he melting season is upon us with a vengeance, spoiling all the plans I had for a series of columns about street clearances in Dawson. On March 7, I had a lovely photo of the large piles of snow along Front Street, showing the work done by the department of highways crew, which has control over what is actually the last bit of the Klondike Highway before it runs down to the ferry landing. They were impressive little mountains that were there long enough for youngsters to discover

them and clamber on them before they were loaded onto the dump trucks and taken to their final melting place. It was a bit later that the town’s contractor began to clear the hard-packed snow off the internal streets. Above Fifth Avenue, this generally seems to take the form of ploughing it up along the sides of the streets, leaving holes for the garbage truck to be able to get at the waste bins, and clearing driveway openings where these exist. In the downtown core, things

Front Street looked this way on March 7

generally get a bit confusing for a few days, between King Street and Church, north to south, and Fifth to Front, east to west. A grader loosens the surface and then turns the streets into temporary boulevards, sometimes blocking the intersections for a few hours and making driving around a bit of a puzzle for those who are out shopping. It’s a nuisance for a few days, then they take it all away. It has to be done or the melting snow would dissolve our streets into mucky swamps. We don’t avoid that entirely, but three decades of memory tells me it could be a lot worse than it is. What is odd this year it that the windows are so small. Some years I have parked our little Yaris beside these mountains of snow to show how tall they are. They’re above the roof. This year, there would have been no point. They would not have reached the windows. I took some pictures, but the cont’d on page 3 ...

snow piles were soon gone, leaving puddles behind them as the City of Dawson crews scrambled to thaw out the storm drains to let the water go away. A shot at the corner of Fifth and Queen just outside the school, showed the feeble remains of one clearance and the small lake it created. It is normal for the streets to be largely cleared by the time of the Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race, and for a combination of city and highway workers to need to lay some loose snow on King and Front Streets to allow the race to begin there. This year, with unseasonably warm daily temperatures, there was no hope of doing this any time but in the early hours before the 10 a.m. start time. It’s generally between -15° and -20° when the race begins. This year it was +1.5°and the conditions on the river were so iffy that the race was not able to go all the way to Eagle, Alaska. Less than one week later, the town is all puddles everywhere you look. People have had to stop crossing the river on anything heavier than a skidoo or shank’s mare. The ice pool tripod is in the river, and people are wondering just how early to put their guesses on their IODE tickets. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

reast cancer is one of the top three diagnosed cancers in the Yukon. One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. These are the staggering realities of breast cancer. Early detection is critical in beating this disease. That is why the Run for Mom committee (and the entire Yukon Territory) has been relentless at fundraising for state-of-theart diagnostic equipment, such as the mammography machine and the breast ultrasound at Whitehorse General Hospital. Funds from Run for Mom have also decorated the mammography suite at the hospital, designed special gowns for ladies to wear during their exams, and financially supported Paddlers Abreast, a Yukon River Quest team. All of this has been made possible by the continued financial support of the Yukon community each year at Run for Mom. Run for Mom in Whitehorse is celebrating its 21st year. The event takes place on Mother’s Day, May 12, at the SS Klondike. Registration begins at 12 p.m.

This year’s theme is “When life gives you lemons…..” When you see folks around town wearing a Run for Mom shirt, it serves as a reminder that our community is dedicated to supporting breast health and raising awareness about breast cancer. Go to RunForMom.com to download the pledge form. Get sponsored by family, friends, coworkers and neighbours. It’s easy! Hand in your pledge sheets and donations the day of the event. Run For Mom is thrilled to announce that several rural communities are hosting their own Run for Mom events this year. Weather Talk with Mike Gladish

I

attended David Phillip’s lecture on weather and climate change in early March and was inspired to write a series of articles with the goal of elaborating on many points that he made in his ‘factoid’ filled presentation. First up is the jet stream. The illustration below is taken from the US National Weather Service. (NOAA) It shows the typical line on the map that represents the jet stream, but it misses one important point. The jet stream is not a line or an entity, or even a river as described below. It is a strong wind that results when air masses are being pushed together. Not labelled in the illustration are the arctic air mass, equatorial air mass and the mid-latitudes where there are modified air masses. On a very basic level, the jet stream is the boundary between cold and warm air. The polar regions of the world create cold air masses, especially in winter, when there is very little sunshine. The equatorial region produces warm air on a year-round basis. Cold air is dense and flows away from the polar regions. Warm air is less dense and rises. The mid-latitudes are where modified air masses are

created. All of this air is trapped within the Earth’s gravitational field in a layer called the troposphere. That relatively thin layer is about 6,000 to 9,000 metres thick, about the height of Mount Everest. The restricted space of the troposphere means that the warm and the cold air masses will end up pushing against each other. The forces between the air masses are affected by the relative density of the air, the spin of the Earth, the time of year, the Earth’s surface and the latitude. As my weather instructor told me in very unscientific terms, the force created when air masses push against each other is similar to the force that will eject a watermelon seed when squeezed between your thumb and forefinger! Who hasn’t done that? The watermelon seed represents the jet stream! The pushing between the arctic air masses and warmer air masses forms the jet stream and it tends to flow from west to east due to the spin of the Earth. At high altitudes, there is less resistance from the Earth’s surface, so the wind speed is maximized and can be 250 to 300 kph. The other fac-

tors, already mentioned, create waves in the jet stream that result in an oscillating wave around the planet. These waves can most easily be observed at the 6,000 metre level in the atmosphere, which is about the height of Mount Logan. TV weather now includes this upper air information as a colour graphic, known as the 500mb level. Blue and red represent cold and warm air. It is a big improvement in helping the public to understand weather. The upper air data is obtained by soundings that are done twice a day, in Whitehorse and at stations around the world. Generally, there are about four to six waves in the jet stream circling the globe at any given time. These waves are bulges of cold air pushing south and warm air pushing north. The ‘polar vortex’ happens to be a trough in one of the waves, which is simply a southward bulge of the arctic air mass. These bulges can break away from the main arctic air mass and travel as far south as Maui, creating winter rain and wind and even some snow on top of Mount Haleakala. In recent winters, we have heard big headlines about warm air invading the arctic. The phenomenon is not new. Warm air is pushed into the arctic regions when the cold air, the dreaded

On a very basic level, the jet stream is the boundary between cold and warm air

GRAPHICS: NOAA US National Weather Service

What is the jet stream?

Jet streams are often indicated by a line on a weather map indicating the location of the strongest wind. However, jet streams are wider and not as distinct as a single line, but are actually regions where the wind speed increases toward a central core of greatest strength. One way of visualizing this is to consider a river. The river’s current is generally the strongest in the center with decreasing strength as one approaches the river’s bank. Therefore, it is said that jet streams are “rivers of air”. ‘polar vortex,’ pushes southward, (usually over Toronto, where most of our media headlines originate.) The restricted space within our troposphere means that when cold air displaces warm air, it has to move somewhere. Sometimes the warm air pushes well north of the Arctic Circle. The jet stream is at the leading edge of these air masses. News headlines such as ‘a loopy jet stream’ and ‘polar vortex’ create drama and even fear but knowing more about the atmosphere and weather patterns can help us to understand unusual or extreme weather. The atmosphere is a complicated mixture of gases affected by differential heating and cooling and there is no doubt that human activities are part of the equation. More on that in future articles. Mike Gladish has a certificate in Basic and Advanced Meteorology and 10 years experience as a weather observer and briefer.

Self-care as a daily practice Caring for yourself is not self-indulgence, it is about self-preservation and strength by Selene Vakharia

L

iving in today’s world can mean being bombarded by awful news about sexualized assault, microaggressions and violence in many forms. All this negative news can be frustrating, overwhelming and downright exhausting. If you’re starting to feel burnt out, you are not alone. This year, the annual Sexualized Assault Prevention Month campaign is spotlighting the need for self-care. Whether you’re working on the frontlines, a survivor, or just feeling worn out, taking care of yourself is essential to resilience. On May 14, as part of the campaign, the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre will host an evening all about self-care, empowerment, resiliency and community. Local experts will be sharing their know-how, products and services with a night of presentations and a mini-expo. In anticipation of the event, Some self-care experts and gender equality advocates share their self-care tips.

Jess Stone & Samantha Lacourse

Jess and Samantha both work on the frontlines supporting people and our community. In careers where they are constantly confronted with trauma, and burnout is considered normal, self-care can be critical to being able to survive and thrive. “When exposed to the amount

of violence, racism, systemic oppression as we see day in and day out, it’s necessary to nurture your own resiliency and spread that strength as far and wide as you can. To be able to continue to work in front-line, crisis support work, I find it is absolutely required to build self-care and community care into the work that I do and acknowledge it for what it is— work.” Self-care is hard work, but it’s work Jess finds is worth doing. “It’s extremely hard to get honest about your needs and vulnerabilities and scary life adulting things that seem too steep to conquer, but it’s my favourite way to take care of myself, aside from a piece of delicious chocolate.”

The Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre is presenting a workshop on skills for self-care pects of one’s own inner voice that are hateful, self-shaming, self-critical, to see that voice as an amalgamation of harmful external narratives, and to let that voice, or those voices, know that they are not welcome.”

“Self care isn’t face masks and bubble baths, it’s being aware of your self, your emotions, and managing those.” ... Andrea Stratis Andrea Stratis

Andrea Stratis runs Andrea Stratis Consulting and helped form the Northern Gender Alliance, a Yukon-based non-profit that works to provide information and services to transgender, non-binary and two-spirit people in the North. “First and foremost, it’s important to recognize self-care as not being self-indulgent or narcissistic. The hardest part I always have with looking after myself is telling myself it’s okay to take time for it.” Self-care is an essential part of Andrea’s daily routine and one

managing those. These are skills I, myself, am also just trying to learn and get better at and that have come through self-reflection, therapy, and also making mistakes and learning from them.”

Fabienne Calvert Filteau

Fabienne will be presenting and offering simple, basic acupuncture treatments at the May 14 event. Fabienne believes in building self-care into our everyday lives and in the power of profound self-compassion as an essential part of the self-care toolkit. “An ability to recognize as-

that has been built up over time. “A habit I’ve gotten into, thanks to a therapist who pushed me to do it, is writing down every morning how I’m feeling and one thing about myself that I’m aware of that I enjoy. This time can be 10 minutes, an hour, however much time you have. But it’s about taking stock of yourself, spending time with yourself and knowing where you are. create healthy boundaries, ask for the help one needs and find time to do the things that matter most. One of the biggest components of self-care that is universal to all is intentionally creating a circle of supportive, loving, like-minded people in various parts of our community who get us, understand the challenges we’re up against as we understand theirs, with whom to share nurturing and support, honesty and clarity.” An Evening of Self-Care will be held on Wednesday, May 14 at the North of Ordinary Experience Centre from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Event details and tickets are available on Facebook and Eventbrite. Consumed by craft Writer Heather O’Neill will talk about her career

Heather O’Neill is returning to the Yukon for her second visit

H

eather O’Neill is pleased to be returning to the Yukon this year for another engagement during the Yukon Writers’ Festival and Young Author’s Conference. She was last here In 2016. “I love the sunlight in the Yukon,” she said. “Everything

seems surreal to me. I hope to meet more of the people in this strange land and speak about books and ideas.” She had an early love of books and now can’t imagine a life without writing. “I love words. I adore books. When I was little, I slept with them in my bed. All I wanted were books, books, books. I asked for them for my birthday and Christmas. “I love books more than anything else. I discovered how much I loved writing and I believed I had some talent at it.” When she was 21, she began writing at least part of every day, when she wasn’t working or looking after her daughter. “Writing in notebooks, on the back of napkins, typing away. I had no real interest in anything else. I began to feel alive when I wrote. It was an all-consuming passion. “It was then that I no longer wanted to become a writer, but rather, I was a writer. For better or worse, I had engaged on an addictive path I would never be able to renounce or sway from.” In 1999, she published a book of poems, two eyes are you sleeping. By the age of 33, she had a novel, Lullabies for Little Criminals. It would go on to win the Canada Reads contest in 2007, as well as the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction. It was also shortlisted for seven other major awards, in Canada and elsewhere.

Since then, there has been a second novel, The Girl Who was Saturday Night, a short story collection, Daydreams of Angels, magazine articles, two short films, and a third novel, The Lonely Hearts Hotel. Much of her fiction has been longlisted or shortlisted for awards and O’Neill has picked up National Magazine Awards for several stories. She was the winner of the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction again in 2017 and was on the jury for the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize. “I think it’s important to have an overriding theme,” she said. “And for my work to have a both philosophical and political angle. I’m going to spend a couple years at least working on a book and I need to engage with it in a way that is both fruitful to me and the text. “I become a different person as I explore the politics of my character’s existence. It’s a mode of thinking and I see every novel as a meditation that results in surprising conclusions and pushes my morality and conceits to extremes.” She believes that writing is a job that requires time and dedication. “I write every day, anywhere between 10 to 14 hours. I usually begin with sketches of ideas. I create small scenes to see what a character will look like on the page, also to feel what the voice of the novel and tone will sound

and feel like. This can take a long time, with much thrown out. “When I find a character and a world that intrigues me and seems beautiful and new to me, almost as though I am reading something by a stranger, I build a blueprint, an outline of a story, for them to exist within.” She’s looking forward to working with students at the Yukon Arts Centre on May 2 and 3. “I love working with high school students. I was recently in Paris conducting a workshop at a high school and the students wrote so beautifully. And they began discussing my work and one of the students told me how she believed the swans in my writings represented abuse in relationships. It was magical, the ideas that fiction stimulates in the young.” She advises young writers to persevere. “Start putting words on the page and showing them to people. Find any platform to publish on. You need to be active and putting pieces out in the world before getting a book deal. Everything you do counts and, even if it doesn’t seem like it, you are building a career.” Dan Davidson has been writing about books for Yukon publications since 1977. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Combine beef, pork, onion and salt and pepper. Spoon some meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf. Roll and secure with a toothpick, then place in casserole dish. Cover cabbage rolls with tomato juice. Bake slowly until done. YUMMY YORKSHIRE PUDDING INGREDIENTS 1 cup bread flour 1 tsp. salt 2 eggs 1 cup milk Beef drippings METHOD Sift flour and salt together. Beat eggs and milk with a fork, then pour into flour and beat vigorously for 2 minutes. Spoon beef drippings (¼-inch deep) into 8 muffin tins, heat in 450 F oven for a few minutes. Remove from oven and fill cups ⅔ full and return to 450 F oven for 20 minutes. Murray has some long-forgotten classic recipes, including hearty cabbage rolls INGREDIENTS 2 white onions, finely sliced Butter, for frying 2 cups breadcrumbs Water, to moisten Celery, finely sliced Parsley, finely chopped 6 minute steaks 1 can tomato soup (or mushroom)

METHOD (Sauce) Cook onions and garlic in hot oil until tender but not brown. Stir in remaining ingredients. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. (Meatballs) Soak bread in some water for 2 to 3 minutes, then squeeze out moisture. Combine bread with remaining ingredients, except oil, and mix well. Form into small balls and brown in hot oil. Add to spaghetti sauce and cook for 30 minutes longer. Serve over hot spaghetti. FORGOTTEN MINUTE STEAKS It seems that minute steaks are a forgotten table dish, so here is an oldie to bring the minute steak back to the table.

METHOD To make the dressing for the steaks, fry onions in butter until golden brown, then add 2 cups of breadcrumbs, celery and parsley (moisten with water). Cover each steak with dressing, then roll and secure each with a toothpick. Fry until browned, then place in roasting pan and cover with tomato soup (or mushroom soup). Bake until well done, in slow oven, at 350 F. CREAMED CHICKEN (from the 1940s) INGREDIENTS 4 tbsp. butter 4 tbsp. flour 1 ½ cups milk Dash of salt and pepper 2 cups chicken, cubed ½ cup canned peas ½ cup mushrooms 1 egg yolk

In a double boiler, make a white sauce with butter, flour, milk and salt and pepper, stirring with a fork until the sauce is smooth. Add the chicken, peas and mushrooms. Beat egg yolk in 2 tbsp. milk and pour into sauce. Cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Serve on toast or patty shells, or serve just as is. PORK PIES INGREDIENTS 1 lb. hamburger Salt and pepper, to taste 1 lb. ground pork Poultry dressing spice (or sage) 1 small white onion Flour (to thicken) Pie pastry METHOD Mix ingredients together and just cover with water. Simmer for an hour, then thicken the mixture with a little flour. Prepare pie pastry, line muffin tin with pastry and fill with mixture. Bake in hot oven until golden brown. Gavin Broadhead tests power in the vertical jump

Olympic dreams

New athlete identification program comes to Whitehorse by Amy Kenny

D

o you think you have what it takes to be an Olympian? So does Training Ground. That’s why the program is coming to the Yukon on May 11, to test athletes between the ages of 14 and 25. “We developed Training Ground from Podium Search in B.C.,” said Kurt Innes, director of talent development for the Canadian Sport Institute, which came up with Podium Search – a standardized fitness testing program that puts athletes through a series of basic field tests in order to identify future elite athletes. It was tweaked for a national audience when Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) found out about it a few years ago.

“RBC liked what we were doing,” said Innes. “I met with one of the VPs and had a quick conversation about how they would like to have a national program.” Enter Training Ground, established in 2016. After that initial conversation between Innes and RBC, there were four field testing days in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Halifax. By 2017, it had mushroomed to 30 field testing days. Each year, roughly 30 athletes are identified by Training Ground as potential future Olympians and offered funding and resources to support their participation in training camps, competitions away from home and new gear and equipment. Since 2016, nearly 6,000 athletes

Athletes from southern Canada perform RBC Training Ground events at sessions held earlier this year

have been tested, with over $1.3 million in funding supporting more than 80 athletes. This year marks the first time the event has come to the territories, though Innes said the hope is to visit the Northwest Territories and Nunavut next year as well. “As the tech lead of the program I’m always trying to stay ahead of where we can go next,” he said. “I’m aware of the culture of excellence that exists in the Yukon Territory.” He cited Olympic athletes including Jeane Lassen and Zach Bell, as well as the facilities at the Canada Games Centre. “You have it all there,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we could bring the program up there.” And what can aspiring athletes expect on May 11? Registered athletes (registration is free and can be done online at RBCTrainingGround. ca) will be measured for height, weight and arm span. After that, they’ll complete a 20-minute warmup before being tested on speed (via sprints), power (via vertical jump) and strength (via isometric midthigh pull.) They’ll also be tested on endurance by way of the beep test. This takes place in front of officials from the Canadian Olympic Committee and national sport organizations including Canada Snowboard, Speed Skating Athletics Canada, Canoe Kayak Canada, Cycling Canada, Rowing Canada, Rugby Canada, and Freestyle Ski Canada. Innes said he doesn’t want to see that scare off athletes who don’t think of themselves as Olympic material, or who don’t see themselves as competing in any of the abovementioned sports. “There is an elite slant to it but I would hate for that message to deter local athletes from coming to participate,” he said. “Every athlete should come and take part. They all get a kind of report card that shows them where they are (in terms of speed, power, strength and endurance).” Not only that, he said, the testing isn’t specific to the sports you’re already doing, so the results might lead you in a new direction as an athlete. Innes said he first met Bell in 2003 when Bell was wrestling. He was a good wrestler, but not quite good enough to go to the Olympics with the sport. But Bell wanted to

Vaughan Taylor tests for speed in the sprint go to the Olympics for something. Innes said cycling was identified as a strong sport for Bell, after he went through testing similar to Training Ground. Bell went on to compete in track cycling at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. One of the current athletes identified by Training Ground has a similar story, said Innes. Kelsey Mitchell was a soccer player at the University of Alberta when she was tested by Training Ground in 2017. Coaches were impressed by her performance on a stationary bike and she was chosen as a supported athlete. Mitchell is now a 2020 Olympic hopeful, having

come in sixth in the women’s sprint at the Hong Kong World Cup in early 2019. “We want every athlete to come and take part,” said Innes. “Come and see where you fit as an individual.” Training Ground takes place at the Canada Games Centre on May 11 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Homesick in Alberta

Dennis made a trip back to Whitehorse and some old stompin’ grounds

Hankering for a hunt and some cowboy coffee by Dennis Allen

I

was up in the Yukon last week working with Gwaandak Theatre on a series of radio plays based on legends from Old Crow. It was great to see all my Vuntut Gwich’in relatives and meet the famed Paul Kennedy from the CBC radio program, Ideas. He looks nothing like he sounds on radio. Is that an oxymoron? (Even though I failed my GED course three times, I’m still trying to sound like I’m a writer.) I’ve been living in Alberta for the last four years while my wife pursues a post-secondary education. I was at the university myself for a month and a half, but I kept dumping the mop pail and they had to let me go. I ended up getting a job at the “Big House,” a federal penal institution. I was so busy shaking hands with all the inmates that the warden thought I was hiding something on my resume. I had to reassure him that the North, being as it is, is like a small town. Over time, a guy gets to know most everybody. And with me playing my guitar in every twobit joint from Tuktoyuktuk to Teslin, you get acquainted with the rounders in town a might quick. I’d tell you some prison stories, but I’m under a federal gag order not to, so it’ll have to wait till I see you in the Pit sometime. At any rate, it was a breath of fresh air to get back “home” recently. Most folks know I’m originally from the Mackenzie Delta, but since we raised our kids in the Yukon, and they call it home, then I figure I’d best toe the family line. I can just hear my homies dissing me for making such a pre-

posterous statement. “You lowdown bannock-slapping, flapjackflipping, tea-boiling son of a biscuit-eatin’ man.” I know damned well I’ll get demoted to chief potscrubber on my next hunting trip back to the delta, but we made a life for our kids in the Yukon and our sights are set on getting back up once the dust settles.

Though I’ve gotten to know a few folks here in Alberta, I still get a hankerin’ for some good old Yukon folk; guys who know how to roll a smoke and make cowboy coffee on an open fire. My good buddy Roger is one of them original sourdoughs who got his feet wet in Dawson City back in the day. He’s got some great stories from that hippie era and

I love nothing more than to hear them over a good cuppa coffee. We had rehearsals for the show in the afternoons and I spent my mornings sauntering around town and getting reacquainted with all my old Sit-jah’s. Me and Roger hijacked Uncle Stephen Frost from the hospital where he was visiting his daughter, Jackie. He was glad to take a ride around town and act like a juvenile delinquent with me and Roger egging him on to tell us stories about his dog mushing days and the good times in the beer parlor at the old Whitehorse Inn. There was always a crowd around Paddy’s Hotdog Stand and I got to see more friends there then I ever did in the courthouse. His five-dollar smokies went down real good too after all that walking I was doing. We even got to play a few songs together on Saturday night at the Gold Pan Saloon. We used to pack the joint back in the day when I had a band called the Hellhounds. We were always on the bum for a bass player but seemed to pull off a three-set night and get everyone half throttled before they shut out the lights. I’m back here in Alberta now

and settling in for the night before I head off to work in the morning. I know the universe will align itself and one day I’ll be sitting under the stars again hunting moose with my buddies and telling them some old jail stories, but this time I’ll tell them from the outside. Baby Island standing by.

Iridium is one of the rarest and densest of earth’s natural elements. This element was only discovered in 1803 and the chemist Tennant most frequently gets the credit. The name iridium comes from the latin word “iris” which means rainbow. This is because of the muticoloured compounds found in iridium, not because it is rainbow coloured. Iridium is very resistant to corrosion, and is dense and brittle. Because of this, it is very hard to work unless it is heated to very high temperatures such as 1,200-1,500 degrees centigrade. Pure iridium is so rare because it is so dense and exists in the earth core, not the crust. That being said, it has been found in the crust, and there is speculation that is was caused by a meteor. More intriguing is that some link this meteor to the one that caused the dinosaurs extinction 66 millions years ago. So what do we learn from this element? Maybe that the part of us that is the densest and least likely to change, is buried so deep inside us that it takes only the greatest and most extreme event - like a meteor, to bring it to the surface? But we pay a price and lose something in the process. Where do you see iridium in Ayurveda your life? Massage Therapy

Air, Mind, Animals

Aristotle believed the earth was the centre of the universe, and even though this is incorrect, using his logical mind and mathematics he was still able to predict the movements of the planets with this incorrect theory. Strange. He is called by some the greatest philosopher, and he made significant contributions to mathematics, biology, physics, medicine etc. Yet, this great mind believed the earth was the centre of the universe and he “proved” that by predicting the movement of the planets. Right there, that gives me pause. Today, our culture has complete and absolute conviction that logic, mathematics, reasons is the foundation of all truth. Experiments, statistics, written and logical thought is believed to explain it all. This Free Comic Book Day on May 4 culminates some big weeks in geek-dom

M

ay 4 has long, long been, even in countries far, far away, celebrated in geek culture. “May the fourth be with youâ€? has been an inside joke for years. It only seems ďŹ tting that Titan Gaming & Collectibles’ Free Comic Book Day concludes an historic few weeks in geek culture. The current run began with the return of Game of Thrones on April 14, as viewers consumed the returning HBO show after a oneyear hiatus. With an estimated 17.4 million viewers, the show was the also the most streamed event ever for the network, according to a release. But the journey to these record-breaking numbers, and the anticipation of a conclusion to the story in the ďŹ nal season, for many individuals started more than two decades ago. It was 1996 when the ďŹ rst edition was released of George R.R. Martin’s novel, Game of Thrones. The novel was a hit, winning the 1997 Locus Award, presented by the science ďŹ ction and fantasy magazine of the same name, and was nominated for the

1997 Nebula Award, presented to the best works of science ďŹ ction and fantasy in the United States. For those readers and their journey with the characters, anticipation for the ďŹ nal episodes has been off the charts. As well, another decade-long geek franchise concludes in spectacular fashion, as Avengers: Endgame premiered on movie screens across North America on Thursday, April 25. The conclusion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series, which began with Robert Downey Jr. in 2008’s Ironman, will set new records at the box ofďŹ ce. As of writing, within six hours, ticket presales for screenings had surpassed one-day presales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. According to an Atom Tickets report, the ďŹ lm has outsold the four next highest record holders combined. The demand has left theatre operators adding screenings at non-traditional time slots such as 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. Those sell out as well. It seems ďŹ tting that a franchise that has built its story from

the most anticipated comic book limited series has also become the most anticipated movie of all-time. The storyline draws from The InďŹ nity Gauntlet, a sixlimited series released by Marvel Comics in 1991. At the time, it charted new opportunities for the comic book market. It expanded from the standard 24 pages to 48 pages. It published monthly. It also charged $2.50 per issue when the norm was $1.00 an issue. Nostalgia has set in and Marvel recently reprinted a graphic novel edition. It became the highest selling graphic novel of 2018. So, with the weeks of geek concluding, May the fourth be with you on Free Comic Book Day, which celebrates all things geek.

Richard’s Tire Tips

Do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel.

Submitted by Matt Cook

There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

The Yukon Status of Women Council is hosting a soccer-themed viewing of Bend It Like Beckham to highlight intersectionalist feminism PHOTO: Pixabay it with a critical eye. Hollywood’s depictions of gender, sexuality, race, class and other identities will be collectively applauded and criticized—all in good fun of course. The “interactive” portion of the viewing will follow a set of rules, though attendees are encouraged to get into the spirit and go off script. Without spoiling too much of

the movie’s plot, Bend it Like Beckham is a useful tool for exploring intersectional feminism as it follows a pair of young women—one Caucasian and one Indian—and their relationship with soccer amidst the expectations imposed on them by their families and society at large. You see, the world is not made equal for women. In fact, many of the systems of power that we are born into, such as political frameworks, religious norms, and educational institutions, operate in a way that actively privileges some people while actively marginalizing others. (e.g. women.) The thing is, not all women experience the same level of marginalization. These systems of power affect

Yukon Status of Women Council: Since its inception in 1973, the Yukon Status of Women Council has been at the forefront of gender equality research and initiatives in the Yukon. Back in the day, YSWC spearheaded the formation of the Mini-Bus Society, which became Whitehorse’s public transit system. Currently, YSWC is coordinating the Yukon Advocate Case Review, a project aimed at making it safer for Yukon women to report sexualized violence. Our other current project is inquiring into the pervasiveness of Yukon women and girls having to trade sex for basic needs such as shelter.

ntersectional feminism”— what is it and what does it mean? The Yukon Status of Women Council (YSWC) is helping Yukoners learn more with an interactive (feminist) film screening of Bend it like Beckham. The event, which will act as a fundraiser, will take place at the Beringia Centre on May 9 at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to individuals who want to learn more about intersectional

an Indigenous or Indian woman a lot differently (usually a lot more oppressively) than a Caucasian woman, for example. So, when the YSWC says it uses an “intersectional feminist framework” to inform its research, the organization is recognizing that “discrimination doesn’t exist in a bubble—different kinds of prejudice can be amplified in different ways when put together,” according to the International Women’s Development Agency. However, the interactive movie fundraiser night won’t get too heady or intellectual. In fact, the YSWC is preparing to entertain attendees with a cash bar of original soccerthemed cocktails and mocktails, Winterlong beer, delicious pizza from Panago, Klondike Kettle Corn popcorn for purchase, and a swath of fabulous silent auction items including creations from Wild Yukon Furs and an Alkan Air flight simulator certificate. It will be a fun chance to let off some steam and revisit this classic film that, at its heart, is a story of friendship and determination. Discounted advance tickets for this 19+ event can be
