Ken remembers the turn of the century when society feared digital failure and relying on antiquated tools

There’s something about the turning of one year into the next, not to mention when a decade slips quietly into another. But how could such an event compare to the morphing of both a century and a millennium from old to new?

On the cusp of 1999/2000, I was gainfully employed as cabinet communications advisor to the Yukon government. As such, I inhabited the inner circle of the territory’s premier, whom we still called Government Leader back then. When 2019 recently moved aside to make room for 2020, it was relatively anticlimactic. After all, what could distinguish one year, even a whole decade, from its predecessor? Impeachment? Climate crises? The possibility of another world war? Piffle. None of that compared to the transition from the second century AD (or whatever they call it these days) into the third. You see, we faced this little thing called Y2K.

I didn’t get my knickers in a twist when the ’40s became the ’50s, or when 1959 gave up the ghost to 1960, with all the promise of a new Camelot on the grounds of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The passage of 1969 into 1970 meant little more than the prospect of an end to war in Vietnam and the possible impeachment of a strange, messianic leader of the free world. When 1979 yielded to 1980, and 1989 became 1990, I might as well have been asleep in bed. It meant nothing to my daily existence, on either Dec. 31 or Jan. 1. However, when 1999 was about to fold its millennial hand, most of cont’d on page 3 ...

What should we think when decades and centuries turn? ... cont’d us were as skittish as what Tennessee Ernie Ford would have referred to as “a long-tailed cat in a roomful of rocking chairs.” Dire predictions abounded everywhere. The stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, 2000 would unleash universal chaos and the end of civilization as we knew it. Planes would fall from the sky and elevators would plummet to the ground, as in some apocalyptic Bruce Willis movie. Millions would die under the surgeon’s knife as operating theatres worldwide went dark. All because somebody, somewhere in Techland, lacked the foresight to embed enough digits in computerized calendars. Guess what? It never happened. In the finely-honed bureaucracy of the Yukon government, appropriate measures had been taken. If all else failed, we could go back to pencils, paper, even slide rules and abacuses, if necessary. The crucial business of government (collecting taxes, issuing cheques and doublespeak news releases) would continue. But in the Government Leader’s office, we were pumped. A new millennium (which happened to coincide with an election year) would be a time to celebrate. It was. And we did.

Larry has some tips to practice mindfulness for good health

M

ore than 35 years ago, I was taught a simple meditation routine. I did not then or now completely understand the mechanics of the routine, but I did it daily for a year or so. Looking back, I wonder why I stopped as it was simple, didn’t take long (18 minutes) and really worked to “bring me back to centre,” as it was described to me. I still cannot explain that term but because the routine is so simple and the success is astounding, I accept and use the term. For the past 15 years, I have done my version of “mindfulness” on a daily basis. I require myself to set aside 30 minutes per day for this routine. In those years, I have probably only missed 20 or 30 days and on every one of those days I realized that I had missed something important and also essential to my well-being. I make an effort to do this around midday, but when things are happening I get it done as late as supper time. Some days are not as fruitful as others, but there is never a day when after my half hour I do not feel better than I did before the half hour. At my current age (75), I am totally worn out by late afternoon, but this routine gives me energy to do what I need to do. I am the cook at our house, so there are some expectations. My routine is simple, but I continually accept that I want to do

this every day and my reason for that is the success I have realized. I want the space to be warm, so I do it near the garage, or cabin

For the past 15 years, I have done my version of “mindfulness” on a daily basis. I require myself to set aside 30 minutes per day for this routine.

wood-stove, or under the summer sun. I lie down on my back, in a Canadian Tire “Zero Gravity” chair, on the floor, at the Canada

Games Centre track on a mat with feet and lower legs elevated on a bench, or with my feet on a couch at home. If you experiment, you’ll find some good positions. I just lie down, thinking about relaxing and I practice deep breathing. Breathe in for five or six seconds, hold that for five or six seconds, then release it over a number of seconds. You can also try sitting or standing but this is easier to start. Please remember that you cannot do this wrong, you can only do it better. Don’t quit out of frustration as this is very easy and it works. There are a number of breathing techniques that will help you focus but just let your thoughts go where they want to start out with. Google “mindfulness” and you may be surprised how much free information is available to help you give this a try. Of course there are also a myriad of offers for programs and ideas that you have to sign up and pay for. Grey Matters with Barry Waitt

Dementia and getting past the stigma

D

r. Andrew Kaegi lives in Whitehorse and he has dementia. Talking with Andrew and his wife, Susan Rae, it became clear that the impact of dementia on a person, as well as how each person initially reacts to the news, can vary greatly from one individual to the next. But even more important to quality of life is the way the person with dementia (and their family and friends) deals with it. “Well, we just have to go through the process,” thought Kaegi when he received the diagnosis. More on Kaegi and Rae’s journey later, but first, let’s start with the basics. What is dementia? Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a set of symptoms affecting brain function. It’s caused by neurodegenerative and vascular diseases or injuries. It is characterized by a decline in cognitive abilities, including memory, awareness of person, place and time, language, basic math skills, judgement and planning. Dementia can also affect mood and behavior. As a chronic and progressive condition, dementia can significantly interfere with the ability to maintain activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing, toileting and dressing. There is often confusion between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, which is a type of dementia. Alzheimer’s is a type of irreversible, progressive brain

disease that attacks and destroys the brain’s cells, which results in a loss of memory and other essential cognitive functions. The neurodegenerative disease is responsible for causing up to 60 per cent of dementia cases. Dementia has a significant and growing impact on Canadians. In 2015-16, more than 419,000 Canadians aged 65 and over were diagnosed with dementia. As this number does not include those under 65 who have dementia, nor those who have not been diagnosed, the true picture of dementia in Canada is undoubtedly larger. When the aging demographics in Canada are considered, the potential impact of dementia is significant. It is projected that the combined cost of healthcare and out-of-pocket caregivers will be $16.6 billion by 2031. The need to address dementia in Canada was emphasized with the passing of the National Strategy for Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias Act in 2017. This act requires the federal Minister of Health to develop a national dementia strategy informed by a national conference and create a ministerial advisory board The National Conference: Inspiring and Informing a National Dementia Strategy for Canada was held in May, 2018. Participants at the conference included people living with dementia, caregivers, advocacy groups, health professionals,

Dr. Andrew Kaegi and Susan Rae attended a national conference to help shape the national dementia strategy researchers and representatives from provincial and territorial governments. The conference was the first of its kind in Canada and unprecedented in terms of having all stakeholders involved. Kaegi and Rae attended the national conference, representing northern Canada through the B.C. Alzheimer’s Caregivers Society. They were thrilled to be invited to the conference that was to help shape the national strategy and they were excited with the inclusive approach to the conference. The National Dementia Strategy has three objectives: 1. Prevent dementia. 2. Advance therapies and find a cure. 3. Improve the quality of life of people living with dementia and caregivers. Five principles set out values to direct and guide action on dementia in Canada. They are: 1. Prioritizing quality of life. 2. Respect and value diversity. 3. Respect human rights. 4. Evidence-informed. 5. Results-focused. More details on the objectives, the principles and other information is available in A Dementia Strategy for Canada: In Brief. Programs for those with dementia and those who suspect they, or a loved one, may have dementia vary between jurisdictions in Canada. First Link dementia support is the suite of programs offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

These programs are designed to help people affected by dementia. First Link helps people living with dementia to better understand the diagnosis and become equipped to cope with the changes to come. Yukoners living with dementia and their caregivers are supported in multiple programs and in different ways throughout the territory. These include: • A branch within the Yukon government dedicated to supporting older adults, including those with dementia: The Seniors Services and Adult Protection branch. • Specialist physician services (e.g. neurology and geriatric psychiatry) available by referral to assist in diagnosis and care management for people living with dementia. • The Caregivers Support Group. This group is based on a Mutual Aid model, meaning those who attend will learn from other group members who are caring for someone facing the illness. • Online resources available through the Health and Social Services (HSS) Department, including a list of private caregivers willing to support individuals with dementia in their homes. Health and Social Services is planning a public education series on dementia in the new year. The series is co-funded by the Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation and is entitled “Spark: Shine a Light on Dementia.” It is a five-part series primarily intended for caregivers of people with dementia. Further information

on the series will be available in January. Considering the increasing number of older Canadians, is an increase in levels of dementia inevitable? As mentioned, one of the three objectives of the National Dementia Strategy is to prevent dementia. There is growing scientific evidence that healthy living from an early age may prevent dementia and delay its onset. Dr. Reagan Gale said, “Research is clear that the same behaviours that contribute to chronic health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure also significantly raise the risk of developing dementia. A study published in the Lancet in 2017 estimated that 1 in 3 cases of dementia could be prevented by making lifestyle changes earlier in life. Behaviour changes like stopping smoking (including cannabinoids as well as tobacco), limiting alcohol intake, and managing high blood pressure will help reduce the risk of developing dementia.” Evidence also suggests that higher levels of education may improve the brain’s ability to resist, offset and cope with damage and decline. Much more research needs to be done to solidify the information on preventative measures for dementia. To be continued ... Barry is a transplanted big city guy, having moved north for the love of a Yukon woman, exploring the land and his options in semi-retirement.

In addition, there will be special performances and entertainment during the show intermission and show interludes. The successful growth of the event has brought back triedand-true dates like the Air North trip for two, Muktuk Adventures dog sledding, pampering for two at Beautiful You and hiking at Mt Logan Lodge, as well as a catered home tasting with Yukon Brewing and Wandering Bison. The new approach has attracted sponsored date additions including Blackbird Bakery dessert to compliment the at-home tasting, a riverboat tour

ast year, the major annual fundraiser of the Boys and Girls Club of Yukon (BGCY), the “Bachelor Auction,” made an evolutionary step as an event. The new “Live Auction” format now partners with Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous and hosts entertaining skits from the Sourdough Sams to live auction more expansive and exciting date packages. The event caters to couples, friends and groups looking for laughs, entertainment and gourmet food, while helping support the programming

of the BGCY. Instead of recruiting eligible Yukon bachelors and pairing them with a date package for live bidding by attendees, organizers took suggestions to expand the appeal beyond Yukon singles open to try a first date for charity. The previous model required dates that were low-pressure situations and suited to people meeting each other for the first time. With the new format, the dates can be more expansive and cater to couples, friends or even singles looking for a first date, which, according to Lindsay Cornell, executive director of BGCY, opens up increased revenue. “By making it a date auction, we were able to put together date packages of higher value, requiring greater commitment and expanding on the excitement,” Cornell said. “Sometimes there were misconceptions from participants on the intent of the auction (raising money for BGCY) or individuals didn’t feel comfortable bidding on an expensive package on what

was essentially a first date. So we wanted to try something that everyone could bid on and create an event that was more inclusive for all folks.” For example, the top selling date package last year was a trip for two to Edmonton to watch an Edmonton Oilers hockey game, which wouldn’t have been possible under the old model. The total for that single date package more than doubled the highest grossing bachelor and date that was auctioned the previous year. This year’s Denim and Diamonds theme will guide Sourdough Sams in their costumes, skits and props. The vaudeville display provides entertaining comedy, dance and interaction with audience mem-

The Yukon Order Of Pioneers

has been recognizing iconic Yukon couples who have helped shape our Yukon communities since 1971. As is tradition, Yukon Order Of Pioneers are pleased to introduce the

2020 Mr & Mrs Yukon:

Dan & Valerie Drummond

We are humbled and honoured to be selected by the YOOP to be Mr. and Mrs. Yukon 2020. Dan accepted a job with Yukon Forestry (the Feds at the time) and arrived in Whitehorse just after the paddle wheelers burned in July 1974. His first time visiting Gerties in Dawson City, he happened to sit at Valerie’s blackjack table and against all odds won a few dollars (that night only). He told her he was moving back to Dawson that winter and might see her then. Two years later they were married in the Anglican church at Moosehide on September 4, 1976 before JP Frank Lidstone. After a salmon barbeque at Moosehide they had a reception at the YOOP hall in Dawson. For their honeymoon they flew into Little Kalsas Lake next to the McArthur Game Sanctuary with Trans North Turbo Air on a successful moose hunt. Dan started with the Game Branch as a Game Guardian in December 1975. J.B. Fitzgerald’s Game Branch. Game Guardians morphed into today’s Conservation Officer, a position I held for 32 years. Being a Conservation Officer in Dawson City, Whitehorse and Haines Junction and working with Yukon wildlife was a rewarding and interesting career. Since retiring in 2007 Dan has actively trapped every winter on various traplines in the south west Yukon often staying in a tent frame and more recently in a cabin he built. As well he has also worked for various big game outfitters and guided hunters (river and lake moose hunts) in the central and southern Yukon. Valerie ran a small gift shop from their home for 10 years. For 16 years she and their son Lee ran a wilderness tourism business with fishing, hiking and rafting trips in the Kluane region. They settled into Dawson City and built a log house on 8th Avenue. Our nearest neighbour was Hazel Malloy. Hazel and Jack Malloy were true Yukon pioneers and were the first ever YOOP Mr. and Mrs. Yukon in 1971. On January 5, l978 their son Ryan was born at the Dawson Nursing station via an emergency “C” section. Dr. David Storey (at the time an anesthetist) flew in the night at temperatures below minus 40 to help perform the operation with Dawson’s Dr McCall. Al “Lugs” Close with YTG Highways put out flare pots to mark the runway for the pilot to land in the dark. After this drama no baby deliveries were “planned” for the Dawson nursing station. Some 41 years later Dr. Storey is still one of the Yukon’s premier caregivers. Their second son Lee was born with much less drama in June 1980. From 1980 to 1986 they lived in Whitehorse. In 1986 they moved to Haines Junction and built a log house to raise their family. Volunteering For Their Communities: While in Dawson City Dan was a volunteer fireman from 1975 to 1980.

In Haines Junction, Dan played Oldtimers hockey and for many years coached and organized Haines Junction Minor Hockey as well as Oldtimers Hockey. they hosted a very popular Oldtimers Tournament for some 20 years which included a team from Juneau, Alaska. Friendships made through this tournament still endure today. In the late 1980’s they initiated 3 events in Haines Junction that continue to this day. For over 30 years they organized a Skate with Santa on Christmas eve day. Dan (often with help from family and friends) has built and lit the annual Halloween bonfire since the late 1980’s. They noticed many young people needed a focus when they were home during the Christmas holiday period. They started a Christmas Holiday co ed hockey tournament building teams around various families. This popular event has been held for about 20 years and is now being organized by another hockey family in town. Valerie continues to play and organize women’s hockey including a popular annual women’s tournament with teams from throughout the Yukon. Dan is a past director with the Yukon Fish and Game Association and often measures trophies for the YFGA Big Bull Night. Dan has volunteered to guide and be the designated hunter for the St Elias School bison hunt numerous times. Dan was a member of the St. Elias Lions Club. Dan was a Scouts Canada leader for a number of years and did many scout trips in the Yukon and Alaska. He also took a group of scouts to England and Scotland. In 1992 he was awarded a Scout Leader Merit Medal for his contribution to Scouts. Valerie and Dan volunteer for activities related to the Kluane Chilkat Bicycle Relay in which Valerie participates. In 2011 Dan and Valerie were awarded a Government of Yukon Community Leadership Award. Valerie was given a Volunteer of the Year award by Sport Yukon in 1995 as well as numerous awards from HJMH through the years. Valerie’s mother Marion is 97 years old and lives on her own in an apartment Dan built next to our home. They have 5 grand children aged 6 to 12 years. They feel fortunate to have them living in Haines Junction. Their sons and their wives have picked up the volunteer spirit and organize and coach and mentor in the community. They travel pretty well every year to various parts of the world but often remark that the best travel is in their own backyard in the Yukon. They are often out fishing, hunting or travelling in the Yukon in all seasons. We are very fortunate to live where we do and have our family close in this beautiful territory.

W

hat’s in a name? Is it possible that a kid from Philly named Sam Taylor was predestined to become a tenor sax player and make a name for himself in New York City’s thriving jazz scene? After all, the Big Apple was home for decades to a prolific African-American tenor saxophonist named Sam “The Man” Taylor, who played with the likes of Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Big Joe Turner. That Sam Taylor died in 1990, more than a decade before his younger namesake moved to New York at the age of 17 to study at the State University of New York’s prestigious Purchase College and pick up gigs when and where he could. “I think a lot of them expected somebody else when I showed up for test interviews,” Taylor laughed. “They had probably Googled the name, and here’s this skinny white Jewish guy. It was quite hilarious.” When young Sam Taylor from Philadelphia began playing sax, he’d never heard of the other tenor-playing Sam Taylor, who originally hailed from Lexington, Tennessee. That’s understandable, since he was still in elementary school when the chance to play an instrument arose. His first choice was drums, but other kids beat him to the draw. “I think my second choice was saxophone. I started on alto, because that’s the way it is when you’re a little kid.” Eventually, he grew into his life’s role as a tenor, largely through the influence of his school’s band director, who played the same instrument. “He really inspired me. The school didn’t have enough tenor saxophones, but I think he saw that I was passionate and a good student. He loaned me his own personal vintage tenor saxophone to use,” Taylor recounted.

“That’s a huge thing to do for a 12-year-old kid, to trust them with your priceless baby. So, he’s the real reason I chose a life of music, for sure.” Taylor considers himself fortunate to have grown up in a city that has spawned such disparate performers as John Coltrane, Patti LaBelle, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker, rapper-turned-actor Will Smith, Hall & Oates, and Boyz II Men. “There was, and still is, a very vibrant art community and music community. I owe a lot to Philly. People are very welcoming and open,” Taylor said. “There’s a place called Ortlieb’s Jazz House, in a part of town that I really had no business being as a kid of 12 or 13, or a little bit older. But they really just took me in; it was the place to be for jazz.” Even while he was a student at his hometown’s High School for Creative and Performing Arts, Taylor spent as much time as he could soaking up what the local jazz scene had to offer. That gave him an opportunity to perform and study with many established Philly musicians. “That was the real school, outside of the classroom, watching real masters do it.” It was in that context that he met a man he considers his hero, another tenor player named Larry McKenna, who still lives in Philly, but has racked up an armful of impressive credits with such big names as Woody Herman and Buddy DeFranco. Taylor has since gone on to play and record with McKenna, who is now 82. In fact, McKenna was slated to be part of a Sam Taylor Quartet tour this month, including an appearance for Jazz Yukon this Sunday. Unfortunately, McKenna is unable to make the journey due to health concerns, so the Whitehorse gig is being re-billed as the

Sam Taylor Trio. Besides his obvious attachment to the City of Brotherly Love, Taylor has also developed a strong appreciation for the sense of community he has found in his adopted city. At 30-something, he’s a relative youngster compared to many other denizens of New York’s jazz scene, but after living there for almost half his life, he no longer feels like a neophyte. “But I do feel like a kid in terms of the music. As a student, I still feel very young. There’s just so much work to do and so much to learn. That’s sort of what I love about this life of music playing,” he acknowledged. “It’s such an open road. It gives you a chance to develop and grow. And especially in New York. Things are never static. It’s always changing. Every day is another day.” And after experiencing life as a rising musician in such a sprawling city, where travelling by subway is the norm, Taylor is grateful he didn’t get his first choice of instruments back in public school. “Drummers have to schlepp all their stuff up and down the stairs, and bass players have to get through the turnstile. I just had my horn on my back, so I think I had it pretty good,” he laughed. The Sam Taylor Trio will present an evening of jazz standards at the Yukon Arts Centre on Sunday, Jan. 26, as part of the Jazz on the Wing series. Besides Taylor, personnel will include Aaron Seeber on drums and Neal Miner on upright bass. Start time is 7:30 p.m. For more details, go to JazzYukon.ca.

new comedy troupe is stepping outside the box currently occupied by Yukon’s comedy scene. The Yukon Famous, otherwise known as Jason Westover, Patrick Keenan, Elissa Ciullo and Chris MacFarlane, plan to perform comedy in various styles and genres, including a mix of standup, sketch, improv, monologue, music, dance and media. “We don’t want to be boxed into a specific genre which makes us a true ‘variety’ group,” Westover said. “We also want to collaboratively work with other artists and organizations and to be malleable enough to perform for all age groups and venues. “Right now the city is in sort of a stand-up comedy frenzy. It’s everywhere and that’s to the credit of those artists and producers in the city who have made stand-up a sustainable and marketable product. But other than that, and the local production companies that produce comic shows or one-shot events for their season, there’s no other group that provides an alternate source of comedy. We’re hoping to be that alternative. It’s important to stress that we are not a ‘sketch’ group or a ‘standup comedy’ group, or an ‘improv’ group. We are hoping to be all of the above and to think outside the box with creating new forms of comedy that have yet to be hatched. Our collaborative nature also extends beyond our troupe to other companies and artists.” This includes Outside artists, who may find it hard to come by opportunities in the North. Each troupe member has been an independent performer in Whitehorse, but by coming together they bring a set of complementary skills together. “Patrick is an awesome musician and a very creative writer,” said Westover. “Elissa acts, writes, has film experience and is extremely versatile. Chris is another musician, has improv skills, acts, and is very strong in character

work. And I bring acting, standup and improv experience.” Last spring Westover was in a bit of a life funk. “Work was catching up with me, I had gained some extra unwanted weight, and was feeling the drag of winter,” he said. “Artistically I was just floating around without direction, as many of us do at certain times. One day I woke up and decided to do something about it. “I think we performers often talk about creating some sort of troupe now and then, and I thought it was as good as time any, especially since I was looking for something different to tackle rather than the same rotating wheel of acting and stand-up. I reached out to Pat, Elissa and Chris, all of whom I had crossed paths with in the past, but never performed with regularly. To me they were extremely talented performers who were kind of off the radar in the artistic community and that presented an opportunity to create a fresh product with a new group of artists.” The others were very interested and excited to get involved. “Those early meetings were a real feeling-out process for us,” said Westover. “We had different approaches to comedy and we’re fundamentally different people, which I believe works in our favour. After lots of healthy discussion about what this group would and could be, we had a broad idea of our direction.” Westover stressed that although he reached out to the other members initially, the Yukon Famous was never intended to be “his” group. “The idea from the beginning was a shared ownership with democratic collaboration,” he said. “Especially now as we move toward our first show. The Yukon Famous is everyone’s creation. We’re building it together and that’s very exciting.” The troupe’s first show, Awk-

Elissa Ciullo (left), Patrick Keenan, Jason Westover and Chris MacFarlane are willing to give up their shirts off their backs for a laugh ward First Date, takes place on Feb. 1. “It’s a Valentine’s theme where we and the audience are really meeting for the first time,” Westover said. “Who are we? Will they like us? Do we all get to kiss at the end of the night? There’s only one way to find out! “People can expect a show that’s familiar yet completely different from the expectation of a local comedy show. What I mean by that is, we are seasoned performers in this town. Folks have seen us performing stand-up, or acting, or music, and they know what we bring to the table. But the comedy being performed is completely different. We have a variety of sketch, monologues and improv that’s brand new and different than anything we’ve ever done and that’s nerve-wracking and exciting all wrapped in one. It’s what keeps that artistic blood flowing. We are dedicated to bringing the best product we can to this show. We’re hoping to keep the audience on their toes with a plethora of acts. Our hearts are on our sleeves and if you’re an audience member we hope that comes through.” Westover said people can expect a well-rounded event that includes entertainment from host Jenny Hamilton and local band,

Major Funk and The Employment. Brandon Wicke, current manager of the Guild Hall and an accomplished playwright and actor will also be featured. Wicke has created a 10-minute play that he will perform as part of the evening’s entertainment. The show takes place at the Fireside Room in the Yukon Inn. Doors open at 7 p.m. The band starts at 7:30 p.m. and the comedy starts at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at BrownPaperTickets.com, or by contacting theyukonfamous@gmail.com. “We are proud of our troupe thus far and we will be grateful to every person who buys a ticket for this show,” said Westover. “We hope to continue the journey of discovery as The Yukon Famous and be a part of this great artistic tapestry that has been forged in the Yukon.” Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.
