They say the fastest land mammal of all is the cheetah, capable of running as fast as 120 km/h without breaking a sweat. But “they” are wrong. “They” have obviously never applied a stopwatch to a squirrel the moment it is released from a live capture trap. As a gardener and freshly minted rodent hunter extraordinaire, I know this from personal experience. Recently, en route to my weekend gig as a mini-train engineer in the local mall, I spotted a fellow bus rider with a two-pack of varmint traps. One was for raccoons and such, the other for lesser critters. She needed them for feral

cats in her neighbourhood, she explained. I needed one for the dang-blasted squirrels in my garden, I replied. Turns out the local farm supply place had a spectacular sale on catch-and-release gizmos. For $30, how could I go wrong? I soon realized it was my best impulse purchase ever. Within 36 hours, I had trapped no fewer than four of the nasty grey/black marauders who’ve been laying waste to my groceries for the past two years, and had gleefully transported them to a new home on the city’s southern extremities. Those who know me well, or who have read my less-than-be-

Live and let die, say I. I do not wish my fellow mammals any ill; I merely wish some of them gone. (At least during growing season.) Accordingly, it gives me great pleasure to chauffeur these furry bandits to a suburban paradise where they no longer need contend with city traffic or the rude epithets of cranky gardeners unwilling to share their bounty. cont’d on page 3 ...

I’ve even learned some of their language. “Whoa, what just happened? Last I knew, I was munching on free peanuts and some geezer’s sweet corn stalks. Now I’m in the ’burbs.” “I get you, bro. I loved digging up those unsprouted green beans and rooting around the marigolds, but I definitely wasn’t into his garlic or multiplier onions.” And I’m already attuned to what the next wave of potential invaders is thinking.

And more treats than Halloween around that wire thingamajig.” Meanwhile, I sit patiently at my office window, watching yet another squirrel circle the peanut trail to captivity. id’s days off consist of visiting with other locals at coffee time, doing several dump runs in a day and shuffling his classic cars around his yard. Today, Sid gathers a few items from around his house to give the appearance that he needs to go to the Beaver Creek dump, located north of the Canadian customs building. Because the customs building is so close to Beaver Creek, it is a bit of a hassle for locals to go to the dump, or to their camps and lands. But nonetheless, we jump in Sid’s old jeep and make the short trek. As soon as we approach the dumpsite, crows flee the scene in great quantities. We can always find something there, whether it’s in the free store or buried deep beneath the heap of metal scraps. Who knew visiting the local dump with Sid would grow into an afternoon adventure? There’s danger at every turn, especially if you’re like us and enjoy climbing over and under the massive piles of crushed vehicles. The Yukon is

duenorthmaternityandbaby.com Copywritten map from 1897 of the Klondike gold fields and into Alaska known for its harsh climate, unruly wilderness and adventurous early settlers seeking gold. After a busy afternoon at the dump we return to Sid’s where he wants to show me something. It’s a map. Like much of Sid’s collection, this map is of the Klondike gold fields. “Several companies made these kinds of maps to give away to people heading to Alaska for the Gold Rush – into the gold fields,” Sid tells me. “This map was made before Yukon existed! It was British possession and Yukon wouldn’t exist for another year.” The copyright for the map is dated 1897, but Yukon wouldn’t join Confederation until 1898. “It’s a fold-up map so it’s easy to put in

your pocket,” Sid says while he demonstrates how to fold it properly. While I’m snapping pictures of the map, I ask Sid what the advertisements were. “Advertisements on things like maps was normal. Johnson made a vinegar, furniture wax, car wax. I have a few car wax cans by Johnson in the museum.” There’s something else unusual about this map. It has a name written in fine pencil in its margin. “I never knew what that meant or who that was,” Sid says about the name. A quick Google search confirmed that the name Cherry Malotte refers to a fictional character in a 1942 film,

The Spoilers, starring Marlene Dietrich as Cherry Malotte. Set in Nome, Alaska, during the Gold Rush, the name written on Sid’s map is unusually relevant to the map itself. “I’m happy you were able to find what it meant! It adds to the history of this map!” Whether it’s scavenging automotive parts from the local dump, or discovering history through an old map, Sid is always looking for adventure to share. Sid van der Meer has collected treasures all his life and this passion has given Beaver Creek’s its very own museum. Here Sid recounts stories to his granddaughter, Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé.

Richard’s Tire Tips

Do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel. There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

Weather Talk with Mike Gladish

A perfect storm - we can’t ignore the human factors that lead to extreme weather events

I

attended David Phillips’ (Senior Climatologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada) March lecture on weather and climate change. This inspired me to write a series of articles with the goal of elaborating on many points that he made in his ‘factoid’-filled presentation. As Phillips said, we aren’t likely to succeed at reducing our use of fossil fuels in the foreseeable future because we like our cars and planes. He said we need to get more serious about managing other factors so that we adapt to climate change. In other words, we need to build resilient communities while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. While his focus was on the changing climate and the extent of human-caused climate change, Phillips touched on a variety of human factors related to the destruction caused by severe weather. Severe weather in most of Canada can include any of the following: heatwaves, cold waves, heavy snow or rain, hail, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. The results of severe weather include wildfires, floods and struc-

tural damage. There are several factors, other than a warming climate, that affect the outcome of severe weather events.

Municipal planning A lack of planning, or poor planning decisions, can worsen the effects of severe weather. Municipal decision-makers know which type of severe weather to expect and should prepare accordingly. For example, we know that Whitehorse can be extremely cold, which makes it necessary to bury water lines four metres underground. Even though it is very expensive to bury water lines to that depth, planners and city engineers are expected to prepare for the most severe situation. Building codes may seem cumbersome, but they are a result of anticipating potential weatherrelated problems. In many cases, lessons have been learned the hard way. The building code anticipates the heaviest snow load, the strongest wind gust, the highest water line and the possibility of lightning and extreme temperatures. It would be irresponsible to build without considering these

extreme possibilities. Our knowledge and awareness of the catastrophic results of wildland fires now makes it necessary to consider changes to our building code that will require fireresistant building materials and landscaping techniques. Making and following a building code is a human factor that we can control. A quote from Scott Stephens, University of California, says it all— “We should design neighbourhoods with emergency access and escape routes, (and) revise building codes based on Firesmart principles for construction materials and landscaping to create defensible space around homes. Combine that with forest professionals developing plans to mitigate hazardous fuels in the adjacent wildlands”

Environmental interference This human factor includes fire suppression, draining of marshland, clearcutting and other disruptions to natural cycles. In the last 50 years or more, 90 per cent of fires in B.C. have been suppressed. The same can be said for the Southern Lakes region, and around most Yukon settlements.

The boreal forest of the southern Yukon has burned repeatedly over thousands of years. In the last 100 years, fire suppression has interrupted the natural cycle. Now the accumulation of dead trees and mature trees as available fuel will increase the intensity of any large forest fire. Regardless of climate change, we know that the Whitehorse/ Southern Lakes area is dry and subject to extremely hot spells between May and August. (Hot summers will be the topic of another article.) Fuel load in the forest is something that we can control. We can use prescribed burning and we can use industrial methods to convert the forest resources into heating fuel. Using our local biomass for heating fuel will reduce our use of fossil fuels and provide local employment. That would be a win-win for human factors.

Media

coverage and the globalization of information A significant human factor that affects our perception of weatherrelated disasters is media coverage that tends to be sensational and does not analyze the histor-

Wildfires are a historic consequence of extreme weather in the Yukon and several human factors affect them ical context. Whitehorse has a long history of occasional hot, dry summers, major forest fires and a few evacuation alerts. Will the media refer back to these extreme weather events, or will they use the go-to stories about climate change? Focusing on the impact of climate change misses the point that the 1958 fire season could be repeated in 2019. (In 1958, multiple major fires broke out in southern Yukon, requiring a state of emergency to be declared in Whitehorse and residents to prepare to evacuate.) It would be a more severe situation because of the fuel load, increased population and infrastructure value. We have done very little since 1958 to make our community more resilient and more prepared for another major fire season. We see graphic details of disasters as they happen all over the world. This creates a perception that severe weather events are happening more now than in the past. We hear first-hand reports from victims stating that cont’d on page 7 ...

A perfect storm ... cont’d it’s the worst flood or worst hurricane that they’ve ever seen. The media rarely provides context for previous events and comparative damage. That would require a detailed analysis of population growth, urban development, geographic setting and other human factors that may have intensified the catastrophic results of the severe weather event. Metaphors used in weather reporting tend to create fear and unrealistic perceptions of disasters. Winter storms that we formerly called a “Colorado Low” are now called weather bombs. They are otherwise known as low pressure systems or disturbances in the atmosphere. They can vary in intensity and generate significant snow events from the western USA to eastern Canada. They also generate significant headlines for big city media. Terms such as “Snowmageddon” are used to describe a record-breaking snowfall. “Firenado” is used to describe strong winds generated by a forest fire. These dramatic terms create a catchy headline and imply that the phenomena are new and caused by climate change. There are other factors at play and they should be part of the story.

Economic Impact The economic impact of severe weather events is a human factor that can make extreme weather events seem like the worst ever. The Wood Buffalo area of Alberta

7

whatsupyukon.com

is in the boreal forest region. No doubt it burned many times since the last ice age, with no financial impact. The growth of Fort McMurray over the last 40 years had a huge impact on the economic losses caused by the 2016 fire. Sonoma, California, was burned by a wildfire in 2017. There were 6,800 homes destroyed. There was a 24-fold increase in houses since the 1960s when a previous fire destroyed homes in the area. Kelowna, B.C. is in a similar situation. That city is also prone to hot, dry weather and has a growing urban area. Urban sprawl is creeping up mountain sides that are more susceptible to fire damage. The homes are larger and more valuable, so there will be a significant increase in the economic damage when the next major fire occurs. The Manitoba government invested $40 billion in the 1960s to make Winnipeg more resilient to the natural flooding of the Red River. Well over $100 billion in potential destruction has been avoided.

Migration

patterns and population growth Human migration from areas affected by climate change, political unrest and economic imbalance will add to population growth in many countries. Will this population be accommodated in areas prone to extreme weather events? Will we blame the increased death and destruction on climate change or other human

Fire suppression in B.C. and the Yukon over the past 50 years has created increased fuel load in the wilderness

factors? It will be hard to say, but it won’t matter. Regardless of the cause, it will make sense to plan cities that are more resilient to the results of severe weather. It will also make sense to prepare citizens through education about the historical context of past weather events rather than fear of future events. When building on a flood plain, planners, builders and buyers should consider the

history of severe weather and the probabilities of future events. The Southern Lakes area is a good example of human migration and population growth. It is likely that Indigenous people adapted to fire in their environment by moving around. They could avoid fires and then return to take advantage of new growth and wildlife habitat. Modern migration and urban growth has resulted

PHOTO: Pixabay in towns that are vulnerable to fires caused by extreme weather. We can’t control the weather but we can adapt to it so that we mitigate the hazards that result from the ‘perfect storm.’ Mike Gladish is a keen weather observer who trained as a Meteorological Technician 35 years ago.

Getting to know bears

I

f I had to say which member of the bear family I mistrust the most, with little hesitation, I would say the black bear. This is backed up by an experience I had as a conservation officer at the Ottawa Sportsman show. The department had a twoyear-old black bear that had been in captivity all its life. It was used at sportsman shows for public viewing as well as education. Some called it a tame bear, but I can assure you that’s the wrong attitude to take when dealing with any bear, whether wild or caged. At the Ottawa Sportsman Show, those on duty were responsible for feeding and making water available to the caged bear every morning and night. To do so, you entered the cage. I did it many times with this particular bear, but one morning, the person who had been on duty in the evening forgot to feed and water the bear. When I went into the cage with the day’s meal and turned my back to the animal to put its food on a shelf, the bear stood on its back legs and took ahold of the padded shoulder of my dress uniform. Fortunately, it only scratched the skin of my shoulder. One important thing to remember about bears is the misuse of the word” hibernation” in winter. The bear is not actually in hibernation, but rather a deep sleep, similar to when a human goes into

a very deep sleep. I know of a person who actually crawled into a cave to get a picture of a bear one January. The bear was disturbed by the noise of the person and woke up. That guy was lucky to escape with his life. There is a big difference between hibernation and just the deep sleep the bear endures in the cold months. During the “deep sleep,” the bear’s temperature stays about normal compared to that of the groundhog, which truly hibernates, with a body temperature that drops to around 43 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Any movement near a bear in its deep sleep could wake the bear, while it would take hours to bring a groundhog out of hibernation. The female bear is less likely to be in as deep a sleep as the male. After the age of three, she will give birth to her first cub during this sleep period. It is most amazing to see a creature of 300 to 400 pounds give birth to a cub that is little more than the size of a wiener dog, but this is a very dangerous time to come face-toface with a female bear, regardless of what type of bear it is, as she will attack anything she feels is a danger to her cub. That includes a male bear a couple hundred pounds heavier than herself. One other thing to remember is that a bear is a very carnivorous

PHOTO: Murray Martin / WUY File Photo creature and will even kill as well as eat its own species (not cubs). I have sat at a distance to watch a female bear train her cub to hunt mice and climb trees, as well as catch fish and swim. I have heard people say that if they saw a bear they would turn and run, or climb a tree, or jump into a river and swim. Sorry folks, the bear could outdo you in a short time on any of these escape attempts. As to food, the black bear will eat just about anything that walks, crawls, flies or swims. It will also

eat just about any weed or plant that grows. This is why bears enter city limits for free handouts from humans. These handouts occur in the form of bird feeders, gardens and especially smelly garbage bins. The City of Whitehorse recently mailed out pamphlets to all homes, strongly advising residents to put their garbage behind fences or in closed shelters, moving them to the roadside only on the morning of pick up. Still, even the smell of an empty garbage bin will attract a bear.

Murray captured this photo of a grizzly bear standing on the side of the Haines Road A fitting closure to this week’s column: “Most troubles do not enter without an invitation.” Think about that one the next time you put something in that garbage bin. Murray Martin is a former Ontario conservation officer and a longstanding member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.

The Chilkoot Trail allows for exploration of more than the wilderness California-based artist Hannah Perrine Mode will explore various ideas during the Chilkoot Trail artist residency July 3 to 16

Part 1 of 3

by Amber Church

H

annah Perrine Mode’s art practice exists at the confluence of visual art, community storytelling and climate science. She will be bringing this unique perspective to the Chilkoot Trail artist residency from July 3 to July 16. The Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency is a creative journey through Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in Alaska and Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site in British Columbia. Each artist hikes the trail over a two-week period, allowing enough time to work and savour the experience. The artists offer workshops at campgrounds and interact with hikers in creative ways. This is followed by post-hike artist talks in Skagway and Whitehorse. Mode will be one of three artists taking part in the residency program this year. “I jump at any chance to combine my love of wilderness, backpacking and artmaking, and this seemed like a perfect fit,” said Mode. “I have such a love of the area after spending the past two summers working with the Juneau Icefield Research Program and doing other residencies in Southeast Alaska and was excited to build on those experiences and explore a new route while making art.” “I spend a lot of time making work outside in nature, whether day-hiking in the Bay Area, traversing across glaciers in Alaska, or leading art workshops in Patagonia. I work across mediums to make things that explore geologic empathy and help people form

PHOTOS: courtesy of Hannah Perrine Mode

Hannah Perrine Mode’s pieces “Scattered Light, Low Clouds” and “Now We Can Hold Time,” are tied closely to the landscapes where they were created: the northern California coast, Joshua Tree, Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness, Walden Pond, Oakland, Antarctica and the Mendenhall Glacier, respectively connections to the environment, climate change and deep time,” she added. “I’m hoping to continue to find more opportunities to work in polar science, exploring visual art as a tool for interdisciplinary learning and science communication. Especially at a time when climate change is such an urgent and important issue, I’m excited by the role that art can create

platforms for engagement and empathy–to connect with concepts of climate science, glaciology, and geologic time in a new way. “Depending on the project, you might find me making small drawings out on a trail, cyanotype prints of feminist constellation shapes, an installation of melting ice sculptures, or digging up clay to use for sculptures. I also often organize storytelling events and

participatory projects, either out in the field with groups of scientists or students, or as part of a larger art exhibition project.” Conducting an artist residence as a backpacking trip creates an extra set of challenges. “I’m packing pretty light since we are carrying everything in our backpacks,” said Mode. “When I’m out in the field I like having a ‘toolkit’ of supplies (watercolors, pens,

pencils, camera, etc.), but leaving a lot of the plan more open. I find that this leaves space for me to respond to my environment and go with the flow. To better absorb and understand my present experience and make art that feels more heartfelt than if I had a super structured plan laid out ahead of time. I also think of my time as an opportunity to research and garner firsthand experience that then goes into larger installation or painting projects later.” This isn’t to say that Mode doesn’t have a plan for her time on the trail. “I’m looking forward to doing a lot of watercolor painting, photographing, sketching, reading and writing. I will also be working on a collaborative project with my friend Kristin Link, a Chilkoot artist-inresidence from last year. My hiking partner, Danny Lulu, is also an artist and musician. He is bringing a couple small instruments and a recording device, so we have also been scheming about a sound and visual project to work on together while we are camping! I’m also really looking forward to talking with other hikers and leading a drawing workshop or two.” Mode is really looking forward to sharing her work with the community both on and off the trail. She said that, on the trail, her fellow hikers can look forward to some small drawing workshops and possibly a storytelling night or two. She currently has three artists talks scheduled during her residency. On Monday, July 8, she will give a 7 p.m. talk at Sheep Camp on the trail. On Saturday, July 13, she will speak at 7 p.m. at Lindeman City, also on the trail. On Wednesday, July 17, she will talk at 5:30 p.m. at the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site in Whitehorse. Even if you aren’t hiking the Chilkoot Trail during the time of Mode’s residency, you can still experience her journey by following along on instagram at instagram. com/hannahpmode. Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

NO GARDEN LIKE A DAWSON CIT Y GARDEN! Dawn’s friend Rose Gassner had her first garden in Dawson City last summer. It was an amazing abundance of food. She grew everything outside including tomatoes. In August the tomatoes were covered with plastic, harvested before the hard frost and stored. She ate tomatoes as they ripened well into the winter. Dawn sent us this photo of Rose working in her garden in August. Dawn says “She couldn’t believe the size and abundance of the vegetables.” Dawn and Rose are hoping (and all Dawson gardeners are hoping ) for another abundant garden season this summer.

RV History series

Forgotten Town

Dyea: The town Alaska forgot by Doug Sack

T

wo prominent American tourism publications hit the streets recently. Neither included much of a mention of Dyea, except to list the Dyea Campground in Skagway and note that it is the start of the Chilkoot Trail to the Klondike. Considering your roving RV reporter proclaimed from the top of the Golden Stairs last summer that my favourite RV campsite in all 586,412 of the square miles of Alaska was the free campground on the magnificent tidal flats of Dyea, this struck me as a mad irony at best, or a glaring editorial omission at worst. It was like forgetting to invite Grandpa to the family reunion. Dyea is where it all began (at least, in the Klondike version of the northern histories in Yukon and Alaska) and it’s as close as it gets to sacred ground in all of the North.

Every spring, I dig my RV travel trailer out of a snowbank and head towards Dyea to launch the new camping season. This year, it was on April 2 after failing to get over the mountains on the last day of winter, March 19, because the road was closed by avalanches. Thus, this season opened at Log Cabin, which is in B.C., on a closed road with zero traffic, in between alpenglows on both ends of darkness with only a pair of hungry ravens for company. The first place I always stop in Dyea is the slide cemetery, where I pay my respects to the first casualties of the Gold Rush, almost all of whom were young men from Washington, Oregon and California. They were the earliest arrivals among the stampeders who were trying to beat the crowds to the Klondike and perished in the April 3, 1898 avalanche at Sheep Camp on the Chilkoot which killed over 70 stampeders. Until that fateful day, it was assumed Dyea would be developed into a year-round port with its own railroad climbing up to the Yukon lake country, the headwaters of the Yukon River. The Chilkoot Pass suddenly developed a dangerous reputation and the big railroad financiers began considering nearby Skagua (original Indigenous name), which was a natural deep water

to the next big gold strike in Nome. The beginning of the end of Dyea came with that snowslide which tilted the terminus battle in Skagway’s favour. At the time, Dyea had “reached its zenith in about May 1898, at which time the town had a population estimated at 5,000 to 8,000 people, served by 48 hotels, 47 restaurants, 39 saloons and 19 freighting companies,” according to Murray Lundberg in his site, ExploreNorth.

There is no doubt the vast majority of stampeders, estimated to be 30,000, in 1897/98 used the Chilkoot rather than White Pass to reach the Klondike goldfields, but it’s been all Skagway ever since. The post office closed in June 1902. By 1903, less than half a dozen people occupied the remains of the old Dyea townsite. Between then and now, Dyea spent most of the 20th century doing little more than slowly rising,

“This struck me as a mad irony much like forgetting to invite Grandpa to the family reunion.” port with a longer but more gradual climb over the mountains via White Pass. Dyea, which had never been formally incorporated as a town, had a chamber of commerce and was declared a federal port in 1897, a designation it lost in 1900 when its customs officials were sent

“Although aerial tramways had been built across the worst part of the Chilkoot Pass and a railway was on the drawing board, the first WP&YR (construction) train to leave Skagway on July 20, 1898, signalled that the race between the two towns was almost over.”

DAILY DAY TRIPS

literally, as the Taiya River valley gains roughly four centimetres of elevation every year due to tectonic activity deep down. Kathy and Fred Hosford, proprietors of the beautiful Chilkoot Trail Outpost (cabins, B&B and restaurant) provide the only housing in the valley, and maybe the best breakfast in the world. Kathy is a well-known local Republican and was one of 28 Alaskans who nominated the current president at the 2016 convention in Cleveland, Ohio. She is an unabashed Trumpster and even has a pickup used by her yard crew which has “Palin” on the Alaska vanity plates. She says she supported him because his grandfather, Fred Trump, came through Dyea on the way to making his fortune ($582,000 USD) at Bennett and Whitehorse in 1897. Her husband, Fred, is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Army at Chu Lai in the late 60s. She and I enjoyed several wonderful breakfasts, talking American politics. The grub was grand and she has a great sense of absurd humour to go with her winning smile and hot cooking. The other oddity about Dyea

PHOTO: jkbrooks85 on Foter.com in 2019 is the presence of a highaltitude zipline on the other side of the valley across the tidal flats. The irony of a high-speed modern zipline in a ghost town famous for its proximity to the steep climb up the Golden Stairs of Chilkoot Pass is too difficult to digest and discuss … so I won’t. There is a ragged forest service campground just across the road from Kathy and Fred’s place, but not many have time to escape the cruise ship madness of nearby Skagway, where each arriving vessel is said to be carrying $1 million per day in retail and service revenue for Skagway, some of which finds its way to our beloved Dyea. The number of 15-seat minibuses scurrying back and forth every day with tourists is appalling, but they never bother the serious RVers camping on the secluded tidal flats. Those campers know that the true purpose of visiting Dyea in 2019 is to listen to the tide coming and going and what the myriad of waterfowl are saying about it. How any rational publications can discuss northern historical tourism without a full mention of Dyea is beyond my aging comprehension, much like asking “Where the hell is Grandpa?!” when lining everybody up for the family reunion photo. “OOPS!”

Doug Sack, 71, is the former sports editor of the Yukon News and the Whistler Question and longtime columnist for Ski Canada magazine. Before that, he was young.
