The annual 12 Days of Christmas Market returns to Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on Dec. 12 by Amber Church

s the holiday season rapidly approaches, Yukoners find themselves in the full swing of seasonal craft markets. One of the most highly-anticipated events in the calendar, and the largest in the 2019 season, is the 12 Days of Christmas Market, taking place this year from Dec. 12 to Dec. 23 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Cascia Krolczyk, the market manager for the Fireweed Community Market Society, which runs the 12 Days of Christmas Market, explains what makes the market

so unique. “All of the craft fairs are so great and the 12 Days of Christmas Market is just part of the hustle and bustle of the season,” she said. “But if I had to try and describe what makes it a market you don’t want to miss, I would have to say it’s the accessibility and the local experience we offer. We are open for 12 full days with long hours – 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the week. This lets customers choose when they want to shop. If they prefer a quieter time, that is possible, and

The largest Christmas Market on the calendar is the 12 Days of Christmas Market and their diverse collection of vendors

if they love the hustle and bustle of a Saturday morning, we have those too! “With over 100 vendors, all local to the Yukon, we have some really amazing local treasures!” Krolczyk said there is a good mix this year of new vendors bringing interesting work to the market, as well as established vendors bringing their new creations. “I’m really excited about all the new local vendors participating,” she said. “We have 30 new vendors this year and all their stuff looks so great! I’m also really excited to have two different maker groups represented. Forager’s General Store and Clay Tree Studio both represent five and four artists, respectively.” There is more to the 12 Days of Christmas Market than just the work of amazing local artisans, food producers and craftspeople, however. The market will again run its daily free draws for gift baskets donated by groups of vendors. Local buskers will entertain the crowds as they shop. There will also be a couple of small market tents set up in the hallway outside of the main space for NGOs to use on a rotating basis throughout the market’s run. “It will be a way of connecting the summer market to this one,” said Krolczyk. “It’s just a single cont’d on page 3 ...

We also now accept all methods of payment with no limits of debit purchases.”

He is the opposite of small Because he‛s really tall. Jeremy is his name An‛ his basketball likes to aim. Sometimes he has to stoop Or he can jump higher than a hoop. Jeremy is not like us little guys ‘Cause he‛s really tall in size. Jeremy is not exactly little ‘Cause Dick only reach up to his middle. They made the doors too low

Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

They forgot this likes to grow. Jeremy is not exactly short That‛s why he plays on the basketball court. Jeremy can reach really higher An‛ a ladded he doesn‛t require. When Jeremy came up to Old Crow We wondered where he learned to grow. Mr. Jeremy is my tall friend But he always makes my neck bend. Jeremy is six feet eleven An‛ he can almost reach Heaven.

here is a right way and a wrong way to cook your wild meat, but there is one other thing you should know about getting the best taste possible and that is freezing storage time. Once wild meat has been left too long in the freezer the taste starts to deteriorate.

ELK KEBABS If elk is your favourite wild meat, then we have an ideal treat for you. It’s just as fancy as the best of the restaurants could serve! Ingredients: 12 ½ lbs elk shoulder or leg of elk, boned 16 small white onions peeled and parboiled 1 large green or bell pepper, cut into 1 ½ inch chunks ½ cups olive oil 16 cherry tomatoes ½ cup red wine vinegar ½ lb large brown mushrooms with stems removed 1 ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp oregano leaves 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ¼ tsp ground black pepper Instructions: Cut the elk shoulder or hip into 1 ½ inch chunks. In large bowl, combine elk chunks with the fol-

lowing six ingredients: olive oil, vinegar, salt, oregano, garlic, and black pepper. Cover and refrigerate for 4 to 6 hours. Drain elk, reserving marinade. On six 12 or 14 inch metal skewers, thread elk chunks alternately with green pepper chunks, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. Brush with marinade. Place skew on rack in broiler pan. Boil for 15 minutes about 5 inches from the heat source, turning meat to brown all sides. Baste with the remaining marinade. This should make 6 servings. In the above recipe, I have substituted venison for the elk meat. MOOSE ROULADEN Ingredients: Moose round steak Salt and pepper to taste Prepared mustard such as Dijon 1 can beef consomme Bacon strips Oil Dry minced onion Dill pickles sliced into quarter strips Instructions: Cut moose round steak thin and pound into flat portions about 3x6 inches, depending on the number of people to be served as this makes 2 portions per person.

On each 3x6-inch piece of steak, spread a coating of prepared mustard. Lay on a strip of bacon, sprinkle with onion flakes and roll around the dill pickle. Secure the rouladen with a toothpick. Brown the rouladen in a small amount of oil. Add the beef consomme and simmer for 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on thickness of the steak and tenderness. There should be enough gravy accumulated to spoon over noodles, which can be served with rouladen. BEAR CHOPS It is important that with all big game animals you remove as much fat as possible before cooking. Ingredients: 4 to 6 medium sized chops 2 white onions salt and pepper to taste 1 can of beef or 2 bouillon cubes dissolved in 1 cup water 1 cup flour ½ cup brown mushrooms, sliced 1 egg 1 lemon ½ cup milk 1 cup bread crumbs Instructions: Add salt and pepper to flour and dredge the chops in the mixture. Mix up the egg and milk, cont’d on page 7 ...

Getting the best out of wild meat... cont’d Add the steaks and sear quickly on both sides. Add sliced onions to the meat and cook until they are golden brown. Now add the tomatoes, wine, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and celery. Cover the skillet and place it in the oven. Cook for 2 hours. Check often to make sure of the moisture. Remove cover for the last 15 minutes.

ENJOY!

I will close this week’s column with words written on a plaque hanging on my office wall: Yesterday is gone, I cannot change it. Today is now and I will do my best to enjoy it. Tomorrow is my future and I will do my best to meet that day with positive thoughts, as it is not only my future, but also my very destiny.

If so, you may be compromising your safety as well as those around you! Most all-season tires stop gripping normally at 5 degrees Celsius, whereas a designated winter tire continues to grip into the cold. Don’t let the term all-season fool you, these tires are designed for wet/dry traction and are not meant to operate in the winter. If you are not sure if you have a winter or all-season tire you can look at the sidewall of your tire and try to find a pictograph which is the government designation for winter tires, these tires have passed the testing that is required to be classed as a winter tire!

This pictograph is a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake in the middle and is the only way a tire can be classed as winter.

Words are a writer’s tool box

Doug delves into words writers may unsheathe for literary duels

Etymology: The origin and development of words by: Doug Sack

P

eople who write a lot have different perspectives and relationships with words than those who simply read or say them. If the pen is truly mightier than the sword, (as said English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839), a writer’s tools could be favourably compared to the mightiest of weapons if he or she was out to slay dragons or defeat nations. But most writers only want to communicate thoughts to others and most stories are just small edifices constructed with the essential building blocks of literature called words. Just as a carpenter must know

wood, a mason must know stone, an artist must know colour and a musician must know melody, a writer must know words if the goal is to build a readable story, no matter if it’s intended for publication or just for the fun of it. Your correspondent has had a love affair with words since the first successful sale of some to a publication at the age of nine in return for the staggering sum of $5. This bonanza came at the

same time five hours of boring work carrying golf clubs for cheapskate hackers netted only $2.75. Cheapskate: (n.): also cheap skate, “miserly person,” 1896, from cheap (adj.), second element perhaps from American English slang skate or “worn-out horse” (1894), which is of uncertain origin.) The first word I truly fell in love with, as a young teen not yet old enough to drive was

“The Three Princes of Serendip”

love with Serendipity, for she has served me well all these years and I’ve put her to work whenever possible, but she did attract some competition when I was a young adult fighting the lure of the quill. Ubiquitous (adj.): “being, existing, or turning up everywhere,” 1800, from ubiquity + -ous. The earlier word was ubiquitary (c. 1600), from Modern Latin ubiquitarius, from ubique.) This word was introduced to me by a beautiful young woman from Ontario I met in Dawson City in the early 70s who seemed to be everywhere and was always happy cont’d on page 11 ...

Serendipity (n.): 1754 (but rare before 20c.), coined by Horace Walpole (1717-92) in a letter to Horace Mann (dated Jan. 28); he said he formed it from the Persian fairy tale “The Three Princes of Serendip,” whose heroes “were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of.” The name is from Serendip, an old name for Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka). Words are a writer’s toolbox ... cont’d to see me, so I married her. Of course, not all words end with love stories and marriage, such as. Awesome (adj.): 1590s, “profoundly reverential,” from awe. Meaning “inspiring awe or dread” is from 1670s; weakened colloquial sense of “impressive, very good” is recorded by 1961 and was in vogue from after c. 1980. Related: Awesomely; awesomeness.) I grew to loathe the modern misuse of that word but not this next one. Loathe (v.): Old English laðian “be hateful or displeasing,” from lað “hated; hateful” (see loath). Cognate with Old Saxon lethon “be evil or hateful,” Old Norse leiða “disgust.” Main modern sense of “to hate, be disgusted with” is attested by c. 1200. Impersonal use (it loathes me = “I am disgusted with it”) persisted through 16c. Related: Loathed; loathing.) The word I currently loathe the most is problematic (adj.): c. 1600, “doubtful, questionable,” from French problematique (15c.), from Late Latin problematicus, from Greek problematikos “pertaining to a problem,” from problematos, genitive of problema (see problem). Specific sense in logic, differentiating what is possible from what is necessarily true, is from 1610s. Related: Problematical (1560s); problem-

relative pronoun qui “who” (from PIE root kwo-, stem of relative and interrogative pronouns) + pro “for” (see pro-) + quo, ablative of quid. Isn’t this fun, Donald? Fun (n.): “diversion, amusement, mirthful sport,” 1727, earlier “a cheat, trick” (c. 1700), from verb fun (1680s) “to cheat, hoax,” which is of uncertain origin, probably a variant of Middle English fonnen “befool” (c. 1400; see fond). Scantly recorded in 18c. and stigmatized by Johnson as “a low cant wait word.” Older senses are preserved in phrase to make fun of (1737) and funny money “counterfeit bills” (1938, though this use of the word may be more for the sake of the rhyme). See also funny. Fun and games “mirthful carryings-on” is from 1906. You can play by searching Online Etymology Dictionary. It’s a good cure for pre-season cabin fever in November. And, finally, everything in life has a beginning, a middle and an end (n.): Old English ende: “end, conclusion.”)

Pack your dictionary before preparing to spar with writers atically.) It is the modern equivalent of awesome and is definitely NOT cool (adj.): Old English: figuratively, of persons, “unperturbed, undemonstrative, not excited or heated by passions,” from Proto-

Germanic *koluz (source also of Middle Dutch coel, Dutch koel, Old High German chuoli, German kühl “cool,” Old Norse kala “be cold”), from PIE root *gel- “cold; to freeze.” Also totally not cool is a Latin

phrase I hope to never hear again after 2020: Quid pro quo: 1560s, from Latin, literally “something for something, one thing for another, or This for That” from nominative and ablative neuter singulars of

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Oven-roasted spice-rubbed chicken wings

O

ven roasting is my favorite way to cook a chicken wing at home - both grilling and deep frying feel kind of high maintenance compared to the ease of pan roasting. The final product is crisp and tender and ready for snacking in under an hour. I prefer whole chicken wings, and always choose to leave the tips on. If you don’t like them though, feel free to remove the tips before tossing the wings with the spice rub. Serves 4

Telling a new story

Yukon citizen journalists head to the Kingdom of eSwatini to gather stories of gender equality by Mark Kelly

W

inter had not yet fully set in in Whitehorse, but you wouldn’t know that on the grey and blustery day I met with four Yukon citizen journalists by the SS Klondike. Paige Hopkins, Emily Turner-Davis, Geri-Lee Buyck and Rosemary Oslund are bound for the Kingdom of eSwatini, a landlocked country entirely surrounded by South Africa. We were meeting to photograph their pretrip selves and talk about their upcoming journey. The four are part of a threemonth citizen journalism program with the Northern Council for Global Cooperation (NCGC). Through writing, photography and audio their goal is to “tell powerful stories that challenge discrimination and oppression and raise awareness about the realities of gender inequality around the world.” The program began in Whitehorse in October and included workshops and assignments tailored to develop the necessary skills for work they will do while overseas. “The program will provide an opportunity for the participants to learn about gender equality through journalism and ethical storytelling” said Tracey Wallace, executive director. Wallace has a long history working in eSwatini and she says that there is “a confluence of culture and gender equality in eSwatini. Culture is a big part of Swazi life. The participants have a task of telling a story in all its complexity.” Brittney Potvin is the program manager with NCGC and she underscores that “this is not a journalism program, but a program to help participants gain skills to be more engaged citizens.” During the Yukon-based portion of the training, the participants worked with professional journalists and photographers. During this process, all of the participants seeded story ideas in an area of interest that they would like to explore when they arrive in eSwatini. While there, they

Potvin will also provide necessary clarity for functioning as journalists in the country. “The opportunity to go to Africa is amazing, and the opportunity to go the way that we are going is also amazing” said Turner-Davis. “It’s a cool opportunity to go with an organization that doesn’t feel exploitative. It doesn’t feel extractive at all, it just feels that the intention is to have people at the centre of their stories … the whole point for me is that I want to go where the story and the

women lead us.” For Oslund, the program really connects with her existing thinking about international development. “This program just struck on so many topics that are really interesting to me; gender, journalism, endogenous development, making sure we represent people’s voices accurately and authentically … the opportunity to go and actually speak to the women there and focus on that really struck me as very valuable.” Hopkins would like to create a photo essay of mothers who “are not there anymore because of the HIV epidemic.” She has a vision

of creating portraits of women with an item that reminds them of their own mothers. She is considering a multigenerational project that explores how the absence of mother has impacted the family, and is considering the question, “what is the impact on eSwatini society as a whole having a lack of maternal parental figures?” For Buyck, connection to land and environment is very important. “I am very curious and passionate about climate change and how it impacts the land. I would like to explore how women and girls are impacted by climate change.”

Exhibit runs until January 31, 2020 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

The program continues after their return on Dec. 15. For the months of January and February, the participants will continue to develop their stories and work on pitches to have those stories published by various media across the country. What is certain, they will return with new and rich personal and professional experiences. Mark Kelly is an award winning photographer, writer and instructor based in Whitehorse. When not at his desk, he’ll likely be found working in his studio or shooting under the northern lights.

Hello Everybody, We invite you to share your photos of Yukon life. Email your high-resolution images with a description of what’s going on to editor@whatsUpYukon.com.

Did you know... We provide year-round offerings!

After the Remembrance Day ceremony, I took a bike trip to Miles Canyon where I discovered what looked like the beginning of another ice age.

• Whitehorse Area • Breweries • Miles Canyon • Wildlife Preserve • Hot Springs • Carcross • Kluane

As I arrived at the suspension bridge, I saw a few ice sheets floating through the canyon. One got caught and the next one was pushed over the first. Along the rim trail, I took the second picture of these natural ice sculptures.

Josephine explores the more foreboding writing on the wall

T

hey’re ookey and they’re spooky … and perhaps one of the ookiest and spookiest of the household was Thing T. Thing, the disembodied hand affectionately known as “Thing” on The Addams Family. (Baby boomers reading this now have The Addams Family finger-snapping theme song playing in their grey matter). “Thank you, Thing” was heard often as Thing was not so ominous as it was intelligent, playful, helpful, funny, agile and even rhythmic and graceful—unlike another disembodied hand, from another idiom with a biblical origin and from whence the saying “The writing’s on the wall” is derived. In Daniel chapter 5, King Belshazzar was hosting a feast, as kings were known to do, when a hand suddenly appeared (is that you, Thing? Alas, no.) and began writing on the palace wall, in Aramaic. It gave a dire prediction, a warning and, as Daniel interpreted the words, a forecast of doom for the Babylonian Empire.

Indeed, the hand in Daniel chapter 5 was way ookier and spookier than Thing ever was. The idiom—thankfully minus the disembodied hand and with the writing meant figuratively—is still used today to refer to some not-so-pleasant but inevitable outcome or looming danger, or to something that is just obvious.

It may be heard as “The writing’s on the wall” or some slight variation of that but with the same connotation. As with so many of the idioms, though, their constant use (or overuse) has had a tendency to

water down the original meaning, which for this one renders it as not so ookey or spooky. Occasionally, the idiom is used when its meaning is more nebulous. Consider the following, for instance, even though we’ll all know the answer by the time this is published: “What do you think the outcome of the 2019 election will be?” “Meh. I think the writing’s on the wall.” (Now that’s a nice, safe answer, isn’t it, because no one knows what that meant and, being politically correct, they’re not going to ask.) The modern-day usage of this idiom is far more casual than its biblical counterpart, with less of a doomsday feel to it and with a little more of Thing’s intelligence and wit. Thank you, Thing! Volunteers essential to success of

VOLUNTEER

2020 Arctic Winter Games Event aims for 1,800 volunteers

by Echo Ross

ith just over 100 days to go until the 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) kick off in Whitehorse on March 15, the drive for volunteers is in full swing. The 2020 AWG host society will celebrate the 100-day milestone in conjunction with International Volunteer Day on Dec. 5, hosting an event that focuses on the importance of volunteers, as well as the announcement of the volunteer program sponsors. This will be the seventh time the Yukon has hosted the AWG, and 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary since the first ever Games were held in Yellowknife. Hosting a multi-sport Games of any size requires a large workforce and the 2020 Games are no exception, with an estimated 1,800 volunteers needed for the successful delivery of the event. As of Nov. 25, more than 1,100 volunteers were registered in the system. Yukoners are known for their last-minute nature, but the goal of the volunteers division is to reach the 1,800 mark early in the new year. Approximately 250 planning volunteers have been in place since the beginning of the year, serving as division or venue team leads. During Games time, volunteers will fill a variety of roles, assisting in areas including accommodations, food services, box office, spectator services, logistics and marketing. Tasks can range from taking tickets and serving special guests, to fittingout venues and constructing bunk beds in participant accommodations. There are also sport-specific roles, including results and major technical officials. One of the largest contributing factors to volunteer recruitment and retention in the Yukon is major employer leave policies, which allow paid time off for employees to volunteer and participate.

Volunteers Division staff Meaghen (l) and Courtney, Vice President Sue Meikle and Chair of Recruitment Bev Buckway, and AWG 2020 mascot Däch’äw 2 The Volunteer Recruitment Committee 3 Planning volunteers at the Interdependency Meeting earlier this year 4 Volunteers have been involved in many projects, including storing mattresses the athletes will use 1

These policies are currently in place with the Yukon government, as well as the City of Whitehorse, the Yukon Hospital Corporation, Yukon College, private sector businesses such as Northwestel, and First Nations governments such as the Kwanlin Dün First Nation. Of course, the 2020 AWG Host Society has also been employing other tactics, such as community engagement visits outside of Whitehorse, and appearances at volunteer fairs and other community events. Members of the host society’s volunteer division also make presentations to employees at smaller businesses in the community, as well as to students at Yukon College and local high schools. To become a volunteer for the Games, you need to commit a minimum of 12 hours over the course of the week. Volunteers will be recognized for their contribution with a volunteer uniform, pin and three post-games thankyou events. All registration is done online. Once the form is filled out, volunteers must complete a criminal record check before they are approved. The check can be done through the 2020 AWG office at no charge. Volunteers are asked to complete their checks as soon as possible, in order to avoid backlog closer to Games time. The office will stay open until 7 p.m. on Dec. 5 as part of the 100 Days To Go celebration, allowing potential volunteers a chance to get assistance with sign-up and criminal record checks. For more information about the volunteer opportunities available at the 2020 Arctic Winter Games, or to sign up online, visit AWG2020.org. Echo Ross is the marketing manager for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games.

This year’s recipient, Afan Jones, brought together his passions for orienteering and volunteerism in the work he was honoured for.

T

he Yukon Orienteering Association hosted the 2018 North American Orienteering Championships in August 2018 (NAOC2018). Jones served as race director for the event.

“The host committee was involved in organizing a series of eight daily competitions at eight separate sites between Whitehorse and Carcross with up to 15 different courses per day,” Jones explained. “Bussing, accommodation and oversight by the International Orienteering Federation all had to be considered. My role as race director was to coordinate the land use, mapping, course setting and controlling of all NAOC2018 events. “The role also involved assisting with the Canadian Championship events which took place on August 23-24, 2018. That entailed visiting all control sites – a much more enviable volunteer role than others which spent much more time at a computer screen.” Jones was driven to give so much of his time to the event by his lifelong commitment to, and passion for orienteering. “The lure of orienteering for me comes from the combination of physical exercise with a mental map puzzle- figuring out the best route between controls. I was never much of a runner so it was good to have a mental distraction,” he said. “As orienteering participants, we all benefit from events staged around the globe. This organizing role provided an opportunity to give back.” He adds that the dedication

and professionalism of many individuals within the Yukon Orienteering Association and the Canadian orienteering community provided additional motivation to step forward. “We all shared the goal to provide for both a highlevel orienteering competition and future recreational opportunities,” he said. Jones wants to make sure to credit all those he worked with on NAOC2018. “When I received the city volunteer award at the April 18 ceremony I dedicated it to the whole NAOC2018 organizing committee,” he explains, “I was one cog in that committee. I also said I was deeply humbled to stand beside other nominees from the care and support agencies in Whitehorse whose volunteerism is so important to the fabric of the city and community.” He also has some advice for others interested in getting more deeply involved in volunteerism. “You need to be fully committed to the cause - I found I needed a kind of a blind passion for the role!” Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

What’s your story?

Telling it is a way to walk between worlds by Dianne Homan

W

e’re all tellers of stories. Some are one-liners. Maybe you’re with your siblings, and one of you says, “remember the time Grandpa sneezed so hard his false teeth fell in the soup bowl” and you all laugh hysterically. That works because all of you know the backstory–who was there, what kinds of relationships they had with Grandpa, how he felt about having false teeth and what he did to retrieve them from the soupy depths. If you’re telling this story to someone who is unfamiliar with it, you fill in enough juicy details that they see the humor in it too. That’s what storytellers do. If a young child requests, “tell me a story,” you might pull out a favorite picture book to read aloud and talk about. You might retell an event from the child’s own life, or you might make up a little story about the tooth fairy, or what the neighborhood dogs are saying when they bark, or about the patterns of stars in the night sky. Many of us have done this kind of storytelling. It’s a bit of a leap from there to being a storyteller in front of an audience. Mauretia Holloway is keen to encourage that leap. In April, she kicked off the “Walk Between Worlds” monthly storytelling event at Well-Read Books. The poster image of a woman laugh-

ing with delight at something a straight-faced gorilla appears to have just said has generated a lot of interest around town. It certainly caught my eye. So, although it had been some years since I’d done any storytelling (and, even then, mostly to audiences of children), I took a deep breath and signed up to be a teller. It was great fun. There was an amazing variety of stories from tellers young and old. The audience was supportive. And as a few months went by, more brave souls stepped up to tell tales. A stylistic divide became apparent after a while between those who told a story and those who read aloud a story they had written. I’ve done both. The theme suggested for the very first Walk Between Worlds in April was a good fit with a story I had written. Because I had considered and re-considered every word, I felt I wanted to honor that effort by reading those exact words to the audience. Mauretia encouraged me and others in a group of regular tellers, to free the story from the pages. So I’ve done that with the classic folk and fairy tales I tell. To prepare, I read the story so many times that I can see it like a movie in my head. I write up an outline for myself to reinforce the order of certain events and plot shifts. Then I leave the outline behind.

The Walk Between Worlds monthly storytelling event provides Yukoners a chance to hone their craft I practice the story out loud and experiment with different voices, pregnant pauses and pacing. Can I do that with a story of my own? Sure, Mauretia says. She has immersed herself in the world of storytelling for much of her life, starting in her home country of South Africa. In Toronto, she studied with Michelle Tocher, going deep into ancient archetypal myths and legends and finding their themes mirrored in fairy tales such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. It was in doing that coursework that she was challenged to re-work and tell stories.

Her involvement in the culturally rich and diverse world of storytelling goes on. The monthly events at WellRead Books continue with an evening of storytelling on Thursday Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. Tellers will bring to life the seasonally appropriate theme, “Gifts from the Dark.” I am challenging myself to tell a story I wrote, without the pages in front of me. Maybe you will be inspired to tell a story, too. In the new year, some months will be devoted to workshopping, developing storytelling skills and confidence, and planning for fu-

ture events filled with stories–a rich and rewarding alternative to screen time. If you’d like to join in or learn more, email walkbworlds@gmail.com. Dianne Homan is a retired dancer and teacher, who enjoys all things creative. She is the author of Walk Your Own Camino, about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain, and the children’s book, Moon Bread: A Story of the Phases of the Moon, both of which are available at Mac’s Fireweed Books.
