Sid’s Treasures with Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé

he smoke has begun to clear in Beaver Creek, but hot embers still smoulder along the highway. We haven’t had a fire like this one for many years, not this close to town. Sid has the morning off so we are heading down to Livesey’s near the Creek. It’s no more than a three-minute drive from the Visitor Information Centre. Sid pulls over onto the shoulder near the bank of the creek. Down the hill from us sits Livesey’s—an old wooden building that is starting to blend into its surroundings. “It’s kind of grown around him, all the trees. It’s not safe to go in there anymore,” said Sid. The building is now owned by a local couple, but before that, it was owned by local politician, John Livesey. Sid brought with him two campaign posters of Livesey’s, one

Vote Livesey ... cont’d ture, I ask if Livesey built the store. “It was an old camp for when the [Alaska] Highway was being built. He bought it and converted it. Him and his wife Freda in ’49 … he had a store, he had everything—post office, groceries, hardware, clothing, ammunition, guns, everything. Ann amazing general store. And if he didn’t have something, he would order it for you.” The way Sid describes Livesey’s general store reminds me of his own interpretation of a general store at Bordertown Garage and Museum. I wonder if the memory of Livesey’s store inspired some of Sid’s decorative choices. “He ran the store until about the mid-80s. Freda died here

On the Cover and he stayed for about a year and then moved away. He died a few years ago [in 2005] in Comox, British Columbia at 94.” I ask Sid how long he knew Livesey. “I’ve known him since 1961. When the kids were small, we always went there and he had candy for them. It was just him and his wife running the store. I still have lots of paper on the company from when it was the Beaver Creek Trading Company.” We head back to town

You can’t help but wonder who occupied those dwellings and who occupies them now. he average reader may be surprised to learn that disc golf tournaments even exist. Indeed, many people are still unfamiliar with the bastard cousin of traditional ball golf. Not only are these tournaments taking place all over the world, but they are drawing massive numbers of people into various disc golf meccas across the globe. These events are a notable boost to local economies, especially in small towns, but they’re also highly competitive events that will draw the best of the best. This was the case at the recent B.C. Open, held in Langley. It is difficult to imagine the spectacle of more than 200 players congregating on the newly-built Raptor’s Knoll course. Picture hundreds of people carrying custom backpacks filled with a seemingly endless variety of brightly colored discs. These dedicated disc golfers come from all walks of life, in all shapes and sizes and cross all

The only thing you can be sure they all have in common is the absolute love, occasionally bordering on obsession, for the sport of disc golf. This is all too apparent when you give a listen to the chattering among the players. The talk is technical, full-on disc golf lingo is being used, strategies for attacking the challenges of the course are being shared and the smiles are everywhere. This is a massive group who have found their people. The competition that comes out to an event like the B.C.

Open is fierce. Make no mistake, the attendees are athletes who have committed hundreds of hours to practicing the perfect form, getting their discs out with enough spin to smash the chains dead flat. If you have never seen someone effortlessly making 30-foot shots, you may not fully understand what this means, but rest assured, it represents a ton of practice. The folks who led this tournament barely missed any of these, regardless of the division. It was a cont’d on page 5 ...

Hundreds of disc golfers stormed the Raptor’s Knoll course in Langley, B.C. for the B.C. Open sight to behold and the Yukon was well-represented. The tournament, known as an ‘A’ tier, consisted of three days of competition, with each division playing three rounds of 18 holes. The course, Raptor’s Knoll, is arguably one of the best and most challenging disc golf courses in Canada. Many players had their hopes and dreams of placing high in the standings shattered by just a few tough holes. Such was not the case for Whitehorse’s own, Al Hill. Hill, coming off of a recent gold medal victory at Anchorage’s King of the Hill tournament, was able to play safe, or “boring” golf, as he called it, missing most of the course’s punishing out of bounds and shooting a +3 over par on his first round. This lead him into contention with the top of the standings for day two, or chase card, as it is called. Hill was joined on that card, tied for eighth place with Whitehorse disc golf advocate and Whitehorse Disc Golf Association club President, Ryan Norquay. A fine achievement for the Yukon’s disc golf scene. The day’s action was heated, but when the dust had settled, Hill had man-

aged to continue his steady play, shooting par, to find his way onto the lead card in a multi-way tie for third place. Day three saw many ups and down across all the scorecards in every division, as players struggled to balance risk and reward in an effort to pull themselves up in the rankings. Fortunately for Hill, he was able to stick to his game plan of “safe” golf, playing an excellent round, shooting an even par at the end. This put Hill in a comfortable second place finish, two strokes ahead of Edmonton’s Jeremy Gauthier, who took third. Chance Stad, of B.C., took the win with a -5 in the advanced division, playing an almost error-free final round. Whitehorse’s, Ben Monkman came in 33rd, while Norquay landed 24th. There was plenty of action in other divisions, as after the first round they are organized by score. This

was incredibly true in the case of Jamie Roddick, an Ontario transplant now living here playing for the Yukon. The young disc golf wizard was able to pull the lead in the intermediate division from day one, shooting an outstanding -5 under par. He was able to maintain first place through all three rounds, ending with a final score of -7. This was only Roddick’s second tournament to be sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), making his win all the more impressive. Josh Paton (full disclosure—the same one writing this piece) was able to recover from a devastating round two to land in 29th place in the same division. As the tournament wound down and awards approached, the relief was palpable. As the weary golfers took their trophies, bags, carts and coolers and packed them away in their respective vehicles, there was a slight melancholy in the air. This quickly faded into talk of the next big tournament, who was going where and what the best courses were to hit between here and there. Only one thing was certain for these disc golfing maniacs— they will meet again soon to take on the next challenge. You can rest assured that, just like those discs left in the blackberries, they will be reunited. METHOD

Set oven at 400 F. Place bacon on a rack on a lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with half the brown sugar, then sprinkle with black pepper.

Place in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and carefully flip. Sprinkle with remaining brown sugar and black pepper and cook for another 10 minutes, or until bacon is crisp and sugar is caramelized.

_ Brilliant Vega Our tempestuous neighbour T

he returning darkness to our evening sky of late summer is dominated by one very bright star. Vega, high overhead in the tiny constellation Lyra, is more than twice the mass of our sun, but punches out a whopping 40 times the luminosity of our home star. And at only 25 light years (ly) away—just down the block, astronomically speaking—Vega’s tremendous luminosity punctuates our evening sky with a sharp blue-white brilliance. Vega is very easy to locate at this time of year. Simply face south and Vega will be the brightest star almost at the zenith aka directly overhead. If the zenith were 12 o’clock, and the horizon in front of you were 9 o’clock, then Vega would be at about eleven-thirty, slightly to your left if it’s early evening. This will work even better if you look for Vega well before dark, as most other fainter stars will be eliminated. But Vega is difficult to miss—a beautiful blue-white beacon high overhead, brilliantly heralding the return of our deep dark skies.

Vega is 2.75 times the diameter of our sun at its equator, but only 2.25 solar diameters through its poles. Our sun (right), taking almost four weeks to make one revolution, is almost spherical When we look at Vega, we are looking in the direction that our sun and entire solar system travels at a rate of about 240 kilometres per second. We, along with the billions of other stars within the spiral arms, orbit around the centre of our galaxy. This centre, the super-massive black hole in the direction of Sagittarius that gravi-

Schematic of the precession of the Earth’s axis tationally anchors the rest of the galaxy, is off to your left, well below the horizon. Although we will never catch up to Vega, as it’s whizzing along ahead of us at breakneck speed around the galactic centre, we will, with gravitational tugs this way and that, get to within 17 ly of our neighbour. That won’t happen for more than 200,000 years, but Vega will then out-rival even Sirius, and be brighter than any other star in our sky, no matter the season. But something quite intriguing will happen much sooner than that. Notice on a globe of our planet, how the two anchor points, located at the geographic north and south poles, define the spin of the globe. If you were to stand at the place on Earth represented by the upper anchor point on the globe, you would, of course, be standing at the north pole. The star Polaris (our North Star) would appear directly above you, at your zenith. Its position in the sky would never change from your zenith while our planet continued in its daily spin. Well, almost never. In truth, our planet is like a spinning top that’s starting to wobble. So the spot in the sky that the axis of spin of our planet points to is constantly changing, or precessing, however imperceptibly slow that may be. This precession of our polar axis is slowly scribing an arc across the sky. In less than 13,000 years it will be pointing in the vicinity of Vega and Vega will become our new North Star! So be sure to stick around for that! Likewise, when we look up at Vega, we are actually looking down onto its own polar axis. So if there are planets in orbit

around Vega, and if one of them should harbour life, when that life looks up, our Sun will be their North Star! Vega initially appeared in observations to be hotter than it should for a star of its size and type. But astronomers eventually determined that’s because it is spinning very rapidly. Our sun takes close to four weeks to complete one revolution at its equator. (Stars, being a gaseous plasma, flow more than spin, their equators travelling faster than near their poles.) Vega, on the other hand, completes the same in only 11 hours. This is fast enough that it is beginning to flatten a bit. Vega is 2.75 times the diameter of our sun through its equator, but only 2.25 times through its poles. So as we look down on its polar region, the surface we are looking at is closer to its interior where the heat from fusion is being produced. The surface at the poles is therefore much hotter than at its equator and, thus, the higher temperature observed. Vega is a wild star living a fast and furious life. Being a larger star, it is fusing its hydrogen into helium at a prodigious rate. And at less than a half a billion years old, it is already halfway through its life. Within 500 million years, Vega will spend the last of its hydrogen (and perhaps some of its helium) and turn off. And without the outward thrust of fusion to counter the inward pull of gravity, the state of equilibrium will be broken. All the mass of Vega will then gravitationally collapse towards its centre. It is difficult to imagine the inevitable “crunch” of all that matter meeting down in the centre, but, not surprisingly, the pressures and temperatures become great enough to break open the atoms themselves. The polar axis presently points to a spot near Polaris, our North Star. But around the year 14,000, it will be pointing near Vega, making Vega our new North Star. It takes 26,000 years to complete one precessional cycle, when Earth’s axis will be pointing back in the vicinity of Polaris “shell” of the atom breached, all the space that makes up the vast majority of the volume of the atom is now available. So all the nuclei of all the atoms can now utilize that freed-up space and keep collapsing and get packed down much closer together. And keeping in mind that it is in the nucleus of the atom where all the mass (the stuff that gravity acts on and makes things feel heavy) of matter resides, the end result is a star with a very small volume, but with a density hundreds of thousands of times that of ordinary matter. Vega will then be what is known as a white dwarf star—not fusing anymore, but ferociously hot (upwards of 300,000 degrees Celsius), and very small (Earth-sized), but incredibly dense. A teaspoon of the “stuff” of these stars weighs tons.

Vega will then have met its endgame. It will remain unchanging as it slowly cools over billions of years. Our sun is destined for the same fate, but, consuming its nuclear fuel at a much more conservative rate, will live 10 times longer and be around for billions of years after Vega is long gone. So do get out in the early evening and say hello to our tempestuous, but fascinating neighbour while you still can. Three days of family fun

Youth took part in numerous workshops at the 2018 Augusto Children’s Festival, including music, crafts, circus performance and leather-working

Augusto Festival kicks off in Haines Junction on Aug. 9 by Elke Reinauer

re you keen on learning about drama, circus, dance or crafting? The Augusto Children’s Festival features a diverse group of workshops, with a roster that includes local artists and teachers as well as groups from across North America. . This is the third year for Augusto, which begins in Haines Junction on Aug. 9. Festival organizer Darlene Sillery expects it to be as successful as last year. She thinks the festival does well because it takes place over three days and it is the only dedicated weekend art and music festival for children in the Yukon. “Children naturally love art and music, to paint, draw, create. We have a lot of young families in Haines Junction and Whitehorse families love to come out for the festival weekend. We also attract attendees from Haines and other Yukon communities.” The festival is, in part, a legacy of the Alsek Music Festival which ran for 17 years in Haines Junction. That festival was a big part of every summer, with many local people participating in it. Augusto is similar, with community members participating as audience members (both kids and parents), presenters, volunteers or service providers. Three of the festival’s current board members worked with the Alsek Music Festival. “We believe festivals are good for communities and our current demographics in Haines Junction, of young families and active grandparents, seemed the perfect fit for a children’s festival,” said Sillery. Festival-organizers work yearround to plan and fundraise for the event. During the festival, another 50 volunteers help out. Sillery said these volunteers are never hard to come by (“we do have a lot of community support,” she said) and they make the festival happen. Some of the programming for this year’s festival includes work-

shops where kids can work with paper, feathers, fur, felt, clay, wire, paint and recycled materials on take-home projects. There will also be workshops offered by a number of the performing artists, including Southern Tutchone Dance and Song, West African Dance, Stage Presence, Physical Activity and Music, Squeakers & Kazoos, and Music Exploration. For kids who are less artistically inclined, there will be electronics workshops and storytelling workshops. A big part of the festival will be Toodler Town. “Toddler Town will be especially busy this year with six mini concerts, seven craft activities, storybook corners and play breaks. Kids will also have the opportunity to silkscreen their own cloth bag this year, for use at this festival and at future festivals,” said Sillery. Another highlight will be the Kamikaze Fireflies. The L.A.-based duo of Rob Williams and Casey Marti will perform a mix of comedy and circus entertainment on Saturday. The pair has performed for audiences all over the world and attended America´s Got Talent. In addition to performing, they will lead a workshop aimed at teaching drama skills. Cardboard boat competitions around North America challenge the engineering and construction skills of participants

rmed with cardboard, duct tape and your wits, can you get a boat to float? That’s the challenge that Samantha Hand, executive director of Skills Canada Yukon, is issuing to Yukon youth this month. As part of programming to engage Yukoners in trades and applied skills, the organization has taken some ideas from other jurisdictions to see if Yukon kids can make cardboard float. “Skills Canada is a national organization,” Hand said. “Skills Alberta does (the cardboard boat competition) on a huge scale throughout the year. We thought it would be a great opportunity for people to do something with their hands, like people do in the trades.” Hand notes that everything for the two, three or four-person teams is supplied. Skills Canada Yukon will supply each team with recycled cardboard (equal amounts for fairness), a supply of duct tape to put the boat together and special cutters for cardboard that have guards on them. This limits the potential for younger participants to injure themselves, though parents will still be asked to watch younger children when

they are cutting up cardboard. There are only two things that parents should plan to bring for participants. “We encourage people to bring their own life jackets, but the pool does have some in supply,” Hand said. “You have to have one to be in the boat. And a swimsuit because your boat might not float; it is cardboard!” Skills Canada Yukon has partnered with the Last Splash event at the Canada Games Centre pool on August 16 because it seemed like the right time to risk cardboard in the pool. Hand noted that with cardboard getting wet and potentially ripping in the pool, it was a good idea to have the event right before the pool is drained anyways. Contrary to first impressions, cardboard boats have seen success at similar competitions around North America. Hand noted that Skills Alberta regularly has boats constructed that seat multiple people and can row the full distance across a pool, so organizers hope to see some successful trips at the Last Splash. Although, there is one challenge facing the bold boaters—a lack of paddles. “Participants have to build

their own paddles,” Hand explained. “So we’ve seen people put scotch tape on their hands to make paddles, if that’s part of their plan.” In addition to the cardboard boat race, Skills Canada Yukon will continue its programming in the fall, visiting classes, at the invitation of teachers, and providing speaking opportunities for Skills Canada graduates to share their success stories in the program. This first cardboard boat race is a test to see if the community has an appetite to challenge themselves, but if it proves popular, Hand sees it becoming an annual event. audeville has made a comeback in Dawson City. Cabin of Curiosities, a play which premiered last year on a limited run at the historic Palace Grand Theatre, has been reprised by The Friends of the Palace Grand Society, a non-profit organization that presents performing arts productions that reflect Dawson’s regional identity. “Our goal of a two-month, full run production has been achieved,” said Robin Sharp, principal writer and one of the lead actors in the play. “We only did five shows last year–this year, we’re doing 20.” Sharp, who studied theatre for four years in Toronto, auditioned in 2018 for the role of The Collector, one of the lead roles in Cabin of Curiosities. He won the part and is once again playing that role this year. He also joined the board of directors of the Friends of the Palace Grand Society and is helping to apply for grants. “We proved ourselves last year to funders, so now we’re getting support from the Yukon Arts Fund, Lotteries Yukon, City of Dawson and local businesses,” said Sharp. “The money helps develop the opportunity to create theatre in the Klondike. We have a lot of talent here.” Sharp said the concept for the play is the same as last year–a young couple from the prairies

Friends of the Palace Grande put on vaudeville shows in 2018 find themselves stranded along the banks of the Yukon River and come upon a mysterious character known as The Collector. The couple is welcomed into The Collector’s cabin, where they are introduced to his shelf of “curiosities.” Each of these objects has a unique history and a story to tell. The stories this year, however, are different. So is the theme. “Last year’s theme was about disconnecting from technology,” said Sharp. “This year, the stories centre around listening to nature and not taking it for granted. There’s much more versatility and flexibility in the script. It’s slick and sharp.” Justine Hobbs, co-director (along with local Ange Bonnici) and co-producer of the show, agreed. “It’s the first time in a long time that the Palace Grand has a long running show,” she said. “It’s another option for something to do in town and it’s family friendly. I’m very excited about the quality of production.” Hobbs has worked in theatre, both on and off the stage, and has a master of theatre performance. One of the founding members of Friends of the Palace Grand Theatre, Hobbs was the prelimin-

ary writer who created the overall structure of the play in 2018. And just like last year, she said, this year’s production has something for everyone. There are poems, an Indigenous pre-gold rush perspective, modern stories and live music. “It’s a good length (75 minutes), the live music gets the audience going and people enjoy hearing Yukon stories,” she said. “I’m very proud of the talent Dawson has to offer, both on and behind the stage.” Cabin of Curiosities runs from Tuesdays to Thursdays at the Palace Grand Theatre in Dawson City until Aug. 15, 2019, with a matinee on Sunday, Aug. 11.
