I stumbled on the following notice: “Every year on February 16, Alaskans honor Elizabeth Wanamaker Peratrovich (1911—1958) for her courageous, unceasing efforts to eliminate discrimination and bring about equal rights in Alaska” (Alaska Statutes 44.12.065). I quickly learned she wasn’t Russian at all, but an unnamed Tlingit (Lukaax.adi clan) orphan baby born in St. Petersburg on July 4, 1911. She was adopted by Andrew and Mary Wanamaker,

also Tlingit, and named Elizabeth Wanamaker. In 1931, at the age of 20, she married Roy Peratrovich (1908-89), of Ketchikan, and the two of them spent their entire lives fighting for the civil rights of Alaska natives. She was one of the main driving forces in ensuring the passing of the territory’s AntiDiscrimination Act of 1945, which was the first anti-discrimination law in the United States. On Feb. 16, Alaskans honor her memory with gatherings. Some visit the gravesite where she is buried alongside her husband. Peratrovich has awards, monuments and buildings named in her honor, including the Eliza-

times in the long battle for equal civil rights in North America. Your humble and aging liberal Yukon reporter is a tad embarrassed to admit he had never before heard her name, nor knew her courageous story, but that has changed. From now on, whenever Valentine’s Day pops up out of a snowbank in mid-February like a lost and lonely holiday heart/fart, my thoughts will be of Elizabeth and what she accomplished for all northerners. Might even send a birthday card to St. Petersburg on the 4th of July to honour her memory.

Family fortune tied to the Klondike Gold Rush

A fortune rising from sourdough starter by Pat Ellis

U

.S. President Donald Trump’s grandfather started the family fortune during the great Klondike Gold Rush. He never reached the Klondike Gold Fields; he was hundreds of miles short. Nevertheless, he made his golden stake in Golden, B.C., and in the newly surveyed town of White Horse (originally two words), which was named after the rapids nearby. Financial Sourdough Starter for the family fortunes to come. Friedrich Trump was born in Kallstadt, Germany. His father died when he was young and Friedrich started out as a barber’s apprentice, a useful trade. In 1885, while still a handsome teenager and eager to seek his fortune, he sailed for America, in steerage, to join his sister in New York. He anglicized his name to Fred, and within five years he moved to the young timber town of Seattle and soon had enough cash to buy tables and chairs for a restaurant. His big opportunity came in nearby Monte Cristo, Washington, a gold and silver boomtown where catering to the need for food, shelter and booze was a golden guarantee of profit. Monte Cristo’s boom and bust was a lesson learned and later gave Friedrich a headstart on the Trail of ’98. Not in a hurry to join the stampede, it was said in several publications that Friedrich grubstaked two of his Monte Cristo buddies to record claims in his name in the Klondike, in 1897. Indeed, there is a record in the Yukon Archives of mining claims with the name Fred Trumpf on it, which is prob-

prospectors. The drought of the long depression years was over! Trump’s restaurant in Seattle did a booming business. In 1898, Fred was ready and sold everything and headed north to Skagway, Alaska, to join the thousands of stampeders on the Trail of ’98 to Dawson. His ambition was to set up in the business again. Mining was a tough gamble and he knew the odds. Opportunity came soon after he was on the trail. His tent was turned into a restaurant, cooking up the mandatory year’s stock of groceries. More could easily be bought from departing greenhorns who gave up the stampede. Fred, with his pocket full of profits from the trail, smelled another opportunity. Along with his partner, Ernest Levin, he bought a muddy lot on the lakeshore of Bennett, in the spring of 1899, and put up the Arctic Restaurant and PHOTO: DeYoung’s via Wikimedia Commons Hotel, a spicy establishment—meals for 75 cents; open 24 hours. It was Friedrich Trump a popular hangout for young, is photogaphed fiercely mustachioed customers, bathed in manly aroma and in New York for shrill-voiced ladies, drenched in 1887 in cheap perfume, as enticing, bawdy songs that wafted through the door.

Seattle became a supply city for Americans heading for the Klondike. Money flowed like water for outfitting the hopeful

Richard’s Tire Tips

Are you running all-season tires year round? If so, you may be compromising your safety as well as those around you! Most all-season tires stop gripping normally at 5 degrees Celsius, whereas a designated winter tire continues to grip into the cold. Don’t let the term all-season fool you, these tires are designed for wet/dry traction and are not meant to operate in the winter. If you are not sure if you have a winter or all-season tire you can look at the sidewall of your tire and try to find a pictograph which is the government designation for winter tires, these tires have passed the testing that is required to be classed as a winter tire!

This pictograph is a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake in the middle and is the only way a tire can be classed as winter.

The usual suspects

Every hero has an origin story. Here are a few from Rendezvous

by Amy Kenny

R

endezvous made Marj Eschak move to the Yukon. It was 1977. She’d only come up for the weekend, but was so impressed, she decided to stay. “So I’ve been in every one since then,” she said over the phone, a couple weeks before the 2019 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. Eschak started volunteering in the Rendezvous office just after she’d had her son. She joined the board. She met and mingled with all the Rendezvous characters, and she was even responsible for inventing some herself, including the Snowshoe Shufflers … even though they were kind of an accident. It was 1985 when Eschak and fellow Rendezvous enthusiast Mary Fitton tossed around the idea of a special act for the Queen’s Coronation during the festival. She said they got together thinking it would have something to do with Robert Service, but once the red wine started flowing, the act took a completely different shape. “By the end of the red wine, it had turned into a couple of gals from the claim who, after that long, dark Yukon winter, had a bad case of cabin fever,” she said. “We put on our cleanest long johns and our prettiest skirts and snowshoed to show those skinny girls how to do the can-can.” If you’ve ever been to Rendezvous, you know the shufflers. Dressed in frothy square-dancing skirts and waffled long johns, they stomp out a choreographed dance while wearing snowshoes. These days, there are 11 shufflers, ranging in age from 30s to 60s, but back then, it was only Eschak and

Fitton, and it wasn’t supposed to be an enduring part of Rendezvous. It was supposed to be a onetime thing, but it snowballed from that first year, said Eschak. “We walked by a place and if there was a group, we would walk in with our cassette deck and I would whistle (I have one of those real great whistles) and we would just dance. We were so mobile.” So mobile in fact, that they took the act to Yellowknife for the Caribou Carnival, and dropped in, unrequested, to a chamber of commerce meeting between representatives from cities across Canada. She said they plugged in their boombox and did their shuffle once at the front of the room and once at the back. By the time they finished, they had a request to come to Edmonton for Klondike Days. From there, they appeared at Expo ’86, Festival by the Sea in New Brunswick and trade shows all over the country. It was that travelling that led to the creation of another wellknown Rendezvous character – Sourdough Sam. When Eschak and Fitton were

Jack and Mary McDiarmid were named Mr. and Mrs. Yukon at the 1980 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous

mer. When he had to return to B.C., they kept up a correspondence that was part of the reason he came back to the Yukon, four years later, in the 30s. Shortly after, the couple married. Together, they did some prospecting, had five children, and moved around the territory, from Dawson to Mayo to Stewart Crossing, where they eventually established the lodge there. They bought and sold Mayo’s Tim-O-Lou Hotel (renaming it North Star) before returning to prospecting and “whatever they wanted,” according to an interview they gave in the 80s. That’s the kind of effort that nets you the title of Mr. and Mrs. Yukon, and that’s the kind of thing that makes Rendezvous fun, said Eschak. It’s less the event and more about the people and the community that puts the event together and comes out to vie for the coveted titles – the Sams and the Queens and everything in between. Rendezvous is just the venue for getting to know them.

she saw their Dapper Dan contest. “We looked at each other and said ‘we could do that,’” she said. “We brought if back here (in 1986) and it was huge.” “It” was a version of Dapper Dan, reworked for the North, and christened Sourdough Sam. And the first year, the prize for being named Sourdough Sam was a “well-used pick-up truck.” “We probably used that truck for 15 years because the Sams kept giving it back,” she said. “Second prize was a night on the town with the Shufflers and they all wanted second prize.” Another popular title is that of Mr. and Mrs. Yukon. It’s not really one that you earn, or, at least, it’s not one you know you’re earning. It’s a sort of dignitary position, offered to you based on your history in the North. In 1980, for example, the title fell to Jack and Mary McDiarmid – a couple whose romance began in Mayo when they were in their teens. Mary grew up in the community, and Jack was there from B.C., working one sum-

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Vegetable pancakes with sesame seeds

A

lmost like a fritter, these pancakes can really be a mix of any gently sautéed vegetables brought together in a batter. They make a great light lunch or a side for grilled meat or fish. It’s also a great way to get people who usually shy away from vegetables to try something new. Give this recipe a try substituting the cabbage

for the same amount of sautéed onions and swap the soy sauce for a few crushed coriander seeds to make a simplified version of an onion bhaji. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS

Main squeeze In moving off the downtown street, Rendezvous has been able to expand offerings By Amy Kenny

I

The whipsaw contest taking place on Main Street

t’s been years since the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) was held on Main Street and still, once a month, someone asks – why isn’t Rendezvous held on Main Street anymore? Is it moving back there from Shipyards Park? When? Why not? “Times are changing,” said Darren Bartsch, president of the YSR board. In fact, change is one thing that hasn’t changed about the festival. Some may not remember, but the move off Main wasn’t the first location change for Rendezvous. The annual February event used to be held on Front Street. Before that, it was held on the riverbank, and before that, it was held on the river. Things had to change when the YSR board could no longer count on the river though. “It’s pretty hard to hold Rendezvous on an unfrozen river,” said Bartsch. “So this isn’t the first location move we have experienced.” There were plenty of reasons for the move, said Marj Eschak, who’s been involved with Rendezvous for almost 40 years. First off, she said the move to Shipyards has made life much easier for volunteers who used to scramble to set everything up on Main Street. “We had a very narrow window from Friday night to Sunday night,” she said. “Many of us were there all night Friday night and Saturday morning … taking down a tent and cleaning up and putting away killed our volunteers. We were killing them.” Not only that, it was breaking the bank. Some of the set-up

work had to be done by city crews. That narrow window of time however, meant they too had to work through the night, which meant overtime pay. “That was a huge cost and part of the rationale for moving,” she said. “So the city crews could, at their leisure, start setting up the (Shipyards) grounds with the snow pads for dog pull.” Another part of the decision had to do with the fact that the city had specifically developed Shipyards to host events such as Rendezvous – with ample space for activities as well as parking, a must for a lot of people coming into the core in the middle of February. “The city built that beautiful park down there and parking is so easy. It just made life easier for so many people.” And while Eschak said Rendezvous did bring business to Main Street, and Bartsch said it definitely got more locals involved when the festival was taking place directly on their doorsteps, there were also complaints from small business owners on the strip. Many said that people were coming into their shops, sure, but only to get warm or use the bathrooms. Bartsch said he understand the nostalgia around Main Street-era Rendezvous. “I grew up in here in Whitehorse and moved here in ’83. My experience of Rendezvous on Main was definitely a good one. It was very traditional in my mind, but I don’t remember such big events as we’re offering today. I remember

there was a truck pull and tug of wars, but I don’t ever remember seeing a big band or performers performing on Main Street, which is what we’re offering to the community these days.” Not only that, being in Shipyards has led Rendezvous to work more closely with the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC). This has allowed for additional performances, as well as a Rendezvous craft fair. “We had a great response on the craft fair, which is a rejuvenated event,” said Bartsch. “We were scrambling to accommodate more people from the communities around the Yukon, and have them become a part of the show and provide space.” The cultural centre has also provided a backdrop for the Queen’s Coronation ball. “It’s a wonderful venue,” said Bartsch. “The KDCC has been nothing but great for us, year after year, and working with them is just wonderful … I’m excited to see the facility being used to the fullest extent.” Working more closely with the centre in the future is just one more change that could come down the pipe for a festival that’s always evolving.

But nowhere near as mad as here during Rendezvous By Amy Kenny

W

hen Mary Fitton placed second in the Mad Trapper competition at the 1978 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR), some of the men complained. At the time, Mad(am) Trapper didn’t exist as a contest (in fact, it was the first year for Mad Trapper), but any women wanting to compete were welcome to compete against each other. Fitton said she placed by earning more overall points against the women she competed against than any of the men earned against their competition. She was only bested by first-place finisher Martyn Williams (Jim McPherson finished in third). Over the course of a weekend, she said each of them competed in five of nine optional events including a one-mile snowshoe, flour-packing, log-splitting, a 10km cross country ski, rifleshooting, the Chilkoot climb (which was up and down the hill behind Whitehorse General Hospital), a snowshoe bush race and

tea boil, the leg wrestle or the circle wrestle. The options were similar to those that had been in the mix prior to 1978, but they were organized under a single contest banner for supreme bragging rights. “With an emphasis on good sportsmanship and fun, the event will feature participation in several of the Rendezvous activities,” read the announcement in that year’s program, when events included optionals such as the onemile snowshoe race, a one-mile bush race with tea-making, flourpacking, cross-country skiing, logsawing and splitting, rifle-shooting, leg-wrestling, circle-wrestling and the Chilkoot climb. There were also three compulsories – the snowshoe run-off, log sawing and splitting, and animal calls. “Participation is at the competitors’ risk – the Rendezvous Committee will not be responsible for any accidents resulting from stampeding moose,” said the program.

first time she took part, of being mind-blown by the events. She thinks that’s what brings people up every year, and why the title of Mad Trapper still has cachet, even if people outside the Yukon don’t really understand what it means. “If you’ve never done it be-

gotten a bit big for her in recent years, and she can’t compete anymore, but she loved the camaraderie of the events. She loved that Whitehorse was so small at the time, you knew everyone you ran into while you were walking around on Main Street, or slogging through the woods with a pack on your back while you were competing. She liked that feeling, the

fore, you have nothing to compare it to,” she said. “For people coming from down south, you just wonder ‘what the hell is going on up here?’ “I’d write back to my family in England and they couldn’t understand what I was talking about.”

It’s a mad, mad world

Fitton doesn’t remember which five of the nine activities she chose to do in ‘78, but she remembers her prize that year – a new pair of skis, boots and poles. She also remembers that, partly because of the uproar over her podium finish, Mad(am) Trapper was established in 1980. In fact, Fitton remembers basically everything that’s happened at every Rendezvous since 1972, when she moved to the Yukon. Fitton, 75, is originally from England. She’s the only one of her family to have made the move to Canada. She said she bounced back and forth between the Yukon and Vancouver during the 70s, because her boyfriend lived there. They moved up permanently, in 1993, when they bought a house on 7th Ave. He was killed in a helicopter crash the following year - “I’ve stayed single,” she added. “I can’t find anybody to match up to him.” - but Fitton remains in their house in the Yukon and for decades, she remained a part of Rendezvous. Besides her Mad Trapper win, she remembers winning the hairiest leg competition in 1983 (she had just been to Hawaii, so her legs were nice and tanned). She remembers being on the YSR board in 1984. She started the snowshoe can-can line in 1986, though she also participated in the regular can-can line. She said she remembers Rendezvous swimming competitions in the hotel pool where the Coast High Country Inn is now located, and rifle-shooting in the basement of Whitehorse Elementary School. omáš Kubínek was just three years old on the August night in 1968 when 250,000 Warsaw Pact troops invaded his Czechoslovakian homeland to crush Alexander Dubček’s liberalization movement, known as the Prague Spring. “My father was quite outspoken against communism for a long time. So when the occupation happened, he right off the bat said we had to get out of there, otherwise we wouldn’t have much of a life, growing up,” Kubínek recalled. “We left within a few days of the occupation and went across

the border to Austria, then spent three months in a refugee camp there until Canada accepted us.” More than 50 years later, a faint hint of Central Europe remains in Kubínek’s voice as he describes his impressions on a return trip to Prague at the age of 22, when his homeland was still under Soviet rule. “It was depressing; it was grey. When I arrived, it was the May Day celebration, so they had all these red banners up everywhere, with golden writing about how great the Soviet Union was, and how communism was the tonic for the people. It was horrible.”

Despite those grey, depressing roots, Kubínek has devoted his life to bringing joy and laughter to audiences around the world as a solo performer whose promo tagline describes him as “a certified lunatic and master of the impossible.” “I love laughing and I love humour. I remember, when I was a kid, going to the library. I would get books of cartoons from Punch magazine or Chas Addams or New Yorker cartoons,” he said. “I saw them as these wonderful riddles that had a little bit of humour at the centre, and tried cont’d on page 13 ...

The anarchy element ... cont’d to figure out what the joke was. I remember neighbours would have stacks of Reader’s Digest, and I’d always read ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’ and ‘Humour in Uniform.’” Kubínek was exposed early to a variety of art forms that would become the basis of his career. “My Dad would take us to puppet shows and magic shows. As a kid in St. Catharines (Ontario), he took me to the circus. I think I was in kindergarten when we went the first time. “I just loved all of that stuff. Anytime I’d go to the library, I’d pick up books about performing and clowns and circuses and magic. I don’t even know what drew me to it. Maybe we have tendencies of where our path is predestined or something.” At the age of nine, Kubínek gave his first performance before a group of experienced magicians. Four years later, he had an agent. He would soon make his circus debut with a duo of Brazilian clowns. One of his circus highlights was performing with members of the famous European troupe of aerialists, The Flying Wallendas. “I was a pirate king character, and I would climb one of the masts, where the rigging was attached, and taunt Tino Wallenda to come up and fight me. “I was on a rappelling harness and we’d kind of struggle around up there. Then he’d throw me over the edge and I’d look like I was falling on the audience, but I would actually swing on the end of a rope and not hit the ground.” Despite the potential danger, Kubínek trusted his seasoned performing partner. “We had this private little moment on the high wire. The band would be playing this dramatic music and he would be standing opposite me and he’d always say, ‘are you clipped in?’ And I’d say, ‘yup.’ And he’d say, ‘OK, here I

Kubínek, whose promo tagline describes him as “a certified lunatic and master of the impossible”, has brought joy and laughter to audiences around the world as a solo performer come.’ “I always loved that little private moment. ‘Are you clipped in?’” As a solo artist who is equal parts clown, mime, acrobat, contortionist and vaudevillian, Kubínek has learned to fly without a net, “always shooting a little bit higher” than where he finds himself at any given time. “By getting more proficient at performing and improvising and humour, and also the poetic element of it, I surprise my own self in my shows, and it makes me reach even higher and tune into it more.” Although not a trained musician, Kubínek does incorporate a ukulele (and sometimes a musical saw) into his performances. He has also made several appearances with symphony orchestras. “When I started to do it seven or eight years ago, it was pretty scary for my first few shows because you have 70 musicians who have spent their whole lives learning their instruments,” he admitted. “Nowadays, it’s just a lot of fun because I’m the anarchy element, the crazy guest. I love doing it because I make the musicians laugh behind me and I make

the audience laugh. I just pull it all together and make everybody fall in love with each other.” Kubínek describes himself as a “travelling, itinerant, dogand-pony puppeteer and flimflam man,” who aims to provide “a kind of theatrical atmosphere that’s alive in every moment and playing off the audience.” So, what role does the audience play? “They’re the lover of the evening. They’re who I’m doing it for, who I’m sharing the evening with. They’re my date for the night.” But does the date ever go badly? “I’m pretty good at it,” Kubínek laughed. “I’m a seasoned gigolo.” His new show, Tomáš Kubínek – Miracle Man, will be on the Yukon Arts Centre mainstage on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. It is recommended for adult audiences only. Other shows are slated for Dawson City and other Yukon communities.

Hello Everybody, We invite you to share your photos of Yukon wildlife. Eail your high-resolution images with a description of what’s going on and what camera equipment you used to Editor@WhatsUpYukon.com

I took this photo on January 22 at midday on Range Road north of the trailer parks. I thought it was a coyote when I took the photo, but when I looked at the photo when I got home and saw how thick and stocky it was, I started thinking it could be a wolf. But I received a unanimous response from Yukon-Anything Animal that it is a very well fed, fluffy coyote. Camera: Nikon Coolpix B500

Sugilite is a purple stone that is found with its main deposits in South Africa, but also in Japan and Canada. It is a beautiful opaque stone, that is usually a rich deep purple, but does come in different colours too. The colour in this rare stone come from the manganese traces in the stone. Its name comes from a petrologist, Ken-ichi Sugi, who discovered it in 1944 in Iwagi Islet, Japan. There are many attributes given to the rare stone, and it has been said that Sugilite is the ‘premier love stone’ of this age. This stone is associated with spiritual growth, and brings gifts of wisdom and spiritual devotion. Sugilite is also said to create a warm, protective “shield of Light,” against negativity and the disharmony of others. Interesting story: Before the turn of the century, Morning Star, a Hopi elder, fulfilled a 2000 year old Hopi prophecy and travelled to South Africa, to cross the “great salty water” to awaken the eye of the dragon. The deposit of Sugilite in South Africa was symbolic of the purple “eye” of the dragon.

Fire, Spirit, Human

Fire relates to spirit and to the human world in certain traditions. Looking at the human world, it has been said in certain traditions, that there are the four worlds of the differing peoples on our planet. The Red, Black White and Yellow people. Looking a little deeper, it has also been said that those four worlds sit in four directions. South, West, North and East. The four human qualities are placed in those directions and therefore line up with the four human worlds. It would potentially break out as follows: South: Water: Emotions: Red People – the people of the HEART West: Earth: Body: Black people – the people of the BODY North: Air: Mind: White People – the people of the MIND East: Fire: Spirit: Yellow People – the people of the SPIRIT. Something to ponder and possibly contemplate.

Strength and style Yukoners bust out their best ink on Feb. 19 at the Town and Mountain

airy legs, bushy beards, interesting and colourful tattoos—that’s just some of what you can expect to see at this year’s Strength and Style Competition during the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. After speaking with Bruce Sahlstrom, YSR board champion, I got a better sense of what this event is all about. “Strength and Style is about Yukoners coming out and sharing a little piece of themselves with us. It’s a chance to learn something new about your neighbors,” Sahlstrom said as he organized the prizes for this year’s competition. The event has been around for almost 20 years. In that time, it has morphed and changed. Originally, it involved thumb wars and armwrestling. Now it includes events such as best ink. This year’s competition, presented by Manu Keggenoff Photography, is takes place over the course of two separate nights. On

Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Town and Mountain Hotel, the focus is on all things ink—best ink, best tattoo story, best arm tattoo, best leg tattoo and so on. “People have a lot meaning behind their tattoos, I am excited that this year we added best tattoo story as a category,” Sahlstrom said. Last year’s Strength and Style competition saw more than 20 people participating. They showed tattoos of all sizes, shapes and origins. Rendezvous is hoping to have at least that many participate in 2019. The second night, held Wednesday, Feb. 20, there’s a return to traditional events including hairy legs, hairy armpit, best beard, best old growth, best new growth and best mustache. Winners of these events will receive the coveted Gold Razor. When asked how one decides who has the longest beard or leg hair, Sahlstrom smiled. “We have it down to an art,”

he said. “We have our ways. Our judges have magnifying glasses and rulers and all sorts of different things.” Judges are selected from the community. They remain anonymous until the competition begins. The Strength and Style competition seems like it will be a great event. Folks can sign up in advance at www.YukonRendezvous.com or in person the night of the events, both of which take place at the Town and Mountain Hotel. There is an entry fee for each category. Come on down and check it out. It should be a good time for everyone involved.

Dawson City is the closest actual town to Rockton, and it’s generally only accessible by plane. I suppose one could get there overland, but there’s no road. It would be a long walk in the summer. It might be easier on a snow machine in the winter, if you had enough gas to make the trip. Rocktonites (or perhaps Rocktonians) don’t try to make the trip. If they wanted to be in the world, they would not be in Rockton in the first place. They would not have gone to a place so off-grid that there are no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, and very little electricity. Casey Duncan went to Rockton for a couple of reasons. One was her own, in that she was a homicide detective who had killed someone. Mainly though, she went to help her friend, Diana, hide from Diana’s brutal ex-husband.

That turned out to have been a mistake, as we learned in the first book, City of the Lost, which was originally released in serial form in several mini e-books a couple of years ago. (It’s now available as a collected volume.) Casey managed to put her skills to work, finding employment as a detective working for the town’s sheriff, Eric Dalton. There was a murder to be solved and she proved her worth getting to the bottom of it. In this second book, she is settled in and close to being happy in the town. Things get complicated while she and a deputy are out searching for a resident who has bolted from a bout of winPHOTO: courtesy of Dan Davidson ter cabin fever. It’s not so much that A Darkness Absolute is a Rockton they want to bring him back as thriller by Kelley Armstrong, the that they want to save his life. second in her City of the Lost series On this search, they get trapped in a cave in a storm. In

the cave, they find a woman who had gone missing months earlier, and has been held captive all this time. Getting her back to town is the beginning of a very tense period in the community. There are attacks. There is suspicion. People get hurt, and there is a need to find out who is doing all this, and a need to put a stop to it. Canadian author Kelley Armstrong is better known as a writer of novels with supernatural trappings including werewolves (she wrote the books from which the TV show Bitten was adapted), witches and other supernatural beings. More recently, she has branched off into mysteries and thrillers. There are three Rockton novels already in print. The third is called This Fallen Prey, and the fourth, Watcher in the Woods, is due out February 2019. Armstrong has produced 43 novels and short story collections since she began publishing in 2001. They’re not heavyweight material, but they’re enjoyable. Dan Davidson has been writing about books for Yukon publications since 1977.
