all is upon us. When I leave the house in the mornings now, the sun has yet to awaken. It feels too early in the season to see my breath, but here we are. Winter whispering at us does come with some pretty wicked benefits, though: the air is crisp, giving us unreal clarity; the mountains are snow-capped again, seemingly overnight; and the trees are blushing in full force. What better time to get outside and explore? As soon as the turn began, I packed my camera bag and headed to Kluane. The drive there

alone is saturated with a beautiful display of fall creeping in, in the best way. If you want to do something a little more relaxed or take the kids on a nature walk, I highly recommend the Dezadeash River walk. It’s only about 5.5 kilometres round-trip (if you stick to the main trail), and flat. It’s less adventurous than I generally opt for, but if you happen to be in the area, make the stop. You can find the trailhead by following signs on the right-hand side (if you’re coming from Whitehorse direction) of the highway just as you pass through the south end of Haines Junction, a little ways after the Alaska Highway turnoff. The trail is well-marked and alternates between a wide dirt path and a boardwalk scattered with information boards. Despite

the name, there aren’t views of the river the whole way; it’s more of a forest walk with some incredible viewing points, to scope out wildlife and the colours of the season. Despite it’s easy accessibility, it’s not overrun; I went on a Sunday and only saw about four other people. Keep in mind that bear sightings in the area are common, so please keep pets on leashes and children within view—and make a bit of noise around corners. Enjoy the brilliance of fall, and finish up with an “obligatory” Village Bakery treat—even if you didn’t work that hard for it (I won’t tell if you don’t).

From My Mother’s Kitchen with Murray Martin

Old fashioned baked breads I

f you are from the 1930s and ‘40s, you may still long for those old-fashioned baked breads of all different tastes. You will also know what was in them and, to me, that is what is most important. Remember, those were the days when a man was sure, when walking down the street, that the woman walking with him was on the inside of the sidewalk (otherwise it was like advertising that the lady was “for sale”). To honour the lady folks, men always opened the door for them and never walked into a building ahead of them. To truly show respect for the women folk, we men never wore a hat in a building where there were ladies. Sadly, how times have changed. Well, not for me ... It makes me feel good practising those old-fashioned ideas.

TODAY I BAKED OLD-FASHIONED BANANA NUT BREAD

I LOVE OLD-FASHIONED DATE LOAF

Ingredients: 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup white sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp soda 2 cups flour ½ cup walnuts 1 egg 2 mashed bananas

Ingredients: 1 lb chopped dates 1 cup chopped walnuts A little mixed peel ½ cup sugar 2-1/2 cups flour 11 tsp vanilla 1 tsp soda in a little water Lemon extract 1 cup butter 3 eggs Method: Mix and bake in a loaf pan for about 1 hour at 350℉.

Method: Mix and pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake in a slow oven for 1 hour.

OLD-FASHIONED CRANBERRY BREAD Ingredients: 2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 1 1/2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp soda ¾ cup orange juice 1 Tbsp grated rind 1 egg 2 cups chopped cranberries ½ cup shortening Salt to taste Method: Sift the dry ingredients. Cut in shortening. Combine juice, rind and egg. Pour into the flour mix-

ture and mix enough to just dampen. Carefully fold in the nuts and berries. Spoon into the greased loaf pan and spread corners higher than the center. Bake at 360℉ for 1 hour. Remove from the pan and cool. Store 24 hours before cutting. FROM THE ‘40s: OLD-FASHIONED WALNUT BREAD Ingredients: 3 cups sifted white flour 4 tsp baking powder 1 lightly beaten egg 1 1/2 cup milk 1 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup white sugar

1 tsp salt ¼ cup melted shortening 1 tsp vanilla Method: Sift flour with sugar, baking powder and salt. Add egg, shortening, milk and vanilla to dry mixture. Stir just until all flour is moistened. Add walnuts. Turn batter into greased 9x3x5 loaf pan. Bake at 350℉ for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Murray Martin shares recipes from the 1940s and ‘50s with us. Igniting their passion to fight fire Ember Fire Academy equips women, ages 16 and over, with the skills and resources to make life-saving decisions

by Kylie Campbell

What is the Ember Fire Academy?

It’s a free, intensive program for women to experience the challenging task of being a firefighter. The intention is to promote firefighting as a career option for women and to encourage them to volunteer within the Yukon’s various emergency services. The weeklong training is femaleled, with the support of both male and female staff, working on the operations of firefighting scenarios. Kiara Adams, chief of the Ember Academy (the only female structural firefighter in the Yukon), and two other female firefighters from North Vancouver, were the primary instructors. Twelve female recruits, ranging from 17 to 37 years old—fresh from high school, to working moms—attended the 4th Ember Fire Academy that gave the women an opportunity to push themselves.

The experience

u Day 1

On the first morning, a group of strangers came together at the

Golden Horn Volunteer Fire Department (GHVFD) located just outside Whitehorse city limits, near Carcross cut-off. After introductions, safety briefing and physical training, the women began their education on the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)—vital equipment for all structural firefighters. We learned how to wear and use the equipment, and after lunch it was time to utilize the search drill classroom instruction in a practical environment. Getting used to being covered completely in heavy equipment and breathing as though you’re in a scuba diving situation can be intimidating. To learn search drill technique, we had to experience what it would be like if a room was filled with smoke (without actually simulating it). This meant putting garbage bags over the full SCBA and PPE. For anyone, like myself, with a fear of confined spaces, this was one of the biggest challenges to face. As I convinced myself that I wouldn’t suffocate (I had access to air), I had to learn to breathe and overcome the fear. My partner and I were both nervous but worked together to complete the search drills. We could not see or rely on our partners, so we learned the skills that were vital to firefighting. I surprised myself as I completed each of the tasks. After intense search drills, Kiara Adams taught a fire-behaviour lesson, an impressive chemistry les-

Riding in a fire truck should be every little kid’s dream— cause it’s awesome son and practical demonstration of what fire is and how it behaves.

u Day 2

On the second day, especially for those of us who didn’t work out on a daily basis, we were certainly feeling all of those physical training burpees and pushups. After our safety briefing and physical training, we donned our gear and were driven in fire trucks to visit the Carcross Volunteer Fire Department where we would spend two days training. At Carcross, on our first day, we worked with firefighting equipment including hydrants, extinguishers, ladders, communications, pumps and hoses. Our day wasn’t complete after the exhausting, physically demanding day. We stayed in Carcross for the evening with the wildland fire crew who set up wall tents for us. In the evening, there was a really interesting talk about wildland firefighting, with the Yukon Government, and firefighting in the Yukon. There were demonstrations

ast year, when I arrived in the Yukon, I saw an article on the Ember Fire Academy, a Yukon Government Protective Service program. There were images of women breaking apart cars and fighting fires and I thought, Wow, what an incredible experience and tasked myself with working towards getting a spot in the 2018 training.

Using extinguishers in combatting different types of fire and explanations of how structural firefighting was different than wildland firefighting.

u Day 3

In the morning we awoke in beautiful Carcross for another intensive day of training in technical rope rescue, hazmat and confined space. The morning was spent with the XY Charlie Crew, the First Nation wildland firefighting crew, in understanding the physical requirements for wildland service. Afterwards, we drove to Mon-

tana Mountain where we were introduced to technical rope rescue, which pushed some trainees outside their comfort zones with height. During lunch, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) officers gave a presentation on joining services in the communities, focusing on first aid. The afternoon was spent practising some intensive confinedspace and hazmat drills, which certainly pushed my own limits of cont’d on page 13 ...

Learning how fire behaves and combatting it

afternoon used all of our skills to conduct a fire attack scenario. GHVFD has a fire scenario trailer, which allows volunteers to practice what it’s like to be in a structural fire (with actual fire). The scenario works on propane fire within the trailer, which has obstacles like stairs for the trainees to practice.

u Day 6 the vehicles with our hoses. Unable to hear, we battled flames in the heat and sun while our adrenalin was still pulsating; but honestly, we were feeling bad-ass as we extinguished the flames. claustrophobia. After a jam-packed two days of training in Carcross, that afternoon it was time to ride back in fire trucks to GHVFD.

u Day 4

By Thursday, muscles we didn’t know we had were tired because we never used them. And we were exhausted from pushing our comfort zones and limits. Now it was time for some of the fun stuff ... After physical training, it was time to learn to do auto extrication (rescuing someone trapped in a vehicle). The Golden Horn Volunteer Fire Department provided a number of old cars for us to practice with. We started with breaking windows and working with tools, such as the Jaws of Life, to disassemble the vehicles and extricate our “patients.” The tools were heavy, but impressive in their ability to break a car to pieces. After lunch, we focused on vehicle fires and strategies to approach and put out fires. We put on firefighting gear with oxygen and the vehicles were lit on fire. Adrenalin pulsed as we approached

u Day 5

Friday was for refining skills, bringing all of our training together to attack a fire. First we learned about the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), the team, on crews, that assists fellow firefighters that require immediate extrication from a situation. We practised a real-life scenario whereby, as a team, we prepared with SCBA kits, with team leaders and roles, to rescue victims inside small smoke-filled rooms. As I focused on my breathing (and not on the fact that I was entering a small space where I wouldn’t be able to see), my heart felt as though it was pumping outside of my chest. We entered the room, focusing on the techniques we had been taught throughout the week—how to manoeuvre in a smoke-filled environment, how to communicate and search when you were unable to see more than a couple of centimetres in front of you ... It took a lot of energy to focus on staying inside the room. We worked together and got our patient out. We trained further with ladder rescue and used skills such as confined-space maneuvering, with objects such as wires in the way. The

Using the tools for auto extrication

The last day of training involved a fire ground scenario. All trainees, in teams, began in the hall, and as the call came in with the emergency situation, we donned our gear and got on fire trucks to go to the scenario. We followed protocol and training, working together to combat the fire and rescue patients. All 12 women successfully completed the fourth academy. Ember Fire Academy Chief Kiara Adams, Fire Marshall James Paterson and Deputy Fire Marshall Colin O’Neil presented our certificates. Ember Fire Academy is an incredible opportunity for women from all backgrounds (age 16 and over) to not only gain new skills and interest in firefighting, but also to understand and believe that women are capable in any profession. I wish I had known or been encouraged to do fire service, but in my adolescence this type of job was targeted for men. Although my fitness and age would prevent switching into a career in firefighting, I certainly am keen to join the volunteer fire service in the Yukon. The training pushed my comfort level; I did things I didn’t think I was capable of doing, and all while being told I could do it. The encouragement to add these skills to your life, moving forward, is certainly inspiring. My favourite daily quote read by one of the instructors was this: “She needed a hero, so that’s what she became” (author unknown). For more information about the Ember Fire Academy or about volunteer firefighting in the Yukon, contact the Yukon Fire Marshall at 867-667-8236 or visit http://www. community.gov.yk.ca/protectiveservices/volunteerism_employment.html.

’ve been there, watching a play when it happens. A sharp staccato rings out as the actor’s hand makes contact with their partner’s face onstage, and audience members grimace in sympathy, knowing that the fake slap made real contact. Usually the actor fights through the pain and tears to complete the scene before (in my imagination) going backstage to yell at their co-star. That’s not how it should play out and with some training, overall performances can improve as well, according to Open Pit Theatre artistic director Geneviève Doyon, who is hosting stage director and fight choreographer Kevin Robinson, from Toronto, for a workshop. “We thought, What sort of workshop can we offer that’s different and inclusive?” Doyon said. “It’s really different. In my time here [in the Yukon], nothing like this has been offered. “It’s learning how to fall, how to take a slap. Learning how to do it safely.” The day will be broken into two separate workshops—an intro to un-

armed physicality, in the morning, and a second workshop dedicated to cinematographers, in the afternoon. The direction and skill needed to produce realistic-looking fights depends on the skills of both actors and those working the camera, according to Doyon. “The filmmakers’ workshop is an extra for industry people or maybe Yukoners interested in the 48 Hour Film Festival,” she said. “Actors have a big part to play, but cinematographers have a big influence on how it’s shot, with angles and framing.” Doyon took performance fight training while in theatre school, and from her experience there are benefits to the overall acting performance when someone has taken that specialized training. “When you do heightened physicality training, you have to be really present and aware of your partner, or something can go wrong. You can transfer that because if you are 100 per cent present, you can be better with regular scenes. “It’s another tool in your toolbox. It’s tips and tricks that can

make a you a better performer— not just in fighting, but [they] can help make other things look more real.” The workshops will cater to all levels of experience, which is one of Robinson’s strengths. Doyon explains that he is able to cater to a number of different levels in the workshops, so that participants are all working on different activities that are tailored to their skills. As well, the camera workshop doesn’t require high-tech equipment, and those interested in using tablets or phones, to film, can also participate. But at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity to learn some fun, active acting tools that haven’t been offered in the territory recently. “We all liked play-fighting as kids,” she said. “It’s a good way to access fun, which can be lost. Right before you go on stage, directors will say, ‘Have fun.’” The workshop will take place on September 15 at the Alpine Bakery. Participants are asked to register in advance and can do so by visiting their website at http://openp.it/. For more information, contact Jessica Hickman at jessica@openp.it.

North meets South

Halin de Repentigny’s “Homestay” – Keep the Fire Burning gallery will be at the Old Fire Hall from September 14 to 16 by Danny Macdonald

E

volution and expansion are the words to describe the next steps in Halin de Repentigny’s 40-plus-years journey as a northern artist. His upcoming gallery showcase, “Homestay” Keep the Fire Burning, in September, will continue his depictions of northern lifestyles. It’s a collection of all new work that he painted last winter in Dawson City. Wintering in the North was a departure from his normal routine, as de Repentigny has regularly wintered in Argentina over the past decade. This winter was a chance to help his new wife understand where his inspiration came from and provided the opportunity to spend time painting based on their activities. it’s the

first time in a while people will see his paintings with snow on them, de Repentigny chuckled. “My new wife wanted to experience the winter,” he explained. “I wanted to experience with my new wife the other side of me. “We got out trapping and snowshoeing. We got up to Moosehide. It’s very northern. Northern lifestyles.” He tries to hold a gallery in Whitehorse every two years, to display his new works for the numerous fans he’s acquired over the years. But he’s working to expand beyond his traditional supporters and has big plans for 2020 when he has secured gallery shows in

Victoria, at the Madrona Gallery; and in Whistler, at the Adele Campbell Gallery. “I’m starting to put my footprint in Vancouver,” de Repentigny said. “It’s a new audience ... you have to establish yourself again and make a name for yourself.” De Repentigny believes he isn’t a regular artist, but appreciates that those galleries believe in him and his work. And support his growth and evolution over the years. He’s a firm believer in changing your style and methods. “Some artists stick to gigs that work,” he said. “I believe in painting whatever style you want. If it’s a good painting, it’s a good painting. “You’ve got to evolve. That’s what those galleries down south saw. I’m evolving and I paint better than I did twenty years ago.” Part of that is from his experience in Argentina and their use of colour. The palette they have is different and he’s used that experience to evolve his palette and use of colours. The gallery runs from September 14 to 16. De Repentigny’s collection of paintings, created during his winter in Dawson, exceeds the available space, so they plan to make additional paintings available through private showings after the show. For more information on the show and private showings, contact his agent, Susan Stanley, by email at susan@ theartistproj.com.
