Weather Talk with Mike Gladish

Much ado about nothing

A closer look at what zero degrees means

Z

ero may be nothing in the world of math, but in weather the significance of this integer is amazing. October is a good time to start talking about zero, as we recently saw the results of a few days of below freezing weather in Whitehorse and the southern Yukon. I will be making much ado about nothing in terms of the daily mean, the monthly mean and the annual mean temperatures as they approach 0 C. Zero is very significant to all Yukoners, as it relates to growing food, preparing for outdoor activity, living with permafrost, frozen water pipes, slippery sidewalks, planning for the future and even today’s drive to work. As of Oct. 19 the average daily temperature in Whitehorse will be 0 C. The daily average will remain below zero for about six months, climbing back to zero on April 11. That is not a forecast. It is a statistic based on the last 30 years of temperature records for Whitehorse. The daily mean is calculated by adding the maximum and minimum for the day and dividing by two. Elsewhere in the Yukon, the daily mean of 0 C arrives earlier in the fall. Dawson City crossed the line on Oct. 4 and Old Crow on Sept. 25. Dawson City’s mean on Oct. 4 this year matched the longterm average and last year it was within one day. Dawsonites must have felt warm in the fall of 2017 as the mean remained above freezing until Oct. 11. In Old Crow this fall, the daily mean went below 0 C on Oct. 6, almost 10 days later than the average. This point illustrates that even though the daily mean of zero is consistently close to the average, there are variations from year to year that can’t be predicted. Since half of the year in Whitehorse is below 0 C and the other half is above 0, it is safe to say that our annual average is around 0. In fact, our annual mean temper-

ature is about -0.6. If you aren’t into number-crunching, it is easy enough to look out the window and notice that, in general, the small ponds in the Whitehorse area are freezing up after the middle of October and thawing by the end of April. Snowfalls after mid-October tend to stay because the ground is usually frozen by then. We can be quite certain that the daily mean of zero will arrive each October and will not leave until April. The annual average temperature for Whitehorse deserves a whole article, but I will try to cover it in a few paragraphs. The most recent data that I have available, shows that Whitehorse had an annual average temperature of -0.6 C between 1942 and 2008. The annual average is calculated by using the daily high and daily low for 365 days. There are a few interesting points to note for Whitehorse. The average difference between the annual mean and the 66-year mean was 0.2 degrees. (another 0!) The biggest difference was in 1972 when the annual average was -3.5, which was 2.9 degrees colder than the mean. In other words, 1972 was the coldest year since 1942 in terms of the annual mean temperature. The warmest years, on average, were 1944 and 1987 with means of 1.5 degrees. This is a mere 2.1 C warmer than the 66year mean. The amazing point regarding the annual mean is that we are so consistently close to zero with only a few degrees of variation. This may help to illustrate why small increments in the global average temperature are so significant and why people are concerned about the global climate warming by only 1.5 or 2 degrees. Changes of 1 or 2 degrees, when the annual mean temperature is zero or colder have an effect on permafrost. Most northerners know about permafrost and some are acutely aware of its signifi-

cance. Geologists define permafrost as any ground, including rock and soil, with a temperature that remains at or below the freezing point of water (0 C) for two or more years. Weather people probably agree with this definition. Most permafrost is located north of the 60th parallel, but at lower latitudes, alpine permafrost may occur in the high mountains. The annual mean temperature at Whitehorse being near zero is an exception, even for the Yukon. Most other southern locations average -2 to -4 C annually. The southern Yukon, especially Whitehorse, is affected by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, and its moderating storms that bring cloud cover and mild air on a regular basis. Permafrost in the southern Yukon is patchy. Dawson City is in a zone of discontinuous permafrost, and Old Crow sits on ground that is cont’d on page 3 ...

mains frozen below a certain depth. A 10-degree difference in the mean annual temperature between Whitehorse and Old Crow is the main factor determining the existence of permafrost. A one-

portant factor for building and road construction in the north and for arctic ecology. The melting of permafrost over time will have huge effects on these aspects of the life and landscape of Old Crow

and many other northern communities. Gardeners make much ado about zero when the daily mean minimum drops to freezing. The growing season depends on a frostfree period. This past summer, Whitehorse had at least 120 days between the last spring frost and the first fall frost. That is significantly higher than the average of about 90 days. Dawson’s average frost-free period is over a hundred days, but gardeners there worry about zero too. The higher elevation and lower humidity makes Whitehorse more susceptible to frost. Conversely, Dawson’s lower elevation and longer sunshine hours provides a longer frost-free period. It is incredible how much food can be grown in the short growing season, but there is always a risk that a below zero night will wipe out some, or all, of the crop. Over the last 75 years in Whitehorse, temperatures of 0 or colder have been recorded at least four times in July, and on all but 13 days in June and August. Climate warming of 1 to 3 degrees will probably have an effect on the average frost-free period, but it will not provide guarantees against frost in June and August. It’s not likely that corn and tomatoes will be grown in the Yukon, without a greenhouse. A one-degree difference in temperature on a very cold or very hot day, is not really noticeable. However, when the temperature is at or near 0 C, small changes of even one degree are noticeable. Drivers won’t have to scrape the windshield when the morning temperature is +1, but it will be necessary at -1, depending on other factors, such as humidity and wind. Skiers are very aware of the difference in waxing when the temperature

is -1 or +1 as the properties of snow change considerably within a couple of degrees of zero. Even walking and driving are impacted by this small change in temperature as it will affect ice formation on roads and sidewalks. Emergency hospital visits increase dramatically as a result of this small change. Small changes in the monthly mean temperatures are not usually noticeable and can vary widely year to year. We know that 5 or even 10 degrees of change for monthly means are common and they are much less predictable. We can have a hot May one year and a cool one the next. We can have two consecutive warmer than average months, but that does not mean that the following month will be warmer than average. This makes it difficult to determine trends in temperature over short time periods. The differences in monthly means may be most noticeable in October and November when there may or may not be snow on the ground. Very small changes in the annual mean temperature are significant on a global scale. They are more visible in areas where the mean annual temperature is close to 0 C. A change of 1 degree will affect permafrost and glacial melting. Less noticeable, but equally important, small changes in the mean annual temperature are related to a measurable rise in sea temperature. Thanks to the Celsius system for making zero so important to our weather story. There is nothing interesting about 32 degrees Fahrenheit! Mike Gladish is a keen weather observer who trained as a Meteorological Technician 35 years ago.

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

Living the life of a porcupine

L

iving the life of a conservation officer is truly a blessing. I doubt very much if any other occupation can bring you so close to the natural world. I have come across the most odd fish of all (the Gar Pike of the St. Lawrence River), the rare inland bird that is the Dovkey , and the Canadian porcupine. The latter is a creature completely different from just about any other species of wildlife in Canada. My first meeting with this creature was one I won’t forget, and not only because of the four quills it left in my ankle. I can’t think of any other wild animal that would not take off to

the woods when scared, or take off when scared. The domiciliary porcupine simply rolls itself into a small ball, or puts it head down and tail up. If you meet up with a porcupine and see this happen, keep well clear of it, as one brush from its tail will give you a lifelong encounter to remember. (I’m not talking fondly.) Basically the quills are controlled by inner muscles on the porcupine’s body. Normally the needles will lie flat on the back of the porcupine. Once frightened or encountered by another animal, the muscles tighten and the quills stand upright. I once saw a coyote attack a porcupine and within

PHOTO: Murray Martin  Murray captured this photo of a porcupine hanging around in a tree 

seconds the coyote jumped away with about 100 or more quills suck into its mouth, nose, eyes and neck. Three days later I found the coyote dead and took it into the lab for an autopsy. Due to the composition of each quill, the more

the coyote attempted to scratch away the quills, the further the quills moved into its body, striking vital organs and ultimately killing the coyote. One may wonder how a female porcupine can give birth to such a critter. Actually, while the unborn porcupine is still in the female, the quills are very soft. Only after the porcupine gives birth and the quills are dry, do they become sharp as a needle. Murray Martin is a former Ontario conservation officer and a longstanding member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.

Cured salmon roe

almon are out and about. This quick cure turns fresh salmon roe into a great snack or addition to a charcuterie plate. Once you cure the eggs they will

last about two weeks in the fridge, or six months in the freezer. If you’re sensitive to salt, taste the roe after 10 minutes and adjust accordingly. If you’d like them a bit more salty, try letting them soak for 25 minutes or half an hour. Makes 1 pound.

INGREDIENTS

❑ 3 cups of cold water ❑ ¼ cup kosher salt Salmon roe, rinsed and sack removed

❑ 1 pound fresh salmon roe (about 2 sacks from large fish), removed from roe sack and cleaned under warm running water

Telegraph Creek area

Volcanoes in the not too distant past

t this time last year, residents of Telegraph Creek and area were still displaced by forest fires that ravaged their land. Dozens of homes and buildings were destroyed and it was not until November that people started to return. Those fires started because of lighting, but in recent geological times fire reigned not from above, but below, in the form of extensive volcanic activity that affected the Tahltan people. The area around Telegraph

Creek is part of the northern cordillera volcanic province. This belt stretches from Stewart, B.C., in the south to the Alaska border near Dawson City. It first became active 20-million years ago. Basalt from these eruptions can be seen around Atlin, Miles Canyon, Fort Selkirk, and Sixty Mile River in the Yukon, but by far the largest and most spectacular were centered in the Stikine River area of British Columbia. To the north of Telegraph Creek is Level Mountain cover-

ing over 2,400 square kilometres in area. The mountain is what is known as a shield volcano, like Mauna Loa in Hawaii. It is a lowprofile, relatively gently sloping mountain made of a series of basalt lava flows totalling 1,000 metres thick. The volcano started erupting 15-million years ago and ended about 2.5-million years ago. Over 20 different eruption centres have been identified on the mountain. On a clear day, the best way to see Level Mountain is from

35,000 feet on the port side of the Air North flight to Vancouver. Look for it 25 to 30 minutes after takeoff. South of the Stikine River is the Mt. Edziza volcanic complex. Not as big in area as Level Mountain, but it not only had basalt lava flows, but also explosive eruptions of rock and ash, geysers, hot springs, eruptions under glaciers and sulphurous gas vents. The terrain is a series of rugged peaks, cinder cones, and lava flow plateaus. Activity at Mt. Edziza began about 11-million years ago. Recent eruptions include 1,300-year-old cinder cones. There is evidence of ash layers that may be only a few hundred years old. The volcanic activity is suspected to have been triggered by a change in the relative motion between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates. The two are in contact with each other about 100 kilometres west of Telegraph Creek. The colliding plates tore the crust, allowing magma to come to surface through the fractures. The region became a provincial park in 1972, but the first humans in the area arrived around 10,000 years ago. The Tahltan peoples

Many designs in jointed lava flows

established inland along the Stikine River and the Tlingit on the coast in the Wrangell area. Both groups utilized the rich salmon resource along the Stikine and its tributaries. Another valuable resource in the area was obsidian. Obsidian, also known as volcanic glass is a rock that is non-crystalline. That means it cooled so quickly the molten rock did not have time to crystallize, it just turned to glass. Obsidian is hard and brittle, with a fracture pattern known as conchoidal. These circular fractures form thin, sharp, hard surfaces ideal for cutting or making weapon tips. Most of the obsidian from the Edziza area is black to grey, but it can also be green, blue, red, brown, or even mottled. Vera Asp, Tahltan name Chaudaquock, in her 2004 Simon Fraser University Masters thesis describes the Tahltan as “leaders in the trade of obsidian.” Mt. Edziza obsidian has been found in Haida Gwaii, Yukon, Alaska, and as far east as Alberta. The best source is found 20 kilometres south of the main peak at Edziza, near Raspberry Pass. This pass is a major east-west trending route through the mountains and has been used for thousands of years. Edziza got its name from a Tahltan word Ah deeth Tha, meaning “ash and sand mountain.” Volcont’d on page 11...

Tahltan Village June 2018 before the fire canic activity in the area is in the oral histories of the Tahltan such as the need to move camps quickly due to eruptions. Salmon runs would have been altered by lava flows blocking streams and rivers. A 1984 Simon Fraser University Publication named “Glass and Ice” by K.R. Fladmark describes the archaeology of Mt. Edziza. It describes a Tahltan legend of giant supernatural toads that lived high in the mountains. One was named E’dista that lived part underground and part underwater. Its breath would come through cracks and holes in the rocks. It was also associated with spreading fire over water.

Lava flows from both Level Mountain and the Edziza area were quite extensive and often flowed downhill into existing river valleys. Some reached as far as the Stikine River. The area where the Stikine has cut through the recent lavas is known as the Grand Canyon of the Stikine. Over 16 kilometres long, the canyon has walls that can be vertical cliffs measuring over 400 metres high. The river can narrow to as little as 20 metres. The Stikine is known as one of the last great wilderness rivers in the world. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, BC Hydro had other designs on the river. They had plans for several dams. One proposed dam, known as Site Zed, would have been 270 metres or about 80 stories tall. The Grand Canyon

would have been completely flooded. The traditional way of life for area residents would have been altered forever. Their protests as well as poor economics at the time killed the project. Another interesting feature in the area involves rocks, though this one is human-made. There are a number of rock cairns that occur in the alpine areas adjacent to the Stikine River 50 kilometres downstream of Telegraph Creek, mainly around the Scud River. These cairns are one to two metres in diameter and height. Quite often there are three together in a line, possibly indicating direction. The age of these is hard to determine. Scientists have tried using estimates of lichen growth on the north side of these cairns. It has been speculated they may be related to where the Tahltan and Tlingit met to trade goods. If you have never been to Telegraph Creek, plan to on your next trip along the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. The geological features created by the volcanism in the area are spectacular and many are visible right along the road. It is about a 110-kilometre trip from Dease Lake. The road follows the ancient trail established by the Tahltan, which was upgraded to a

pack trail by the B.C. Government as early as 1874. It is a good road, but I would not take your new Ferrari or your Gus the Bus-sized RV down the road, as it can be quite narrow in places with sharp corners. Last summer’s fires will have had an effect on the road and hillsides nearby, so drive slowly and enjoy the views. The first half of the trip occurs on a low plateau of older volcanic and sedimentary rocks. About 60 kilometres in you can see Mt. Edziza in the distance to the southwest. At 75 kilometres you begin your descent into the Stikine Valley at the Tuya River. Look for the different basalt lava flows stacked on top of

each other along the valley sides. Some spots you can see flows on top of gravel from old river bottoms. Just downstream of Tahltan Village, right where the Stikine comes by, up high you can see an old river valley filled with radiating columnar joints The designs made by the cooled lava are amazing all around you, it is a magical place.

Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament begins another 40 years after celebrating the creators last winter T

he next 40 years of the Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament (DIVT) kicks off on Oct. 25 in Dawson City. The DIVT celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018 with a special mass assembly to honour the years of success and the two teachers who started the whole thing. Roberta Joseph, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Chief, thanked all the staff and volunteers, present and past, who have made this event possible every year. “Their ideas continue on today. This is a positive activity that we all get to share together.” “The DVIT has been the Yukon’s number one volleyball competition for 40 years,” said Wayne Potoroka, mayor of Dawson City. “And a big reason is the out-oftown players and coaches and guests who liven up our streets and our community for the next few days. “This tournament isn’t because the school needs it to happen. It’s because good people want it to happen.” From Whitehorse, Peter Grandmanis, long-time coach of the F.H. Collins Warriors, spoke next. “On behalf of the literally thousands of students and coaches that have come through this tournament– sometimes I see them in Tim Hortons, or restaurants and we reminisce and often their favourite memory is of coming to Dawson. They cherish those days that they spent in Dawson.” On behalf of all those people, he presented a plaque to the organizers of this year’s event. Destined for the trophy case in the hall, it read: “1979 to 2018: 40 Years. Thanks for the memories.” “Forty years ago, Peter Cassidy and Bob Sutherland came up

with this idea to allow rural kids to play competitive ball before they went to the championships in Whitehorse,” said Melissa Flynn, vice-principal at Robert Service School. Flynn graduated here in 1998 after playing all through her high school years. “Bob came up with the idea,” said Cassidy, who was teaching in Mayo at that time. “He had students who wanted to go play in the big city.” Cassidy joked that his students and Sutherland’s needed to learn which ball was the volleyball and how to set up the nets. Once persuaded to bring his players to Dawson, that was the beginning of the events. “We were always guaranteed coming to Dawson there would be two things: cold weather (I don’t know what’s happening this year), and awfully good volleyball.” He noted that it has become a generational thing and that it was fantastic to see people he had known as student players now leading their schools and coaching. Stephanie Cayen, another RSS grad and former player now on staff, noted that those early years had been just rural schools, but after Cassidy moved to Whitehorse, the city schools began to get involved. “Throughout the years, students from all over the Yukon have participated in and enjoyed DIVT,” she said. “And when we began planning the 40th anniversary celebrations, we heard many wonderful stories.” Quite a bit of this material can be viewed or read on the Facebook site: Dawson City RSS Volleyball DIVT 40th. Flynn called Cassidy and Sutherland to the front of the crowd to present them with some memorial gifts, including a 40th anniversary T-Shirt and an inscription on a memorial plaque to be installed in the gym. It reads “In appreciation, Bob Sutherland and Peter Cassidy. We wish to express our gratitude for creating the Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament in 1979, bringing Yukon students together to play competitive volleyball. Over the past decades, DIVT has become a highlight in every volleyball player’s year. Thank you for your dedication and advocacy for our communities.” The event concluded with a PowerPoint slide show of historical photographs and material and pep rally style performances by all the visiting schools. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Hello Everybody,

We invite you to share your photos of Yukon life.

Email your high-resolution images with a description of what’s going on to editor@WhatsUpYukon.com.

PHOTO: K. Porter

A friend and I (and our dogs) hiked up Mt. Lorne on September 1. It took us five hours to get from the highway parking area to Mt. Lorne’s false summit - a perfect place to have lunch. We then turned around and headed back down, avoiding the craggy, rocky ridge that leads to the true summit. The rocky ridge across the summit is not suitable for my elderly dog, I’m not sure it is suitable for me either, with lots of rock scrambling and the need to use your hands, as well as your feet to move onward and upward. Maybe next summer? At our highest point we had hiked up1129 metres, providing an invigorating workout and spectacular views!

all fun is getting underway at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, with more activities planned now than ever before. Winter hours serve guests seven days a week and Sunday Oct. 27 is the perfect opportunity to bring a friend or the family to check it out. That’s when the preserve is hosting its annual Wild Trick or Eat event. Everyone is encouraged to don their costumes for the day

and bring their own smokies, s’mores and other snacks for the bonfire, which takes place from noon until 3 p.m. Visitors are also invited to join in the fun at the wildy, tricky scavenger hunt where they can track clues all over the property to make their way to a treat. Optional bus tours will take place at noon and 2 p.m., with time allotted to stop at the bonfire, although general shuttles will not be provided. Instead guests can plan to take the beautiful 45-minute stroll from the front entrance to the carnivore corner. Stuffed pumpkins have been added to the menu for special carnivore feedings with the lynx at noon, arctic foxes at 1 p.m. and red foxes at 2 p.m. “We’ve got our pumpkins carved and stuffed with tantalizing bits of meat,” said Lindsay Caskenette,

Manager of Visitor Services. “This Halloween-themed feeding is a great source of enrichment for the animals because it stimulates their curiosity and provides new challenges.” Kids and grownups alike will not want to miss seeing these furry friends at their most playful as they chow down on their treats. Guests can also pick up some educational info from preserve staff, to find out to do with pumpkins at home after Halloween, and how they can be an attractant for wild ones around your own neighbourhood. Another added bonus this year is the opportunity to see Watson, the orphaned-moose-turned-local-celebrity, celebrate his first Halloween. He is thriving at the preserve, growing by the day and cont’d on page 19 ...

Candy for the carnivores ... cont’d still adorable! All the Halloween excitement will be followed up by educational programming later this fall. That programming will see hundreds of school-aged youth from across the territory visit the preserve. Students from grades two, seven and nine will take part in the fall school programs running through November and December. Information on these events and more, including how to support the preserve’s efforts in wildlife rehabilitation, can be found on the Yukon Wildlife Preserve Facebook page and the YukonWildlife.ca website. Regular admission applies to the Wild Trick or Eat event, with membership passes available for purchase at the front gates. Emily Hoefs is a soccer player, coach and enthusiast, as well as a writer. She lives in Whitehorse with her son and too many dogs.
