he peoples of the circumpolar regions have been keeping warm with the help of snow for thousands of years. Even today, they still use snow structures for hunt camps and emergency situations. They are probably a bit more resilient than most of us but with a little knowhow and little or no tools, a snow shelter can save your life. Basic tools you should always have include a shovel, a tarp, a space blanket and survival kit with longburning candles. Building an igloo takes skill and a lot of time for a novice and, in an emergency, is likely beyond our capabilities. However snow blocks similar to ones for an igloo can be stacked as a wind-block or straight sided walls to support a tarp or around a snow trench. A snow trench is simple and the fastest protective structure. Just ﬁnd a spot where the snow is deeper and dig a trench a bit longer than your body. Make it as wide as you need to accommodate however many people there are. Any more than two or three people might require a separate trench. The trench should be kept narrow to retain any warmth. If

not alone, cuddling is strongly suggested. Make the entrance at a right angle to one of the ends to minimize cold air entry. Stretch your tarp across the opening of the trench. If the tarp is large enough, pull part of it down across the entrance. Place snow blocks or lumps around the tarp edges to hold it secure.

Digging a cave out of drifted snow works well and in this case your tarp and space blankets can be used to wrap around you. Again, have the entrance at right angles to the part you will occupy. Candles will give you light and heat. A quinzee is simply a snow cave in a snowpile you have created. Use your shovel to make a snowpile at least two metres high and two to three metres across. After the pile is complete, it needs to be allowed to consolidate (stiffen) and this will take one or two hours. This is your time to gather ﬁrewood for an outside ﬁre, and pine boughs or other vegetation

for the interior sleeping area. After the pile has stiffened up, use the shovel to start the entranceway and empty the interior. Twigs and sticks should be pushed into the pile to a depth of 12 inches, so when clearing the interior you can see when the roof is about 12 inches thick. Clear to the level of surrounding snow and then deeper in the centre. This keeps the sleeping areas higher than the low point which is where the cold air will gather. Spread pine boughs where you will sleep and cut and place a snow block at the door. If you are using candles or other heat source, create a vent hole at the high point of the roof to allow ventilation. It will amaze you how much warmer you are inside a snow structure compared to having no protection from the elements. Teslin students win national award

n April of this year, three classes from Khàtìnas.àxh Community School in Teslin won a national award. On April 10, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced that grades ﬁve, six and seven won the 2019 edition of Canada’s Coolest School Trip. To enter, classes from across Canada submitted a photo essay about a stewardship activity that they participated in—one which contributed to the protection of the local environment, or the presentation of local history and culture. The grade ﬁve, six and seven students submitted a photo essay about a website they built, which shares Tlingit culture and promotes the Tlingit language. Thanks to the contest, they won a trip to Manitoba. The trip to Manitoba allowed the students to do all kinds of fascinating things, including discover Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, and visit Riel House Historic Site and hear tales of Louis Riel’s life. They also checked out The Forks National Historic Site and camped out under the stars

the contest was something we wanted to do. The class decided to look at the local language since it is such a small portion of the community that ﬂuently speaks the language, and came up with a website in order to share the language with the world. “The website took around three months to make, working on it periodically during the school day and with dedicated time each week to ﬁnish it.” Teslin Tlingit is different from Tlingit found in other places around the world because the people of Teslin who speak Tlingit have different ways of pronouncing the words. Although the words might appear similar between the different dialects, the sounds they make, and the way the words are written make Teslin Tlingit unique among all other Tlingit languages spoken.

Students from the Khàtìnas. àxh Community School in Teslin built a website that shares Tlingit culture and language technology and Tlingit culture at the same time. “I originally taught all the students about website design and how they could make a webpage and information/links to the page. Then we decided as a class the different pages that would go into the website, Elder/prayers, word/ phrases, etc. The students could choose which part of the website they wanted to work on. Work was divided evenly by what the students wanted to focus their research/work on. “The students were very excited to work on the project and learn how to create a website. It took a long time, so sometimes their interest wavered at times,

but they loved doing the interviews and word recordings. They liked working with the local Elder in the school, Sam, to help with the translations. (Sam Johnston is a well know, and highly respected elder in the Teslin Community. He was the chief for Teslin Tlingit for many years and was also part of the Legislative Assembly. Sam was the ﬁrst aboriginal speaker of the Legislative Assembly.) They were most excited when the website was complete and they could see how fantastic it turned out. Sam was also very impressed with what the students accomplished. He personally came into the classroom to congratulate them after they found out they won the contest” The students’ website captures their interest and passion for their Tlingit culture in the following discussion on why they learn Tlingit in the school.” “Our Tlingit class is an important part of our school day. We come together as a class to learn about a Tlingit language and culture. Our class has highlighted one of our projects on our website, we are currently making button blankets. The button blankets show the traditions of our cultures, our families and who we are. We care about our cultures and Tlingit is the culture of many in our community, but we also use Tlingit traditions as a platform to express our own cultures. By showing the world that local cultural traditions can be adapted to incorporate your own family history, it makes everything more accessible to everyone!”

Day 3 - West Kelowna and Kelowna The last day involved experiencing the Okanagan bucket list’s top winery—Mission Hill. We booked half an hour in advance for the Mission Hill Sommelier Experience. This is a $30 guided tour of the vineyards, the unique and mesmerizing cellar and the distinct tasting room, where wines are paired with incredible food. Our guide was very informative. The winery has one of the most impressive setups we saw and the wines were amazing. . It was lunch time when we ﬁnished, so we decided to stay for lunch. From there, we moved on from reﬁned, meticulous, famous Mission Hill winery to The Hatch. The quirky, eclectic winery was certainly different, but also a great ﬁnd. Inside Yukon Inn Mall on Fourth (Beside Dollar Store)

The wines were tasty and what made the place even more unique was their playfulness of their bottles.

As described on their website, “on a direct level, ‘the hatch’ is a tasting emporium, an emporium the likes not seen before here in The Okanagan.” It shows in their tasting room, grounds and wines.

Their Screaming Frenzy Shiraz (2016) was a mockery of the famous wineries of Wolf Blass and Yellowtail and you will need to go to their website to see the description and labelling. After visiting two distinct wineries in West Kelowna, we decided to head to the other side and into Kelowna itself. The ﬁrst stop was Meadow Vista

Portions of local meats, cheeses and chutneys were generous Honey Wines, a beautiful small place. I had never had mead or honey-based wine before and was pleasantly surprised. It was a tad sweet for my nature, but my favourite was the mead popsicle. It was delicious on a hot, sunny day as we walked around the grounds

to see the bees. Last stop was the House of Rose Winery, which was a great way to end the trip. We explored their vineyards with a self-guided tour and purchased the last of the 12 wines that would ﬁll our wine box. It was close to our ﬂight with Air North and we took our wine box and got a plane home to Whitehorse. Remembering the beautiful place that has been highly underrated in the world wine meccas of the world. I highly recommend a visit to the region and make sure to have some wine! alking past the library on a recent Friday evening, we passed a young woman pushing a stroller with a very young occupant. The baby was contentedly gnawing on one corner of a cloth version of Dorothy Kunhardt’s children’s classic, Pat the Bunny. (sometimes known as Sleepy Bunny.) Instant nostalgia. “That was one of my favourite books when I was a kid,” I told the proud mom. “I hope it gives your baby a real taste for reading.” As we walked on from that brief encounter, my wife impudently suggested I must have been thinking of my kids, since I was far too old to have read Pat the Bunny in my own childhood. I’m happy to report that herself was dead wrong this time, although she almost never makes a mistake. Kunhardt’s interactive “touch and feel” book was published in 1940, three full years before I graced the world with my presence. Yes, I did read it to (and with) my offspring in the 1960s and ’70s, but I distinctly remember it

was one of the tools my own mom deployed while she was passing on the priceless gift of literacy. Pat the Bunny has since gone on to sell more than 6,000,000 copies, making it one of the most-

And don’t ignore the Dean Whalley/Don Page delight called Lamont the Lonely Monster, ster which includes a character named Uriah the Heap. Hundreds of enticing new children’s books come out every year. Whatever your language or culture, your gift to the future is to provide wonder for kids to chew on in their strollers. A peek behind the curtain

Since the release of Beneath the Broadcast, word of the Yukon’s music scene has begun to spread across the rest of the country by Manus Hopkins

ast winter, nine bands entered the CBC Yukon basement. There, each completed a one-shot live music video. The clips were compiled into a 45-minute segment and released as Beneath the Broadcast at an April screening in Whitehorse. This is a very simplified summary of the Beneath the Broadcast video project though. Behind the scenes, it took weeks of meticulous planning to bring to life a film that would showcase the talents of Whitehorse’s musical community and offer a peek into the diverse artistic landscape that exists in the Yukon. Beneath the Broadcast was produced by Big Boat Records and Something Shows, in collaboration with Brendan Preston Productions. At the helm of the project were three of Whitehorse’s most creative: Jona Barr, Brendan Preston and Patrick Hamilton. “At the start it was basically just a buildup of a lot of conversations,” said Barr. “Dawson (Bealieu) and Patrick (Hamilton, Big Boat Records co-founders) came up to me with this idea to do a video night where we get a bunch onstage and have someone film it to get some live videos for the bands.” Barr then found himself talking to Dave White, host of CBC Yukon’s Airplay. He pitched White on the idea of using the radio studio’s basement as the venue. When Brendan Preston was brought on board, Preston suggested using one continuous shot for each band’s video. That’s how Beneath the Broadcast started to come together. For Preston, the CBC basement was a prime venue as far as space, lighting and atmosphere were concerned. “I think the audience really gets a sense of space and some different flavours of the room,” said Preston. “It was a good way to make a film that can be viewed at one time or cut up into individual clips.”

When working on the ﬁlming, Preston decided to experiment using different techniques for each band, creating juxtaposition and an ever-changing ambience throughout the nine-part video. He compared the bubbly, pink-lit aura of Paris Pick’s performance to the stark, minimalistic punk vibe of the Cryptozoologists’ clip, and the big open area in which Groan Boy plays to the cramped, claustrophobic space Calla Kinglit and her band squished into. Originally, the segment wasn’t going to feature as many bands as it ended up including, but according to Barr, as rumours about the project circulated, there was a lot of interest among Whitehorse musicians. Several prominent local groups came forward to express interest in being part of the project. In the end, the nine bands featured in Beneath the Broadcast were Soda Pony, The Sweeties, Groan Boy, The Sputnik Experiment, Paris Pick, Calla Kinglit, Cryptozoologists, Jona Barr and Local Boy. The videos were all ﬁlmed over the span of a few days, with the exception of Local Boy’s—that one was done a few months later when the producers decided a hip-hop performance would help showcase the diversity of the Yukon’s music scene. In addition to a public screening of the entire project, the nine video clips were released individually as well. Each premiered in a different online magazine. Some of the publications that covered Beneath the Broadcast include Exclaim!, Canadian Beats, and Some Party. Beneath the Broadcast has also seen some coverage on CBC Music. Barr thought online coverage by respected publications would help the featured artists get into more festivals and showcases, especially with BreakOut West 2019 taking place in Whitehorse this fall. “Lots of these bands would be applying to perform at BreakOut West, so having these videos would help with that,” he said. “There’s

a little bit of buzz about the Yukon now with BreakOut West coming up, and there’s a really cool DIY scene happening up here.” Of the groups who appeared in Beneath the Broadcast, Cryptozoologists, Local Boy and Paris Pick will be performing as part of this year’s BreakOut West showcases. Big Boat Records will also have representatives at the event to network with other industry professionals. With money raised from Beneath the Broadcast’s initial screening, the producers were able to hire a publicist to help the

project get more exposure. This is important to Barr, as the Yukon’s remoteness means many potential managers, agents and fans aren’t going to just stumble across the scene. “When I was younger, I found myself looking outwardly to other music scenes and wishing there was something like that in Whitehorse,” said Barr. “Now the scene is growing and changing with diverse styles and genres. I think there’s a lot of really cool stuff happening up here!” The individual clips from Beneath the Broadcast can all be found on

or 20 years, from 1994 to 2014, Al Pope produced a regular column for the Yukon News. It was called Nordicity. He said it started because he had written so many letters to the editor that Peter Lesniak, who held that position at the time, invited him to become a regular contributor. This origin story resonates with me, since much the same thing happened to me at the Whitehorse Star when Max Fraser was in charge back in 1977. To start off, Pope created an imaginary Yukon Community named One Bucket Creek and used it to spoof real life events in his area, as well as imaginary ones. He’s not the ﬁrst to take this route to satire. Stroller White did it many decades ago. I also recall a fellow named Henry Wilkinson, who used to write pieces that involved the Carcross Closet of Commerce. There are a number of One Bucket entries in this 20-year retrospective volume, but Pope admits that he just couldn’t keep up creating imaginary narratives over two decades. Besides, this had all started in the ﬁrst place because he kept writing letters to the editor. So, as he writes in the introduction to The Boreal Curmudgeon: Twenty Years of Nordicity, “the subject matter broadened to include national and international issues.”

cording to themes. There is a One Bucket Creek section, another on mushing, one on northern beasties, a section on science and another on the Royal Family. There are essays on Canadian culture, and a section on national scandals and cover-ups—enough to make you forget all about SNC Lavalin. The essays are enhanced by the addition of Heidi Marion’s 32 pen-and-ink illustrations, scattered throughout the book. Pope is critical of all the political leaders within the timeframe when he was writing the column, but you really don’t want to miss his takedown of Andrew Scheer, not when he was leader of the Conservatives (not to be confused with the Progressive Conservatives) , but when he was Speaker of the Legislature. It’s brutal. The Boreal Curmudgeon is not the sort of book to be read from cover to cover in a single sitting. After all, the columns were written one at a time, week by week, over many years. I found that one to three of them per day was a good dose. At that rate I was several months reading the entire collection of about 100 essays, but it was worth the time. Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Mike Mancini As Elsa moves towards an uncertain future, a former resident reflects on its past by Leighann Chalykoff

he Hamlet of Elsa—a collection of homes and industrial buildings nestled into the Silver Trail at kilometre 97—transformed from a booming mining town in the 1960s to a ghost town in the 1990s. Today, it faces an uncertain future. But to Mike Mancini, it was the ﬁrst home he knew as a child. It was where he rode his ﬁrst bike and learned to ice skate. “We really had a great time growing up there,” said Mancini. “There were a lot of kids around and it was like one big family. It was comfortable living and the mining company really tried to keep the families happy—there was a recreation hall, a movie theatre, a skating rink and a ski hill.” As is the story of many communities formed to service a mine site, Elsa’s prospects rose and fell with the price of minerals.

Its population swelled to 700 in the 1940s, drawing people from all over the world to work on the site. By 1953, United Keno Hill had become Canada’s second largest silver operation. Mancini was born in Southern Italy and was three years old when his parents moved to Canada and settled in Yukon, ﬁrst at a transfer station at No Cash, then Calumet, and then Elsa a few years later. Mancini was six. “What I remember the most is Christmas time—we would have plays at the rec hall and Santa Claus would come and bring us all toys,” he said. “And each year there was a Spring carnival that lasted a couple of days called the Mad Miners Muck Up.” The story of Elsa begins long before Mancini was born. The area was prospected as early as the 1880s, and large deposits of silver lead ore were discovered in the region in the 1910s. The name came in 1924, when Charlie Brefault, also known as the “Lucky Swede,” staked a claim on Galena Hill and named it for his sister, Elsa. It’s said he could pick up pieces of ore “like potatoes” from the claim. When Brefault’s luck ran out, Treadwell Yukon purchased the Elsa claim, and a community that took on its name grew around the entrance to the mine to support it and other mines in the area. Operations at Elsa expanded in the 1930s, when a mill was moved to the growing community to process ore. From the ‘30s to the ‘60s, tonnes of ore from the Silver Trail region was shipped to the south and the region became a mainstay of the Yukon’s economy. He came back each year to work a variety of jobs over the summers—in the mill, in the mechanical shop, carpentry shop and in the blacksmith shop. “If you were interested in any of the trades they would train you,” he said. “I saw working at the mine as a great way to make money, but when I was growing up I always wanted to leave Elsa and see the rest of the world.” And he did leave. After nearly a decade of low silver prices and steady losses, United Keno Hill shuttered its operations in 1989, and the once-booming community of Elsa emptied as workers moved elsewhere to ﬁnd jobs. “Families were raised there and when it shut down everyone was in shock,” said Mancini. “It was our home.” After the mine shut down, Mancini spent years in southern B.C., but was drawn back to the Yukon in the 1990s, when he inherited some cabins from a friend. He returned to live in Keno and start over. He helped open and run the Keno City Mining Museum, which

tells the stories of the people who mined in the Silver Trail region. “We really tried hard to keep the memories and the history alive in the area. It’s vital now more than ever to try and save as many buildings as possible,” he said. “I lost my parents when they were quite young, and the days growing up in Elsa were great memories for me—those were some of the best times of my life.” Today, Mancini owns two snack bars and divides his time between Keno and Mayo. On the way back and forth between the two places, he drives by the shuttered remains of Elsa.
