Taking the reins at What’s Up

by Danny Macdonald

F

all has arrived and Yukoners have all started to settle into our winter routines. This busy time of year seems like the perfect time to take over as editor of What’s Up Yukon. I’m excited for the challenge and have already had some great ideas sent my way, so stay tuned over the coming months as we continue to give you the best scoops on the Yukon cultural scene. I feel that I’m expected to impart pearls of wisdom or charming witticisms during my inaugural editorial, so that a high quality is established. But as I started looking through our files and submissions, I discovered some different inspiration. I found a unique submission that we don’t often receive: a handwritten letter to the editor inquiring about pen pals and offering to share German recipes. I think that we have readers out there who’d love to connect with a visitor who was enchanted by their trip North. I’d like to share it with you. August 21, 2017

Dear Lord of Letters! I found your newsletter in Whitehorse during a six and a half weeks long vacation in Alaska/ USA and North Canada. Because I like it to write, I want to ask for pen pals. Maybe you can put my address in the news? Also, if you wish, I could write German recipes for your newspaper. I am German, married, two kids, five grandkids. I have a lot of hobbies and hate computers! I was born in December 08, 1948. My story about going to Alaska: Dieter, my husband, and I married July 25, 1969. It was a very warm and sunny day. One year later at our first anniversary it was very warm again. When we celebrated this special event, I said to Dieter, “Our 25th wedding anniversary

Brigitta Schorn’s hand written letter to What’s Up Yukon we will spend in Alaska. There it is cold, snow, and maybe we could even see ice.” Well one year before my husband did ask me whether we should go to Alaska. “Of course honey, all people know that we want to go there,” I answered. So we went to Alaska where we wore shorts and shirts because it was hot! But nevertheless, we both fell in love with Alaska and (the) Yukon. I don’t know how often we were there. In this summer, we drove for the third time the Dalton Highway. Three years ago (we drove) for the third time the Dempster Highway and we must do it again because of this new extension. Dear Lord of Letters, if you publish my story please may I get a copy? I am looking forward to hearing/reading from you. Best wishes, Brigitta Schorn

ixteen of the country’s top prostate researchers are meeting in Whitehorse this month and it’s partly because of Mike Thorpe. “Mike is very much responsible for this,” said Garry Janz, president of Ride for Dad – a non-profit organization that raises money and awareness about prostate cancer. Thorpe is co-chair of the Whitehorse branch. “Without Mike’s enthusiasm, it may never have happened.” That enthusiasm is part of the reason Thorpe was given a national volunteer award by the organization this year. Thorpe said he was surprised by the local board when they told him, during a conference call with the national body, that he’d been chosen as a recipient of the volunteer award, which is given out to a handful of Ride for Dad board members each year. “I appreciate it a lot,” Thorpe said. “People who volunteer don’t typically volunteer for recognition, but it’s nice to get it when you do. It’s always appreciated.” Janz said Thorpe was nominated because he’s been an outstanding member of the organization ever since he became involved. Thorpe moved to the Yukon almost 15 years ago, to take over the Whitehorse McDonald’s. Around the same time, he developed an

hey met as teenagers at an improv comedy club called Lucifer’s in Calgary, Alberta. Now, more than two decades later, they’ve just launched their seventh season performing together weekly for a coast-tocoast-to-coast audience. Peter Oldring and Pat Kelly are the brains – and voices – behind This Is That, a half-hour program of legitimately illegitimate interviews and mockumentaries that airs Saturday mornings on CBC Radio One public broadcaster’s AM band. Think of it as a faux version of As It Happens, with a soupçon of Sunday Edition and Ideas thrown in for good measure. But is it satire, or spoof? “No one’s ever really asked us that. When we started the show, I don’t think we necessarily came at it with the intention of having a satirical point of view at all,” Kelly said. “Our love, as comedians, was to mimic and mock some familiar sounds that we had grown up with on CBC. We just really wanted to do an impression of some of those tones you hear.” While there is a satirical undercurrent to what he and Oldring do, Kelly said they aren’t interested in doing topical political satire. “That just doesn’t excite us much. But the internet age has informed our satire. Everybody’s opinion is being heard nowadays on the internet, and I think that really does provide us with a ton of inspiration for things we can satirize,” he says. In an era obsessed by the notion of “fake” news, when the unwary frequently find themselves sucked in by mock-news sites such as The Onion, Beaverton and The Manatee, Kelly is unapologetic about what he and Oldring serve up to CBC listeners. “I don’t think people are spending the time to really critically analyze what they’re consuming. That’s not our fault,” he said. “If some of our stuff sneaks into that wheelhouse, that’s okay. I think it’s a testament to the deadpan nature of our show, and that’s something we still appreciate doing. Hopefully, it’s our believable performances that are tricking people, as opposed to the salacious headline.” Kelly spoke with What’s Up Yukon just moments after CBC aired a This Is That sketch involving a Las Vegas entrepreneur announcing plans to open a casino for children aged eight and over.

show is scripted, Kelly says most of it is impromptu. “Generally, we improvise I would say 90 per cent of the dialogue. We have the premises. We write down the introduction and maybe a couple of questions, but then the entire thing is improvised,” he says. “We maybe do two takes of it. If the first one is a colossal bomb, or we’re not finding the right shape of it, then we’ll talk about it a little bit and do it again, then maybe chop together a five- or six-minute interview out of it.” Recently, Kelly and Oldring have moved beyond the confines of the CBC studio in Vancouver, where they record each week’s episode, to take live versions of the show on the road. “We’re able to unleash it a little bit and have a little bit more fun. They [live audiences] are really amazed to find out that Peter and I do, like, 80 per cent of the voices. The live show is just these two guys bouncing around and having fun with each other,” Kelly says. “It’s quite rewarding for the audience. But for us, as comedians, it’s fun to get in front of a crowd and get the laughter. When you’re working radio, you don’t get that luxury.” This Is That will perform at the Yukon Arts Centre at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 13. For more information, go to www.YukonArtsCentre.com. “You know you’re going to catch holy old hell for that one, don’t you?” WUY asked. “There are certainly some stories where you just get the feeling it’s definitely going to push some buttons. And that one, I believe, will,” Kelly admitted. One of the show’s regular features is to play listeners’ responses to what they’ve heard on a previous show. But are those comments planted, or legitimate? “They’re all legit. Those are all real people. And Chris Kelly [the show’s producer, no relation to Pat], poor bastard, has to get in front of that answering machine every Saturday and listen to about two hours of calls.” Many people still get upset when they hear an outrageous interview they think is the straight goods. “There’s certainly still people who are being reactionary in a completely legitimate way. I think that’s a result of them getting into the car halfway through, or whatever,” Kelly said. But, after six years, most listeners have figured out that the show is a spoof. “There’s some very talented Canadians out there who know what the show is about, and they take great pleasure from calling in, pretending to be people who are irate,” Kelly said. “If somebody puts on a good performance, and we can’t really tell if it’s a real person or not, they definitely make it into the show. But the calls have always been real.” And, while some of each week’s

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

Hunting Season Recipes T

he way to spoil a successful hunt is to cook your harvest in the same way as you would farm raised animals. A good idea is to have a qualified butcher cut the meat up properly and follow big game cooking procedures, not in the manner that domestic animals are cooked for the table. The key to getting rid of the wild taste is to remove as much of the sinew and fat in the meat prior to cooking.

Venison Meat Loaf

2 lb of ground venison 1 can tomatoes ½ cup dry bread crumbs ½ cup chopped white onions 2 tsp chopped parsley 1 well-beaten egg 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp salt, dash of pepper Combine all ingredients, mix well, and shape into a loaf. Place in shallow baking dish. Bake in a pre-heated moderate oven at 350F for one and a half hours.

The Best Venison Steak

2 large venison steaks 1-½ cups water ½ cup dry wine ½ pkg. onion soup mix 2 tbsp butter salt and pepper to taste 2 large carrots peeled and sliced 2 tbsp cornstarch in ¼ cup of water Melt butter in Dutch oven or a large, deep frying pan, brown the venison and remove. Add water, wine, onion soup mix and carrots. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook until tender. Add meat and thicken with cornstarch and water, simmer until meat is cooked and tender (about one hour).

½ cup water 4-lb moose roast 4 bay leaves 2 tsp shortening Combine the first five ingredients and rub into roast, making sure to cover the entire roast. Sear well in shortening. Add remaining ingredients and cook for approximately 3 hours at 350F.

Barbecue Bear Tenderloin

About a 3–4 lb bear tender loin Preparing a sauce: ¾ cup white vinegar ¼ tsp pepper ¾ cup catsup 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 cup water ¼ tsp. Tabasco sauce 1 white onion chopped 3 tbsp brown sugar 1 garlic clove minced 1 tsp dry mustard 1 tsp. salt Slice meat to ½ inch pieces and cook for 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 350F. At the same time, mix the sauce ingredients together and cook for 25 minutes at medium heat. Pour liquid off meat. Cover with sauce and cook for 1 hour.

Roast Shoulder of Bear

5-8 pounds of bear shoulder meat 3 whole garlic cloves 2 tbsp bacon drippings 2 crushed bay leaves 2 large white onions 1 cup beef stock 3 strips of celery with leaves 1 cup red wine 1 carrot peeled salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp mixed herbs

Moose Pot Roast

1 weighed moose roast, 1 pkg. onion soup. Be sure to trim all the fat and tissue from roast. Place in a roaster, cover with all ingredients. Roast covered for 20 minutes per pound at 350F. Baste occasionally. Gradually add 1 cup of sherry during basting.

Heat bacon drippings in large skillet. Brown meat on all sides. Season with salt and pepper in roasting pan. Add vegetables and herbs. Add liquids. Cover lightly and bake in oven at 225F oven for 8 hours. Do not uncover during cooking time. When done, remove roast to a heated platter. Strain stock, discarding vegetables and herbs. Skim fat off stock and thicken with gravy. This will make about 8 servings.

Trapper’s Beaver Roast

Sauce A: 1-½ cup melted butter 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp lemon juice Sauce B: ½ cup melted butter ¼ cup brown sugar 2 tsp dry mustard 1 cup orange marmalade Strip beaver of all fat. Cut inside of legs and remove sinews. Soak overnight, then parboil twice in fresh water to remove all fat. Roast at 300F for about 1-½ hours. Baste with sauce A or sauce B. If using sauce B, just before roast is finished, baste with 1 cup orange marmalade. Beaver and muskrat are very enjoyable, tasty meats. Please do not leave to waste. Sit family down and enjoy. Local Female Entrepreneurs Share

Stephanie Dixon Stephanie Dixon launched her Motivational Coaching Business this year. Living an unconventional lifestyle as an ambassador for the Canadian Paralympic Committee and other Canadian sport organizations since retiring as a competitive swimmer, Dixon found it a challenge to find a career working for someone else. She knew she wanted to work in the health and wellness industry, but wanted something that offered the flexibility to travel and continue her global work. Dixon accidentally found out that owning a business was exactly what she was made to do. “I thought to work for yourself that you needed to be Type A, businessminded (love spreadsheets) or an entrepreneur,” she says. “I was the last person I would have described as either of those things.”

Their Best Business Advice The SMRT POP UPS event called 8 Things: Female Entrepreneurs Share Their Best Business Advice takes place Oct. 18 at Baked Café at 7 p.m. by Selene Vakharia and Sofia Fortin

ondering how to get your business from side hustle to full time? Struggling with balancing kids, hobbies and relationships, while building your brand? Looking for inspiration and motivation to get you through the inevitable blocks and challenges that comes with being an entrepreneur? Women face unique challenges when launching into the world of business. For many, a community and network of support, encouragement and learning can help them face these challenges – whether starting out or ready to take a business to the next level. An event taking place on Oct. 18 at Baked Café features seven female entrepreneurs all at different stages and places in their businesses ready to share their advice and hard lessons

learned. The event is called 8 Things: Female Entrepreneurs Share Their Best Business Advice, and it will feature: Stephanie Dixon (Stephanie Dixon Motivational Coaching), Patti Balsillie (Patti Balsillie Management Consulting), Brianne Bremner (GBP Creative), Anne Lewis (The Vaxandi Group), Emma Barr (Emma Barr Fine Art), and Emily Payne and Erin Nicolardi (Rivers to Ridges). Hosted by SMRT POP UPS, the event is a follow up to the SMRT Women series that took place March 8 this year, which offered a full day of coaching, learning and connecting specifically for female entrepreneurs.

Emma Barr has been in the business of fine art for over a decade. Barr found that while she loved the freedom of being her own boss, it could also be a challenge. “Having too much freedom allows for laziness or loose structure,” says Barr. “Sometimes I don’t use my time wisely enough and don’t end up getting much done in the day.” As she has grown her business, Barr has used tools and focused goals to overcome this challenge and stay motivated.

Patti Balsillie Patti Balsillie has been helping businesses, people, communities and organizations for 27 years in the Yukon. She leads a multi-million dollar trust for Canada’s North, serves tourism in Canada as a board member of Destination Canada and runs a successful consulting company with clients across all sectors, governments and First Nations communities across Canada. Her best business advice comes from dozens of others. The experiences and perspectives of these many influencers have shaped her own experiences, values, and approach.

Erin Nicolardi Erin Nicolardi runs Rivers to Ridges – an experiential outdoor education program for children and adults – with Emily Payne. Nicolardi and Payne met when they both worked through the same school. When a vehicle breakdown and a snowstorm stranded them at a B‘n’B in Watson Lake, they discovered a common passion for experiential nature-based programming, and from there their business dreams began. Nicolardi and Payne have found parallel lessons in starting many campfires that have helped their business succeed and grow.

While the number of wine vendors attending has been as high as 25, this year 21 vendors will be in attendance. The space seems able to accommodate that number without overcrowding. Wine vendors use the festival to promote products not sold here, so the eight to 10 wines they each PHOTO: TKS Photography & Design display will be a mix of listed wines and new products. ine-lovers will descend on the Yukon Convention Centre on Thursday, October 19, for the 26th edition of the Rendezvous Rotary Wine Festival. These grape connoisseurs will have over 200 wines available for sampling and tasting. Those lucky enough to hold one of the 100 priority tasting tickets secured one of the hottest tickets in town. The day that they went on sale at 9 a.m., they had sold out by 2 p.m. The wine festival is the major annual fundraiser for the Rendez-

are appearing at their first wine festival. “The vendors really view their support for us as part of their community contributions,” Kennedy said. “This year they’ve gone a step further and each vendor will be bringing up a dozen socks and toothbrushes to add to our annual donation to the Blood Ties, Four Directions Outreach Van.” Wine-lovers know that with good wine, goes good food and the wine festival prepares a fantastic spread of food pairings for attendees. “This year Air North will be back and outdo themselves as they always do,” Kennedy said. “The Wayfarer Oyster Bar will be serving their oysters and that wouldn’t have happened without support from Skookum Asphalt. The Claim will be serving their amazing recipes and we will have the Yukon College Culinary Arts program there too.” The Rotary club has a special connection to the culinary program at the college. Part of the Rotary philosophy is vocational service and education, so they provide a scholarship to the program. The organizing committee attempts to improve things each year particularly with layout and traffic flow on the floor. They work to reduce wait times and changes like the self-serve coat check that was introduced last year will be back for this year’s event. The priority tasting was another change that was introduced three years ago to reduce pressure on the event and

has become hugely popular. Some of this year’s changes will be around the Yukon Liquor Corporation’s Wine Shop. The corporation has made changes to their layout in the hopes of speeding up purchasing. They are looking for ways to improve the experience for the festival-goers. “One item they introduced a few years ago, but not many people know about, is the personal box service at the store,” said Kennedy. “If you plan to purchase wine, at the start of the night you can get a box at the Wine Shop with your name on it and add to it all night. That way if you aren’t walking around with a shopping cart right at the end of the night. You go collect your box and pay, which really speeds up the process.” Some long-time attendees may note that the wine festival is earlier in this year’s calendar. That change is here to stay. “We moved it up earlier in the year because it fits better in the Canadian wine festival calendar,” Kennedy said. “Next year, we are scheduled for Thursday, October 18.” Although they won’t be on sale until next September, if you want to get one of those priority tasting tickets for next year, perhaps it’s time to start thinking about it now. he Yukon Beer Festival is returning for its fourth year on October 13 and 14, with proceeds benefitting the Boys and Girls Club of Whitehorse. Local beer aficionados will be able to taste beer

from more than a dozen brewers and distributors travelling to the festival from across Canada, as well as local Yukon brewers like Winterlong and Yukon Brewing.

There will likely be more than a hundred beers featured at the festival, from 30+ breweries. This year’s selection includes beers from Quebec, Ontario, the United States and Denmark. Cider tables will be returning again this year, with some fan favourites, including Sea Cider and Tieton, and some new ones from Central City, Left Field Cider Co., Uncommon Cider Co., and Bulwark Traditional Craft Cider. While the best bet for glutenfree imbibing is check out the cider selection, which will feature some new ciders, including Central City Hopping Mad Cider, Scenic Road Nearly Dry Cider and Uncommon Apple Haskap Cider, there will also be a few gluten free beer options from Brunehaut and Groundbreaker. The Festival will be offering connoisseur packages again this year, which includes a regular ticket to the festival, a connoisseur tasting glass and 8 beer tokens, as well as access to a VIP tasting with a limited number of attendees that takes place an hour before the doors open to the general public. Luke Legault from the Wandering Bison is doing the catering, serving locally sourced snacks, including pulled pork sandwiches, wedge fry poutine and smoked chicken chili. Vegan options will be also be available. The Yukon Beer Festival is offering a fairly broad range of styles of beer, from pilsners to imperial stouts, Belgians, saisons and the latest style favourite: sours.

This year, there will be smaller quantities of all the beers, which means you will need to find the ones you are interested in and try those first. The team behind the festival are trying to have a list of beers available for perusing in the days before the event. The selection of beers has expanded to include Collective Arts (Ontario), Charlevoix (Quebec), Bilboquet (Quebec), Powell Street (B.C.), and Modern Times (U.S.), plus many others. Brewers that haven’t been here before are also coming to the festival this year, such as Category 12 and Persephone, both from B.C. This year’s festival is being organized by a combination of Yukon Beer Festival veterans as well as a few fresh faces. The Yukon Beer Festival relies heavily on volunteers to help pull off the event. They tend to have 40 volunteers pouring beer, five helping at the front taking tickets, and a few replenishing water and keeping tables stocked inside the tasting room. “People are really generous with their time and we haven’t had any issues finding volunteers,” said society president Kaori Torigai. Each volunteer is offered a ticket for half price on the night they are not helping out at the event. The event is capped at 500 people each night, so if you’ve got your heart set on attending this year don’t delay getting your ticket.

Make sure you’ve got a designated driver or the number of a taxi company before you start imbibing. Here are the details for this year’s event: The Yukon Beer Festival takes place Friday, Oct.13 and Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Connoisseur Tasting Package – advance admission from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for VIP tasting access – access to regular tasting event from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. – Yukon Beer Festival tasting glass – 8 beer tokens Regular Tasting Ticket – access to regular tasting event from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. – Yukon Beer Festival tasting glass – 5 beer tokens For more information go to www.YukonBeerFestival. com or contact info@YukonBeerFestival.com. ikujaga is a traditional Japanese style stew, usually made with thinly-sliced beef and potatoes and seasoned with sweetened soy sauce. While this version is more of an homage to the classic – substituting bison for beef and squash for potatoes – the sweet and savory flavours of the stew make this a perfect dish for fall. Anyone who cooks game knows that, depending on the animal you harvest, or have in your freezer, cooking times may vary; just plan accordingly. The bison I used in this recipe was a big old guy who took closer to two hours to get lovely and tender. This stew, like most stews, benefits from sitting a day or two in the fridge. So feel free to make it on the weekend and serve it midweek. Serves 4

Late Fall Season in Kluane National Park

St. Elias Lake in October – a cold, but astonishing place for capturing great pictures

A paradise for amateur photographers

T

he colourful fall season is over very early in the Yukon – much earlier than in my home country, Switzerland. But I found that the month of October is also very attractive for an amateur photographer like me, even if the coloured leaves have almost all fallen to the ground. Here are some suggestions for day trips or overnight trips to the Kluane National Park with some great photo opportunities.

St. Elias Lake:

Awesome Reflections It’s an easy 7.6 km (4.8 mile) return hiking trip to St. Elias Lake, starting at 60 km (37 miles) south of Haines Junction on the Haines Highway. The sun is coming up late on St. Elias Lake in October, but once it is here the reflections of the surrounding mountains are awesome. On a calm day, stop for a picture of reflecting mountains on Dezadeash Lake on your drive back to Haines Junction.

Kathleen Lake:

Sunrays Over the Mountains Kathleen Lake is located 27 km (17 miles) south of Haines Junction on the Haines Highway. Of course, great shots of the turquoise coloured lake can be captured if you walk to the King’s Throne or part of the Cottonwood Trail. But you can also take special pictures right from the shore close to the parking lot. In the afternoon in October, the sun is playing hide and seek behind the surrounding mountains, which makes an excellent photo opportunity for catching some sunrays peeking over the mountains.

by Yvonne Mueller some reflections. Kathleen Lake is easily accessible by car and that’s why it is an ideal lake to capture the northern lights both dancing in the sky and in the lake. Make it an Overnight Trip There are several options to spend the night in Haines Junction if you want to make it an overnight trip. In case you are looking for a place even closer to the above-mentioned lakes, Kluane Log Cabin might be the perfect choice for you. The simple log cabin is only a five minutes drive away from Kathleen Lake and sleeps four people.

Local songwriter releases debut album

Lara Lewis’s album release party for Lov Lavatic takes place Oct. 19 at The Old Firehall by Amy Kenny says, noting that she’s happy for the foundation classical gave her in terms of theory. “For me, writing music, and learning other people’s songs, and loosening up when I was playing, and not worrying so much about making mistakes was kind of a different avenue to explore.” Though Lewis has been playing consistently since those days, she stuck to making athome demos until

ast year Lara Lewis took some time off rocks to focus on rock. Now the Whitehorse-based geologist/songwriter is gearing up to release her first full-length album, Lov Lavatic, on Thursday, Oct. 19 at The Old Fire Hall. “It conflicts with winefest,” Lewis laughs. Her release party takes place on the same night as the Rendezvous Rotary Club Wine and Food Festival. “So I’m forcing my friends to choose between their love of wine and their love of me.” For Lewis, born in Yellowknife, the path to the record was a circuitous one. She studied classical piano for over a decade before walking away from music while she was in university. It was 10 years before she started playing again. Lewis says credit for that goes to the Yukon. When she moved to the territory in 2000, she says it seemed like everyone she met was making music. She looked around and thought, I could do that. Lewis started playing again, got involved with other musicians, and forgot her classical training in favour of a less structured approach to music. “When you’re brought up in that environment of perfection and exactness… you don’t learn to use your ears as well,” she

ceived a professional recording grant from the Film and Sound Commission in 2016, she enlisted the help of local producer Jordy Walker. Lewis credits Walker with giving her record some of its sound. Lov Lavatic focuses on the volatility of relationships and she says the starting point for all her songs was the drum machine she bought a couple years ago. “I had melodic riffs that I

Lov Lavatic focuses on the volatility of relationships last year – her first trip into the studio as a solo artist. She says it took her a while to get to a point where she felt confident enough about her songwriting to record a full album. In 2013, while working her cur-

rent job as a geologist with the Yukon Government, she applied for a deferred eight-month leave for 2016, and set a goal for herself – have that confidence by the time the leave rolls around. When she applied for and re-

captured and recorded as I was piecing things together, Frankenstein-style, and songs started to emerge,” she says of the eclectic mix of blues, rock and more mellow tunes that came out of the process.

“Jordy really helped me with turning the songs into real songs. (He’d ask) ‘Where is your chorus? This isn’t a song,’” she says. “He was great in making me examine the songs and figure out how to make them more palatable. He did all the arranging.” Her songs changed as she learned in the studio about adding textures, transitions and layers to different sections. As well, using a Rhodes instead of a stand-up piano altered the sonic palette of the songs. The recording experience may influence the next record as well. Lewis says Walker’s guitar lines inspired her to buy an electric guitar – one she’ll spend some time getting to know this winter. Contributing musicians include Daniel Bouck (bass), Danette Readman (electric guitar), Graeme Peters (drums) and Jordy Walker (producer) on electric guitar. Lewis will tour northern B.C. in support of the record next year. In the meantime, tickets for the release party are $20 each and are available through the Yukon Arts Centre. Amy Kenny is a writer and artist living in Whitehorse. She likes books, bikes and being outside.

Celebrating 10 years at Climate

Clothing

Climate Clothing is hosting a 10th anniversary celebration on Oct. 13 with appetizers, cocktails, live music and prizes

by Aislinn Cornett

F

rom pizzerias, to cell service providers, to gyms and cheese shops, the landscape at Horwoods Mall has changed a lot over the past decade. Amidst all that turnover, one perennial business has proven that it can handle a little change in season, and though they have moved walls within the Front Street location (three times, in fact), Climate Clothing has remained a constant fixture. “Watching the whole mall transform to what it is now has been pretty incredible and we’re happy to be a part of it,” manager Ciara Stick said. “It’s a one-stopshop location where people can come in for one thing and check out many things.” This year marks the clothing store’s 10th anniversary, which, as Stick says, is a long time in the retail world. She recently returned to Climate Clothing in September after being diagnosed with breast cancer last summer. Ciara is the manager and co-runs Climate Clothing alongside her mom and business owner, Lorraine Stick. “We have our good days and bad days, and that’s how it goes when you’re running a business with family,” Ciara said with a laugh. “I think our relationship has gotten better; sure we drive each other nuts sometimes!” From humble beginnings in the back of Well Read Books selling cotton clothing, to a conscious, sustainable retail store with predominantly domestic, 100 per cent natural and organic fibres, even Ciara Stick can’t suppress her awe at Climate Clothing’s 10year growth.

“It’s pretty amazing to look at how we started out,” she said. “We were selling 100 per cent cotton clothing until someone brought organic fibres and bamboo to my attention and we started bringing those products in.” After expanding and moving into Horwoods Mall, the natural fibre revolution really took off, and over the last decade, the mother-daughter duo have made it their mission to spread the organic fibre love. “We’re really strict on looking at our labels and seeing what things are made of,” Ciara said. The retail shop carries strictly organic, bamboo and organic cotton. The reason? “Your skin is a living organism and you really have to think about what you’re putting on it. If it’s not breathing, what is that doing to your body?” By wearing natural, breathable fibres, as opposed to synthetic (plastic) fibres, your skin is able to breathe. Lorraine Stick said many people with skin allergies or irritations have reported “changing over” because they can’t wear anything but natural fibres. “A good way to look at it is that polyester is like wrapping your body in Saran Wrap,” Lorraine said. “Your sweat and everything else is trapped in and your body is suffocating.” Along with helping your skin breathe, Climate Clothing is also mindful of its carbon footprint, carrying largely domestic brands rather than importing from overseas. Ciara said this is what really sets them apart from other stores in Whitehorse.

Business partners and mother and daughter Lorraine and Ciara Stick share a laugh p

Manager Ciara Stick makes her triumphant return to Climate Clothing after a year off work fighting breast cancer u “Maybe 85 to 90 per cent of our products are made and designed in Canada, which people love. It helps our economy, helps keep money here and helps our environmental footprint as well.” “People are becoming more conscious and aware, so therefore staying away or making an effort not to purchase stuff from overseas,” Lorraine added. “It’s about educating the public and how you do that without talking down to people. The more things we do to help people make environmentally conscious choices, the better.” While some price tags may appear costly, both business partners believe that switching over to natural fibres is truly priceless, for the planet and for your body, and vouch for the longevity of natural fibre clothing.

“Customers say it’s a love/ hate store in the sense that they love the product but they hate that they spend so much money here,” Lorraine laughed. Climate Clothing provides a range of stylish clothing for all sizes, including a small men’s clothing corner as well. Over their years, they have learned to keep things small, Ci ara said. Instead of providing an item in every size, the shop carries a sizeable rotation of items to avoid inventory piling up and carrying into subsequent seasons. “People love that they can buy a unique item and be the only person in town with that item,” she said. Climate Clothing also recently opened an online store (www.ClimateClothing.ca) so customers can shop online without having to physically come to the location. Looking ahead, Climate Clothing is excited to continue spread-

Climate Clothing is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Yukoners are invited to come to Climate Clothing on Friday, October 13 for the Climate Clothing 10th anniversary party, where they will be offering prizes for every 10th customer, along with Ciara’s own blend of Midnight Sun coffee. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST The Yukonstruct Makerspace Society is looking for available options to bring its makerspace and coworking spaces into one facility in a prominent downtown location. We are seeking information on available spaces (for lease or purchase) that are located downtown, approximately +/- 20,000 f2, in a zone that can potentially accommodate mixed commercial use of office space, retail space and “studio” use. We are seeking information on potential lease or purchase options as well as any interest in sponsoring our organization to find a new space. Please contact ed@yukonstruct.com to discuss.

Creatively named “Dog” enjoys a new hobby – stand up paddleboarding – with me while on vacation at Hornby Island, British Columbia.

Remy is a shelter dog sprung from Mae Bachur by Kathy Piwowar. He has since learned to tell time and manipulate humans through eye contact. Presently, he is pursuing a career in co-piloting.

What’s Up Yukon is pleased to partner with Yukon Transportation Museum’s Dog Culture Display, “Yukon’s Best Friend: Doggedness in Love and Labour”. Your photos will be on display at the dog culture exhibit so be sure to stop in. We are open every day from 10-6 and Tuesday from 10-8. Selected submissions many appear on both partners’ social media and inside What’s Up Yukon’s printed issue and website! That’s right - your pooch will be appreciated by all!

Universe from Your Backyard Winter brings frigid days, but the clearest skies are as the Winter Milky Way glows dimly amongst the brightest stars of the longest nights. Join us and learn how to find the circumpolar constellations, the Orion Nebula, and stay on top of weekly sky events and space news. Guest lectures will join us in person and on-line, as we expand our understanding of the cosmos and all it has to offer those who look up. Telescope and binocular viewing on-site will take place after class, when weather permits, please dress appropriately as it can be very cold when it is clear. Field trip to the Yukon Centre Observatory is included.

Richard’s Tire Tips Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

No more lifting, loading, lugging required Ask us about our Tire Storage Service!

Accelerate Your Business Results

Entrepreneurship course at (co)space will focus on risks and rewards of self-employment, starting Oct. 17 by Michael Bramadat-Willcock

I

ndependent Management consultant Stefan Voswinkel has a question for Yukon entrepreneurs: “What does success mean to you?” Voswinkel is running a five-session workshop aimed at helping business-minded Yukoners figure this out for themselves. He says it’s essential to prioritize your values. Once you’ve reached the point where you know what your goals are, it makes sense to focus on what you do best. “Make sure you utilize your strengths and delegate what you are not good at. Otherwise you’re wasting your time.” Voswinkel intends the course to be highly participatory. Show up with the willingness to do it like you mean it, he says. “Bring forward what decisions and obstacles you’re facing, and be open to feedback and input from your peers and myself.” The course is geared toward people with startups, as well as people who already have a business that they want to grow. Highlights of the curriculum include building a roadmap to successfully commercialize your ideas, managing relationships and financial management. The course is a commitment to four weekly sessions, starting Tuesday, Oct. 17, and a follow-up session one month later. Voswinkel is A 24-year veteran of the Yukon business scene. From 1994 to 2003, he and his wife operated a high-end tour company out of Atlin, part of which was an air charter operation. Voswinkel also specializes in succession management. He’s got a personal philosophy on northern business that he’s acquired through trial and error over the course of his career in the Yukon. “Entrepreneurship for me is the best way of self-determination and living your values. Total accountability - no one to blame, but the successes are all yours, too. “You can’t do it alone though -

Stefan Voswinkel has lived and worked in the North for 24 years and counting. He’s offering a course for Yukon entrepreneurs at (co)space

PHOTO: courtesy of Stefan Voswinkel doing this with a support network of cool people creates a sense of belonging,” he said. With the importance of belonging in mind, he said that the course will help participants grow an essential support network of like-minded people. To achieve a depth of understanding in the business world, overcoming roadblocks and learning from mistakes is key. Voswinkel brings his wealth of trial and error know-how to the weekly sessions. “I have faced and overcome many obstacles in my career – as an employee and business owner. I understand technology and finance, and most importantly, how

they connect to human behaviour. With these insights, I will help participants accelerate their results,” he said. Doing business in the Yukon presents its own sets of rewards and challenges that are uniquely northern and set us apart from the rest of Canada, Voswinkel said. “As a business owner, you will have to hunt government business, at least indirectly. In some ways, doing business in the Yukon seems less competitive than elsewhere. Nobody should be fooled, though. Professionalism and competitiveness remain keys to success everywhere.” “Being a business owner in
