Wasting Away in Geezerville with Ken Bolton

In the right sauce, mine could be a corpus delicious N

ever, in any previous column, have I considered the need to provide a trigger warning. Regular visitors to Geezerville are generally mature, clear-minded and emotionally stable enough to put up with whatever nonsense I spill into this 450-word frame. Nevertheless, I recognize that certain subjects are sensitive for some folks. Should toilet tissue hang front or back? Are innies innately superior to outies? Is pineapple ever permissible on pizza? That’s why I feel compelled to issue the following advisory: this column touches on one of life’s three most painful inevitabilities. No, not Nickelback. Not even taxes. It’s the Big One. Death. The big sleep. The undiscovered country from whose bourn, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. This line of thinking stemmed from a recent virulent man-cold that saw me poised to dial the local undertaker for pickup, but that’s beside the point. I willingly acknowledge that more decades lie in my rearview mirror than in the windscreen. So, Gentle Reader, if this subject matter makes you squeamish, please put the paper down now, and go pour yourself a nice mug of Ovaltine. Still here? OK, let’s move on. After years of debating the merits of dust-to-dust versus ashes-to-ashes, I’m on the brink of revising my will in favour of

the mushroom suit option when it’s time to shuffle off this rusty coil. As the planet hurtles toward doomsday, the least I can do for those who survive me is to choose the most responsible corpse-disposal method available. Besides, I really, really love mushrooms. Why should my mortal remains

Ken starts talking about pushing up... mushrooms be underemployed, pushing up simpleminded daisies, when they could spawn complex and mouthwatering chanterelles, truffles, shitakes, enokis, morels or Devil’s cigars? Why waste my corpus delectus on common lawn grass or table decorations when it could grace

generations of unforgettable porcini risottos, portobello omelettes, or oyster mushroom soufflés worth dying for? A younger, more romantic version of myself might have chosen to have his scurvy-ravished remains slid anonymously into a fog-shrouded North Atlantic from the starboard rail of a four-masted schooner. Another version might prefer a space next to Chopin, Oscar Wilde, or Jim Morrison in the Cimetière Père-Lachaise in Paris. Or under a slab in Westminster Abbey within hollering distance of C h a u c e r, Browning and Dickens. As mortality looms closer, I find myself (like Luke Perry) leaning toward Jae Rhim Lee’s toxiny ba gobbling infinity burixa P T O: ial suit, whose sewn-in P HO mushroom spores are designed to render human corpses into clean, life-giving compost. With all those eager hyphae and mycelia working on my behalf, I could carry on tending my garden, while providing the basics of the occasional tagliatelle ai funghi cremini for my heirs and assigns to wash down with a decent tempranillo. On second thought, maybe I won’t go at all. I’ll just stick around for the meal. Our resident Geezer still pushes up optimism southeast of Whitehorse.

A mask of grief

Local artist transforms loss

by Myra Nicks

What’s Inside cancer, Struass’ relationship with grief deepened when her partner of 15 years was also diagnosed with cancer. Pausing in sharing her experience, Strauss pointed back to the mask of “Grief” to share the words written beside the piece. Each salty tear carried a message of love you sent until your heart held the ocean. “The message that I got about grief is that there would be something linear,” Strauss said, describing her grieving process as something visceral and far from linear in nature. “It felt like it didn’t really have a limit. Someone might say, there will be a time when this ends but I don’t think grief actually has a limit, I think you carry it with you once your heart’s been opened to it and it surprisingly just invites itself into you. “That element has taught me that I can overlap my feelings with grief and there’s room for joy and there’s still room for even being supportive when someone else is grief-stricken.” Two years ago Strauss danced with grief by honouring her partner’s wishes to part ways with the world in a Viking funeral ceremony. She wrote the words to the magician’s mask, “Winter Kiss” with her partner in mind read. It read, “... he awoke to a chill. It was a strange and wonderful beginning to an end.” Strauss is quick to point out that not all of her pieces are about grief, pointing to the piece titled

rief was the surprise visitor Claire Strauss welcomed into her world when she first started making masks. Her first mask emerged out of a monthlong art education intensive as she was finishing her undergrad in psychology. It was inspired by her father’s fatal cancer diagnoses . “There were elements which I was instructed on how the mask could emerge and as reflective of what was current in my thoughts and feelings.” Strauss turns to various artistic mediums such as dance and clay to express states of being and emotions she finds challenging to “sort out” using language. Although she may have had challenges in verbalizing some of the emotional states she has experienced, the creative process of each clay form has led to Strauss including short “poetic thought bursts” with each one. “As a platform of expression, the medium of clay has afforded me the interest in what happens when we reach critical mass of our emotions.” The piece that Strauss feels most intimately connected with at the moment is “Grief.” Earlier in her life Strauss didn’t have much of a relationship with grief. Although she experienced the death of her grandmother, she didn’t develop an understanding of grief until losing two key men in her life to cancer. “Grief is something you can’t be responsible for. You can’t hold onto the feelings of it.” A year after losing her father to

The masks help express states of being and emotions that can be difficult to share with language alone “Sunset Crush” with the cheeky words “... I love how you go down … on me,” written beside it. Something Struass feels strongly about is her choice to not sign her work. “It’s not my work once it’s someone else’s and I have this idea that if I put my signature on it somehow I sort of drag myself into it. I want to let go.” Strauss views her work as having “community in the message” for the people who are drawn to

her work. She said those who connect with what she’s created can feel support in their own life process without her directly telling them something specific. Strauss’s ceramic art pieces are on display at Baked until the end of November and are available for sale.

My old man and I, running a small section of the Ten Mile Rapids of the Groundhog River in northern Ontario. This is the 17-foot, six-inch kevlar canoe I designed and made with the high bow to crest the high waves

T

here are many canoe paddles on the market today, made in many styles, of many materials. The key to buying one to fit you personally is appreciating the adventures you will be undertaking in your canoe. If I was to go kayaking, I certainly would only use the ultra light synthetic paddles, even though I have a rare wooden kayak paddle. When it comes to canoeing I will only use the wooden (not laminated) paddle, especially when white water running. Even as a young kid, I had an attraction to the canoe and the white waters. Later in years my attraction to the canoe ended in some long research and white water challenges and soon I designed and built my own canoe to fit my life’s attraction to the challenge of the white caps. This led to one more challenge and that

Going the Extra Mile

was to make my own paddle to fit me personally. Basically, I was right-handed. In sports I batted left and played hockey left-handed. So why not make a paddle for a left-handed person? Some paddles can get personal and attractive. My wife Lisa is forever painting the blades of canoe paddles with pictures of wildlife, as illustrated by accompanying pictures. Of course, they got the attention of many canoeists and soon it was like a business on the water. We often returned from our trips minus one or two of Lisa’s signature paddles. You have a choice of different woods when buying your wood paddles. Paddles made of maple are heavier than most other woods, but they are also exceptionally strong with less chances of breaking. If its white water canoeing you’re doing, I would suggest sticking with

paddles made of maple. If it’s just occasional lake travel, then the lighter ash or spruce will do the job. I used them all until I discovered a wood from the tulip tree. This is a rare tree in Canada and the only place I know of where is may be found is in southern Ontario, where I grew up. This wood, once dried, is as strong as maple, as light as spruce and has the flexibility of ash. Being a white water challenger, I needed one more thing and that was a strong blade bottom to take on the rocks. I carefully would cut a two-inch groove up into the bottom of the blade and use waterproof glue to fix a slice of elm into the slit. Many of my white water trips took place on the Groundhog River in northwestern Ontario. It was a five or six-day trip, loaded cont’d on page 5 ...

The perfect canoe paddle ... cont’d This is the type of paddles Lisa paints wildlife on with rapids. As mentioned I was a left-handed hockey player. Just about every canoe paddle grip is straight in line with the shaft. That means your wrist is always slightly bent, but not my home made paddles. In making my paddles I would adjust the grip a little to the left so my wrist was never bent, resulting in a more comfortable canoe trip and less stress.

A paddle blade with a three-inch cross slit in the bottom of the blade. A threeinch section of elm wood was inserted in the slit to give it extra strength in running rock-filled white water rapids

Two paddle blades. The one to the left is eight inches wide and the one on the right shows the wear and tear the paddle went through during years of challenge white water rivers in Ontario,Quebec and New York State. The paddles were designed and hand made of tulip wood

Personally, I am not for laminated wood paddles, metal paddles, nor the paddles with a hook in them. There are many things to look for when buying a paddle to fit your personal self. Number one is to make sure that neither the shaft nor blade, have knots in them. The knots will weaken the paddle or shaft. Make sure that the grain in the wood runs straight up and down in the shaft and blade. A slight twist in the grain could be a weakening point and add to the chance of a break in the paddle. Another point is to make sure the paddle has some flexibility in it. Most metal and laminated paddles lack any flexibility. The width and

JJ Designs & Fabrications Ltd actual design of the blade is important in buying your paddle. If you have short arms I would suggest to stick with a maximum five-inch wide blade, especially on long trips. I was six feet tall at 16, with long arms. Anybody that fits close to those measurements should be looking for paddles with a seven-inch wide blade. Shorter arms, then look for paddles with five- inch wide blades. As to the total length of the paddle, when standing upright, chose a paddle that comes up to the bottom of your nose. I have always been the stern person and the seven-inch wide blade and total length as suggested is most ideal, especially if running rapids and controlling your canoe in windy waters. There are many types of grips (top of shaft) on the market today and over the years I have given many a good honest try. Even if you are only going out for an hour in the canoe, the grip you use can make the difference in enjoying the canoe ride or not. There are bar type grips, like a short metal pipe, and of course those with round grips. My suggestion is to stay away from those, as they will place extra pressure on your hand and wrist. Secondly, with the round grip, your position can vary in the way you take a hold of the grip end of the paddle. In buying your paddle, make sure it fits you comfortably. Many paddles on the market have thick grips. Make sure you hand is comfortable when taking a hold of the grip. This is important, especially on long canoe trips or running white water. Now, word to the wise on taking care of the paddle. Make sure the wooden paddle has a good coat of waterproof varnish, Do not place the varnish on points where your hand will be on the paddle. On these parts use linseed oil only. A varnish hand grip (like metal hand grips) are tough on the hands. Lightly sand down you paddles each year and re-varnish and linseed the specific parts before putting into storage. So I will close this week’s column by leaving something for you to dwell on: THE ESSENCE OF A NEW DAY. This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given the day to use it as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place whatever you have traded for it. Let it be something good! Caves Your Backyard PHOTO: Hugh Copland

Shelter and more

by Hugh Copland

Part Thirteen Just about every country in the world has caves. Every province and territory in Canada, including the Yukon, has sme. Caves have provided shelter to humans and animals. Culturally, they can represent dark pits of mystery or storeholds of treasure. They are always associated with an adventure.

C

aves are defined as naturally made cavities that can be entered by a human. Some can be single chambers as large in area as six soccer fields, or gaps just big enough to enter. Experienced cavers commonly squeeze through passages as narrow as 25 centimetres wide. Most of the world’s caves are formed in limestone, but there

are other forms of caves. Lava tubes can form extensive systems within basalt flows. The erosion of rocks from wave action on shorelines forms sea caves. We all heard about the recently collapsed ice cave near Kluane, which formed in old glacial ice. The most complex and interesting cave systems are the solution caves that form in rocks that

can be dissolved by running water. Rain, when it falls through the atmosphere, absorbs carbon dioxide, which forms carbonic acid. When this rain hits the ground and percolates through decaying vegetation, it can pick up 10 to 100 times more carbon dioxide, making it even more acidic. If this water flows through rocks like limestone or gypsum, it dissolves them and leaves cavities. Usually the process starts along zones of weakness in the rock such as fractures, joints or bedding planes. The shape of the passages developed depends on whether the process is occurring in the unsaturated or “vadose” zone above the water table, or in the “phreatic” saturated zone below the water table. Those developed in the

Chadburn Lake and Yukon River from FourTwenty Cave

Caves on Grey Ridge

phreatic zone are the most extensive, with passageways that are symmetrical, usually round, or elliptical cross-sections. Vadose zone cross-sections are irregular and V-shaped. Quite often cave systems are a combination of early phreatic and later vadose development. Only in vadose caves do you find fantastic formations such as stalactites and stalagmites formed by calcium enriched water dripping into the cave. These are known as speleothems. Other formations go by the names: flowstone, soda straws, cave pearls and bacon rind. Karst topography is the name given to landscapes affected by dissolution of rock. Not only are there caves, but sinkholes, towers, disappearing rivers, fissures, clints, grykes, dolines and poljes. The southwest corner of the Northwest Territories has extensive areas of karst topography occurring in both limestone and gypsum. Wood Buffalo National

Park has over 20 known karst areas containing over 2,000 sinkholes. The South Nahanni area is the best example of arctic/subarctic karst in the world. Climate is a key factor in karst development. About 70 per cent of the world’s caves are found in the tropics, 20 per cent in temperate areas and 6 per cent in the arctic or alpine areas. It is all about lots of rain and the movement of water underground. Our dry climate in the Yukon has not resulted in large cave system development. However, if you look at any limestone mountain, you can usually spot a cave. You can see them on White Mountain near Jakes Corner, Grey Ridge on the South Klondike Highway, and the informally named FourTwenty Cave on Grey Mountain in Whitehorse. What the territory lacks in quantity is made up by quality. The Bluefish Caves are located southwest of Old Crow. Within cont’d on page 7 ...

Caves ... cont’d

FourTwenty Cave, Phreatic or Vadose Development? the caves, evidence of use by humans was found dating to 24,800 years ago. A Quebec archaeologist, Jacques Cinq-Mars, “discovered” the caves in 1975. For many thousands of years, wind-blown silt, known as loess, regularly blew into the small caves and accumulated on the floor. The combination of the silt and the dry, frigid conditions in the cave preserved a record of bones, bugs, pollen and tools. Cinq-Mars carefully excavated in and around the caves. There are three caves, the largest less than the size of the inside of a typical garage. The silt has accumulated to depths of 30 to

200 centimetres. Bones of fish, birds, wolves, sheep, caribou, muskoxen moose, and other animals were found. A number of microflake tools dated to 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The oldest evidence of human use are tools made from larger bones, such as a caribou tibia fashioned into a hide-flesher. Human-made cut marks and scrapes were found on other large bones, dating from 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. That makes the site the oldest archaeological site in North America. At the time the research was published, there was much controversy over the findings. Some remains today. The date made Bluefish 11,000 years older than what had previously been the accepted time of arrival of people in North America. The early theory was that

people did not arrive here until the glaciers had started to recede 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The oldest-known use of Bluefish puts it around the time that the last ice age was at its maximum. Humans had arrived, but needed to wait for the ice blocking them to recede before they could move further inland. Since the findings at Bluefish, other sites have been found in both North and South America that confirm the earlier arrival of people to this continent. The longest cave system in the world is Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. Ideal conditions have led to over 640 kilometres of passageways. There is a large water catchment area known as the land of 10,000 sinks. The cave area itself is protected from erosion and collapse by a hard sandstone cap. Calcium nitrate was mined from the bat guano in the caves and used to make gunpowder for the War of 1812. Carlsbad Caverns is a famous cave in New Mexico near the Texas border. It is estimated the system has developed over the last four to six million years. It became a national park in 1930 and quickly became commercialized. The first elevator down to the main passages was constructed in 1931 and the underground cafeteria followed in the 50’s. The 1957 movie of Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” was filmed at Carlsbad. Caves can be very dangerous, especially those with water involved. Last year’s entrapment of a Thailand youth soccer team by rising waters lasted almost three weeks and cost the life of one rescuer. The worst cave disaster was at the Mossdale Caverns in Yorkshire, England. In 1967, six cavers drowned when a sudden rainfall filled the passages they were in.

Speleothems in Cascade Cave, Vancouver Island

If you go caving in the Yukon, you probably do not need to worry about flooding, but if it looks like it could flood, do not go in. Other caving safety musts: never go alone, take three sources of light, and beware of slippery and loose rocks. Go with an experienced caver if you can. In 1925 in Crystal Cave, Kentucky, Floyd Collins became trapped on his way out of a narrow passage by a rock that had fallen and pinned his left leg. Rescuers had no way around him to get at the rock. They were able to feed him for four days before a major rock fall blocked the cave entrance. It took 14 days to get through that, but Floyd had already died of hypothermia and starvation. So be careful, no matter what cave you are in. Play it safe and visit The Beringia Interpretive Centre. The centre has excellent mock-ups and interpretive displays of the Bluefish Caves. Actual artifacts from excavations are also on display. Winter hours are Sundays and Mondays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

IS VERY IMPORTANT! FOLLOW US ON www.whatsupyukon.com

Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

All in the family The Jennifer Scott Quintet will bring an electric jazz program to the Yukon this weekend

by Ken Bolton

I

n one sense, Jennifer Scott’s newest CD, due to be released sometime in the next few months, is a fitting tribute to the Vancouver singer/pianist’s own musical upbringing. Titled Music for Bigs & Smalls, the album consists of what Scott calls “familyfriendly jazz” with a lot of integrity. “I don’t want to ‘sing down’ to anybody, especially a child. It’s music that has been sourced and written with that in mind,” Scott said. Flashback to her own childhood, when her opera-singing mother, who also played piano and conducted choirs, allowed Scott to enroll in piano lessons earlier than normal, because she was “terribly jealous” of her older sister. “Music was a huge thing in our family. You had to do a sport and you had to do a music,” Scott recalled. Fortunately, her early musical experience transcended the straitjacket of the traditional Royal Conservatory model. “It’s so bizarre to think that every Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m., I would go to somebody else’s house and have this halfhour lesson, where my hands were placed on the piano and I had to learn to do that,” she said. That formal training is all that many children receive, Scott noted, often with only grudging support from their families. “They don’t take music in school, and they don’t have times at home, like I had, where the family just sang together, or we all went to a choir practice, or we were encouraged to just sit and play at will,” she said. “I’ve actually seen households where children were told to shut up and, ‘Get off that damned

piano.’” Scott never had to deal with that kind of message, even when she was “probably making some pretty awful” sounds. “I was never discouraged. Neither were my sister or brother. I was making up songs on the piano when I was four or five years old and singing them to myself.” Unlike most of her family, Scott’s father didn’t play music, although he loved the symphony and was a big fan of country music, as well as jazz stylists such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Nat King Cole. “He was forced into every choir my mother led, but I think he actually liked it.” When Scott was in high school, a wrist injury obliged her to take a lengthy hiatus from piano-playing. “I physically couldn’t play for a good year, so that was a big deal. It had always been a fairly direct path, to the point that my mother called me the only child that she never had to beg to go and practice the piano.” But an injured wrist didn’t keep her away from music altogether. “I always sang and primarily considered myself to be a singer, but definitely there was a stronger focus (on singing) during that

ity to focus on improving her musicianship in general, including studying musical theory. “That was really formative and I think it became important for me. I wanted to do the full circle, playing piano again and being a singer and understanding music. So, a bit of a nerd, really,” she added with a long, hearty laugh. When Scott resumed playing piano, her primary focus had shifted from classical music to jazz, largely due to the influence of Chick Correa. “I loved the rhythmic stuff and I still do. He was really the first jazz pianist that kind of made me want to take it a little more seriously,” Scott said. “Then I started looking at his PHOTO: Tonehenge influences: Bud Powell, Red Garland, people that he loved. So, those are the other piano players Vancouver jazz singer/pianist I started listening to. My first husJennifer Scott will bring her band was a huge fan of Bill Evans, quintet to Haines Junction and so he became one of my all-time heroes.” Whitehorse this weekend One of Scott’s “absolute favourite piano players” is Keith Jarrett. “I wouldn’t want to be as tembe singers. At the same time, I was singing in a jazz choir in school, peramental as him, but I would so I was focusing very strongly on love to be able to play like that.” On the vocal side, Scott credits that.” Scott also took the opportun- one of her father’s favourites. time,” she said. “I actually studied fairly seriously with a local Russian lady who taught a lot of the more serious young people who wanted to

“When I was learning tunes, I always listened to Sinatra, because he sang them pretty straight up. I always wanted to know what the actual song sounded like, so he was a very early influence, along with Ella Fitzgerald, for sure.” Among others, Scott also pays tribute to the “absolutely brilliant” Billie Holiday, the “bluesy groove” of Dinah Washington, the “R and B edge” of Etta Jones, and the “ethereal, different approach” of Norma Winston. This week, Scott will give two concerts in the Yukon with a quintet that includes her husband, Rene Worst, on bass, as well as David Sikula on guitar, Bernie Arai on drums, and Seattle-based trumpeter, Thomas Marriott. Besides several American Songbook standards and some of her signature Brazilian tunes, Scott plans to debut an original tune she is currently writing to honour her earliest and strongest musical influence: her late mother, who died last year. “The last conversations I ever had with her were us singing together. She didn’t really know who I was, but she could sing with me. Right up to the end, that was the only way we could communicate.” The Jennifer Scott Quintet will perform Saturday, Nov. 23 in the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction, and Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Yukon Arts Centre. Showtime for both concerts is 7:30 p.m. For more information, go to JazzYukon.ca.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Long beans with dry sausage and soy T

hink of long beans as a more robust green bean. They do really well cooked into stir-fries or stews and tend to be a bit starchy and woody when not cooked long enough. That makes them a great winter vegetable and a perfect addition to braised meals. This version could be a light dinner on its own paired with some simple steamed rice. There are shelf-stable Asian dry sausages available in a couple of grocery stores in Whitehorse, but you could use any sort of dry salami, or even some nice fatty fresh pork sausage if you have that on hand. Fall fell in the Yukon - time to put away the summer BBQ tools and haul out the slow cooker for warm-up, cozy feasts! This is a picture of my daughters’ Favorite -Caveman chili!

We grew carrots, tomatoes, onions and peppers in our garden and greenhouse, which add healthy veggie goodness to the pork and beef-mix base of this recipe. (And yes, every recipe is better with bacon so I double the amount called for...) My daughter decorated our first Fall pumpkin/gourd of the season to sit amongst us at dinner.

All that’s missing now is a hot cup of Firebean Roasters coffee to follow the meal.

Come prepared to dance

The 2019 Bhangra Concert will celebrate cross-cultural fusions and give the audience a chance to take part on Nov. 23

by Amber Church

G

enerally, when you decide to attend a dance performance, you can anticipate being treated to a single style of dance–ballet, highland, tap, contemporary, etc. The 2019 Bhangra Concert taking place at the Yukon Arts Centre on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., will break that mold. Gurdeep Pandher, along with his dance students, will lead the evening’s performances. “I wanted the show not only to celebrate the growth of Sikh cultural dance in the Yukon, but to also use the stage as a platform to bring other cultures and art forms together in one space. It was an opportunity to promote and celebrate unity-in-diversity and crosscultural fusions. “I believe that dance unites people, so that inspired me to bring as many Yukoners from as many different cross-cultural backgrounds as possible together to create this show.” The breadth of those cross-cultural fusions will not disappoint. Along with traditional bhangra performances, the audience will be treated to bhangra performed to Irish-Celtic music from Crooked Fork; to live music from The Hibernation; to bagpipes and drumming from the Midnight Sun Pipe Band; and to taiko drumming from the Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon. A wide range of other performers will grace the stage throughout the evening as well. Thirty youth from the Heart of Riverdale’s Rise, Focus, and Fly pre-professional

dance programs will perform with Pandher and his students. The evening will also showcase the talents of highland dancers, Indigenous dancers and Yukon College students. “I believe that being inclusive and open, and bringing the community together to do things is very important,” said Pandher. “This gives our community its strength and I wanted this show to celebrate that.” The audience is also going to get an opportunity to get in on the action. Immediately after the concert, the Arts Centre lobby will become a dance floor for free-style bhangra dance fueled by the talents of a DJ. The fun will keep going until 11 p.m. and Pandher hopes that the audience members will all stay to participate in the fun. “Now that we’re back into the cold and dark part of the year, it’s important to find ways to kindle the Christmas spirit,” he said. “What better way to do this then with high-energy bhangra moves that will put a smile on all our faces.” Tickets can be purchased directly from the website Gurdeep. ca. If you are inspired by what you see, you can also find information on this website about Pandher’s bhangra classes, the next session of which is slated to start in January. Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Idiomatic Origins with Josephine Holmes

Not my circus ...

end in the … elephants. I can’t help it; as a little girl I disliked clowns. And I didn’t trust them. What child doesn’t love a clown? I think it had something to do with their makeup and that I really couldn’t “read” them. And while the monkeys were mildly amusing, the elephants were the true stars of the show. I marvelled at their enormity and their grace, though now I appreciate their true place of belonging. Does anyone really remember the monkeys? So, if you find yourself, at some point, in that place of considering something you just ought not to consider, just stop and repeat after me: “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” Or, for The Lion King generation, “Hakuna matata!”—which has a similar sentiment and comes out of East Africa, in the Swahili language— “hakuna” meaning “there is/are no” and “matata” meaning “troubles.” (Also from Wikipedia). Or, you can get creative and create your own version of the Polish idiom, though “Not my ocean, not my mermaids!” is already taken. Your friends will love it.

has a serious undertone. It is the equivalent of saying that something is not my problem while, at the same time, avoiding the apathetic tone that “It’s not my problem” sometimes has. The idiom originated in Poland.

“Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy” (from Wikipedia) is a useful expression or even self-reminder when you are tempted to take on more than you ought to, or to get involved in something you really don’t need to. (Perhaps it’s

Blue Collar North with Carey Marshall

When counting sheep doesn’t help to sleep - but this method might not either … I

was watching a World War Two documentary the other day and it showed an apartment building in France that had been damaged by German bombs early in the morning. The building was still intact, except that the entire front wall was missing. On the eighth floor, rescuers found a man who had drank a bottle of wine the night before and was still sound asleep in his bed. I remember when I could sleep like that and I didn’t need any assistance from wobbly pop. In the spring of 1972, I was sharing a mobile home with three other people in Hay River, Northwest Territories. I worked really long hours, so I rarely saw the other three tenants. I usually only saw them on Saturday nights. I would come home from work after 2 a.m. and there was usually a party going on. I could never figure out where they found some of the characters that came to the parties. I believe it was the third Saturday in a row when I came through the porch door around 2:15 a.m. to find a party that sounded like the wildest one yet. I hardly recognized anyone. There was one fella sitting in the corner alone, so I went over his way and started talking to him. He told me he worked on the NTCL tug boats that pushed barges to Inuvik and he had a few

Carey recalls sleeping through some big explosions days off. He seemed to be nervous and a little paranoid. He said he was leery of some of the party animals at the other end of the room and if they tried anything, he would take care of them. While he was expressing the problem with the party animals, his right hand was moving slightly in and

out of his jacket pocket. Then he pulled his hand out of his pocket a little further and showed me a small pistol. Yeah, looks like he’s got everything under control, I thought as I went to bed. I got up Sunday morning after 11 a.m., wondering if everyone

was still alive. The living room was a mess, but there were no dead bodies. With the house in the same shape as it had been the previous two Sundays, I went to go wash up. I entered the washroom. There were four shelves above the bathtub that normally held all kinds of bathroom items, but

every single item had fallen in the bathtub. This was definitely the wildest party ever. I was already anticipating the story that would explain how this happened, but I would have to wait for the answer from my roommates, since everyone was in dreamland. Would they even remember? I headed off to the coffee shop for breakfast and sat with a couple to catch up on the latest gossip. “That was a hell of an explosion this morning,” a fella said, from a table across from us. “Was it ever,” said one of my table mates. “What explosion?” I asked. “A Kapps fuel barge blew up this morning,” he said. “Did anybody get hurt?” I asked. “I think there were casualties,” he replied. Now the bathroom mayhem was starting to make sense to me. “Well I guess the partiers in dreamland are off the hook on this one,” I thought to myself. The fuel barge explosion killed two workers who were working nearby, and I was sleeping less than two blocks away. I really miss not being able to sleep like that any more so pass the wobbly pop! Carey Marshall Is from Whitehorse and has lived on both sides of the mountain north of 60 for almost 50 years.
