he Palace Grand was rebuilt in 1962,” said superintendent Travis Weber of Klondike National Historic Sites (KNHS). That made the systems in the building 55 years old by 2016, when the current renovation project began its two-year run, and it was time to replace many of them, as well as do some work on the foundation. When “Arizona” Charlie Meadows built his Palace Grand Theatre, in 1899, it probably never occurred to him that some version of the place would still exist in 2018. The 1962 rebuild was inspired by Stratford, Ontario, guru Tom Patterson, to be the base for a northern annual theatre festival, and was launched with a moneylosing run of Foxy (a Klondike remodelled version of Ben Jonson’s Volpone). Once reality set in, it became the home of the less ambitious Gaslight Follies—a mixture of vaudeville and melodrama. The

show was never a big money-maker, but it was worth running as long as the tour bus crowd booked tickets as part of their cruise ship program. It ended in 2003 and the building was seriously underused except for tours and some KNHS programming until 2013. The ambitious “Live at the Palace Grand” show in 2013 and 2014 was financed by federal CanNor dollars as part of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in’s economic development plan, an attempt to reboot summer programming. It ran for two seasons, with both local and imported programming. The Friends of the Palace Grand organization spun off of the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (KIAC) and took on the task of devising a new plan during the years that KNHS had the building shut down for repairs. “Heating systems and electrical systems were in need of repairs, so that was a big piece of the work,” Weber said, “as well as air conditioning and a fire-suppression system.”

PHOTO: Dan Davidson He added that most of the work is inside the walls, though there are some things visible to the casual eye. There is new work in the foyer; the stage has new backdrops and equipment; and the sound system has been improved. “We’re excited that it’s being used again by the community,” he said, listing a few of the events that had already been booked: the Klondike Placer Miners’ Association dinner, the Robert Service School commencement exercises and social evening. KIAC brought in a concert by Petunia and the Vipers, and here was an evening of public readings and music during the Dawson Daily News Print & Publishing Festival in late May and early June. Subsequent to this interview, the Friends group put on four performances of their new program, “Cabin of Curiosities.” Just the week this is being written, the Klondike Visitors Association and KNHS sponsored a live showing of the CTV television program, The Amazing Race Canada, which was cont’d on page 3 ...

filmed here in the late spring and had also used the Palace Grand as a venue in the show. By the time this sees print, the Dawson City Music Festival will have staged their festival preshow with Madame Gandhi (live in concert with the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers & DASH) and used the Palace Grand as one of its venues between July 20 and 22. All during the summer, KNHS does daily tours of this impressive building, and Sunday to Thursday it stages its own Greatest Klondiker Contest, with staff taking on the personas of Gold Rush characters and vying for audience approval. The Palace Grand project will have cost just about over $6 million when it is totally completed. There’s still some replacement of wallpaper to be done, and a Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) evaluation proved the that aboveground oil tanks had created some contaminated ground that would need to be mitigated, but none of that will affect the summer usage. “All of these investments [across Canada], including the ones in Dawson City, are helping to maintain these buildings,” Weber said. “They’re also helping with tourism and local initiatives.” After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

t’s a story many times told but never gets old, this tale of Kate and Otto Partridge of Ben-MyChree, which is Manx for “Girl of my Heart” and is the greatest love story in the history of the Yukon. It’s simply a mad irony that most of it took place in northwestern B.C. at the very southern end of Tagish Lake after it makes a hard western turn and ends in a culde-sac against a wall of glacial mountains near the Alaska border. Fanny Kate Pridham was born in 1854 at Carmarthenshire, Wales. Otto H. Partridge was born on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea in 1857. They were first cousins and knew each other since childhood, finally marrying in 1880 when she was 26 and he was 23. Neither ever looked at another. They grew up thinking they would spend their lives together; and so they did until Otto died suddenly on June 28, 1930, the year of their golden 50th wedding anniversary, and Kate followed on January 10, 1931. They are buried side by side in Whitehorse’s Pioneer Cemetery. By the time of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897 when Otto was 40 and Kate 43, they had been living in Wales where Otto progressed from a young apprentice to a master shipbuilder in a place worldrenowned for the quality of seagoing vessels produced there, and Kate was well known for her green thumb which produced all of their vegetables and flowers including many for sale to supplement the family income. As soon as they heard the stories about ships loaded with gold arriving in Seattle from a place called “The Klondike,” Otto set off alone in 1897 to climb the Chilkoot and Kate joined him in 1898 after carrying a portable organ over the pass. Their first residence was a homemade houseboat anchored in Milhaven Bay on Lake Bennett where Otto set up his first sawmill. Even before Kate joined him, Otto found himself with four sources of income: 1. Showing the

The Yukon’s greatest love story ... cont’d Kate also entertained in the drawing room on organ and harmonium, and Otto was a natural-born storyteller who loved to tell tales about the Klondike Gold Rush. By the time they entered the tourist business full-time, Kate was 62 and Otto 59 and they entertained upwards of 9,000 wealthy tourists every season until 1930, with the most famous names in their guest books being Teddy Roosevelt, Lord and Lady Byng and scores of Roaring Twenties celebrities including writers and movie stars. It was not a poor man’s holiday to go sightseeing in the Yukon. In 1930, after Kate had been widowed in mid-summer, the prominent writer Frederick Niven immortalized her forever with a cover story in Canadian Home Jour-

nal, including the quote above. Niven was totally flabbergasted by this widow in the wilderness, and his article was the first step in turning the Partridge family story into a mythical northern love affair that was plugged every year as the White Pass bought Ben-MyChree and continued the tours until 1956 when lake and river travel ceased due to road construction during and after WWII.

Kate Partridge planted two acres with over 40 kinds of flowers and shrubs and Ben-My-Chree looked like an improbable farm located in a wilderness valley 106 miles from Carcross

The “Girl of My Heart” is one of the most well-known and oftrepeated northern tales in Yukon history and is only published here as a reminder to modern Yukoners of how the oldtimers used to age in the North before the onset of Dementia Roadmaps, Grief symposiums, old-age newsletters and “deluxe” care facilities that resembled mental hospitals. And if you dare doubt the veracity of this epic love story, pray tell us who is in second place on this unique Yukon love list? Klondike Kate? Doug Sack, 71, is the former editor of Sourdough Chronicle, the quadannual newsletter of the Yukon Council on Aging, YCOAYukon.com. Before that, he was young.

they lived down on their homestead in the valley, also called Ben-My-Chree, but that was the end of their mining aspirations. After the tragedy, they increased the size of their gardens. Kate planted two acres with over 40 kinds of flowers and shrubs that flourished in the glacial till during the long 17-hour days. It was reported that Kate’s delphiniums grew to ten feet and her pansies and poppies were 5” in diameter.

Otto also increased the vegetable acreage until aerial photos made Ben-My-Chree look like an improbable farm located in a wilderness valley 106 miles from the nearest civilization, which was Carcross. By 1912, White Pass ships were detouring to the end of the lake to drop off mail and pick up fresh vegetables on their way to the “Switzerland of the North,” which was Atlin. Word quickly spread about the beauty and aesthetics of the Partridge gardens and Otto signed an agreement with White Pass in 1916, in the depth of WWI, to host tourist excursions, from Carcross, that featured Kate dressed like a lady in the wilderness and Otto in formal attire.

osquitoes, black flies, mites and just about every other insect alive are out there waiting for you. There are countless insect sprays, also out there for the customer to buy, that contain chemicals that can harm the skin or even worse. Before buying any spray, carefully read the contents and then research the chemicals to see how they could harm you. Lisa and I are adventurous sea kayakers. We venture into swamps and bogs that most others would bypass. Of course, such waterways are infiltrated with insects that most people have never seen. Around our country home, back in Ontario, we planted hundreds of marigolds and were “free” from the bug world (as apparently insects hate the scent of marigolds). Since coming to the Yukon and dealing with the Whitehorse Feed Store for dog and bird feed, we discovered a spray, specifically for horses, that is 100 per cent marigold juice. We began to wipe this

marigold juice all over our dog, and she was free of flying insects. We also discovered that when having

this juice on our hands, we, too, were free from the annoying, biting insects. You can wipe this right over your face, with no harmful results, as it does not have any added chemicals. Actually, the Feed Store is the only place we’ve found in the Yukon that has marigold juice spray. It is operated by a plunger, so there is no need for extra chemicals to be hidden in the container. The marigold has a beautiful aroma, and this was one of the first flowers we planted around our back yard this spring, especially bordering our deck. When kayaking, we actually spray some of the juice on the kayaks, and we remain free of these pesky bugs while others are swatting away. Some other sprays on the market do have harmful chemicals, so caution should be taken when using these questionable sprays on children. a kitchen. Over the past couple months I’ve stumbled across a couple of really great hacks that make creating awesome meals while camping way easier. And

here they are, in no particular order.

1 Download our app from the Google or Apple store, create an account and place your order in advance!

eveloping recipes for a campsite is a different beast than developing recipes for

Beaten eggs in a bag This is especially for people who like scrambles or omelettes. Pre-beat a dozen or so eggs and season with salt and pepper, then pour out however many you’re planning on eating that day. Don’t have to worry about egg breakage, but make sure to double bag in case of a leak.

2 Spice blends (sweet and savory)

Generally I’ll bring two simple blends, one for sprinkling on meat and veggies, and one for fruit and yogurt. For savory, it’s generally a blend of salt, pepper, granulated onion and garlic, and some paprika. For sweet, it’s a classic brown sugar and cinnamon … but the real power play of bringing your own spice blends is to mix both of them together and use on grilled meat. Game changer.

fter testing the waters in 2017 with the first-ever Yukon Star Party, the Yukon branch of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) is bringing back the event, with promises of education, fun and most of all, community engagement. Last year’s Yukon Star Party ran over the course of a week, which meant many people were unable to make it to all the events. This year, to ensure all those who wish to attend are able to, the 2018 edition of the Yukon Star Party will take place on only one week-

end, from Friday, August 24 to Saturday, August 25. Additionally, the Star Party being in the summer this time around will mean warmer weather for a better turnout. Last year’s events during October put some people off attending due to the cold weather and the fact that so much of the time is spent outside. The two days contain a packed program that includes astronomy presentations, a workshop in telescope use, live music, a silent auction, barbecues, and programming for kids.

“We want to engage with the community as much as possible,” said Vikki Zsohar, president of the Yukon Astronomical Society (YAS). “That was how we focused this year.” With emphasis on this, the programming of the 2nd Annual Yukon Star Party has been specially made up to offer opportunities for attendees to participate and really be part of everything that’s happening. Each event is very community-based, and the public is encouraged to partake in everything from the stargazing to the

telescope workshop. The first day of the Yukon Star Party will begin at 5 p.m. with the start of the silent auction. The auction will feature astronomyrelated works of art by artist Heather Von Steinhagen. At 6 p.m. there will be an opening ceremony for Whitehorse’s new observatory, which was made possible with help from the Yukon Government’s Community Development funds. Zsohar said the opening of the observatory is one of the most important events of the weekend, and it is hoped that before win-

ter starts, it will be in use by the public. From 7:30 p.m. until midnight on the Friday, people who attend will be able to use the observatory’s telescope to observe stars, planets and galaxies. A packed Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. with some kids programming, including events like a kids’ astro lab, face painting, a solar system run and some observation of the sun with a telescope. At noon, another barbecue will start, this one with live music to watch and listen to. The first presentation of the day will be happening at 4 p.m. and will be a presentation on light pollution by YAS’ Forest Pearson. According to Zsohar, light pollucont’d on page 13 ...

Dancing with the stars ... cont’d tion is an important topic needing to be looked into right now. “As population in Whitehorse increases, we are kind of losing the night sky,” she said. “We want to show our children and grandchildren that there is a still a night sky, and if we don’t take steps now to stop [light] pollution we might lose it forever.” After this presentation, the feature presentation of the weekend will take place. University of British Columbia planetary scientist Dr. Christa Van Laerhoven will be delivering her presentation, titled: “‘Oumuamua, the First Known Interstellar Asteroid.” ‘Oumuamua is the first-ever discovered asteroid that came from another galaxy but can be seen from Earth.

“There is some novelty in ‘Oumuamua being the first-known interstellar object,” said Van Laerhoven. “There must have been others previously, but we are now at the point where our telescopes are observing large swaths of the sky, doing it often, and going faint enough to actually witness the passage of things like ‘Oumuamua.” Van Laerhoven will have enough exciting information on the topic of ‘Oumuamua to satisfy science buffs, but reveals that, unfortunately, no aliens are involved. After her presentation will be the Telescoping 101 workshop, for which people are invited and encouraged to bring their own telescopes to learn how to fully work them.

More observation through the observatory’s telescope will be going on from 8 p.m. until midnight, and the silent auction will end at 9 p.m. Anyone interested in astronomy or looking for an opportunity to learn something new are welcome at all events of the 2nd annual Yukon Star Party. The 2018 Métis Spring Festival and Métis Talent Show was held in St. Albert from May 18 to 20

For the Midnight Sun...

by Dennis Allen

s I was growing up in northern Canada, music was as much a staple as frying pan bannock. The rough-and-tumble stories of country and western music was social commentary to our all-too-often tumultuous lives. It was a cathartic experience to hear Loretta Lynn sing about poverty, or Merle Haggard sing about the loneliness of prison. Somehow it validated our existence. Everyone I knew could sing at least one Hank Williams song, word for word, or at least squawk out “Maiden’s Prayer” on the fiddle. So when I got wind of the Métis Talent Show in St. Albert, a couple of weeks ago, I wasted no time in finding the address. I got there about 7:30 p.m. and caught the last of the youth category. A little girl, who couldn’t have weighed any more than the guitar around her neck, growled through a whiskey-soaked George Jones classic. She was as saucy as a thirty-nine-and-a-half-yearold divorcee waitin’ on alimony, again. The crowd ate her up like a bowl of duck soup. Next up were the guys, and it was one tear-jerkin’ hit after another. A big barrel-chested Métis with a perfect mullet crooned through Merle Haggard’s classic country tear jerker, “Wake Up,” a lover’s plea for his wife to wake from the coffin and hold him one more time. So convincing, he was, that we all sat on the edges of our seats and secretly begged for her to wake. The MC was bang on, cracking jokes like they were cheap. My

Play all day and all night too! Enjoy your private Yukon cabin.

World champion fiddler Calvin Vollrath, pictured at the Alberta Smithsonian Festival, did the fiddle breaks for the men’s talent show winner favourite: him and the wife were sitting in church last Sunday when he whispered to her, “Gee honey, I gotta cut a ‘silent one.’” She hollered into his good ear, “Change the battery in your hearing aid!” I almost fell off my chair from laughter. One thing about being Indian ... if you can’t laugh at yourself, we’ll do it for you. Then the girls got up and went toe to toe with the guys in talent. From a great torch singer, doing Etta James, right down to the sweat on her brow, to a pregnant mom doing the Johnny Cash/June Carter classic, “Jackson,” pointing her finger, swaggering across the stage with mic in hand and making us guys feel guilty for being men. My favourite was a woman who sang Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience.” She was playing alone cause the band didn’t know the song. The guitar strap was too long and she was having trouble playing the chords; halfway through, she stopped and hung her head in what you could only guess was shame. “You can do it,” someone one yelled out. One by one we hollered encouragement to her. Call it an “act of God” or simple fate, but the guitar player began to play the song. She slung the guitar back over her shoulder like a faded rock star and gripped the mic with both hands, and begged someone, anyone, for just a little … patience.

PELVIC HEALTH WORKSHOPS SERIES

The crowd went bananas. It was a god-damned spiritual experience. The night was getting on but I figured I paid seven bucks and I was gonna stick it out till the end. The best was yet to come, cause next up was the Elders. The crowd favourite was “Métis Rose,” who, if I’m not mistaken, is in her early eighties. And she brought along her husband, an 88-year-old Elvis impersonator. And you know what she sang? “All Shook Up—in Cree! He was gyrating and grinding what he had left into her, and she was taking it all. We could not help but stand and give them the ovation they deserved. And the winner of the men’s talent show was the dad of that saucy little girl. And he sang “Wagon Wheel,” to a T, with Calvin Vollrath, world champion fiddler, doing the fiddle breaks, and it was the “second coming of Christ” in three verses. Till my dying day, I will retell this story over and over again because it had that great of an impact on my life. One night, one stage, one amazing group of people, changed my life forever.
