The Best for Your Kitchen - Since 1974 -

was listening to the radio this morning as I was repairing my snowshoes. The host was trying to convince his listeners of the benefits of driverless cars. He was saying people will have more time to make use of, rather than driving. He gave examples, such as flip down a bed and catch up on your sleep on the way to work, lay out a mat and do yoga, pump weights, run on a treadmill or get a head start on your work. He said you can even cook breakfast on the way to work. Now I’ve known some lazy SOBs in my time, but this takes the cake. But what people don’t know is that we’ve had driverless transport here in the North for eons. It’s called a dogsled. Ask any old-timer and he’ll tell you a story about how he fell asleep in his dogsled and his team brought him home, in the moon-

light. Or how he can roll a smoke while sitting in his toboggan. Try that on Highway 2, between Edmonton and Calgary. You’d be wrapped around a power pole before you could say, “Come gee!” There’s a famous story of how a woman named Ernestine suspected her husband, Henry, of “tipi creepin’.” Whenever their neighbour, Alphonse, would go on extended trips to check his traplines, Henry would make some lame excuse to take the dogs out for a run. This guy couldn’t ‘trap his thumb’ and was as useless as a three-legged wheel dog. If it weren’t for his wife’s dad, who kept them in rabbits and fish, he’d of starved years ago. His dogs were just as useless because all they did was lay around and get fat off the father-in-law’s fish. But they knew where to go when they got hitched up.

So one night, when Henry had a little too much home brew, Ernestine hitched up the dogs and got them out on the trail to see where they would go. And, sure enough, they went around the bend, like they were trained to do, then cut across a dry lake and around the back slough toward Alphonse’s place. The few dogs that Alphonse left behind starting barking when they sensed another dog team was coming. When Alphonse’s wife, Lucy, heard her dogs barking, she took the curlers out of her hair and put on lipstick. When Ernestine knocked on the door, Lucy opened it. Expecting Henry, she stood there with closed eyes and her lips protruding for an expected kiss. But instead of Henry’s lips, she got a face full of tallow in a pie plate. So they start calling her Lucy “Tallow” after that. Not only that, but a sled dog

Driverless cars, ‘all that and a bag of chips’... cont’d can sense danger out on the trail. If a leader can smell water, he’ll stop dead in his tracks, warning the driver of impending danger ahead (usually overflow). If you don’t know what overflow is, go to The Pit in Dawson and ask the bartender … she’ll tell you. A dog can also sense if you’ve got something caught in your trap. They’ll get all excited and start pulling and yanking on their harness toward whatever critter is in your trap. Try that with a smart car. I got a dollar fifty says they wouldn’t know a mink from a weasel. Sometimes, too, when you’re out on the trapline, your dogs can get away from you if your snow hook is not dug in. But if they do run away, chances are they will find their way home. They say if a smart car’s accelerator gets stuck, then you’re as good as worm food. Yeah, people think the future is “all that and a bag of chips,” without ever realizing that we had things figured out pretty good before TV, cars, microwaves and the internet. The only reason you don’t hear about the past is because people are too embarrassed to say they used to have to make coffee in a lard pail, as they are standing in line for a 10-dollar cup of coffee at Starbucks. So the next time someone tries to sell you on the future, remember the story of Lucy “Tallow.” Dennis Allen is an award winning filmmaker, forlorn songwriter, and hopeless storyteller. He’s the only guy he knows who’s never seen the Stones.

Busting up in the communities

Open Pit Theatre brings its play, Busted Up: A Yukon Story, to Dawson, Carcross and Whitehorse beginning September 29 by Gabriela Sgaga

O

pen Pit Theatre is excited to be taking their play, Busted Up: A Yukon Story, on the road. They’ll be coming to Dawson City on September 29, Carcross on October 2 and will be back in Whitehorse for a show on October 3. The play already premiered in 2017, as part of Canada 150, playing in Whitehorse and Haines Junction, but according to director Jessica Hickman, some things have changed this time around. “There are two new actors, which will bring a different feel to the piece, the staging is different and we’ve added tiny things and removed things that aren’t relevant this time around,” she said. What is the same, though, is the play’s format, which is presented in verbatim style rather than a traditional story line. A verbatim (wordfor-word) style of theatre uses the real words from real people to construct the play. “You go out, interview people and take their words directly—onehundred per cent,” said Hickman. “What’s amazing about verbatim style is that you don’t know how the show will end up when you set out.” Hickman says it all started in 2014 when she and Open Pit coartistic director Genevieve Doyon wanted to tell a story about the Yukon. They decided to go out to

the communities with broad questions such as, What does living in the North mean to you? “We began by wondering about the different ways of living on the land. We didn’t know how people would respond or what they would want to talk about,” said Hickman. In the end, people wanted to talk about everything, including how they came to the Yukon, why they stayed, their beliefs, their roots and their fears, relationships between indigenous people and settlers, natural resource extractions, the growing immigrant population and the changes the North is experiencing. Doyon then spent two years crafting the play, always keeping in mind the ethical line, in verbatim theatre, of not changing the intent or words in the editing process. “It’s really important to honour the people we were speaking to by getting the context of what they were talking about. It was a long process, but we’re proud of it,” said Hickman. Once completed, she and Doyon sent the finished script to the interviewees to look over, talking to them on the phone, as well, just to make sure everyone was OK with the result. Hickman says she was nervous for the 2017 premiere in Whitehorse. “There’s lots of beauty [in the

PHOTO: Alistair Maitland play], but it also challenges the audience. It’s interesting to watch a show where you can’t distance yourself—you can say not my community; but in the end, it is. People felt disgust, pride, beauty, compassion—it was overwhelming. It’s such a magical piece.” This year’s cast of Busted Up includes three local Whitehorse actors and four guest actors from across Canada. Each actor plays six different characters, changing the way they speak and move (rather than changing their clothing) to reflect different genders, ethnicities and ages. “It was very challenging for the actors,” said Hickman. “What was that real person like? Do they have a voice in the higher register? What are their mannerisms? … all the ums, sighs, snorts—everything

is included. It’s very detailed and very real.” In fact, the play is so real that Hickman feels there are elements in it that every single person can relate to. She recounts how during the 2017 premiere in Whitehorse, tourists in the audience didn’t necessarily understand the subtleties, but they understood the themes. “They’re pretty universal,” she said. Because of the strong impact of the show, both Hickman and Doyon will be available after the performance for a talk back, during which audience members will have the opportunity to discuss their thoughts and ask questions. Hickman says that even though touring is a lot of work, they are looking forward to getting out into the communities. They are also ex-

Actors reciting words of real life characters in Busted Up: A Yukon Story cited to bring the play to western Canada, as part of a tour, starting in 2020. For more information, please visit: www.OpenP.it.

Richard’s Tire Tips

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition. Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

Crossing back over the creek to where the actual trail is

nternational Falls. You’ve probably seen the signs, but have you gone for the hike yet? If not, what are you waiting for? Just past the Fraser border crossing, it’s a pretty chill adven-

ture you can easily do enroute to Skagway. Shortly after you pass Canadian customs (you will see a rest stop on the left, with the green outhouses), take the next pullout on the right. There’s a big

avalanche warning sign and usually some cars parked there. From the parking area, head to the left and down a steep hill. There are a series of four ropes set up to help you make your way down safely. Cross the river at the bottom, which, depending on the season, will be ankle-deep or up to your knees. There are small stones from one side to the other that you can try to make your way across, to stay dry, but the day we went was roasting hot, so I trampled right into the water, without hesitation, accepting wet feet and welcoming a little cool down. Once across the water, follow the trail up and to your right and stay on the right side of the river. We, of course, immediately went the wrong way, which we realized after we’d crossed more water and were mid-boulder climbing, which conveniently gave us a great view of the well-worn trail across a field

International Falls ... cont’d within three hours. The hike itself is not challenging; just beware of the first hill down if you aren’t okay with heights or a bit of climbing ... beyond that you’re in the clear. Pack some water, snacks and get out there before the snow starts flying. Don’t forget your passport as you’ll have to come back through customs. My only regrets are forgetting sun screen, not wearing a bathing suit to jump in one of the pools; oh, and how many years it took me to realize this adventure is so awesome and so easily accessible.

It may look like warm Caribbean water but it’s very much not p

and a set of falls from us. Back on track with the actual path, we passed the sequence of waterfalls and pools, each more striking than the last, that make up International Falls. This is one of those adventures you can make as long or as short as you want. The scenery from the top of the falls is 360 degrees of breathtaking. You don’t need to go far to feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, even though the highway is right there. If you want to continue, keep heading back away from the road and a little to the left. The path becomes less obvious the farther back you go. We were on it one minute and unable to spot it the next, but as we continued we stumbled upon it once more

(though there’s a chance we’re just really bad at following trails!). As we wandered farther, we found smaller water crossings, patches of snow and eventually reached a ridge with a spectacular view of glaciers and the valley that hosts the Chilkoot. Even with a slight detour in the beginning, taking our time mozying and admiring glaciers, with snacks in hand, we were back to the car

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Shredded-potato and onion frittata

M

y fridge is always a bit on the sad and empty side. I’d rather have to get a bit creative with empty cupboards than to risk ingredients going slimy in

my crisper. Potatoes and onions are mercifully long-lasting, and it’s always good to have a few (non-canned) staples floating around. A frittata is basically a baked omelette; and this version, filled with grated potatoes and soft onions, is incredibly good tucked into a sandwich with lots of mayo. It’s surprisingly good at room temperature, too, which makes it

Shredded-potato and onion frittata ... cont’d METHOD

1

Melt butter in a medium-sized non-stick skillet, over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the shredded potato and cook, tossing often until bits begin to brown, about 8 minutes. Season potato-onion mixture with salt and pepper.

2

Toss potato and onions one last time, then pour beaten eggs over potato mixture. Using a rubber spatula, bring the edges of the frittata to the center, then

pan is now facing up. Garnish with sour cream or greek yogurt.

You want the eggs on the top of the frittata to be just a tiny bit runny

The sun never sets on the Whitehorse Rapids

The Whitehorse Rapids soccer teams (Saturdays at the CGC) are serious about playing and serious about having fun by Andy Todd enjoy stroking the ball around scoring wonderful goals. Throw in a few Australians, a soupcon of Africans and a dash of Asians, and you have a recipe for success. The Rapids has evolved over the years, from its roots in late-night games, in cold school gyms, to its current home at the Canada Games Centre, with games played on Saturday mornings. The Rapids has also been responsible for a very successful travelling team, and they host a huge invitational co-ed tournament in the spring.

T

he 2018–19 Whitehorse Rapids over-35 soccer season kicks off at the end of September, bringing together a collection of expats and non-hockey-playing Canadians in one homogenous mix. When I first arrived in the Yukon, from England, there weren’t many things I recognized from home— gone were cricket and rugby, replaced by baseball and hockey. The CBC replaced the BBC. Rain was replaced by short freezing-cold days. However, the “beautiful game” survived, taken up by a band of brothers recruited from the four corners of the globe.

Components that make the Rapids special Age seems to have no meaning; if you are willing and able, there is a place for you. The league youngsters are just 35 when the league starts. They gambol around the pitch without a care in the world, while the older players all wonder if this game is their last ... but this is the essence of the league: one superstar cannot rule a game; a successful team plays well together and includes all members of the squad. The age gap between

the youngest and oldest player is around 30 years (some players play like their age, while some you wouldn’t believe their age even if you read their birth certificates).

Experienced and ready to play When chatting to some of the players and asking what soccer they had before arriving here, there is a sprinkling of university players. Some played as a kid then played other sports before deciding that soccer was their one true love; others said I just thought it might be fun. There is also the mystery for some of the players— where legend and myth become reality, “I heard so and so played professional in Germany, or someone told me that fella was part of the Manchester United youth team with Beckham.” The truth is never really known, although embellishment of my skills has always been taken with a huge grain of salt.

Players from around the world There is a merging of different styles and ideals. The Europeans like the game played with a certain element of physicality, while the fleet-footed Latin Americans

The league today … There are currently five teams in the league, with up to 12 players on a roster, but there is always room for more players as the league looks to increase the number of teams. Games are around 50 minutes each (split into two halves), played on indoor turf. The season begins as the last hint of summer disappear—it drives on through the cold winter months, taking a break for Christmas, before winding up to its playoff crescendo in February. Fun, fair and competitive is the motto for the league, but come the playoffs, everyone is very serious about lifting the trophy: every sinew is strained, reserve expanses of energy are galvanized, mistakes are scrutinized and goals are fondly remembered in the stands after the game. Whitehorse, like Canada, is a very diverse place, and I would advise all newcomers to the town, looking for some small part of home, to come to the Canada Games Centre and watch the Rapids play. You may realize that it is a very small piece of home, but nonetheless anyone interested in being part of the team is more than welcome to join the fun and to play for as long as the body holds up.

Jim Brown takes the ball out of his end as Giuliano Rayo (left) moves to defend in 2016 Andy Todd is a Englishman who has been part of the Whitehorse soccer scene since he arrived eight years ago.

Grey Matters with Beverly Brazier

Ode to Nellie I

f you have a glass or cup of something handy, get it ready. At the end of this piece we’re going to raise a glass to a woman named Nellie. You might want to get a handful of penny candy too … you’ll see why. Nellie and her husband (whose first name I never knew) ran a small corner store when I was a child. In my home town of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, there were three stores like hers, but the other two were on the “other side of the tracks,” and so, we, on the south side, all went to Nellie’s. The sign coming into Sioux always said “Population 2,300” (so you get an idea of the size of the place). The store was called, simply, Nellie’s. All the kids in our neighbourhood knew exactly when she was open, and what kind of mood her husband was in at any given time. You did not want to be in the store when he was in a foul mood. It’s only in my adult years that I have thought about Nellie and what she meant to us as children. She didn’t have kids of her own, and I don’t know how old she was at that time. She seemed ancient, but then so did my mom. A tight curly perm, her hair dyed some kind of red-blonde. An everpresent apron, and glasses that slid down her nose as she wiped our grimy handprints off the counter. For kids, the big draw to Nellie’s was the candy counter. It was right there—the first thing you saw when you opened the door

and walked in. I can still smell the place: fresh coffee, stale cigarette smoke (everyone smoked everywhere then) and cinnamon buns. But for us, it was all about the candy counter. So many kinds of penny candy: jawbreakers, licorice whips, double bubble, wax lips and little bottles made of wax with some sort of foul liquid inside. Spearmint leaves, marshmallow strawberries, cinnamon hearts, sponge toffee. There were also some candies for which we had a name I will not repeat now (and shouldn’t have then, either). Today, we’d call them licorice babies. It was common wisdom among the neighbourhood kids that there were two kinds of licorice babies: boys and girls. Not only that, but what you wanted was the boys. Why? Well, everyone knew that way you got more candy. (Don’t ask.) They were all exactly the same, of course, but we believed you got more if you ordered the boys. Picture this: we’d go into the store, nickels in grubby hands, and say, “Licorice babies, please. All boys.” Nellie would make a show of picking through them, sorting the boys from the girls and, straight-faced, put them in the little paper bags. Ice cream cones came in two sizes: the five-cent cone was small and pointed at the bottom. (I loved to bite the bottom off and suck the melting ice cream through the full length of the cone.) The ten-cent cone was a distant dream for us, but we knew

what they looked like—larger and squat, with a flat bottom. Marilyn Johnson, a big girl, used to get one and set it flat on the tabletop (yellow mottled formica) in the café, letting it melt till the cream dripped down the side. Nellie always had three kinds of ice cream in her freezer: vanilla, chocolate and one other. That third flavour changed every week. The truck came in on Tuesday morning. Word would spread through the neighbourhood like germs through a daycare—Nellie has rainbow! That’s the one that got us whining for a nickel at home, and running to the store. Banana was another favourite. Maple walnut elicited a groan from us all. Disgusting. A decidedly adult taste, apparently. Nellie probably ordered it for precisely that reason. I was 10 years old in 1964, and the Beatles had just hit it big in North America. At 10, I didn’t know much about the music, but I did know that all the big girls were fans, so I was too. We didn’t have a television then, so I had to read movie magazines that were left on the tables at Nellie’s. Nellie ordered in Beatles bubble gum cards. Two cards in a pack, featuring pictures of the Fab Four, and a slab of what was supposed to be “gum” on top. Mom said I was not allowed to waste money on that, and I assume my friends’ moms said the same, because we picked through fields and ditches and the yard behind the seaplane dock, looking for pop bottles. We

The first thing you saw when you entered Nellie’s store in Sioux Lookout, Ontario was the candy counter took them in, not washed, to Nellie, who accepted them and gave us credit for them until we had enough for Beatles cards. Susan, who lived at the foot of our hill, went through a stealing stage. She would wait until Nellie was distracted and, fast as anything, her arm would move into the case of chocolate bars. I was alternately awed and shocked. I know that Nellie quietly called her parents and they solved it somehow, without drawing unnecessary attention or embarrassing her in front of us and the others in the store. To all the “Nellies” in the

world, and especially our Nellie, I say thank you and thank you again ... for good memories, for gentle understanding of little people, for a genuine service to our corner of the world, and even for more than my share of cavities. Wherever you are, may your life be as sweet as you helped make ours. Beverly Brazier is the ordained minister at Whitehorse United Church. 6pm – Three Identical Strangers New York, 1980: three complete strangers accidentally discover that they are identical triplets, separated at birth. The 19-year-olds’ joyous reunion catapults them to international fame, but it also unlocks an extraordinary and disturbing secret that goes beyond their own lives – and could transform our understanding of human nature forever. Dir. Tim Wardle, 2018, USA, 96 min. 8pm – Sorry To Bother You Where Jordan Peele’s 2017 Get Out skewered liberalism and race in America, Boots Riley widens the net in his absurdist comedy satire by dropping America’s race relations into a pond muddied with celebrity, labour and capitalism. In an alternate reality of present-day Oakland, CA, telemarketer Cassius Green (Get Out’s Lakeith Stansfield) finds himself in a macabre universe after he discovers a magical key that leads to material glory. As Green’s career begins to take off, his friends and co-workers are on strike to protest against corporate oppression. Dir. Boots Riley, 2018, USA, 110 min. The new Guild season starts Thursday with a Canadian-written black comedy classic, Lawrence and Holloman he Guild Theatre will launch its 2018–19 season this week with Lawrence and Holloman, a darkly hilarious two-hander by award-winning Canadian playwright Morris Panych. First produced at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre in 1998, it later inspired a film by the same name, starring Ben Cotton and Daniel Arnold, which drew mixed critical and box office response. In Panych’s original, Lawrence (played in the Guild version by Adam MacDougall) is an ebullient, eternally-optimistic salesman, whom director Brian Fidler likens to a character from TV’s Mad Men series. “He’s a bit of a chauvinist, completely politically incorrect, and oblivious to the fact there could be anything wrong with his misogyny and political incorrectness,” Fidler explained. “Lawrence has a lot of things going for him. His work is going well, he’s about to get married, he’s got a few chicks on the side. He’s a very confident, ‘everythingis-going-his-way’ kind of guy.” Enter Holloman (Brandon Wicke), the yin to Lawrence’s yang. “Holloman is the exact opposite—a nerd who works in the finance department and is not doing so well in his life. These two men meet up, and Holloman sort

21

of gets a focus on what he wants to do.” [If the character’s name summons up images of T.S. Eliot’s poetry, it is not by coincidence.] As the relationship between the two develops, Holloman grows increasingly resentful of Lawrence’s condescending attitude toward him. Lawrence’s life soon begins to unravel, eventually resembling that of the biblical Job, whose faith in God was tested by everything from loss of his family and livelihood to an attack of festering boils. “The character of Lawrence is tested time and time again, but he remains true to himself. Everything just falls apart around him, but he remains optimistic,” Fidler said. For the audience, the response might provide a touch of schadenfreude, the perverse pleasure sometimes derived from the suffering of someone who deserves to be knocked down a peg or two. But what is Holloman’s attitude, and what role might he have played in his friend’s undoing? Fidler declined to be specific, except to suggest that the catand-mouse plot ends (in true Eliot style) not with a bang, but a whimper. Although Panych’s script was a product of the 1990s, Fidler has

conceived this production as an early 1960s-style whodunit, complete with a spy/espionage soundtrack. Fidler admits to having personal reasons for choosing this piece to open his third season as the Guild’s artistic director. “I’ve always loved this play, and I’ve been looking for an opportunity either to be in it, or to produce it,” he said. “His writing is super witty and very clever. In front of the right audience, there’s a laugh a line, and it moves really, really quickly. It’s just blindingly clever—to my taste, anyway,” he added. “Now that I get to hold the reins and do the programming for the Guild, this was the perfect opportunity. It was a combination of loving the play and knowing there was the actor base in town to pull it off.” In fact, he admitted, casting the show involved some hard decisions. “There were some super-talented people who came out, and I could have cast it a number of different ways, but these two (MacDougall and Wicke) really stood out.” Lawrence and Holloman has its official opening on Thursday, September 27 at 8 p.m., with a preview performance the previous evening. It runs until Saturday, Oc-

s the Guild Theatre’s artistic director, Brian Fidler faced some challenges finding the right balance for the four shows he had picked for the 2018–19 season— each of which he considered a classic in its own right. He chose to follow the black comedy opener with something more substantial: French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1944 masterpiece, No Exit. “It made sense to have something that an audience can really sink their teeth into. It was also a casting thing. I think we have great potential to cast that show up here.” The play concerns three strangers locked together for eternity in a small chamber in Hell. There are no instruments of torture, but they become each other’s tormentors. Hence, Sartre’s famous dictum that, “Hell is other people.” Fidler sees parallels with current times. “We’re stuck in this nightmare where we don’t have any say in the world we’re living in and who’s running it. But hopefully, it’s not for eternity,” Fidler joked. No Exit will run from November 29 through December 15, under the direction of Vancouverite Genevieve Fleming, who has previously directed the play’s French-language version, Huis Clos. “We start out a little dark, then we move right into the light in the new year.” From January 24 until February 9, the black-box theatre will feature Christopher Durang’s 2012 comic hit, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a riff on Anton Chekhov’s familiar themes of small lives in small towns. “I was casting around for a Chekhov piece, because there’s a certain portion of our audience that likes Shakespeare and likes Chekhov. I read Vanya, and I thought it was hilarious and perfect.” Brian Cochrane will spearhead the show in his second directorial stint at the Guild. The season will close in April (4–20) with The Drowsy Chaperone, an all-Canadian take on the 1920s musical comedy that took Broadway by storm in 2006 and captured five Emmy awards on its way to worldwide theatre acclaim. “It’s always been on my bucket list of shows, and I think it’s a great challenge to try and do this big, jazzy show in the Guild, in that small space.” Former Whitehorse dancer/choreographer Jessica Hickman will direct, with musical direction by her husband, Brooke Maxwell, the musical brain behind Atomic Vaudeville’s wildly popular Ride the Cyclone.

riving to Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T. (located on Kugmallit Bay of the Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean), is no big deal. Canadians have been doing it for many years on the annual winter ice roads that used to run down the Mackenzie Delta, from Inuvik, to the frozen open ocean. Indeed, my three grandchildren, aged six, eight and 10 at the time, enjoyed the Last Ice Road in March, 2018, in -30s temps to beat the crowds when the Inuvik– Tuk “Highway” opened to the pub-

lic with the spring thaw of 2018. The official opening in November 2017 was just a legal formality and photo op. Here is how that March trip went, with nightly campsites:

These pingos are located near Tuktoyaktuk When I asked the kids to relate the most memorable highlight of their unique journey on the historical last ice road, they replied with great enthusiasm: “We got a hotel room in Inuvik and one bed was just for jumping on like a trampoline. It was awesome.” And I did write them a little poem for good luck on their first trip as High Arctic explorers:

An Arctic Shamrock

Aye, tis at last St. Paddy’s morning And time fer Grandpa’s final warning: If ye dig beneath the snows of Tuk Yer sure to find the green good luck Of a shamrock on the Beaufort shore Where a shiny black raven quoths: “Nevermore!” Or, perhaps; “Bingo! We’re on a Pingo!”

Everybody who lives north of the provinces has their favourite place in the Yukon and mine has always been the Dempster, since getting so intimate with it as a young man during construction back in the mid ’70s. There is something about building a road which is very similar to raising a child. You feel like part of the creation of it and know it on a level much deeper than simply driving on it as an off-duty or aging tourist. You also know where all the warts are, which sections were tough or easy to build and the subsequent construction stories/memories of things never seen before or since. For example, the constant presence of the aurora borealis on every 10-hour shift, day or night, since there is little or no competing sunlight in winter. The extraordinary became a daily routine. Once, while driving back to Dawson for days off (three weeks on, one off), we got caught in the middle of the migrating Porcupine caribou herd and it took four hours to go four miles while gently nudging does out of the way with the bumper. We were right in the cencont’d on page 23 ...

PHOTO: Bering Land Bridge National Preserve via Wikimedia Commons ter of the herd with the does and calves. The bucks travel on the outside in a circular formation as protection against predators, mostly wolf packs that follow behind and take the injured, ill and aged. There is no room to do it here, but I could name every section of the road from the bridge over the upper Klondike River, 25 miles outside of Dawson, to Inuvik, which is still the northern terminus of the Dempster. The In-Tuk is a separate 137-kilometre highway ending with a little peninsula where you can get a photo of your rig with the Arctic Ocean on three sides, and maybe a couple of pingos in the background. Tuk is to pingos what the Klondike is to gold nuggets or “Home, Sweet Home.” Pingo is an Inuvialuktun word meaning “small hill.” The scientific term is hydrolaccolith, which defines as “a mound of earthcovered ice found in the Arctic

and subarctic that can reach up to 70 metres (230 ft) in height and up to 600 m (2,000 ft) in diameter,” according to the NWT government, which advertises Tuk’s best day trip to be a hike to “the top of nearby 49-metrehigh Ibyuk Pingo, the secondtallest pingo in the world, which grows two centimetres per year.” Tuktoyaktuk has the highest concentration of pingos in Canada, with some 1,350 examples. Pingo National Landmark protects eight of them, including Ibyuk. Alaska is home to the Kadleroshilik Pingo, the highest known pingo in the world. Other places with pingos include Nunavut and the Yukon, Greenland, Siberia and the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. Recent estimates indicate that more than 11,000 pingos exist on Earth, with more than 6,000 alone in northern Asia. They are artesian vents com-

mon to Arctic permafrost, which work just like a volcano, except the cone is formed by freezing water rather than cooling magma. When they thaw and melt, for whatever reasons, they leave a hole and a pot-lake (also called a pingo) and can be found anywhere that was glaciated in the various ice ages. They were and are popular with Inuvialuit hunters for spotting caribou on land and beluga whales on the ocean. Until 1950, Tuktoyaktuk was known as Port Brabant, since its founding as a Hudson Bay post in 1928, which attracted hunters and turned it into a community. Then it became the first Indigenous location in Canada to drop its colonial name for the traditional, which translates, in this case, as “looks like a caribou,” which is exactly what you would expect to hear from a hunter on the top of a pingo on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. The Dempster was the first road in North America to cross the Arctic Circle. It has to be the premier adventure travel road in Canada, especially now and in the future, since you can finally drive to the Arctic Ocean on an all-weather, year-round land route. You still get to cross the Peel and Mackenzie riv-

ers on summer ferries and winter ice roads, but that’s it for delays and obstacles now that the delta ice road is bypassed and obsolete. Believe it or not, now that it is possible, the big thing visitors are doing on their first visit to the Arctic Ocean is dipping their big toes into it, which has become Tuk’s answer to Dawson City’s Sourtoe Cocktail; but the more adventurous are going for a quick swim, while some of the younger and dumber are skinny-dipping—a photo op for short-sighted elders, if ever there was one. Purchasing a double-meaning T-shirt also seems to be mandatory, such as “TUK U”. I wanted to find one saying: “I got Tukked on a Pingo” but was not successful. They also have two music festi-

The scenic Dempster Highway is the first leg of the drive to “Tuk”

vals: the Beluga Jamboree (midApril) and the Pingo Music Festival (mid-August). And it is inevitable that a Winter Solstice “Whoopup” will develop some time in the future for those who find Christmas cute, quaint and outdated. We’ll leave that one to the next generation. This one was happy to finally dip a big toe in Canada’s third ocean. Now we just have to kiss a sleeping grizzly bear and get lucky in a tippy canoe to be truly worthy of being called Canadian. Whitehorse–Tuk: 1,370 kilometres, one way.

ocated on the northeastern corner of Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Quttinirpaaq National Park is Canada’s northernmost national park. Until recently it was virtually inaccessible to your average earthling. Quttinirpaaq just became a bit more reachable with the completion of a partnership project between Parks Canada and Google Street View, which aims to increase access to remote locations in Canada through Google Street View. Now that the park has gone online, Canadians can experience the extreme North with the click of a mouse. “There’s a sense that Canadians and the world, as a whole, are becoming more aware of the Arctic,” said Emma Upton, park manager for Quttinirpaaq National Park. “It’s a kind of recognition and it’s an opportunity to bring a piece of the North to the South.” The project for Quttinirpaaq started in 2015. The crew was on the ground for five days in the summer of 2016. The content was reviewed in the summer of 2017, and all of the content was published in October 2017. Upton spent a day guiding a crew that was photographing Quttinirpaaq with an S 360 Google Trekker Camera, in 2016. “It took a fair bit of planning to get to that latitude. It was a bit mind-boggling. “The terrain isn’t the easiest to walk. A lot of it is tundra or rocky landscape, and the cameraman was so excited to be there that he was getting distracted,” she said with a laugh. “We picked spots to photograph that we know are of interest.”

A FUN SPACE Starts at

Walking the streets of Resolute Bay, a Parks Canada team member puts the hamlet offices on the map She said that while the unpredictable weather was a concern, at first, everything worked out. “We were so fortunate ... everything arrived on time, the sun started to shine on the day that the crew showed up. Ellesmere Island that week was especially spectacular.” Upton has been in Nunavut since 2014. She began her north-

ern journey with Parks Canada in 2001, at the Yukon’s Kluane National Park, and sees the Quttinirpaaq project as one of the highlights of her career. “It was really fun to plan something way ahead of time and engage communities,” said Upton.

The communities of Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord are the gateway to Quttinirpaaq National Park, and the participation of local residents in the project, encouraged by Parks Canada, sets it apart from other Google Maps endeavours. Grise Fiord has a population of roughly 130, and Resolute Bay has a population of roughly 200.

Advance screenings of the Google Maps launch were held in both communities so that residents could give their input before the information went online. Organizers said that there were about 40 residents present at the advance launch in Grise Fiord and only slightly fewer in attendance at Resolute Bay, which is a big turnout taking population size into account. “Residents were very very excited about this. It really put the geography into perspective, and we got lots of positive feedback. It was very meaningful,” said Upton. Upton’s hope is that more people will be drawn to visit Quttinirpaaq, once they’ve had a taste of it through Google Maps. “Although it can be difficult to get here, we want to get

Two Parks Canada team members taking a break in the MacDonald River Valley with the Google Trekker people dreaming about visiting, increase the appreciation that people have for Canada’s North, and change some of the preconceived notions that people have about the North.” Quttinirpaaq is the farthest north that Google Street View has been, to date. Phil McComiskey—partnering, engagement and communications officer with the Parks Canada Nunavut Field Unit—thinks that all Canadians should consider experiencing Nunavut. “It is a part of our country [that] few Canadians are

aware of, and even fewer go to see/experience.” Yukoners shouldn’t write off a visit to Nunavut just because we live in the North, either. “The territory of Nunavut is very different from the Yukon, in culture and language, climate, and history,” he said. For those with an interest in visiting, 25,000 Aeroplan points can get you to Resolute Bay from anywhere in Canada. If you can’t afford to fly but love to cook, twice a year the Chef at the Top of the World project invites Canadians to express an interest in being a camp cook for a couple of weeks while experiencing the Far North. “Heading to Nunavut and Quttinirpaaq means getting a better grasp of how vast Canada’s North really is—we live in a big country,” said McComiskey. “Quttinirpaaq is just beautiful. It’s remote, vast, and stark. “Evidence of human activity, dating back thousands of years, is scattered throughout the landscape ... it’s hard to miss when walking on the land! And, for all its starkness, it is surprisingly rich in flora and fauna.” Established as a national park, in the year 2000, with the creation of Nunavut Territory, Qut-

tinirpaaq means “top of the world” in Inuktitut. Covering 37,775 square kilometres (14,585 square miles), it’s the secondbiggest park in Canada, after Wood Buffalo National Park. It’s the second most-northerly in the world after Northeast Greenland National Park. More information about the collaboration between Google Street View and Parks Canada, as well as other sites that have been captured around the country, can be found at www.pc.gc. ca/en/multimedia/cartes-maps. Finton said that he’s getting a chance to share ideas and learn from professionals in the field through workshops and guest speakers. “Overall it’s just inspired me. Before this I hadn’t really thought at all about space or anything like that, and [I’m]

just being able to see that I can actually have a part to play.” Finton said that now is the time to get involved as access to these types of projects become more accessible to Yukoners. “My parents would never have had an opportunity like this.” He said it’s important to take advantage of chances like this when they come up and that people don’t need any kind of expertise to get involved. “Don’t be afraid to come show up to the meetings,” said Finton. “We’re really starting with the basics, so we’ve been doing tutorials and workshops for the people who are involved in the course, just to kind of get people all up to speed and learning about technology.” As the project gears up for the winter, Finton said that the team is working on conceptualizing a project that will showcase the Yukon. “It would be really cool to put a Yukon spin on space,” said Finton. He said that exactly how this is achieved this depends on factors like the orbit of the International Space Station and the payload of the satellite, “I think we have a lot

A CubeSat is a tiny spacecraft that is a 10 cm cube or possibly multiples of that size. The device will be taken to the International Space Station by a supply rocket in 2020 or 2021, and then ejected off into space to undertake its mission for as long as it can function, typically three to 12 months, and then it falls back to Earth and burns up.

of potential for creativity there.” Ripples are being felt in the community, and one local business has already jumped on-board with CubeSat. “I’ve had a passion for everything space-related since I was a youngster [...] so when I read that the Yukon had its own CubeSat program, I looked for a way I could contribute,” said Glenn Piwowar, who sits on the board of directors at YuKonstruct. YuKonstruct is a community workspace that blends machine shops, workshops and studios as a way for Yukoners to share resources. Piwowar said that the workspace is developing a partnership with Yukon College, and when it became apparent some members of the CubeSat project team could use some technical training, they offered to pitch in with facilities and instructors. Workshops have included handson tutorials in basic soldering skills, an introduction to microcontrollers and more open-ended sessions. “The objective is to give team members an opportunity to learn some electronics skills and, at the same time, quickly learn

to collaborate in solving problems or achieving an objective with what they have learned.” The YukonSat project is following a three-year timeline from start to launch, and students are welcome to join at any time throughout the project. The students are starting to work on their mission objective—what they want the satellite to do. Once they decide on an objective, they will move into the detailed design, assembly and testing phases. Local mentors, as well as the Canadian Space Agency and partners at University of Alberta and Aurora College are training the students to do this work. Anyone who wants to be involved in the YukonSat project can contact MissionControl@yukoncollege.yk.ca. High school and post-secondary students can join the team, community members can help out as mentors, and outreach activities can be organized through Yukon College in communities, schools or other groups that are interested.

he Yukon will be launching a satellite into orbit for the first time, as part of a Canadian Space Agency-led project. Yukon College students are in the conceptual stage of their first-ever space mission. “A Yukon satellite will expand the depth of knowledge we have in the territory and will hopefully lead to other space-related projects in the future,” said Alison Anderson, P.Eng. and principal investigator for the CubeSat project at Yukon College. According to the Canadian Space Agency, the Canadian CubeSat project lets students from each province and territory design, build, launch and operate their own miniature satellite. “The successful completion of this project will be another example of the amazing abilities of Yukoners,” said Anderson. She said that there is still room for people to sign up and benefit from the experience. “Don’t be afraid to get involved! No skills are required—just enthusiasm and the willingness to learn.” The wider community is invited to get involved, too. “We would love to see local businesses offer expertise to help guide the students and possibly offer the use of any specialty equipment,” said Anderson.
