he pre-Christmas season will soon be underway here in the Klondike, actually beginning a few days before this piece can see print. It’s a season of bazaars and open houses that lead up to the actual holidays. It begins with the oldest and largest of the bazaars, the Little Blue Daycare Christmas Bazaar. This will fill the gym and ancillary room at the Robert Service School, in Dawson, on November 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a fundraiser for the daycare, so there is a fee for table space, but the selection is wide open beyond that. There are always organizations looking for members and crafts, catalogue items looking for buyers, lots of baked goods of all kinds, 50/50 raffle tickets and a cakewalk event for the grad class. Santa holds court on the stage and sits with both eager and frightened children, for family pictures. It’s a meeting place as well as a market, and there’s a lot of visiting going on. The next Saturday (November 24), the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture stages its Christmas

Art and Craft Fair in the ballroom on the second floor. This will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the first hour being an Accessible Time for seniors. Tables need to have been reserved in advance as this one raises funds to support the ODD Gallery downstairs. The focus here is on locallyproduced cards, apparel, photographs, paintings, pottery, glass items and the work of resident creators. Its motto is “Shop local for one-of-a-kind, handmade gifts by local artists and makers!” There is also Christmas-themed music provided by local musicians. The town used to hold an open house buffet-style event, but now it hosts a family-focussed Celebration of Lights, based around the picnic shelter in the Waterfront Park. There is singing, music, a walk and run event with a couple of pseudo-Santas, and the official ignition of the park’s Christmas lights. The date for this isn’t set yet, but November 24 is the current favourite. December 7 (a Friday) will see the second running of the Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF) Winter

Bizarre (note the spelling). This is not a craft fair, though DCMF merch will be available in the KIAC ballroom during the 4 p.m. to midnight time frame. The hours will be spent as a “night of live music, games, auctions, food, drinks, karaoke, live radio, a photo booth, and a general feeling of good cheer!” It is a DCMF fundraiser, so bring along some cash. The next day (Saturday, December 8) will see the Last Minute Bazaar, which is held annually at the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in (TH) Community Hall. There is a strong focus on First Nations craft work at this event, but other things do appear on the tables. Not yet determined at this writing are the annual open house events at the Dawson City Museum and the RCMP detachment. These are always well-attended and replete with good food. The last big event on the calendar before Christmas Eve is the TH Community Dinner, to be held on December 15 at the Robert Service cont’d on page 3 ...

It’s beginning to look a lot like (you know) ... cont’d School. It’s a buffet-style event that usually includes the TH community awards. Sometimes this is also the night for the annual Boat Parade, during which wildly-decorated vessels are towed around the town, but it works better for both events when they are separated. There is usually a performance of the Nutcracker, featuring the principle cast from the Northern Lights School of Dance and some local performers. There’s no date for this yet, but it’s usually a Sunday event, and last year was Dec.

ukon-based writer Joanna Lilley has published her first novel, Worry Stones, after 17 years of working on it. “I wasn´t working on it every day, during that time. There were periods when I put it aside.” She wrote poems and short stories instead. During the past years, she published two collections of poetry and one book of short stories. “Getting Worry Stones published is a dream come true for me,” Lilley said. “I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to write a novel, and have made many failed attempts over the decades. I started writing Worry Stones 17 years ago and was over the moon when Ronsdale Press accepted it for publication last year.” She said that fear of failure sometimes became too much for her during the writing process. “Who was I to think I could be a novelist? In Britain, the class system and centuries of great literature are stifling constraints.” Lilley is originally from the UK and studied creative writing in Scotland before she immigrated to Canada with her husband in 2006. “Immigrating to Canada helped me to come ‘out of the closet’ as a writer and start to meet and work with other writers more.” Set in Nunavut, England and Scotland, Worry Stones is about Jenny Ross, a young British art historian who hasn’t seen her parents for eight years, not since they joined a cult in the remote Scottish Highlands. When Jenny finds out her mother has had a stroke, she’s forced to decide whether or not to abandon her research in Iqaluit and rush to her mother’s bedside. The title is quite unique, and when asked what Worry Stones means, Lilley said: “The title comes from the stones that the main character, Jenny, collects when she’s anxious about things, especially when her family is at

Joanna Lilley (left) is pictured with Barbara Langhorst at McNally Robinson bookstore in Saskatoon in October. They launched their debut novels together last month in Saskatoon, Regina and at St. Peter’s College in Muenster odds. She develops a habit of picking up stones she finds on the beach, or on her wanderings, and taking them home. She finds it comforting to hold them and feel their shapes. The stones also link to her artistic frustrations as she grows older.” So what is next in Joanna Lilley´s writing career? “I’m currently working on another novel, which is about a woman who’s successful in her career but keeps making mistakes, in her personal life, that hurt other people in serious ways. And I’ll soon be starting to work on edits to my next poetry book, which is a collection of poems about extinct animals and is being published by Turnstone Press in spring 2020.” Lilley just came back from giv-

ing readings in Saskatoon and Regina and is looking forward to a reading in Whitehorse. As well as a reading by Lilley, there will be readings from local authors Ellen Bielawski, Patti Flather and Lily Gontard. All four authors are in a writing group together and are working on novels. Poet Jamella Hagan will host the event. The launch of Worry Stones takes place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 29, at Baked Café.

t’s quite amazing how many people (if they admit it) have had a potentially near-death experience in the outdoors. It’s rarely a plane crash or a boat-sinking experience. Actually, these situations are often due to inadequate planning or mistakes. It’s just three years ago that four really experienced outdoorsmen went to shore in October to glass for sheep on the mountainside. Nobody tied the boat to the shore, and when they looked around, the boat had drifted out onto the lake where it was too far too retrieve by swimming in the ice-cold water. They spent two nights on the shore with whatever they had on them when they got out of the boat. All the survival gear, food, shelter stuff, etc., was still in the adrift boat. The next morning and the next day, they could see the boat where it had grounded on the far shore. True survival equipment does not take up very much room, but it needs to be with you wherever you are because you never know when things will spoil and you are stuck. Your survival and shelter-building kit need to be with you and not back in the pack you dropped off during the stalk or in the skimmer, or in the boat. It’s quite amazing the number of everyday things that can save

your life in a shelter-building, life-saving situation. How about a large plastic garbage or a leaf bag? Neither takes up much space if it’s still new in its factory-folded condition. Even if it’s used, pulling/ squeezing it through your clenched fist takes all the air out of it and it will fit in your shirt pocket. A piece of drywall vapour barrier, about six feet by eight feet, folds up pretty small and is extremely tough and weatherproof. Think about all the kids tents you saw at last year’s garage sales. Many of them have separate rain flys that fold up into “nothing” and are easy to pack. If there is no fly, even the main tent piece will fold small and save your life in a survival situation. There are also many shelter tarps on the market and lots of lightweight waterproof tarps in various sizes. The one you get should be big enough for an emergency shelter but also small/light enough that you will agree to carry it all the time on you, not in some distant pack or survival kit. A tarp, sheet of plastic or garbage bag will work on its own, but a method to tie it over you is a better idea. Dental floss is extremely tough and takes no space even when in a full spool. Paracord (parachute cord) is good, in a quantity of three- to six-foot

Log lengths or stove Hurlburt lengths, we can take care of you. Enterprises In fact, we’ll even Inc. deliver right to your location. • Beetle-killed spruce from Haines Junction, quality guaranteed • Single & emergency half cord delivery • You cut and you pick-up available • Everything over 8” split • Prices as low as $245 per cord • Scheduled or next day delivery

We have more than firewood, we can supply wood processing equipment you need like splitters and chippers.

A shelter tarp or even a garbage bag can do in a pinch for emergency shelter lengths, to frame the shelter roof amongst the nearby branches. There is no excuse to be unprepared and, here in the North, being unprepared can be fatal.

Searching for a way out

Sartre’s No Exit was written in French as Huis Clos, translated as “In Camera”

The Guild Theatre production of J-P Sartre’s philosophical play, No Exit, opens on Thursday, November 29 by Ken Bolton in this adaptation by American translator Paul Bowles. “Each character, at least at the beginning, is really clinging to their constructed identity, which can include society, or values of etiquette and courtesy. As they circle around each other, we see a gradual stripping-off of these facades,” Fleming said. “So, they take their masks off, peel those layers back and, as one of the characters says, they’re naked as the day they were born. Basically, all of their secrets and the things that are ugly about them are laid bare.” Cradeau tries to convince the others to “stop playing the game and circling like a merry-goround,” Fleming said, yet even when faced with an opportunity to escape he is incapable of doing so. The play is firmly rooted in Sartre’s existentialist belief that freedom of choice means taking responsibility for one’s actions. “These are characters who are refusing to take responsibility for their actions and their behaviour toward other people, and making other people make choices for them,” Fleming explained. “They definitely air their dirty laundry, but I don’t know if that

necessarily comes with acceptance of responsibility or the culpability of it.” Sartre wrote No Exit in the middle of the Second World War, when France was under Nazi domination.

to be under German occupation,” Fleming said. Although she didn’t offer a direct comparison to current events in Europe, the U.S. or elsewhere, the director acknowledged that contemporary audiences might draw their own analogies. “There’s enough going on for us to find something to identify in the circumstances of being trapped in a situation beyond our control, or in the individual characters who come at it from different points of view and are struggling to accept those given circumstances,” she said. “I think that goes back to the things that I find interesting and engaging about the play: that we can always choose to be nasty people, but perhaps we can make a brighter choice in our everyday living.” While Sartre’s work revolves around his sometimes-complex philosophical ideas, Fleming says that alone is not playable onstage, no matter how well the actors understand it. “You still have to go for your goals and what your character wants to get out from the other character,” she explained. “A lot of time, that’s as simple as comfort, or understanding, or to get your own way. enevieve Fleming is counting on Whitehorse audiences to take in the upcoming Guild Theatre production, even if just to indulge in some cold-weather Schadenfreude. In one sense, the Vancouverbased director suggested in an interview, staging French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1944 play, No Exit, is like holding a mirror up to our own society. “We, the audience, are participating and may seem voyeuristic by watching these people tear each other down, and taking pleasure in it,” she said. “These are people who are so perfectly balanced that they can’t help wanting to claw each other’s eyes out. It’s really fun to watch other people be miserable, and escape from the chill a little bit.” Sartre’s drama revolves around three deeply flawed humans who are destined to spend eternity cooped up together after being ushered into a small room in hell by the equivalent of a hotel valet, or bellhop. The first, Vincent Cradeau (played by Jason Westover), is a wartime deserter whose execution caused his wife—to whom he had been blithely unfaithful—to die of grief. The second, Inès Serrano (Elyssia Sasaki), is a manipulative mail clerk whose sexual designs on her cousin’s wife resulted in the man’s murder. The third member of the doomed trio is Estelle Rigualt (Andrea Bols), a married society woman whose lover committed suicide after she callously drowned the couple’s child. Martina Vols plays the bellhop

little to do with the actual philosophy for them, even though they are the mouthpieces for it.” Rather than just a philosophical lecture, the dramatic tension of the play includes scenes of attempted seduction, which don’t necessarily go well for the characters involved. “Each character approaches it from different perspectives. Even though they’re in hell and they don’t eat or drink, or sleep, or need to go to the restroom, they still have these desires that we associate with being human.” Fleming grew up in an Englishspeaking family in Moncton, New Brunswick, and got her first exposure to No Exit playing the bellhop in a French-language production at Mount Allison University, in nearby Sackville. Fifteen years later, she says the atmosphere of the Whitehorse venue reminds her of the blackbox Windsor Theatre on the Mount A. campus during her undergraduate days. “I love that it’s a really contained environment. I like the audience to come in and feel the tightness of the room. I think that really serves the production.” No Exit opens at the Guild Hall on 14th Avenue on Thursday, November 29 at 8 p.m., with a preview performance the previous evening. It runs until Saturday, December 15.

Grey Matters with Lillian Nakamura Maguire

In ‘the Zone’ - Taking each day as it comes ...

Nita celebrating her 98th birthday

turned 70 this past summer. I’ve been pondering, How did I get there so soon? So what’s your stereotype of a 70-year-old “lady”? Grey hair? Yep, that’s me, and I earned every one! Wrinkles and brown splotches? Yes, plenty! A cane? Actually, walking sticks for long walks! Sitting in a rocking chair, all day, doing needlework? Definitely not me (but nothing wrong with it) … besides, can’t see much detail anymore. Did you hear about Amanda Rendall? She’s the dedicated, daily walker who, as part of her routine, cleans up litter at the Whitehorse skateboard park and visits with the skaters—something she’s been doing for close to 20 years. She has earned a special place in the hearts of the youth at the park. She’s 99. When I heard about her, I got thinking about older adults in my life … I mean much older than me, who are living vibrant and active lives in their 80s and 90s. There’s a couple in their 80s who operate, on their own, a placer mine, in Dawson, and have been doing it since they “retired” from their café business. I know several seniors and elders actively engaged in their communities. At least two First Nations Elders I know are leaders in preserving their Tlingit and Kaska culture and language.

Some baby boomers, former anti-war and civil rights activists, have continued their activism and founded many of the non-profit, advocacy, environmental and socialjustice groups in the Yukon. As baby boomers age, they will continue to be engaged and to speak out on various issues. I’m impressed by artistic women (friends and relatives in their 70s), one of whom is preparing for a major showing of her paintings, in 2019. Other 70-year-old friends continue to remain physically active in cross-country skiing, cycling in the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay, and canoeing in the Yukon River Quest. A woman who has served as a role model and inspiration for me, over the last couple of years, turned 98 in November. Nita’s got the usual aches and pains, failing hearing and vision issues, but I seldom hear a complaint from her. She lives independently. Does her own cooking, bakes the best Queen Elizabeth Cake, ever, and provides regular batches of cookies for her greatgrandson. She plays bridge, weekly, attends bingo for the social time, maintains her interest in current affairs and history and is a wonderful storyteller. She has an amazing memory for details, dates and locations and has travelled widely. She grew up in rural New Brunswick during the depression. Due to the determination of her aunt, she was able to complete her high school education and receive further training in a secretarial program. She pursued a career in the Federal Civil Service, married, raised one daughter and retired in 1985. When I asked for her advice on how to cope with turning 70 and the secret to her longevity, she said to “take each day as it comes.” Good, solid, down-to-earth advice, but at times difficult for me to follow as I try to map out my life while looking to the future. There are “Blue Zones,” communities in the world where people live longer and are healthier than anywhere else. In these communities, there is a larger percentage of healthy people living to 90 or even up to 100. Journalist Dan Buettner, in partnership with National Geographic, studied these communities and came up with the lifestyle factors that resulted in their longev-

ity. The study concluded that only about 10 per cent of their long and healthy lives was due to genes, whereas the major influence was lifestyle. The factors that Buettner found were:

1. Moving naturally

– physical activity that was built into their way of life. Walking, gardening and using hand-operated rather than mechanical tools for their yard work and housework.

2. Right Outlook – Ikigai (the term

that citizens of Okinawa, Japan, use to describe “why I wake up in the morning). Buettner concluded that having a sense of purpose adds seven extra years to one’s life. Taking time to de-stress—through prayer, having rituals to remember ancestors, and napping—were important as well.

3. Hara hachi bu – the Confucian

mantra said before an Okinawan meal, a reminder to stop eating when their stomach feels 80 per cent full. Blue Zone people eat a largely plant-based diet, with smaller portions of meat and moderate alcohol drinking at one to two glasses per day. (We’re not talking tumblers!)

4. Connect

– loved ones come first. As people age in Blue Zone communities, they gain more equity, people have a strong sense of belonging, and those who were born into or choose social circles that support healthy behaviours, live longer. No surprises. Many of these lifestyle choices are not just dependent on individual choices. Buettner found that these choices are dependent on community policies and systems that support sustainable, healthy lifestyle behaviours. There’s much to consider. By the way, if any of you are rushing out to move to a Canadian Blue Zone community, there isn’t one yet … but who knows ... maybe Whitehorse?

In Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of REDRESS In early 1942, Canadian government invoked the War Measures Act. “All persons of Japanese origin” were labeled “enemy aliens”. Approximately 23,000 Japanese Canadians (75% of them were Canadian citizens) were stripped of all civil rights; their boats, farms, businesses, and houses were confiscated. They were sent to the Internment camps, to the sugar beet farms in Manitoba, to road camps, or even to prisoner-of-war camps; often families were separated. They were not allowed to return to the west coast until 1949. In 1988, the government of Canada acknowledged that its action was wrong and apologized to the Japanese Canadian community. The historic Redress was signed between the then-Prime Minister Mulroney and Art Miki, the then-president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC).

hat is one to expect when one decides to go to a Rendezvous event in Nov-

ember? It would not be strange for this thought to cross your mind as you went to check out the preliminaries for the Ultimate Lip Sync Battle. Everything seems kind of normal at the Town & Mountain Hotel, as I roll in (just after 7 p.m.). I am greeted by a jovial-looking fellow wearing a red plaid. He lets me know his name is Dashing Dan and that, if I want (for a small fee), I can get in on the preliminaries for the Ultimate Lip Sync Challenge. The Town & Mountain is handing out gift certificates for first, second and third place that night, and I could go on to win up to $750 on the Rendezvous stage. It sounds like a good deal, but I pass for the time being ... I think I want to get the lay of the land first. Over the next half hour the bar begins to fill, and though it’s not straight-up Rendezvous, I do notice the occasional garter being worn, and more than a few plaid shirts coming out. Our hostess for the evening, one Musical Marjie, takes the stage near 7:30 and lets us know things are about to get started. She reminds us of the prizes and that Dashing Dan will be taking sign-ups all evening, so it’s not too late if anyone gets a little braver as the evening rolls on. With that out of the way, she calls up the evening’s MC, “Just Stu,”—not the cleverest of Rendezvous names, but the fellow is equal-parts charming and

suave and quickly gets the crowd riled up about the first act. A local woman takes the stage, with confidence and enthusiasm. She is not just a lip syncer, but she has painted on a beard and dances as the music hits its stride. The song is Sam Hunt’s “Break Up in a Small

Eager participants on November 10 gave it their all to earn a spot in in February’s Ultimate Lip Sync

der of the evening. The night progressed as such, with Just Stu peppering the crowd with lip sync and Rendezvous trivia, as attendees worked with Musical Marjie to track down the perfect lip sync song from their collection. There were the standard shoutouts and get you excited about what’s to come. That particular evening had three big winners: Leigh, in first place (“Break Up in a Small Town”); Emily, in second place (“Rock Star”); and Gabrielle, in third place (“Mama Mia”). All three of these lovely ladies will perform at the Ultimate Lip Sync Battle on February 22, 2019, at the Kwanlin Dűn Cultural Centre. In addition to that, it’s not too late ... Rendezvous will be hosting another lip sync preliminary on November 24, back at the Town &

Town” and the crowd eats it up and showers her in applause. After that, Just Stu lets us know that the judges will be deliberating for just a moment; and while they do, they call up a Rendezvous board member to keep the crowd entertained. “Top Shelf Tyson” and his sister Jessica rock out to “Bohemian Rhapsody”; and, whereas our first contestant had talent and skill, these two had raw enthusiasm and joy. They let us know, through their performance, that you need not be a professional to come up and have a good time, and they easily set the tone for the remain-

to the sponsors, Apex Energy Services and the Town & Mountain, for putting on the show, and all in all it was a good time. Then, just when you thought this was a wrap and you’d seen everything, Rendezvous pulls out another surprise and in walks the Air North Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Can Can Line, four dancers who gave us a sneak preview of what we can expect to see in February. I would say that the lip sync prelims are a bit like a Christmas-inJuly party; it’s not really Rendezvous, but it gives you just enough of a taste to whet your appetite

Mountain. If you think you have the stage presence to go all the way, or just want a fun-filled evening with a taste of Rendezvous, go check it out (you won’t be sorry).

Do you have a tire

that you have been airing up every so often?

Skookum Asphalt Santa Breakfast ADAMS FAMILY RETAIL GROUP

Come and meet Santa and Mrs. Claus – bring your appetite for pancakes and of course your camera! Breakfast served up by the Rotary Club of Whitehorse

Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

What:

8:30pm – The Sisters Brothers Adapted from a novel by British Columbia-born Patrick deWitt, set in Oregon circa 1851 and pitched in a darkly comic register, this is the tale of melancholic Eli (John C. Reilly) and cold-blooded Charlie Sisters (Joaquin Phoenix). Routinely drunk but deceptively deadly, these professional men of violence have been charged with assassinating a gold prospector (Riz Ahmed) who’s purportedly betrayed their cold-blooded benefactor. French master Audiard adapts the genre into something entirely unto itself in this atmospheric revisionist Western. Dir. Jacques Audiard, 2018, FRA/BEL/ROM/ESP, 120 min.

Fat biking around the world Go (almost) anywhere on the really hip, trendy fat-bikes (a.k.a. fatties) by Kylie Campbell

What’s Global Fat bike Day?

Global Fat bike Day started in 2012 when a group of fat biking

Brits went for a ride together, and each and every year it gets bigger and more popular around the world (see www.fatbike.com). In Whitehorse, Icycle has celebrated the day for the past few years. First it started as a sale event for fat bikes, and now has become a popular and fun day at Mount McIntyre. “We will be doing a day with free rentals, in early December, for Global Fat bike Day, with a big group ride,” said Clark. “It includes a group ride, fire, snacks to Harvey’s Hut and on Porcupine trail.” On December 1, you can rent a fat bike free. Reservations can be made at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski club and also through Icycle Sports website.

At Mount McIntyre, cross-country ski trails cannot be used by fat bikers; however, the Contagious Mountain Bike Club and the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club are continually working on trails for winter riding, which are the singletrack bike trails. A popular starting trail is Porcupine. Those who want a challenge (if the conditions are right) should check out the Fetish and Collective trails. Grey Mountain also has a multi-use trail called Fat bike Fever. For questions on riding bikes anywhere during any season in the Yukon, contact the Contagious Mountain Bike Club at http://cmbcyukon.ca. Visit http://www.xcskiwhitehorse.ca/ or shop.icyclesport. com/ to reserve your fat bike rental this winter.

Kylie Campbell was born in Australia, is an immigrant in Canada and proud to call the Yukon home.

Oooh... Santa Baby it’s cold outside!

ecember 1 is Global FatBike Day, a day to celebrate all things fat bike-related. But what exactly is fat biking and why get into it? I caught up with Jonah Clark, owner of Icycle sports, to find out about their celebration and why fat biking is so cool. Fat biking is any riding with four- to five-inch tires, which allows riders to ride foot-packed snow, skidoo and dog mushing trails in the winter. The fat tires give excellent traction on snow and for exploring the Yukon. “The sport allows you to ride year-round. It’s a very stable bike,” said Clark, “Fat biking works in conjunction with skiing. Whitehorse often has little snow and is dry, making it ideal mountain-biking conditions. Convenience is you can go fat biking from you backyard with dogs. It’s easier. When conditions are poor to ski, I fat bike.” In 2006, when fat biking started, there was a diehard group of about 10 people riding when, in 2010, the fat biking wave hit Whitehorse. “It surprised me [with] the high uptake to commute to work with fat bikes, but [it was] useful, as [there was] no suspension but big tires, allowing [for] riding in most conditions,” said Clark. “[Fat biking] opened possibilities for commuting and exercising. Late winter riding is great, too. You can access places you couldn’t in the summer, as you need frozen lakes to actually get there.” This year, Icycle will be stationing their fat bike fleet at Mount McIntyre, with the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club. The fat bike rentals will be from their location as they can provide changing facilities and a sauna— and the trails are right there. So, no need to coordinate transporting a fat bike if you are a visitor to town or not set up with the right transportation racks.

Backcountry Routes

(Always dependent on trail conditions (refer to backcountry safety in the winter): visit Yukon.ca and go to Emergency Preparedness for more tips and information The Klondike Snowmobile Association (KSA) provides a large amount of trail work all over Whitehorse and beyond. You can visit their website for trail descriptions, and multi-use trails can be accessed by all. For specific details on these and more trail options, visit http://ksa.yk.ca/trails/yukon-trails. 1.

Bonneville Lakes loop at Fish lake – 20 kilometres (about 3 hours) A beautiful view with easy access, and a great way to get outside in the cold, short winter days

2.

Alligator Lake from Annie Lake Road – 40 kilometres return ( 3–4 hours): 10 kilometres gradual climbing, until plateau, then along to the lake and back the same way—is a popular trail for fat-biking, and there are alternatives around this area to make loops.

3.

Dawson Overland trail – Braeburn to Takhini Hot Springs 100 kilometres (6–9 hours, or overnight)

It is useful to join the Klondike Snowmobile Association, as many groomed trails are conducted through this organization, but they also have backcountry cabins to use overnight and are in the middle of this route. Check out http://ksa.yk.ca/ for more information. This route requires some coordination with vehicle logistics, and also preparedness for the backcountry.

Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen, performs in 1978

B

ohemian Rhapsody is a 134-minute chronicle of the formative years of Queen, and a loosely based bio on the late Freddie Mercury. It is directed by Brian Singer and stars Ramie Malek, Lucy Boynton and Gwilym Lee.

First Thoughts …

It’s all the greatest hits of Queen ... how can you not love this. The music is, well … it is pure unbridled joy. It is impossible not to at least nod your head and, for most of us, the urge to stomp and clap along was overwhelming. This movie is a soundtrack to your favourite music, so it’s hard not to let go and enjoy yourself.

A Closer Look …

Once you look past the glitter and power anthems and take a look at the movie itself, well, it is a very-sanitized version of the Queen saga. The “movie” has large omissions and takes a lot of freedom with timelines, persons and events. I put the word movie in quotes because this is barely a movie. The writers and director seemed, either rightly or wrongly, to take the stand of How can we get to the next song as fast

as possible, and often skip major events, or give cookie-cutter resolutions in order to throw the timeline ahead another four or five years? This movie is not a biography or historically accurate, per se. I will take a moment and give you a few examples of where they might have veered off from history in favour of sculpting a kinder narrative. Right off the bat, Freddie Mercury did not audition in the parking lot to Roger Taylor and Brian May (they were already old friends who had played together for some time). When the lead singer of Smile quit, Taylor, Mercury and May opted to come together as a new band. The movie also portrays Freddie Mercury in a poor light, for working on a solo album and leaving the band for a time, but this was common practice for Queen (Brian May and Roger Taylor had both already put out solo albums before Freddy began working on his). Last but not least, the movie makes a big deal of Freddie’s HIV diagnosis, right before the famous 1985 Live Aid Concert. This was likely done to give the movie the

feeling of a victorious climax. This works well, cinematically, pinning everything the band has on this concert and showing them as underdogs trying to make a comeback. Unfortunately, it’s not true ... the band wasn’t on hiatus; they didn’t need a comeback; they never really left. Queen had been on tour, leading right up to Live Aid, and was not “rusty.” Also, according to multiple sources, the diagnosis of HIV didn’t occur until almost a year later, and the band didn’t find out until ’87 or ’88. Now, some might think that this is a barrier to enjoying the movie, but honestly … it’s not. Ramie Malek gives an outstanding performance as Freddie Mercury, going above and beyond to capture the late singer’s unique stage appeal; and, as stated already, the music is phenomenal. If you are a Queen fan, or just a music lover, in general, it is certainly worth heading down to the local theatre and checking it out. This movie gets a three-out-offive broken mic stands.

Former What’s Up Yukon editor and poet Peter Jickling has taken the reins of Brave New Words, a monthly spoken word open-mic. His co-host and -organizer is another former What’s Up Yukon editor, Meagan Deuling PHOTO: Gregory McLaughlin

Not new, but still brave

Brave New Words began its 11th season of spoken word on November 6 at the Air North Experience Centre

by Josephine Holmes

W

hat’s it like to share the heart and soul of something you’ve written? Peter Jickling, the new host of Brave New Words, said, “It’s right in the title of the event. It’s brave.” Jickling’s goal is to take what can be intimidating—the “pouring out of your soul” and “to create a venue where people can feel com-

fortable, in a community of people sharing their ‘stuff.’ “No one should feel out of place,” he said. That sentiment was echoed by another poet, Naali Holmes, who reflected on the freedom of expression she experienced at Brave New Words. “There was someone who shared her poetry in French and

didn’t translate it,” Holmes said. “I really loved that it was just fine, that it was a very accessible space. Even people who wrote things the same day, shared. I wrote something while I was there, and got up and shared it. “Someone who was an incredible, seasoned writer was welcome to share, and someone who had never written before was welcome.” People who “get up and share for the first time ever, who stretch their comfort zones,” are an inspiration to Jickling. He has seen people share who have been in their late teens, early 20s … all the way up to their 70s. They share the spoken word, a performance art that is wordbased, which includes poetry (any kind of poetry), prose, monologues, storytelling and whatever else people are inspired to write and share. Jickling recalls someone who wrote in postcards during the event and then got up and shared what they had written. A poet, himself, Jickling writes what he calls free-form poetry. “I take small moments … what some might consider banality or commonplace, and I make people notice them.” He gives an example of walking just steps behind a woman who stopped abruptly. He had to swerve to avoid bumping into her. That “banal” moment was the inspiration for a poem. An evening of Brave New Words looks something like this: it has

two components; the first, about a half-hour set by a local musician, is followed by the open-mic/spokenword component. Jickling is not creating something new, he explains, because Brave New Words has been going on for 10 years. “Susanne Hingley did a fantastic job, and before that it was Lauren Tuck … I just want to keep their legacy going.” Keeping the legacy going is also a community endeavour. “Coming out and supporting local poets and storytellers is the most important thing … coming out in two ways— It’s great just to listen, but [it’s also great] to consider Brave New Words as a venue to express something you’ve been ‘sitting on.’” Brave New Words runs from September through April, the first Tuesday of the month, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the North of Ordinary Experience Centre. The first event was November 6 and opened with singer/songwriter Lara Lewis. For more information, you are welcome to email Peter Jickling at prjickling@gmail.com.
