ith its northwest orientation, Teslin Lake is considered a sort of bird funnel, directing birds south during fall migration. Many migrating birds are attracted to the lakeshore near the mouth of 10-Mile Creek. So many that a seasonal bird banding and monitoring station—the Teslin Lake Bird Observatory—was started there in 2005. Its aim is to support migration monitoring research and education, while also raising public awareness about Yukon’s bird life. Expert staff and volunteers

Bird Observatory) and Teslinraised Ben Schonewille, who once worked with Murphy-Kelly as a summer student. Leading the banding and monitoring work is bander-in-charge, Jukka Jantunen. There’s lots to see, with an average of 50 species banded each year, represented by 1,000 birds in one recent season, Murphy-Kelly said. Jantunen said warblers (Wilson’s and orange-crowned) and flycatchers (especially the alder flycatcher) make up a large wave of migrants until the last week of August, when sparrows and thrushes will begin to appear. “This year the number of Wilson’s warblers (a tiny yellow bird with a black cap and sweet song) was way up and it arrived much earlier than usual,” Murphy-Kelly said. New species are also showing up. In early August a Philadelphia vireo was captured at the station. The small green-tinged songbird, which winters in Central America, had a “brood patch” on its belly, indicating it had raised some young. It was one of 50 birds Jantunen banded that day. The camp-like station, set up outside amid stunning views, includes some tables and lawn cont’d on page 3 ...

work always takes precedence. The station is open to the public daily from sunrise, for six hours, until October 10. The Yukon Bird Club is organizing a field trip there on Sept. 15. Anyone interested is invited to meet at the Teslin Lake Campground at 8 a.m. Signs direct visitors to a path leading to the lakeshore station site. It’s a day trip you’ll remember. Happy birding! The Orange-crowned Warbler is one of the many songbird species that are banded at the Teslin Lake Bird Observatory during fall migration

season so far, with over 20 species and 830 individual birds banded up to the first week of August,” Murphy-Kelly said. Migratory land birds are the main focus of bird-banding, but non-migratory birds, such as boreal chickadees, are also being studied. Tracking hawks and eagles (raptors) are a priority during “watches,” when staff use binoculars and scopes. Shorebirds, waterbirds and waterfowl are also monitored (the bulk of swans fly over in October), but banding

chairs, a rack for “bird bags,” and binders with data sheets and records. The observatory is the northernmost member of the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network, requiring standardized protocols for banding and observing birds. It’s intense seasonal work that starts around sunrise. Nets are installed at specific locations throughout the 12-hectare site and checked for birds every 30 minutes. (Nets are closed at the end of each day.) Staff quickly remove captured birds from the fine nylon nets and place each bird in a cloth bag. The bags help to calm the birds until they can be examined and banded. Each bird is measured and data is recorded on each bird’s species, condition, age and sex. “It’s been a record-breaking

was back home in Inuvik this summer and I took the opportunity to drive to Tuk for the first time. It always hits close to the bone whenever I am there. The first time I went to Tuk, I was 12 years old. We were whaling at East Whitefish Station at the mouth of the Mackenzie River when we ran out of supplies. My dad had a whaling partner named James who had a little blue fibreglass speedboat with a 50 horsepower Mercury kicker that moved like a mustang on steroids. We made the 45-minute crossing of the Beaufort Sea in a blistering 25 minutes. I was standing the whole way, excited to be in James’ boat and at the thought of seeing Tuk for the first time. I wasn’t disappointed, as James bought me a bag of chips and a pop at The Bay. A couple of years later, me and my two sisters, Delma and Judy, flew to Tuk on Northwards Airlines for $30 return. My sisters were spending time with their boyfriends and I was busy playing street hockey with my cousins. It was a fun weekend until we got blowed in. (Blizzard, wind-bound, snow-storm.) The storm lasted all week and I got bored hanging around Tuk while everybody was in school. I remember going to Anderson’s Store and racking up about 20 free games on a pinball machine until I got kicked out. Uncle Johnny was getting tired of us complaining about having nothing to do, so he gave me the keys to his car and said to go for a ride. I could barely see over the dash, but I knew how to drive from watching my dad. Still, I took a corner too quick and wiped out a bunch of garbage barrels. Uncle Johnny just shook his head when I brought back his old Impala with a fresh dent in the door. When I turned 18, I got a job in Tuk during the oil boom years. We used to fly in and out of Tuk from Inuvik on a two-weeks-inone-week-out rotation. I was working for legendary dog musher Peter Norberg, who was my mom’s cousin. He didn’t give a damn if we were related or not though. He was trying to teach me how to run a front end loader and he would swear a blue streak from Tuk to Tijuana. His cursing must have helped because, by the end of the

While home to visit Inuvik this summer, Dennis drove for a visit to Tuk first week, I wasn’t putting the forks through any more sea cans or bouncing loads of dynamite off the forks anymore. Driving to Tuk was a whole different ball of wax though. We used to skidoo back that way to Husky Lakes to fish and hunt caribou, so I kinda knew the area. One time, me and my two cousins, Hans and Din, got lost while hunting in the area. We’d been chasing a herd of caribou through the hills and ended up in some unfamiliar territory. By the time we’d finished butchering our kill, it had gotten dark and we couldn’t see our landmarks anymore. I asked them if they wanted to just give up and die right on the spot, or try to make it home. We voted to live and try to make it home. Even though Hans was more experienced travelling on the open tundra, he looked at me for direction. There was just a sprinkling of light coming from the west, where the sun had set. I knew the Mackenzie Delta was to the west of us and if we just headed in that direction we would end up somewhere along the East Branch. Sure enough, about 90 minutes later, we crested a hill which dropped off down into the East Branch. We spent all afternoon driving around and visiting old family

friends. At one point, I was walking across the road from where we were visiting to see an old buddy when a tourist stopped me and asked me if I knew where to buy any arts and crafts for souvenirs. He said they’d been everywhere in town and were desperate to bring something back from the North. I told him to wait right there and I’d be right back. I ran into Billy’s house and, after a quick greeting, told him about the tourists outside his door looking for souvenirs. Billy had an old snow globe with an igloo inside and the word “Tuktoyuktuk” written on the base. “What about this?” he said. So I brought it out to the tourists who offered to pay $60 for it. I brought Billy the three 20s and he gave me one for commission. We’re thinking of going into business next summer. If anyone knows where to order those snow globes from, Facebook me. Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

The amazing bat As a youngster, I watched my father and various neighbourhood men swat bats with brooms in an attempt to rid the town of what they saw as a witchcraft-y nuisance. It wasn’t until later in life that I got to better know these amazing creatures. When I was 24, I worked in the lab for the International Paper Company out of London ,Ontario. I was a pilot of small airplanes. In the winter, I flew some local deer yards, counting the deer in PHOTO: Murray Martin the winter yard. I then passed this on A bat house on the back side to the local conservation officer. of the Martin garage. Part 1 of 2 in pool halls, connecting with poachers and following up with raids and court dates, word got around about a kid CO, so my boss offered a patrol area of my own in eastern Ontario. I drove home, anxious to talk to my wife about the possibility, when I noticed a large man coming towards me on the back road I was taking. He was walking away from a game reserve, carrying a double barrel shotgun and a couple pheasants. He cut down the railway tracks and I got out of my car, walked up to him and showed him my badge. A second later, he showed me the barrel of his shotgun. He pulled both triggers back and screamed that he hated cops. Fast forward a few months and I had moved to the small community of Winchester, just south of Ottawa. For a while, I continued working as a plainclothes officer, but eventually got detailed to a bat project. At the time, all I knew of them was what I’d learned as a child—their bodies were made up of very fine hair and they were pug-nosed creatures with membrane wings. But that next year, my job was to collect live bats for the lab. At the time, rabies was spreading across Canada and bats were the carrier of the deadly disease. And so we close with a quote from the late John F. Kennedy, former President of the United States of America. “A man does what he must–in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures–and that is the basis of all human morality.” Murray Martin is a former Ontario conservation officer and a longstanding member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.

Straight talk on joints Columnar joints, that is by Hugh Copland

Part Eleven PHOTO: Yukon Archives

There is a geological feature that has caught human imagination for tens of thousands of years. It has been given names, where it has appeared in different parts of the world, including the Devils Postpile, Titan’s Piazza, Los Organos and the Giant’s Causeway. All are spectacular examples of what is called columnar jointing. We have our own here in the Yukon.

C

olumnar joints occur when volcanic basalt erupts to the surface and starts to cool. Under the right conditions, it fractures into a regular pattern of six-sided hexagonal shapes. Individual columns can range from less than 50 centimetres to more than three metres across. Basalt is by far the most common volcanic rock to form columnar joints. When the basalts erupt to the surface, they can quickly form a pool of hot molten rock that measures many metres thick. This provides a large homogenous mass that contracts as it cools. Scientists have collected cores

of basalt from the Svartifoss (Black Falls) columnar basalt site in Iceland. In a lab, these cores were heated up to 1200 degrees Celsius, until the basalt melted, and then allowed to cool. Scientists found that around 870 degrees Celsius, the rock was solid enough to start fracturing. The slower the cooling, the larger the individual columns tended to be. The chemistry of the basalt can have something to do with the formation of columns, but by far the major factor is the cooling rate. Cooling is controlled by the size and thickness of the molten rock. The pattern of fracturing is the

most fascinating feature. Looking down from above, you see a series of three fractures forming from many points. The pattern is in the shape of a “Y.” Under ideal conditions, all the angles would be 120 degrees apart, creating a perfect honeycomb. Irregularities commonly occur in the form of five and seven-sided polygons, or, more rarely, three and four-sided ones. This pattern not only occurs in rocks, it also occurs in permafrost-influenced soils and in mud cracks on dry lake beds. Ice wedge polygons are common in the arctic where the active layer of the

Miles Canyon basalts 1900, prior to the dam

permafrost expands and contracts seasonally, fracturing the soil and forming hexagons. Ice wedge polygons can be several metres across. Why these materials fracture in such a regular pattern is still not known for certain. The process can be described with complex mathematic formulas based on hexagonal patterns maximizing the area-to-fracture ratio. You can have more fun by making your own columnar joints though. Someone discovered that corn starch will, under the right conditions, dry out and crack into perfect hexagonal columnar joints. Try it yourself by mixing corn

Miles Canyon columnar basalts today

starch and water in equal weights, then setting it aside to dry in a pan. I have tried it twice and have yet to be able to duplicate the exact conditions to develop perfect hexagons, but both times, definite regular fracture patterns formed. Throughout a number of locations around the world, conditions have been ideal for the formation of stunning examples of columnar joints. Giant’s Causeway in County Antrium on the northern coast of Ireland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legend has it that the great warrior leader Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) was starting to build a causeway across the water to Scotland. He wanted to get to his foe, the giant Benandonner, but turned back when he saw how big Benandonner was. Giant’s Causeway formed 60 million years ago when lava flowed down a valley until it dammed up and formed a molten lake 90 metres deep. There were several other eruptions that formed many other features you can see at the site. On the Isle of Staffa, on the Scottish side across from Giant’s Causeway, is Fingal’s Cave. Like Giant’s Causeway, the columnar joints seem to form steps coming out of the sea. The two locations actually formed from the same geological event. The unique feature at Staffa is a sea cave that is lined entirely with perfect columnar joints. The Celtic people named the location “Uamh-Binn” or Cave of Melody due to its unique acoustics. It has inspired songs from diverse artists such as Mendelssohn and Pink Floyd. Jules Verne visited the site in Victorian times. That visit inspired some of the fantastic settings that show up in many of Verne’s novels. cont’d on page 11...

Straight talk on joints ... cont’d see excellent columnar joints in our area is the road into Telegraph Creek, B.C. There will be a future Backyard Geology article on the amazing volcanic rocks in this area. One of the most fascinating parts of geology is observing how nature can produce such beautiful symmetry. It is evident all the way from the microscopic beauty of crystal formation to the largescale regularity and order of columnar jointing.

At Devil’s Postpile in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, basalt erupted around 100,000 years ago. The basalt formed a lake over 120 metres deep. It then solidified into a mass of columns up to 20 metres high and more than a metre across. The location is near the crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, near a low pass that has been used as a trading route since humans first came to the area. Indigenous artifacts found there have been dated at around 7,500 years old. Devil’s Tower in the Black Hills of Wyoming was originally named Bear Lodge, or Tree Rock, by the Cheyenne, Lakota, and Shoshone peoples who first inhabited the area. They all have fascinating legends on how the feature was formed. The area is considered a sacred site and is still used for traditional ceremonies. Even extraterrestrials are drawn to the mountain. The climax of the 1977 classic movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” occurred at Devil’s Tower.

If

The mountain is almost 400 metres tall and the size of a football field on top. Geologists have several different theories on how it formed. Rather than basalt, it is made of a rarer rock named phonolite. The rock sounds like a bell when struck with a hammer, thus its name. Locally, we have our share of locations to see columnar jointing. The most accessible are the columnar basalts in Miles Canyon, right near the suspension bridge. In his 1883 expedition down the Yukon River, Frederick Schwatka described what he called

the Grand Cañon of the Yukon. “The walls of the cañon are perpendicular columns of basalt not unlike the diminutive Fingal’s Cave in appearance … ” he wrote. Geologists with the Yukon Geological Survey have dated the basalts at Miles Canyon at around eight to nine million years old. Similar (though younger) basalts of the same unit occur near Alligator Lake and Ibex Mountain. Near Alligator Lake, flows are up to 300 metres deep. The thickest flows exposed in the Miles Canyon area are on the river below the dam. They are 20 metres thick. There are also good columnar joints visible from the Alaska Highway just west of Rancheria. Those flows are related to the columnar joints you can see high on the bluffs at the confluence of the Pelly and Yukon Rivers, across from Fort Selkirk. These basalts are known as the Selkirk Volcanics and are two to three million years old. One of the very best areas to

Richard’s Tire Tips

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES?

RECOVER FASTER WITH US!

Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Work (WCB) Injuries Acupuncture/IMS Persistent Pain

Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

Aging with grace

hen I accepted the call to become the ordained minister at Whitehorse United Church, I was living in rural New Brunswick. That was 10 years ago, in 2009. It may be a function of my age that it seems, in some ways, like yesterday. All the feelings associated with that decision are still quite fresh in my mind and heart. I was excited. It felt right. (How to explain that inner knowing has always been beyond me, but there it is.) With the move came difficult goodbyes and the breaking of ties that also break the heart, but overwhelmingly I was ready for the move. In our church, the traditional time to begin a new call is July 1. I asked for a September start instead, for one reason—my friend Joyce. Joyce’s birthday is Aug. 6 and that year, she was turning 90. A group of us had been planning her party for months and I just couldn’t leave until we’d celebrated the birthday with her. Whitehorse United Church agreed. I stayed. Joyce’s party was a hit. As I left her that day, I was thinking … well, just what you’d imagine my thoughts would be, leaving my 90-year-old friend to move across the country. I hugged her extra close and waved to her as I drove away. I was sure that this would be the last time we’d see each other. This year, I was back in New Brunswick for Joyce’s 100th birthday. She’s living in her own home and our telephone chats include world events, updates on our families and the church family, and music. All of this has sparked in me an awareness of, and apprecia-

A Message from the Minister Happy Back to School Week! This is a very busy time for students, families, teachers and staff. New and returning school council members will be rolling up their sleeves and connecting with school communities. As students head back to school across the territory, safety on buses and our roads is a top priority. Please remember school zones, speed limits, and to STOP when buses are signaling. Parents and families, please talk to your children about how to safely ride the school bus and how to pay attention to cars to safely get to school. Safety is all of our responsibility! This is an exciting time for the Department of Education as we continue to modernize our education system and students continue to have new experiences and guide their learning. Yukon First Nations’ ways of knowing and doing, language and culture have been integrated into all grades. All Yukon students will benefit from a modern education system that reflects the rich and diverse cultural landscape of Yukon. I wish you all a safe and exciting 2019–20 school year!

Hon. Tracy-Anne McPhee Minister of Education

tion for, the elders in my life. I’ve been blessed beyond measure to have had an array of elders in my life who have formed and moulded me. Of all the things I could say about that, this is what I’m most aware of right now—so many of them were (and still are) fiercely activist. Brave, feisty, mouthy and unrelenting in the face of whatever injustices presented themselves at the time. I never want to romanticize these folks or make of them what they are not. But the truth is, many of the elders in my life have been models of resistance and advocates for social justice. Some of them farmed all day, cared for children and aging relatives and then, on the side, with whatever energy was left at the end of each day, they organized, strategized, served on committees and worked for unions or political parties that promised real change. They wrote letters to the editor, taught Sunday School (and if you think THAT’s not activist, let’s talk!) and prayed. (Ditto.) As I move into this time of my life when I’m the one who is the elder, a possible mentor to youth who will follow, I want to be brave and outspoken in the face of the outrageous injustice of our own day. I’m thankful for having lived long enough to be an elder. I hope and pray that I honour that gift well. Happy birthday, Joyce! Beverly Brazier is the ordained minister at Whitehorse United Church. She writes sermons regularly, but also enjoys the writers’ group at WUC that encourages her to expand her repertoire.

Dir. M. Kehoe, J. Tosoni, 2019, Canada, 91 min. In Canada’s history, there are few people who signified the nation’s modern confidence in its arts more than Gordon Lightfoot. Sparing nothing about Lightfoot’s weaknesses and failures as well as his triumphs in a film that includes wonderful archival material and terrific performances. “While the film could easily indulge in baby boomer nostalgia, Lightfoot doesn’t let it. Now 80 years old, he’s gregarious and reflective.” ~ Richard Trapunski, Now Toronto

8pm – The Last Black Man in San Francisco Dir. J. Talbot, 2019, USA, 121 min. Jimmie Fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. A wistful odyssey populated by skaters, squatters, street preachers, playwrights, and other locals on the margins, this sweeping feature is a poignant meditation about hometowns and how they’re kept alive by the people who love them. “The Last Black Man in San Francisco is an indelibly beautiful story of love, family and loss in America from two childhood friends turned filmmakers.” ~ Manohla Dargis, NYT Tix: YAC Box Office + yukontickets.com YukonFilmSociety.com

Peter had been grieving his last dog, Oliver, and was not sure how he would replace his beloved companion. Then, one day, he needed some basil, so he grabbed $50 and jumped into his car to visit the Fireweed C o m mu n i t y Market.

Peter tells me, “People always ask why I don’t put a pack on him or why I don’t get him to pull a sled. And it’s because I just spoil him too much. You know, I couldn’t do it. I know he’d give

Sometimes they arrive in the middle of the night, but they are welcome at any hour. Peter has designated dog couches and he’s proudly installed a dog door so they can all come and go, and lounge about, as they please. When the pack isn’t indoors, they are sprawled on his dock, his houseboat, his lawn or anywhere within Peter’s immediate vicinity. They don’t want to stray too far and miss the chance to go along on a bike ride, hike, ski or skate. Peter takes them out several times each day.

I asked if his past girlfriends have been Grizzly Valley accepting of his ultra Farms was selling dog-friendly home. Couch Surfers. Peter definitely likes to spoil his canine friends. Upon meeting at his home for the first time, I was immediately struck by how everything was organized for a dogs’ pleasure.

“I’ve lost too many dogs,” Peter says more seriously when we discuss their too-short-for-our-liking lifespan. “I want Basil to outlive me, so I don’t have to deal with the grief,” he half jokes. “But I have to have dogs in my life. I just crave them.”

T

he fall weather is coming in hot and so are the salmon. This August long weekend I took advantage of the extra day and headed to Haines, Alaska to check out the salmon run. It’s not quite Coho season yet, but the river is full of pinks and sockeyes. Whether you’re into fishing or not, now is a great time to pack up the car and to Haines to check out this annual phenomenon. At this time of year, the rivers around the small Alaskan town are spotted with a waders-clad population, all hoping to reel in something tasty. Where is the best spot to set up shop? That’s up for wild debate. Everyone seems to have a secret spot they like to go to and a favourite lure to use. I can’t speak to a recipe for success, but I can tell you that if you see a bear, that’s not where you want to be. I haven’t fished since I was about five years old, so to say I was a little rusty is a generous understatement. With some careful guidance though, I was able to catch multiple rocks, trees and even a couple of lost fishing lures. All on my very first day out. Not bad for an amateur, right?

Pretty wonderful way to spend the day Close up of a roe sac, salmon eggs which are sometimes eaten or used for bait

The second day I even caught a not-already disintegrating salmon. I had no idea what to do with it once I reeled it in. Thankfully I had some skilled professionals on standby to take over the next steps. The following day we were unable to go out on our chartered

halibut tour due to bad weather, but it’s hard to complain when you have great company and a healthy pile of salmon reeled in. I contributed minimally to the salmon stock we collected, but had a wonderful time enjoying the outdoors and sometimes even casting in the intended direction. Warning: fish may still flop around hours after being caught, even when already gutted. If you are easily startled I recommend not standing near the water’s edge over a pile of recently caught fish because they may just start flopping around again and send you flying into the river.

Not into fishing? It’s still quite the spectacle to go for a drive along the coast from Haines up the Lutak Inlet towards the Chilkoot Lake Recreation site. There, you’ll see the frenzied spawning fish propelling themselves upstream and a huge collection of people wading the waters after them. It’s not uncommon to see bears raiding the plush rivers, or to catch sight of eagles soaring overhead. Plus, there’s tons of great hiking in the area and spectacular sight-seeing to fill up your day. Whatever adventures you get up to, it’s almost mandatory that you
