Birds of a feather flock together by Shyloh van Delft

O

n a cold February day in 1993, local biologists Cameron Eckert, Pam Sinclair, Wendy Nixon and the late Helmut Grünberg met over coffee, determined to fill a major gap in Yukon’s birding community. While there was a strong body of knowledge and research underway, there was no public organization in place to support Yukon birding and birds. The four resolved to move forward and, on March 5, 1993, held the Yukon Bird Club’s (YBC) founding meeting at the Whitehorse Public Library. “We were shocked—it was just packed. It was pretty clear that

people were wanting this to happen for some time” said Eckert. The club’s first board immediately got to work on the first newsletter and an array of field trips and “it‘s been an incredible ride ever since!” said Eckert. Since its creation, the YBC has hosted around a thousand field trips and events, publishing regular newsletters (The Warbler), several bird checklists and an atlas of Yukon birds (Birds of the Yukon Territory.) YBC has also advocated for

several bird-related conservation initiatives and has significantly enhanced knowledge of the territory‘s birds. But its greatest success has been helping residents and visitors get out to see and enjoy birds through free public field trips and events. Hosted by volunteers in Whitehorse and the communities, one of the most popular YBC events has been the annual Yukon Birdathon, a fundraiser held each May. The event, recently renamed the Helmut Grünberg Birdathon (in honour

The Yukon Bird Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Members gather for field trips, bird counts and birding events throughout the year of Helmut‘s passion for birds and long-time dedication to birding), was started by the Yukon Conservation Society in the early ‚80s. For the last 40 years, it has been run mainly by Jim Hawkings. Another YBC initiative that stands out is one that aimed to protect McIntyre Creek. Before Friends of McIntyre Creek was established, YBC members were the lone voices advocating to city council on behalf of the creek as an important wilderness wetland, watershed and movement corridor for wildlife. Other YBC conservation advocacy has involved Shallow Bay, Swan Lake, the Beaver and LaBiche Rivers, the Mayo area, Ear Lake and more. “And it’s not always opposing some sort of development plan, it’s also trying to work with people to make sure bird habitat concerns are taken into consideration,” Eckert said. cont’d on page 3 ...

Every year brings something new, and the YBC has seen a lot of change since 1993. “To me, the greatest changes have come recently with the emergence of eBird as a wonderful means for all birdwatchers to contribute to knowledge on Yukon birds. This has been helped by the advent of the internet, digital photography, GPS, smartphones and social media, especially the Yukon Birds Facebook Group, which has offered an entire new forum for the exchange of bird information among enthusiasts and citizen scientists,” said Hawkings. Attracting the attention of young people is a challenge faced by many societies, but it is integral to the long-term resilience of the YBC. “I‘m really hopeful and encouraged by the new generati-

on of people getting involved in the club and I hope this trend continues,” said Hawkings. Over the last 25 years, the YBC has been a strong promoter of bird conservation, awareness and appreciation. The YBC will be celebrating its 25th birthday at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre on Thursday, April 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be guest presentations by Katie Aitken, Shyloh van Delft, Cameron Eckert, Dave Mossop and Ted Murphy-Kelly. There will also be door prizes and, of course, birthday cake. This is a free public event, open to all ages, so come celebrate with your friends and family.

ily is an energetic dog. At three months old, it was abnormal for her to sleep for three solid hours in the middle of the day. That was the first sign that something was off. The second was that, when owner Daniel Guhl woke her, she was wobbly on her legs. Disoriented enough that Guhl took her immediately to All Paws Veterinary Clinic. From there, he said the diagnosis came pretty quick. “The vet took one look at her and asked, ‘Is there any weed in the house?’” There wasn’t, but as Guhl thought back over the course of the day, he remembered catching Lily on a walk with something ashy in her mouth. At the time, he thought it was the butt end of a firework. In light of her behaviour, it seemed more likely she’d scored herself a roach. At the time, it wasn’t funny. Only in retrospect, now that Lily’s ok, can Guhl see the humour in it. “I thought she might develop the munchies or something,” he said, laughing. “She was asleep and would wake up and look like she was on a boat she was so shaky. Her motor skills were so slow. She would look at you and almost not realize you were there.” Guhl said the vet was good about it. That they told him not

to worry—that there’s been an increase, since legalization, in the number of pets being brought in high. Kim Friedenberg, with Alpine Veterinary Clinic, said he did an informal poll of the six staffers and found that a third of them think there have been more stoned dogs brought in since weed was legalized last October. Others aren’t sure, or think it’s gotten better. “One person did mention the containers it’s supplied in are more dog-proof than a plastic baggie,” he said. “So there’s that.” Friedenberg said signs and symptoms of a weed-eating woofer include much of what Lily experienced. Often, dogs sway, have trouble walking, or can’t even stand up. Sometimes they’ll drool or have dilated pupils. They can also pee themselves and simply lie in it because they lose control and have no idea what’s going on.

He said he didn’t notice people being particularly cagey about the issue before legalization and would urge people not to feel embarrassed or selfconscious about it now. There’s patient-client confidentiality, he said, so it’s not like your vet is going to run off and narc on you for being a bad dog-owner. As well, he said, the test for determining weed intoxication is pricey and not incredibly reliable. If you suspect they ate weed, telling your vet can save time and expense, so you can get down to the business of treating your pet. Often, this includes simply supporting the symptoms, said Friedenberg. Often that’s a case of rehydrating them, which could include being on an IV if the dog is extremely dehydrated. “It’s always a good idea to bring them in and get checked out,” Friedenberg said. “Or just call us and we can decide from there.”

there,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s always surprising how many people come forward and share their own experience in the family.” The funds are used to pay for things like childcare or a pet sitter, snow removal, food, monthly bills, heating and many other expenses that do not stop, even though a person is fighting cancer. As of March 2019, the fund has assisted 184 Yukoners from across the territory.

So please, this Denim Day, wear your jeans and buy a button to show your support. Little by little, five dollars becomes a lot.” The event will encourage Yukoners to share their participation on social media on April 24 using #YukonDenimDay. very little bit helps. That’s the philosophy behind Yukon Denim Day and the support that Yukoners Cancer Care Fund provides to individuals affected by cancer. Yukoners can purchase a Denim Day button at participating businesses and know that the five dollar fee for the button will go towards the fund. “The fund itself recognizes that we’re all different, but the effects of cancer are brutal for everyone,” said Philip Fitzgerald, Yukon Hospital Foundation chair. “The low cost means that everyone who wants can contribute.” The event itself is a fun community event that gets everyone involved in supporting other Yukoners in need. The Yukoners Cancer Care Fund started in 2013 to help all individuals diagnosed with cancer (with the exception of breast cancer, which has Karen’s Fund for assistance) and started disbursing funds in 2014. Recipients can receive a one-time gift of $1,000 to assist with costs that may be difficult to cover during cancer treatment. “It’s meant to be a little bit extra for those costs that are still

Richard’s Tire Tips

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition. Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

Dan Sokolowski and his planning board

D

an Sokolowski is about three weeks away from launching the 20th edition of the Dawson City International Short Film Festival (DCISFF) when we sit down in his corner of the building that’s home to the Klondike Institute of Art of Culture. (KIAC.) A lot of work has already gone into this year’s event. The 85 films that will be shown (five more than 2018) were selected over the course of the last five months, during regular screenings attended by roughly 30 people. Sokolowski points to the 10 rows of multi-coloured post-it notes on the cabinet doors behind him. He’s figuring out screening locations. Most films will appear on the big screen in the KIAC Ballroom, with capacity crowds filling the seats from Thursday evening to Sunday evening. One screening of aboriginal themed films will be held at

PHOTO: Dan Davidson the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. Before all that can happen though, he has to finish two to three weeks of downloading the digital videos and organizing the playlists. It’s all digital these days. Thirteen years ago, when he took the job, he remembers receiving VHS tapes and DVDs, with perhaps a one gigabyte file arriving by email. This year, he downloaded three films in one 48 gig file, worrying about whether the local bandwidth could handle it. “The cameras keep getting better and the files keep getting bigger,” he said, noting these are well beyond the size of the Blu-ray and HD files people are playing on their home systems. The festival will begin, as has become the custom, with one long film on the Thursday evening. Local filmmaker Chris Healey has produced a 73-minute feature called The Winter Folk. Sokolowski said it should attract quite an audience. “It’s full of lots of Dawsonites

and why they live here.” This is a short film festival, so most of the 85 films will be under 20 minutes in length; indeed some will be much, much shorter. A typical screening will have a mix of animation, documentary, genre fiction and experimental video. Anywhere from eight to 12 pieces will screen in a couple of hours. “There are a lot of documentary items this year. These tend to be popular in Dawson.” There is also an increasing number of Yukon films, with 23 coming “from Old Crow to Whitehorse and all parts in between.” Thirteen years ago there might have been four or five. The number of aboriginal films is also on the rise. “Indigenous directors are telling their own stories,” said Sokolowski. “Getting access, and being able to make them.” In the ODD Gallery, Jillian McDonald, former artist-in-residence, will premiere the piece she made while in residence. The video installation shows various Dawsonites, wrapped in gold, shot against various landscapes. It will open formally on Friday and be available at various times during the weekend. There will also be a special 20th Anniversary event on Sunday night. “For our final screening, each member of our film fest committee has picked one of their favourite films from the last 20 years,” he said. “So it’s going to be a retro screening of what people liked.” Sokolowski will have to digitize some of those old tapes and DVDs (“They’re stored in boxes out back.”) for this to happen. The program for the weekend is not yet set, but there will also be a selection of workshops and panel discussions. The annual Trailer Contest is already underway. “We’re also pleased to be doing

a pre-festival workshop with director Caroline Christie. She’s going to be in town editing Suzanne Crocker’s new film and so she’s going to offer an editing workshop on April 7,” said Sokolowski. SPYA (Screen Production Yukon Association) will be offering a reception for the festival on Saturday. There will also be a youth screening that day. As Easter weekend is later in the season this year, the outdoor pirogue feed and street concert will be able to take place without the members of the band freezing their fingers.

SPIRIT OF THE TIMES Atomic Vaudeville and Larrikin Entertainment team up to present a North-of-60 cabaret at the Old Fire Hall April 16-27 by Ken Bolton

T

he German term zeitgeist is generally rendered in English as the spirit of a given time, as shown in prevailing thought or customs. (Think, perhaps, how Carnaby Street reflected the social values of mid-1960s Britain.) In 2019, are Yukon audiences ready for an evening of music and comedy that offers a glimpse at the zeitgeist of contemporary life North of 60? British Columbia theatre-makers Britt Small and Jacob Richmond think they are. So does Australian ex-pat Katherine McCallum. Small and Richmond are the co-founders of Victoria’s Atomic Vaudeville company, which has been staging popular cabaret shows on an ongoing basis for the past 15 years. They also put on such stage hits as Ride the Cyclone and Legoland. McCallum is artistic executive producer of Larrikin Theatre, a professional Whitehorse company she founded in 2015 after leaving the artistic director’s chair at the Guild Theatre. Last year, after attending an Atomic Vaudeville cabaret in Victoria, McCallum approached the company’s artistic producer (Small) and artistic director (Richmond) with the idea of collaborating on a similar project in Whitehorse. “We came up in September for three days and did kind of a ‘comedy creation’ workshop with a group of people. This was sort of a dream idea, but we didn’t know if people would support it financially,” Small explained. Once McCallum secured the necessary funding, the pair returned with a couple of Victoria-based actors in tow, to audition potential local performers. In January, they came to Whitehorse looking for local writers to provide insights into Yukon life. “That was really great, to get a sense of what the feeling was from people, of where they live and who the people were and what were the big issues, all kinds of stuff like that,” Small said. “I think that’s when the cabaret works best, when it grows out of the community that it’s per-

forming for.” Small had recently completed a master’s degree in theatre and was trying to eke out a living as a performer when she met Richmond, who had worked in cabaret shows in Montreal before moving west. “And I was noticing a shift in how people were viewing live performances. There was more and more burlesque happening at that time. Standup was starting to come back in a different way, even drag at that time. So there was a lot more diversity in that field,” she said. “He (Richmond) went away on a writing retreat and while he was away I rented a venue and made a poster. When he came back, I said, ‘we’re doing a cabaret,’” Small said, laughing. “That’s kind of how we started. Originally, we would do them almost once a month, which was insane.” As the format evolved, it adopted satirical conventions such as those used in the South Park animated TV series. “To take issues that were happening, either in our community, or in our world, and kind of find a parallel to that, essentially.” Sometimes, Small explained, they might reuse an established character or update a certain ‘bit’ because it has a good story structure, but past storylines don’t matter at all. Each one is very much its own unique show. It becomes a little bit like a study of the moment, of what’s going on, so that way it always feels contemporary and fresh. It will feel like it was written yesterday. That’s the vibe the collaborating companies hope to achieve with North of the Sixtieth Parallel: A Zeitgeist Cabaret, which will run later this month as part of the Yukon Arts Centre’s residency program. Although the title calls it a cabaret, Small admits the show falls somewhere along the revue/ vaudeville/burlesque/cabaret spectrum. “I think we’re going to have to invent a new name, kind of like rhapsody, only for theatre. In some

ways, it has the most in common with the musical. A musical rhapsody. A theatrical musical rhapsody, maybe,” she said. Small feels it’s an appropriate form to capture the current zeitgeist. “It’s very much dealing with what people are thinking about and including as many people as possible in that conversation and distilling it from there so you get a sense of ‘we the people,’ which I think is a really good way to think right now,” she said. Beside Richmond and Small as principal writers, the show includes contributions from McCallum, Angela Drainville, Jenny Hamilton, Claire Ness and Rex Ternalcom. The opening premise finds “outsider” Sarah Murphy sharing her first impressions of Whitehorse with McCallum, the transplanted Australian, who quickly presents a different perspective. Others in the core cast of 12 include Drainville, Jane Gaudet, Chris Hine, Jeremiah Kitchen, Chris Lovatt, Jim McGeragle, Kelly Scott, Kaori Torigai, Grant Waters and Brandon Wicke. They will be joined on various nights by special “celebrity” Yukon guests such as Claire Ness and Brenda Barnes. Some of the sketches include an attempt to establish a boy band, a Robin Hood-style riff on Bernie Sanders and contemporary capitalism, and a look at who gets targeted for tourism marketing, and how. Small said new material might get added right until opening night. “A lot of it will be set, but we always like to keep pieces a little bit floating.” North of the Sixtieth Parallel: A Zeitgeist Cabaret runs Tuesdays to Saturdays from April 16 to April 27 at the Old Fire Hall. Show time is 8 p.m., with no late admissions.

Ken Bolton is a freelance writer and former co-editor of What’s Up Yukon.

for a long time and recently published her first collection, contractions, with American publisher, Red Moon Press. (She published under the name kjmunro.) “The poems are contractions of my life and experiences. Many are clearly influenced by my years living in the Yukon,” Munro said, adding that the poems date from 2010 to 2018, when she first began seriously sending work out to be published. Munro is originally from Vancouver, but has lived in the Yukon since 1991. She is membership secretary for Haiku Canada, a member of the League of Canadian Poets and is active in Yukon Writers’ Collective Ink. In 2014, she founded solstice haiku, a haiku discussion group in Whitehorse that she continues to facilitate. Munro has read her poetry, delivered workshops and made presentations at literary events in both Canada and the United States. In 2013, she received an Advanced Artist Award from the Government of Yukon and used it to attend Piper’s Frith, a writing retreat in Newfoundland where her instructor was Don McKay, poet and member of the Order of Canada. Munro will go on a tour to

present her book in western Canada and Washington State. As most of us have learned in

It is a fine line.” Writing a haiku takes time. “Sometimes a haiku arrives in my head fully formed, requiring no revision, but, more often, when something that I observe or experience strikes me as something to write about, I create half a haiku. Then I can spend some time editing and revising it to create the final version. In some cases this takes years. Usually it is more like hours or days.” Munro added that she has been a serious student of the genre for 10 years and there is still so much more to learn about it. She said she’s always working on something. At the moment, she’s writing poetry and a memoir. Munro will launch her book on April 17, International Haiku Day. Grey Matters with Lillian Nakamura Maguire

S

eventy years of accumulation of stuff—that’s what I have in addition to my husband’s “resource,” as he so fondly calls his stuff. Somehow the amount of stuff we collected over 47 years of living together seems to fill our living and outdoor space. We have a small two-bedroom house, plus a cabin, large workshop, sea can storage unit, a barn and 15.5 acres. When my parents died my siblings and I had to go through their belongings. We rummaged through two garages full of carpentry tools, wood, fasteners and all the other items that might be needed by a cabinet maker and general handyman. Some of us took bits of memorabilia home. I chose an old-fashioned little wood stove with an internal water reservoir. It was installed in my greenhouse and used for a couple of seasons, but not within the last five years or more. I also have the dining room set, some Japanese dishes, art objects and a handmade Buddhist altar. All are reminders of my parents. There were many other material items that members of the family didn’t want or which had no meaning for them, but I couldn’t bear to throw them out. When I reached my 70th birthday, I finally came to the realization that I needed to start clearing out some of my own stuff. I had visions of my poor son or husband having to deal with all of my treasures when I died. I didn’t dare to touch any of my husband’s things. In Sweden, they call it döstädning or “deathcleaning.” Sounds kind of morbid doesn’t it? But in Margareta Magnusson’s book, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning - How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter, she approaches clearing

and other family memorabilia TOP RT: My messy office that

from fabric scraps out and downsizing in a humourous and uplifting way. You don’t have to be old to be thinking about downsizing. There are many “gurus” who have written books, blogs and produced videos on the topic of downsizing. It seems to be the latest craze. However, I decided to take my own approach based on some of these resources.

Why “death clean?” 1. I have the pleasure of giving away something I love or something that held meaning for me, to a person who will appreciate it. When I turned 70, I gave the directive of “no gifts” and I really meant it. In fact, every person was invited (coerced?) to take away at least one item from my collection

of good-quality treasures. These included clothing, dishes, books, ornaments, jewelry, linens and other household items. It proved to be a wonderful opportunity to share stories about each item and how the person planned to use it. In fact a pastamaking machine resulted in a dinner invitation at a friend’s place a few weeks later! I’ve also asked family members and others if they would like to have specific items. When they say “no thanks,” I feel free to either sell it, donate it to the local thrift store or give it away to a friend.

2. Spending one last moment with the item I’m giving away. Many of us have so many things around us that we often forget about them and fail to appreciate where they came from, who gave them to us, what events surround the item and all the memories associated with it. To me, giving thanks for the pleasure that I received, or perhaps in contrast, letting go of pain, is an important ritual. Saying good-bye or letting go of the past and moving on helps me through my life transitions. Clearing out unwanted items has a way of decluttering my mind. After I’ve cleaned out a file cabinet, bookshelf, kitchen cupboard or closet, I feel lighter and more energized. I also make a promise not to buy or accept more stuff. 3. Creative outlet for me and others. I used to be an avid sewer and loved to collect fabric for potential projects. In the last 10

years, my eyesight has been failing me for fine, detailed work. I gave a lot of the materials to a local fibre artist who has used it for her beautiful work. I made cloth napkins and runners from the remaining cottons. At birthday celebration, guests were invited to take them away after the party. 4. Conversations about transitions This is probably the most difficult part of death cleaning—facing my own mortality and helping loved ones to face my death in the future as well. For some of us this downsizing might be due to a transition in our life such as changes in health or moving out of the family home after the death of a partner. There’s often an uncomfortable silence when one begins to talk about death and dying. We have cultural differences and various attitudes and perspectives on death and dying. These conversations require sensitivity and respect. Whether one is seven or 70 years old, taking time to sort, getting rid of unwanted items or simplifying one’s life is something we can do at any stage of life. Why not get to that spring cleaning now? Lillian Nakamura Maguire, a retired rural Whitehorse resident, enjoys writing plays, personal essays and haiku, and exploring other creative expressions.

Digging into commitment

B.C. musician brings accordion music to Whitehorse on April 12 by y Amy Kenny

J

ack Garton stood in a cemetery on Galiano Island, talking on his cell phone about his latest record. It seems like a weird place to field media requests, until you consider that Garton’s day job, as cemetery sexton, seems to have influenced the album in a way. “I think a lot about how fragile our lives are and how temporary things are. When I write a song, mostly I think about what my kids and my grandkids are going to want to know about me after I’m gone,” he said of Love You Over Time, his second album. “So always about my failures and successes in love and commitment and stuff like that.” Garton is touring the record around the west coast of the U.S. and Canada this spring, with a stop in Whitehorse, at The Local Bar, on April 12. He’s played in the Yukon previously and made friends with local musician Ryan McNally, which is who connected him with the venue and with Garton’s opener, Paris Pick and the Pricks. “I’m psyched to come up. It’s been a favourite place for me for touring. I love it,” he said. “We’re just really grateful to the community up there that seems to have jumped on this show.”

“We” is Garton’s band, The Demon Squadron. Together, they play a brand of Louisiana Zydecoinspired music that Garton calls a mix of rock and roll, R&B, Cajun flavour, and something else that’s not really country or blues, but also, is both at the same time. Almost the only thing the music wasn’t, for a long time, was guitarbased. “I used to be almost militant about not having guitars because we were accordion-based and we had to be different,” he said. “But when we started playing with Joel (Fernandes) because he’s a friend, it just sounded too good and I thought it was too good not to do it.” “We kind of really gelled. I don’t know what it is. The short answer is this magic combination of people, and once we get rocking, (the music) is just more highenergy than it was before.” So much so that Garton held back some of the songs slated for Love You Over Time because they were recorded pre-Fernandes. Those will appear, in a different form, on a new record, which Garton has already written with this new dance-y, higher-energy sound in mind. Where the music remains the same is in the lyrics. He said his

songs always end up kind of being about the same stuff. His first record explored commitment and the idea of being recently married. The new one is basically the same, with a more nuanced view. The third is similar. “What I write about is, in a word, commitment, to yourself and the people and things you love. I found that when I was writing the first record, I had this sort of heroic idea of I was going to really get down to it and finally commit to the things that I love and then the second album was kind of … I realized that the things you love, you can’t help but commit to them. It’s not even an act of will in the same way that I thought it was. It’s like you just turn around one day and you realize you just keep doing it.” Jack Garton and the Demon Squadron play The Local Bar on April 12. Visit JackGarton.com for more information.

Amy Kenny lives in Whitehorse. Among other things, she works as a copy editor for What’s Up Yukon. If she’s not inside writing, she’s outside running mountains.
