he Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre Sewing Group would like to encourage you to see their work in Indigenous Purpose, an exhibition featuring their nine dog blankets and two podium banners. It’s on display at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto until Jan. 5, 2020. It’s part of the Festival of Cool: The Arctic, which opens with a Dec. 10 celebration that will launch five days of panel discussions and films about living in the North. The dog blankets look stunning in the vitrines, little glassed-in boxes in the hallway. There, you can also see artists working in hot glass or ceramics in their on-site residency program, check out other exhibitions at Harbourfront, or the Power Plant Gallery next door, or go skating. Not that the show will be desperate for audience numbers. During the Day of the Dead festivities at Harbourfront, 6,000 people saw the show. Curator Melanie Egan says it’s realistic to think that by the end of its run, at least 10,000 people will have had a chance to

view these artworks. She said people have loved seeing them so far. In particular, Harbourfront hosted representatives from Norwegian Craft from Oslo, to whom the project was particularly relevant, as they were doing outreach towards reconciliation with the Indigenous Sami people in Norway. The show also saw a lot of traffic during the Toronto Biennial of Art and the 10-day Toronto International Festival of Authors, which also took place at Harbourfront. In the far hallway, another exhibition installed in vitrines approaches topics of traditional art production from a more critical standpoint. Nicolas Galanin has created Fair Warning: A Sacred Place by putting into the vitrines photographs of other museum vitrines with Tlingit objects removed. Audio recording plays from contemporary live auctions of Native American art. Through this exhibition, Galanin asks who is selling, who is buying, and what relationship or claim do they make to the art and culture they are trafficking?

PHOTOS: Nicole Bauberger These are important questions to ask on the journey (hopefully) towards reconciliation. Egan therefore appreciated even more deeply the love and celebration embodied in the dog blankets. “These pieces are joyful. As you pick them up, the bells start jingling. The detail and care and love in them come through clearly. And the home tan hide smells amazing.” She said she feels honoured to have handled the pieces. As the Harbourfront Centre tries to move towards reconciliation, it’s now ingrained in their policies to celebrate leadership in Indigenous Craft. Florence Moses’ leadership in the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre Sewing Group is part of what the exhibition celebrates, with a quote from her on the interpretive panel beside the exhibition. The group’s work came to Egan’s attention through an article in Studio Magazine, a magazine dedicated to fine craft and design, which was co-authored by the sewing group and the writer of

The dog blankets on display were created by Shirley Adamson, Deb Enoch, Nyla Klugie-Migwans, Karen Lepine, Pauline Livingstone, Elizabeth Moses, Florence Moses, Diane Olsen, Velma Olsen. Amélie Druillet, Anne Tayler, Darcy McDiarmid and Nicole Bauberger were involved in the collaborative podium banners. All 10 blankets have been collected by the Yukon Permanent Art Col-

Anne Tayler also created a dog blanket, which is on display as part of Natural Connections at the newly renovated Yukon College library with other new works in the Permanent Collection until April 2020. In addition to the dog blankets, the show features two podium banners, created collectively on home tanned hide, by the sew-

The lost camel of an ancient Persian fairy tale From fairy tales to detective fiction by Doug Sack

Doug shares the origins of serendipity from the tale of the “Three Princes of Serendip” following a lame camel PHOTO: Pixabay

“Elementary, my dear Watson.”

I

n Persia, there once was a wise king with three sons. He mockbanished the young princes from his kingdom so they could go out and test themselves against the dangers of the real world. Their journey became a fairy tale known as “The Three Princes of Serendip,” which was the ancient name of the country formerly known as Ceylon and currently known as Sri Lanka. Barely into their adventure, the boys deduced they were following a lame camel down the road. The camel was blind in one eye, missing a tooth, carrying a pregnant woman, and packing honey on one side and butter on the other. They deduced this even though they had not yet seen the camel. When they arrived at a nearby

village and told the locals about the camel they were following, they were immediately arrested because the camel was reported missing and presumed stolen. They were hauled before the local monarch who demanded to know how they knew so much about an animal they said they had never seen and the princes defended themselves thusly: The tracks on the road showed only three hoofs with the fourth being dragged, so the boys knew the camel was lame. The grass along the sides of the road had only been eaten on the dry, dusty side while the nice green grass on the other side was untouched, so the boys surmised the camel must be blind in one eye.

Because there were lumps of chewed grass on the center of the road the size of a camel’s tooth, the boys inferred they fell through the gap in the camel’s mouth made by a missing tooth. The butter and honey payloads were deduced by noticing ants had been attracted to the dripping butter on one side of the road and flies to the leaking honey on the other. The pregnant woman was explained by the smallness of her feet, the scent of her urine and the fact she needed to use her hands to remount the camel after a rest stop. Shortly after they presented their case, the lost camel was found. The angry ruler was so impressed with their deductive logic, he hired all three princes to become advisors to his country

and complimented their father for the success of their educations. This “silly fairy tale,” according to Horace Walpole, the man who gave us Serendipity, goes back nearly to the time of Christ as it was based on the life of Persian King Bahram V, who ruled the Sassanid Empire (420–440). Stories of his rule are told in epic style by poets of the region, Firdausi in 1010, Nizami in 1197 and Khusrau in 1302. The camel story is just one of many attributed to the charismatic, albeit short-lived, ruler. Voltaire, in his classic Zadig published in 1737, used the Three Princes yarn, but substituted a dog and horse for the camel in the novel, which is credited with introducing detective fiction to French readers. When American Edgar Allan Poe created detective M. Claude Dupin in The Murders in the Rue Morgue in 1841, he pioneered the modern fiction detective genre utilizing the analytic style of the three princes, as did British doctor, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of history’s most well-known detective, Sherlock Holmes, with his most famous explanation for how he solved the

latest complex mystery: “Elementary, my dear Watson.” Your inquisitive chronicler, who had never heard of The Three Princes before the etymological study of Serendipity published in these pages recently, was simply fishing for a fairy tale to rewrite for his grandchildren and accidentally stumbled on this incredible yarn of how detective-type stories were invented and institutionalized. Do we need to point out in conclusion, THAT is the very definition of serendipity? The word is a rockstar in the world of literary history.

Larry suggests that sticking to a smaller bladed knife is often the best choice

O

ne of the more common errors made by someone young or otherwise inexperienced in selecting a knife is to buy something big (heavy) with a thick, long blade. A common example is any knife similar to the famous Bowie knife or one of those large “survival” knives with the hollow handle, chock full of things you’ll supposedly need in a survival situation. Sadly the items that come with the knife are extremely low-quality and will certainly let you down when you need them most. Survival kits are really important, but one that is any good won’t come in a knife handle. These large-bladed knives seem to be good only for chopping, which is handy, but they are really inadequate for any other camp or meat care task. This type of knife is usually fairly lowpriced and extremely low-quality, although some better quality units are available but still limited in the tasks they can perform. A lowpriced, big-bladed knife is really hard on the stitching in a sheath, which will also be of low quality, matching the knife. A blade of four inches (maximum) can do anything you can learn to do. Longer, unless it is one of your “other” knives ie: fil-

leting or boning will not make the moment better. Many a moose has been field dressed with a small pocket knife, although I doubt anyone would want to do it a second time.

“... do some

research, ask

questions, and spend your

dollars on items that are safe to

use and will serve you well.”

... Larry Leigh

Many knives on the market are fashioned after “military” or “fighting” knives. These are usually cheap replicas of the real knife and have no use in the outdoors. They are attractive because of the suggested original purpose, but

beware of the marketing and buy something that will be useful. Today I happened to see and examine some really inexpensive multi-tools priced at $10 to $15. They looked really attractive and had just about everything you could imagine as an edge or a tool. They are very low-quality and the use of them for other than the lightest duty will cause them to break and very likely injure the user. You aren’t saving money buying one of these “super-cheap” tools. As said before, do some research, ask questions, and spend your dollars on items that are safe to use and will serve you well. A knife or multi-tool for Christmas is a great and useful gift, but if the giver has no knowledge of the topic, perhaps a few researched suggestions from you would be appropriate. Larry Leigh is an avid angler, hunter and all-round outdoors person who prefers to cook what he harvests himself. He is a past president of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and a retired hunter-education coordinator for the Government of Yukon. Please send comments about his articles to wild@whatsupyukon.com.

Time for Birds with Jenny Trapnell

Christmas bird counts are fun for kids, too!

J

ulie Bauer loves birding with kids. The-long-time Haines Junction resident and birder is leading Canada’s most northerly Christmas Bird Count (CBC) for Kids on Dec. 14. The unique event is part of an international citizen science program for monitoring and conserving birds. “We get local and visiting kids outside to enjoy nature and watch birds,” Bauer said. “It’s so much fun.” The family event is modelled after the annual Christmas Bird Counts held each year in the Yukon, and throughout the Western Hemisphere. There are 13 official Christmas Bird Counts scheduled in the Yukon from mid-to-late December this year. The Christmas Bird Counts (CBC), first started in 1900 by a New York ornithologist, invite new and experienced birders to observe and record local winter birds within a specific 24 kilometre-wide “count circle.” (The CBC4 Kids event covers less ground; Bauer’s is starting out in her bird-active backyard.) Each count, which must take place on one day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, is managed by a local “compiler.” Over time, the data gathered helps track population changes and distribution that as-

sist in bird conservation. All counts are based on volunteer effort and enthusiasm, explained Cameron Eckert, a director of the Yukon Bird Club. The club organizes the Yukon’s counts for the national lead, Bird Studies Canada. It’s easy to participate. Spend some time recording birds you see at your feeder, or watch for birds in assigned routes and neighbourhoods. And you can take part in any one or all of the counts. “This is something simple and enjoyable that anyone can do and one way to take action in this era of climate crisis,” Eckert said. The Audubon organization recently reported that two thirds of North America’s birds are at risk of extinction. In Whitehorse, the Christmas Bird Count takes place on Boxing Day. Last year, 25 species were observed by 45 participants with ravens and bohemian waxwings the most numerous species seen. Seasoned compiler Jim Hawkings manages routes within the city’s count circle, centred at the intersection of Two Mile Hill and the Alaska Highway. He helps assign or record birding results covering routes between Fish Lake and Grey Mountain, and McRae to Hidden Valley. (The Mil-

The Christmas Bird Count 4 Kids is a fun, family event aimed at getting kids outside to enjoy some birdwatching and connect with nature. Julie Bauer will lead local youth and leaders in this year’s event in Haines Junction on Dec. 14. Last year’s group (photo) had a great time lennium Trail in Riverdale, and the ski trails at Mt Mac are popular.) He’s also coordinating the Marsh Lake community event. It’s home to the territory’s longest running Christmas Bird Count, started in the mid-80s. If you don’t live in one of the official count areas, you can still observe and report your sightings, either on the Yukon Birds Facebook page, or on eBird, the international database for birders, Eckert said. And after a record warm fall, birdwatchers in Whitehorse may see rare or new species for a CBC, Eckert noted. There have been recent sightings of American crows,

pretty Eurasian collard doves and, in Riverdale, a purple finch. Another reason to take part? The counts are also a fun, social

time, with cookies and hot chocolate at the kids’ count, or perhaps a post-count pot-luck dinner. Happy birding! cont’d on page 9 ...

hat happens when you bring Elders, astronauts, visual artists and choirs together? If you’re Marten Berkman, you end up with a multiscreen stereo 3D video and sound installation that depicts an orchestration of the land with visual art, music and performance. Berkman’s Remote Sensibility VIII: the ecology of perception, listening to our elders, our astronauts, our artists , opens at the Yukon Arts Centre on Dec. 5. “I have been inspired by a lifelong love for and relationship with the land, an observation that our industrious nature currently orphans us from it, and the brilliant example of respect and inclusivity that the Peel watershed journey demonstrates about embracing the layers of meaning which overlap in it,” said Berkman. “By listening inclusively and sensitively to multiple perspectives, we arrive at the most resilient solutions. This is medicine for the world. “That is my inspiration on a pragmatic level, the pragmatism addressing the challenges we cur-

rently face. But ultimately I have been inspired by what I feel, the diverse perspectives reflected in the piece. These insights and sensibilities speak to the heart, and are like words in a larger poem or colours of a larger canvas I am inspired to bring to life.” Berkman hopes that his work will help create a perceptive and emotive bridge between his audience and the land. “I want to reflect the reality that we are connected to the land, no matter where we are,” he said. “I feel artists can be the mediators of that bridge, when the urban spaces we have created and the lifestyles that have evolved isolate us from so much of life, and the startling beauty and fragility of the earth.” In order to create the exhibit, Berkman needed to bring together a wide range of collaborators, his most ambitious collaboration to date. “Over a dozen artists and two choirs across four provinces and territories have participated, not to mention international contributions as well,” he said. “I am so grateful and humbled by these artists who have entrusted their work to my vision, and I am excited with what we express together.” cont’d on page 13 ...

Grace Simpson-Fowler, Talia Woodland and Karyin Qiu were early participants in Remote Sensibility, performing in Marten’s favorite stage: outside Although collaboration is intrinsic to the work of Remote Sensibility VIII, Berkman also values solitude in his artistic practice. “I often retreat to the land in solitude, it has been a refuge all my life,” he said. “And in solitude is where inner creativity has space to unfold. But there is such joy in sharing and collaboration adds the chemistry that can take us in unknown directions and that is the joy of adventure. I find sharing and supporting each other just lights the fire and fills the sails of our imperative need to create. Like the magic that can happen when melding imagery and music, it is amazing what beautiful chemistry happens when we collaborate with our respective mediums.” Remote Sensibility VIII: the ecology of perception, runs at the Yukon Arts Centre from Dec. 5 to Feb. 29.

n Dec. 14, Yukoners have the option to put some of their holiday shopping dollars towards the support of local entrepreneurs who are living with intellectual disabilities. Inclusion Yukon will host a Christmas Fair alongside its annual open house. “We wanted to create a barrier-free market where we could showcase people with diverse abilities and make a space for a more accessible Christmas market,” said Shonagh McCrindle, executive director of Inclusion Yukon. Inclusion Yukon, formally known as the Yukon Association for Community Living, aims to promote meaningful inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities and their families into all aspects of community life by providing advocacy, public awareness and education, community capacity development, and program support. Put more simply, it is

dedicated to including all people living in the Yukon in every walk of life. “We consider intellectual impairment or developmental delay as part of life’s diversity and a component of community to be included rather than excluded or hidden,” said McCrindle. “We seek to promote inclusion for individuals and families by finding ways to educate the public, inform professionals, and develop services and strategies. We also work in partnership with parents, government and other community agencies to provide opportunities for everyone to reach their potential and feel like they belong.” Inclusion Yukon tackles this work through a wide range of initiatives. “We focus on employment support, inclusion support, school transitions, advocacy, education to the public about diversity and education tailored to neuro-

diversity (neurological differences are to be recognized as any other human variation),” said McCrindle. “We also do personalized planning and an annual yard sale, and we always have a coffee pot on and love to chat with whoever walks through the door.” If you would like to try walking through that door on Dec. 14, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Inclusion Yukon offices in Suite 7 of the Yukon Inn Plaza. If you would like to learn more about Inclusion Yukon in general, including how to volunteer or donate to support their work, check out InclusionYukon.org Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Blue Collar North with Carey Marshall

Bombardier Channel

The MacKenzie River Road serves as the winter road to Tuk

“Almost everybody has seen ice road stories on Ice Road Truckers. What most people don’t realize is the problems that can occur in the initial opening of ice roads. All northerners should tip their hats to the crews that get the ice prepared for safe driving. I dedicate this story to Dusty Carruthers who drowned in a Bombardier in Tuk harbor about a decade ago.” - Carey

think we all had pictures that we have lost that spoke a thousand words. I know I’ve had a few. The picture I’m remembering today happened in 1976 in Inuvik. It was the picture of a Dodge truck encased in a block of ice almost three feet thick, being dragged down the street. It was December of that year and I worked for Northstar Construction, which was owned by Gordie Campbell. Northstar had the contract to open and maintain the ice roads to Aklavik and Tuktoyuktuk. Just before the middle of December, we headed out with a Bombardier to check the thickness

of the ice. We would shovel the snow off a patch of ice and drill the ice with a 12-volt auger. We had no set pattern for drilling and just relied on experience from previous winters to try find the thin spots. Knowing what I know now, it was very rudimentary. For the past couple of winters, they had been having trouble with thin ice on a few river curves about 10 miles north of Inuvik, on the east branch of the Mackenzie River. The NWT government and Northstar came to a decision to try a new route. The new route, which was called Bombardier Channel, branched off to the left,

five miles north of Inuvik. The drilling results showed the ice would be okay for light snow-clearing equipment. Snow is the best insulator in the world, so the key is to get the ice cleared with smaller equipment and once the ice is cleared, it will freeze quickly. Two days after we had tested the ice, we started clearing the snow with a Dodge power wagon driven by Dusty. Gordie and I followed the power wagon with another truck. It took around 20 minutes for the plow truck to reach the Bombardier Channel. It was slow going, cont’d on page 19 ...

together so the bar would be long enough to cut through the ice. I was completely green in this field of work, but even I knew that everything we did wasn’t going to work out as planned. The one thing I knew for certain was with Willie and Dusty on the job, that truck would get rescued. As soon as we arrived at the site, we got to work clearing the snow off the ice and started to cut the ice all around the truck with the chainsaw. It was a big job. The ice also had to be smashed at both ends of the truck, so chains could be hooked to the front and back of the frozen hulk. Hooking the chains up required putting our bare arms into the water, which was a unique experience at 30 degrees below. Finally at around 2 a.m., we were ready to lift the truck. Dusty would winch from the back end, while Willie backed into the right front side and hooked up to the front end of the power wagon. Well, here goes nothing. Both trucks started to winch at once and the power wagon started to lift. We soon discovered that trying to get the bottom of the ice block up over the channel ice was a big problem. The more Dusty lifted the back end to clear the ice, the more it tipped Willie’s truck sideways. Dusty kept winching little by little, and Willie’s truck kept tipping little by little. A few more tugs with the winch and the bottom of the ice on the power wagon was almost there. Willie’s truck was almost ready to tip over, the driver’s side wheels four feet in the air. Dusty gave it one more tug and just as the bottom of the ice block slid up on the channel’s ice, CRASH! Wil-

PHOTO: Wikimedia Commons / MJ Preston lie’s truck flopped over on its passenger side. With the power wagon pulled out on the ice, Willie and Dusty got Willie’s flopped truck back on its wheels. The only damage the truck had was a broken mirror. While they were doing their thing, I started covering the power wagon with two parachutes. Once the truck was covered, we started to pump heat around the block of ice, with two 150,000 BTU master heaters. After an hour, we checked to see how the melting was progressing. The ice was melting at a snail’s pace, and half an hour later, one heater quit. We had no luck getting the heater to work again, so it was time to make a new game plan. They decided to drag the power wagon to town, ice and all. We hooked Dusty’s truck to the power wagon and loaded up all the equipment and tools. Finally at 8:30 a.m., we were ready to leave to town. It had been a long cold dark day. While I learned a ton of things from these guys, I picked up some bad habits also. If this incident had happened today, we would have put reflective barriers all around the open hole in the ice. There would also be reflective signs put up on both ends of the hole. We just left the site open all morning. If a snow-mobiler had come ripping through, the operator would have had an unexpected New Year’s dip.

but we were moving. We were nearly two miles up the channel, when all of a sudden, the back end of the power wagon dropped and came to a stop. Dusty tried to move again, but the back end dropped more. Nothing more could be done, so we shut the truck off and got out. We were standing around assessing the situation, when the whole truck fell through the ice. Luckily it wasn’t very deep. The water only came up to the bottom of the windows. The only thing left to do was head back to town. We would have to wait for the ice to get thicker before an attempt could be made to get the truck out. Three days later, Gordie and I returned to the site with the Bombardier. He wanted to test the ice on the far left side to see if there was enough ice to get around the sunken truck. I got out the shovel and cleared the snow off the ice. Gordie set the auger on the patch of ice I had just cleared and pulled the trigger. WUH-WUH-WUHTHUNK! The water came gushing up, HOLY S#&T, there’s less than two inches of ice, let’s get the F&*k out of here. For the next 10 days, the weather got much colder and it was time to rescue the power wagon. In the morning, just before New Year’s, Dusty, Willie and I headed out to the site of the sunken Dodge. We had two small gin pole trucks and a skid shack that had a generator to supply heat and light. Inuvik in December has 20 hours of darkness and four hours of dusk. With so much darkness, every job takes longer to get done. Early in the morning, Dusty welded two chainsaw bars

s long as I remember, I’ve travelled throughout the Mackenzie Delta and Beaufort Coast with my dad. We travelled all over during different seasons hunting or trapping different animals. Though my parents had moved to town from the trap-line, that primal instinct to hunt and trap never left them. And they took us kids everywhere with them during that time. Sure, they could have raised us on pork chops and potatoes, but they wanted us to learn how to make a living off the land for ourselves. I remember one time I was bitching to my dad after walking for hours through the foothills looking for caribou. His response was, “One day you’re gonna thank me.” Now I get it. Though I didn’t know it, I was learning to “read” the land. I started noticing when the land was changing, that different animals, plants, fish and birds were also changing. They were either arriving, mating, laying eggs, molting, or migrating either north or south. Some guys are so good they know damned near to the day when the first flock of snowgeese show up in the springtime. The seasons became one cycle after another. And over time, it was like reading a favorite book that

The landscape of the Mackenzie Delta Mackenzie Delta. At first it was just a few, but I could tell they were different. And after a while, I’d see bigger and bigger patches along the river. Then it was the slumping of the islands on the Beaufort Coast. Again, it didn’t register what was actually happening, but I noticed it. Especially on our island, Baby Island, where

extended hundreds of feet out into the ocean. Now that beach has been replaced by a wall of rip rap boulders that had to be placed there to prevent the storm surges from eroding the shoreline. Some residents wonder why the powers that be have not built proper surge protectors, or wave baffles, but it looks like it’s too late. When people use the term Mother Earth, it’s pretty close to the truth. Because in the North, it is like your mother. Especially in small, isolated Indigenous communities where they still depend on the land to sustain them. The caribou, moose, seal, walrus, polar bear and fur-bearing animals feed and clothe the people. They harvest migratory birds, net fish in the lakes and streams, pick berries, and gather roots and tree sap for medicine. Their relationship with the land and water is an intimate one. If we as a human race, are going to survive the ravages of rapid and destructive climate change, then the western world needs to adopt a different world view. Because as it stands, their relationship with the land was severed when they quit being foragers (an anthropological term for cultures which gather food and sustenance from the land) and began to master the universe by unlocking its secrets. If we could all learn to live with less, then perhaps we as a species have a chance of survival. But time will tell.

I saw these beautiful mule deer does on the side of the Alaska Highway south of the Carcross Cut-off on October 17th. Hopefully the recent right-of-way clearing on the sides of the highway will keep the deer further from the edge of pavement. Camera: Nikon D7200

Moose sausages

season here, my buddy James, an avid hunter, invited me over to learn how to make sausages. The first step was cutting up the moose meat (a beautiful dark purple) and cutting out any tendon or tough fat. Next step was laying it out on a flat surface and adding a fat source. Moose is a very fit and fatless animal, so we opted for extra fatty bacon. Next step was fresh blueberries from the B.C. Fruit Stall, with some salt and pepper. Laying the meat out flat ensures that every piece gets some bacon and blueberries on it. Next step was the first grind. My job was putting the meat in and pushing it down into the grinder and James was grabbing it and moving it to make more. The first grind was a success. Before the next grind, we checked the flavour of the sausage meat. James took a small amount and dipped it in maple syrup and fried it up. It was delicious, but needed some more spice. We laid it out again flat and put more spices on the sausages, this time more salt and pepper, and paprika with chili flakes. We also

added the secret, most Canadian ingredient: maple syrup. Then it was grind number two. It was tricky the second time, getting the meat into the grinder hole and squishing it in. James put the sausage skin on. As the meat was going through and filling the skin, it looked like intestines forming. Once all the meat was in the sausage skin, it was time to make them like sausages. Squeezing the meat and rolling it to make the most delicious breakfast sausages. With poached eggs, hash browns and english muffins, the sausages made a delicious addition to a fall breakfast in the Yukon.
