ometime before the beginning of winter, the old CIBC building on Front Street will turn grey and I’m quite certain that some people will be upset. The building has been going through changes since the town bought it for $170,000 back in 2013. I don’t think we had any idea how much potentially toxic material would have to be removed, or exactly what shape the roof was in, but we’ve been moving incrementally forward in getting it to the point where it could become useful instead of just being a neglected eyesore. This summer, we’ve been working on replacing some of the ornamental tin that was used to make a wooden frame building look like stonework. As part of the process, we had to decide what colour to

paint it. In my time here, it’s always been a sort of sandy yellow and I quite like that, but there’s abundant evidence to show that this was not always the case. Many photographs show that it used to be white. A deeper dive into the research has established that it started out as a sort of rock or slate grey. This is a choice that makes sense when you consider that the original intention was for it to appear to be made of stone. Still, I expect to hear some people complain about it. It’s happened in the past. In the 1990s the restoration of the Commissioner’s Residence gave said residence the fresh yellow coat we’ve known for the last 30 years. But before that, it was white, and quite a few people were unhappy when the Parks

Canada renovations restored it to what the records show were its colours during the years that it actually served as a residence. Not to pick on Parks Canada here, but the restorations to Robert Service’s cabin a few years later produced another uproar. For many years the grounds around the cabin were neatly kept and visitors enjoyed looking at the sod roof that appeared behind the antlers which Service mentioned in his farewell poem to the cabin. A more detailed look at some of the photographs taken while Service lived there, from 1909 to 1912, revealed that the Bard of the Yukon was not much for yard work and that the roof in photos from the time was cont’d on page 3 ...

Changes are not always welcome, even if they are historically accurate... cont’d made of tin rather than sod. Not terribly far away from that Eighth Avenue site, there were a couple of similar structures roofed with sod. In the case of Service’s abode, however, it appears that Edna Clarke, the woman from whom he rented the place, had been mindful of Dawson’s tendency to burn down and had gone with the recommended tin roof. So, in keeping with its mandate, Parks replaced the roof and let the yard become a bit more like the shaggy place it once had been. There were complaints. One letter, which appeared in the Klondike Sun, was penned by a former Parks employee who had enjoyed interpreting Service for summer visitors over a number of years. He was quite upset that the place he recalled so well had been changed. So maybe you can see why I expect there will be some complaints when the peeling yellow paint on the old CIBC building is finally replaced by a slate grey coat later this season. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Helping prevent FASD A barbecue in Shipyards Park hopes to raise awareness on Sept. 9

Attendees enjoyed last year’s barbecue developmental characteristics that may occur to an individual who was exposed prenatally to alcohol. Often, there are no physical characteristics to show that the individual may be living with FASD. However, changes in the brain and other parts of the body may still have occurred that can affect the day-to-day life of an individual. Metaphors can help people understand the difficulties faced by people with FASD. Imagine that the messages to and from the brain are the road systems we’re all familiar with. You can speed along a clear paved highway because the route is clear and you can get where you need to go efficiently. Messages sent along a pathway not affected by alcohol would be like that, with a

clear path to and from the brain. For someone whose has FASD, the road may be more like a gravel, windy, one-lane road with potholes and bumps. The message may at times still get there, but it could take time, may have stopped and then proceeded, or even gotten stuck. This process may need support or help, and is very tiring. Everyone is different and everyone deserves respect. Our differences are what we all have in common. For more information on FASDservices in the Yukon, or the barbecue on September 9, please contact FASSY at info@fassy.org or 393-4948. he Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society of Yukon (FASSY) is marking International Fetal Acohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day on Sept. 9 with a barbecue lunch at Shipyards Parks. The day helps raise awareness about FASD around the world. Sept. 9 was chosen because, as the ninth day of the ninth month, the number represents the nine months of pregnancy. The goal is that this will remind us to pause and consider abstaining from alcohol during that time. International FASD Awareness Day is represented by “The FASD Knot,” originally designed by Bonnie Buxton & Brian Philcox of Canada. The knot is worn on your chest to support work to inform the world about FASD. The term FASD itself describes a wide range of physical/neuro-

The FASD Knot symbolises the following: • The circle symbolizes the womb, the baby’s head, the human brain and the world. • The cord refers to the umbilical cord and the cord that joins us all together in caring. • The reef knot cannot be broken or snapped. The more you pull, the tighter the bond. • The frayed ends represent the damaged nervous system which cannot be repaired.

Murray hangs out on a limb for misunderstood bats better than any birds, though nature can be tough on the bat, with unfavourable weather being one of the biggest contributors to the bat’s short life span. Hail, hard rain, snow and temperature ranges limit the lifespan of the bat. During the winter, the bat will go into a deep sleep and may only breathe once every five minutes. Should it wake due to hunger during this time, there are no insects to eat. Of course, we pose a threat as well. The introduction of wind mills along the eastern shores of North America has almost eliminated the bat from that part of America. Bats fly into the wind turbulence behind the windmills while trying to catch flying insects. This can cause the thin wing membranes of the bat to be badly damaged. Hardly how we should treat the creature that controls so many of our most pesky insects. I might suggest we build some simple bat houses. Secure a piece of carpet, or really rip up the wood to line

the bat box so bats can get a good hold while hanging upside down in their rest period. Bat houses should be placed at least 10 feet off the ground on the back of a garage or building. One final point on the rabies found in bats. Bats do clean themselves with their wet tongues. It’s possible that the rabies can then be on the fur of the bat. If you ever get bitten by a bat (not too likely unless you are bothering their young), get immediate attention by your doctor or hospital. Same goes for other animals though. Rabies has been found in many wild animals. If you see an animal, especially raccoons or fox, acting very strangely, stumbling along, or biting at any objects, avoid the animal and immediately call conservation. Do not approach the animal, nor touch it if you find it dead. Murray Martin is a former Ontario conservation officer and a longstanding member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.

s mentioned in last week’s column, bats across the globe have an undeserved reputation. The little brown bat that inhabits this part of the world is only one of the 2,000 kinds of bats out there. They rest can vary in size from two inches in length to the large fruit-eating bats of the Andes, which have a wing span of four feet. Our little brown bat (which helps humans out by eating a diet of insects), found throughout North America, came along 95,000,000 years after the bird family and 10,000,000 years after the flying dinosaur. I would have assumed bats predated both and also had a connection to one or the other, but apparently not. What surprised me most in considering evolution though, is that its closest resemblance is to the ape. Think about the head and the placement of the teeth! So is there any credence to the idea that bats and apes (and therefore human) are connected? Personally, I know a few people I consider rather batty, though, unlike humans, the bat uses echolocation to catch insects for dinner. Bats do this by projecting a squeak wave that bounces off the flying insect, back to the bat, which uses this feedback to catch the bug. Or bugs, as the bats in our part of the world eat half their weight in insects each night. Most people consider the bat to be a lousy, dirty, infected creature. In reality, I was amazed, while working on a bat project during my time as a conservation officer in Ontario, to discover that bats may even be cleaner than humans! I have watched bats clean themselves for over an hour, meticulously going over each hair on their bodies. I even got to look at bats under microscopes and never saw signs of insects on them. Equally amazing is the little brown bat’s ability to twist and turn while in flight. They do it

(Ed. Note: International Dog Day was August 26)

Although my daughter’s dog, Sadie, and my dog, Watson, did not live in the same house, they were always good buddies on the bush and mountain trails. This photo was taken June 10th, 2013 at one of their favourite spots when they were both young whippersnappers in their prime. I don’t think either one was the dominant dog, as both took the same interests judging from these pics. They are gone, but not forgotten, surely passed on to Doggy Heaven.

Nuts for coconuts

Is there anything this fruit can’t do? by Susanne Aichele

M

y fondest memory of Mexico is the availability of fresh coconut water. Over Christmas, I pet-sat a couple dogs on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. In the mornings, I went out to get a fresh coconut off the tree. I chopped off the top, like I saw the street vendors do. Mind you, I didn’t have a sharp machete or the skills and practice they do. Besides that, I had the pressure of two dogs breathing down my neck, waiting for their share of the coconut meat, but somehow I managed. Apparently, coconut water can

be used as an IV to replace fluids. It is sterile while in the shell, as long as the shell isn’t damaged, but my rusty machete changes that in a flash and adds some iron. Drinking coconut water is like jump-starting my batteries in the morning! Coconut water has glucose, but doesn’t give you the crazy buzz and the crash that white sugar does. For me, it’s the best electrolyte you can get—definitely better than the conventional sports drinks that are generally loaded with white sugar. Once I was back in the Yukon though, I found myself in a bit of

Susanne used a machete to get into the coconut

a bind when it came to drinking coconut water. Here, you can find it in tetra packs rather than the handy compostable packages of the south. After having seen the amount of garbage that shows up on the shores of our oceans, I try not to add more garbage to the pile. So I was very happy to find a powdered version of coconut water in one of the local groceries. It’s not perfect, but it results in far less garbage than buying coconut water in containers. Plus, it’s easier to take out in the bush. Imagine a coconut washed onto a foreign shore far away from the coconut tree from which it came. While the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, the coconut can cross oceans. I love the way that coconut trees send their offspring away with food and water to settle in new places and keep the tradition going. The new coconut trees grow out of the coconut, so no matter where they end up, they have food and water to get a good head start on all the plants that grow from seeds and need to find water first. I think it shows that coconut trees are caring and benevolent plants. Fat is important for proper body functions and coconut oil is a great source. People often reduce fat in their diet in order to lose weight, but my research and experience shows that the right

PHOTOS: Susanne Aichele

Susanne visited a coconut tree each morning while pet-sitting dogs in Mexico kind of fat actually helps us to lose weight. As the saying goes, a coconut a day keeps the doctor away. Or, at least, that’s my new version of the saying. I was able to lose weight and feel more balanced when consuming an average of two coconuts a day and I didn’t even avoid sugar as much as I usually do! Coconut fat is an amazing staple in my kitchen. It’s perfect to fry anything, not that I do a lot of that. Most of the time I use water to cook in my frying pan, but coconut fat gives it that nice flavour. I also don’t have conventional creams at home. I use coconut mixed with sesame oil for my skin, which keeps it moist and supple. We shouldn’t have to think twice about eating what we put on our skin, as the skin absorbs whatever we put on it. That’s how ointments work in the first place. You can test this by rubbing a clove of

garlic on your feet and see if you can taste the garlic in your mouth. During one of my conquests to kill off candida, I even made coconut kefir out of young coconuts. I used lauric acid derived from coconut to fight off viruses and bacteria. You can use the shell to scrub your pots. An equal mix of coconut fat and olive oil is a great substitute for butter and has the perfect consistency right out of the fridge. The uses of coconut seem endless. People sometimes ask what one book you would take to an island. I could easily do without one, but I’d definitely make sure there’s a healthy coconut tree on the island. Susanne Aichele is passionate about wholistic health care for animals and people. She enjoys being out in nature, collages and creating tasty health foods.

Jagged little rocks

Dee Bailey had some work on display at the interpretive centre PHOTOS: courtesy of Dee Bailey

You oughta know about Dee Bailey’s exhibition opening on Sept. 6 by Danny Macdonald

“P

ieces of the Jagged Rocks” by artist Dee Bailey opens Sept. 6 with a reception from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Yukon Artists at Work Gallery in Whitehorse. Bailey’s engaging sculptural paintings look to celebrate wildlife and the landscape. She works with oil-based modelling clay to create paintings with depth. Coloured pieces of clay are carefully shaped and assembled into flower petals, an eagle’s body and even a wolf’s fur. When you view them, you can’t help but pause and wonder at the creative spirit.

“I hope to help people rekindle their own awe for our natural surroundings,” Bailey said. “Looking at art may help people to consider pleasant memories of time spent in nature.” This show features many works inspired by Bailey’s recent experience as the Tombstone Territorial Park Artist-in-Residence. In July, she spent two weeks living in the park and working in a wall tent studio, which allowed her to explore the flora and fauna of the area. Bailey also gave workshops and demonstrations at the interpretive center. Hiking with the

talented staff, and gathering information and reference material all contributed to her inspiration for this exhibit. “The most striking part of my July Tombstone art residency was the warm sense of community felt there. And in such a contrast to the location, being at the edge of nowhere, living a very simple and rustic life,” Bailey wrote in an email. “The inspiration was overwhelming at times. I completed a record number of paintings there and continued to produce well after. The staff and visitors I connected with were definitely the

highlight. The beauty of that park may bring out the best in people.” Bailey’s unique process is the result of years of dedicated experimentation and persistence. Working with oil-based clay, she mixes colours, creates individual shapes and applies the clay as paint with her fingers. She picks up small pebbles and bits of found plastic on her walks to add to her assemblages. The resulting pieces are a unique fusion of painting and sculpture. Bailey strives to inspire her viewers to reconnect with nature through her art. Her paintings compel viewers to to have a closer

look and to reminisce about their own wilderness experiences. She hopes to evoke feelings and memories of time spent outdoors. The exhibit opens Friday, Sept.6 and runs until Sept. 29.

Main Street bust or

A partnership between sculptor, Harreson Tanner, and patron, Rolf Hougen, continues to bring some famous Yukon faces to life on Whitehorse’s Main Street, with Edith Josie being unveiled on Sept. 12 by Amber Church

hat do Jack London, Martha Black, Pierre Berton and Ted Harrison have in common? They’ve all been commissioned by Rolf Hougen to be sculpted by Harreson Tanner to populate Whitehorse’s Main Street. This summer, Edith Josie will join them. Hougen and Tanner’s partnership began with the creation of the bust of Jack London. “I was so nervous at the unveiling,” Tanner said. “Dick North unveiled the work and at that point he was already two years older than God and a Yukon legend—it was very intimidating. “At the time I thought this was going to be a one-time thing, but then, three months later, I had an email from Rolf Hougen that said ‘another statue. Pierre Berton. Do you want to do it?’” Unfortunately the bust of Berton did not go smoothly. “I had such a hard time with Berton,” said Tanner. “I’d always found him to be a bit arrogant which made him harder for me to sculpt. I worked from thousands of photos during the creation process and I had a number of artists visit me in the studio to offer advice—something that I

Sculptor Harreson Tanner sits on Main Street with the bust he created of Jack London will never do again.” Tanner sent the finished sculpture off to the foundry to be bronzed. Then he had an alarming realization when the final piece arrived in Whitehorse. “I opened the box from the foundry and realized that the finished bronze didn’t look like Berton. It was so humiliating. When the work was unveiled on Main Street it felt like it took a full five minutes before anyone clapped.” Tanner decided that he had to create a second sculpture of Berton to replace the first. “I decided I had to make it right. It was an ethical issue for me. Both Rolf Hougen and I were much happier with the second version.” At the same time, Hougen had Tanner create a bust of Ted Harrison. “I was really excited to sculpt Ted Harrison,” said Tanner. “He was such an important artist for the Yukon and such a clever wit— I really admired him.” The Ted Harrison bust was installed first. Soon after, “Pierre Berton II” was installed, but the crew doing the install made a bit of a mistake. Instead of replacing the first Pierre Berton sculpture

with the second, they replaced Ted Harrison. Suddenly there were two busts of Pierre Berton on Main Street, a fact that did not go unnoticed by the local team of reporters at CBC. Eventually the crew sorted out who was supposed to be where and everyone was satisfied. Awhile later, Duncan Sinclair had a friend visiting him and he took her to see the Main Street busts. She enjoyed the experience, but wondered at the lack of women portrayed in the artworks. Word of this got back to Hougen and it led to another email to Tanner. “He really took it to heart,” said Tanner. “Soon after he asked me to sculpt Martha Black.” Martha garnered some local CBC coverage of her own when she disappeared. “I was in San Miguel, Mexico when my phone rang,” recalls Tanner. “it was CBC in Whitehorse and they asked me ‘where’s Martha Black?’ I laughed and said, ‘at Fourth and Main’ and they said, ‘no, she’s not.’” A short email exchanged turned up the answer—she was sitting on Rolf Hougen’s desk. One of Hougen’s employees had

noticed out his office window that the bust was hanging off its pedestal after someone had obviously tried to pull it from its mount. Hougen had Martha Black’s bust rescued from its precarious position and remounted. The newest member of Hougen’s commissions will take up residence on Main Street later this summer, just across from Martha Black. Edith Josie was a long-time writer at The Whitehorse Star. Her column, “Here are the news,” detailed life in Old Crow. Her bust will be unveiled later this summer. “Josie was an absolute delight to sculpt,” said Tanner. “My wife and I lived in Old Crow for a period of time and that connection to the community made this a really special piece to create. Josie’s grave in Old Crow is revered and joyful. It’s always full of flowers and you can tell just by looking at it how much she meant to the community.” They’re doing something special with Josie’s bust. The foundry has created two bronzes instead of one. One will be installed on Main Street, while the second goes to the John Tizya Centre in Old Crow.

Old Crow’s version will be unveiled first, by Josie’s son, William. Air North is flying the bust to the community for free and Hougen and a family member will travel North to witness the unveiling. The Whitehorse Star will also take part in the ceremony, to create a video of the event that will be shown during the Whitehorse unveiling. Josie’s grandson will have the honour of unveiling the bust in Whitehorse. “It’s been an interesting ride,” said Tanner of being sculptor to the Yukon stars. “People ask me how it happened and, to be honest, it was all a bit of a fluke. After all, who in this day and age has a patron? It has been a real honour as well though and a really delightful experience to sit with influential Yukoners and try and capture their spirit for others.” Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything, but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness. cont’d on page 16 ...

he passion to record the Yukon’s history has been a staple of Rolf Hougen’s whole life and has manifested itself in many ways. The old Hougen’s Building basement on Main Street now houses the Arts Underground and the Hougen’s Heritage Gallery, which displays special exhibits dedicated to the past. He’s recently bequeathed the Yukon Nuggets to MacBride Museum for posterity. (The Yukon Nuggets are short snippets of Yukon historical tales researched by Les McLaughlin and hosted on the Hougen’s Group of Companies website.)

Several years ago, he donated his entire collection of photographs to the Yukon Archives for safekeeping. His collection includes over 40,000 images, including the original glass plates (negatives) from E.J. Hamacher, who lived to 1937 and photographed events from the Klondike Gold Rush until his death. (Hougen’s own collection started in his teens and covers events around the territory from 1945 onwards.) But his patronage has provided Whitehorse with one iconic legacy, the beautiful hand-sculpted busts that remember some of the Yukon’s greats. These statues, which have become a marquee attraction for tourists and a mark of civic pride for residents, were not a new concept or idea for Hougen. In fact the whole collection has been decades in the making. “It all started in my mind way back in 1955,” Hougen said during an interview. “Marg and I were on our honeymoon in Vienna, and I was so impressed with all these statues of musicians of the past. “They were all in a park, and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to do something like this in the Yukon?’” The inspiration rested for decades, until an opportunity presented itself in 1992, when the RCMP were celebrating their centennial year. Hougen approached the RCMP and commissioned Chuck Buchanan to sculpt the first bust, Sam Steele, for display on the RCMP grounds.

Danny Macdonald is the editor of What’s Up Yukon. be more thankful to Rolf Hougen.” The bust honours Old Crow Gwich’in storyteller Edith Josie, who shared stories of everyday Gwich’in life in English, while retaining the stylings of her traditional language. Edith’s column in The Whitehorse Star, “Here are the News,” was syndicated and read around the world. The event was a special for residents Tammy noted. “My auntie Jane gave the opening and closing prayers,” she said. “My dad, William, said words of thank you and so much gratitude.” Tammy also said the connection with Old Crow extends to the sculpture artist himself. Harreson Tanner and his family lived in the community for a few years. Tammy said her family will travel to Whitehorse for the Main Street unveiling on Sept. 12. “We’re coming down for the day,” Tammy said. “Might bring some caribou.”

According to Hougen, the next was Angela Sidney, one of the last Tagish-speaking people. That bust was originally located in the old Whiskey Flats, before being repatriated to near Main Street with the more recent ones. Buchanan tragically passed away in 2013, having completed three busts. Hougen approached Harreson Tanner to take over the project for future installations and the rest is history. The subjects are selected by Hougen, from a criteria he has in the back of his mind, still there from the first kernel of his idea in 1955. “What I have from the outset, with the exception of the first one of the RCMP, I’ve looked for writers, musicians and artists,” he said. “These are the most prominent, who are nationally and internationally known.” Hougen notes there are others who have contributed enormously to the history of the territory with iconic books, or music, but he feels that those recognized for a bust need more than just one item. He’s recognizing artists with multiple contributions. Edith Josie’s bust is a special one, as it marks the first installed in Old Crow, which happened on Aug. 20. “When we did Edith Josie, we thought we should maybe do something in Old Crow (in addition to one on Main Street),” he said. “We asked the people of Old Crow if they’d be excited to recognize her that way.” There was definitely support for that.

6pm – Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind

Dir. M. Kehoe, J. Tosoni, 2019, Canada, 91 min. In Canada’s history, there are few people who signified the nation’s modern confidence in its arts more than Gordon Lightfoot. Sparing nothing about Lightfoot’s weaknesses and failures as well as his triumphs in a film that includes wonderful archival material and terrific performances. “While the film could easily indulge in baby boomer nostalgia, Lightfoot doesn’t let it. Now 80 years old, he’s gregarious and reflective.” ~ Richard Trapunski, Now Toronto

8pm – The Last Black Man in San Francisco Dir. J. Talbot, 2019, USA, 121 min. Jimmie Fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. A wistful odyssey populated by skaters, squatters, street preachers, playwrights, and other locals on the margins, this sweeping feature is a poignant meditation about hometowns and how they’re kept alive by the people who love them. “The Last Black Man in San Francisco is an indelibly beautiful story of love, family and loss in America from two childhood friends turned filmmakers.” ~ Manohla Dargis, NYT Tix: YAC Box Office + yukontickets.com YukonFilmSociety.com

Carey reminisces how a “chain” burger joint first made an appearance in Inuvik

I

arrived in Inuvik for the first time in early July 1972. What first struck me as I toured the town was A) the 24 hours of sunlight and B) how closed off the town felt without a highway. It felt like even more of a no man’s land when I looked at it from a corporate perspective. Caterpillar puts a strict limit on dealerships, allowing only one dealership per jurisdiction around the world. Puny little Inuvik had two. But the corporate anomaly that most piqued my interest as a 21-year-old was the burger chain that shall remain nameless. How did scrawny little Inuvik, with a population of 2,800, manage to get a chain restaurant? Over the next few years, working as a taxi driver, I delivered a ton of vittles out of that place. Then one day, around four years after I had come to town, I noticed there were no corporate signs or logos on the outside of the building. Inside, no signs of a burger chain existed. It was suddenly operating as a mom-and-pop shop. I wondered, every so often over the years, why they dumped the chain. I was positive it was a very profitable business. I had to wait almost 40 years to find out what actually happened.

If

One day in 1975 or 1976, corporate offices in Vancouver received a call from a woman with a complaint about the Inuvik restaurant. After she detailed her complaint, she was asked, “Would you give me the store location again, please?” “Inuvik,” she said.

How did scrawny little Inuvik, with a population of 2,800, manage to get a chain restaurant?

“Where?” “Inuvik, Northwest Territories.” There was a long pause. “We don’t have an Inuvik franchise,” said the representative. The woman went ballistic and informed him that they certainly did have a restaurant in Inuvik, she had eaten there a few times and she knew their products when she saw them. The woman sounded genuine, so the company took a chance and flew a representative to Inuvik. In Inuvik, the representative confirmed the woman’s story. Now the company had to deal with whoever was involved with the spurious business. In the 70s, there were only two ways to get to Inuvik. One was to fly from Edmonton on Pacific Western Airlines. The second was to fly from Whitehorse via Jet Air. This was the route used to supply the Inuvik business. The supplies were shipped to a legitimate franchise in Whitehorse, via truck, and then rerouted by air to Inuvik. To this day, I have never found out what the repercussions were in Whitehorse, but I hope it won’t take another 40 years to find out! Carey Marshall Is from Whitehorse and has lived on both sides of the mountain north of 60 for almost 50 years.
