ith the emergence of streaming services, social media and new technology redefining challenges in the musical industry, how does an emerging musician advance their career past the local scene and into touring stardom? That’s the question that BreakOut West (BOW) seeks to solve for emerging Western Canadian artists at the annual festival, according to festival executive director Nat Kleinschmit. This year is also an opportune time for the festival to return to the Yukon for the first time since 2011, because themes this year reflect Yukon values. “The most important thing for me is to recognize that artists are moving forward in one of the most challenging times,” she said in an interview. “We built the whole event on two values, I think Yukon

values. “Being fearless and taking those opportunities, that Yukon can-do attitude. And being friendly.” That sentiment provides the basis for BOW’s selection process for the 68 musical acts, including 12 Yukon artists, who will be showcased at this year’s event. Over 500 artists applied this year alone, and the festival seeks out artists who in a spot, career-wise, to reap the maximum benefits from BOW. “We figure our role is helping (Western Canadian musicians) break out of their home province,” said Liam Prost, creative content coordinator. “We look for artists that are better than just a local band, but not the international touring phenomenon, yet.” The mix is multi-genre. Acts across the musical spectrum will be featured, including roots, country, rap, hip-hop, rock and synth. As well, the event will feature separate children’s and jazz showcases. to equally represent each genre and province or territory, as well as female-led bands and Indigenous artists. “We have to make sure we’re not just curating ‘the coolest,’” Prost said. “We are trying to curate the artists who are at a specific spot in their careers. We make sure you’re in the right place and best positioned to take advantage.” “Taking advantage” is being scouted or identified by professionals in the music industry for a variety of different opportunities. Kleinschmit notes there are delegates coming who are coming specifically to see who they want

Major Funk and the Employment will bring their funky dance music that Yukoners know to BreakOut West this October to work with. Artists are coming to scout talent for their next albums and tours. It can sometimes be a challenge to balance that industry focus with the desire to put on a show for the public, but it works. “How we curate the festival to maintain balance, it’s a scouting festival,” she said. “There is a discovery component, the ‘stumble upon’ effect.” The festival is owned by the music industry associations (MIAs) in Western Canada. Music Yukon is our local agency, but that doesn’t mean Music Yukon drives the content at the festival. In fact, BOW often drives the direction of

talent for Western Canada. “The artists don’t flow through the MIAs to us, they flow through us to the MIAs,” Kleinschmit said. “One of our mandates is to build and develop that local capacity. One of the reasons we move it, it would be easier to stay in one place, but when the when the conference comes, it’s a catalyst for the local music scene.” To that end, 12 Yukon artists will appear at this year’s festival. There is also a mentorship with the Association franco-yukonnaise for emerging francophone bands, a number of Indigenous acts and some local Yukon musicians ready to tour. BOW also provides an opportunity for local tech and sound staff to use their talents and get scouted by larger production companies. “We have a great selection, a strong selection of Yukon artists,” Prost said. As part of funding arrangements, BOW will also host two bands on a community tour to five Yukon communities the week before the festival happens. Kleinschmit was “blown away” by the commitment to bringing the BOW experience to multiple communities in the territory. While the conference schedule is full, there will be a few international components according to Prost. There will be some discoveries and learning opportunities on Germany and Latin America. (Latin America is the fastest growing music market, Prost notes.) Delegates will learn how to engage with those jurisdictions. The festival promises to be an opportunity for Yukoners to catch the up-and-coming talent from across Western Canada, while also providing a doorway for our local

Grey Matters with Lillian Nakamura Maguire

Moving toward age-friendly communities

ace it–the baby boomers are aging. Are Whitehorse and other Yukon communities ready for the growing aging population? Oct. 1 is the International Day of Older Persons, the theme of which is ”The Journey to Age Equality.” This theme reflects the need to support and promote the active participation of older persons in the social, economic and political life of the community.

Lillian suggests making sure that businesses keep clearly marked handicap parking Are there ways that we can better utilize the wisdom and experience of elders and older adults? Can we look at how our communities can be older adult-friendly? Multiple levels of government (and organizations, including

PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE SEASON

Yukon College) have asked for input from the community about how they can better serve the health, social service and educational needs of the community. All of these initiatives provide an ideal opportunity to consider what it takes to be an age-friendly community. According to a 2019 report from the Federal/Territorial/Provincial Forum of Ministers Responsible for Seniors, an age-friendly community is one that “supports the health, participation and security of all, regardless of age, including features such as the availability of different housing options and transportation options, neighbourhood walkability, access to services for older residents, safety and opportunities to engage in social and civic activities.” As a 71-year-old, I’m fortunate to be in relatively good health, with an active mind and resources to allow me to participate in community activities and to live comfortably in our own rural home with my husband. But I’m also very aware that circumstances can change quickly with declining health or other issues. As I consider the future, I envision a community where business, community organizations, educational institutions, churches and all governments consider the situation of older adults and the ways in which they can provide age-friendly services, programs and activities. Many of these are already being done and require no financial costs to organizations or businesses. Some will require

longer-term planning and financial resources. Here are some of the things I’d like to see:

Accessible and Safe Facilities Outdoors:

ISidewalks

and steps free of ice, snow, wet leaves around your facility/business, snow piled to avoid blocking wheelchairs or those getting out of cars. When I’m walking, I find that my balance and stability is not as good as it once was, so I’m very nervous on snow or ice, even when I’m wearing my spikey boot grips. IClean, accessible public toilets available. Portland, Oregon has specially designed outdoor toilets in the downtown core. IEntrances free of obstructions. Sometimes I don’t notice sandwich board signs near entrances and have almost tripped over them. ISnow shelters available to support pedestrians or those waiting for buses. IBus stops need to be located at places frequently visited by older adults, including Whistle Bend Place or Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre/Public Library.

Indoors:

Seniors can get fatigued if they stand in line too long, so having chairs available can help times too dim to comfortably find my way or read the menu. IChairs available near entrances and places people may need to rest if they are unable to stand for long. This includes banks, store lineups and at staircases ISturdy handrails available on stairways. Kudos to Yukon Arts Centre for installing handrails in the centre of aisles

by Doug Sack

onsidering the Caribou RV Park at km 1403 of the Alaska Highway was established in 1974 and your humble correspondent lived in Atlin from 1977 to 1984, I must have driven right by it hundreds of times over the years without giving it a look or even a thought. I knew it was built by and for Germans, but that was the extent of my knowledge until a couple years ago. While researching and writing a series on “Yukon RV Hotspots” for this publication, I stopped by to check it out. I wasn’t impressed enough then to want to write about it. I am now. Fast forward to the last week of August 2019, just before Labour Day long weekend. Grandpa and #1 grandson, 12, were heading south with a travel trailer for a four-day/three-night “End of Sum-

mer” camping trip around the Southern Lakes loop in a clockwise direction. The first destinations were Snafu and Tarfu on a dark and stormy night when Lady Luck played her second card in a mini monsoon: The portable Champion generator decided to take this trip off when we were making camp at the Marsh Lake campground. No electricity meant no tunes, no fridge, no fun and only two choices to save the first night of our brief journey around the popular local loop—either keep going to Six Mile River Resort in Tagish, or retreat back to little Germany at Caribou RV, the only nearby places to get plugged in. My co-pilot voted for the latter and I agreed since it looked like we were in for a rough camping trip and it’s better to suffer bad luck closer to Whitehorse than farther away. Earlier that

morning, it took us six hours just to get out of Whitehorse because two wheel bearings on the trailer had to be replaced. If it’s true bad things come in threes, we had already used up two without finding a warm place to sleep and a dry place to uh … sit and think. Were Caribou RV and the Wolf’s Den going to be the third to complete this hat trick of forgettable camping? Hardly. From the first jolt of electricity, which activated the jukebox and filled our little R-pod with 100-year old banjo music from the Patuxent Project, the attitudes of both young and old improved dramatically and we began our Caribou and Wolf transformation by breaking into rockabilly dance steps confirming, irrefutably, that banjo boogeying is, indeed, hereditary. Let the Bluegrass hootenanny begin! By the

time we checked out three nights later, grandson #1 was proclaiming Caribou RV and the Wolf’s Den restaurant the best camping/gastronomic experience of his life and his grandfather concurred. The new owners of the Caribou RV Park, Steve Berger-Husson and Sandra Jost, of Luxembourg, have combined with longtime Wolves, Harry and Yvonne Ochsner, of Switzerland. Together, they bring the delightful feel of Central European hospitality to the outskirts of rural Whitehorse. They are two distinct businesses with owners from two different countries, but only 222 steps separate them from each other. This season was the 17th for the wolves and the fifth with a “for sale” sign, but that might change in the future because newcomers Steve and Sandra have loads of energy, exuberance and ideas. “We took over the campground in April this year, but the purchase process took nearly one year and a half,” Steve said. “We did this year what we had to, but not all what we wanted to. “Our plans for 2020 are improvement, improvement and improvement, bring more colours and flowers and improve through the lessons learned in our first season. The guest’s joy, fun, and comfort is our main target.” They also realized the previous owners weren’t keeping up with the times as RV’s keep getting bigger and longer, so they are designing some new larger sites to hold them. Luxembourg and Switzerland are two of Europe’s best gemstones. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the world’s last official dukedom, began as an impregnable old Roman fort on Bock Rock in 963 and means “Little Castle.” Its history is a fascinating one too complex to summarize here, but it is still vitally important to modern Europe as the site of the highest court of the European Union, and one of the principal founders of the EU. Switzerland’s story is far better known in the west and is very similar to Luxembourg’s. Switzerland is primarily a federation of

26 cantons (counties) from Germany, France and Italy, while Luxembourg is bordered by France, Germany and Belgium. The menu in the Wolf’s Den reflects this, as they have four types of spaghetti from Italy, several Schnitzels from Germany, Cordon Bleu and sauces from France, and the star entree which is Swiss and called “The Tartar’s Hat.” This grandson, who is currently debating whether he wants to become a diesel mechanic, a gourmet chef, or both, was fascinated by the European menu and wanted to try everything. Grandpa felt like he was back in Europe writing ski racing stories in the Alps and dining like a duke in the edelweiss und alpenglow. Considering we were on a rainy route to desolate places called Snafu and Tarfu, it was quite an adjustment to find ourselves suddenly dining in exotic Swiss excellence. We became willing captives of the Wolf people in Caribou country. In fact, for next year’s “end of summer” excursion, we’re going to leave the marshmallows, popcorn, hamburgers, hotdogs, smokies and bratwursts in town and call it the “Loop du Cuisine,” with stops at Wolf’s Den, Six Mile River, Carcross for The Bistro and refurbished Caribou Hotel, and a last stop at the Cutoff Cafe for a taste of halibut on the drive home. You may assume our run of early bad luck in late August exploded into good luck when we were forced to stay at Caribou RV and dine with the wolves. We will be regular customers of Sandra, Steve, Harry and Yvette from now on and feel apologetic for taking so long to find this unexpected oasis on the Alcan. We wish them all bon chance, guten tag, buon appetit und muchos dinero in 2020!

Doug Sack, 71, is the former sports editor of the Yukon News and the Whistler Question and longtime columnist for Ski Canada magazine. Before that, he was young.

Traditional Stories with Mauretia Holloway & Copper Joe Jack

BEAR WORDS

The Copper River in Alaska is a major landmark in the area of these traditional stories PHOTO : Christoph Strässler on Foter.com / CC BY-SAk

A

s I continue my conversations with Joe Copper Jack, I begin to understand that it is not just about the content, or events of the story, but what the story teaches. Traditional stories are the way to learn from the past. When we hear them repeat-

edly, we can sink into the story. Here, we can slow down, look back and examine, not only what happened, but what that means. We get a deeper understanding when we examine the actions of the long-ago people, the way they walked on this land, how they re-

lated all land dwellers and how that world related back. Respond instead of react. To do that, we need to sit and take time, listen and learn, take it slow. Joe Jack begins his next story with the following words. “So, for myself now, in 2019, the

incident with Taicho and the grizzly bear and I would suspect it happened around 1988/9 near North Fork Island, which is in Alaska. From what I see, there was a lesson for Taicho that was going to pass down to his family. His spirit guides, or doctor, sent that bear

to confront him and he had to use his wits, his understanding and his knowledge of bears, to know what to do in that kind of a situation. I presume that through old time stories that people told him, and cont’d on page 15 ...

the passing down of stories, that he knew the only vulnerable part of a grizzly bear is his nose. If you look at a bear skull, you will see that the bone around the nose is very thin and shallow, as opposed to other parts of the body. That the most vulnerable part of a bear, and if you hit it hard enough, the shock waves would move up to his brain. So Taicho knew that, as he prepared himself for that confrontation. He put his back up against the trunk of the tree, he pulled his legs in crossed position, with his heels as close as he could get to his butt, and he waited for the bear. And when the bear had to swoop down to get under the branches to get at him, the bear would then expose only his face to grab Taicho, and this is where Taicho was waiting with his gun. He used the stock of his gun in order to jab as hard as he could at the bear’s nose. He purposely put his back against the trunk to get

75 OFF

more strength from it. Because the trunk of the tree was his reinforcement, that to use all his power pushing forward, he would automatically push his body backwards into the trunk of the tree, that was there to brace him so he could get the most power out of each throw. Taicho set it up, to make the trap perfect regarding the bear. He had spent a lot of time on the land, so he knew what to do to the best of his knowledge. And then, from fright, when he saw that bear lying there, he crawled around it and got going, but then it was him and his stubbornness that got him to say ‘No, I’m not going to run. This is my place, too.’ And then he stopped and when he spoke to the grizzly bear and said, ‘Hey brother, you should not be bothering me, I am not bothering you, and now you are trying to kill me. I could kill you with my knife but I didn’t. I gave you your life, so just leave

EVERYTHING

me alone, go away and do not bother me.’ The bear then staggered a bit and looked at Taicho, and turned around and walked away slowly. If we look the words, he was telling and asking at the same time, because he said, ‘I’m not going you harm you, so don’t bother me no more’ and that was the connection with the bear. Then the bear did not bother him. For Taicho, too, he knew exactly what to do, as what he did came from his understanding of bears, which was common knowledge back then. The most sensitive part of a bear is the nose. So, when he told the bear that, he was given this power to have that respect from bears, especially grizzly bears. So that part is understandable because First Nation people, tens of thousands of years ago, were always taught that whoever are dwellers on the land like they are, whether it is the four-legged, the

winged, the finned, the ‘scalies’ and crawlies, these are all your brothers and sisters. So, in that way, Taicho spoke truthfully. ‘You are supposed to be my brother.’ Because of his teachings passed down to him, he would not take his brother’s life. Even though Taicho was well-known and wellfeared to be a fierce warrior, yet he did not just kill, but rather what he did was give that grizzly bear his life. So a connection happened then, and that respect then was passed down. Even that young boy that was sitting there hugging that river bank, with his little axe, and when he told that story said, ‘If that grizzly bear got my dad, I would have gone after him with this’ and he held out the little axe, across his chest, indicating that he was going to fight that grizzly bear with that little axe. And when he would end his story, he would always say that, and he

(Copper Joe) was known to be a powerful medicine man throughout his whole life. I feel that the story of Taicho and the grizzly bear has many meanings. The significance to me now, is that the stories I have heard of Taicho’s sons all have in them what we call ‘bear words.’ Bear words are very specific sentences and wording that is said to bears so that they do not bother you, do not harm you, that they do not bring any danger to your life on the land. I strongly feel that when Taicho gave that grizzly bear his life, when he knocked out the grizzly bear with the stock of his gun, and did not cut the bear’s throat, he was telling and asking at the same time, ‘I’m not going to harm you, so don’t bother me no more.’”

Bear words ... cont’d from page 15 Joe Jack shares some information about his Great Grandfather Taicho as told to him by his father, Billy Jack.

Where the stories started

“I

n 1885, Taicho came over from Alaska to Canada, on what is called the Copper Grease Trail. He came over with one wife, who was Chilkat Tlingit from Klukwan, Alaska, one daughter and six boys. He left behind two wives and 13 kids.” Joe Jack’s only comment, with a smile, was, “Taicho was a good family man” “Because he had kids over there and kids on this side, he would go over back and forth. The reason given for why Taicho came to Canada was because he had killed a Russian. “That’s the story my dad told me as he started his stories because that is as much as Dad learnt from his father, Copper Jack,” said Joe. The Copper family figured Taicho died around 1909. Because Joe Jack’s father was born in 1916, he did not know his grandpa Taicho. Joe continued. “When he came over to the White River country, via the Copper Grease Trail, he passed over the headwaters of the Copper River, and then came down the upper headwaters of White River. This particular path is one of the very few places where you can pass without being blocked off by glaciers. In the pass that they come through, they would walk right by the glacier as they went through the pass. When they came into the Canada side, they began to stay near the headwaters of the White River and would winter at Tchawsahmon Lake. Tchawsahmon is located about 10 air miles west of the present White River bridge. They would stay there because the fishing was good. In the summer time, they would go back up

this the Warrior village, because that is where you could get ‘warriors’ for hire. Mercenaries. They played a part in the slaughter of the people of Dezadeash Village, Yukon, but that’s a different story. The warriors would go over to the Yukon side, did their work, and then went back home.” Joe continued to clarify where his stories took place. “Where the White River comes down and meets the Yukon River, there is Coffee Creek. If we follow the White River down to where it hits the Yukon River, the Copper Grease trail follows the White River down to Coffee Creek. That is what is called now, but back then it had a different name.” There are a few more villages that will feature in Joe’s stories that are important. Near a lake now PHOTO: courtesy of Mauretia Holloway called Wellesley Lake, there used to be a village The story of Taicho on the north side. Also, there is yet another village just north and the bear has many of the Donjek, and this one was lessons to share called Copper City. Joe says he does not know why they called lems. When the first white geolo- it Copper City, but that is what gists came into the Copper River they called it. He suspects that region, they asked the people, the name came about because it ‘What do you call this river?’ was a Copper village, inhabited ‘Chitina,’ the people said. by Taicho’s family. Yet another ‘Ok,’ they said. ‘Then we will village is found where the Donjek call it Chitina River. meets the Nisling River, and that What they did not realise was was called Lynx City. n the old days, it was just carburetors. Now, 50 years later, everything has changed, according to Tina Woodland, owner of Whitehorse Motors. Cars are computerized, the dealership has moved locations and doubled in size, and there are 50 employees rather than the 30-something there used to be. “We even have electric charging stations and are getting ready for electric vehicles,” she said. To celebrate, Woodland said the dealership started working on plans for its anniversary almost two years ago. “It’s a big budget item so we had to kind of get ready for it,” said Woodland. “It” is a plan to donate $50,000 to local charities, non-profits and community initiatives in 2019. So far this year, Whitehorse Motors has donated $5,000 per month to recipients whose needs the dealership had been made aware of by staff, customers, organizations themselves and word on the street. This August, the recipient

was the Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) Youth Advisory Council. Woodland said the money was used to hold a Community Fun Day in Whitehorse’s McIntyre subdivision. There were games including baseball and hand games, live performers, activities for children and youth, and storytelling. “KDFN has had a lot of tragedies and losses recently and needed something to perk themselves up,” she said, adding that the day was well-attended. Over the course of the year, donations have also been made to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, Challenge Disability Resource Group, Blood Ties Four Directions, and food banks in Inuvik, including the Arctic Food Bank and the Inuvik Food Bank. Woodland said this was something the dealership wanted to do because it feels a connection to the community and wanted to give back. When the store opened up for Yukoner Appreciation Day, she said it really drove home to her the role Whitehorse Motors has played

for people in the years since 1969, when Rolf Hougen bought the dealership from the Northern Commercial Company. Northern had been operational in the Yukon since the 20s, even before the Yukon was connected by road like it is now with the Alaska Highway. “On Yukoner Appreciation Day, we saw people whose parents bought their first vehicle here and it’s generational. and now they’re coming in with their grandkids, or their son, or an auntie, or an uncle. “It’s really fun being able to realize that you’re part of something that’s been around for so long.” Whitehorse Motors will make a three more donations this year.

him from Montréal to the Yukon in 2016. At the Gold Pan, Brouillette is creating a “sustainable kitchen,” which offers local produce and farmed meats from Yukon farms and suppliers, as well as craft beer from Yukon Brewing and Winterlong. “The Gold Pan saloon is an institution in the Yukon,” he said. “We’re proud to have developed new menus in partnership and collaboration with local suppliers, farmers and crafters. Working together creates lots of good outcomes and makes a strong local economy in the community. “We’re part of a sustainable initiative where we compost or donate our organic waste and used oil to Flat Creek Farms for animal feed and for their research in developing new heating sources. Our actual waste has gone down dramatically. We are reprocessing whatever we can.” Brouillette sought out local farmers through Yukon Agriculture Society listings. “At first I kind of did it on my own. I was new in town, so I didn’t know who was out there. I started contacting farmers directly and it grew from there … I love working with this amazing fresh produce. It’s organic, so well-cared-for and grown. We have booming farmers in the Yukon right now, their products are high-quality.” Brouillette’s latest Gold Pan Saloon menu, released in early August, is packed with local ingredients from local suppliers like Little Red Hen’s Farm, Sarah’s Harvest, Yukon Gardens, Can Do farms, Flat Creek Farms, Horse Haven Ranch, The Deli, Naturally Northern Meats, Yukon Berry Farms, The Maple Rush, Uncle Berwyn’s Birch Syrup, Elemental Farms,
