n a dream and a successful grant, Monique Renaud will visit Whitehorse for the first time to cohost the first Yukon Playwright’s Conference this Saturday at the Old Fire Hall. Renaud is the Public Relations Manager at the Playwrights Guild of Canada and part of their work is to support the guild members across the country. Whitehorse’s Gwaandak Theatre is co-hosting the event with the guild. The Playwrights Guild holds a national conference for project and theatre community development, but it is always near their homebase in Toronto. That annual event will still occur this year, but the concept for the event in Whitehorse came about after people at the Playwrights Guild encouraged Renaud to apply for a project grant. “They said, ‘If you have a dream project, apply for it,’” Renaud said. “So I applied for it.

“I’ve never been to the Yukon and know it has a strong theatre community.” According to Renaud, the intent of the 1-day conference is to bring that community together and inspire each other. The activities include a panel of speakers focusing on how to in-

itiate change in their organizations and a marketing workshop that will help theatre groups come up with a marketing plan for their current projects. A key event will be the “Spring Thaw” Play Readings on Saturday evening. This portion of the event is open to the public and is pay-what-you-can at the door. Featured Yukon playwrights will share readings of their own original scripts. Renaud says that winter is often the time when playwrights hunker down and write new material. The spring thaw concept captures that spirit of re-emergence and renewal, the perfect complement and atmosphere to unveil new works. Registration for the conference is free. Step Outside with Larry Leigh

Let’s use that whole bear

S

adly, black bears have an undeserved reputation of not being very good to eat. A number of Yukon hunters, including me, will dispute that thought as black bear is just as delicious any other animal hunted for meat in the Yukon. As with any hunted species, the quality of the meat will deteriorate very quickly if it is handled poorly right from the start. This includes killing the animal quickly and humanely, getting the carcass skinned and broken down into manageable pieces and getting it cooled down. This is no different than with any other big – or even small – game animal. In either spring or fall, the nights are certainly cool enough to chill the meat to keep it in good shape. A couple of coolers with icepacks or frozen water-filled family sized pop bottles will keep

the meat cool during the warmth of and spring day. Ice cubes or block ice will work, but you have to keep the meat from sitting in the meltwater. Even chilling it well at night and keeping it tarped and out of the sun during the day will keep it well. You can always head for home if the days are warm and your cooling capability is weak. I have not noticed a taste difference between spring and fall harvested black bears. The fall bears are often fatter, but all the spring bears I have dealt with have had a generous amount of fat on them. Also, since having the hide is an additional goal of most hunters, the spring bear, fresh from hibernation has a very thick, glossy hide. I am not a grizzly bear hunter,

Black bear meat can be used to make smokies for outdoor eating but if I was put into a position where I had no choice but to kill a grizzly bear, I would eat all of it, as well. I have eaten grizzly bear on a few occasions and it was fine, but for some reason it has an even worse reputation as far as edibility than does the black bear. Yukon black bears are generally not as big as their counterparts in the south and this results in a smaller amount of meat to deal with. My usual routine over the years was to remove the sirloin tip roasts (the large muscle group that looks like a football) from the hind legs and having everything else made into smokies. There is certainly enough meat for a couple of different flavoured

batches of smokies. (A “smokie” is a cured sausage, like a salami, that requires no further cooking to eat.) Smokies are delicious as is, cooked on a stick over a fire

or nuked for 2 minutes just to get them warm. Unlike other wild-game, bear meat must be cooked to the welldone stage in order to prevent any problems due to trichinosis. Freezing does not prevent this rare situation, only cooking to well-done does. Visualize the tanned hide on the wall, the floor or over the back of the couch and then go to the freezer and get some more smokies ‘cause everybody loves them. That’s a real pain in the back!

Acupuncturist Stephen Potter offers advice on dealing with back pain

H

omo sapiens’ decision to walk upright has brought many benefits, but low back pain however is definitely not one of them. Most people will experience it at some point in their lives, either through lifting something incorrectly, a skiing accident or slipping on ice. We often focus upon the “trauma” that seemed to cause the pain, however, in most cases the structure of the low back was already being pulled out of place by some muscles and tendons being too tight, and still others being too slack. This causes the lumbar spine to be pulled into an incorrect position, so that when you bend/slip/lift, it triggers a muscle spasm and the “Si” (sacroiliac) joint to lock up. If the muscles were in good condition, then most of the time this wouldn’t happen. How, then, should you treat back pain? Acute pain can be reduced by icing; this reduces inflammation and triggers the body to release endorphins that act to block pain. This should be done regularly in the first 48 hours of the injury. A good idea is to also get some acupuncture, as it has been shown in a large German study to be almost twice as effective in treating back pain than conventional treatment i.e. rest and pain killers. Acupuncture has been shown, using an MRI, that it affects the pain receptors in the brain, fooling the body into thinking there’s no pain, so the body stops releasing inflammatory markers and a healing cycle can commence.

Acupuncture can also be used to release off the tight muscles, and strengthen the slack ones. After rest and a few treatments, it would now be a good idea to apply heat, as this relaxes the muscles and encourages blood flow to the injury. Once the pain and inflammation has reduced, one can start doing some rehabilitation exercises to stretch the tight muscles and tighten the slack ones. If you’d like to do some research on managing back pain, a good place to start is with Stuart McGill, who is a Canadian researcher focused on the causal mechanisms of back pain. During his 32-year tenure at University of Waterloo, he produced more than 240 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers and several textbooks. McGill has written extensively on how to rehabilitate backpained people and enhance both injury resilience and performance and it’s well worth the outlay for one of his books. The basic idea is that with the correct exercises you can cure 90 per cent of back pain, and the best place to start is with his “Big 3” exercises that will help most people, most of the time. They only take a few minutes a day, but must be done regularly to have lasting benefits for your back health. You can see a PHOTO: Pixabay video of the exercises on my Facebook page at Facebook.com/AcupunctureStephenPotter.

5 hikes to get a taste of southern Yukon ... cont’d

Fall colours all over the Yukon are incredible and the Fish Lake hike is an easy way to enjoy them.

A reason to drive the South Klondike Highway is admiring the mountains and having a quick visit to Alaska

with endless options, it can be difficult to narrow it down. Here are the top hikes to give you an introduction to the diversity of southern Yukon. 1. Fish Lake, Whitehorse Get your feet wet for hiking in the Yukon with this easy hiking trail that is only half an hour drive from downtown Whitehorse. This hike can take between 2 to 6 hours round trip, depending on your fitness level and, realistically, how long you can keep going along the trails back there as they link to Golden Horn or even onto Mount Lorne. The views are incredible and although the drive is close to Whitehorse, you instantly feel like you are lost in the wilderness without

a single sight of civilisation. This hike is a great introduction for those new to Whitehorse or starting out. It can be icy and boggy lower in the trees until end of July, so bring crampons and hiking poles. An incredible time to head here is in the fall; you might even get to see some wildlife. It’s also a great hike to fit in after work, as the days are long and the hike is short. Plus you can get some fishing in or enjoy a fire and

beer by the lakeside. 2. Tally-Ho, Annie Lake My first solo hike in the Yukon was not a difficult hike, but long one to the Tally-Ho mountain summit. It takes about 1.5 to 3 hours just to get to the base of the mountain to hike up; in total it took 6.5 hours round trip, but could take longer depending on the amount of breaks needed and fitness levels. This area is incredibly beautiful and if you’re lucky you can get some wildlife visits. I spotted a giant stag who was watching me with interest and circling me for about half an hour. And I saw two foxes. Once the trails clear up, this is a popular dirt bike and ATV trail

in summer, so it can be noisy. But just go earlier in the morning while everyone is still asleep. After my hike, I drove to the Wheaton River edge, opened my door and had a nap in my van while the cool breeze blew off the rushing river. Also check out Annie Lake; it’s a beautiful area. However, be prepared for mosquitoes near the lake in summer and bring bug spray. 3. Caribou Mountain, Carcross Within 10 minutes of the start of this hike you have incredible views of Carcross and Bennett Lake and once past the steepest part of the trail, a perfect, bird’s eye view of Emerald Lake. Certainly on par with other steep hikes in the region, be prepared and bring some hiking poles. This trail is relatively easy to navigate and worth the leg burn. During June/July you can see the mountain sheep grazing nearby. 4. Upper Dewey Lake, Skagway, USA This one is on the list because you get to drive one of the most beautiful roads in the Yukon if the weather permits: the South Klondike Highway. I went four times down to Skagway before I actually saw the mountains, but they are well worth the drive. There are many hikes on the way, near Carcross and in the White Pass. Even a simple hike from Fraser to Bryant Lake is only 2 hours return and has some great views for minimal effort. However, the 2 to 3 hour drive to Skagway is a must and the Upper Dewey Lake is an incredibly beautiful hike. There are other easier or shorter options depending on your skill level, such as Lower Dewey Lake or the famous Chilkoot Trail. The Upper Dewey Lake hike takes about 4.5 to 8 hours round trip, there are cabins to sleep in and hiking extensions. It is a steep hike and in spring the trail is icy, so bring crampons and don’t forget your passport. 5. Slim’s River West, Kluane National Park Ready for an overnight trip? The 3-day Slim’s River trail is definitely top of the list for your first overnight hike. It’s a well maintained 3 day day hike on a relatively flat trail, with an easy first and third days that take between 4 to 7 hours for the hike in and the hike out from the base camp one way. The second day is the most difficult, heading up Observation

Mountain. There are a few river crossings, plus the hike up is steep, but the views of the famous nonpolar icefields are well worth it. This is a popular trail, so it’s great to find hiking buddies through social media to join, or do it alone as the trails and base camp area is bustling with people to keep you company. If you’re lucky you might spot a grizzly from the distance and thankfully not spot them up close. All people should visit the Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre in the Da Kų Cultural Centre in Haines Junction before any hike in Kluane, but for overnight trips you must register. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the facility is fantastic for information. If you have never hiked before or done an overnight hike, this is the place to get information, training and support.

Spring: April to June

Expect snow and ice hiking; bring crampons and gaiters. Wildlife are out and about, hungry and with their young – bring bear spray!

Summer: July to August

Waters are flowing, so be prepared for river crossings and potentially boggy sections until it dries up. If venturing near lakes, expect mosquitoes and bring bug spray. Summer is a beautiful time to spot fireweed flourishing. It’s also when we enjoy long daylight hours, so take sunscreen and plenty of water. Depending where you go, it can snow even in July in the mountains, so always be prepared!

Fall: August to October

The colours change and it’s beautiful. This is a popular time for fishing, hunting and also wildlife spotting.

Winter: October to April

Be prepared for temperatures ranging from +10ºC to -40ºC or colder and dress appropriately. These are short days for any trips you make, so take a headlamp. Keep the batteries on your ASHFORD CASTLE, IRELAND body, or else they will freeze.

Dear, dear. This show ain’t casual viewin’

54-40 play the Yukon Convention Centre on Saturday, April 28 at 8 p.m. by David Branigan

Canadian music Hall of Famers 54-40 (left-right: Dave Genn - guitar, Neil Osborne - vocals/guitar, Brad Merritt - bass, and Matt Johnson - drums) have been champions of Canadian rock and roll for 37 years and are still going strong with their 14th album, Keep On Walking, released in January

M

y first 54-40 flash was when the band’s career was burning hot. That is symptomatic of a life lived in rock. Memories are short, what remains is vivid like ayahuasca. The past, present and future sear like a brand, like a Tinder cocktail in a swingers’ bar. It was 1994, the band was coming off their first ever global smash album Dear Dear, which featured “Nice to Luv You” and “She La”. This was peak grunge. I was in year 6 as DJ DNA at the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler, B.C. 54-40 has been described as Canada’s answer to REM, hyper literate, alt-rock, conscious with tight hooks, left coast intel and killer musicianship. 54-40 in Whistler in ’94 were a big deal. I sold out 300 tickets in six minutes. We liked to constantly reinvent the ‘Horn, moving the bands around, for some reason, for this show, we put 54-40 up in the pool table section just off the front entry. Odd placement, can’t remember why we did that. Two songs into the set, the local gendarme did a walk through. The crowd had crushed up to the stage barricade the moment the band kicked off their set with a smokin’ version of “Baby Ran”. The RCMP member says that we have to clear the pathway that usually serves as a walkway to the bathrooms below, as it’s a fire exit. I give him the politest WTF I can. “You want to me stop the show? We’ll do it, you will walk out, they will surge back. What’s the point?” But she persisted, so I go to Neil Osborne as they finish a torrid “One Day in Your Life,” arms waving for a quick, intense conversation; pointing to the blue team. Osborne was not amused. Whistler was like a hometown show for the band. It was nipple hardening excitement in the room that was now coitus interruptus. With Neil glaring at the cops, I advised that we had to move

the crowd back or the authorities were going to stop the show, which would have created a full BC Stanley Cup riot. The crowd steps back. The cops leave. Neil cranks up his lighter, screams, “Fire,” and fans surge back moshing to “Assoholic” before Vancouver’s best burns down the rest of a fierce set. This April 28th will be my third 54-40 show. It sees the boys touring in support of their first major album in seven years, Keep on Walking. They remain a tight foursome with Brad Merrit tweaking the bottom, locking in with killer drummer Matt Johnson. Gonna start dressing, Finer things, Maybe just nothing, Maybe just a dream. These shards of lyrics float through what’s left of my decadence marred mind, the moment I

booked the show for the Territory that raised me. Don’t she look happy now, That he’s gone away from here, Riff after riff falls on my pain like rain. 54-40 stands in rarified air when judged by song catalogue. They started out in U2 territory with the plaintive acoustic rocker “I Go Blind.” The quartet recorded with such major labels as Sony, Columbia, Warner and Reprise, kicking out monsters from 1986 through 2005, filling CanCon alongside contributions from the Hip, Blue Rodeo and Spirit of the West. “One Gun” led the album Show Me. “Baby, Have Some Faith” highlighted their fourth album Fight for Your Love. From that album, released in 1989, through Casual Viewin’ in 2000, 54-40 had four platinum albums and one gold. In 2003, when guitarist Phil

Comparelli left the band and Matthew Good band alum David Genn stepped in, they reloaded with the brilliant album Yes to Everything with its AC-DC influenced “Easy to Love” and reggae tinged “Golden Sun” stand-outs. Then the wet coast Beatles’ recordings receded like hydration from a Burning Man hangover. For the last decade, their career has been in its gardening stage. Few rockers are selling records now that streaming is the thing with hip hop, R&B and country having killed the once immortal rock. Touring and raising families in the utopia that is Victoria, that is life with 54-40 as elder statesmen. But their live set is their métier. Osborne and Co. were inducted into the West Coast Music Hall of Fame in Whitehorse in 2011. Now seven years later, the band has regrouped and is putting real mar-

Their 2018 release is called Keep on Walking, and the lead single, “Sucker For Your Love” is classic guitar driven 54-40. These legends are fired up, rocking out once again. Are you ready to go? 54-40 plays Saturday, April 28 at 8 p.m. at the Yukon Convention Centre as part of Northern Vision Development’s Winter Concert Series presented by Air North, CHON FM, Solid Sound and North of Ordinary Media following the Trews and Delhi to Dublin shows. Tickets can be purchased at brownpapertickets.com. DJ DNA is a gonzo journalist and rock veteran co-existing within family and businessman David Branigan.

assion – that’s the word that comes to mind when I reflect on my recent Cuban holiday in January. The passion of our tour guides throughout our travels. Their devotion to sharing their love of Cuba and how Cubans are working to build a more equitable country. The passion displayed by artists, artisans, musicians and entertainers. The passion in the street art for sale and the murals on the buildings. The passion in the commun-

ity art displayed in the ceramics village of Havana artist José Rodriguez Fuster – all vibrant and simple in their message of love. Fuster has helped to rebuild and decorate the fishing town of Jaimanitas in the outskirts of Havana. I was also moved many times by the beautiful sculptures – one in particular in the Plaza San Francisco de Asís in Havana entitled La Conversación by Étienne Pirot. It was donated to the city by Vittorio Perrotta in September 2012. It represents the need for dialogue in contemporary society. The whole country is vibrant with music, dance and theatre. Live music filled not only the streets, but also all the restaurants. On the last day of our time in Havana, some of the over-60 crowd of our group longed to have a conversation where we could easily hear each other! We sought out a restaurant without live music and managed to find one, although musicians arrived half way through dinner to entertain. Musicians are supported and encouraged and we willingly contributed when the “hat was passed around” and CDs were sold. Trinidad, Cuba is a lively tourist city. We enjoyed the street theatre. At first what appeared to be statues turned into live “improv” theatre. One bronze looking buccaneer became alive when a coin was dropped into his treasure chest. At one moment cavalier – kissing my outstretched hand and the next - pointing a pistol at my husband’s head! What fun! Even when people greet friends or neighbours there is passion in their embrace and connection with each other. They hug, grasp each other’s hands, touch and kiss. It seems to happen no matter same sex or opposite sex. Our guide talked about Fidel’s belief in the equality of the sexes and acceptance of people of diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds and sexual orientation.

Since the invasion of the Spanish, enslaved workers from Africa and labourers from China have all appeared to have shaped and influenced Cuban culture over the last 500 years, although little remains of the original indigenous people. We were surprised to see a gateway with Chinese script and signs for a synagogue and a mosque in Havana. I learned of Santeria, a traditional African religion that incorporates some elements of Catholicism. Throughout Cuba, there were statues and monuments to many heroes of the independence movement – males, that is, with only two statues of women that I saw. One, a literary figure and the other I think was a medical worker or educator. Cuba boasts nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Old Havana, along with four other cities/towns, a coffee plantation, a tobacco growing area, a fort, and two national parks. Many cities in Cuba have restored their buildings and there are stunning examples of various kinds of architecture: neoclassical, Cuban baroque, and colonial. Although I know little about architecture, I loved looking at the intricate scrollwork, the marble columns, the balconies and stained glass. Cubans have developed organic farming techniques based on the symbiotic relationship of plants and animals, and have recognized the importance of reusing, recycling and restoration. We visited a fascinating cocoa farm and a small subsistence coffee farmer. Our local guide from the Baracoa region was passionate in sharing traditional stories and information about the geography, flora and fauna. He was a former teacher in an agricultural school. We learned that bananas and cocoa are grown together because bananas provide potassium and moisture for the cocoa plants. The farmers have developed plantcont’d on page 11...

ing techniques to retain moisture in the soil. He was visibly moved when I told him that he had a gift for storytelling and teaching, I told him that I hoped he would have an opportunity to get back to teaching other Cuban young people. Although we didn’t have the opportunity during this visit, there is an ecotourism industry in Western Cuba that I thought would be interesting to explore. I wandered into a bookstore in Bayamo in Eastern Cuba and was surprised to find copies of books by Canadian Naomi Klein, La Doctrina del Shock (The Shock Doctrine) and No Logo. I was reminded again that I must read Naomi Klein’s writings. I also found a copy of a book called Paulo Freire Entre Nosotros (Paulo Freire Among Us). Freire’s ideas about popular education were familiar to me due to my adult education and community development background. We visited a primary school in a village that had very limited resources. Our guide had a special connection to the school and told us he regularly visits and takes school supplies to the students whenever passing through the area. I didn’t feel comfortable taking pictures of the children and giving out chocolates and other treats like some members of our group. I decided that when I got home I would make a contribution to the charitable foundation established by the tour company, to which tour participants were encouraged to contribute. The coming year will bring changes, challenges and new leadership with Cuba’s upcoming election in April to replace President Raul Castro. I hope that they’re able to sustain their passion for their country and stay true to the values that Fidel espoused. I feel positive and hopeful for Cuba. Lillian Nakamura Maguire, a retired rural Whitehorse resident enjoys writing plays, personal essays, haiku and exploring other creative expressions.

A funky little family

Café des Voix is always looking for new talent by Michael Bramadat-Willcock

Y

ukon accompanist Grant Simpson helped found Café des Voix in 2016 as an extension of Jazz Yukon workshops that had been occurring since 2011 and as “a safe and supportive space for local vocalists to learn and perform.” Today, the program is still going strong, with almost 30 members. Café des Voix presents both new and well-known melodies and sometimes features guest musicians, too. An eclectic range for jazz and jazz-inspired tunes are chosen by participating vocalists and by Simpson himself, rehearsed

in studio and then performed. The concept for Café des Voix grew out of a desire on the part of Simpson and jazz enthusiasts in the Territory to help vocalists develop their talents and to make jazz performance more accessible in the Yukon. Simpson offers performance workshops in an environment where vocalists and musicians can try new things and push their boundaries in the company of like minded people. “It’s a developmental outlet combining performance with rehearsal,” he said. “There’s really nothing like performing in front of an audience to bring them to the next level. There’s something about being in public that makes you focus in a way that you don’t in rehearsal. It broadens the experience.” Among other things Simpson’s workshops include voicework, as much theory as a vocalist needs in order to perform with a pianist and some music history to get people’s jazz juices flowing in context.

Pianist Grant Simpson, left, bassist Rob Bergman, and singers Lillian Strauss, Coralie Langevin and Elaine Schiman The group is more than just about practice and performing, however. It’s about building community. Simpson calls Café des Voix a space for professionals and novices alike to interact as part of the greater Yukon jazz community. “It’s become a support network for everyone involved. We’re a funky little family and we have a lot of fun together.” People drop in when they want, with a core group of dedicated members. Simpson hopes

that more will join. Along with Grant Simpson Music, Jazz Yukon, local venues, audiences and musicians Café des Voix is also starting a new partnership with the Yukon Francophone Association (l’AFY). The resulting program encourages participants to sing in their second language, be it English or French. “Singing in another language opens up all sorts of new doors for people and it’s something that a few of our cont’d on page 15 ...

The tripod is on the ice between the river bank and the unofficial ice road. It may be carried away by the flowing ice, or it may sink as the ice melts from beneath it. Either movement will stop the clock.

T

he ice pool tripod is in the river, anchored by a cable to the boxed clock on the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, ready for when the ice moves during breakup some time in late April or early May. A statistical prediction created by local engineer, Stephen Johnson, offers a 17 per cent chance that the ice will head down river on May 4 “at precisely 2:43 a.m.” However, Johnson also said that

statistics are not to be trusted. Last year the river broke up on May 3 at 10:04 a.m., but it has been as early as April 23 (2016) and as late as May 28 (1964). You can check all the available dates and times on a searchable spreadsheet on the YukonRiverBreakup.com website. One thing that is certain is that some factor (climate change?) is causing the date to tend to be earlier over the 123 years that the event has

been recorded. While the contest has been running in some form since 1896, it has been in the hands of the IODE since the 1940s, and is their major fundraising event of the year. During the March 23 Ice Pool Kick Off event (the first ever), Mayor Wayne Potoroka explained that the funds are used for a variety of charitable causes. “The money raised in this contest goes back into the community as Christmas presents for seniors, assistance for the Women’s Shelter, the Humane Society, Food for Learning, Girls’ Rock Camp and families in need. [The IODE] also gives a $500 scholarship for a worthy Robert Service School graduate, and buys books for newborn Dawsonites. My daughter still has the one she was given. “The ice pool is the largest of their fundraising efforts, so please do your part and support the IODE by guessing often. Every ticket you buy helps our community.” Tickets for the Ice Pool Contest will be PROGRAM: on sale in Dawson and NORTHERN INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL JUSTICE TRAINING NORTHERN INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL JUSTICE TRAINING PROGRAM: at some locations in other towns

until April 15. Between now and the actual event, an increasing number of residents will be seen walking the dyke trail daily, looking for signs of deteriorating ice cover. Someone will be watching when the tripod moves. That person will notify the fire department to sound the siren. Minutes later, regardless of the time of day or night, the river bank will be crowded with people wanting to see the movement. There will be a crowd on the west bank, as well. By the time this sees print, the unofficial ice road will no longer be safe to use and people in West Dawson and Sunnyvale will be looking forward to the launching of the George Black ferry, which should be in the water before the Victoria Day weekend in May.

Struggling against gravity

Part 1 of 2

Matt Hosford tells us about his personal experience of the Chena River to Ridge: 25 and 50 Mile Multi-Sport Endurance Race

Participants collected their bibs and shirts at the registration table

by Matt Hosford Sart of Race I looked up at the cawing ravens flying over head, passively flapping their wings and circling me as I ran. They glided with such ease as if to point out their superior wings to my two gravity abiding stumps. I was envious. I had just past the 1 mile marker and I was already starting to sweat. I was working hard to move through the soft snow, huffing uncharacteristically for the speed I was moving. Over a foot of snow had fallen within the past five days and it hadn’t settled. Every step sunk down a few inches, like running on a sandy beach. Bobby Gillis, the race director mentioned that Fairbanks had an unusually high snowfall this year; not exactly ideal for a foot race. Fortunately, the course had been plowed via snowmobile dragging a pulch the night before. Our plowed trail was essentially a three foot wide ditch between two walls of snow. Step off this path and you’d find yourself waist deep in snow. We were truly bound to the trail.

The River to Ridge course lies 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Fairbanks in the Chena River State Recreation Area. Each participant could choose between fat biking, cross country skiing or running a 25 mile (40 km) or 50 mile (80 km) course. Due to the high snow volume, the 50 mile course was altered from two different 25 mile loops to the same 25 mile loop, twice. Veterans of winter racing and others with general common

The Climb When I passed this 1 mile marker, it dawned on me that this excuse to adventure out to Fairbanks was going to be a struggle, rather than the fun run that I’d signed up for. Running in the snow felt more like jumping than the natural flowing stride you get on solid ground. Skis were definitely the weapon of choice today. Fat bikers were having a tough time as well. I traded places with a biker for the first few miles, taking over him on the uphills and being passed by him on the downhills. cont’d on page 23 ...

sense analyzed the recent snowfalls and traded in their runners for skis. If only I had been so smart. This year marked the sixth anniversary for the River to Ridge, which began in 2011. Bobby Gillis took over as race director three years ago because he wanted to keep “this amazing event alive.” This will be his last year as director and he said, “I am hopeful that someone will take the reins for next year to keep it going. It’s a special event.” Pre-race orientation and check-in was done in a warm cabin near the start line. The atmosphere in there was cozy and relaxed. Everyone seemed to know each other and were slowly packing their things. It felt more like an outdoor club meetup than the regular pre-race registration where you usually see participants frantically packing bags, stretching and more or less “getting in the zone.”

CONDOR AIRLINES is offering a round-trip flight for one person, Whitehorse, Yukon, to Frankfurt, Germany, government taxes and fees not included. The trip cannot be split into two separate flights. If the second ticket is not used, it has no cash value. The offer is exclusively available to the winner of the contest which means only their name must be on the submission. Travel needs to be completed by September 15, 2018. The prize is not transferable and has no cash value. Room, food, and other travel expenses are the responsibility of the winner and guest.

Struggling against gravity ... cont’d

Participants hangout prerace in the warming hut Race director Bobby Gillis gets ready at the start line

At mile 5, we hit the ridge and began the 2.5 mile climb. The fat biker was left to slowly push his 30 pound steed to the ridge while skiers stopped to re-apply wax. Once on the ridge, the trail flattened and the snow covered alders thinned, giving way to views of the wide valley from which we had come. My spirits lifted thinking that I could make up some ground to the approaching aid station. What I wasn’t prepared for was the added snow on the ridge. It turned out that our side of the ridge was heavily wind loaded – meaning snow had blown off the adjacent slope and piled up on the trail side. Post-holing, literally plunging knee or hip height into unpacked snow, was now added to the growing list of course obstacles. A snowmobile passed me halfway along the ridge. I pulled over to let the sled by however, my half step off the trail brought me down to my waist and I face planted into the powder. I rolled onto my back and tried without success to push myself up. Instead I flailed around like a flipped turtle on its shell as the sledder continued on; a scene of pity and comedy in equal measure. My initial reaction was relief to see the sled compacting the trail. In reality, the holes created by earlier runners had only

25-mile runner Blair Phelps sets his watch before the race been lightly covered with a hollow base. Now, the trail felt like playing a game of minesweeper. Every four or five steps you would hit a bomb and be ankle deep in snow. While post holing for the fifth consecutive time, I began to laugh hysterically, like a deranged man filled with both anger and bemusement. These obstacles were inconveniences and while I was enjoying the adventure, I could

not ignore that I was not even half way and my body was starting to show fatigue. I also could not keep thinking of the Alaskans ahead of me who were crushing this race in comparison.
