While still stocking local grocery stores (Wyke’s Your Independent Grocer and Save-On-Foods), the bagel dream team also stocks many local restaurants and cafes. The Bullet Hole storefront offers bagels individually, or by the dozen and half-dozen. You can take them home, or have tasty sandwiches toasted and built on a variety of bagels including sesame seed, poppy seed, everything, plain, rosemary sea salt and cinnamon raisin. (the latter is only available after 2 p.m.) The team also makes an inhouse herb and garlic cream cheese (an unsung hero, it’s lovely and packed with dill) and offers four different sandwiches as part of the core menu, in addition to a changing weekly special that

Past offerings have included the Lady Marmalade, with housemade marmalade, baked prosciutto crisps, and Ile-aux-Gru aged cheddar (supplied by Bullet Hole’s neighbor, Cultured Fine Cheese) and the Rick Reuben, made with locally smoked meat from Stacey’s Butcher Block, Emmental Swiss cheese from Cultured, housemade sauerkraut and Dijon aioli. Four days full of food and family fun

Eating, cooking and learning about homegrown products by Elke Reinauer

T

he Yukon Culinary Festival will show that the territory has a lot to offer when it comes to food. The line-up of events includes everything food lovers could dream off, from cooking over an open fire, to a family lunch at Horse Haven Ranch. The Festival will kick off on Aug. 1 at the newly renovated MacBride Museum. There will be food from Yukon-based chefs, including Dona Novekosky of Klondike Rib and Salmon and Katie Thom of Lulu’s Lunch Truck. Guests will enjoy live music from The Shaggy Manes and there will be a photo booth with fun Yukon costumes. If you’re keen on learning how to cook like a chef, come to the cooking demos at Fireweed Market, also happening on Thursday. Local chef and author Miche Genest will demonstrate how to cook with Yukon products.

On Aug. 2, visitors can travel back in time on board the S.S. Klondike. Chef Carson Schiffkorn will create canapes that will transport guests back to the 1950s when the S.S. Klondike was a cruise ship. The festival, established by the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon, has been operating since 2013. Eric Pateman, founder and president of Edible Canada, has been involved with the festival for many years. He’s excited to help showcase Yukon cuisine. “For years we have worked to produce events in the Yukon that generate a strong sense of Northern food culture and put the spotlight on local ingredients. We are excited and look forward to celebrating local,” he said. One of the highlights will be the family lunch on Aug. 3 at Horse Haven Ranch. Guests will learn about local meat while enjoying lunch. Menu selection includes a tasting of Horse Haven Beef (three breeds), side of beef smoked and roasted in hay, fire-roasted whole farmed wild-type boar, Icy Waters Arctic char tempura and plantbased dishes. One of the organizers, Meighan

The Yukon Culinary Festival hosted a farm lunch event at the Circle D Ranch as part of the 2018 event Makarchuck, said there will also be open fire cooking. Horse Haven’s website says the company supplies grass-fed-meat. For the feeding, the farm gets its hay from B.C. and Alberta. There will also be music, activities for the kids (sack races, tomato slingshot, egg on a spoon race), farm tours, a cash bar, kidfriendly non-alcoholic beverage choices and much more. Kids 10 and under are free. Another highlight will be the Feasting and Foraging event at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on Aug. 3, said Makarchuck. There will be open fire cooking and cooking from guest chef Chris Whittaker of Quaaout Lodge in B.C. The lodge is located on First Na-

tion Secwepemc Territory. Whittaker is well-known as a humble champion of local cuisine. There also will be a huge buffet of locally farmed, fished and foraged foods. The festival takes place from Aug. 1 to 4. More information can be found about the events at YukonCulinary.ca

Yukon Gardens continues to grow How’sBUSINESS How’sBUSINESS How’sBUSINESS

Facility expansion has made winter growing possible by Barry Waitt

G

rowing up in a small town in Saskatchewan, and during his high school days, no one knew Lorne Metropolit’s name. But they did know that he was Mac Metropolit’s son and he did good landscaping work. So, he was known as “Mac’s son” and if anyone needed a tree planted, a hole dug or a lawn planted, they would call Mac’s son. Metropolit got the horticulture bug from his grandmother. He started working with soil and plants as ‘Mac’s son’ and the love of growing has been in his blood ever since. That love has resulted in a 34-year career in the Yukon as the owner and operator of Yukon Gardens. Metropolit doesn’t have a horticultural degree, but has taken every course he could since opening the Gardens, studied on his own and has brought up consultants to fine tune their growing abilities at Yukon Gardens. Sitting in his tiny office in the new vegetable production facility, Metropolit recounts the early days of Yukon Gardens. “I created Yukon Gardens in 1985. The area was solid bush and there was no road access or car wash or veterinary clinic. The first access off what was then South Access Road was created by our business to access the gardens. We started out as a botanical show garden, but the Hamilton Boulevard extension cut through it and those days were over. We lived in a small trailer on the property for

12 years before we moved into what is now the veterinary clinic. We lived there for 18 years before selling it.” The long hours are the biggest challenge for this type of business according to Metropolit. “You have to be willing to work seven days a week. Horticultural plants need to be taken care of daily, just like feeding chickens or cattle. Not many people are willing to do that. I could be working here 10 to 12 hours a day. We are always on the lookout for insects and disease. As an example of the precautions we take, staff who work in the greenhouse twenty feet away [from the new vegetable production facility] are not allowed in this facility and the staff who work in the vegetable production facility are not allowed in that greenhouse; all because of concern about bugs and disease.” The question about whether he gets four or five months off in the winter is greeted with an emphatic - no! Metropolit notes that the new vegetable production greenhouse facility operates for most of the year, and there is plenty of paperwork to do in the winter, such as the ordering of flowers and vegetable seeds because so many new varieties come out every year. For example, there are probably 70 different varieties of white petunias and they have to be checked out to see which ones are best for our climate.

Metropolit noted that when he takes a holiday in January, he always takes his computers with him so he can do research on seed varieties, prepare quotes for the City flower order, and prepare quotes for landscaping requests that are coming in. But how is Yukon Gardens continuing to grow? The new vegetable production facility is,  according to Metropolit, high tech, state-of-theart and one of the best equipped greenhouses in Canada. “The boiler system is the heart of the facility. It operates on burning wood chips from Haines Junction. The system is so well designed, there is almost zero pollution. If it wasn’t for the steam, you wouldn’t know it was here.” When asked about the challenges of running a nursery north of sixty, Metropolit noted the lower night time temperatures, the heating required and the higher heating costs. Heating costs are why they switched to the biomass heating for the new vegetable production facility. “The new vegetable production facility is expanding our business big time. For example, we can now provide the Whitehorse grocery stores with cucumbers continuously, where previously, there were gaps where we had none available. It’s all about farming. It’s a business. We need to make adjustments and usually measure production per square meter.” Responding to a question about what he is most proud of, Metropolit, highlighted the new biomass vegetable production facility,

Yukon Gardens burns wood chips from Haines Junction to run the vegetable production facility most of the year Fresh tomatoes grown in the new vegetable production facility  the fact that they’re one of the few garden centers in town that grows most of their own bedding plants and that they are having more weddings than ever in ‘The Wedding Gardens.’ According to Metropolit, there are a lot of people in town who got married here and their kids come by and want to get married here too. When Lorne Metropolit is ready to take it easy, Yukon Gardens will remain in the family. “My youngest daughter Kelsey got a Kinesiology degree, but she wasn’t happy with that direction, so she took the Olds College horticultural program and got a twoyear horticultural diploma. Someday, but not too soon, she will operate the business.

By Monica Garcia “the annoying little sister” because Kahlua is always following her siblings and other dogs around, wanting to be included in whatever they’re up to.

“She’s always getting left behind but she never gives up … She learns really quickly and I’ve taught her a bunch of tricks.”

Puppy Kahlua, a.k.a. Lua

At

16, Sienne Secord is one of the youngest, but also one of the most responsible dog owners I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing. “No, we don’t need a dog” had long been the response of her dad, Sean, to her constant requests for a puppy. Secord had been asking for four or five years, ever since her childhood dog, Pogo, died at age 20. When her mother and stepdad bred their dogs, Secord decided it was her chance. The father is a purebred German shepherd and the mom is a grand ol’ mix of rottweiler, pit bull, golden lab, beagle and German short-haired pointer.

Tricks? Already? Yep. Sienne hit the pavement running when it comes to puppy training. At just six months old, little Kahlua already knows “touch,” (she touches her nose to your hand) “middle,” (she runs between your legs from behind then looks up at you) ”sit,” and “lay down.” She’s also been crate trained and will start formal puppy classes this fall. “I wanted to put in all the work to have a really good dog. My aunt is a vet and she helps me with some of the training. When I brought her home, I ordered a puppy training book on Amazon. I also follow this

Sienne fell harder. The brown and black pup, with its ears that can’t decide if they want to be perky or floppy, was her dream come true. “I wanted a puppy for so long and I’m obsessed with her. She’s my favourite thing in the world.”

Her Dad really is smitten with Kahlua and offered to keep her during Sienne’s first year, when she’ll be living in residence. In year two, she plans to rent a dog-friendly house with friends. Further down the road she wants to adopt a rescue dog who would benefit from Lua’s solid training.

Sienne named her Kahlua, with Lua as a nickname. She also calls her

Getting bigger One thing that impressed me about Sienne is her aspirations. This girl is going places and she’s got a plan. One that includes Kahlua. She’ll be completing grade 12 this upcoming school year (she’s happy to have several spares in which she’ll be able to go home and play with Lua) and then she’s going to take psychology at UBC in Kelowna.

“I feel like I put in an order for a puppy from the mamma dog. I wanted the same markings as her, but the body of the dad, and I wanted her to have short hair ... and she delivered!” Sienne strategically took home her puppy, (the runt of nine) during March break so she could devote one hundred per cent of her time to the pooch. Coincidentally, her father was away, but she insisted that he fell in love with Kahlua as soon as he got home.

2018 Big Squeeze Lemonade Stand at Seasons

When life hands you lemons ...

… have a drink of lemonade on August 7 by Angela Krueger and the Yukon Transportation Museum

T

wo Yukon organizations are making lemonade centre stage this summer. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon is hosting the second annual Big Squeeze Lemonade Stand Competition and the Yukon Transportation Museum is sharing Klondike Gold Rush history with a lemony twist. The museum has taken to referring to the time before and after the completion of the White Pass & Yukon Route railway as “Before Lemons” and “After Lemons.” Prior to completion of the route, it could take months for lemons (which generally keep for less than a few weeks) to reach Dawson City. The railroad was

9

whatsupyukon.com

completed on July 29, 1900: this marked the first opportunity to deliver fresh lemons to the Yukon. The first fresh lemonade in Dawson City was advertised 117 years ago by McDonalds’ Saloon in 1902. Take a moment and compare that feat of transportation—including shipping by rail, trail and ship— with the simplicity of being able to pluck a lemon off the grocery store shelf today. Dawson City was a fancy city in the early 1900s and it had the latest in just about everything. Those with the means revelled in it all, sometimes blowing their money as quickly as they made it, including on fresh lemonade. Im-

agine yourself in Dawson City on a soporific afternoon 117 years ago, with mosquitoes buzzing, alders shimmering and that sweet, icy lemonade waiting for the next lucky strike miner. Join the Yukon Transportation Museum on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 3 p.m. on the Lemonade Tour, a look at the economic, social and medical context and supply chain of this early moment of “After Lemons.” You will be horrified at the details around the suffering involved with scurvy. But you’ll relax as you find out about the many indigenous Yukon plants that offer an abundance of vitamin C, including rosehips, spruce and pine needles, cloudberries, dandelions and chickweed. And afterwards, visitors will join in squeezing a few lemons and enjoying a delightfully icy tart lemonade. A partner of the Yukon Transportation Museum, BBBSY,is also having a lemon-themed event again this year with The Big Squeeze lemonade stand competition happening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 7. Local businesses and organizations who register a team make their own lemonade recipe and set up a stand outside (or inside) their workplace where they sell their lemonade to the public by donation to BBBSY. The 2018 Big Squeeze winner was Lumel Studios. Additional lemonade stands were located at BMO, Well-Read Books, Seasons, Paradise Alley, Challenge Disability Resource Group, BYTE, RE/ MAX Action Realty (last year’s top fundraisers) and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon office next to LePage Park. Save-On-Foods is helping out again this year by donating lemons for competitors to make their lemonades from scratch. With nine teams participating last year, Yukoners donated $4,000 to support youth mentoring programs. To set up a stand, let Big Brothers Big Sisters know by Aug. 5 by calling 668-7911 or emailing bbbsyukon@gmail.com, and get yourself registered.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Charred corn and asparagus tacos

F

armers’ markets, backyard barbeques, impromptu get-togethers, camping trips—these are what make a summer special. But they also fill your fridge with a mashup of ingredients without any sort of plan or direction. Tacos are a great option for making use of these popular summer ingredients. Adding pickled banana peppers adds acidity and spice, so if you don’t have a half-eaten jar leftover from some gathering, try adding a few splashes of an acidic hot sauce. Cholula or tabasco would both work. Makes 4 tacos

INGREDIENTS

❑ 2 Tbsp butter ❑ 16 asparagus stalks, sliced into 1-inch pieces

❑ 2 ears fresh corn, kernels removed

❑ 2 Tbsp pickled banana peppers, coarsely chopped

❑ 3 scallions, sliced Corn and asparagus

A tasting tour of Portugal by Lillian Nakamura Maguire

I

’m not a real connoisseur of fine dining, but I do enjoy trying out new tastes and exploring local foods, especially when I’m travelling. Portugal provided lots of opportunity for that when my friend and I went there in late March and early April. I had heard about the Ribiera Market in Lisbon and we explored it on our first morning. There was a scary-looking dead fish eyeing me in the fish market section. (We later learned it was a black swordfish, a tasty white fish.) We ventured into the large food court with an assortment of medium priced to high-end food choices. With the barrage of new sights and sounds, I was overwhelmed by all the choices. I had my mouth ready for some seafood and opted for seared scallops topped with a mango sauce. They were pricey at 10 Euros for three large scallops, but very tasty. That evening we headed to the neighbourhood grocer located near our guesthouse and picked up some local cheese and sampler bottles of port wine. We asked the shop owner if she could recommend a good restaurant with some local dishes. She engaged two young men, one of whom spoke English, and, after further discussion with them and another eavesdropping customer, we 1 settled on a nearby restaurant. One thing to remember is that appetizers of cheese, olives, patés and bread brought to the table before you order is not free. I had a simply prepared grilled tuna with side of potatoes, carrots and spinach, and glass of house wine. It was all very tasty and reasonable at 18 Euros. We loved heading to the local markets where there was an array of colours–growing plants, beautiful tropical fruits such as loquats, kiwi, papaya and mango, fish that we didn’t recognize, local cheeses, olives, dried herbs, and dried fruit and nuts. The dried fruits, nuts, olives and cheese made 6 a delicious snack or light lunch on our travels. In Tavira, on the southern coast of Portugal, my friend bought some insomniac tea to take home. The proprietor mixed it up from various baskets on display in her stall.

Food Favourites

Whenever we needed a break, we stopped for café au lait and pastel de nata (custard tart) available throughout Portugal. My

friend was the taste-tester and gave them a rating from 1 to 10. We never got below 7 and managed a few times to reach the gold standard. The best had a light touch to the pastry and a creamy custard filling. We saw people heading off to work with a shot of coffee and a tart. Another favourite that became a regular treat was freshly squeezed orange juice. In Portugal they have these wonderful juicer machines where whole oranges are thrown into the machine. We also bought fresh oranges that you had to eat over the kitchen sink, or with several napkins as they were dripping with the sweetesttasting juice. One of the best meals was at

From paté to port wine

naan bread. I had a Cobra beer. All of this cost only 25 Euros for the two of us. We opted for an early dinner and there were no other customers, so we had an interesting conversation with the Southeast Asian waiter and staff about their difficult life as immigrants in Portugal. At the end of the meal, we got to see the tandoori oven and meet the chef and other staff. It was a wonderful ending to our stay in Tavira, a place I’d highly recommend. We took a side trip to Evora, in central Portugal, east of Lisbon and enjoyed some traditional dishes for lunch with our tour guide. He explained that many of the dishes evolved from using the “leftovers” and less desirable cuts

Part 2 of 2

where we broke bread into the bottom of the bowl and poured the soup over it. It had a light, delicate flavour that our guide told us was made from dogfish, a type of small shark. Another traditional dish that our tour guide ordered had an unusual combination of pork and small neck clams, and is called carne de porco à Alentejana. It was served in a two-tier clay dish with another pork dish that I think was barbequed. We had hoped to taste grilled sardines, but unfortunately it was not the season for them. We did have a tasty sardine paté. Of course sardines were available in those beautifully decorated tins you find for sale in the tour-

stew with bits of sausage, white beans, potatoes and onions in the stew. I thought it was rather bland. On a cool, rainy evening I enjoyed a delicious kale soup with chorizo and a dollop of olive oil swirled on top. Of course, being in Portugal one has to taste the port wine. Most evenings we enjoyed our port wine samplers before bedtime. The port winery tour in Porto provided lots of information on the various styles of port and the tastings of three selections left us a bit light-headed. It was unfortunate I had no room in my suitcase to take a bottle home! The meal that I enjoyed the most was a steamed, seafood dish. Cataplana is named for the copper-plated, wok-shaped pan in which it was cooked. The dish contained crayfish, mussels, clams, prawns and squid for 13 Euros. My friend and I shared a tomato, mozzarella and arugula salad. We later discovered that the restaurant was known for its homemade pasta alla forma, but I was more interested in tasting as much fish and seafood as possible, so didn’t regret my choice.

I think that Canadians could learn a lot from the Portuguese about eating and cooking locally available foods. They make full use of their local ingredients while they’re in season. Fresh tomatoes, greens, and other produce were readily available and utilized in salads and soups. Creamy local cheeses made from goat, sheep and cow’s milk provided lots of choices. All the food was simply prepared, used local ingredients and gave true meaning to “slow food.” We enjoyed quiet conversation, without the blare of music in restaurants and cafes and we never felt rushed to leave. No cell phones interrupting the joy of eating and the company of friends. Great lessons that PHOTOS: Lillian some of our restaurants need Nakamura Maguire to take into consideration.

Interview with the raven Mythology #5

Doug Sack: Do you solemnly swear the testimony you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you Odin? Joe Ben Raven: Gurgle. (Yes.) Sack: State your full name for the record, please. JBR: Joseph Benjamin Raven. Sack: Age? JBR: 793 Moons, give or take. Sack: That’s roughly 61 years. JBR: Is it? Sack: Where were you hatched? JBR: In the high northern tundra, close to the Arctic Circle. My flock was following the Porcupine caribou herd when I cracked the eggshell and dazzled them with my charismatic presence. I was their first hatchling in five years and they were happy to see me. My brother and three sisters showed up right behind me. We had normal chicklet experiences while growing up, including being rude and rowdy gang members. Sack: So why did you pick me to be the one to speak with? JBR: I didn’t pick anything. I was just looking for something to eat that day on the Dempster when you suddenly started talking to me. I couldn’t have been more surprised. My father told me our flock had been looking for a “raven talker” for over 700 years, but you were the first to show up. It was big news in the raven world when you and I started talking. Sack: Why? JBR: To set the record straight! You crazy humans with your endless wars, gold rushes and haywire religious beliefs have painted us

was Genghis Khan. That man knew

by Joe Ben Raven via Doug Sack over the centuries as some kind of evil bird, harbingers of death, disease and doom, instruments of the macabre side of life. Sack: Poe didn’t help either. JBR: Poe schmoe. He wasn’t one per cent of it. We tried to make contact with him, by the way, in about 1845 when he made us famous, but he was too drunk and grieving his wife’s death. He was a mess at the end of his short life. Nevermore, my ass. Sack: Who do you blame for your sordid, grisly and disgusting reputation? JBR: It just comes with being an aggressive scavenger. Of course we were always seen on bloody battlefields after a war. That’s called “party time” to a raven. We love raw meat and you humans are the tastiest of all mammals, by far. Sack: Really? Which humans were the best eating in history? JBR: Our elders say Mongolians. Our favourite human ever was Genghis Khan, who massacred millions on the Asian Steppes, then left them for us and the wolves to clean up. That man knew how to put out a spread. Life has never been that good since. They like to say his grave was never found and it never will be because we attended his “sky burial” and ate him. Sack: How long will ravens live?

“Our favourite human E VER

how to put on a spread.”

JBR: As long as it takes to clean up the planet after you sloppy humans are dead and gone. Har har. Sack: Do ravens really mate for life? JBR: What does “mate” mean? Sack: Marry. One male, one female, fall in love, make little birdies, spend your lives together like

us how big ravens create little ravens? JBR: What happens in the nest stays in the nest. Sack: OK. What’s your favourite colour? JBR: That’s a tough one. I’ll go with black. Sack: What’s your favourite pastime other than eating human flesh? JBR: High altitude soarDoug gets up close ing on windy days. Just close your eyes and and personal with let the wind carry you a raven in this away. It’s the best high “interview” of them all. Sack: What are the others? JBR: Half frozen engine oil from bulldozers and trucks is quite a buzz and lasts for 10 hours. And any fermented berries in late summer and early autumn, what you humans call getting drunk. I’ve always PHOTO: Donar Reiskoffer via Wikimedia Commons been fond of fermentation. It’s like magic. Boring, tasteless little berries sudnorthern lovebirds? denly turn into rocket fuel! I love JBR: Who told you that? to climb high and dive drunk. Sack: Everybody. JBR: Marriage is a human invention Sack: Other than ravens, what are and humans haven’t been around your favourite birds? very long. We were here before JBR: That’s a personal call but I the dinosaurs. We pair up for sur- like eagles and owls, two fellow vival and hunting reasons, not pro- scavengers which are also birds of prey. Nothing else hunts at night creation. Sack: So where do all the little quite like an owl. They’re impressive, hunt all night and sleep all birdies come from? JBR: A giant black stork bigger day, just the opposite of us. I also than an ostrich delivers them to like all the cute little songbirds that show up in spring. I have a the good ravens on All Birds Day. Sack: You aren’t going to tell secret fantasy to be an Arctic tern

who migrates every year from here to Antarctica. Those suckers can lock their wings at high altitudes in the wind currents and sleep while they’re flying! Can’t even imagine doing that. I’d run into a tree for sure. Hummingbirds blow my mind too. Sack: There are 18,000 species of birds in the world. Do you have any idea how many of them are ravens? JBR: Nine. Sack: How many in North America? JBR: Two. We are called Corvus Corax, common raven, and the white-necked Chihuahuan ravens in southwest USA and Mexico. We call them snowbirds because of their weird white collar. Almost as silly-looking as magpies, who we call Oreos. Sack: Least favourite bird? JBR: That’s easy: Seagulls in general and Jonathon Livingston Seagull in particular. Sack: Why? JBR: The key word is “Kleptoparasitism” but don’t get me started! I’ll tell you next time. Gotta find something to eat now. First things first. Sack: Thank you for this. JBR: No, Grrrronku.

Doug Sack’s grandchildren, aged eight, 10 and 12, are now saying “Grrrronku” instead of “thank you” because it’s totally kiddiecool in the Yukon to talk like a raven. Are we having fun yet?

Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

Carey shares an odd tale of the avoiding the law in the North PHOTO: Pixabay

No blues for this bootlegger You win some, you win some by Carey Marshall

O

ne afternoon, in the mid70s in Inuvik, I was looking for some oddball thing for my vehicle. I looked almost everywhere and then I decided to go see John, a local who owned one of the taxi companies. I can’t remember if he helped me out or not, but I remember I stayed for awhile and shot the breeze with him. Somewhere along the way, he mentioned that his wife, Beth, and her sister were out shopping for clothes. I asked him what the occasion was. He said they needed the clothes to go to court. Then I remembered that a few months ago, their place had been raided and Beth had been charged with bootlegging. I asked him what he thought Beth’s chances were. When he told me his game plan,

I knew I’d show up to watch the proceedings. I love watching court cases. The courthouse in Inuvik at that time was just a room above the post office. The prosecutor and the judge would come in from Yellowknife. I arrived at the courthouse early and grabbed a front row seat. The prosecutor was already there getting organized. John and Beth arrived (Beth looked great in her new outfit) with an entourage of about 10. Among them was John’s best weapon, Ted. A fancy lawyer from Yellowknife, Ted’s reputation preceded him. People in the know called him a prosecution killer. I just happened to be one of those in the know because I was once selected to be jury foreman in a murder trial where Ted acted as

defense. I got to watch him for three days and, in the end, he won. Ted dripped so much charisma, you almost had to follow him around with a mop. I have never seen a Hollywood movie that could give a performance like him. After seeing the opening evidence from the prosecution, you could tell that the RCMP had put a lot of time and effort into getting this bust right. It was going to be an uphill battle for Beth. The RCMP had recruited an officer from its Fort Simpson detachment, which was 500 miles south of Inuvik. The officer grew a beard and came to Inuvik to work undercover. The Fort Simpson officer testified that he went to a taxi stand that was off the side of a house and purchased a bottle of Five Star whiskey from Beth. When the officer was cross-examined by Ted, he testified that since he was only in the taxi office, he could not tell if there was anyone else in the house. The lawyer also got him to admit that since he wasn’t in the whole house, there was a possibility that there was another person in the house who looked like Beth. The next person to testify was the officer who conducted the raid. He testified that they

had found Five Star whiskey in the house, shortly after the Fort Simpson officer had purchased a bottle off Beth. The prosecutor then had around six cases of Five Star whiskey hauled into court and recorded into evidence. In crossexamination, Ted got the officer to confirm that there were other people in the house and the officer had to admit that there was a possibility the whiskey belonged to somebody other than Beth. The prosecution had a few other minor witnesses, then turned the case over to the defence. Ted put Beth on the stand and she denied selling any whisky. In the cross-examination, the prosecutor didn’t make any headway with Beth. They accused and she denied. It was time for the last part of John’s plan as Ted called Beth’s sister Halley to testify. John didn’t leave anything to chance. He had Halley dressed identical to Beth and had also sent both of the sisters to the hairdresser to get identical haircuts. The defence got Halley to explain how she was related to the case. Then Ted asked Halley where she was on the night of the raid. Halley said she was at the taxi stand. Ted then asked her the big question, “Did Beth sell a bottle of Five Star whiskey to the undercover cop?” Halley answered, “No, she did not.” She was then asked, “Can you tell me who sold the bottle of whiskey to the officer?” Halley answered, “I did.” Ted got Halley’s version of the story clearly established, and then turned Halley over to the prosecution. The prosecutor probed and prodded, and even threatened Halley with perjury, but never made much headway. Short little Halley was solid as a rock. She knew what she said on the stand could not be used against her. Halley was the last witness and then it was time for closing arguments The prosecutor went over the evidence again and tried to drill home the point that dressing

the sisters alike was obvious and should be considered a stunt. He also listed a few reasons why Halley’s testimony was suspect, and gave the floor to the defence. Anybody that knows me will agree on one thing. I’m cheap. Still, there’s one thing I would pay for, which is watching Ted in final arguments. Wind up the energizer bunny and watch him go. With a ton of flair, the prosecution’s evidence got shredded. Ted pointed out that the officer’s memory during cross-examination was spotty on a lot of details. He sliced, he diced. When he finished with the evidence from the other side, it was chopped up so finely it could have been used for confetti. It didn’t take long for the judge to make his decision. Not guilty. I bet you think with a not guilty verdict that this story is over. Well, you’re wrong. The RCMP’s humiliation was going to go on a wee while longer. As soon as the judge rose to leave, John and four other fellas headed to the front of the courtroom, grabbed the cases of whisky and started to head out of the courtroom. The RCMP officer that was sitting with the Crown prosecutor spotted them and was livid. He told them that they couldn’t take evidence of the Crown. Luckily for the defence, the door where the judge leaves the courtroom was at least 30 feet away. With the judge only a few of steps from the door, Ted raised his voice so the judge could hear him, “Your Honour, they are trying to stop my clients from taking their property.” The judge never broke stride, he looked over his shoulder, said, “Give them their property” and, with one quick movement as fluid as a ballet dancer, he opened the door and left the room. Carey Marshall is from Whitehorse and has lived on both sides of the mountain north of 60 for almost 50 years.

Dawson “Groan Boy” Bealieu is preparing to drop his first album Aug. 10 — and it’s the first release from the Yukon’s own Big Boat Records

Dawson Bealieu wants fans to know they’re in for a real rock show when his band releases its first album

by by Manus Hopkins

D

awson Bealieu, known by his stage alias Groan Boy, is instantly recognizable in his blue blazer—the same one he’s wearing on the concert flyers plastered all over town. In recent months, he’s had a schedule that would exhaust the most zealous workaholics, but he still managed to bring an awful lot of enthusiasm for an 8:30 a.m. interview. There’s good reason for Bealieu’s excitement. He’s getting ready to release his debut album under the Groan Boy moniker. It’s also going to be the first record released by Big Boat Records, a company Bealieu co-founded with fellow local musician Patrick Hamilton. Groan Boy has come a long way since starting as a hobby project three years ago. After having a bag of guitar pedals stolen, Bealieu went on a shopping spree for new ones, inspiring him to start experimenting with new sounds and writing songs based around them. Once he was invited to open for The Cryptozoologists at a record release show, the need to get

a full set together pressured Bealieu to churn out as many songs as he could in just one month. He was joined by Patrick Docherty on drums, and the earliest incarnation of Groan Boy was born. Today, in addition to Bealieu and Docherty, the band is rounded out by Erik Vasseur on bass and Aki Jonasson on vox organ. The quartet recorded their debut album at Old Crow Recording studio, with Patrick Hamilton producing. With the record complete and ready for release, Groan Boy will perform a special album release concert Aug. 10 at the Black Box in the Heart of Riverdale. “Don’t expect super happy, fun, dancy music,” said Bealieu. “It’s a bit dark and weird. But it’s gonna be loud. It’s a pretty small room, and there’s gonna be a lot of amplifiers. It’s gonna be a rock concert.” In addition to a loud rock show, the record release show will see the unveiling of a large art project and will have Mario Kart set up for those who want to play. The show

is an all ages event, but there will be a cash bar. The evening will also feature an opening set from The Cryptozoologists. “It’s a good little come-around because my first show was opening for their first CD release,” said Bealieu. “They’re a really fun band as well.” Though the number of concert venues in Whitehorse may be dwindling as of late, forcing artists to get more creative with their event planning, Bealieu maintains that the local music scene is still going strong. Bealieu himself has been involved in local music since his high school days, and is grateful that Groan Boy has been embraced by the local community and its supportive fans. While the Yukon often attracts creative types and has a thriving arts scene, the isolation of the territory is still a barrier for bands who want to gain some recognition elsewhere in Canada or the world. This is where Big Boat Records comes in. Originally just the farfetched idea of two high school

kids, in the past year, Big Boat Records has grown into a legitimate company that has already been involved in music videos, single releases and even represented at music festivals. Local fans have probably seen, or at least heard of, the Beneath the Broadcast project by now, a video project in which nine local groups, including Groan Boy, each performed a song in the CBC basement. The project was made by Something Shows in collaboration with Big Boat Records and Brendan Preston Productions, and received widespread coverage around Canada. Bealieu agrees that the project was a good way to get the word out about Big Boat Records, and the company has to keep that momentum going. Its first album release should see the label pushed to new heights, much to the excitement of its founders. In some senses, the record company is still in its infancy, but Bealieu and Hamilton have big plans for the future, including signing on more artists, releasing more records and video pro-

jects, and hosting showcases for the label. One of the goals is to bring awareness to the Yukon’s unique music scene in ways that independent artists often don’t have the means to do themselves. “When you’re operating under a label, people instantly take you more seriously,” said Bealieu. Groan Boy’s album release show takes place Aug. 10 at the Heart of Riverdale. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the Cryptozoologists kick off the live music at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are available online now. In addition to its CD release at the concert, the album will also be available on all streaming platforms. For more information, check out the event on Groan Boy’s Facebook page.
