ave you ever wondered what a three-year-old boy would want for his birth-

day? Recently, I found myself paralyzed in the toy section of a local store. I don’t have any grandchildren, but I do serve as a “pseudo-grandmother” to many of my younger friends’ children. They range in age from newborn to 12 year olds. I love the opportunity to see what they’re up to and what captures their imagination.

Being a curious 69-year-old, I can’t help but be engaged in their play. While shopping, the stereotypes are hard to let go of—not only for the marketers, but also for me. I noticed that the pastelcoloured aisles were full of pinkand lavender-coloured packaging, geared to traditional girls’ toys. The black-, red- and blue-coloured aisles were mainly reserved for the boys. I wandered back and forth through the aisles; but, on first,

second and third look, didn’t find much that captured my senior imagination. My mind stretched back to our son when he was three. Life was a bit simpler back in the late ’70s. No iPads. And there were limited electronics or fancy toys that don’t leave much to the imagination. Books, puzzles, simple bikes, kites, Lego and homemade playdough were the basics back then. At one stage, I eavesdropped on parents and kids to see what caught their attention. I lurked behind three-year-old-looking kids to see what toys they played with. I feared I might be taken for a grey-haired pervert ready to pounce upon some unsuspecting kid. I was tempted to ask a mother, who was with her preschooler, if she had any suggestions for me. I envied a fellow grandmother/customer who had a cart filled with toys, probably geared more to older grandchildren. I decided to avoid anything resembling a gun—water pistols, military action figures with guns— although I was willing to accept those who, I rationalized, used rifles for subsistence hunting or for protection from wild, scary beasts! I’m not sure what the parents’ position was on guns, but I made that judgment call. I was drawn to action figures placed within specific environments, like a shark tank with ferocious-looking sharks, sea life, a boat and all of the necessary equipment. There was a firerescue scenario and an imaginary dinosaur setting. I wondered if a three-year-old would get engulfed in those worlds. I wandered down the pastel aisle, thinking I should get out of the stereotypes, and checked out the kitchen setting with a stove, fridge and all the equipment. I decided it was beyond my price

range, as was the fortress-building set. Whatever happened to an old blanket draped over some chairs; or, better yet, an appliance cardboard box with a cut-out door and window? I pondered over the batteryoperated train set and a train book to go with it. But then I recalled the train set our son had and how he grew bored with watching it go round and round on the same loop. The train required more tracks and there were no extensions for this train set. I was becoming more frustrated after my wanderings for the last 40 minutes. Then I spied some tool sets—one with a battery-operated saw (no cutting), and another with a drill that made the appropriate sound and movements. Yes! … this was it! The drill with eye goggles, a hammer, pliers and screws! Okay … I know I was falling into the boy-toy stereotype, but what’s a desperate pseudo-grandmother to do? Yes—the packaging was blue, and so was the card I bought. So you’re probably wondering, Was it a hit or not? Not only was it a hit for him, but also for the other three- and four-year-old boys and girls. Even a 30-something-year-old male tested it out! My friend reported that the next morning, the first toy that her son went to play with was the drill and goggles! I feel like a successful grandparent.

Sometimes I can’t think And I can’t write in ink. When my mind is not bright I have nothing to write.

Sometimes I can think for ages And I only have blank pages. When my mind is weak I can’t write for a week.

My ideas I can’t find An’ there’s nothing on my mind. When I’m feeling worse I can’t even write a verse.

When my brain is on pause I can’t even write with my paws. When I can’t think right It’s hard for me to write.

I can think for a long time An’ can’t find words that rhyme. Sometimes I think backwards An’ I can’t find the right words.

But I feel a lot better When I get a Love Letter.

ilary Lorenz is an artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Like a lot of artists she has many projects going on. One of them is the Moth Migration Project, which is an ongoing international project where people worldwide created moths out of paper and send them to her. So far she has had 15,000 submissions from 26 countries. The project is about the environment, pollination, and community. “It bloomed into a meaningful collaboration and a social practice that continues to build,” Lorenz said. This year the project will be showing in St. Andrews, New Brunswick at the Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre from September 28 to October 20, then to Australia to be exhibited at the Bundaberg Regional Gallery in 2019. Nature plays a huge role in her work. An outdoor enthusiast herself, she has been on many hikes such as crossing a lava field in Cameroon, Africa and hiking 14000 feet high Mount Sneffels in Colorado. “All my work originates in nature, with me doing something physical such as hiking, backpacking or trail-running, the first thing is always the inspiration,” Lorenz said. “The mountains and trails ground me and breathe new life into me that can get crushed living in the city.” Lorenz is a multidisciplinary artist with a love for printmaking. “I fell in love with printmaking after taking a class with Professor Steve Campbell at the University of Illinois. I worked night and day in the studio until I had a portfolio to apply to graduate school. “I went to the University of Iowa for printmaking and intermedia. From there I moved to New York City and have been working here ever since.” In addition to making art, she is teaching. Lorenz is a professor of art and media arts at Long Island University in Brooklyn. Her plan for the Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency Program is to do printmaking inspired by trading cards for a project she is calling Trail Magic. For this project she carved linoleum blocks and hand printed numerous hiking items such as

PHOTO: Da Ping Luo headlamps, knives, ropes, sleeping bags along with treasures such as gold nuggets and finisher’s medals. The cards will be sealed in semi-transparent glassine envelopes. Lorenz hopes hikers can take them on a trail to trade for stories, coffee or another small item. She will carry the cards along the Chilkoot Trail to trade and interact with other hikers at the campsites, she said. In addition to that, she wants to collect data in the form of photographs, drawings, watercolour paintings and sound from her residency. “I want to gain understanding of the trail’s historic use by all peoples and respecting that in my work. I feel that every place I travel, I want to channel all the previous explorers. I want to connect, metaphorically, to those who walked the trail and want to understand their drive. I hope to absorb that history and have it later come through in my work back at home,” the artists said.

Elke Reinauer is a writer based in Germany with strong ties to the Yukon. Please email comments about her articles to editor@whatsupyukon.com.

Hilary Lorenz of New York is a self-described multidisciplinary artist who explores intersections of running, nature, and solitude. She will hike the Chilkoot Trail at the end of July

The Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency Program is now in its eighth year. The Yukon Arts Centre, Parks Canada, the United States’ National Park Service and Skagway Arts Council recently announced the three participants for this year: Josh Winkler, from Minnesota, will hike the trail at the end of June; Kristin Link from Alaska will hike the trail mid-July; and Hilary Lorenz from New York will be hiking the trail at the end of July. This series will introduce each artist with a profile.

Let’s get some mud on them trucks! The annual mud bog competition is back on July 21 on Robert Service Way by Danny Macdonald

W

hitehorse gearheads will get their fix with the mud bogs in Whitehorse on July 21, located at the mud bogs course beside the motocross track off of Robert Service Way. The annual competition has been happening for decades and lets Yukoners show off their custom lift trucks and roaring engines with two parts: the “hoods up” portion at 11 a.m, where spectators can check out trucks and meet the drivers; and the races, when the first flag drops at 12 p.m. The event is a family-friendly affair that is the result of a handful of volunteers who put it together each year. Tamara Fischer is one of a group of four main organizers who get things set year-round. They are joined by a group of 15 to 20 more, during the day of the event, to keep things going smoothly. According to Fischer, the competition has stayed the same for the past few years, with different categories and standard rules to the contest. “You can compete if you have a driver’s licence,” Fischer said. “So [we have competitors] as young as that and then into their 50s and 60s. “We have three different tire classes—33 inches and under, 34 to 37 inches, and 38 inches and up.” The competition itself takes place in a mud pit that stretches the length of the mud-bogging area. Two trucks are paired in

each heat and race to get through the pit. Ten stakes are lined down the middle of the course and each racer gets a score out of 10, based on where they make it. “It’s a race, a points race,” Fischer explained. “They line up and the flag drops. The first one out of the pit gets the full ten points. Flag girls count the score.” The second truck is given a score that coincides with the peg they were at when the first truck exits the pit. Each truck competes in three heats and the winners of the first rounds are matched up in the second rounds. They keep going until everyone has a chance to go three times. While attendance can change, depending on the weather, the event always draws a substantial crowd. “[The crowd has] been as low as one-thousand and as many as three-thousand,” Fischer said. “It’s weather-dependent and weekend-dependent. “We have chosen to run on the Dawson City Music Festival weekend. Last year was a trial run, but it’s working out.” The organizers have also aimed to make the event a family-friendly experience. They’ve created a kids’ area with activities for children. In the past, the area has had distractions, such as face painting, a bean bag toss, a sandbox with toy trucks and cars, and colouring books. Similar options will be organized again, according to Fischer, as well as a possible ap-

pearance of a new feature, a mini mud pit. It’s not yet confirmed, but Fischer has been trying to make it happen, so stay tuned. They also have a concession, run by the group, which will feature smokies from the hot dog stand from Main St. and Third Ave, pizza from Pizza 73, and other snacks. They also have a fully manned first aid station to respond to any injuries. The three main mud bog groups are based in Whitehorse, Dawson and Inuvik, according to Fischer. Drivers are recruited mostly from the Whitehorse area, but sometimes there are guest drivers. “Generally speaking, the Whitehorse guys get ready for here and Dawson, the Dawson guys do Dawson, and we’ve yet to see the Inuvik guys, but all three groups are welcome,” she said. “We’ve also seen guys from Teslin and Watson Lake. And four years ago, we had trucks from Alberta.” And while she uses “guys” to describe the drivers, it’s not only men getting into these trucks. There are a couple of lady drivers who compete, and one of them won the 2017 Crowd’s Choice award, according to Fischer. There are no real limits on who can enter, the only requirement being that the driver holds a valid driver’s licence. “If you think your truck can do it, and have your driver’s licence, you can try,” Fischer said with a laugh. “We have two new drivers this year,

You sure look thirsty... try some lemonade!

The Big Squeeze Lemonade Stand Competition/Fundraiser is August 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by Angela Krueger

F

or some of us, summer reminds us of the days that were filled with outdoor activities and hanging out with friends, but there were always a few entrepreneurial folks who saw summer as an opportunity to make some pocket change by cutting lawns for neighbours, pet sitting for friends on vacation and, of course, the ever-popular lemonade stand. As Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon (BBBSY) turns 40 this year, the agency was looking for a creative and family friendly way to raise funds for our community mentoring program, while also promoting what BBBSY does. The Big Squeeze is a lemonadestand competition that started in Prince George, in 2013, as a “just for fun” event that allowed local businesses to tap into their inner child and sell some lemonade. It became a big fundraiser for the agency and BBBSY thought this community-minded event would be a perfect fit for Whitehorse. Here’s how it works: Businesses, organizations and families who would like to have a lemonade stand contact BBBSY to register. Lemonade is made by the team who registered, and Save On Foods provides the lemons, which will be brought to the hosting stands along with a couple of pitchers, a few days before the event. BBBSY will advertise all of the lemonadestand locations, and teams are encouraged to make their best lemonade recipe (non-alcoholic, of course!). Bake sales and BBQs are encouraged, and the funds raised will be added to the team’s total. Each team sells their lemonade (by donation) to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon, and the team with the most funds raised will be recognized.

Angela Krueger promoting The Big Squeeze on Canada Day at Lumel Studios Dave’s Trophy has donated The Big Squeeze trophy for the best-tasting lemonade, which will be given to the winning team (along with bragging rights), for the year, until the next Big Squeeze. The Big Squeeze Lemonade Stand Competition will be held Wednesday, August 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you would like to have a lemonade stand for the 2018 Big Squeeze Lemonade Stand Competition, contact Angela at 668-7911 or

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Oland

Hot dog fried rice

H

ot dogs are the perfect food, and this is a good way to incorporate more of a perfect food into your diet. If you happen to have a container of leftover steamed rice from your last Chinese takeout binge, this is a great way to bring a bit of life back into those three-day-old crusty grains. If not, make sure to let the rice cool as much as possible before you fry it. The rice will stick and clump if you try to fry it when it’s too hot. Serves 2 INGREDIENTS 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil 6 hot dogs, sliced 3 green onions, finely sliced ¼ cup cilantro, chopped with leaves and stems divided 2 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. vegetable oil (divided) 1 tbsp. ginger, grated 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 cups (ish) of cold leftover rice 1 ½ cups frozen peas 3 tbsp. soy sauce Salt, to taste PHOTOS: Sydney Oland

Hot dog fried rice ... cont’d METHOD

Hot dogs and aromatics

1

Heat sesame oil in a cast-iron skillet over mediumhigh heat, and when shimmering add the hot dogs, half of the green onion and half of the cilantro (the half with mostly stems). Cook, stirring often, until the hot dogs begin to brown (about 3 minutes).

2

Add two tbsp. vegetable oil, ginger and garlic, then cook until fragrant. Add rice and frozen peas and cook, stirring constantly for 4 minutes or until all the ingredients are fully incorporated and the rice begins to look toasted. Add soy sauce and toss until coated, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from heat, but keep warm.

3

Place a non-stick skillet over high heat and add remaining vegetable oil. When shimmering, break eggs into the pan and cook until whites are set but yolks are still runny.

4

Divide fried rice between 4 bowls, top each bowl with a fried egg, then with remaining chopped green onion and cilantro. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and hot sauce and serve.

Top with anchovies

RV Hotspots Part three of six

by Doug Sack It required a great deal of thought about a large number of camping and work trips between 1971 and 2018 to trim this wild turkey down to the following menu: ALASKA West coast of Kenai Peninsula and Dyea tidal flats N.W.T. The Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk via Dempster Highway NORTHERN B.C. Atlin YUKON Kluane Park: Slim’s River, Sheep Mountain and the Donjek Top of the World: an oasis of scenery, serenity and solitude Southern Lakes: including Yukon’s newest campground (Conrad) on the Windy Arm of Tagish Lake

KATHLEEN & KOKANEE IN KLUANE: “Don’t confuse Kluane National Park with a quick visit to Camp ’n’ Scamp.”

A

ll Yukon RV campgrounds were not created equal. The territorial government operates and services 42 campgrounds from Watson Lake to Rock River on the Dempster, and Snag Junction on the Alcan, but the Feds (Parks Canada) have

just one, Kathleen Lake, which is the only place in Kluane National Park you can sleep (legally) if you have rubber wheels for your mode of transportation (rather than flying machines, skis, hiking boots or birchbark). It’s also the only public campground in the Yukon that charges $15.70 per night instead of $12, and the only one that makes Yukon seniors (65+) cough up to shack up, a federal oversight that must be corrected in the near future, before it’s too late. We are also a bit snake-eyed about the syrupy published tale of how Kathleen Lake was named, supposedly by a homesick and lovesick Scottish-born Mountie working on the Dalton Trail from 1900–02. Since Kathleen is the anglicized version of the Irish name Caitlyn and means “pure,” it is far more likely the lake was named for the purity of the alpine water rather than by a lovelorn Scottish lawman who missed his Irish girlfriend during the years right after the Klondike Gold Rush. But who knows with Yukon place names? Maybe it’s true. One thing is undeniably factual: You can find it by driving 27 kilometres (17 miles) up the Haines Road from Haines Junction, uphill all the way in a series of steps, then more uphill travel into the park, lake and campground, which is also elevated and able to pick up cell signals (but only in the first four to six campsites on the high

point of the 39-site campground) near the sign-in kiosk. That is a true rarity in the Kluane Country, which has great service in the Junction and good reception in all three directions out of town for about 25 kilometres before you reenter the twilight zone in all directions except Kathleen’s. Even Congdon Creek, a great lakeside campground between Slims River and Destruction Bay, is silent at the point where the park boundary goes due west while the Alcan continues on northwest to Alaska, up the Shakwak Trench. Being able to communicate with the rest of the world from the very top of the Kathleen Lake Campground is just a flukey perk of altitude from the Yukon’s most unusual campground. For a roving travel writer, however, who values communicating with others from far and distant places, it was a pleasant surprise that allowed some serious research to be done on kokanee (silver) salmon, which has always been one of the main reasons to go to Kathleen Lake, where the whole story is told on many signboards in the day-use and parking areas. Kokanee, of course, are near-mythical Canadian game fish that began as landlocked sockeye salmon that got cut off from the ocean by one thing or another. They somehow learned how to survive their entire lives in freshwater. The Kathleen Lake kokanee, as the signs explain, were blocked by Lowell Glacier, while spawning sometime in the 1700s, and became trapped in the Kathleen Lake watershed. Rather than returning to the ocean for three to five years and becoming large, those sockeyes that became kokanees were known as “dwarf salmon” because they were smaller than many trout, 12–15 inches and one pound, and had to learn how and where to spawn so that the trout didn’t eat all their fingerlings. It was a survival story of epic proportions and the biggest reason to visit Kathleen Lake, which

The Kathleen Lake Campground has a day use area with spectacular views was always better known for the fishing than the King’s Throne, the dramatic alpine cirque overlooking the lake, and a popular hiking terminus. It was even renowned as the “home of the kokanee,” a slight exaggeration but not inaccurate. Deeper research has shown that kokanee salmon (long considered an oddball fish from mountainous Canada) can be found all over North America and the world. In fact, there are operative theories out there now that kokanees have evolved into a different species than their ancient sockeye ancestors, a process called speciation. While there seems little doubt the Kathleen kokanees were cut off by a galloping glacier, fairly recent parallel studies in Russia and Japan (himemasu no sake) have determined that the little hard-luck kokanees have been around at least 15,000 years in large worldwide numbers after becoming trapped in lakes during the melting of the last Ice Age. In today’s Yukon, according to cumulative annual fishing surveys conducted by the government, the three most popular game fish in the territory are 1) rainbow trout 2) Arctic char and 3) kokanee salmon. That’s a pretty good tribute to a forgotten little fish, which was dealt a busted flush by Mother Nature, yet survived to reach the top of the popularity list. They are even stocked in “pothole” lakes, which have no exit streams, and do well in them somehow. They are, indeed, survivors. There is a half-kilometre boardwalk constructed over a marsh alongside Kathleen Lake, called the Kokanee Trail, which is wheelchair-friendly to provide access for everybody. Kathleen Lake is the perfect destination for your first overnight in Kluane Country and your only opportunity to camp inside the park itself. There are other great

territorial campgrounds nearby, such as Pine Lake, just five kilometres outside of the Junction; and Congdon Creek, close to Destruction Bay—but Kathleen is the key to feeling the spirit of Kluane, which, ironically, means “lake of big fishes.” We would recommend at least a week to travel from Whitehorse or Haines, Alaska, to Beaver Creek or Tok. Kusawa Lake, which resembles an inland fjord, is another great place to stop and camp in the Kluane region, as are Otter Falls, Dezadeash, Burwash Landing (hot museum), Donjek, Pickhandle Lake, Snag Junction and Beaver Creek. Don’t confuse Kluane National Park with a quick visit to Camp ’n’ Scamp. It’s a huge beautiful area best enjoyed at a slow, relaxed pace. You can resume your hectic pace and lifestyle when you get south or west of the Yukon borders. And, if you have a hankering to lay an eyeball on Canada’s biggest mountain (Mount Logan), Icefield Discovery is located on the south end of the lake with their ski plane waiting to fly you up and over the largest non-polar glacier field in the world. They’ll even rent you a cabin up there somewhere if you want to wake up higher than you ever have. Next time, in Part four of “Grandpa’s favourite RV Hotspots,” we’ll introduce you to the Yukon’s newest RV campground, Conrad, as we explore the headwater lakes and the Yukon River.

Explore the science behind the Yukon’s earthquakes

NRCan (Natural Resources Canada) Seismic Station located in St. Elias Mountains, southwest Yukon. “The denser array of seismometer is not only useful to monitor and locate earthquakes in the YukonAlaska region, it also allows geoscientists to better image the interior of the planet as seismic waves act similarly as XRays in a medical CT Scan image… So the full benefits go well beyond the bounds of Yukon… This is really part of a planetary scale research experiment aiming to better understand the planet we live on.” Maurice Colpron, Head of Bedrock Geology at the Yukon Geological Survey PHOTOS: Michael Schmidt

by Michael Bramadat-Willcock

“... earthquakes are kind of the heartbeat of the planet … so if she’s shaking, the planet is doing fine.” ... Maurice Colpron, Yukon Geological Survey

O

n Monday May 1, 2017, at around 5:30 a.m., a magnitude 6.2 earthquake landed near the B.C.–Yukon border, followed by another slightly stronger one at around 7:30 a.m. The rare event got a lot more people talking about seismic activity in the region, and a few murmured their fears of an eventual “big one.” While this train of thought is understandable (if a bit pessimistic) in places like Vancouver Island and California (seen as overdue for some major quakes), the Yukon’s situation isn’t quite the same. Maurice Colpron, head of Bedrock Geology at the Yukon Geological Survey, is a leading expert on the geology of the northern Cordilleran mountain belt. He said that May 1, 2017, was a unique event and broke down how earthquakes affect the Yukon.

“I do recommend that we all be prepared to be self-sufficient for seventy-two hours, in case of emergency, but I’m not talking about houses falling down or anything like that,” said Colpron. He said that damage to infrastructure, causing power outages and road blocks, is more of a concern.

Hotspots for seismic activity in the Yukon Seismic or earthquake activity in the Yukon occurs primarily in southwest Yukon, from the Denali fault to the Gulf of Alaska. The largest-magnitude quakes mostly occur there, including those from May 1, 2017. “Yukon earthquakes are predominantly shallow, generally low-magnitude strike-slip earthquakes,” said Colpron. He said

that these larger quakes occurred mostly along strike-slip faults that are linked to the plate boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. Yukon communities that are most at risk of earthquake hazards are those closest to what Colpron describes as the “hotspot of activity” in southwest Yukon, and particularly those located near the Denali fault—Haines Junction, Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay are closest to the fault. Beaver Creek is also relatively close to the Denali fault. “The Denali fault system experiences multiple low-magnitude events every year,” Colpron said. “Although the Alaska portion of the Denali has experienced more and larger events than its Yukon portion, we can’t preclude the possibility of large events in Yukon. Infrastructure closest to

epicentre [is] most likely to be damaged by ground motion.” The potential destructive forces or ground motions of an earthquake decrease rapidly away from epicentre. Even though, Colpron points out, “we might experience a good shaking,” as was the case on May 1, 2017. “Of course, the main infrastructure that could be affected by earthquakes are roads following the Denali fault corridor in western Yukon—the Alaska Highway and the Haines Road.” The actual plate boundary is located along the FairweatherContact faults in this region (extension of the Queen Charlotte fault to the south). tivity generates earthquakes, particularly near plate boundaries.” Colpron said that, in a way, this constant reshaping and the close interactions between plates (the lithosphere to geologists) and the atmosphere and ocean can metaphorically suggest that the “planet is alive …” and, he said, “... in this sense, earthquakes are kind of the heartbeat of the planet … so if she’s shaking, the planet is doing fine.”

Shaky FAQs Yukon Geological Survey Seismic Station located in southeast Yukon. “YGS owns and operates 5 instruments at this time, all contributing to the current network under the US Array umbrella. A number of options are being considered at this time, but the hope is that Yukon will be left with a larger number of seismometer installations beyond the end of US Array project in 2020. Discussions involve geoscientists from the Geological Survey of Canada, YGS and the NWT Geological Survey, and Canadian and US university researchers.” Maurice Colpron, Head of Bedrock Geology at the Yukon Geological Survey son and Mackenzie mountains, in central Yukon, are not as well understood. “Current thoughts are that they are far-field effects of collision of the Yakutat terrane in the corner of the Gulf of Alaska,” said Colpron. The Yakutat terrane is a piece of crust carried along the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather fault system that Colpron said is being “stuffed” underneath the St. Elias Mountains, explaining their rapid rise and extreme elevation. “The current hypothesis is that much of Yukon is gliding slowly to the northeast along deep faults that come to surface in the Richardson–Mackenzie mountains, 600–700 kilometres away from the ‘collision’ of these tectonic plates.”

Pulse of the planet While many find earthquakes and the accompanying ground tremors scary, not to mention the occasional disruption of human activity and infrastructure, Colpron sees them as mostly a good thing. “We live on a dynamic planet. The tectonic plates are constantly in motion—new ocean floor is being created at mid-ocean ridges and consumed at subduction zones where it returns into the mantle,” he said. He pointed out that these movements are healthy and normal functions of the Earth’s natural rhythm. “The Earth is constantly reshaping itself as the tectonic plates grind past each other or bump into each other, and this ac-

It’s always good to know where you stand, and the same can be said for earthquake preparedness strategies. Colpron explains that the Yukon is located in the mountainous northern Cordillera region, which was developed along the western edge of the North American continent, near its boundary with the Pacific Ocean (or tectonic plate). “Earthquakes occur mainly along tectonic plate boundaries. They are a fact of living in western Canada. That being said, most earthquakes are generally of low magnitude, and only a few are usually detected by people.” Although southwest Yukon is along the plate boundary, Colpron said the region has historically experienced fewer numbers of quakes and generally of lesser magnitude than Alaska. “The chance of a large earthquake near Whitehorse, where most of us live, is very low. We only have one small event of M2.6 recorded within thirty kilometres of the city in the past fifty years.” Colpron wanted to clarify that, while we can always guess, scientists cannot predict earthquakes and that claims to the contrary should be taken with a grain of salt. “We can only study past

Let him hear the sound of music, not the sound of hospital monitors.

A historical record from 1899 to 2017 shows that earthquakes occur mostly in the south-west Yukon in the St. Elias Mtns and along the Denali fault, with some activity in the Mackenzie and Richardson Mountain in the north and east events and essentially guess that future events may resemble the past …” He gave an example: “We know from studies on Vancouver Island that the Cascadia Subduction Zone experienced a major quake every 300–500 years, with the last major event on January 26, 1700. “So it’s fair to say that the Vancouver–Pacific Northwest region is probably due for another ‘big one,’ but who’s to say when it will occur … could be in 200 yrs? or tomorrow? Not much of a prediction really …” Fore those of you yearning for more, an earthquake awareness campaign takes place every year on October 18 at 10:18 a.m. (www.shakeout.org/yukon/). preparations for emergencies, such as earthquakes, are the same as any other emergencies, such as wild fires or floods,” said Colpron. “The basic rule—you should be ready for self-subsistence for at least 72 hours …” Yukon government provides information and guidelines for emergency preparedness at PreparedYukon.ca.

urora is a Canadian company that produces and distributes medical marijuana and prides itself on acting ethically while providing patients with good-quality, affordable product. This summer, Aurora is putting on a national series of free concerts to celebrate cannabis culture and the imminent legalization of marijuana through music and arts. The concert series boasts a host of over 20 well-known acts, old and new, including The Cult, Kings of Leon, Phantogram, Arkells, Thrice, City and Colour, and

Post Malone. One of the series events will be taking place at the Yukon Arts Centre, in Whitehorse, and will feature Sam Roberts Band with local talent Speed Control as an opening act. With six Juno awards to their name, Sam Roberts and his Montréal-formed band are currently riding a wave of success off of their sixth studio album, 2016’s Terraform. For Roberts, himself, the album contains personal meaning that can apply to almost any listener as well. “Terraforming is the idea of

going to another planet and making it viable for humans,” said Roberts in a press release for the album. “For this record, I saw it. “I saw it as planting the seeds for that same sort of renewal in your own life—that regardless of how much you have broken the parts of your life, along the way, there is always a chance to start over… for yourself and the people you care about. Most of these songs are love songs but love songs that grapple with its many faces— beautiful and ugly, healing and destructive.” Having achieved recognition all around Canada and outside, Whitehorse seems a place the Sam Roberts Band would have had to eventually grace. The Aurora Illumination Series provides them with the opportunity to do so. Sam Roberts Band has taken part in other sponsored shows before, where they have celebrated Canadian Hockey Culture, performed for university students and even helped raise funds to combat Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). For the openers, Speed Control, the offer to share a stage with Sam Roberts Band was one that couldn’t be declined. “It’s a pretty amazing opportunity, especially in a hometown setting,” said Jody Peters, who plays bass and sings for the trio. “We don’t play in Whitehorse a lot, simply because we’re on the road. “Having a chance to play here, with a killer rock band, in an awesome venue, is a chance we’re not gonna pass up!” It has been debated among artists and fans whether or not people

Sam Roberts Band will perform July 25 at the Yukon Arts Centre with influence have a responsibility or duty to use that influence to spread messages while becoming role models for fans. Especially young musicians, is not always something musicians necessarily sign up for, it is a weight that is put onto their shoulders. The Aurora Illumination Series capitalizes on the idea of artists using their influence for a cause, as with the legalization of marijuana, in Canada, on its way. It is important for people to have an understanding of what the drug does, and a medical producer like Aurora has a duty to increase knowledge and understanding among its patients and the public. While the Aurora Illumination Series is intended to be a celebration, it can also be more than that, stepping up to the plate to provide an educational opportunity.

The shows in the series are free—but this means those who wish to attend must enter a draw to win their tickets. The chances of winning depend entirely on the number of entries. The Sam Roberts Band and Speed Control show in Whitehorse will be held July 25 at the Yukon Arts Centre, with doors opening at 7 p.m. For a chance to win tickets, enter the draw on www.illuminationseries. ca and visit the site for more information. All shows in the Aurora Illumination Series are for people 19 years of age or older only.
