hat 69-year-old chooses an activity that routinely results in numb hands, painful wrists and soreness in an area that makes it difficult to perform certain necessary bodily functions? Well, it turns out that there are quite a number of these folks in the Yukon. I am referring to “road cyclists” who participate in the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay (KCIBR), now in its 26th year. This relay goes from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska, in mid June, and can be done as a team of two, four or eight people. It can also be done solo (the entire 240 kilometres), and there is even the “odd” senior cyclist who attempts this feat. Personally I would rather not even imagine what it is like to sit on a bike seat for 10-12 hours! More than 1200 cyclists take part.

As soon as the paved roads are dry and the shoulders swept (or not), you will see these hardy souls pedalling along. This, itself, is not a pastime for sissies. Some of the vehicle drivers do not seem to be aware of the fragility of a road bike, and the person on it, compared to the mass and speed of their mode of transportation. And when a semi or bus-sized RV roars by, it is a matter of clinging to one’s handgrips and trying to ride a straight line regardless of the wind gusts and shock waves. The seniors are usually the ones out during the day, when the younger folks are confined to their jobs. They always wear their helmets and dress in colourful jackets for visibility. They generally sport the prerequisite Spandex pants, despite the age-related bulges. Off the bike they may appear to

be wearing diapers, but this is just the several layers of padding required to be able to tolerate the rock-like saddles of road bikes. Then there is the wind. It seems there are far more strong south winds than there used to be, and to do a training ride, one has to either cycle north or south on the Alaska Highway. I usually choose to go south, hoping that the wind doesn’t change while I am out there. My early rides of the season are to McCrae and back (20km round trip). I gradually work on extending that to the Carcross corner (40 km return) or beyond. It depends which leg of the relay I am riding that year. I ride on an eight-person team of seniors, and every year we try to switch legs. Each leg has cont’d on page 3 ...

Seniors on Speed ... cont’d its particular challenges. These range from the mass start to the long, gruelling uphills, to the terror-inducing descents. On one of the steepest downhills, I happened to glance at my speedometer and found I was doing 69 km/ hr! I didn’t dare look down again, clutching my handgrips and concentrating on not wobbling. Sometimes the scenery is so spectacular it is difficult to concentrate on riding. The last few-hundred metres are through the town of Haines and into the famous Parade Square, hopefully to the cheers of one’s teammates. For a team such as ours, the “winners” are long in. The entire day is a lot of fun and worth the discomforts. We follow along in our vehicles with each of the riders offering drinks, snacks, help in the case of a breakdown (and lots of encouragement). We don’t hit the bar at the end of the race and we don’t camp in the parade grounds. Af-

Tickling the ivories under the midnight sun

On June 12, listen for the sound of piano music, around town, as the Whitehorse Street Pianos Project launches and Michael Kishchuk plays classics, ragtime and more

ince 2008, over 10-million people across the globe have been part of an art project that placed 1,890 street pianos at 75 installations in 60 cities, including the likes of New York, London, Tokyo and Sao Paulo. The creation of British artist Luke Jerram, the Play Me, I’m Yours art exhibit (profiled on www.streetpianos. com), inspired local musician Grant Simpson that there was an opportunity to do a made-in-the-Yukon version. “I realized that we’re not going to get an art installation here,” Simpson said. “But thought we can do something ... so I bought an old piano, and my girlfriend [Shauna Jones] painted it.” The concept proved popular when Simpson posted his idea on social media, and support and financial backing was offered to launch the initiative. That type of support isn’t always there when artists embark on a new endeavour, so Simpson appreciated the community enthusiasm. “I posted it and it blew up with amazing response and people funding it,” he said. “I had to cap [the numbers] to keep it manageable, and we went from there. “I thought it would be cool for a piano student to go around and play on them all summer.” The Whitehorse Street Pianos project will launch June 12, with shows on Tuesday through Saturday from a born-and-raised Yukoner, Michael Kishchuk of Whitehorse. The role was a great opportunity for Kishchuk, who attends Dalhousie University during the school year. He grew up playing piano, having learned from Annie Avery, who taught him a love of the old ragtime music. As a result, he can play a wide variety

Michael Kishchuk (front) and Grant Simpson get set on the Horwoods Mall piano of music, including favourites like “Maple Leaf Rag,” “The Entertainer,” “Solace,” and several others “not by Joplin.” He can also perform a few classics, such as Mozart’s “Rondo alla Turca” and the first movement of the “Moonlight Sonata” (to be played under that glorious midnight sun). “[Avery] taught me a lot of ragtime and jazz,” Kishchuk said. “Seeing the job was too good to be true, I applied for it immediately.” It was also too good to be true for Simpson, who had seen Kishchuk play for him and Avery last summer. “Michael’s a perfect fit for it,” Simpson said. “You need to be a tourism ambassador and be confi-

dent and carry yourself well.” Simpson notes that he’s always building on his ideas, so the the project also launched another idea, the Whitehorse Street Piano Festival that takes place on June 16 and 17. If the pianos are going to be there, why not make use of them? “I thought it would be an opportunity to show the talent of local piano players,” Simpson explained. The two-day festival will feature local piano players, around downtown Whitehorse, playing at the piano installations. The festival will feature 30 mini concerts over the two days (see inset for schedule). For more information

Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

here is a new sound in town! On Thursday June 21, Lucie D and the Immortals will debut their new EP, Les Thèmes de la Vie (Themes of Life), from 7 to 9 p.m. at Baked Café. The new collaborative band consists of Lucie Desaulniers, as lead vocalist; Lonnie Powell, on drums/batterie; Paul Bergman, as bassist/contrebasse, vocals and choeurs; Andrea McColeman, on piano, background vocals and choeur; and Olivier de Colombel, on saxophone, vocals and choeurs. The ensemble incorporates a jazzy and interesting pop sound, fused with a European flair that showcases their collective musical experience and versatility. The evening will consist of Lucie D and the Immortals performing both original compositions, during their first set; and fun, upbeat cover versions of hit songs for the second set. Also, a special guest performance by one of Barbara Chamberlin’s choirs will be kicking off the evening as the show’s grand opener on what will be one of the longest days of the year! The program ran at Robert Service School (RSS) from May 8–11. Students in all grades, from K–12, learned about ways to maintain clean water and protect fish habitat, before painting a wooden fish in their own design. These painted wooden “dream-

fish” were installed on the fence of the school as a reminder that “all drains lead to fish habitat.” Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Education and Robert Service School invited the program to Dawson: it emphasises the importance of clean water, protection of fish habitat, and general environmental stewardship. As well, Stream of Dreams offers a hands-on way for students to create a lasting reminder of these ideas for the whole community, through a mural of dreamfish. The wooden fish are cut and prepared by the North Fraser Pre-

trial Centre in Port Coquitlam, B.C. They are in the shapes of salmon, burbot and pike, to represent fish in the local area. The Stream of Dreams project at RSS was supported by Yukon Salmon Sub-Committee, the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the City of Dawson, and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in. Each participant paints a wooden fish that is installed onto a chain link fence as a legacy of the project. These murals represent hope for a future with healthy watersheds. Stream of Dreams educates communities about the life function of their watershed, with the main focus on salmon and stormdrain pollution. The program hopes to inspire youth to save the world. Stream of Dreams believes that communities who participate are inspired and their passion is painted on every dreamfish. The focus of the program is a whole school eco-education that educates communities about their local watershed, rivers and streams, encourages behavioural change to conserve and protect water, empowers youth to make a positive environmental impact and creates a community art legacy by and for the whole community. he Frantic Follies Vaudeville Show was a staple for Yukoners and visitors alike for 47 years, bringing gold-rush themed vaudeville performances to the stage. Last year, owner Grant Simpson lowered the curtain on the show and it appeared that it would be the end of an era for Yukon performing arts. But some things are too good and too well loved to be left to ride off into the sunset. After the show’s close, Northern Vision Development approached Simpson about putting together a new show to bring to stage at the Yukon Convention Centre—and the Klondike Follies Cabaret was born. “[Northern Vision food and beverage manager] David Branigan asked if I could put together a new show,” Simpson said. “If we could come up with a new concept and idea. “Last year [there] were two test shows and the response was overwhelming. This year we’ve developed it further, for eight weeks.” To make the show sustainable, the Klondike Follies is aiming to become a destination not only for

tourists exploring the territory and our Klondike Gold Rush history, but also as a show for Yukoners to enjoy multiple times. The show won’t simply repeat the same performance each week, as Simpson and the cast are preparing to mix it up and explore new talents. “We’re scaling up to something that locals and tourists can enjoy,” Simpson explained. “We are planning to have different headliners, each week, and working to include something different each week that incorporates in the headliner to the skits. “The cast are working on different skits and versions of the skits. Locals can get to three shows and see different shows each time.” A theme of the show will be to explore new talents and expand beyond the traditional Follies skits. Simpson has written the opening song using Stompin’ Tom Connors’ “Long Gone to the Yukon” and has made it into an arrangement for a big production. He also noted that he’s excited to have cast Malo Gendreau, an aerial silk artist who will recreate a modern version of Klondike Kate’s famous “Flame Dance.” The Klondike Follies is a truly made-in-the-Yukon show, with Simpson leaning heavily on local performing talent to both cast and produce the show. The skits are locally developed and most are written by Yukoners Grant

Hartwick and Dale Cooper, while Yukoner Allyn Walton is a co-producer and manager of the cancan performers. Simpson credits Walton with having a better eye than he does. “She makes the show look good,” he said. Shauna Jones is also developing acts for the show, including an expanded version of the humorous “Banana Dance” that may be familiar to previous showgoers. Without giving too much away, Simpson noted that the skit involves a gorilla peeling a banana. The headliners are a key new addition to the show, and Simpson has reached out to a mix of old favourites and unique acts who provide a wide variety of talents to showcase. To launch the season, Simpson recruited a Yukon icon, Gillian Campbell, who he felt was the best choice to kick off the new format and vaudeville show. Campbell moved to Dawson City in 1967 to be part of shows there and, in the ’70s, had developed her own show, The Klondike Kate Show. It featured her as Klondike Kate and has been in demand all over Canada and the world, ever since. “Gillian is probably the most entrenched showbiz gal in the territory,” Simpson said. “She wasn’t up for Rendezvous this year, so it just seemed right.”

Simpson has secured some other big headliners including musician Roy Forbes, who was known as “Bim” when he started performing, and will be timing his visit with a booking at the Atlin Music Festival. Forbes, who hails from Dawson Creek, B.C., is a talented guitar player whose playing is heavily influenced by acoustic blues and traditional country music. “Roy is like a folk legend,” Simpson said. “He was able to come out on stage with himself and a guitar, and command a room.” Forbes is a big act to accommodate, so Simpson needed to coordinate with the Atlin Music Festival and come up with a bit of incentive to get him on stage. “I’ve known Roy for a long time, and he started pitching me about putting “Saskatchewan Moon” in the show,“ Simpson laughed. “So when I started this show and gave him a call, I asked, ‘So you wanna put that song in the show or not?’ He’s doing it because it’s fun.” Wes Barker, a stunt magician who was named the Variety Performer of the Year by the Canadian Organization of Campus Activities, in 2017, will headline another week. His act includes magic tricks, stunts and comedy, a combination that enabled him to stump famous Las Vegas magicians Penn and Teller on episode five of their Netflix show, Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Yukoner Chelsea Hartwick will also return home from Vancouver to headline this summer. A product of the Whitehorse dance scene, Hartwick has built a career from her passion for dance. She has be-

come a cabaret star with her work with Vancouver performance companies such as Cabaret Torlage and Army of Sass. The season will also feature three special “Yukoner” nights which, according to Simpson, will feature local talent doing their thing. These shows will be onenight-only affairs on June 30, July 28 and August 25 and, this season, the three Yukon guest stars will be Kevin Barr, Joe Loutchan and Nicholas Mah. And Simpson would like to feature even more Yukon talent if he has his way. If folks think they have an act that would be a good fit for the new show, they should contact him. “We’re on the lookout for interesting Yukon acts that would work with the show,” Simpson explained. “We kind of are calling it, So You Think You Can Folly?” The Klondike Follies Cabaret shows will take place three times each week, beginning on June 26, 28 and 30. There are three levels of tickets available: a basic show ticket of grandstand-style seating, a show and dinner ticket, and VIP tickets that feature table service. The territorial government and the RCMP are among others who have raised Pride flags, and last summer saw the painting of two crosswalks into the well-known

The parade will travel along Main Street and 6th Avenue, to the White Pass Building, then along Front Street to Shipyards park—a new leg for the 2018 parade. his month, Yukon Pride: 24 Hours of Gaylight is happening for the sixth year in a row—and it just gets bigger every year. With more people involved and more events happening, 2018’s edition of 24 Hours of Gaylight is a hotly anticipated weekend for the LGBTQ2S+ community and allies. During Pride Month, the downtown areas of several cities are made over into parade routes and are swarmed with thousands of supporters, but there is something special about seeing this take place in a smaller, more-rural place like Whitehorse. A celebration of similarities and differences somewhere with millions of people is great, but it is obvious that diversity exists in those places. One might not think of how much of that there can be somewhere like the Yukon, and Pride Yukon is the opportunity to show and celebrate what a range of people and experiences this territory has. Stephanie Hammond is the president of Queer Yukon Society, a board of six people. As she discusses the format of this year’s Pride events, it is clear that this is a welcoming environment where all are welcome to come out and participate. Hammond has seen the community grow over the past five years that Yukon Pride has been taking place. “Regardless of whether people identify as being part of the queer community, it’s a really great way to show support for the commun-

‘Serving laughs straight from the oven’

The Yukon Comedy Collective presents Baked Laughs, monthly stand-up comedy nights at Baked Café

he Whitehorse comedy scene is on a roll as of late. There have been pro comic events at the Guild Hall, the Ride for Dad Comedy Night, the creation of the Yukon Comedy Collective and the Yukon Comedy Festival. Seasoned Yukon comics have also been getting opportunities to perform outside of the territory, and an influx of new performers are gracing Yukon stages. In short, it’s a good time to have a funny bone. One of the events that has helped cultivate this resurgence has been Baked Laughs, the Yukon Comedy Collective stand-up nights presented monthly at Baked Café, 100 Main Street, in the Horwood’s mall. The show has been running strong since its inception in April 2017 and is produced by longtime stand-up and improv comic, George Maratos. Although Maratos has held comedy nights at various Whitehorse locations in the past, he feels the smaller and quaint atmosphere of the licensed Baked Café is a moresuitable home for the audience and its performers. “I always felt comedy’s better when your right up there with the crowd, and I wanted to have a venue that was a little more comic-friendly for new people and more intimate according to size. I also think because it’s a coffee shop, we’re bringing in a different audience rather than the bar. For people who don’t like the bar, the coffee shop is appealing, and you can still get a drink,” he said. Baked Laughs is an open-mic event, sprinkling seasoned and new performers together, with each performing five- to sevenminute comedy sets. A large portion of Baked Laughs is stand-up comedy; however, the event is billed as an “evening of stand-up comedy, storytelling, poetry and more.” Maratos conceptualised Baked Laughs to encourage all forms of live comedy. His idea was to open the floor to performers, as a variety show rather than just stand-

up comedy, to encourage community participation on stage. “I was looking for a way to get more comedians ou, and I figured if it was marketed as not just a stand-up show, it would help people get adjusted. It’s a different style of comedy,” said Maratos. Another reason Maratos chose performing at the Baked Café, over a traditional bar, was to help attract a wider range of audience and performers. Marley Tredger is a 17-yearold comic who began performing stand-up last year. Because Baked Café doesn’t have the same age restrictions as a bar may have, she is able to hone her comedy craft and continue her stand-up act at Baked Laughs, on a regular basis. “It is consistently my favourite show to do. The crowd is always a lot of fun. The comics are ridiculously talented and it’s been an absolute joy being able to work with them,” said Tredger. Another regular performer is Oshea Jephson. Jephson was encouraged to try stand-up—for the first time, at Baked Laughs—and was hooked. “It really is a little family. No one is there to beat you down or make you quit. People are excited to laugh, and if you can do that, you’ve tapped into the best drug there is,” he said. Baked Laughs continues to showcase new and existing comedy talent in Whitehorse, and Maratos encourages both audience and performers to check it out. “Once a month you get to come out and laugh your butt off for two hours. We need more laughter in the world, and Baked Laughs provides that. It’s in a licensed coffee shop and it provides a comfortable environment. I can’t imagine not having a regular comedy night in Whitehorse.”

t’s the longest day of the year, and what better way to appreciate this new Yukon statutory holiday than to visit local First Nations and to be part of this national celebration and enjoy live music, artist demonstrations, traditional food, ceremonies and more.

Summer solstice is a busy time for Dawson City, with the city vibrating with events under the midnight sun. A showcase of local and visiting musicians, primarily fiddle players, including local Ecka Janus, will be performing. The cultural centre will be open to the public and there will be events for kids. Moosehide Gathering hosts a concession fundraiser with an affordable barbecue lunch.

Whitehorse – Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwach’an Council at Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre

The National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) will be jam-packed with activities and programming. Kwanlin Dün First Nation, Ta’an Kwach’an Council and the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre are all partners in this celebration held in Whitehorse. Opening ceremonies will begin at noon at the KDCC fire pit, with demonstrations and a local arts market along the Yukon River. Main-stage performances will span throughout the afternoon and evening and will feature dance groups from across the Yukon, as well as a variety of musical performances. The Solstice Feast, sponsored by NorthwesTel, will kickoff after the opening ceremonies. This is a free feast open to all. National Aboriginal Day is celebrated in communities across the Yukon: Carcross: Carcross Commons Carmacks: Location varies each year Dawson City: Dänoja Zho Cultural Centre

NND Government House, in Mayo, will play host to a number of performances and workshops throughout the day, and lunch and dinner will be provided. The themes for the 2018 Aboriginal Day celebration are the ruling of the Peel Watershed court case and honouring youth. At this year’s event, there will be a youth mural project with Northern Tutchone artist Lianne Charlie.

Your Backyard The Tintina Trench The Yukon sliced in two ....

There was a not-so-urban myth out there that you could see the Tintina Trench from the moon. That is not true, unless the person on the moon had a good telescope. You can see the Tintina Trench from space, though, from the International Space Station. Most of the rest of us will have to use Google Earth, which shows it just as well too.

he Tintina Trench is a geological feature that cuts the territory in a slightly kinked, almost straight line. From Watson Lake in the southeast it runs to just south of Ross River, through Faro, on to Stewart Crossing, then just north of Dawson. Downstream, northwest of Dawson, the trench picks up the Yukon River as it flows past Forty Mile, across the border to Eagle and just past Circle, Alaska.

The easiest way to see it is on the Yukon Geological Survey terrane map. Terranes are groups of different rocks that are related. On the map you can see the big difference in colours representing different terranes on either side of the Tintina Trench. The Tintina Trench is actually a series of parallel faults in the rock in a zone anywhere from one to 15 kilometres wide and 1,000 kilometres long. The fault is what

is known as a strike-slip fault. The ground doesn’t move up or down, the two sides along either side of the fault slide or slip horizontally in different directions. Pretend you are standing still on one side of the fault, facing your friend on the other side of the fault. If your friend appears to be moving to your right, the fault it is called right lateral. If your friend moves to your left it is left lateral.

If you and your friend hung out on the Tintina fault for the duration, not only would you be really old, but your friend would be about 430 kilometres to your right. Dawson City and Ross River were actually those “friends,” a long time ago. Dawson and Ross River were only a few kilometres apart, but on different sides of the fault. Modern geophysical tools allow geoscientists to see deep within

the Earth’s crust. Surveys across the Tintina Trench have sent seismic waves many kilometres down into the crust to record the reflections that come back. Much the same way that oil and gas companies explore today, but much deeper. The survey indicated a steep-sided break in the rocks, all the way through the crust, down to a depth of 30-plus kilometres. Today, the Tintina system is relatively quiet—both movement and earthquake wise—compared to the southwest Yukon. The drive between Ross River and Dawson should not be getting stretched longer in the near future. The Tintina Trench is related to the Rocky Mountain Trench in British Columbia. Running south of the Yukon border, the Rocky Mountain Trench continues south through Mackenzie, Valemount , Golden, past Cranbrook and into Montana. The first written reference of the name “Tintina Trench” was by Joseph Keele in a 1904 Geological Survey of Canada Annual Report. The word is referenced to be from the Tahltan language. This linear break through many mountain ranges served as a natural transportation route to the First Peoples here. The lowlands were generally full of rivers or lakes. The Tintina Trench ... cont’d Yukon Geological Survey—Terrane Map

Between Stewart Crossing and the Dempster turnoff, you will zig zag across the trench about four times. It won’t be easy to see exactly where this happens along the highway. Keep the trench in mind as you travel. See if you can spot any indications as you drive along. There are a number of good vantage points along the route to safely pull over and look at the general topography and see if you can spot any features of the Tintina Trench. The best place to start your Klondike Highway Tintina Trench drive is at either end of the section. In the North , the Government of Yukon rest area, about 60 kilometres south of Dawson City, is dedicated to the Tintina Trench. Interpretative panels show how glaciation has changed the flow of major rivers in the trench. At the other end of this section, by the north end of the bridge, over the Stewart River, is an outcropping of rock. This is one of the few areas you will see bedrock by the highway, near the trench, and one of the most colourful for sure. If you are on the Faro–Ross River section, the Lapie River, crossing on the South Canol Road, is worth the stop. It’s about six kilometres south from the Robert Campbell Highway intersection. Here you are very close to the southwestern edge of the trench, with good exposures of rock along the river. See if you can see any indications of the faulting .

on the Pacific Flyway for swans, cranes and other migratory birds. Before GPS, pilots relied on the long, straight valleys of both the Rocky Mountain and Tintina Trench systems for navigation in poorer weather. The fault system was thought to have started moving about 170-million years ago, with the majority of movement occurring 70- to 110-million years ago. The exact rate of movement is not known and it probably varied. The best modern-day analogy to the Tintina system is the very active San Andreas Fault in southern California. It, too, is a right lateral fault slowly moving the Los Angeles area up the coast towards Alaska. Its rate of movement averages two to four centimetres a year, but there can be big jumps. The huge 1906 San Francisco earthquake moved the ground eight metres all at once. You can actually drive along the trench on our beautiful Yukon highways. The section of the Robert Campbell Highway between Faro and Ross River travels right along the trench. The longest section for driving along the trench is the 135-kilometre section be-

tween Stewart Crossing and the Dempster Highway turnoff on the North Klondike Highway. You will not see too many rocky outcrops on either highway. The fault systems generally form low areas, which, over the millennia, fill with sediments and glacial till. The section between Ross River and Faro is almost entirely overlain by thick glacial tills made of sand, silt and cobbles. The area from Stewart Crossing to Dawson did not experience the last glaciation but has undergone a long period of erosion and buildup of residual soils. If you are travelling north on the Klondike Highway, a couple of kilometres past the Ethel Lake turnoff is the spot where the fault is mapped as crossing the highway. Although you will not see too much indication of it as you drive. Actual closeup evidence of the faults themselves has been uncovered farther north. Placer miners on All Gold Creek , about 55 kilometres south of Dawson, reported areas “hundreds of feet wide” of bedrock gouged and crushed to sand. Highways work in that area has also uncovered similar occurrences.

Paying homage to a band that has inspired generations of musicians to learn to play and form their own bands, BC/DC takes pride in separating themselves from “tribute acts claiming to be “North America’s #1 clone’ or ‘just like the real thing.’” On June 15 and 16, Yukoners will have the chance to once again experience the group that has “so successfully branded the Aussie band’s timeless raunch with such epic rock ’n’ roll fury, while also managing to bottle the essence of

a wild frontier lifestyle,” live in concert, as they proclaim in their promotions. BC/DC will be performing two nights at the Jarvis Street Saloon, with support from special guests Leg Up Hands Down as the opening act. BC/DC pays homage to AC/ DC’s entire career, putting its own twist on the rock ’n’ roll that fans know and love. They describe their guitarist as a “maniac,” noting that he occasionally wears an Evel Knievel costume on stage and that they have a lead singer who acts as a hybrid of AC/DC’s two frontmen and goes by the stage name Brian “Bon” Johnscottson. Fans of AC/DC and enthusiasts of rock ’n’ roll history—this band is for you.

BC/DC brings an over-the-top stage energy to a show of high-voltage rock ’n’ roll The past few years have been some of the most tumultuous in AC/DC’s career. It came as something of a shock to fans when drummer Phil Rudd was arrested in 2014 for attempting to procure a

murder and for possession of illegal substances, and sentenced to eight months of house arrest. The band chose to continue without him, recruiting Chris Slade, instead, who had previously replaced Rudd in the 1980s. Since group founder Malcolm Young unfortunately had to step down after being diagnosed with dementia that same year, the band has never been the same and younger brother Angus has been the only remaining original member. To add to the turmoil, in 2016, long-time lead vocalist Brian Johnson was also forced to leave the group due to hearing loss and was replaced by Guns N’ Roses frontman, Axl Rose, for the remainder of the tour that was already underway at this time. The older Young brother tragically passed away last November from complications with his dementia, leaving the rock world to mourn and the future of AC/DC more uncertain than ever.
