he Yukon Historical and Museums Association (YHMA) wants Yukoners to learn more about the history in their own towns. As part of the national Culture Days weekend event, which takes place across the country from Sept. 27 to 29, the association will be hosting a do-it-yourself Heritage Highlights Scavenger Hunt. The event is the result of work by executive director Lianne Maitland and the association’s summer student, Elisha Ida. “(Culture Days) is to get you to be a tourist in your own town, get involved in culture in your own town,” Maitland said. “The scavenger hunt is designed to be done with other people, most people do it in a group. “The first step is to pick up a map at either the Donnenworth House (YHMA Office), or the Culture Days hub (Kwanlin Dün Culture Centre), or you can download on YHMA or Culture Days website.” Participants follow the map provided to sites of historical significance around town that will be numbered. Each numbered location will have a question that needs to be answered to complete the scavenger hunt task. According to the duo, the hunt isn’t intended to stump those who might not know a location, but to help them learn more about things they normally see. They did some of their own research to build on what they already knew of things. “We also do walking tours, so

It’s also one of the locations where you can acquire a map for the Heritage Highlights Scavenger Hunt PHOTO: Danny Macdonald it made sense to do the scavenger hunt because we have some of those details already,” Ida said. “We partnered with Yukon Historic Sites to do notes and details on different buildings they own. “I spent an afternoon biking around Whitehorse, looking at historic buildings I knew about. I was surprised to see how many with (interpretive) panels.” Those panels are one of several possible ways to find answers to the questions, as the YHMA will also be posting some signs at certain locations, or asking people to look at certain things. As well, there will be some bonus points for taking specific photos for an extra draw. Successful competitors in the event will be awarded prizes donated by sponsors. Some of the items provided include a gold

nugget from Murdoch’s Gem Shop, a smartphone printer from Angellina’s Toy Boutique, an LED lantern from Coast Mountain Sports and apparel from Yukon Built. To get their hands on the prizes, competitors will have to successfully answer the questions at each location and hand responses in to YHMA. For more information on the event, contact the YHMA at info. heritageyukon@gmail.com or by phone at 667-4704.

dventure therapy is designed to enhance the support work done in the health, mental health, education, justice and related human service fields. The 7th Canadian Adventure Therapy Symposium (CATS7) is an opportunity for over 100 delegates, including educators, traditional knowledgekeepers, therapists, professionals and students to gather. Together, they share best practices related to connecting people to the land as a means to heal oneself and community. The event is being co-hosted by the Boys and Girls Club Yukon (BGCY), Big Brothers Big Sisters Yukon, Youth of Today Society, BYTE, Skookum Jim Friendship Centre and the Kwanlin Dün Youth Advisory Council. Lindsay Cornell, executive director of Boys and Girls Club Yukon, was first approached to host the national event several years ago, but it wasn’t the right timing. (The inaugural event was a collaboration between Royal Roads University and the Boys and Girls Club Victoria, so the youth organization has history with the event.) “I got a phone call asking if we wanted to host,” Cornell said. “But I said it was too early. “When the call came again, I asked the other groups if they wanted to do it together. It’s about leading differently. Not because we have to, but because we want to.” The event will highlight some keynote speakers, including Mar-

Check-ups for stuffed noses (and arms, legs and bellies) The Yukon Hospital Foundation and Whitehorse General Hospital are hosting the third annual Teddy Bear Clinic on September 14 by Danny Macdonald

his year’s Teddy Bear Clinic will feature some new experiences for children and families. Karen Forward, Yukon Hospital Foundation president, said she and the staff at Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH) are looking forward to the event, which enables children to visit the hospital and have a positive experience. “Kids are much happier there than a regular checkup,” Forward said. “It’s a chance for kids to have fun in the hospital. “Parents talk about how much easier it is, when they come to the hospital, to get the kids out of the car.” Building those positive experiences and having fun is one of the main reasons hospital staff have embraced the event. Dr. Dave Storey, long-time WGH surgeon, has brought a scope down to the event for the last two years and provided “colonoscopies” to visiting stuffies. Ultrasound staff have brought smaller portable equipment to take part. A number of staff have participated multiple years in a row, so they are getting to know return patients well enough to greet them by name. Children and families are asked to bring a stuffie, essentially any doll, stuffie, or favourite friend, but the foundation will have a limited supply of extra stuffies to help those who didn’t bring along a “patient.” “Some of the favourite friends come back year after year and the doctors remember treating them,” said Forward. The new attraction this year is the simulation centre that the foundation has been raising funds to create. The actual simulation

centre space is finished and the interactive mannequins, a whole family, are all at WGH. The public will be provided with tours of the new space. The mannequins, which are programmable, will act as greeters. “The mannequins talk. They scream and all kinds of horrible things,” Forward said. “But for Saturday, they will be programmed to say, ‘Welcome to the Teddy Bear Clinic!’” As well, there will be an opportunity to help name the mannequin family. The event will also feature some partners like the Rendezvous Queen. Whitehorse firefighters may also put in an appearance, as the simulation centre is an integrated training tool for all medical and emergency services personnel to use. With the simulation centre complete, Forward noted there will be a new campaign launched soon, that will benefit from the next family-oriented fundraiser featuring LEGO blocks. Donors can purchase blocks to help build the project and they will be on sale during the clinic. The Teddy Bear Clinic takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14. For more information, find their event listing on Facebook.

Aussie Girl in B.C. with Kylie Campbell

Discover the Okanagan Part 1 of 3

The cuisine paired with wines was excellent

reathtaking views, delicious food and delectable wines. The Okanagan is the top wine destination in the world, according to the Huffington Post, and I had to find out if they were right. My boyfriend Ryan and I took a long weekend to fly down with Air North to Kelowna, where we rented a car to access the wide regions of wineries.

Day 1 - Naramata Bench Naramata Bench is the top spot for most who venture to the Okanagan valley, so we drove to Naramata Village and worked back down the main strip, with its winding roads and breathtaking views, hitting the numerous wineries. Our first stop was Therapy Vineyards, where we were welcomed by a cut-out of Dr. Freud overlooking stretches of vineyards. The introduction to Canadian wine-tasting was a little bit different from my usual practices around the world. Here in Canada, unlike my previous experiences, the wineries ask for a tasting fee. They range $5 to $8 per tasting, with each tasting offering about five small sips of different wines. If you end up purchasing a bottle, the tasting fee is subtracted from the bottle price. But if this is how North American wineries work we tried it. We bought a bottle of red, took some photos with Dr. Freud and drove to the next winery. Elephant Island winery has a de-

75 OFF

lightful location. Their wines were definitely different. They had both regular wines from grapes, but also fruit wines. I had never tried a fruit wine before and was pleasantly surprised. Most of their fruit was locally grown in their orchard that we had parked in. We bought another bottle and slowly started to wonder how we would get all the wine back to the Yukon, considering we only had three days in B.C. to drink it. However, our grumbling bellies distracted us and the winery advised us a good feed could be located up the hill at the Legend Distillery. There, we ordered lunch and a flight of tasting liquors. I knew immediately what I wanted, but was somehow convinced to get shots … three of them. I was already quite tipsy, it was a warm but breezy day and I wondered how I was going to stay awake, but I persevered, drinking plenty of water and not thinking about my bank balance. After a tasty lunch, we went to Lake Breeze Winery. It was extremely busy, with lots of tour buses. Inside the

EVERYTHING

tasting room, there was nowhere to taste. We weren’t in any rush, so we lingered until someone noticed us. Eventually they did and I started the tasting session. The wines were quite nice, very commercial but tasty. Eventually the room cleared and we were the only ones in there and the servers forgot about us. We were thinking about buying a bottle, but decided not to as we were now standing in an empty room just trying to pay for our tasting. The experience was underwhelming, so we decided on one more winery, MOCOJO, because I liked its name. It was a cute little winery and their tasting room felt like being home. That’s because we were in someone’s home. The owner and winemaker was there to greet and talk with us about his wine and his family. The name comes from the names of his children, who grew up on the vineyard. The wines were delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the wines and telling him about the Yukon, a place he hopes to visit.

Reinvigorated, we carried on. My designated driver took us to Bench 1775. The wines were quite delicious, but unfortunately there was a rowdy wine tour there at the same time. Here, I was lucky enough to try my first ice wine. This is a risky wine for a grower, considering the various temperature requirements, as well as the availability of a labour force able to pick the whole crop within a few hours. Ontario produces 75 per cent of the world’s ice wine. It is a very sweet dessert wine, but the price tag from the fruits of the labour is quite high. We queried Bench 1775 staff about wineries that may do tours about the process of winemaking. They suggested La Frenz and off we went. We entered the quaint tasting room and I splurged and enjoyed the more expensive reserve collection tasting. By this point we had four bottles and a box that we would figure out later would come back to Whitehorse. La Frenz told us it’s difficult to get tours last minute, many things book out for months. So perhaps

we could try other places or the larger ones. The wines were delicious, but it was time to go get dinner. Remembering we were in a large cosmopolitan city, we decided to splurge and find the highest recommended steak restaurant. RaudZ Regional Table popped up and we went downtown Kelowna to see if we could simply show up and eat. Luckily we got a spot at the bar and ordered a steak and a spring ravioli with a bottle of wine, which I mostly consumed, being that I was the designated drinker. The food was delicious. The last time I had a meal this good was when I was living in France. It was so sad to finish, but I thought I might explode from the meal, so we walked along the marina and park to get some exercise and sunset before heading back to the hotel to sleep it off, wake up and do it all over again the next day. 6pm – Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind

Dir. M. Kehoe, J. Tosoni, 2019, Canada, 91 min. In Canada’s history, there are few people who signified the nation’s modern confidence in its arts more than Gordon Lightfoot. Sparing nothing about Lightfoot’s weaknesses and failures as well as his triumphs in a film that includes wonderful archival material and terrific performances. “While the film could easily indulge in baby boomer nostalgia, Lightfoot doesn’t let it. Now 80 years old, he’s gregarious and reflective.” ~ Richard Trapunski, Now Toronto

8pm – The Last Black Man in San Francisco Dir. J. Talbot, 2019, USA, 121 min. Jimmie Fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. A wistful odyssey populated by skaters, squatters, street preachers, playwrights, and other locals on the margins, this sweeping feature is a poignant meditation about hometowns and how they’re kept alive by the people who love them. “The Last Black Man in San Francisco is an indelibly beautiful story of love, family and loss in America from two childhood friends turned filmmakers.” ~ Manohla Dargis, NYT Tix: YAC Box Office + yukontickets.com YukonFilmSociety.com

Richard’s Tire Tips Storing your out of season tires properly

Wellness LISTINGS

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

No more lifting, loading, lugging required Ask us about our Tire Storage Service!

Richard’s Tire Tips Storing your out of season tires properly

Sid’s Treasures with Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé

A trip to town

I

t’s morning in Beaver Creek and fog has rolled in. Sid and I are packed and ready to head to Whitehorse. We meet outside the Visitor Information Centre. A crisp breeze hits the nape of our necks and we know winter is on its way. “Are you ready?” Sid greets me, eager to hit the road. We’re taking his 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria to Whitehorse. Once the bags are loaded, we say a quick goodbye to folks and head out on the open road. I ask Sid, as we are leaving Beaver Creek, where he found the new car. “I got it from Dave James in Alaska. I’ve known him for years. We used to take you to his store when you were little and you played with his daughter.”

I remember the space, the building located at the top of a hill with an old truck marking the entrance. “They sell scarves and blankets there for potlatches. He’s selling most of his cars and I got the Victoria. He’s had it since the ‘70s when he drove it up from California.” The roadtrip in the Victoria is an adventure of its own. We swerve to avoid the potholes that infamously dot the Alaska Highway and we sputter to a halt as the vehicle tries to spit out bad gas. Other than that, the stretch of highway from Beaver Creek to Whitehorse is one of the most spectacular views in the world and we are able to enjoy such beauty in a comparable ride.

We’re heading to town because Sid needs some groceries. Little does he know, the family has a surprise for him. Over the course of a year, Sid’s youngest daughter Janet was in conversation with legendary Yukon artist Jim Robb for a commission of Bordertown Garage and Museum. Jim had visited Beaver Creek nearly seven years ago for Sid’s 75th birthday. He knew the site well and admired Sid’s ability to construct a space that looks very much like the olden days.

He enthusiastically accepted the commission and had created a beautiful watercolour rendition of Sid’s treasure. When we arrive in Whitehorse, we surprise Sid with the painting. For the first time in a long time, Sid is speechless! “Oh my God, it’s awesome. It looks just the same– Jim Robb-style. It’s amazing.” The next day we meet Jim at the Gold Pan Saloon. Jim, known for his exaggerated depictions of oldtimey buildings, is waiting for us. “I used the photos that were taken, especially the panoramas,” Jim explains his process to us. “My favourite part was painting the wood here.” He points at the wooden tiled roof of Sid’s Mu-

Sid with artist Jim Robb and his painting of Bordertown Garage and Museum seum. “This is exactly what I like to paint. I really enjoyed it.” With a new vintage ride and a Jim Robb original, Sid heads back to his home in Beaver Creek and cannot wait to prominently display his painting next year for guests to enjoy. Sid van der Meer has collected treasures all his life and this passion has given Beaver Creek’s its very own museum. Here Sid recounts stories to his granddaughter, Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé.

A Terry Fox story - how a Canadian hero was a common thread in my life

The Terry Fox Run is happening in Whitehorse on September 15 by Jennifer Moorlag

I

remember it like it was yesterday–sweaty palms, standing in front of a huge crowd (that was likely only about 50 people) at the Unicity Mall in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I was 10, in grade four, and I had entered a speech contest through my elementary school. The topic of our speeches? Inspirational Canadians. I had chosen Terry Fox. I remember writing that speech out on recipe cards and practicing by reading it to the family dog in the backyard. He had no useful feedback, but served as a very supportive audience. I remember it like it was yesterday–heart pounding with a big grin on my face. I was 15, in grade nine, and our school band trip had taken us to Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The community of runners warming up in 2015

I was stepping off the bus at the site of the Terry Fox Memorial. I had wanted to see that statue for what seemed like a lifetime. It was perfect. Just as I had imagined–surrounded by my friends in reverent silence in the shadow of a man who had been not too much older that we were when he made his mark on the hearts of Canadians. I remember it like it was yesterday–listening to a public service announcement on the radio and feeling my heart tug. It was the first week of September in Whitehorse and there was no one to organize the local Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research. I memorized the number to phone and pulled my car over to call it. Next thing I knew, I was one of a team of two organizing a run that would take place in two weeks. It was wonderfully chaotic. We pulled in help from family, friends and this

amazing community. Businesses and organizations stepped up to provide food, sound systems, tents and whatever else we needed! That year we had 75 participants and raised $3,000. That was 12 years ago. This year, I am once again co-organizing the Terry Fox Run. In the 34 years it has taken place in Whitehorse, the community has raised almost $178,000 for cancer research. Next year, in September of 2020, it will be the 40th anniversary of the first Canadian Terry Fox Run. The run now happens in 25 countries around the world. Through it, school children who didn’t get to watch news coverage all those years ago still learn about one of our Canadian heroes. This year’s run is on Sept. 15. Registration starts at noon at Rotary Park. The run starts at 1:00pm and loops around the Millennium Trail. For more information, visit the Whitehorse Terry Fox Run Facebook page. Join us and share your Terry Fox story, or get involved. With a full heart, I am stepping down after this year, so Whitehorse needs a run coordinator or coordination team for the 2020 run. For information or to volunteer, call the B.C./Yukon Terry Fox Run office at 604-4642666. Is it your time to become a part of Terry’s legacy? Jennifer Moorlag is an active community member and long-time Yukoner who has organized the Terry Fox Run in Whitehorse since 2007.
