here are so many negative phrases out there about aging, aren’t there? I often hear the sayings “Old age ain’t for sissies” (Bette Davis) and “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” (Joni Mitchell), or “Life’s a b--ch and then you die” (author unknown). I don’t want those negative sayings to frame my thinking as a senior. The phrase I want to use as a mantra is “Age is an art.” It’s part of the saying, “Youth is a gift, age is an art,” printed on a button that I gave my grandmother many years ago. There are many arts that I find I am practising these days. The art of living with loss is something that many have experienced and some have described so well. There are many bloggers out there who write about aging. It’s not just the loss of family and friends (and pets), it’s also living with the

loss of intangibles, such as energy, sometimes health, work, mobility, maybe vision, community standing and even one’s home. Some people are inspiring in how they learn the art of living with loss, and I have some great friends who have demonstrated this inspiration as time goes on. There are many other arts that aging can demand or enhance. There is the art of patience with any shortcomings: with oneself, with others and with the health care system, for example. There is the art of time and often energy management: volunteer activities or paid employment, social time, family time, appointments, chores and routine tasks, medications, physical activity, spiritual exercise and so on. There is the art of financial management, including dealing with a relatively fixed income while living costs continue to rise and unexpected

expenses occur. The art of developing or enhancing wisdom is a key art that is so massive I cannot begin to describe it here. Just Google “wisdom and aging” to find gems like one in the New York Times, where one writer followed the lives of six 85-year-olds, for a year, and found that “old age is a mixture of happiness and sadness, with less time wasted on anger and worry.” Or you might find an article from Psychology Today, interviewing a woman born the same year as the Russian Revolution. The article highlighted her advice on throwing a party and the one thing you should say to your partner every day. I love thinking of aging as an art, as it can help in some rather trying circumstances. For example, I recently entered a large cont’d on page 3 ...

makeup/beauty store down south. It was full of brands and what looked like intriguing things for experimentation. But I was ignored as I wandered through the aisles looking for assistance from several idle sales attendants. Now, it could be that the attendants took one look at me and decided that no amount of makeup or lotions could help. I had a lot of fun—and time—to indulge in this art of being “invisible.” On the flip side, there is the art of visibility (connection is a better word). Through the privilege of time, I can become more visible to my family and friends. I can use my skills and donate time to help keep our community a great place to live, and perhaps make it a little bit better. The art of living for today is one that I am not good at. I have a hard time just sitting and thinking, or relaxing, while reading a trashy book or enduring the constraints from some medical conditions. An old friend of mine used to say, “We are human beings, not human doings”—and I am working on just being. Finally, there is an art to appreciating the joy of life in the Yukon. The return of sunshine and long days—maybe even some heat, but not too much; the beauty of our scenery; the warmth of our community. The list is wonderfully long. Maybe Robert Browning put it best: “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.”

rom Friday, August 24 until Sunday, August 26, musicians and filmmakers are invited and encouraged to take part in the creation of a music video that will be completed in only two days. Music Yukon, Yukon Film Society and Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) will be teaming up to tackle the 48-Hour Music Video Challenge with help from those who lend their skills to the project. “The 48-Hour Music Video Challenge is a challenge designed to allow filmmakers and musicians to work in a collaborative environment on a project that covers both disciplines and also forces them to work within the confines of a short deadline,” said Music Yukon director Andrea Stratis. “This will hopefully spark interest in both musicians and filmmakers to consider this medium in a different light and hopefully breed new creative partnerships.” For the project, participating musicians and filmmakers are asked to bring their own instruments and cameras, and everyone should bring some creative ingenuity. The ultimate goal of the finished product is to be captivating and engage viewers and listeners through means both narrative and experimental. Participants are allowed to pair themselves up in musician/filmmaker pairs or can be paired up by the organizers in charge. Those who want to participate and need to be connected with someone

can contact the event organizers and be put into a pair. People are also allowed to work by themselves if they prefer. “We hope that by providing this opportunity, it creates a bridge between the film and music industries to inspire collaboration and engagement,” said Stratis. “We also hope this creates strong material for an increasingly demanding content-driven online environment.”

The Yukon has very prominent communities in both music and film, and strengthening connections between the two communities could mean a more vibrant, well-rounded arts community, as a whole, something any artist in the Yukon would be glad to see progressing. In order to participate, the first step is signing up online, which can be done on both the Music Yukon and Yukon Film Society websites. The registration fee is preferred in cash and can be dropped off at Music Yukon. If there is an odd musician-to-filmmaker ratio, or vice versa, the registration fee will be refunded

to those who are not able to participate in the project. Once the videos by the participants are complete, they must be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo and a link sent to the organizers by the end of Sunday, August 26. The completed videos will be shown at screenings in Whitehorse and Dawson City. The dates and locations of the screenings have yet to be announced, but the videos will also be shown on NorthwesTel Community TV. Prizes and additional guidelines will also be announced soon. This is the first time the Yukon will be taking on the 48-Hour Music Video Challenge, so artists and creators shouldn’t miss the first opportunity to be part of such a project. Participants from anywhere in the Yukon and even from outside the territory are welcome to take part in the challenge. The Yukon’s inaugural 48-Hour Music Video Challenge will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 24. Check online at musicyukon.com and yukonfilmsociety.com for updates on locations, prizes and screening events. Questions can be sent to Takashi at tech@yukonfilmsociety.com.

This allows your feet and your boots to dry out and makes it simpler to rinse your tired feet in a nearby stream. While rinsing and relaxing your feet, you can check them for “hot spots” (redness), which can develop into blisters very quickly. There are commercial “foot-care” kits available that include various shapes of moleskin (thick, soft bandaging), including donut shapes to encircle but not touch hot-spots or blisters. Even trusty old Duct Tape can be used to protect tender spots often caused by chafing against a seam in the boot or sometimes the sock. A really important thing to remember, if your foot gets a sore spot, is to stop, examine and deal with the problem. They are usually pretty easy to deal with, but if you don’t it will likely become

Our feet suffer less and work longer when they are cared for and housed in proper fitting, good quality footwear. If you are a smaller, lighterweight person, then some of the newer lightweight, lower-cost hiking boots will work satisfactorily for you, as long as you aren’t packing a heavy load. A larger, heavier person, especially with a loaded pack, is always better off with more robust, stiffer European-style leather boots. Because of my size and weight, I have always worn the heavier boots, which are fitted differently than ordinary footwear. These boots must be large enough to accommodate a pair of thin polypropylene socks worn under a thicker pair of wool socks (never cotton). The fit should also be slightly longer than the length of your foot (so you can get a finger down behind your heel, inside the boot), because your feet swell when you work them hard. Geek Nation with Danny Macdonald

Embrace your inner geek!

On August 25, all ages will be given the opportunity to get their geek on as the Yukon Comic Culture Society hosts its Get Your Geek On! craft fair at the Gold Rush Inn This year, the Yukon Comic Culture Society will be scaling back Yukomicon, and in lieu of hosting a full-blown Con, they will hold the Get Your Geek On! craft fair on August 25 at the Gold Rush Inn Town Hall. The scope and cost of putting together a full-scale YukomiCon is challenging, so the society will likely aim to have one every second year, offset by the smaller-scale events. “Next year, we’re hoping to do a full Con, but it’s a big commitment of time, money and people,” said Yukon Comic Culture Society treasurer Paul Scholz. “We’re trying to be more community focused and put things on for everybody.” This year’s Get Your Geek On! event will feature 13 art vendors (as of this writing), two of whom hail from Watson Lake, according to president Carrie Jackson. They feature artists who do fantasy paintings, cards and illustrations, as well as crafters who make purses, dice bags, jewellery and some stuffies. “The vendors are the ones we usually have at YukomiCon,” Jack-

son explained. “They don’t usually sell elsewhere, so we wanted to give them a venue to sell their art.” But a vendor craft fair for geeks is not the only feature being organized by the group. The event will include a craft workshop for children in the Gold Rush Inn General Store and a Get Your Geek On! trivia competition in the evening from 7 to 10 p.m., which will also have a silent auction of geeky items donated by local businesses. The children’s craft workshop will be led by Jamie Strachan, the society’s YukomiKids workshop coordinator. Kids will be able to take part in a free crafting project and build their own Bowtruckles, a creature from the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Other crafting projects will be available, but supplies will require purchase. Kids will also have a selection of crosswords, colouring and board games to choose from at the workshop. The evening trivia will allow teams of six to “form either their

own Avengers, or a different Justice League,” according to Scholz. “You have to choose your teammates wisely,” Scholz explained. “You need different geek genres represented on your team.” Throughout the event, attendees are highly encouraged to embrace their inner geek and cosplay (costume for role-playing) for the day, as others will be. To encourage folks to come up with geeky costumes, there will be prizes presented including individual prizes for best craftsmanship, most unique, and best in genre, as well as others yet to be announced. The fair will not be the only event that the society is involved with until the end of 2018. You will find them at Culture Days in September, a Christmas craft fair in December, an event in Dawson City at Gertie’s that will involve cosplay, and a Dungeons and Dragons-focused event that will have details announced closer to the beginning of September. It’s the sense of community and the positive response from the community that drives them

You can expect friendly and welcoming care in an environment that relaxes even the most anxious patients. We all love what we do, and look forward to welcoming you and your family to our practice.

Yukon Comic Culture Society treasurer Paul Scholz (left) and president Carrie Jackson are helping to grow the Yukon’s geek culture to put on events and why they’ll host more in the future, according to Scholz. “We love doing them and love the reaction,” he said. “We’ve had lots of positive feedback. It’s just finding a way to channel all that positive energy.” For more information on the Get Your Geek On! fair, contact the Yukon Comic Culture Society

to keep posted on their future events, follow them on Facebook or email info@yukomicon.com. Danny Macdonald has some of that secret geek knowledge from hours of misspent youth and a love for the timey-wimey stuff, doing or not doing, philosophers in caves, and lions, witches and wardrobes.

Aussie Girl Mountain Biking with Kylie Campbell

Our group at the Mt. McIntyre Creek trailhead

Attempting world-class status with mediocre skills How to survive and experience world-famous mountain biking trails on Montana Mountain in Carcross

I

t’s a warm Sunday as we arrive at Travis Friesen and Michelle Irvine’s house in Granger, load our bikes into the back of their jeep and prepare for the journey to Montana Mountain in Carcross. The world-class mountain biking trails on Montana Mountain are internationally famous, with riders flocking to Carcross to try their hand at riding them. After a beautiful drive to Carcross, we arrive at the base of the mountain, the meeting point for the rest of the giant group of about 15, as several more show up and we slowly prepare to shuttle* up the mountain. The jeep ride is comfy, with four of us and our bikes; meanwhile, the other shuttle has an impressive num-

ber of riders and bikes, packing in 8 people and their bikes. As we shuttle, it’s remarkable that no one falls out of the truck on the dusty, rocky road. We arrive, with all riders and mountain bikes in tow, at the top of Mt. McIntyre Creek trail, and everyone unloads their bikes to prepare for the descent. It feels a bit terrifying and I wonder how I even got invited to join this impressive group of riders, so I decide to hang back. The leaders head off down the trail, leaving space between each other, and straight away I am shaken by the immediate, steep descent on dusty, loose dirt. It has been three weeks since I’ve ridden a mountain bike and I find my-

self thinking, Maybe I’m not quite prepared for this. However, I pull myself together and start the descent. The trails are long, winding down with little wooden bridge crossings (and with rocks). My arms barely keep up with the jolting sensations. As I catch up to the others, the group immediately goes again and I wonder, with the “bingo-wing” (arm workout, if my arms will survive the continued descent. Michelle, like a champion, who previously (last year) was the last one, hangs back to make sure I don’t kill myself. The descent continues and the group stops a couple more times ... waiting for the slowest cont’d on page 10 ...

Attempting world-class status with mediocre skills ... continued from pg 9 We may not be the fastest because Michelle and I take pictures, but we get there in the end

PHOTOS: Kylie Campbell mountain biker ever to catch up. Eventually, the main group leaves the four of us—yes, I am literally that slow that people couldn’t wait—and we continue down the McIntyre Creek trail, which feels like it is taking eternity to finish. The concentration required and the body commitment to keep on point, as exhaustion is slowly setting in ... mountain biking still isn’t fun yet; it’s mostly terrifying and requires a lot of skill that my body has zero muscle memory for. I start to waver as I reach a rather-large tree root on the trail; and, for a moment, my concentration is elsewhere and my front tire dips down. Then, like a slow-motion slapstick comedy, I fall head first off of Grasshopper and down the hill into some juniper bushes. Surprisingly, I have only a few cuts, scrapes and bruises ... and I smell wonderful. As I get back on my bike, I decide it is time to munch on some snacks to boost my energy level. Eventually, we arrive at the White Pass & Yukon Railway tracks that run alongside Bennett Lake. Here, the full group was already eating lunch and observing the beauty of the White Pass Mountains as a backdrop to

Lake Bennett. It was an incredible day to enjoy the Yukon landscape, even if this was the first time I got to appreciate it since starting to ride (looking down in perpetual fear distracts you from looking around). Now it was time to ride to Carcross. Travis describes the trail to Michelle and I, “There are some ups and downs, but it’s a really good cross-country biking trail.” We begin the ascent on Wayne’s World trail. Then more ascent— some down, then ascending again. Most of the time I’m walking up the ascents (this trail seemed to be mostly ascending) and my legs and body just can’t do it any longer, but we keep pushing on. “We’re about halfway,” Travis says. Michelle and I groan in disbelief, thinking we are almost finished. We are “done” and ready to sit down and drink a beer in Carcross. It’s difficult to appreciate the beauty of nature and the blossoming flowers of purple, yellow and pink when your body is ready to lie down. One last section and we make it to Carcross where Michelle and I high-five each other over our success at surviving two and a half hours of riding.

The trails at Montana are definitely categorized differently than those in Whitehorse … the “blue” (intermediate) Carcross trails were much tougher. However, we survived and were able to enjoy the beautiful day as we sat at the

Travis Friesen getting us ready

Bistro on Bennett, inhaling a burger and a beer in the warm sun. I’m thankful for friends who have the patience for a slow beginner to join in on these adventures. For more details on mountain biking in Carcross, check out http://destinationcarcross.ca/. To find fellow riders or get answers to questions, check out the CMBC Yukon Facebook group or contact them for more information. *Shuttle—to leave a vehicle at the base and drive up with bikes and people. After riding down

the mountain, you take the base vehicle up to the top to collect the shuttle vehicles. It means not having to ride up the mountain to come down. Kylie Campbell is an Australian who does things backwards, she learnt to ski before she surfed and thinks pushing your limits to tears is fun. She’s constantly on the lookout to try new things and hopes to keep Grasshopper and herself intact mountain biking the Yukon this summer.

Grandpa’s Favourite

RV Hotspots by Doug Sack It required a great deal of thought about a large number of camping and work trips between 1971 and 2018 to trim this wild turkey down to the following menu: ALASKA West coast of Kenai Peninsula and Dyea tidal flats N.W.T. The Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk via Dempster Highway NORTHERN B.C. Atlin YUKON Kluane Park: Slim’s River, Sheep Mountain and the Donjek Top of the World: an oasis of scenery, serenity and solitude Southern Lakes: including Yukon’s newest campground (Conrad) on the Windy Arm of Tagish Lake “Dawson would be gone too. That town is more flood-prone than Atlantis.” Doomsday camping on Top of the World

PHOTO: NASA/JPL-Caltech, modified by David Fuchs at en.wikipedia, via Wikimedia Commons was on target to collide with Earth and everyone knew the exact day and time of the explosion to blow up the planet, where would you want to go camping for the last night?” Mars, perhaps? Maybe the moon. Uranus? Pluto? Alpha Centauri would be fine ... “No. Really, somewhere on Earth, in the Yukon. Where is your favourite campsite where

PHOTO: NASA images by Reto Stöckli, via Wikimedia Commons The following doomsday scenario was discussed recently, around an early evening campfire at Takhini Hot Springs campground, in a marshmallow conversation with three grandchildren (boy, boy, girl) now aged seven to 11, all of whom are new readers with varied literary interests. It began with an innocent question from #2, probably derived from a Superman comic book: “Grandpa, if a giant asteroid

The Blue Marble is an image of planet Earth taken on December 7, 1972, by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft at a distance of about 29,000 kilometres (18,000 miles) from the surface. It is one of the most reproduced images in human history. This photo was released on October 9, 2007, by the Goddard Space Flight Center

you would like to spend the last night before the big smashup?” Well, definitely somewhere waaaay above the treeline, like the top of Mount Logan, because the surface of our beloved old “Blue Marble” is 71 per cent water, and the size of the super-tsunami made by a giant asteroid, splashing in any ocean, would be massive, like a milehigh wall of water. That’s basically what wiped out the dinosaurs, which were a lot tougher

This shaded relief image of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula shows a subtle, but unmistakable, indication of the Chicxulub impact crater. Most scientists now agree that this impact was the cause of the CretatiousTertiary Extinction, the event 65 million years ago that marked the sudden extinction of the dinosaurs, as well as the majority of life then on Earth

than we are. “Where did that one hit the Earth?” There are several theories, but the best scientific guess is the Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico. It hit half land and half water and left a crater called Chicxulub. The Tsunami killed everything below 5,000 feet, and the giant dust cloud blotted out the sun for a decade or two, killing the rest of the dinosaurs and 75 per cent of all living things. The only dinos which survived lived underwater, like sharks and gators and many birds that just flew away and found remote places to survive such as Tasmania and Antarctica. Did you know most birds are descended from dinosaurs like pterodactyls? That tsunami is one reason you kids live on the high and dry side of the biggest mountain range in North America, which I call the St. Elias Breakwater ... “WHY do we live here?” You’re all little Yukoners today because your paternal grandfather is scared silly of tsunamis. “What else are you afraid of?” Volcanoes. Hurricanes. Typhoons. Monsoons. Lightning, but not thunder. I actually like thunder. “Didn’t you live on Hawaii for a while?” A short while, yes. One winter, terrified the whole time. Great rainbows though. “What else scares you?” Avalanches. Being buried alive. Lawyers. Heights. Drunks with guns. Wars. Snakes. I was in Ha-

Dino Doomsday is believed to have been caused by a single rock, a very large single rock, nine miles in diameter waii when the first-ever snake came to the Honolulu Zoo. The whole island lined up to look at it because they had never seen a snake before. That’s when I left. Anyplace that has snakes, tsunamis, typhoons, monsoons, volcanoes and is surrounded by deadly salt water doesn’t need me. In my opinion, anyone who lives anywhere close to an ocean or a large lake is off their rocker and not thinking straight. There are water people and mountain people. We are among the latter. “So where would you want to go camping in the mountains of the Yukon, the night before the giant asteroid collides with Earth?” Well, I would say up the Dempster, my favourite part of the Yukon, except the high Arctic is flatter than a Mancini pizza, and nothing up there is going to stop an asteroidal tsunami. It would be like “Last Gringo on a Pingoe”—so the Dempster is out. My second choice would be somewhere up on the Top of the World highway, on the Canadian side of the border, way above the treeline in the alpine tundra with one-hundred-mile views in all directions. What a spot to watch the end of the world! The Yukon River would probably backup with high water, maybe even reversing the direction of the flow, but it would never climb up into the high tundra. We’d be safe from the flooding up there, but the ferry back to Dawson would be gone like a rubber ducky in Miles Canyon. Dawson would be gone too. That town is more flood-prone than Atlantis. “So what would make us go the way of the dinosaurs, then?” Most of the dinos died slowly from starvation when the sun disappeared and plants couldn’t

grow. Humans might actually survive the next asteroid by living like gophers in well-stocked Cold War underground bunkers for a couple-hundred years, but the dinos didn’t have a chance outside. “Grandpa, is that ever really going to happen?” Yep, because it’s a statistical certainty to happen again, or several more times, within the expected lifespan of our sun, which is five billion more years. There have already been five major extinctions on Earth, but don’t lose any sleep over it. The last one, the dinos, was sixty-five million years ago. I took your dad camping up on the Top of the World when he was your age. Maybe I should take you three up to pick out a camping spot while we still can. I can’t imagine a better place to watch Armageddon by Asteroid … to answer your original question. “Maybe we would be close enough to see Superman punch out the asteroid, knock it off course and save the world.” Maybe ... but seeing a dancing neon moose, with sparkling antlers, blowing bubbles in a pink tutu is more likely. “Are there any marshmallows left before the world ends?” Next time: Grandpa’s Finale to the RV Hotspots series, camping on the shore of the Arctic Ocean, a new Canadian summer adventure.

Finding great finds

The Whitehorse Community Thrift Store Society will be looking to open a local community-minded thrift store to repurpose your stuff! by Joie Quarton

W

hen it comes to buying clothes, I’m not much of a thrift shopper and I am often so impressed by the things friends find and look great in. What I look for at thrift stores are old linen tablecloths, especially ones with embroidery on them. At $3 or $4, it is almost impossible for me to not take them home and add them to my collection. I use them on my picnic table in the summer and when I organize dinner parties in the winter. They perfectly complement the old dishes my grandmother left me and that I am determined to use, not just look at. Occasionally, I am inspired to sew something from one of my tablecloth finds. My mom was an intrepid thrift shopper and volunteer. In fact, one of the funny family stories we tell is about the blue-and-white sheets she found at the Summerland Thrift Shop. She always made her own pajamas, and the blue sheets with white stars on them were perfect for that repurpose. When she got them made, however, she decided they looked so good, she’d wear them to her bridge club, where her friends also

thought they looked really good. Fast forward to my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary dinner, held in a vineyard in the Okanagan, and there she was, laughing with my dad after 50 years of marriage, and wearing the outfit she created from repurposed sheets! When my mom died, I sewed myself a shirt from an old linen tablecloth purchased at the Summerland Thrift Shop, the place my mother shopped at and volunteered at for at least 50 years! The Summerland Thrift Shop is inspiring … staffed entirely by volunteers; last year it gave away $399,000 to health-related organizations. Like I said, I’m not as clever as some of my friends at finding great clothes at thrift shops. I love colour and fashion and often end up with new clothes in my closet that were purchased a bit impulsively, lured by a beautiful print or style. When I realize that I am not really likely to wear the item, however, I am really happy to pass it on to someone who will, and it gives me significant pleasure to feel I am contributing to someone else’s opportunity to pick up a great find at

a thrift store. That’s been pretty challenging here in Whitehorse for the past year or so. Like many of you, I can’t bear to put the clothes or housewares I know I will no longer use into the landfill, and although it does make me think more about what I purchase, dumping my unwanted stuff just feels wrong. Last spring, I heard there was a group beginning to organize a new thrift store for Whitehorse. I went to a meeting and was hooked. Here was a diverse, interesting, committed group of people—some individuals, and some representing non-profit organizations— who were really determined to address this gap in our community. Some of the faces have changed since that first meeting, but the drive and commitment remain. We have now incorporated as a non-profit, the Whitehorse Community Thrift Store Society. We have obtained a business license and gathered 1200 square feet of used clothes, books, housewares and toys. We have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise seed money to rent a permanent space and hire a project manager. We

Bargain hunters have been finding quality repurposed and recycled items at thrift store pop-ups this summer have dreams and ideas for what this place could be—a community gathering place, a place to learn about recycling and repurposing, a place where quality used clothing and housewares will be available at affordable prices and not end up in the dump. As we have gathered reusable stuff in our temporary location at Northern Vision Development Place (the old Canadian Tire) and, relying on a growing cadre of volunteers, we have entered the circular economy by holding several pop-up thrift stores to begin bringing in money and providing some of Whitehorse’s great used stuff for sale. We are only in our current location until the end of August, so have been reluctant to open ourselves up to the tsunami of donations we expect when we send out the invitation that we are ready to receive your stuff. Stay tuned—we hope this will be possible soon. We plan to be able to take your great used stuff soon!

Joie Quarton currently chairs the Steering Committee for the Whitehorse Community Thrift Store Society. She is committed to leaving a light footprint on the planet!

In the meantime ... Hold on to your stuff a little longer and know that we are working hard to make this happen on a permanent, regular basis. Come and check us out at events such as our Love 2 Thrift Toonie Sale, which was held on August 15 in the old Canadian Tire building. Contribute to our GoFundMe campaign. Our goal is $70,000, which will enable us to lease a permanent location and hire a manager: www. GoFundMe.com\love-2-thrift-yukon.

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

The life and times of a beaver (and steadfast overachiever) I t may be hard to visualize, but there was a genus of beaver the size of a black bear (and some horses were as small as German shepherds). It is amazing to see what natural selection has done, as well, and will continue to do as our planet undergoes climate change. Biology, combined with wildlife management, is one of the most interesting as well as complex sciences on Earth. In my 10 years, as a conservation officer, I spent considerable time in beaver management that included live-trapping and relocating—blowing dams that were flooding farmlands, roads, etc. Finally, I learned first-hand when I decided to raise a small beaver, before its eyes were open, until it was in excess of 40 pounds ... but that’s a story for my book, when I finally get it finished. In Canada, the beaver is the largest member of the rodent family. The largest beaver I ever live-trapped was 63 pounds. There are, of course, many fallacies about the beaver. One fallacy is its ability to fall a tree to the very spot it wants to. In reality, should the tree fall in the direction of its dam (for construction), it is 100 per cent pure luck. I do, however, have to give the beaver some credit for its intelligence ... I have witnessed a beaver cutting down trees a fair dis-

tance from the beaver pond. Then it started to dig a ditch about three-feet wide— deep enough to float some of the branches out to the pond. And as for choosing the best location to build a dam (just as for choosing the location for falling trees), it is only by chance that dams hold back a large body of water (rather than by intelligent selection). The longest and oldest dam I ever saw, in northern Ontario, measured 1,400 feet long and seven feet high. It held a large body of water that contained two beaver houses, one on each side of the pond. In my patrol area in eastern Ontario, over a period of two years, I watched a family of beavers build a giant of a beaver house out of sticks, mud and stones. The final pictures I took of it showed the “house” seven feet above the water’s surface. Another conservation officer and I opened up one such lodge, after we had blown the dam, to gain a better understanding of a beaver house. I could actually crawl down into the den. A beaver never stops enlarging their house with mud

PHOTO: Murray Martin

One of the two beavers on Twin Lakes Park Lake. Lisa Martin is in the foreground, kayaking and sticks to accommodate their family. When baby beavers are born, typically around April, other young beavers, who have been part of the family for just a year, stay with the family, but those that have reached about two years of age are ushered out of the house and are then on their own. There is another fallacy that beavers eat only bark. This, I assure you, is a fable. Bobby The Beaver (the one I raised) had a varied vegetarian diet. His home was in a small pond in our backyard. Often he would escape from

his fenced-in home, invade the neighbours’ gardens and berry patches, and feast on some of the best agricultural products to be found in the neighbourhood. During the fall, beavers work hard at falling trees, dragging the branches and securing them at the bottom of the pond. In winter, beavers use tunnels they have made in the bottom of a river or pond bed. They travel through these to feast on branches for up to 15 minutes at a time and then return to their dens to fill up on some much-needed oxygen.

Have you ever wondered how many other species rely on the beaver building its dam and creating a small lake? Actually, the beaver pond ultimately serves as a “dinner table”—for just about every species that flies, walks, swims or crawls—and plays an important factor in the future of all wildlife. Murray Martin is a former Ontario conservation officer and a longstanding member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.
