ur Yukon heritage is a mix of different traditions and different eras, including First Nations history, gold rush stories, the construction of the Alaska Highway and the evolution to the current day. The Yukon’s magic has captured the imagination of many storytellers and artists over the years, but one of the finest was Al Oster, the Yukon balladeer and 1999 Order of Canada recipient. Oster passed away this past October in Salmon Arm, B.C. at the age of 92. He lived in the Yukon until 1975. As we celebrate the Klondike Gold Rush during Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous and the many Yukon histories during Heritage Day, it’s a good time to recognize his work to chronicle the Yukon. He first visited Whitehorse in June of 1957, drawn by the tales of Yukon’s colourful stories and people. Like many before him,

the spell of the Yukon captured his imagination and he convinced his wife, Mary, to seek a new adventure as a family in the Yukon that summer. Having written ballads since he was a child, he naturally started writing songs about his new home and by 1961 had a collection of Yukon songs. During this time his band played regularly on the weekends at the Kopper King and the Bamboo Lounge (which later became the Roadhouse Pub) and a group comprised of Vancouver-based Jack Doell, Ed Isaac, Grant Wilson and Oster developed the Yukon Gold Show Tour that went on tour in northern Alberta and across the North. His music even saw some commercial success with the song “My Book of Yukon Memories” reaching number 30 on the Billboard charts. As well, “Waltz of the Yukon” is included in the Boy Scout and Girl Guide camp “sing along” song book. “My Book of Yukon Memories” was written from the heart according to Oster. “It still creates a feeling of ‘longing’ when I sing

Oster’s albums More Legends of the North and Yukon Ballads or hear it. The music and lyrics came so easily,” he said for a CKRW “Yukon Nugget” recording. However, Oster’s most famous song is arguably “Paddlewheeler,” which immortalizes boats that floated up and down the Yukon River and served as the key transportation for the territory prior to the construction of the Alaska Highway. “Paddlewheeler” was special to Oster and gained popularity due to the flow of its lyrics. “It’s an easy song to memorize and sing,” he said for a CKRW “Yukon Nugget.” Oster is one of the Yukon’s musical artists who captured our history of the gold rush and feeling of wonder that we all share in the territory. His music will always be a part of our heritage.

W

ith the advertised Burlesque Workshops and the Pub Crawl, at first glance the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous may seem like an event geared towards adults. But there are a lot of activities for kids too. Just like Yukon’s expanding birth-rate, KidsFest at Rendezvous is also expanding in 2018. Last year KidsFest had one tent with activities for kids; this year that is going to triple. There will be three separate tents – one heated, and all full of programming for your little people. KidsFest will run in Shipyards Park on the weekend of February 23 to 25: Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thanks to the title sponsor of KidsFest – the Boys and Girls Club, and also the contributing sponsor Castle Rock Enterprises – Rendezvous 2018 is sure to delight your little ones. The organizers have planned activities for a wide range of kidfascinations, such as big machines, animals and the Queen’s fancy tea party that took place earlier in February. There are number of games and contests children can participate in such as a potato sack races, and the parent-pull. The Rendezvous KidsFest will showcase some local talent such as clowning by Claire Ness, and singing by Nicole Edwards.

Al Oster ............................. 2

Fire Dancers will also enthrall your little ones just before the Saturday night fireworks display, which will be in-sync with music broadcast on CKRW The Rush. For kids who are interested in medieval times, the Royal Bout will include a sword fight to determine the next official guard for our Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Queen. Kids will also have the opportunity to meet the knights. For the aspiring prince, or princesses, kids are also welcome at the Coronation Ball. Little ones can dress in their finest and socialize with the who’s who of the Yukon at the crowning of the new Queen, and the knighting of Sourdough Sam. Fancy mocktails are also available for the younger, dapper Yukoners at this event. Take a stroll through an outdoor gallery of fine snow sculpture as teams from China, United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Calgary, Winnipeg, and, of course, the Yukon will exhibit their masterpieces. In addition, for a fee, families can receive individual instruction from a professional carver to create your own snow carving work-of-art. The animal lovers in your family will be without a doubt thrilled by this year’s increased partnership with Muktuk Adventures. Kids will be not only be able to go for a ride on a dog sled, they will also be able to meet the canine pals, and learn about canine first aid. Still, there is more! The machine lover of your family will likely be in awe of giant military machines

Families can find lots of fun at Shipyards Park during the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous KIDSFEST showcased by the Canadian Army Cadets. For a special treat head over to Mr. Charlton’s Rendezvous Candy Emporium for festival favourites such as popcorn, little doughnuts, hot chocolate, and cotton candy. Then take them to expend that energy over at the Aurora Colour Wars. This festival-favourite takes place Sunday afternoon. tive Director of Rendezvous, Dave Blottner I am convinced that this year’s Rendezvous is not only a family-friendly event, there are events and activities to bedazzle all kids. For those of you who are not yet parents, we wish you plenty of fun at the adult-oriented events, and perhaps we will see you in 2019 at KidsFest with the wee-product of all that adult fun! he preparation for the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Colour Wars can get pretty messy, but the end result has turned into one of the most anticipated events of the Rendezvous weekend. It is the final event scheduled for Shipyards Park on Sunday and definitely leaves a mark on landscape. The free-forall event leaves no participant uncoloured. The volunteers helping prepare for the event also end up covered in some of the cornstarch and food dye mixture that is used,

A Dog Day Rendezvous T by Emily Hoefs

he Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous and the unique relationship between a Yukoner and their beloved canine companion are two of the most enduring images of life in the North. So, it should come as no surprise that man and woman’s best friend features prominently in the annual winter festival. Yes, our furry friends need to break that cabin fever, too. The One Dog Pull event gives competitors a chance to burn off some pent up energy, and pays homage to the valuable role of sled dogs during the gold rush. They were the primary mode of transportation in winter months, with early stampeders’ survival often depending on a strong, resilient team. The dogs are harnessed and must pull the sled a distance of 16 feet within one minute. Incentives such as treats are forbidden, and the dogs can only be touched for safety reasons during a pull. With two divisions, Junior and Senior handlers, senior dogs are weighed in then classified into light (under 50 lbs), medium (under 100 lbs), and heavy (more than 100 lbs). Dogs are attached to small sleds with increasing amounts of dog food stacked on to pull. In the ultimate contest of “will work for food,” the heaviest pull with the fastest time takes home the kibble that made it across the finish line. Spectators can expect to see about 15 to 20 competitors at this crowd pleasing event. This year the Junior event is brought to us

by Eyewerx, and Wykes Independent Grocer sponsors the Senior event. There is also a pound for pound trophy that is a calculation of the weight of the dog versus the amount they pull. It is awarded across all weight classes. Kim Solonick, a former Rendezvous Queen in her own right as Miss Ecofor Consulting in 2013, said, “There is nothing more exciting than watching a dog dig deep and pull hundreds of pounds inch by inch along the course.” Solonick coordinated the event for a decade, along with Jamie Bowie who was involved for 20 years. “The record pull is by a New-

The One Dog Pull and the Parade & Howling Competition take place on Feb. 24 at Shipyards Park foundland dog named Lucifer who pulled in excess of 1,000 pounds,” Solonick said, adding, “The competition and camaraderie amongst the dogs and their humans speaks to what it is to be a Yukoner.” The One Dog Pull events take place on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Shipyards Park. Registration and dog weigh-in takes place at 9 a.m. The Junior competition is at 11:30 a.m. and the Senior competition is at 12:30 p.m. If your canine is more the type to sing for their supper, there is also the Feed Store/Pet Junction and Humane Society Yukon Pet Parade, which takes place at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the main tent in Shipyards Park, followed immediately by the Bluewave Energy Dog Howling competition. Lifetime Achievement Howler Award recipient, Ruger, has placed in the event three times in three years, taking home first place in 2014 and 2016. Stage mom Shawn O’Donovan-Shipman said, “Ruger is usually quite a shy dog, and when we entered him we didn’t think he would even get on the stage. But the moment he was up there he shone like the sun and howled his little heart out.” Last year marked an early retirement for Ruger. He participated in the competition just for fun, yielding a winning chance to other young “pup-and-comers.” He’s been coaching his cousin Mowgli, who you can catch competing this year. Handlers are encouraged to howl, sing and make general fools of themselves to get their dogs to

join in for a chance at the title. Hopefuls must register online at www.YukonRendezvous.com/ pet-parade-dog-howling by Tuesday, February 20. Entry is by donation.

Snow sculptures are snow cool...

Witness the Volunteers brave the cold on Feb 11 to help out snow stomping to create the snow blocks that the carvers will use to sculpt works of art

community’s hard work and the snow carvers’ artistic skills in the International Snow Carving Exhibition presented by Shaw Direct by Kylie Campbell

Y

IS COMING TO WHITEHORSE!

ukon Sourdough Rendezvous has partnered with Air North, the City of Whitehorse, Days Inn, Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre and Shaw Direct to keep a favourite Rendezvous event. Fourteen years ago Whitehorse artist Don Watts, an internationally-renowned snow carver, started the International Snow Sculpting Challenge and it has been a popular Rendezvous event ever since. He retired from the event last year and this year Rendezvous organisers made partnerships to ensure the event takes place. However, this year it’s a little

different. “We decided to step away from the competition aspect, as we wanted to display art,” said Dave Blottner, executive director of Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. “It’s an exhibition; bringing art to the North and showcasing the international and local talent.” Rendezvous will, for the first time, seek out and bring in carvers from all over Canada and the world to work on their art and display for the exhibition. This year there are some countries that have linked up to create one team. The United States and China have paired together, and Germany and the United Kingdom have paired together. We will also have a team from Spain, Winnipeg, Calgary and a local team from Whitehorse. “This event allows the Yukon to reach out and touch the rest of the world,” Blottner said. “It’s a great knowledge exchange and international exposure.” Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC), as a first time partnership with Rendezvous, will also have First Nations carvers taking part in the exhibition. KDCC is hosting several sculptures at their location and helping out the entire program this year. Ken Anderson, master artist, sculptor and carver from the Tlingit Council, will be leading a team comprised of members of several Yukon First Nations at the KDCC creating three carvings. “It’s pretty exciting having a partnership between the two organisations, as many Rendezvous events are held at the KDCC,” said Courtney Wheelton, events and marketing manager for the KDCC. “First Nations designs are unique and reflective of the artist and territory we are in. It’s a great way to showcase talent in the Yukon and our First Nations artists.” The teams range from a minimum of two to a maximum of five members. Although the theme for Rendezvous this year is “Heat Wave,” there is no set requirement for the snow carvers to adhere to it, as many have been

working on designs over the past few months, Blottner said. Rendezvous’ theme of Heat Wave was certainly evident throughout this winter in Whitehorse, with massive temperature shifts from -40 to +8 throughout winter. “We’ve been working with Mount Sima because of the low snow season in creating snow and the City of Whitehorse has a fun event that the whole community gets involved in and that’s packing the snow to making the snow blocks for the carvers,” Blottner said. The City of Whitehorse organises the evening of “Snow Stomping” with community volunteers who spend one evening stomping snow into large boxes. “Normally this event uses snow from secret snow locations around the City,” said Lindsay Agar, Corporate Events Coordinator with the City of Whitehorse. “However, like two years ago, if the snow melts in December, the event needs help creating the snow.” Mount Sima came to the rescue and helped with creating this year’s snow and without this help the event wouldn’t be possible. The involvement of various organisations such as the City of Whitehorse, Mount Sima and the volunteers who work to prepare this festival is vital to ensure it runs. “It’s absolutely a community event and we couldn’t do it without the people of Whitehorse,” says Blottner. The public can sign up to try snow carving on smaller snow blocks in workshops. Did You Know? Mount Sima created 350 cubic metres of snow in 50 hours at Shipyards Park for Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous 2018. The water pressure from a city hydrant is not enough for good snowmaking, so two high pressure wildland fire Mark 3 pumps are used to create the needed pressure and flow. Up to 50 gal/ min of water goes through one pump at cold temperatures and 480 volts at 30 amps is needed for each pump to operate. Once the snow is created it is left to air out the moisture so the snow packs down without becoming ice. It is then put into large crates and stomped down several times. The snow stomping event held by the City of Whitehorse in 2017 took 8 hours and more than 40 volunteers to stomp nine boxes of snow blocks. Each snow block for the professional snow carvers is 8x10x12 feet.

carving day and night from February 21 to 24. The public can also participate in snow carving on smaller blocks February 23rd and February 24th. “It’s amazing what they can do in the time they have. Come watch and ask questions to the carvers, they are very friendly.”

The sculptures will stay on exhibit until they melt.

The Yukon’s

Part 3 of 6

Magnificent 11

Campbell Highway (#4) and Nahanni Range Highway (#10)

by Doug Sack

T

he Robert Campbell Highway (Highway 4), which runs diagonally across southern Yukon from Watson Lake on the Alaska Highway (Highway 1) to Carmacks on the North Klondike (Highway 2), is certifiable proof that all you needed in 19th century Canada to attain geographical immortality was a Scottish surname and an HBC (Hudson Bay Company) job title. The only other Magnificent 11 roads honouring surnames are The Dempster (Highway 5), named for a highly regarded Mountie who patrolled the Arctic by dogteam for years, and the Haines Road (Highway 3), the only one named for a female: missionary Francina E. Haines. However, all Campbell did was name Frances Lake for his boss’s wife, get himself promoted, then happen to be the first white man to cross into the Yukon River watershed from the east and come down the Pelly River to where it meets with the Yukon River, and set up a HBC post. He chose a spot where the Selkirk First Nation had been living, fishing and trading for as long as their history is told. An archaeology study on the area (called A

PHOTOS: Government of Yukon

Highway 4 is rough in patches, but is in large open areas of the Yukon Look Back in Time: The Archeology of Fort Selkirk, published by the Government of Yukon) states that the Selkirk people had been

there since before the end of the last ice age. Then, in 1848 Campbell came along and set up Fort Selkirk. He promptly lost it to some Chilkat fur traders from the coast who ransacked it because they resented the HBC’s unwanted invasion into their interior trading area. His own company admitted he never made a nickel of profit while he was here. If ever there was a Yukon road begging for a name change in the 21st century, this is it, but that’s a dragon to be slayed on another day. The road itself is yet another example of Yukon connect-thedots. The territorial and federal governments had a post-war construction program in the ’60s called “Roads to Resources” and the section of the Robert Campbell Highway from Watson Lake to Miner’s Junction (now the Nahanni Range/ Highway 10 rest area and turnoff) was one of the first projects to get

As part of the “Roads to Resources” program, the Robert Campbell Highway has seen plenty of ore truck traffic over the years

started under this program. They needed to get to the Cantung Mine up in the high Logan Mountains of the Yukon Territory/Northwest Territories border region. On the other end of what later became the Robert Campbell Highway, Al Kulan’s discovery of lead, zinc, silver and more in the Faro region close to the Tintina Trench was being readied for production and the road in from Carmacks was being improved annually until finally finished in 1969. This meant there were now two good mining roads at either end of the Robert Campbell Highway, which only had to be connected to complete the loop between Ross River and Miner’s Junction. In 1978 you could finally drive from Watson Lake to Carmacks, taking Highway 4 (Robert Campbell Highway) – which is technically a shortcut to Dawson City and the Klondike (but only by 8 kilometres or so) compared to driving the Alaska Highway from Watson Lake to Whitehorse and turning onto the North Klondike Highway to get to Carmacks and Dawson City. As a product of the “Roads to Resources” program, tourism was never a part of the construction motivation of this highway, although there are several good

campgrounds along the way, so it must have been a secondary consideration. In a word, the completed Highway 4 was schizophrenic when it opened in 1979. First it’s good, then rough, then good again for a while, and then rough again. It was good from Watson Lake to Miner’s Junction in the southeast, and good from Carmacks to Faro in the northwest, but there was a lot of Yukon in between with no services or amenities. That section was well suited for self-sufficient RVs, but no other travelers or visitors. In fact, your reviewer did the whole trip with a travel trailer during the autumn colours of 2017 and it is still that way after all these years of annual upgrade opportunities. There is only so much money in the YG road budgets and roads get bucks according to population numbers and/or economic considerations. That’s just a northern fact of life. As for Nahanni Range Road (Highway 10), with no tungsten activity going on these days, it could use some grading, surfacing and ditch work, but is such a wellconstructed road built to handle big ore carriers, it’s a pleasant drive into spectacular scenery. But, again, it is only suitable for self-sufficient RVs and 4X4’s. It’s not really set up for casual tourists and is definitely an adventure drive unless you’re a geologist. They’re a different breed and drive roads these roads all the time for work. Of course, if you break down or have any problems up there, you may find other adjectives to describe it, as there is no cell service. Come to mention it, the only place I could make a phone call between Johnson’s Crossing and the North Canol was right in the town limits of Ross River. If you are a northern cheechako (rookie), sitting at the Watson Lake sign forest on the Alaska Highway, looking at a Yukon road map and wondering if you should turn right onto Robert Campbell #4 on your way to the Klondike because, afterall, it is shorter, the answer is NO! Two reasons: 1. The Alaska Highway from Watson to Whitehorse is a paved piece of cake going directly into the headwater lake country with cont’d on page 15 ...

The Yukon’s Magnificent 11 ... cont’d

The Robert Campbell Highway crosses the Lapie River Canyon with high cliff walls and a great view beautiful scenery around every bend, and 2. Whitehorse is the only place between Watson Lake and Dawson City where you are guaranteed to find any kind of supplies or luxuries you need to make your trip

enjoyable. Whitehorse will have anything you need, including the cheapest fuel in the North. You cannot bypass Whitehorse to go bouncing down a bumpy Highway 4 just to save time, because you won’t save any at all.

It will cost you time and money if you are the type who cannot resist a shortcut. It just looks inviting on a map. Besides, Whitehorse is much more than just a service and supply centre. It’s a great tourist attraction, too, with a riverboat, museums, game farms, lakes, hot springs, a variety of restaurants and many other activities and locales of interest like Miles Canyon, Grey Mountain and Mount Sima. When you consider that the Cantung Mine was the biggest producer of tungsten in the western world (outside of China) and ran from 1962 to 1985, and that Faro’s lead/zinc mine ran from 1969 to 1998 for three different companies, the amount of revenue generated by Highway 4 is virtually incalculable. At one time Faro was the largest open pit mine in the world and produced 40 per cent of the Yukon’s GDP for years and years. It also produced one of the biggest environmental nightmares in Canadian history, but restoration and reclamation is expected to begin in 2023 and cost more than $1 billion, which will help the 400 hearty souls who still live in the only Yukon ghost town with a golf course. Mactung, on the Canol Road (Highway 6) in the Hess Mountains just north of the Logans, has between 11 and 27 years of proven scheelite deposits considered the biggest minable deposit in the world and is in pre-production, pending road construction and better world prices. So the Highway 4 mining party isn’t over yet. In Sept, 2017, the Liberal governments of Canada and the Yukon announced $350 million in road construction funding, much of it slated to have #4 ready when

ore prices rise again, which is inevitable. Calling Robert Campbell’s highway a “Road to Resources” may have been an historical understatement, whether the guy deserved a road named in his honour or not. (In my opinion, not!) I think it should have been called The Kulan Corridor or Berglund Connector to honour one of the Yukon’s two most successful prospectors, Axel Berglund who

staked and founded Cantung in 1954 or Al Kulan who discovered Faro.

Heating up the music scene with Frostbite 2018 The Frostbite Music Festival makes a comeback March 2, 3 and 4 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre by Danny Macdonald

T

he Frostbite Music Festival returns in 2018 after going on hiatus in 2014, 2015 and 2017. The 2016 Frostbite Music Festival was a scaled down event, with only local musicians participating. This year, on a new date, the festival has embraced the theme of rising from the ashes and a phoenix-like creature is featured on their promotional material. That vision is inspired by the event itself having been reborn as a full-scale event that will feature a mix of both local musicians and those from Outside. Frostbite has a history of reinventing itself, according to Frostbite Music Festival Society President Amos Scott. “It’s interesting how often changing location helps change identity,” Scott said. “We’re excited to be back with a full-scale Frostbite at a new location, the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.” Frostbite has used different venues throughout Whitehorse since it got its start back in 1979. According to Scott, the first festivals were held at the old Whitehorse Rec Centre, before it burnt to the ground. It was located at

If

the current Yukon Transportation Museum location. Frostbite volunteers helped rebuild as the Ice Palace, where a few more festivals were held before the planned transfer to the museum was completed. “The festival bounced around down the hill after that,” Scott said. “There was a year at the Riverdale Plaza, the current Heart of Riverdale space. And there was a year in a helicopter hangar, which was unique.” The event eventually settled at the Yukon College gym, where it has been held for well over a decade, before the move this year to the KDCC. The change in venue will help reduce the work for volunteers to put on the show. “The College was great and very accommodating, but it was a lot of work to convert the space into a concert setting,” Scott explained. “There are staff on hand to help at the new venue and our tech staff don’t have some of the same difficulties to overcome. For example, they used to have to run a power cable from another building to help power the equipment.” The resulting changes have re-

This year’s festival will have about 60 volunteers helping to put on the show, when in the past they’ve needed as many as 100 to put on the event. The musical acts are of course the key feature of the festival and there are five named Outside acts currently scheduled to attend throughout the festival, which takes place March 2, 3 and 4. These include Iskwé, a rock/ alternative act with Indigenous influences; Bend Sinister, a progressive-indie rock band from Vancouver; Adrian A. on two theremins. Theremins are light organs that activate as the players move their hands over the lights. According to Scott, it is a great act for kids who are fascinated by the instrument. There was one concern of moving downtown according to Scott, and that was not being able to use the Yukon Arts Centre. However, the Arts Centre was very supportive and has partnered with Frostbite on their Friday night performance: the musical duo Kane and Potvin. Ticket holders to the Kane and Potvin show will have Friday access to the Frostbite acts at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, and Friday ticket holders to Frostbite will have the same privilege at the Arts Centre show. (Ed. note: A preview of the Kane and Potvin show can be found on page 19 of this issue of What’s Up Yukon.) The organizers are also looking

forward to the new date. “Frostbite has traditionally been on the third weekend of February, but we’re now two weekends later,” Scott said. “It gives us more light and is warmer. It lets us do more. For example, we will have the firepit going at the cultural centre and people can go outside.” Tickets are available at Arts Underground. A full list of performers and contact information Frostbite can be found on their website, www.FrostbiteMusicSociety.com.

This beautifully crafted siren call about human impacts on oceans was a hit with audiences at ALFF 2018. The industrialization that has occurred in the oceans over the last century mirrors the events that triggered mass extinctions on land. Industrial scale fishing, habitat destruction, species loss and pollution have placed the ocean in peril. The very nature of the sea is being irretrievably altered. Dir. by Karina Holden, 2017, Australia, 70 min.

Margot Robbie stars as controversial Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding in this alternately tragic, hilarious and absurd look at one of the biggest scandals in US sports history. Approaching the real-life characters without judgment, Steven Rogers’ sharp script and Craig Gillespie’s bold direction combine to deliver a shamelessly entertaining film that is part mockumentary and part tragicomedy. Dir. Craig Gillespie, 2017, USA, 121 min. Richard’s Tire Tips

When is the best time

TO CHECK YOUR TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE?

Inflation pressures should always be checked cold. The temperature of your tires has a direct impact on the pressure, the higher the temperature the higher the pressure and vice versa the lower the temperature the lower the pressure. Therefore they should always be checked and adjusted when cold, either first thing in the morning or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours.

Grapes of Wrath frontman Kevin Kane and his Northern Pikes counterpart Bryan Potvin come north again March 2 as Kane & Potvin

f he hadn’t been so exhausted from a 23-hour train ride, Kevin Kane might have joined forces with fellow singer/guitarist Bryan Potvin 30 years sooner than he did. Back in 1984 (or possibly ’85), The Grapes of Wrath, a pop-rock group Kane fronted in Kelowna, B.C., was starting to gain traction in Western Canada. Apart from Kane, the Grapes consisted of bassist/vocalist Tom Hooper and his brother Chris, the trio’s drummer. When the time came for their debut performance outside British Columbia, their manager cut costs by sending them to Calgary, Alberta by train. “We couldn’t sleep, because the one time I tried to fall asleep, somebody tried to steal my sunglasses off my face,” Kane said. “We arrived in Calgary feeling like garbage, and our brighteyed and bushy-tailed promoter immediately took us to [the concert venue] MacEwan Hall, and he goes, ‘There’s this band playing, The Northern Pikes. They’re great guys; I think you’d really like them.’”

As Kane tells it, they walked into the empty hall to find the Saskatoon-based Pikes “just giving it” on stage. “They had so much energy and so much drive, and we were just zombies. So we went, ‘Yeah, we don’t know if our energies really match right now; maybe we should sleep first.’ We never did meet them that day.” Flash forward: 1992. The Grapes of Wrath and the Northern Pikes were both at the top of their form, two of Canada’s most popular rock ensembles. Kane had still not met Potvin, his Pikes counterpart. The two groups didn’t consider themselves rivals, but Kane admits feeling a bit of jealousy toward Potvin. “They had two guitars, and the Grapes just had one guitar and keyboards. There were times when I thought, ‘Damn, it would be fun to play with another guitar player.’” Kane wasn’t necessarily an ardent Northern Pikes fan, but was definitely aware of the group’s radio play and Much Music appearances.

“I think the two bands kind of felt a funny kinship, because we were both from smaller towns in Western Canada,” Kane said early this month in a phone interview from Calgary. “We’re both harmony bands; we’re both melody bands. We both like some guitar, and we both like to kick it up from time to time. But really, we let the melody be king.” That year also marked the inauguration of the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC). One opening-week highlight was a concert by The Grapes of Wrath. After 25 years, Kane’s recollection of the event is a bit minimal. “I seem to remember we invited the audience on stage, and they did come on stage with us. I also vaguely remember the band who opened for us had a kind of Captain Beefheart thing going on, which I thought was pretty great.” Unfortunately, 1992 also saw the breakup of The Grapes of Wrath, followed by a lengthy period of litigation over ownership of the group’s name and back catalogue. Flash forward again: 2012 (or possibly ’13). After an 18-year separation, Kane and the Hooper brothers were back as The Grapes of Wrath – “the same three guys who were playing together when they were 11 and 13 years old in a basement in Kelowna.” Not only that: they’d been booked for a casino show in Regina with The Northern Pikes. Kane and Potvin could finally have the conversation they missed out on nearly three decades earlier. “A year after that, we realized we were neighbours in Toronto. We started hanging out and playing guitar together, and it was just like an immediate mesh,” Kane said. “There’s a certain ease when I play with him. We trust each

other not to play something corny or clichéd, or whatever. We both delight each other with things we come up with,” he added. “He’s also one of my favourite soloists. I really enjoy his guitar solos and his use of noise, and atonality, and all of that stuff. He’s really just a great guitar player, and it’s a lot of fun to play with him.” Since teaming up as Kane & Potvin in 2014, the duo has recorded a self-titled album and is planning a second CD. Flash forward yet again: 2018. Both musicians continue to play with their previous ensembles, and Kane has also recently done stints with the Pikes. Hence this month’s phone interview from Calgary: he was there to record some tracks for the group’s next album. Even as a duo, their concert repertoire includes new takes on some of the biggest hits of both The Grapes of Wrath and The Northern Pikes. “We go into it and trust each

other to come up with something fresh. The arrangements actually changed very naturally, not because we tried to change them, but because the other person didn’t know the song,” Kane said. “Bryan comes up with harmonies that are different from what Tom did on Grapes songs, and I’ll do guitar figures and whatnot that aren’t on the Pikes version. It sort of freshens it up, and definitely makes it fun for us.” After a 25-year-absence, Kane will return to the Yukon Arts Centre on Friday, March 2 at 8 p.m., along with his new musical partner, as part of the YAC’s 25th anniversary presentations. Who knows? They might even invite the audience to join them onstage.

Mixing it up at the Mad(am) Trapper Contest Partner Packing and the High Kick are some of the new contests designed to test your strength and skills at the popular Rendezvous competition, Feb. 23 through 25 at Shipyards Park by Jennifer Trapnell

T

he multi-event Mad(am) Trapper competition, slated for Feb. 23 through 25, usually attracts dozens of women and men vying for the title of Mad Trapper or Madam Trapper. Historically, contestants have

PHOTOS: courtesy of Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous competed in five sourdough “skills”: the Log Toss, Chainsaw Chuck, Swede Saw, Axe Throw, and the ever-impressive Flour Packing event. This year, organizers have changed things up at the Shipyards Park venue. “Those five events have been the same ones for many years, and were based largely on strength,”

The Partner Pack forces competitors to carry their partner through an obstacle course said Rendezvous Operations Manager “Six-Shooter Sas” Saskrita Shrestha. To encourage a broader selection of contestants, organizers decided – partly through a hat draw – on a new line-up including some of the “big five” and some other outdoor events. “We’re rotating some events out and putting others in that haven’t been a part of the contest before,” said Board Member “Luscious” Lana Laviolette. “I think that flour-packing may have scared some people off (from signing up),” Shrestha added. One of the new events is the crowd-pleasing Alaskan High Kick. This is a traditional northern sport, and will take place in Shipyards Park on Friday, February 23 at noon, organized by the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle. Athletes in this event must execute a torso-twisting high kick into the air from a seated position, and touch a small sealskin target suspended above. Winning kicks at the Arctic Winter Games

Yukoners push the edge with the Chainsaw Chuck

events have reached more than eight feet. The challenging two-person Whip Saw and the Partner Pack are two new events have been moved into to the Mad(am) Trapper line-up. The Partner Pack (introduced more than a decade ago as a “wife-carrying” contest) gets competitors racing around an obstacle course while packing someone “at least 100 pounds.” It’s scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. You can still sign up for some glory in the Flour Packing, Log Tossing, and Chainsaw Chucking events – they’re just not a part of the official Mad(am) Trapper activities. The grand finale Swede Saw and slightly scary Axe-Throw are two of the original events in year’s Mad(am) Trapper line-up. They’ll be run back to back on the final Rendezvous Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. All of the events in the contest are open to both men and women, with cash prizes for each winner of individual events. There’s “small, medium and large” gold nuggets for the first, second and third place winners in both the men’s and women’s Mad

Lumel Studios has crafted glass axe trophies for the winners of Mad and Madam Trapper competitions (am) Trapper categories. And the contest’s sponsor, Lumel Studios, has made some glass axes as trophies for the firstplace Mad and Madam Trappers. Lumel Studios will present them to the winners at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25 in the main tent just before the Rendezvous Wrap-up Parade. Contest registration is open to men and women over 18, right up to the day of competition. The entry fee is $60. Find out more at YukonRendezvous.com.
