Advanced Techniques to help you

FEEL BEAUTIFUL EVERY DAY!

Multi-instrumentalists Aaron Jonah Lewis and Ben Belcher performed in Dawson on February 10

T

he second half of the Aurora Trail lineup of the Home Routes program began in February, with three house concerts planned between Feb. 1 and April 14. Home Routes sends performers out to do about a dozen house concerts, six times a year, in 11 different touring zones from the Maritimes to the Yukon. We are part of the Aurora Trail, which includes a bit of northern British Columbia and the western tip of the Northwest Territories. This season, living rooms are being filled with good music in Dease Lake and Atlin in B.C.; Crag Lake, Marsh Lake, Haines Junction, Faro, Mayo, Dawson City, Old Crow and Whitehorse in the Yukon; and Inuvik in NWT. In February, the Corn Potato String Band came up to Dawson. Normally a trio, the band was whittled down to a duo for this tour, including Aaron Jonah Lewis (fiddle, guitar, banjo and beard) and Ben Belcher. (guitar and banjo.) These guys are specialists in obscure banjo tunes, often reclaimed from an era before jazz became the dominant genre in America, when the banjo was more than bluegrass and country. The banjo as a clas-

sical instrument may seem odd now, but this pair makes you believe in what they have reclaimed from what they call “the dustbins of history.” There were lots of lively fiddle and guitar tunes and some vocals as well. It was quite an evening at the Hakonson’s lovely home. The pair also worked with a local fiddle group and spent some time in the Robert Service School while they were here. Between Feb. 28 and March 15, Winnipeg-based Madeleine Roger was on the Aurora Trail. She is described as a contemporary folk singer who uses multiple tunings on her guitar and sometimes sounds a bit like a young Joni Mitchell. Her website says the following: “A former thespian and a lifelong traveler, she is prone to absorbing stories and questioning the way that things are, creating songs with imaginative melodies and honesty that bares truths about being alive.” Her website also links to a number of videos and simple live performances that persuade me she will be worth seeing and hearing in person. She will no doubt be travelling with copies of her debut album, Cottonwood, which came out

last October. Alberta-raised fiddler Daniel Gervais will round out the season between March 31 and April 14. He will be travelling with guitarist Graeme Poile. Gervais was Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion in 2011 and again in 2016. He plays classical violin as well as the fiddle. He currently teaches as sessional faculty at MacEwan University in the jazz and popular music program. Gervais performed at the 2012 London Olympics as a cultural ambassador of Alberta. He has toured with Zéphyr, a French-Canadian dance group, and at numerous festivals in Canada, the USA and France. He has taught in many settings, including with the Suzuki Strings and Fiddleheads in Whitehorse. His website also includes several dozen of his tunes, both interesting covers and original material. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Murray has some tips for cooking nice salmon steaks

N

ow that we’ve caught the fish, what do we do? Throw away the fish chain, remove the fish to a waterbox to keep the fish alive and replace it with an ice box. Keeping fish alive on a chain will cause deterioration and stress to the fish. This also stands true for the waterbox. After you have landed the fish, kill it immediately. Split the belly, and clean and draw the gut. If the head is to be left on, remove the gills. Wipe the fish dry, inside and out. Never wash it. If you don’t have an ice box, wrap each fish in brown paper. If you have multiple fish, make sure their skin doesn’t touch.

During the summer, on a hot or warm day, when fishing from shore, kill the fish immediately. Gut and clean (rubbing your finger down the spine of the fish) and remove all throwaway contents. Dry (do not wash) with a cloth and hang the fish in the shade of a tree until you are ready to go home. It all helps to preserve the fine taste. EASY FISH STEW 1 pound cleaned fish 2 tsp salt 1 medium chopped white onion 1/2 tsp dill weed 4 cups water

4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 2 cups milk 2 Tbsp butter Chives or fresh dill Cut fish into 2-inch pieces. Place the fish, salt, onions and dill weed in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Turn down to simmer until fish flakes with a fork. Drain, reserving the stock to boil potatoes until tender. Return fish and add milk to potato stock. Simmer slowly for about 20 minutes. Pour into tureen dish and dot with butter. Garnish with cut chives or fresh dill. Serves 6. ATLIN POACHED LAKE TROUT IN WHITE WINE 2 pounds lake trout fillets 1/2 cup sliced brown mushrooms 1 sliced green onion 2 Tbsp butter 1 cup dry white wine 1 Tbsp flour 1 additional Tbsp butter 1 cup water 1/2 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup grated Swiss cheese salt and pepper to taste lemon juice to taste

This week’s saying:

“ Even a lobster gets a divorce once they realize they married a crab.”

Melt 2 Tbsp butter in saucepan. Add mushrooms and onion. Stir until cooked. In another saucepan, layer fish fillets with cooked mushrooms and onions. Pour over cont’d on page 5 ...

You’ve caught your lake trout, now what? wine and water and bring to a simmer. Simmer 10 minutes. Remove fish and keep warm in shallow baking dish. Strain poaching liquid and reduce to half the volume. Beat 1 Tbsp of butter and flour into a paste and slowly add to sauce until thickened. Add cream followed by salt, pepper and lemon juice. Sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.Pour sauce over fillets in baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese and place under broiler until lightly golden. Serves 4. LAKE TROUT ON THE BBQ 1/2 cup butter 1 Tbsp barbeque sauce 1/2 tsp garlic salt 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1/2 cup white wine Fillet lake trout, leaving skin on. Preheat barbeque and add a chunk of hardwood for smoke. Mix ingredients together. When barbeque is hot and smoking, place trout on rack, skin down. Brush mixture on meat side of fillet every 3 to 4 minutes. Remove fillets when they flake to a fork. Serve on bed of lettuce leaves. Garnish with parsley.

OLD-FASHIONED OVENBAKED FISH STEAKS 2 pounds fresh fillet steaks 1 tsp salt Dash of pepper and cayenne 2 Tbsp salad oil 3/8 tsp powdered thyme 2 cups milk 1/2 cup cracker crumbs Lay steaks side by side in a well-oiled baking pan. Sprinkle 1/2 tsp. salt, pepper and cayenne. Heat the salad oil. Add thyme and 1/2 tsp salt. Brush over fish steaks. Carefully pour milk around the steaks. Sprinkle cracker crumbs. Bake in an oven at 350 F for about 30 minutes. Remove steaks carefully to hot platter. Serve with tartar sauce. Good for half a dozen hungry fishermen. AN EASY SALMON SUPPER WITH PEPPERS AND ONION This is not only easy and fast but also one of my favorite fish dishes 4 salmon steaks 1 cup seasoned flour 2 Tbsp vegetable oil

1 green pepper, thinly sliced 1 red pepper, thinly sliced 1 medium white onion, thinly sliced 1 Tbsp freshly chopped parsley salt and pepper to taste Oven should be preheated to 350 F. Season steaks and dredge in flour. The oil should be heated in a large pan over a medium heat. Add the steaks and cook for no more than 4 minutes on each side. Remove fish and place in a pan. Continue cooking for another 6 minutes. When done, place steaks on a platter and keep warm. Add peppers and onions to a frying pan and cook for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley. If you want more fish recipes, I wrote a small booklet for the Yukon Fish and Game Association. It has some great trout recipes, as well as some fine batters to go along with the fish. I understand they still have a limited number left. The Association is located at 509 Strickland St. in Whitehorse. Violence 101

PART SIX OF SIX

Twenty defined techniques of violence by Serge Harvey-Gauthier

TIME TO GET OUTSIDE PHOTO: Pixabay

The last five articles have informed the Yukon about the cycle of violence, as well as its categories, forms and foundations. This scourge generates a high level of suffering among its victims who, when possible, must distance themselves and seek protection and help so that one day they can be happy and without violence in their lives. Next, and in order of cowardice, here are the eight most effective ways out of 20 that I call “techniques.” These are the techniques used by those who seek to create, develop, feed and propagate violence until they can act with impunity, which is the dream of every aggressor. Of 20 known techniques, we have just explained, with concrete examples, eight principal means to develop, provoke and propagate violence with impunity. This knowledge is useful because it helps properly identify and deconstruct past and present violence. To understand violence is to combat it. Everything must be implemented to maintain and multiply these very constructive efforts.

The laissez-faire technique is well articulated by the three monkeys. I see nothing. I hear nothing. I say nothing

T

he following principles are generally accepted by the majority of experts and are unavoidable in all information or treatment of the phenomenon.

1. ZERO EFFORT

[already shared in the article #5, resumed here]

It is the ease of not doing anything instead of engaging in self-reflection and seeking out healthy answers to one’s personal and social needs. It is the status quo, which could be in place for years, for a lifetime, or even for generations. It is also evidently a tangible sign of pride, that poison which stifles any chance of happiness. Category : social violence Forms : physical, psychological violence Category : affective (conjugal) violence Form : physical violence

2. ROSE-COLOURED GLASSES It is a psychological thought filter that allows the aggressor to erase all individual responsibility. The rosy tint transforms colours into one individual colour and, by extension, into a single thought once filtered. With a rosy perception of the world, all violence unquestionably becomes justified. Say goodbye to nuance and the aggressor’s efforts to take responsibility. Category : affective (conjugal) violence Form : psychological violence

3. LAISSEZ-FAIRE It is the abstinence of words or actions that could clarify a situation. It’s the abstinence of words or actions that would re-establish the facts to the detriment of an aggressor, who might not have any real power or who might be very powerful. The laissez-faire technique is well-articulated by the three monkeys. I see nothing. I hear nothing. I say nothing. Categories : organizational/professional and social violence Form : financial violence Category : Organizational/professional violence Form : sexual violence

4. OMISSION The omission technique is the control of information by withholding important facts with the belief that the violent person decides that those facts are unimportant… and even less so for his victim or victims. How ? (i) They mentally “forget” what would tangibly confront them; (ii) In conversation, by silences added between verbal affirmations and omissions in phrases that evidently become lies;

(iii) By the omission of gestures and actions, when they are expertly controlling people. Categories : affective, organization al/professional, social violence Forms : psychological, physical, sexual, financial violence Category : organizational/professional violence Form : sexual violence

5. OUTRAGE Regardless of whether arguments appear rational or outlandish, this technique requires that an aggressor be outraged by everything and nothing. Unending outrage using all possible media platforms. Then, seeking to multiply this outrage as many times as possible, rebroadcasting it on “anniversaries” of one month, one year, or during a similar moment of outrage. Category : social violence Forms : psychological, physical violence

6. THE BOILING FROG It’s like boiling a frog, but very slowly so that the abnormal becomes habitual. That banalization is accepted by several people with authority, up to the powerful people of the world. This begins with small requests, which, together, result in the control of a majority of peaceful, benevolent and (let’s say it) sometimes naïve people. As social violence, we observe that democracy is quite fragile, since it is easily undermined to the point of control. Category : social violence Forms : psychological, physical violence

7. THE GIFT-WRAPPING WOW This technique accompanies all aggression. In the eyes of a violent person, looking good is more important than the violent acts themselves. An effective giftwrapping disguises the misdirection, lies, injustice, fraud, murders and fanaticism. Under false pretenses of love, kindness, pious tradition, etc., violence is hidden behind the notion of superiority. The simple goal of controlling the victim or victims is at the heart of the acts. Category : familial (affective) violence Form : physical violence

8. DISSIMULATION (TAQIYA) It is a technique that allows violent people to hide their true beliefs and values, up to violent acts. Dissimulation is also called taqiya by Salafists to hide the true values of the jihadists who live in our democracies. Generally, to openly demonstrate their beliefs and violent values would put them in immediate danger of being identified and arrested.

Music to warm your soul

Donovan (comes to our neck of the) Woods on March 29 by Megan Skarnulis

H

is music soothes the soul like that first warm beverage on a busy morning; his lyrics surround your senses with the sort of calm that’s equivalent to a warm, lingering hug from someone you love. Once described as “Canada’s best kept secret,” Whitehorse will be privileged to welcome Donovan Woods and his band, The Opposition, to the territory on March 29, when they play a 7 p.m. show at the Yukon Arts Centre. Woods describes himself as “a folk/singer-songwriter guy, but there is some other stuff in there … there is definitely some country in there too.” Regardless of the musical genre though, Woods has a noteworthy musical resume. He released his first album The Hold Up in 2007. Since then he has experienced significant success as both a recording artist, and as a songwriter for other artists. His song “Brand New Gun” can be heard in the movie Numb. Another song, “Wait and See,” was featured in Degrassi: The Next Generation. Moreover, Woods co-wrote the song “Portland, Maine,” which was recorded and performed by Tim McGraw. He also won the 2019 Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year for his record, Both Ways. As a recording artist, Woods

has performed all over Canada and the United States, hitting tiny towns such as Liverpool, Nova Scotia, as well as cities including Toronto and Vancouver. This will be his first trip to the Yukon though. “I’m looking forward to it very much … In fact, really everyone I talk to in the Canadian music industry says, ‘you have to go to the Yukon, you just have to go, it’s so beautiful.’” Some of the members of his band have been. Having recorded or worked with all of them in the past, Woods speaks fondly of them. He jokingly called them “old road dogs,” adding that they’ve toured everywhere, seen it all and done it all. As he spoke, he sounded grateful to have a group of musicians (literally) behind him who are “very calm and confident in all situations. Say at big concerts or pushing the tour van up a snowy hill.” (that last skillset should prepare them for the slushy climb to the Yukon Arts Centre.) Woods looks like he belongs in the Yukon, comfortable in a toque and plaid. When people first hear Woods’ smooth, acoustically-driven music, they’re often perplexed when they see an image of the artist. He looks like the kind of fellow you’d go to if you wanted to buy some quality cords of firewood to

PHOTO:Danielle Holbert

Woods looks like he belongs in the Yukon, comfortable in a toque and plaid keep you warm in the winter and you definitely wouldn’t look twice if you saw him standing amongst some coffee-sipping locals over at Midnight Sun. In an interview, Woods admitted that , for a long time, he thought his look would prevent him from succeeding as a recording artist. In 1996, he typed “Is it possible to be just a songwriter as a job?” as an Internet search. Fast-forward to present day and Woods has certainly surpassed

his own expectations. This musical underdog is now celebrated as both a songwriter and a prominent Canadian musician, playing prestigious venues including Massey Hall and, of course, the Yukon Arts Centre. When he comes to Whitehorse it will be the ninth consecutive night of his current tour, which spans western Canada and the northwestern United States. He said he maintains momentum by relying on an excellent tour man-

ager, but added he has a “fun job.” When he gets overwhelmed, he just thinks of all the other jobs he’s had in the past. I guess that means we won’t be buying firewood from this bearded man in plaid anytime soon! Megan Skarnulis is a Yukonbased writer who makes every effort to balance the craziness of motherhood, a career, and maintaining a beautiful home in the country.

Velvet Antler shows students how to feel good

Kate Fitzgerald teaches and performs cabaret and burlesquestyle dance through her company, Velvet Antler

by Amy Kenny

S

ome ladies show up in high heels and lipstick; others roll into the dance studio right after having rolled off the couch. There’s no right way to come to class, said Kate Fitzgerald over the phone in late February. Her voice was low and sultry—the result of a cold rather than any concentrated effort to sound as sexy as the business she runs with coowner Rebecca Reynolds. “We’re advocates for doing what feels good. Just ignore your life for an hour and practice some self-love,” she said of Velvet Antler Productions, a Whitehorse-based company that offers private, corporate and commercial entertainment (as well as dance classes), often in the form of cabaret and burlesquestyle dance. In 2012, neither Fitzgerald

nor Reynolds had been planning to get into production, though both had dance backgrounds (Reynolds in ballet and modern dance and Fitzgerald in jazz and contemporary) and both had been involved with the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Can-Can Line. That was the year however, that Fitzgerald was working at The Dirty Northern, which needed a New Year’s Eve event. She and Reynolds put together a performance. When it was a success, they decided to start producing their own shows at venues, and at conferences and events for out-of-towners. “There’s a demand to bring that kind of Yukon-y atmosphere to an event when you come up here,” said Fitzgerald. “The way people do business and run corporations, there is always that

little bit extra they want to bring to events here and we were the extra that people wanted.” The dance classes grew naturally out of the production side of Velvet Antler. In 2015, Fitzgerald and Reynolds started offering classes, which have evolved to include introduction, intermediate and diva-level heels classes, as well as an urban heels class—though Fitzgerald is quick to point out that heels are optional in all classes. “The (dance classes) were the catalyst to make it a business and start marketing it,” said Fitzgerald. Classes usually run for eight weeks in spring and fall, and typically have anywhere from eight to 15 students. While the focus is on fun, Fitzgerald said she and Reynolds teach true

dance technique, with proper posture and alignment in mind, so everyone is learning safely. She said most dancers are nervous in the beginning, because they come to class with little to no experience, but they fall in love quickly. “There are a few diehards that have danced with me for three years. Most had never taken a class until then. Now it’s their life!” Some do it for fun. Others do it to prep for the Can-Can Line, or to hone their skills after joining the line. Still others take it with an eye toward doing their own solo or group burlesque shows. Last year, Velvet Antler arranged for a show that focused on providing a performance opportunity for the women who had taken classes. “That really sparked an interest

in a lot of people to dance and to get involved in that kind of thing more, purely because it’s fun.” “No one’s saving the rainforest,” Fitzgerald said, laughing. “But I think people are becoming more aware of the importance of taking care of themselves in a holistic sense. Doing things that make you feel good.” For more information on class registration and on dropin punch card passes, visit VelvetAntlerProductions.com

Not your regular roast How’sBUSINESS How’sBUSINESS How’sBUSINESS

Atlin coffee is burning up the market by Amy Kenny burner they have now—the only one in Canada and one of only two in North America, they said. Leandra said they had to relearn everything about their craft when the heat source was wood. They were initially worried about efficiency, but found the roaster burns two pounds of wood per 22 pounds of roasted beans. They also wondered about the beans potentially taking on a smoky flavour, but the roaster protects against that. After that, they worked to figure out how to bring forward the flavours they wanted to focus on. “There was some trial and error,” said Philippe. “You (already) have to think about the origin of the beans, the temperature in the drum and then, roasting with wood heat, there’s how pitchy the wood is,” said Leandra, noting they mostly use dead stand wood. “We had to learn through experimentation. The propane makes instant changes to heat input. With this, we always have to think a step ahead because it’s not instant. This is a different type of heat that’s applied too. It’s a dry heat.” So far, they seem to have a handle on it. Philippe works parttime on the business in the winter and full-time in the summer. Leandra is full-time year-round, roasting a couple times a week. In addition to selling at various events around the Yukon and B.C. each summer (if you’ve been to Atlin Music Festival they’ve likely helped you wake up after

Coffee beans aged in whisky barrels are a new addition to the Atlin Mountain Coffee Roasters offerings at least one poor night’s sleep in a tent), they sell through grocery and specialty stores as far south as Kelowna. Leandra credits word of mouth for their popularity. They get their beans (there are 12 varieties) from Peru, Nicaragua, Columbia, Sumatra and Ethiopia. All are certified organic, fair-trade and come with rainforest alliance certifications. They say their personal favourites change all the time. So do their techniques. They’re constantly experimenting, trying to have fun and find new flavours. “You can really be in tune with the coffee beans,” said Leandra. “It’s complex. A lot of things affect the roast of the bean.” One of those things is how the beans are stored, They recently started aging them beans

PHOTOS: courtesy of Atlin Mountain Coffee Roasters

H

aving a wood-fired coffee roaster is more than just a gimmick—it’s good business sense for Philippe and Leandra Brient, co-owners of Atlin Mountain Coffee Roasters. Sure, it fits with the idea people have of Northerners, all woodstoves and plaid lumberjackets, and it fits with the personal ethos of the couple, who try to limit the footprint they leave on the Earth, but it’s more than that. Despite the learning curve that came with the machine, it’s just more reliable for the Brients than the alternative. Because the couple’s home and roastery is located 12 kilometers outside of Atlin, they didn’t want to deal with a propane-powered roaster and the associated running back and forth to town for more fuel. Because they’re offgrid (while talking to What’s Up Yukon for this story, their phone dropped the connection a couple times), they didn’t want to rely on anything electric. When they started researching wood-burning options, they found one in Italy. They knew it would be a change from what they’d learned on. The Brients are self-taught. Fractured and beloved

an uninhabited fishing village in Greenland. Another series of photographs shows old painted murals, mostly peeling off the walls. Koivisto’s video installation uses the room in an interesting way. A bench faces into the corner where a two-channel video installation is projected on the corner’s two walls. On the left, a video shot from one point looks out over the prow of a sailing ship onto a coastal, summer landscape. It pans slowly across a glacier and back again. The corner of the room mimics the boat’s prow. The righthand landscape image, when I was there, remained still. One challenge I face when writing about video art is that it’s often hard to tell if something like this still image is an artistic choice or a glitch. I experienced a similar challenge in the video installation “Here and there/Far and near” by Whitehorse-based artist Jane Isakson. Seated on a bench in the room, there are still images to the left and the right. They change like slides, but in a twitchy way. Sometimes they zoom in and out. They have been made to pass through cardboard frames, which softens two or three edges of the images. A shadow fell at the upper right corner of one of the projections though. It appeared to be cast by a piece of tape, but again, did the tape just let go accidentally? Or is this something to be considered when viewing the images? In the main gallery, Isakson’s large-scale paintings blend an adept intimacy with painting landscape, a sensitive investigation of acrylic paint, and a geometric exploration of location within the

landscape. In the works that make up her show, Points of Reference/ Fracturing the Sublime, Isakson draws lines across the landscape. They mimic the beams of light one sometimes sees in wide, open northern places. They offset the image, so mountain slopes don’t quite line up. In “They are there, Svalbard,” the lines converge on a heap of stuff surrounded by poles, giving me the impression of a garbage dump surrounded by an electric fence to keep bears out. In “I am here, Svalbard,” the lines converge on a point in the nearmiddle ground. The orange underpainting that peeks out makes the spots where the lines meet feel like a bonfire. Taken as a whole, this exhibit takes us to different “norths” than we usually inhabit here in Whitehorse. At the same time, our experiences as fellow northerners give us common ground to connect with these artworks. Topophilia and Points of Reference/Fracturing the Sublime will be on display at the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery until May 18. The gallery is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and before performances.

 Jane Isakson’s ‘’They are there, Svalbard’’ uses lines that unsettle the landscape, shifting the images so the slopes don’t line up, and converge on what seems to be a dump

cool, open feeling struck me as I walked into the current show in the main gallery at the Yukon Arts Centre. An aqua-blue wall, a glimpse of glaciers painted on spacious canvas and metal sculptures evoked this feeling. The gallery features the work of two circumpolar artists, mostly responding to time spent in Svalbard. A chain of islands belonging to Norway, located between 74 and 81 degrees north, Svalbard’s history includes industrial resource extraction and serving as a jumping-off point in the race to get to the North Pole. In Topophilia (it means “a love of the land”), Finland artist Kaisu Koivisto creates sculptures that draw inspiration from the openwork metal crane-like structures used to load boats. Her sculptures adorn, protect or grow from utilitarian objects, including dishes, a boot, a pink child’s croc, or bicycle helmets. In “Protector I” and “II” Koivisito’s metal rods trace the vents in the helmets, making them seem like masks. Two ear-like structures point upwards from the oval face-like forms, suggesting the ears of, perhaps, a bear and a rabbit. Koivisto’s photographs are nostalgic. Three large prints look back at a place left behind. “Leaving Pyramiden” (Pyramiden is a place in Svalbard) shows the viewer, over two sheets of paper, the sea and land on what seems like a misty, cool summer day. “Leaving Qoornok” shows the turquoise, frothy wake of a boat as we leave a snow-cloaked mountainous landscape in Qoornok,

Pawsitive Tails And baby makes five from cat in a wolverine suit

H

aving our second child was an interesting event. My lap had always been owned, lock stock and barrel, by Farley, our cat. As my pregnancy progressed and his lap space got smaller, he relocated his perch to more of a cross-belly lounge. He only became mildly disgruntled if baby got crowded and kicked. When Dougie came home from the hospital though … now that was a whole new ball game. Suddenly Farley had to compete for what was rightfully his. Farley’s ability to communicate with me was always clear and to the point. I’d been home from the hospital for about a week and was still trying to work out the baby’s schedule (and completely restructure my life!). My friend Vince, who’d recently moved into the trailer court, dropped by for a

visit. We settled ourselves with coffees and baby to chat. Farley was a fairly sociable guy, but usually kept his distance from visitors. He would approach them and acknowledge t h e i r existence with a casual tail stroke as he moseyed past them on his way to my lap. He enjoyed having lap and rubs when people came by, spreading his body along the length of my thighs with a paw on each knee, observing the visitor with half-lidded eyes as he purred and drooled while alternately puncturing my kneecaps with his kneading claws. This day, he strolled in to the living room and surveyed the offending object in my (his) lap and frowned. With a great stretch and a flip of his tail, he dismissed the baby and I, turned to Vince and leapt into his lap! Vince is a cat person, so it wasn’t a big deal for him. But I was surprised as Farley never snuggled with casual acquaintances. And snuggle he did. He made a huge production of kneading Vince, bunting his chin with the top of his head, then sprawling in Vince’s lap like a Vargas Girl, belly up, with a satisfied smirk on his face. The entire time he kept me fixed with his penetrating green stare

as though to say, “See, you’re not the only one. I can get my loving somewhere else if I so choose.” From that day forth he always had a kind of love/hate relationship with Dougie. He loved to sleep in the crib, loved to eat teething biscuits fed to him from Dougie’s chubby fist. He kept watch on the baby and let me know that he expected the squalling brat to be tended to before he started to cry, not after. As Dougie grew older, Farley submitted to an equal sharing of attention between us and basically decided that Dougie would be his pet. Farley tolerated almost any indignity that the tot put him through except the face-inthe-belly snuggle. Farley had the softest fur, thick and fine like a prime lynx pelt. His top colours were a blend of charcoal, gray and tawny beige, which gave him a wolverine-like appearance. His belly fur was a luxurious pillow of creamy softness flecked with little black spots. Dougie couldn’t resist shoving his face into that fat, cottony belly at any opportunity. This action would immediately result in Farley seizing the boy’s entire head in a grip like a beartrap. I’d have to extricate the shrieking child with a smack to Farley’s behind. Needless to say, all throughout his childhood, Dougie’s school photographs would feature a handsome little blond boy who looked like he’d been in a street brawl. You’d think the kid woulda learned, but he always went back for more! Fortunately there was no permanent scarring.
