Kiddos! We’re leaving on a jet plane

How to survive travelling with toddlers by Megan Skarnulis

I

t is always really good until it is really bad – like the kind of bad that has you running through the third largest airport pushing a stroller whilst juggling a diaper bag, three backpacks, the precious blankie, all to a sound track of whining, or a perpetual chorus of “Why...?” questions. In short, travelling with young children is not easy; it throws all sorts of challenges at you, and your days of travelling with just carryon are gone. Yet, after 50+ flights with my tiny, travelling companions I’ve realized there are some things you can do to make the journey more enjoyable, and less epic.

ouring book and small games. Inside there was also a pair of quick dry pants. In the event of an accident you will need these. Speaking of extra pants I was thankful that I brought extra pants for myself when my toddler accidentally dumped an entire cup of

Sometimes it seems that the cost of bringing luggage rivals the cost of the airline ticket – unless of course you are flying on Yukon’s own Air North. On Air Canada, for example, it would cost you over $100 for a family of four to each bring a bag. Do your best to pack light and consider combining suitcases. If you fear this will cause mass confusion, pack lightweight, collapsible duffels in your luggage so that you can move into separate bags upon reaching your destination. Remember there are laundry facilities almost everywhere. You do not want your bag to be pregnant with stuffed toys. Introducing the stuffie passport warded off this situation for us. We told our son in advance that we were going on a trip, and he was entitled to one stuffie passport, unfortunately, without a passport all the other stuffed animals would have to stay home. We talked about what a passport was, and told our youngster that it was his responsibility to carry Little Bear’s, homemade passport. This also warded off his interest in carrying his own passport. Little Bear got to ride in our youngster’s backpack along with other light-weight items such as child-specific headphones, a col-

Little Bear was lucky to secure the one authorized stuffie passport to travel with the family juice on me one hour into a nine hour flight. Consider packing an empty water bottle; I have never had a flight attendant refuse to fill a spill-proof cup rather than passing a flimsy plastic cup to a toddler. This brings me to snacks. Always bring more than you think you need – mostly healthy ones, but a few treats, too. To be honest, pack some extras for yourself and your spouse – nobody likes a hangry parent. By the time you finish packing you will likely really feel the need for a vacation!

Enroute

Always leave early for the airport. The last thing you need is a long check-in line up and a hassle when you are trying to gate-check your car seat or stroller. In large urban centres find your gate early, and then head to the play-space – Vancouver has a few gems. Expending energy before you have to strap your youngsters in is always a good idea. On a long flight, we always try to bring something brand new for the little ones so it perks their interest. It’s not just the same old. Instead, new games, a new book, or a new interactive toy. Some parents just plug their kids in, but on our last flight this only lasted 30 minutes of a nine hour flight. Take shifts: one parent enjoys a movie, while the other is in full-on entertain-the-kiddos mode. On overnight flights, bring pajamas, books, toothbrushes and that special stuffed toy. Take them through a regular bedtime routine, and tell them this is a sleeping flight. Finally, save boarding passes; they make great toys when your little one is pretending to fly a plane (the couch) to a far off destination later!

Destination

While you are at your destination utilize the maintenance pee. It does not matter if your kiddo claims that they don’t have to pee, if there is a convenient bathroom, utilize it. Carry snacks everywhere. Remember to be flexible — you are literally overturning their routines. And do your best to be patient with jet lag. Lastly, have fun, take pictures, eat ice cream – and be sure to squeeze in some me time, or even a date night! pring. Daylight. Forward. Change. These words all individually invoke positivity and renewal. They remind us of the potential of bettering ourselves and opportunities to seize life to the fullest. I think that’s why some marketing masochist decided to brand one of the most loathsome times of the year – daylight savings – as “spring forward”. And if you want someone to blame, blame the Germans. Although Benjamin Franklin is first credited with the idea due to a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris, daylight time was first popularized by the Germans in 1915. It was then quickly adopted by Britain, much of Europe and Canada. In Franklin’s letter, entitled “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light,” he suggests Parisians could economize candle usage by getting people out of bed earlier in the morning. Recent research on the letter also concludes that Franklin was likely making the suggestion as a joke. Originally conceived as a tool for energy conservation, the first large study of the effectiveness of daylight savings was undertaken by the U.S. Department of Transportation during the oil crisis in the 1970s. It was found to trim national energy consumption by 1

Daylight savings time is one of the oddest creations of humanity per cent. And an October 2008 report to Congress by the U.S. Department of Energy that examined 67 utilities across the United States concluded that the four-week extension of daylight time saved about 0.5 percent of the nation’s electricity per day, or 1.3 trillion watt-hours in total. But according to a Scientific American article in March 2009, many studies now question that energy conservation argument. In fact, the article references a 2006 study undertaken in Indiana when the state implemented daylight savings time for the first time. The Indiana study found that in an era of increased technology and electronics use at home, daylight time increased statewide residential energy consumption by 1 per cent and cost the state an extra $9 million. Other studies have shown that daylight time may have an impact on our health. Swedish research-

ers in Stockholm looked heart attack rates in Sweden since 1987. The first week following daylight time saw a 5 per cent increase of heart attacks. A 2008 article in the New England Journal of Medicine theorizes that the disruption of biological rhythms and sleep patterns may contribute to this increase. But we are better drivers during daylight and a 2007 B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis & Policy study that assessed 28 years of automobile accident data, found that there was a 6 to 8 per cent decrease in crashes for vehicular occupants in April after daylight savings moved to the first weekend of the month from the last. But within all these studies and debates among academics is the simple fact: there are not many conversations you will have with people where they are in favour of daylight savings time. The only easy thing about it is that it is simpler to move the clock

in your car forward in the spring and in the fall you’re driving around an hour ahead of schedule for two months. In fact, most people would prefer to pick one time zone and stay in it, but we continue to flip-flop time zones, for seemingly no other reason than we’ve always done it. The persistence of daylight savings time almost reinforces the belief in some shadow organization making decisions. I’m inclined to blame the Stonecutters of Simpsons fame and add a new line to their infamous song, “Who keeps daylight savings time?/We do, we do!”

hen we look back on Canada’s sesquicentennial year (and yes, I did look it up to make sure I spelled it correctly), what will we think of it? There were some who felt that the events, which began somewhat sluggishly under one government (spending a lot of money on the War of 1812-14) and finished under another government, might have been a bit more exciting. There were others who felt that celebrating 150 years of this particular political entity, and not recognizing the thousands of years of habitation that preceded it, was more than it deserved. Someday, someone will write a book like the one Pierre Berton wrote to analyze the 1967 Centennial Year, and they may perhaps come to the same conclusions that he did, in a book that first appeared in 1997, 30 years after the event. Berton was ambivalent. His original hardcover title was 1967: The Last Good Year, (Doubleday) but by the time the paperback edition came out, a year later, he had changed it to 1967: Canada’s Turning Point (Bantam-Seal). The book is divided into seven sections, each with three to five sub-chapters. The first segment is called The Best of Times and the last is called The Worst of Times, and many things happened in between. Official reception to the idea of a 100th birthday party was lukewarm, according to Berton. Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson origin-

happened in between.

Whitehorse-born author Pierre Berton received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 1998 for his literary works ally didn’t want anything to do with it and kept the budget as low as possible until it began to gather steam on its own. It grew in spite of that. There were firsts and there were lasts. It was, for instance the last half year for the NHL’s Original Six, and thus the last that the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens would face each other in the playoffs. Among the various things that came about, or began, in that year were: Expo ’67; a royal commission on the Status of Women; the beginnings of Gay Liberation; Charles De Gaulle’s “Vive Le Quebec Libre!”; the Voyageur Canoe Pageant from the North Saskatchewan River to Montreal; the beginnings of the changing of the guard from Pearson to Pierre Elliott Trudeau; changes in the laws on divorce and abortion; the founding of the Parti Quebecois; “Cana-da” by Bobby Gimby (The Pied Piper of Canada); a UFO Landing Pad in St. Paul, Alberta; and an attempt to mush a dog team from Tuktoyaktuk to Edmonton. Those are just a few of the topics covered in this book. I wonder what the book about Canada 150 will cover in 2047. Berton was involved in some of these events personally, so there are parts of this book that read

like a memoir while other parts read more like a history. He was very good at doing this sort of thing and this book is well worth reading. Dan Davidson has been writing about books for Yukon publications since 1977. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Burger soup is a warming comfort food that pleases event the pickiest of eaters

I

n a recent article on uses for ground meat, I intentionally left out soup so I could do this article on that topic. Burger soup is surprisingly easy to make and I am satisfied it will please even the most discriminating taste buds. The complete project, including cooking time is about 2 hours, but of course, longer simmering won’t do any harm. This soup is best made with traditionally lean wild meat ground without additional pork or beef fat. Domestic pork and beef fat contains all those chemicals and hormones that we are trying to avoid by eating wild meat. If, however, you are using store bought ground beef or wild meat ground with fat added, there is the additional step of allowing the stock to cool and then skimming off the fat, which will harden on the surface. This can easily be done with a spatula or wide spoon. Start off with 1 pound of ground meat and obviously, if you double the meat, then double everything else that makes the soup. First brown the meat. Olive

oil is my choice for this and everything else in life. When browned, add 5 cups of water continuing to heat the pot. If you have used fat added wild meat or fat containing ground beef, you should let it cool until the fat forms a skim on the surface and remove that fat. (Traditionally lean, no-fat-added wild meat allows this step to be omitted.) The following ingredients can be added all at once: • 1 cup chopped carrots • 1 cup chopped celery • 1 cup chopped onion • One 8oz can of tomato sauce • One 16 oz can of crushed tomatoes • 6 cubes or equivalent low salt bouillon • 1 tsp salt • One 10 oz pkg of frozen corn • 1 tsp dried basil • 3 Tbsp of ketchup Other veggies of your choice can be added, such as zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, etc. After bringing to a boil, cover and reduce heat, simmering for at least 1 ½ hours at a heat low enough to prevent burning and

sticking to the pot. A cast iron frypan with a lid that works is perfect to minimize the chance of burning. Serve with toasted garlic bread and a simple salad and it makes a complete meal. When cooled, any remaining soup can be frozen in high-tech Tupperware type of containers or in my favourite: the tapered yoghurt or honey tubs. Frozen in either type of container, this soup will stay in excellent shape, flavour-wise for more than a year in the freezer. On a short-notice meal, any of these containers can be thawed in a sink of hot water. Larry Leigh is an avid angler, hunter and all-round outdoors person who prefers to cook what he harvests himself. Powering community media North of 60 Conference exploring open-source technology and broadcasting takes place at the Whitehorse Days Inn on March 23 by Michael Bramadat-Willcock

A

group of broadcasters and open-source technology enthusiasts are having gettogether at the Days Inn in Whitehorse on March 23. The open-source North 60 conference brings together professionals from different walks of life – including local businesses, First Nations government, community radio stations, independent coders and freelance journalists – to explore how open-source works with broadcasting. The conference is being organized by CJUC “The Juice” 92.5 FM in Whitehorse and Open Broadcaster, a company based in Tagish that offers hardware, software and streaming solutions for broadcasters. Tagish resident Rob “Radio Rob” Hopkins is a driving force behind the use of this technology in northern Canada. He is an open-source technology guru and founder of Open Broadcaster. He describes the technology as, “a radio station in a box… It does

what the million-dollar systems do, but with open-source.” Hopkins says that open-source is especially useful for end users in remote areas who are interested in radio broadcasting because it allows people to run radio a station from the comfort of their home computers, “without having to go to the studio at -40ºC.” The technology is different from traditional radio in that it requires less maintenance and is accessible through the web. “The audience gets to participate and choose programming they actually want to hear from comfort of their homes,” said Hopkins. The conference is open to anyone with an interest in opensource technology and broadcasting. It includes five speakers and demonstrations. Hopkins and special guest Elliot Christian will be there to talk about local and international emergency alerting with opensource technology.

Tagish-based open-source technology guru and founder of Open Broadcaster, “Radio” Rob Hopkins is a driving force behind the use of this technology in northern Canada Bill Polonsky at CJUC Community Radio in Whitehorse will talk about his work with open-source. Bob Miller, of Computerisms, will talk about the different practical applications of the technology; including the Carcross-Tagish First Nation’s use of open-source in the context of First Nations Governance. There will be a panel discussion to discuss using such an opensource platform. Among the panelists will be What’s Up Yukon Publisher Tammy Beese. Beese brings the perspective of an end user – a business owner who is running the operations with an open-source

Open-source technology in the North Open-source technology has an impressive track record in the Canadian North. Notable open-source projects include CJUC 92.5 FM in Whitehorse, which was one of Rob Hopkin’s first Open Broadcaster partnerships. Open Broadcaster is also involved with New North Networks in Inuvik. They’re all about participatory media. According to the Open Broadcaster website, thanks to their technology, “Inuvik residents are able to share and upload smartphone videos and pictures to a server, which then assembles this content into local programming...” Various indigenous language projects utilize open-source technology as a way of helping keep their languages living. The Nuxalk Nation of Q’umk’uts’ (Bella Coola, British Columbia) partnered with Open Broadcaster to set up a non-profit community radio station. The station, called CKNN Nuxalk Radio - 91.1 FM, is managed by the Nuxalk Radio Committee with the goal of revitalizing the Nuxalk language. There are emergency response uses for the technology, as well. In August 2013 as part of Operation NANOOK, the Yukon Government and the City of Whitehorse collaborated with the Canadian Armed Forces in an emergency response drill. During the operation the Yukon Emergency Measures Organization tested the Pelmorex Public Alerting System with CFET Radio 106.7 FM in Tagish, which is powered by Open Broadcaster. Hopkins said that the challenges and rewards of working in the North are unique. “There’s a lot of interest in radio here, but people couldn’t afford to do it. With open-source technology remote communities are able to have their own programming, that reflects their reality instead of having to listen to radio that’s based in Vancouver, for example,” Hopkins said. More than 100 customers currently use Hopkins’ system. network. She uses the open-source network to have smooth daily transactions between the staff in the bricks-and-mortar office, and staff working from home (in the Yukon and around the world). The conference will also feature a few soft tech demos, and coding, fundraising and module development will all be discussed. Although technical language will definitely be used at the conference, anyone interested in engaging with open-source technology is welcome. It’s free to attend and lunch will be provided. The conference takes place at the Whitehorse Days Inn on Friday,

The Winterlong Podcasting Co??

Yukon Comedy Festival presents a free comedy event on March 24: the live recording sessions of the popular Los Angeles podcasts Goods from The Woods and This is Rad by Jason Westover

O

n March 24th the Winterlong Brewing Co. will be slinging more than beer when they play host to two popular Los Angeles based podcasts. They’ll be slinging jokes as well, when the podcast shows Goods from The Woods and This is Rad are recorded at the brewery’s Tasting Room in front of a live audience. Admission will be free and is part of the inaugural Yukon Comedy Festival produced by the Yukon Comedy Collective. Podcasts are audio or video broadcasts that are available for downloading online. Content can range anywhere from serialised shows and documentaries to everyday conversations. “The idea for the live podcast event is due to the fact that many of our performers have their own podcasts and it is a burgeoning media format that is a great outlet for comedy,” said Yukon Comedy Collective President Richard Eden. Richard discovered the host of This is Rad, Kyle Clark, when he would occasionally appear on the extremely popular podcast Nerdist. Eden subscribed to Clarks show and immediately loved it.

One episode featured the host of Goods from the Woods, comic Rivers Langley. Eden subscribed to Langley’s podcast and became a fan. As time went on Eden decided to give back. “After a few years I wanted to find a way to contribute to the entertainment I was consuming for free each week. I offered my services as a web developer and the relationships grew from there.” Eden stayed connected to them, eventually booking the podcasters/comics for the Yukon Comedy Festival. Comedy and having fun is at the forefront of both The Goods from the Woods and the This is Rad podcasts. Both podcasts discuss topics rooted in pop culture, yet they have have a distinctly different flavour to them. Both shows began in 2014 and have since grown a loyal fan base, their episodes numbering up to almost 200 each. “This is Rad is all about positivity,” Eden said. “It’s about taking a deep dive into the things you love. Whether it’s a band, a type of food, a TV show or movie. “The Goods from the Woods is

about the expedition into the world of often forgotten pop culture, featuring personal tales and recollections, with occasional bouts of historically accurate information and a lot of comedy.” At the podcast recording Kyle Clark will be joined by his co-host Matt Burnside, while Rivers Langley will be joined by his energetic co host Mr. Good Night. “I think the fun of watching Mr. Goodnight perform live – in pretty much any arena, podcast or otherwise – is the crowd’s reaction to him as a person when he gets going. I have watched many comedy audiences from one side of the country to the other just absolutely come unglued when he starts to do his thing on stage,” Rivers Langley said. Along with providing a unique venue for the podcast recordings, the Winterlong Brewing Co. has played a large role in the development of the comedy festival by stepping up to help The Yukon Comedy Collective achieve its vision and goals. “Winterlong Brewing decided to sponsor the event because we love to support local arts and cul-

Roasted oysters with garlic toasted breadcrumbs, bacon and parmesan .. cont’d METHOD

1

Adjust the oven rack to middle position and set the broiler on high. Add the chopped bacon to a skillet over medium heat and cook until bacon just begins to crisp, add garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute) then add butter. Once the butter has melted, add the breadcrumbs and toss until the breadcrumbs are fully combined with the butter and bacon. Remove from heat and season to taste with salt and pepper.

2 knife in the other hand, place the tip of the knife at the base of the hinge, twist the knife using pressure,

then without the pressure, lever the knife upwards and twist it to force the hinge open. Carefully cut around the shell to loosen the oyster. Then cut the oyster muscle fully from both the top and bottom shell. Keep oyster in the deeper side of the shell and try to keep as much of the oyster liquor in the oyster as possible. Place oysters in their shell on a sheet pan then divide breadcrumb mixture between oysters, top with parmesan and place under broiler for 3 minutes, or until breadcrumbs and parmesan are toasted – serve immediately.

Be careful when you shuck the oysters!

Serve with a bit of lemon Sydney Oland is a recipe developer who lives in Whitehorse. Her work can be found in The Boston Globe, Seriouseats.com as well as other publications.

sledding

Yukon spring The Yukon has an endless snow-capped wilderness in your backyard, it’s spring and time to go BRAAAAP

Discovering new terrain in White Pass

A

s those cold, dark winter days start to fade like a bad memory, Yukoners emerge and many will dust off their snow machines, or sleds, in preparation for popular spring sledding. But what’s the appeal of investing time and money on these machines and venturing into dangerous terrain? While gazing in envy at their impressive photos, I talk to some local sledders to find out more: Ben Craigen, born and raised Yukoner who has been sledding for 25 years; Thomas Pearson, originally from Prince George, B.C. has been sledding in the Yukon for 12 years; Jim Welsh, originally from Ontario has been sledding 25 years and 13 years in the Yukon; and Mark Daniels, born and raised Yukoner and President of the Klondike Snowmobile Association, has been sledding for 40 years, mostly in the Yukon.

What’s the appeal of sledding in the Yukon?

Craigen: From eight years old, I begged my parents for one and they finally caved when I was 12. They were non-motorized recreationists, so they did not understand why I wanted one so badly. Sledding in the Yukon gives you the ability to access some of the most remote and most beautiful terrain that Canada has to offer. It’s just not possible to get to it in a timely manner using selfpropelled means all of the time. These days I use it more as a backcountry chairlift to access new snowboarding terrain. Pearson: I’ve been sledding in the Yukon since 2006. We used to get a lot more snow at the summits, which was always an appeal for us sledders. The amazing thing about Yukon sledding is not only the beautiful scenery, but just the amount of riding areas we have access to if we get the snow. Daniels: The appeal of sledding in the Yukon is the same as sledding anywhere - fun, excitement, camaraderie, fresh air, exercise,

and the enjoyment of nature. The Yukon is unique from many other places in that we offer more freedom here: longer season, more places to ride, more off-trail opportunities, a variety of terrain from groomed trails to extreme backcountry, ability to ride from your house rather than trailering everywhere. Welsh: The Yukon has every kind of sledding. There are mountains with deep snow, ice fields, trail systems and even arctic coast adventures.

I’ve heard there’s been quite a number of sledders out so far this winter, so why is spring the best time for sledding? Pearson: For me personally, I like January/February riding for the dry, crisp powder. Spring is a popular time to ride because the snow conditions are easier to get around in and we get most of our sunshine and warmer temperatures. Spring riding up here can

Long days and beautiful sunsets in spring in Haines Pass

be amazing if we get some big spring storms – which does happen! Welsh: During the spring the snow pack sets up. The conditions can be safer and the travel easier as a result of the consolidated snowpack. There is also the long days and heat in the sun. Daniels: The Yukon, being semi-arid, has “dry” snow that accumulates slowly as the season progresses. It’s also very dark and cold most of the winter. Spring is special for snowmobiling because the days are longer and the

weather is warmer. The dry, fluffy snow sets up so even novice riders can navigate off-trail. Easter weekend at the Haines and Skagway summits are fixtures in the Yukon calendar. Craigen: Spring is special for the longer days when you don’t have the fight against usable daylight hours. Usually it’s your body that tells you the day is over on good spring days. I have actually been out snowmobiling until midnight on some memorable years during mid-May! cont’d on page 13...

Yukon spring sledding ... cont’d

u

Those who ride together, stay together

depend on one sled no matter how new it is. 4. Hang on tight and don’t be afraid of the throttle. Sometimes you have to ride the bucking bronco if you don’t want to get stuck. You’ll understand when your time comes. 5. Be prepared for the costs. It’s not quite a boat, but remember the motto, “If you want to play, you gotta pay.” But ask anyone who does and they will tell you it’s worth every penny... For information about Klondike Snowmobile Association events, or other snowmobiling questions please contact the association by phone at 667-7680 or by email at klonsnow@gmail.com. Kylie Campbell is an Australian writer and photographer exploring the Yukon.

PHOTO: Nita Daniels or glazes over with the spring freeze/thaw cycles. Pearson: I’m lucky enough to have ridden and explored all over the Yukon, so I would say some of the best spots would be Skagway Summit, Atlin and Mayo. Welsh: The White Pass and Haines Pass are always excellent choices. Checking out the area behind Fish Lake, it makes you realize we live in a special place. Craigen: That’s for you to find out! Go explore. All I can say is that White Pass and Haines Pass are great places to start.

What’s the gnarliest thing you’ve ever done? Pearson: Gnarly, hmm, I’m an avid technical tree rider, so honestly, every ride gets pretty gnarly. I like to find steep tree lines and bust an elevator down through the trees to the bottom. That’s always fun. Welsh: I once did a monthlong trip on the Arctic coast. On

Daniels: Riders tend to gravitate to the Haines and Skagway summits in the spring as the snow base there sets up and the snow in the lower elevations disappears

almost the last day my snow machine burned to the ground in 10 minutes, leaving me alone on the ocean waiting for my partner. If I was not prepared with the right equipment it could have been a pretty grim day. Craigen: Ghost riding* sleds down big glacial faces so you can get more turns per lap. It is always unnerving to watch your sled disappear over the fall line and stress over whether or not it is going to make it down safely. Then about a minute later it reappears looking like an ant 2,000 feet below you.

u

I know you’re highly unlikely to divulge your favourite spots to ride, but share some of the best places to sled?

That feeling never goes away! *Ghost riding: A snowboarder/ skier sends their snowmobile down a mountain without a rider and then snowboards/skis down to hopefully meet it.

Ben Craigen’s Top 5 Yukoner Backcountry Sledder tips:

u 1. Take an avalanche course and

educate yourself so you can make your own smart decisions about where to go. How to ride a snowmobile off a trail is overwhelming enough, never mind the fact that you will find yourself in a strange and vertical world way faster that you have ever gotten there before. Bad things can happen fast. 2. Make sure you have the correct gear (avalanche gear, emergency first aid/overnight gear). You have to be self-dependent and definitely cannot expect a timely rescue in the event of a real emergency. 3. A tow rope and a knowledgeable sled buddy are crucial. Never

5:30pm Mary and The Witch’s Flower Dir. H Yonebayashi, 2018, JPN, 102 m This anime adaptation of Mary Stewart’s children’s fantasy novel The Little Broomstick is appropriate for ages 5 and up. Action-packed and full of jawdropping imaginative worlds and ingenious characters, this film is, at its heart, the simple, heartfelt story of a young girl trying to find a place in the world. Directed by a veteran Studio Ghibli filmmaker, this fantasy has messages about believing in yourself, being courageous and generous, and more. The English-dubbed version stars Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent. Family pricing available for this film: $30 for family of up to 5. 7:45pm God’s Own Country Dir. Lee, 2017, UK, 104 m Johnny works long hours on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly bingedrinking at the local pub and casual sex. But when a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. A richly textured and sensual story about the redemptive powers of love and self-acceptance. Mature themes and sexuality; parental guidance recommended. Tix: www.yukontickets.com

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays the Percy deWolfe race

The Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Racers will leave Dawson City on March 22, heading to Eagle and back “The Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race began back in 1977 as a way to honour the legendary Percy DeWolfe, who courageously carried mail by dog team, horse and boat between Dawson City, YT and Eagle, AK, from 1910 and 1949.” John Gould

S

o reads the late John Gould’s short history of the contest. The race is a 210 mile (338 km) run from Dawson to Eagle, Alaska, and back, and is a qualifying race for those hoping to run the Yukon Quest or the Iditarod. This year the race will launch from the Old Dawson Post Office on King Street on Thursday, March 22 at 10 a.m., when musher number one, “the spirit of Percy”, will head off down the street followed, at two minute intervals, by the rest of the pack. Musher number two will carry the official mail pouch, filled with the special “Send a Letter by Dog Team” envelopes that are part of the event’s fund raising efforts and remain available until a few days before the race.

Other fundraising included a number of successful summer barbecues, the food concession during the Yukon Quest, and the Mail Trail Club. For the latter, the trail is divided into 40 five-mile sections and people or organizations can sponsor them at $100 each. There are full descriptions of the sections on the Percy’s Facebook page (www. Facebook.com/PercyDeWolfe). The Percy Junior Race, which is 100 miles (160 km) to Fortymile and return from either Dawson or Eagle, will begin near the ferry landing in Dawson at 3 p.m. Anna Claxton reports that the year’s fund raising has gone well and that the group has the $10,000 prize money, which will be divided by percentages, beginning with 30 per cent to first place, down to 5.5 per cent for seventh place. Prize money for the Percy Junior is a separate pot; it comes from a percentage of the total entry fees. Claxton reports that the Yukon River trail into Alaska is said to be in good shape down river this year and that 10 teams have already confirmed registration for this year’s race. The deadline for signing up is March 15, three days after this interview, and she says that several other people have shown an interest. Once again this year it will be possible to follow the progress of the two races by means of the spot trackers. The live tracking option is available from the Percy’s website (www.ThePercy.com). “(The tracking) makes the race more of a spectator sport,” she said, “instead of just watching them leave and watching them come back 20 hours later.” On the day of this interview the temperatures ranged from -14°C to +1°C. The committee doesn’t want it to be too cold or too warm. Right around -20° with no wind is

Kids from the Robert Service School and the daycares lined the street for the 2017 race start as musher #2 takes off PHOTOS: Dan Davidson the best sort of race day, but it’s very unpredictable. “The weather could do anything between now and then. And I think over the years it has done everything from rain to blizzard.” Most everyone will have returned to Dawson by the evening of March 23, and the event will wrap up with a banquet and awards night on the Saturday, after people have had a chance to catch their breath. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years.
