et’s face it, some folks get really ramped up about the season of festive excess that descends upon us every December. For many of them (even you, if I may be so bold), holiday prep starts months in advance. In extreme cases, as early as Boxing Day of the previous calendar year. Even the slackest of yuletide fanatics seems to hit warp speed about the time our American cousins mark Thanksgiving and, more important, the annual spending orgies known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Let me be clear: these are not my people. Consider me your basic, white-

bread Canadian male Geezer, who buys nothing before Dec. 20, and stubbornly insists yuletide decorations should only be displayed from Christmas Eve until the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6. (Gregorian calendar.) But this year, for some inexplicable reason, I found myself toying with the notion of making an early start. Specifically, I’ve been thinking about purchasing a real, live (meaning dead, but not man-made) Christmas tree, even while it was only November. Full disclosure: it’s been years since I’ve bought and decorated an actual Christmas tree. You know, the kind that smells terrific for a few days, then turns

stiff and brittle and sheds needles enough to burn out the motor of the most rugged Dyson. There were the years of basement apartments and borrowed rooms, when my offspring (and offsprings’ offspring) lived provinces away and seasonal cheer felt inappropriate. Sacrificing even a tiny once-living tree seemed like an outrage. Enter Herself, some seven years ago. A personage whose heritage included a mere soupçon of Christian tradition, plus a dollop of Judaism, a welter of Wicca and a pinch of Buddhism for good measure. cont’d on page 3 ...

It’s beginning to look a lot like shopping ... cont’d Each year, she and her daughter faithfully light their menorahs for eight nights, play dreidels and overcook mountains of starchy latkes. They burn scores of candles to the nub while chittering through the night of winter solstice. They recover just in time to put overstuffed stockings under a tiny cardboard tree and shove an overstuffed turkey into the oven.

Friends or strangers of any religious persuasion, or none, are welcome for drinks and snacks, for conversation, music and laughter. For mistletoe, apples, pomegranates and ivy. For latkes with applesauce and sour cream. And Scotch eggs. And dreidels. Because that’s how we roll in these parts. But this year, dammit, there will also be a Christmas tree. A real one, five feet tall a minimum of five feet tall. One that grew in real dirt and sacrificed its nonplastic, non-metallic needles for our sake. That’s just me, putting my white-bread Geezer foot down.

Murray was surprised to find the rabies virus on bats in 1959 when he worked on a project in Quebec

I Wishing you a HAPPY HOLIDAYS from my family to yours. Hon. Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament, Yukon 204-204 Black Street, Whitehorse, YT, Y1A 2M9 Tel: (867) 668-6565, Email: larry.bagnell.c1@parl.gc.ca

n the late 1950s, the infectious disease known as “rabies” worked its way eastward across Canada. All warm-blooded creatures, including humans, are susceptible to the rabies virus that will lead to deadly acute encephalitis. In 1959 I was detailed to work on the disease in eastern Ontario. My principal responsibility was to capture as many samples of live bats in the eastern counties and take them to a lab in Quebec where I also examined the bat for any insects etc., it might have on its body. I was truly surprised to see little infectious creatures attached to the bat’s body because bats are one of the cleanest crea-

tures I had ever come across. The bat is not the only mammal that is susceptible to this deadly disease. The skunk, raccoon, foxes and coyote are high on the list of mammals known to get rabies, as well as the dog. The actual transporting of rabies is done through the saliva of one mammal to the other. The caution here is that this does not only mean through a bite, but through the saliva of the animal’s mouth. This means that rabies can be spread by licking. It should be made clear that touching other parts of the body, such as membranes, including the eyes, nose and mouth, could lead to the spread of the disease.

Using the raccoon as an example, if having come in contact with a rabid animal and been bitten, go to a doctor or medical clinic immediately and report the incident. The disease will take anywhere from three to 12 weeks to incubate. During that time, the bitten raccoon may show no signs of being rabid aka biting things. In some cases, what thy call dumb rabies might show and the biting animal may wander rather stupidly, biting even at sticks. This is why rules are in place against feeding wild animals. ing the animal to rely on humans to feed them, another concern is that these wild creatures could be infected with this deadly disease. Remember, a WILD ANIMAL IS WILD! When the disease finally reaches the brain, the virus multiplies exceptionally rapidly and passes through the salivary glands. At this point, chances are that the animal will not live more than a week. This is when you will note that the wild animal seems friendly to people. Do not be fooled by this as this is a sign that the wild animal could possibly have rabies.

If you see a wild animal dead on the side of the road, do not touch it, as it could well end up being infected with this disease. If you see an animal dead on the side of the road or in fact anywhere, call a conservation officer. Do not touch it. All of the above is reason enough to have your dog inoculated with the rabies vaccine. The vaccine will be good for three years. Remember, an animal does not have to be bitten by an animal infected with rabies. Just coming in contact with its mouth or body could transport this deadly disease of rabies. In

taking your dog across the border into the USA, you must show a veterinarian’s paper showing inoculation certification or they will not allow you to cross the border. In many communities across Canada, all dogs must be inoculated with the rabies vaccine. It is not only wise to stop the spread of this deadly diseases to other animals, but to the protection of all people. Murray Martin is a former Ontario conservation officer and a longstanding member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.

PROFILES

Carpentry Apprentice

Current Workplace: Ketza Construction What motivated you to get into this career?

I have always been into handson work, but what truly motivated me was, when I was 16 I had a boyfriend that said I couldn’t help change the oil in my truck because I was a girl. From then on, I had my heart set on trades work.

Was there someone who got you excited about this path?

Honestly, aside from my sister and parents, I was the one who was super excited about this path in the trades.

Was there secondary helped you cient at the now?

Cassandra enjoys the physically active nature of trades work

Cassandra gets on the tools

a class in school that more profiwork you do

I had taken shop class in high school, but I didn’t do very well in that subject, but that didn’t stop me from pursuing my career!

What was it like to go to post secondary school and work at the same time?

It was hard. Young, single mom, going to school and working at the same time. It was difficult. BUT if you really want something, you’ll find a way to make it happen.

What is the best part of being in your trade?

The best part of my trade is definitely the physical labour involved. Lifting materials, on my feet all day. I love it. You get paid to work out.

A regular day would look something like... • Safety Meeting. • Work Hard! • Giggle a little. (Have to have fun at work!) • Work even harder. • Clean up and prep for the next day.

A piece of advice that I would give to someone looking to get into the trade?

Show up on time and be willing to learn! This trade has so many different avenues. You could do finish work, forming, framing, cabinets. There is always something to learn!

If you met someone who was looking at getting a job in the trades, what piece of advice would you give them?

Carpentry has made my life better by giving me a job I love. I don’t dread getting up in the morning and am happy to go to a job

PHOTOS: courtesy of Skills Canada Yukon

Cassandra feels a big key to trades is always be willing to learn I like with a crew that feels like family.

What is the most interesting thing/project you

have worked on?

Every job is interesting! Hardly ever do you get a job that’s the exact same, so they’re all interesting!

Here’s Our Lineup METHOD

Slice pork belly on the bias to create a crosshatch pattern, season liberally with salt. Place seasoned pork, peppercorns, star anise, ginger and garlic in a pressure cooker, skin side up. Add water so that it reaches 3/4 up the side of the pork belly, close the pressure cooker and cook under high pressure for 30 minutes. The pork should easily yield to a knife; if it doesn’t place it back in the pressure cooker for 20 minutes intervals until it does.

2

Set the oven to 425 degrees, place the pork on a roasting pan and roast for 15 minutes. Then switch the oven to broil and broil the belly under high heat until it’s crisp - in a preheated oven this should take 5 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing and serving. This preparation of pork belly works well with simple sliced radishes and herbs on sourdough bread, with a decent spread of mayo and a few dashes of fish sauce.

Vegan and vegetarian focused Kind Cafe is helping customers with restricted diets eat out by Emily Hoefs

hatever we do, there is always room for a little kindness. That was the

message I took away after meeting with Meg Rodger at her new eatery, Kind Café, on Hawkins Street in downtown Whitehorse. The crowd, menu, smooth operation and carefully curated space belie a business opened just three months prior. Everything feels homey and well established; some customers are already calling themselves “regulars.” Rodger, 28, credits that to a supportive community (she was born and raised in Whitehorse and is delighted that many guests and employees are friends and family) and the countless hours she spent carefully planning a space to call her own. The Kind Café is a dream six years in the making. Following the completion of a degree in business manage-

ment, Rodger spent time teaching in South Korea and traveling to different areas of Asia. There, she was inspired by two things: a variety of ingredients and food combinations new to her, and a deep appreciation of the pristine environment she’d grown up with in the Yukon. “I remember walking to work in South Korea and not being able to see the cars on the street from the sidewalk because of the smog. It made me look at the bigger picture” she said. Around the same time in her life, Rodger started to take seriously some food sensitivities she’d always experienced. “As a kid I just would not eat dairy. I’d reject it without knowing why. As I got older, I was able to start recognising, ok, if this

food doesn’t make me feel good, I can make different choices.” Dealing with a restricted diet can take some of the pleasure out of eating, with some taking on the mindset that food is an enemy. Rodger said it doesn’t have to be so. “There’s so much guilt and confusion out there about food. I wanted to show people that food can bring you comfort and still be healthy. You can feel satiated without feeling badly afterwards,” she said. Rodger began experimenting in her own kitchen, devouring food blogs and discovering alternatives and substitutions for traditional fare via specialty cookbooks. “I really just wanted to bring more kindness everywhere. I wanted to

make my dream into something that was kind for people, animals and the Earth.” The Kind Café offers mostly vegan and vegetarian fare, typically free of gluten, refined sugar and other common ingredients known to affect eaters with sensitivities. However, Rodger has purposely not marketed her business as such because she feels that can send a message of restriction. She strives to offer items that are always healthy and delicious, without judgment. “I want to meet people where they already are in their diets and food journeys. You can come here and find something you will enjoy, regardless of what you normally eat.” It seems her approach is workcont’d on page 15 ...

Although not marketed, the menu offers mostly healthy and tasty vegan and vegetarian dishes ing, as customers stream continuously through the small and welcoming ground floor space. Rodger finds this immensely satisfying as she admits she “lived and breathed the concept” for years. her creations on social media. In fact, business has been so good that she admits she hasn’t yet had time to reflect on the fact that she is living her dream. A good problem to have, she said, crediting her team for their support and sharing her feeling of being personally invested in their mis-

sion to serve up delicious food, with a side of kindness. Emily Hoefs is a soccer player, coach and enthusiast, as well as a writer. She lives in Whitehorse with her son and too many dogs.

The many of voices of “Canadiana”

The Problematic Orchestra performs last year at their annual concert

The Problematic Orchestra is ready for its fourth solstice show by Carrie Boles

“I

t’s really subjective.” That’s how Daniel Janke describes this year’s theme for the Problematic Orchestra. On the longest night of the year, Yukon’s very own chamber orchestra will take the stage at the Yukon Arts Centre for a musical exploration of the theme “Canadiana.” For director Janke, who grew up listening to bands like April Wine, A Foot in Coldwater, Major Hoople’s Boarding House Band and, later, the likes of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, “Canadiana”

might just equate to southern Ontario. However; the night will include compositions from British Columbia-based composers John Oliver and David Archer; a composition called “Ice Forms” by Katrina Gimon (which Janke calls a “beautiful, sonic piece”); and a collaboration with Kwanlin Dághàlhaan K’e Dancers described as “epic.” The evening will also be dominated by local musicians and composers. Seasoned musician Keitha Clark will play for the first time with the Problematic Orchestra and has written her own piece, an adaption of a well-known fiddle tune by the famous Metis musician John Arcand. Clark’s take on the theme includes this ode to the region of her birth in Saskatchewan. Clark uses the piece to segue into the story of Big Bear—a Cree chief—who refused to sign treaty, believing the agreements to be unbeneficial to his people. Big Bear subsequently faced much hardship and, as he had predicted, his eventual signature on Treaty 6 proved not viable to his nation. “My family farmed part of this treaty land, where Big Bear and his people are from,” she said. “I view my piece as adding another voice to the conversation on what it means to be Canadian.” For Clark, the theme “is a musical dialogue to get us thinking about the music that comes from

Canada, it wants us to engage, not just intellectually, but through what music does best, with our emotions,” she said. “We are very lucky for a community of this size to have an orchestra to both play and write for and, as a community, to have a chamber orchestra in the North,” Clark said. Joan Stanton, producer of Problematic Orchestra, echoed that sentiment. “We have our very own chamber orchestra, with a very accomplished group of musicians. I would encourage people to come out and experience it! The range of Canadian music we are going to hear at the concert, is something to look forward to,” she said. When probed about what “surprise arrangements” of Canadian classics to expect, director Janke said “then it would not be a surprise!” “Again, everyone has a different idea of Canada, even different generations, we tried to touch on ideas that were enduring. I might have mentioned Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, but also within the theme, we will explore the cultural fabric and the land as part of the country,” he said. The Problematic Orchestra will play at the Yukon Art Centre Mainstage Friday Dec. 20 and Saturday Dec. 21. Carrie Boles finally finds the dark, not so DARK.

When the community comes together, Christmas magic is possible

Due to the help of many people, Garbage Truck Santa will bring holiday cheer to Yukoners this December by Amber Church

S

ince 1991, Wayne Henderson, aka Garbage Truck Santa, has delighted Yukoners with his colourful light displays, dancing antlers, music and gifts of candy canes. Now, due to the support of the community, Henderson can feel confident that his garbage truck will keep bringing joy throughout the holiday season for years to come. Henderson first donned his Santa suit for the benefit of the kids along his garbage route. “Every Thursday, when I drove through Riverdale there would be this little boy waiting for me,” he said. “Seeing how excited he was to see the garbage truck gave me an idea; I walked into my manager’s office at the City of Whitehorse and asked what he thought

about me doing my route in a Santa suit, with candy canes for the kids.” His manager told him to go for it. Pretty soon, Garbage Truck Santa’s popularity grew well beyond initial expectations. “It wasn’t that long before we found ourselves with a bit of a problem– everywhere I went we would have kids running around the truck and getting too close, and delays to the schedule due to photographs and people wanting to visit with me,” Henderson said. “Ultimately Ron, my supervisor, just told me to start driving around during the period just before Christmas and not to worry about picking up the garbage.” “It was during this time that I started to add lights to the truck,” he said. The truck’s light display has grown exponentially since then. Every year, Henderson adds more lights to the display, helped along by donations from Canadian Tire. “When I started I could power everything by wiring the lights into the cigarette lighter, but it wasn’t too long before I needed a generator in the back to keep everything powered.” Garbage Truck Santa rode under the city’s banner for about 20 years, until the city updated its fleet of garbage trucks. The city wasn’t able to accommodate the light display with the new model of trucks and Henderson had to miss a year as his alter ego of the

jolly old elf. Tina Woodland, from Whitehorse Motors, came up with a solution. “She called me up and said ‘if we find you a new garbage truck will you start bring Garbage Truck Santa back?’” said Henderson. “Of course I said yes.” The Takhini Trailer Court had a truck it was willing to lend for a week a year. For the last while, that arrangement has ensured that Garbage Truck Santa makes it through his holiday rounds. But last year the transmission on the truck went. The trailer court sold it to Henderson for a dollar and Henderson was left trying to figure out how to get the vehicle repaired so that the community wouldn’t be disappointed by the absence of his brightly-lit vehicle on Whitehorse’s streets during December. It was at this point that the community banded together to create a Christmas miracle. A GoFundMe campaign kicked off to help with the expenses. Phil from Inland Kenworth, Keith from Pelly Construction, Ross from Mercer Construction, the teams at Whitehorse Motors and KalTire, and Doug McRae and his students at Yukon College banded together. Between them, they arranged to tow the garbage truck to where it could be worked on; sourced and installed a new transmission; put new tires on the truck, undertook a complete inspection; installed an inverter to power

Wayne Henderson has become a beloved Whitehorse Christmas tradition as Garbage Truck Santa the light display; licensed and insured the vehicle; and provided a place to store it year-round. “I’ve been so overwhelmed by people trying to help,” said Henderson. “The businesses in this town are so community minded– everywhere I turned there was someone offering to help.” McRae, who volunteered his heavy equipment technician program students to take care of the basic safety maintenance that is required of all commercial vehicles, explained his drive to help. “I have always believed that events similar to what Wayne does are a part of what defines a community and need to be encouraged and supported whenever we can.” The garbage truck is now ready to roll out for the upcoming holiday season. A team of elves will take over Whitehorse Motors in mid-December to install the light display in time for Garbage Truck Santa’s first scheduled appearance of the season on Dec. 16. Over that week, Henderson will visit three schools a day between

Monday and Thursday. In between, he will visit as many daycares and seniors’ residences as possible. “Not many people volunteer to wear a Santa suit for 10 hours a day,” he laughed. “I hope the temperature drops a bit–it’s a pretty hot suit.” When he’s not paying visits to excited youngsters and the youngat-heart, he can be found driving the streets of Whitehorse, or at Whitehorse Motors, where the truck will live during that week. Looking to the future, Yukoners can expect to have garbage truck Santa bringing a smile to faces for years to come. “I want to make it to 30 years,” said Henderson. “And then when I’m ready to retire, I’ll pass the torch to my son Ryan. It takes a person with a good heart to do this and he has that.” Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Däna Näye

Ventures is about to celebrate 35 years of supporting Yukon entrepreneurs

or more than the past three decades, Däna Näye Ventures has helped Yukon businesses succeed. Now, on the eve of the organization’s 35th anniversary, it has been honoured by Startup Canada for its entrepreneurial efforts. “We had the great privilege of receiving the Startup Canada Award for Entrepreneurial Support for our efforts in 2018/19,” said Logan Freese, Däna Näye Ventures manager of financial services. “This is awarded to an individual or organization that provides the highest level of support and care for its clients. It was an amazing honour to be recognized as being the regional winner and to have been in contention for the national award.” Although Däna Näye didn’t bring home the national award, Freese stresses that having its ef-

Logan Freese (left), general manager Elaine Chambers and Donna Moore, manager, business services, accept the Startup Canada Award for Entrepreneurial Support for 2018/19 forts recognized on the national scale was still amazing. Däna Näye is an aboriginallycontrolled financial institution that can provide business financing, advisory, and support and training services, as well as funding support to all Yukon and Northern British Columbia-based entrepreneurs. “Däna Näye is able to provide support to entrepreneurs at any stage of their business whether it be startup, expansion, acquisition or even sun-setting or selling their business,” said Freese. “These opportunities can range from small-

scale start-ups, or hobby businesses up to large development or infrastructure projects. “Our financing programs cover everything from a startup microloan for $3,000 to very large lending projects which have run into the millions of dollars.” Däna Näye’s ability to be flexible by providing creative financing options for a variety of businesses over time has allowed Däna Näye to remain a key player in the Yukon. “Some of our greatest successes have been in providing financing options to businesses that would not have been able to access financing elsewhere,” said Freese. “A lot of these businesses have gone on to become great successes and valuable and contributing members of the Yukon economy. These businesses have ranged from small individual startups, to acquisitions of existing businesses, to large development corporations that were recovering from past mismanagement. It has always been a point of pride for our entire organization, from front-line staff on up to board of directors and members, to be able to go to local businesses across the territory and know that they have played some part in that business’ success.” Moving forward, Däna Näye hopes to continue to grow its programs and services to be able to better serve its clients and the Yukon entrepreneurial system as a whole. This growth will include seeking out new opportunities to expand its scope with new funding and financing programs, training projects, course development and partnering opportunities. “One of the biggest and most exciting new projects that we have on the go is the development of providing a mortgage lending

system that is available to Yukon residents for First Nation settlement lands that are to be leased and developed (Category A/B settlement land),” said Freese. “This new project will hopefully alleviate some of the financial constraints and burdens that current mortgaging programs have on the First Nations entities themselves and allow individual proponents leasing the lands a chance to build equity into their own home.” For those interested in getting involved with Däna Näye Ventures, Freese said the company is always willing to take on new clients and that the easiest way to become a new client is to schedule an appointment to have a conversation to find out just how Däna Näye can help. “Even if we aren’t able to provide the direct assistance, we’re always willing to help the best way that we can by acting as a referral agent or simply making an introduction to someone who can,” said Freese. “We always encourage those that are thinking about making the leap to entrepreneurship to come in and talk to us to find out as much information as possible to ensure that you’re making the right choice at the right time. There’s a lot to consider about being your own boss and we always want to make sure that those that are willing to take that risk are making the correct and informed decision about how to go about doing things the right way to better increase your odds of success.” Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Popcorn Wisdom with Dave Blottner

Netflix and Christmas A review by Dave Blottner

Well folks, with the holidays fast descending upon us and many lamenting the lack of a decent theatre in the Yukon, I know what you’re all thinking—how am I going to get my movie fix? Don’t worry, with all the streaming services that exist today, one need never leave home to get their share of movies, both new and old. This year I took a dive into the Netflix catalogue to see what they could offer for holiday cheer and here is what I came up with.

Christmas Break-In Christmas Break-In is a 2019 movie directed by Michael Kampa and starring Danny Glover and Cameron Seely. I had the privilege of watching it as my introduction into the world of Netflix holiday movies and what can I really say about it? This movie is a lot of special. I kind of feel that Danny Glover (I kid you not, Danny Glover is in this) was stuck between flights at an airport and just decided to bang out this movie while he was there. The premise is that three robbers rob all the coins and a fur coat from a Salvation Army Thrift Shop. Yes you read that correctly. Their haul was two sacks full of quarters. With this, they intend to retire in Acapulco, but while attempting to drive there, they get lost in a snowstorm. Meanwhile, a pair of terrible parents forget their nine-year-old daughter at school just as the Christmas break begins. For reasons not entirely made clear, the robbers also stop at this school and the child and the janitor (Danny Glover) must fight off the robbers using discount Home Alone-style antics. This movie offers everything the above premise sounds like it’s going to offer. The acting is terrible, the characters cartoonish and ridiculous, the in-movie logic is almost non-existent. It’s bad, folks. It may be one of the worst holiday movies I have ever watched. That being said, it’s a special ‘so

bad it’s almost good again’ movie. This could be a very solid Christmas movie for you to sit down and rip apart with some friends while lamenting how far Danny Glover has fallen in his acting career. I can’t say it was good, but I can say I had a good time with it. If that sounds like your particular cup of egg nog, check it out! This movie gets 2 out of 5 candy canes.

Christmas with the Kranks The next stop on my holiday tour was 2004’s Christmas with the Kranks. Directed by Joe Roth and starring Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd. Sigh. This was hard to watch because 2004 feels like it was a very different time and the movie just doesn’t hold up that well. On one hand, you have Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd. Heck, there’s even that annoying kid from Malcolm in the Middle! The starstudded cast knows their trade, the lines are delivered well, the chemistry is decent between them and they are skilled enough to play off each other. On the other hand, I just can’t get behind the premise. Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis are sad because their daughter joined the peace corps and won’t be home for Christmas. They opt to go on a cruise instead of doing the regular Christmas stuff that makes them feel depressed. They let their friends know that they

Break-In was so bad it was good, this movie was awkward and lacked the heart of a solid holiday special. This movie gets 1 sticky candy cane wrapper out of 5 candy canes. Definitely skip it.

won’t be doing Christmas this year in order to save money to go on a cruise. Then the entire neighborhood proceeds to bully them and torture them for not participating in Christmas. Everyone comes off as shallow and cruel in this movie and the movie never really turns it around to give you that heartwarming Christmas feeling that we all wait for in act three of any holiday show. Looking deeper into this I found it was based on a John Grisham novel called Skipping Christmas. This has made me morbidly curious if this was some kind of dark horror about a community turning on people when they stop celebrating Christmas, or a weird community with a Christmas cult in it. The movie is played for laughs, but it could just as easily have been played darker and that might have made for a far more interesting movie. Whereas Christmas

Arthur Christmas

Will You Be The Next EDITOR ? For Do you

Up next, 2011’s Arthur Christmas, directed by Sarah Smith and Barry Cook, starring James McAcoy, Jim Broadbent and Bill Nighy. This might just be one of my alltime favourite Christmas movies. It is fresh, funny, delightful and heartwarming, all in just 97 minutes. The premise is that Santa’s clumsy son Arthur discovers a child was missed during operation Christmas, an operation conducted mostly by Arthur’s older brother Steve with ultra-high tech gizmos and navy seal-style elves. Santa, who is being pushed to retire by Steve, (who wants his job) ignores the issue, as does Steve who says it’s “good enough.” This leaves poor Arthur and an elf from the wrapping division to help save Christmas for this one little girl. movie has spectacular animation and a great soundtrack, but what I love about it is how it tackles the big topics. It looks at family, work, how we can disagree with someone and still love them, and it takes a deep, hard look at what Christmas is really all about. This movie is perfect for the entire family to sit down and enjoy together, but if you don’t have kids, there is plenty there for adults to enjoy too. This movie gets 5 out of 5 candy canes. The perfect addition to any holiday list!

The Christmas Chronicles Last, but not least we have 2018’s Christmas Chronicles directed by Clay Kaytis and starring Kurt Russell, Darby Camp and Judah Lewis. What to say about this movie? It’s campy, but just the right mix of camp and heart to make it a movie that will likely become a classic. A sister and brother have lost faith in Santa after their firefighter father passed away the previous year. Their mother has to work the night shift on Christmas Eve and they awake to meet Santa, as played by Kurt Russell. This isn’t your ordinary Santa, no this Santa is annoyed that everyone thinks he is fat. This Santa likes to bend the rules and play the blues and, through a wild series of wacky adventures, he and the two kids manage to save Christmas and get some closure about their lost father. This movie has some great music, and plenty of jokes that will keep the adults entertained. It does, however, go down an odd cul-de-sac in the middle involving CGI elves that are more akin to Pixar’s Minions than anything else. All in all, it is great fun for the entire family and worth with watching. This movie gets 3.5 out of 4 shiny candy canes. Well, there you have it folks, your Netflix Christmas rundown. Whatever your holiday style is, from romance, to comedy to drama, there is something there for everyone. Grab a cup of cider and a gingerbread cookie, cuddle up under a blanket and, from all of us here at What’s Up Yukon, have a safe and happy holiday season. Grey Matters with Susan Clark

The big rock W

hen I began to walk my dog this morning, I noticed that she had a slight limp and was favouring her right front leg. I thought that it would be better to stay on the level trail and have a somewhat shorter walk than usual. We would only go as far as the big rock. As those words came into my thoughts, a whole scene flashed into my mind. “The Big Rock!” “Let’s meet at the Big Rock!” “Don’t tell your little brother!” “Bring cookies!” At the end of the short street I grew up on was a field. It stretched from the edge of the subdivision where I lived to the new shopping centre accessed from another road. The other two sides of the field were bounded by a steep, wooded drop to a school yard on one side and the early preparation for the 401 highway on the other. It was a place of wildness close to home where we were allowed to play unsupervised. The big rock lay approximately in the centre of this field of rocks and weeds and discarded construction materials. In my memory, the rock was enormous and very unique. One side met the ground in a gradual slope and then rose to a dangerous height on the other side, forming an overhang. The overhang provided a cave-like place that could be turned into a secret hideout, a fort, a house, or even the cabin of a pirate ship. Scrambling to the top, we had a lookout for enemies (or perhaps parents). We scavenged bits of

scrap wood and rusty pieces of metal to make the walls. This was Canadian Shield country, so the big rock was probably granite. There were shiny bits in it, convincing us that our rock contained treasure. If not gold, then at least silver. When we huddled under the overhang inside our walls of rusty tin, we were in a completely different world. There were adventures and games and varying alliances, sometimes fights between factions of neighbourhood kids, depending on the day. We were mostly eight to 10-year-olds. During the summer, as long as we showed up for mealtimes and when the street lights came on, we could pretty much do as we liked. We hid our bikes in the bushes at the edge of the field so we couldn’t easily be found and also because there were bits of glass and bent nails that could wreck our tires on the winding paths that led to the Big Rock. As the street lights winked on, we reluctantly headed home with dirty hands and faces, scratches and bruises. Forced into the bathtub and then to lay sleepless, on top of sticky sheets in the southern Ontario humidity, I would plan ideas for tomorrow at the Big Rock. In reality the big rock was significant for only one or two sum-

m e r s before it became “kid stuff” that was left to little sisters and brothers. When I started high school, the field became just a short cut: across the field, through the shopping centre, then the overpass across the highway to the new high school. I remember in about grade 11 giving the big rock a glance in passing. How had it become so small? A few years later, returning from university in another city, I saw that the field was being turned into streets and new houses. Traffic was zinging along the 401 high-

way in the summer evenings. There was no sign of the big rock. Sometimes I wonder if it was that rock that began my fascination with rocks. Wherever I travel, I pick up rocks that attract me, not as big as “The Big Rock,” of course. They remind me of places and experiences. Our house is full of rocks. At times, rocks of various sizes and colours have been on window sills, in baskets, and even as a centrepiece on the dining room table. I have banished some to adorn the flower beds or join the gravel area that now replaces grass in our front yard. (More rocks.) I have loved the feel of climbing on the rock face of “The Chief”

in Squamish, B.C., where tt feels as if I am hugging the biggest rock imaginable. As the dog and I reached the big rock that was a landmark on our morning trail, I felt happy that those words had brought up such great memories. After all, they do say that as we age, those distant memories are more accessible at times that what happened yesterday! On the Other Side of the Coin

Editor’s Note: Murray Martin gives WUY permission to share this poem free of charge every holiday. We wish you a safe and Merry Christmas, and please drive responsibly at all times of the year.

by Murray Martin In the early 1970s my brother was killed shortly before Christmas by a drunk driver. His wife died of cancer two years previously. Now after being killed by a drunk driver, Arnold (Rusty) left behind four children, one of whom was a police officer in the city they lived in, back in Ontario. I sat down and wrote the following poem. It was played over the Orillia, Ontario radio a number of times, just before Christmas for a number of years. In the background was playing Silent Night. BEFORE YOU TAKE ONE MORE SNORT FOR THE ROAD, I WOULD ASK THAT YOU READ THE FOLLOWING POEM I WROTE IN MEMORY OF MY BROTHER RUSTY. There are shouting joys of laughter in the local pub this night, The closing down of the spot checks have been tied up nice and tight, So drink up my lads and spend your money fast, Let’s toast to the halt of the spot checks, now isn’t that a blast. Who says I can’t drink and drive, I’ve done it many times, I haven’t had an accident nor have I paid a fine, So I drink a half a dozen, sometimes more or less. When half cut, who says I’m not driving at my best.

I can drive with the best of them, I’ve done it time and again, I’ll drive right pass that cop and there is not a thing he can do What do you mean, slow down for that corner, I didn’t see no kid, Wh-wh_what was that thump I heard and stop saying I hit a kid. Stop saying I shouldn’t drank so much, there is no more spot checks to run, So Merry Christmas and drink up, there is still that fifth of rum.

Curse those stupid spot checks, we could only drink a few, We were forced to save our money, what a stupid thing to do. It meant more money for Christmas and maybe shoes for little Sue, I had to miss the merry making, and well, Sue’s old shoes will do. We don’t need those spot checks, they spoiled all our fun, So drink up my hardies, those spot checks were so dumb. Now we can down all we like, the Beer, the Rye, and the Rum.

An hour past and a knock did come upon the household door, A policeman with hat in hand asked to come in and close the door. Your little girl was hit by a car and left there in the snow, They say it was a drunken driver, but there is little more we know. You see, the spot checks are cancelled, and we have no more control.

Hell, now it’s time for closing, but we have nothing to fear, So Merry Christmas and a good old drunk New Year.

The hospital was silent as he walked through the door, He reached out and took the hand that seemed to be growing cold. I waved to you dear daddy, as I saw your car draw near, I guess you didn’t see me, it’s your merry time of year.

Sure I can drive Harry, I’ve only had a few, A half dozen more or less and stop saying my time is due.

He stood there shocked, as her eyes closed and her little hand grew cold, If only there had been a spot check, he would not have drank so bold.
