the ﬂavour. More or less garlic. Some oregano would be delicious. A chili pepper wouldn’t hurt them either. In any case, this recipe is a nice addition to summer grilling, especially as hunting season is just around the corner. And many freezers might be down to just the shelves of ground. Make sure there are lots of toppings available, because the crunch of the fresh vegetables make a perfect counter to the soft pita and grilled meat. METHOD

In a bowl mix together ground meat, parsley, green onions, lemon rind, garlic mix until everything is evenly incorporated. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Divide the ground meat into four portions and shape into 6-inch sausages, place on a metal skewer (or don’t, I had good results just grilling these without any skewers) and drizzle with olive oil.

Heat your grill to high heat and grill kofta until cooked through turning often, about 6 minutes. Let kofta rest for 2-3 minutes before serving with all the trimmings.

The 17th Annual Riverside Arts Festival

Dawson City hosts a bounty of activities for Discovery Day weekend August 17 to 20, including the annual Yukon Riverside Arts Festival

t’s not too often that you get to walk up to an artist in creative process and say, “Excuse me, what are you working on?” The Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, which takes place from August 17th to 20th in Dawson City as part of the Discovery Days Festival, allows you to do just that, and in the most idyllic of settings – right alongside the Yukon River, nestled in the valley of the historic gold rush town. The annual three day event, which is produced by the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC), takes the small-but-thriving artistic community by storm with exhibitions, artist workshops and demonstrations, lectures, public art events, live music and an art market happening in venues throughout Dawson. “It’s an opportunity to see what’s going on artistically in the territory,” says Festival Producer Matthew Sarty, who has been overseeing the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival for six years. This year, KIAC has worked to keep the creative festival as central as possible, with the majority of the events taking place at the open-air Riverside Park and Gazebo right off Front Street. “There is lots going on during Discovery weekend and we want to make it easy to be part of festival,” Sarty says. You can find most visual artists set up riverside, working under tents-turned-studios for the weekend. The idea of the festival is to give the public an opportunity to talk to and work with local artists in an interactive and collaborative way. From weaving, to painting, to

sculpture, and everything in between, there’s a wide range of artistic ﬂavours to choose from. “To hang out with so many Yukon visual artists in one place and to have access to multidisciplinary artists in this way is rare. It’s the accessible and collaborative atmosphere that makes the festival so special.” To kick off the annual arts affair, there will be a gallery hop on Thursday, August 17th, starting at the School of Visual Arts gallery, where 25 local artists will showcase their artistic efforts. From there, art appreciators can traipse around town to check out a number of pop up artist exhibitions around Dawson at several local businesses. The ODD Gallery will also host an opening reception on August 17th for KIAC Artists in Residence Leila Armstrong and Lisa Harmer, who are multimedia artists. Their exhibition, The Natural & The Manufactured 2017: Tall Tales for Short Nights and Warm Planets (curated by Marlaina Buch) will

showcase the collaborative work these artists have created over the course of their KIAC residency. “We see 22 artists over the course of the year, but it’s the only time of year when the residency is expected to result in a show,” Sarty says. “It’s very exciting for the gallery.” Unlike past festivals, this year KIAC has partnered with other organizations to produce “late night offerings” at the KIAC Ballroom, which include a Dawson City Music Festival concert on Friday, August 18th at 10 p.m., featuring musicians Thom Coombes and Naomi Kavka. On Saturday, August 19th at 10 p.m., the Yukon Film Society will present the Rendezvous with Madness Film Tour feature, Ken Foster. The film, directed by Josh Laner, explores the life of Vancouver street artist Ken Foster. Though the Riverside Arts Festival is an all ages event, this portion of the event will be licensed. Artist demonstrations will run all day on Saturday and Sunday, featuring a variety of multidisciplinary Yukon artists. The festival will feature over 12 artist demonstrations and over 20 artisans who will be selling their wares. The live music stage, also located riverside between the artist market and the demonstration tent, will feature 20 plus local Dawson acts, including mainly established musicians, but some upand-coming musicians as well. “It’s an active and fun atmosphere and you can always expect something to be happening,” Sarty says. Don’t let the term all-season fool you, these tires are designed for wet/dry traction and are not meant to operate in the winter. If you are not sure if you have a winter or all-season tire you can look at the sidewall of your tire and try to find a pictograph which is the government designation for winter tires, these tires have passed the testing that is required to be classed as a winter tire!

This pictograph is a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake in the middle and is the only way a tire can be classed as winter.

Katie Thom’s “fine food on four wheels” has arrived to the Whitehorse food truck scene

ulinary queen and DIY entrepreneur Katie Thom might be ﬂying by the seat of her pants, but when she sets her mind on something, she does it, and with force. Though operating a food truck has been on her mind for the last 10 years, it was a decision Thom only made, and fully committed to, three short months ago. On May 17th, the chef opened for business. “I decided and therefore it was happening,” says Thom. “It was as easy as that.” LuLu’s Lunch Truck, a one woman operated fine fare food truck, is Thom’s vision come to fruition. “I liked the idea of a food truck because it’s seasonal and the menu changes constantly, so there is lots of ability to be creative and cook my own vision.” Originally from Ontario, Thom went to culinary school at the University of Guelph, and has been cooking and traveling for the last 15 years. She has been living off and on in Australia for the last 10 years, most recently residing in Chinchilla, Queensland. Two years ago Thom answered the call to come north after seeing a job posting for a chef at the Yukon Suspension Bridge’s Cliff Side Restaurant. Within six days of her interview, Thom was on a plane headed north for Whitehorse from Ontario, her bags still unpacked from her Aussie return. “I only intended to stay for the summer, and then I stayed for the winter, and another summer… and I’m still here!” laughs Thom. This job was Thom’s first when she

arrived in the Yukon and it was a seasonal position (the suspension bridge only runs for summer). She worked a variety of jobs in the interim until she started her food truck this past spring. Thom may have a impressive mixed bag of work experience, from working on a watermelon farm, to a million and a half acre cattle farm, but building a food truck was definitely not listed on her resume. Despite having no prior knowledge in this realm, Thom took on the arduous task of building a food truck this spring. “My friends laugh and say, no one builds a food truck in eight weeks!” Thom did. She had the electrical and propane components done by professionals, and everything else, she did herself. “I knew from a chef’s standpoint the equipment I wanted, and the rest was looking up regulations and requirements,” explains Thom, acknowledging Environmental Health Services as a great resource. LuLu’s Lunch Truck offers an eclectic fine food menu, from jerk pork tacos with mango salsa to chicken in a green curry to the bacon dill pickle grilled cheese sandwich. “There’s no theme, just wholesome good food,” Thom says. You won’t see anything out of a box here. All of Thom’s wholesome food is lovingly made from scratch and her menu offers something for every taste bud. That’s saying something, especially when all the menu planning, shopping, preparation, cooking and cleanup is done by Thom.

She also offers lunch catering as well, which can be ordered off her weekly menu. “It’s well cooked food, and I don’t mean like an overcooked steak,” laughs Thom. “I want people to feel fulfilled after having a delicious, well made meal.” Thom’s menu changes from week to week, depending on what strikes inspiration with the creative chef, and what’s on sale at the grocery store. Sometimes she offers a fan favourite week, where she features popular menu items from previous weeks, like her pork tacos, as requested by numerous lunch goers. “It’s the chef’s equivalent of art,” she says. “I get anxiety over the weekly menu reveal. I wonder, are people going to like it? Is it boring?

“Everyone is artistic in their own way. I can’t draw to save my life and my penmanship is atrocious, but I can be creative with food.” LuLu’s Lunch Truck can be found at the Waterfront Wharf in front of MacBride Museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday to Friday. She will also be at the Atlin and Dawson City music festivals, and private functions. Thom will run her seasonal venture, weather dependent, until September. Even among those I had never met previously, there were enough similarities in mannerisms, facial features, speaking and laughing patterns, that I frequently had to remind myself that this was my brother’s clan, not my parents’ or grandparents’

s family reunions go, the event I attended in Ontario’s Georgian Bay district on a recent weekend was a fairly small-scale affair. At its peak, a mere 24 people were in attendance. Officially, it wasn’t really a reunion, just a gathering in Canada’s quintessential cottage country to mark my oldest brother’s 80th birthday. Judging by the comments I receive, I realize that many regular readers of this column have already surpassed that mark by several years, maybe even a decade or more. If not, they have siblings, spouses, or friends in the top echelons of Geezerhood. Yet, even at the relatively advanced age of 74, I found myself awestruck by the fact that someone I grew up with has reached the positively ancient age of 80. There were only three generations present for the occasion. A fourth is due to make its debut in a few weeks’ time. Apart from the birthday boy and his wife, I was the sole representative of the “older” generation.

What made this different from other family reunions I’ve attended was that, as a nondescendent of the reigning clan patriarch and matriarch, I really didn’t belong there. There were common genes, sure, but no direct lineage. Still, surrounded by nieces and great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews, rather than by siblings and cousins, I felt completely at home. Even among those I had never met previously, there were enough similarities in mannerisms, facial features, speaking and laughing patterns, that I frequently had to remind myself that this was my brother’s clan, not my parents’ or grandparents’. If I closed my eyes, I could almost imagine being surrounded by my other brother’s offspring, or my sister’s. Or even my own children and grandchildren. Is it nature or nurture that makes relatives prepare food the same way, wash dishes the same way, exhibit the same sense of humour, engage in the same teasing banter, hold the same

conversations, and enjoy the same games? Why does a 6-year-old greatniece dog paddling around the dock bring to mind long, happy days of swimming with my older sister at a different, but similar, cottage almost 70 years ago? Why does an 11-year-old playing cribbage with his old man suddenly remind me of so many happy matches with my own father, or between my father and his in their day? And why do cousins who may see each other only once a year, or even less, get up to the same harmless mischief, as if they were long-time and regular coconspirators? I don’t expect to unravel these mysteries anytime soon, but I’m happy to observe them in action from time to time. What’s that old maxim about the relative viscosity of blood versus water? ou wouldn’t think a person could go ghost hunting in the middle of the day in the middle of summer, but MacBride Museum offers six to 12-year-olds a chance to do just that from August 14 to 18. “To hunt ghosts, and tell Yukon ghost stories, you need the historical perspective,” says Angela Drainville, manager of museums programs and development. “There’s a quest involved in creating the story and working in the extra elements unique to ghosts.” The popular camp fosters research and “encourages kids to be unique” with plenty of fresh air, play and physical activities. It takes place at the Whitehorse Copper Mine site and the Copperbelt Railway and Mining Museum, located two kilometres north of Two Mile Hill on the Alaska Highway. This year’s theme commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Pueblo Mine Cave-in at Whitehorse Copper Mine. “It’s the first time the disaster has been incorporated in the program,” says Drainville. Actual events reveal plenty of real life ghosts of our past. Between 1906 and 1917 the Atlas Mining Company’s Pueblo deposit produced 150,000 tons of copper-silver ore. Respected mining columnist Jane Gaffin (19422000) compiled her knowledge in a document titled “A Glimpse at the Whitehorse Copperbelt”. In it she wrote: “The Pueblo was a ‘wet mine.’ The ground, soft and

e are proud and excited to be founding the Yukon’s only dedicated art and music festival for children,” says Darlene Sillery, one of the five main organizers of the Augusto! Children’s Festival in Haines Junction this weekend. “We have a great variety of workshops and an excellent group of presenters, including visual artists, performing artists and other activity leaders.” This is the Festival’s first year and and interest in the project on the part of Yukon artists exceeded Sillery’s expectations. “We have an absolutely great program, a variety of activities and an excellent group of presenters both in visual and performing arts. The lineup turned out better than I’d ever imagined,” she says. The Festival features a Friday night dance with Claire Ness and the Swing Sets and a performance by the traditional Dakwäkäda Dancers. There’s a Saturday night performance with Tippy Agogo (who performs on instruments made from recycled goods) followed by Flyin’ Bob (who Sillery describes as a “one man circus”) who will present his “Articulate Nonsense” show. During the daytime there will be 13 different types of workshops planned for attendees and their parents to choose from, such as performing arts, visual arts, instrument making, circus skills, hula hoop making, cartooning, felting and intro to judo or robotics. Workshops are designed for kids ages five to 12. There’s a separate “toddler town” for children ages four and under with

structured activities. More activities will include face painting, button making with parks Canada, planting marigolds and learning how to repair broken toys. Peripheral activities include roving performers and a few surprises. Sillery says organizers want to put Haines Junction on the map with this new Yukon festival. “Haines Junction has proven capacity and experience to host large events and our existing demographic, which has recently seen a significant shift to young families and active grandparents, is the perfect fit,” says Sillery. She says that the growing number of young families with children in the community will benefit from the festival and she’s also hoping that visitors will attend from around the territory. “Haines Junction is an easy getaway for folks from Whitehorse and other adjacent communities up the north Alaska Highway,” she says. “For people in Atlin and Haines, it is a great opportunity for Haines Junction to reciprocate the pleasure many of us have felt attending both the Atlin Arts and Music Festival and the Southeast Alaska State Fair.” The theme of the festival this year is zero waste and there will be manned stations for compost and recycling. Encouraging children to develop skillsets like repairing old belongings and reusing materials inspires many of the activities and performances too. The festival will provide hot and cold drinks for all children and accompanying adults. No bottled water or bottled drinks will be sold on site. A “Kid’s Café” will be operating in the Atrium during the daytime workshop hours on Saturday and Sunday. Weekend passes for ages five to 12 include a $5 credit at the Kid’s Café and children under two years old attend for free. “Remember to bring your tickets,” says Sillery, “...these will be exchanged for a wristband at the gate. Also be sure to bring your own grownup!” Children participating in the festival must be accompanied by an adult. Sillery is thrilled with the level of community involvement in the project. “We have been fortunate to have a lot of support from [Champagne and Aishihik First Nations] Chief and Council, Mayor and Council, and several local businesses and community organizations who have really stepped up to help ensure this first annual festival is successful!” Organizers are hoping that the project will become an annual event. “There are so many festivals in the Yukon. It’s time for a dedicated kids festival and Haines Junction is the perfect place,” says Sillery. For more information or to purchase tickets visit AugustoKids.ca.
