Available Light Film Festival brings a diverse program of films and media art to Whitehorse audiences this February by Amber Church

W

hen coming up with a description of the Available Light Film Festival (ALFF) for the uninitiated, Andrew Connors, the festival director and artistic director of the Yukon Film Society, highlights the festival’s diversity and character. “It’s an intimate festival that celebrates northern, Indigenous and Canadian cinema with some international spice thrown in for good measure, packed into a condensed time period in a great venue,” he said. “It’s also a wellloved annual event that is really embraced by the Yukon community.” “Every iteration of the festival has its own flavour that stems from the diversity of the films, the mix of guests and how they all come together. It really has its own special alchemy,” he added. It’s a striking contrast to larger festivals, like the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, from which Connors recently returned. “Our festival guests can be found exploring the community over the course of the festival and hanging out with each other,” he explained. “You don’t see too much of that at bigger festivals.” Connors is really excited for the diversity of this year’s program, sharing that he feels that is a real strength for this year’s festival. The program includes a media art exhibit installed in the Yukon Arts Centre’s Community Gallery; ALFF After Hours, a multi-day program of live music and stand-up comedy at the Edgewater Hotel;

a full day of Indigenous cinema at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on February 1 featuring free admission and a stew and bannock lunch; and a special screening for schools (and the public) of 2040, an innovative feature documentary exploring what the future would look like if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them into the mainstream. The festival will kick-off on January 30 with a live taping of Ryan McMahon’s comedy podcast Red Man Laughing - an Indigenous arts and culture podcast rooted squarely at the intersection of the good, the bad and the ugly between Indian Country and the mainstream. A series of special events are scattered throughout the program. On February 1, six Yukon creative teams will pitch their short film projects to a jury of guest panelists in front of a

The Twentieth Century has just been selected to be part of the Berlin International Film Festival live audience. They will be vying for two production prizes, each worth $5000 in cash and $4000 in services. On February 4th, the Old Fire Hall will host Analog Avant Garde, a 16 mm film performance by John Price Film Works, accompanied by live music and score by Toronto-based sound artist, Greg Jones, which Connors described as,“a presentation that happens in the moment, from two filmmakers who are doing interesting things on the fringes.” And on February 8th, award-winning drag tragicomedienne Pearle Harbour presents her cabaret spectacular Agit-Pop! – musical meditations for the prepost-apocalypse. And then there’s the films. “There’s a lot of really strong Canadian cinema in this year’s program,” said Connors. “And a lot of it is very international looking – for example the documentary about Robbie Robertson and the Band, Once Were Brothers, that was the opening night film of 2019 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), or The Hottest August which was cont’d on page 3 ...

Blood Quantum is a zombie film from Michael Greyeyes that takes place outside the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow. Greyeyes will be in attendance at the festival shot in the five boroughs of New York.” Many of the screenings will play host to special guests. “It’s such an honour to have Michael Greyeyes joining us,” said Connors. “He’s such a talented actor who has more than 70 credits under his belt including a lead role

in Woman Walks Ahead with Jessica Chastain and Smoke Signals.” Greyeyes plays the tribal sheriff in Blood Quantum, a zombie film that takes place outside the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow, whose Indigenous inhabitants are immune to the zombie plague. Up and coming young actress, Kacey Rohl, was named one of TIFF’s Rising Stars. She will be attending the festival with her film White Lie. Connor’s describes her performance in the film as “stand-

out, unnerving and amazing”. Joining the group of talented actors at the festival are an equally talented slate of directors and producers. Matthew Rankin’s film The Twentieth Century has just been selected to be part of the Berlin International Film Festival. Marie Clements’s film Red Snow, about a Gwich’in soldier from the Canadian Arctic caught in an ambush in Kandahar, Afghanistan, is the opening film of the festival. John Walker turns his finely crafted documentary skills on an exploration of assholes with the help of Monty Python’s John Cleese and LGBTQ activist Vladimir Luxuria, while Kazik Radwanski’s Anne at 13,000 ft was named a TIFF Top Ten Canadian Film for 2019. And Mira Burt-Wintonick’s Win-

topia has its Canadian premiere at Available Light, which Connors calls a real feather in our caps for the festival. The local filmmaking community will get the opportunity to benefit from the presence in the Yukon of these talented individuals as many will be running master classes as part of the industry conference associated with the film festival. Vivian Belick, co-programmer for the festival, is really excited for the industry conference as she feels it is the fullest and most well-rounded program in recent memory. She attributes the strong response the conference is seeing already from Yukon’s filmmaking and digital community directly linked to this. Whatever section of the Available Light Film Festival Yukoners chose to take, they can be sure to be spoiled for choice. “We’ve created a program that has great diversity throughout the whole day,” said Connors. “We tried to schedule great films throughout the whole program, so it doesn’t matter if you want to take in a film Monday at noon or Friday at 9 pm, there will be something worthwhile to see.” Available Light Film Festival runs from January 31st to February 9th, with the majority of the program focused at the Yukon Arts Centre. You can find their full program on their website at https:// yukonfilmsociety.com/alff and purchase tickets from the Yukon Arts Centre Box Office or https:// www.yukontickets.com. Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

YOUR FUTURE TO BEAUTIFUL SKIN

here are two tangible approaches to helping individuals with dementia that are significant to improving their quality of life. One is creating “dementia friendly communities,” which is often assisted by applying a dementia-friendly communities toolkit or checklist to assess one’s own community. One of the major components of such a toolkit is the physical design of communities, most of which are covered by designing “age-friendly communities.” Designing age-friendly communities was described in a recent Grey Matters column by Lillian Nakamura Maguire. But “age friendly communities” design does not capture everything needed in a community to be dementiafriendly. This also includes the training of those likely to interact with people who have dementia. For example, a first responder can watch a video explaining how to recognize someone living

with dementia in a crisis situation and learn appropriate interaction techniques. One other significant factor is continuing community engagement. Whether the individual with dementia continues to interact with society and be engaged with people and projects, or whether they slip into isolation due to the dementia can make a huge difference. Maintaining the connection with the world is essential to battling the effects of dementia. Dr. Andrew Kaegi had a rare opportunity by being involved in the national conference. While doing brain exercises is important, Kaegi was advised by Dr. Michael Passmore, who originally diagnosed his dementia: “You’re going to get a lot more out of the advocacy and community engagement you and Susan are doing than sitting around playing Sudoku. Doing things with others

is very important. Isolation is a huge problem.” The journey that Kaegi and Rae have taken through investigation, advocacy and responding to Kaegi’s dementia in as positive a way as possible has been difficult and exhausting, but necessary to pursue their best possible life course. Kaegi and Rae described that initial confrontation of the possibility of his having dementia: “Susan scheduled a meeting to talk about my problem.” Kaegi started. “Sometimes he just had that certain look, like he was just not getting it,” Rae continued. “I told him I noticed that he was having trouble describing things, thinking things through and struggling for words. He would call it a timekeeper rather than a clock. He was having trouble processing cont’d on page 5 ...

Susan Rae (left) and Dr. Andrew Kaegi are taking a journey of investigation, advocacy and responding to Kaegi’s dementia in as positive a way as possible questions or information, assessing space.” “When Susan told me what she saw happening to me I was angry. I told her that her memory wasn’t that good either and that she was exaggerating.” Kaegi was not happy about it, but a few days later he came out and said, “yes, you are right. I think I am having problems.” “She scheduled an appointment with our family doctor, where I was given a series of memory tests. I actually did quite well, but the doctor saw enough from the appointment that I was referred to a geriatric psychiatrist, Dr. Michael Passmore.” “When it was confirmed by Dr. Passmore that Andrew had dementia, I cried and cried.” Rae said. “Knowing the path that we were going to be on. This had confirmed my worst fears.” Kaegi’s reaction to the diagnosis seems to reflect his attitude about life, at least since this author has known him. “Wow. This man [Dr. Passmore] knows what he’s talking about. I’m very privileged that I have this doctor to work with.” “I thought; Well, we will just have to go through this. In fact, I was very relieved that I had this opportunity. I knew what was going on.” Rae explained the different reaction many people with dementia have.

“Some people who have dementia symptoms are scared or ashamed to tell their doctor; reluctant to admit to themselves that they have dementia and scared or ashamed to be open with their family and friends about the diagnosis. The result of ‘hiding it’ is social isolation, such as withdrawing from social connections and activities within social settings, which then results in decreased brain activity and the dementia worsening.” After Kaegi and Rae did extensive research into dementia, including talking to experts in the field, they were determined that hiding it was not how they were going to tackle his dementia. “I actually tell people what it feels like. The vast majority of social interactions where my dementia comes up have been positive. People treat me with respect.” One exception noted by Rae was that sometimes when people talk to the two of them together, they direct whatever they are saying toward her. Rae feels that there is a stigma around dementia like there was around cancer, diabetes or heart disease 50 to 60 years ago. According to Dr. Passmore, dealing with dementia in an open and honest manner and setting aside the stigma will improve the quality of life for both people with dementia and those caregivers in-

Log lengths or stove Hurlburt lengths, we can take care of you. Enterprises In fact, we’ll even Inc. deliver right to your

volved. Rae gave an example of what this approach has meant to them. “Being involved, going out and doing stuff, having a cause is all very important. When Andrew goes out for coffee with friends, I can see the difference in him for 24 hours because he is much more alert and he remembers things. He is excited about life.” In response to the question, if you could say one thing to the average citizen, what would it be, Kaegi thought. “I want to talk about how it feels to have dementia. I have some good days and some very bad days. I got up this morning and I was thinking about us getting together to talk about this and I couldn’t find the right words to describe it. It made me feel angry and sad. I often feel muddled.” “Dementia doesn’t necessarily mean the end of quality life,” Rae said. “You can still live with purpose and joy. And for the caregiver, make sure you get respite and continue your activities and relationships. You are going to need them.” Barry is a transplanted big city guy, having moved north for the love of a Yukon woman, exploring the land and his options in semi-retirement.

We’ve got the right stuff for... SAYING

I LOVE YOU

Stressed out? Try mindfulness Candles, chocolates & candy, Valentine cards, lovers gifts, heart shaped everything, decorations, and so much more.

O

ne of the main ingredients of doing mindfulness successfully is to be able to focus so that your brain and body can slow and calm down allowing you to relax. Success is more challenging when your mind is racing from one topic to another, although I have found I feel very much better after a ½ hour of even scatter-brained activity than I felt before I started. The simplest way to focus is to do a mental inventory of your body from the toes up to the top of your head. Lying on my back with or without my calves and feet on a bench or couch, I think about my toes until I have a sense that I can feel them. Then I move my attention to my ankles, calves, knees, thighs, hips, etc. up to the top of my head. This may be challenging at first but keep at it and soon it will work for you. Try not to look for too much as it is just a “sense”from each body location. This process has you focussed on the task and your brain is not jumping from topic to topic, distracting you. Different breathing techniques can also help get to and keep a focus. The two I will describe both work well but the second one requires a bit more attention to do it successfully. The first technique is just an add-on to the deep-breathing (relaxation breathing) method described in part 1 of this topic. Breathe in four to five seconds, hold three to four seconds, breathe out four to five seconds. The change is called the “sip

this routine, one has to pay attention. Doing so keeps your brain focussed and free from wandering. You really can’t do mindfulness wrong, you can just do it better. It works and it is not difficult to enjoy healthful success. Just don’t set your goals too high to start with, keep doing

Larry has some tips to practice mindfulness for good health method,” where at the end of the breath in, you take two more “sips” of breath (like sipping tea.) You have to think about this so that helps with your focus. The second technique cannot help but keep your brain on topic, therefore clear of wandering. You can vary the start, but the routine is important to follow and keeps your focus. The timing for inhalation, hold and exhalation are the same, but the routine changes with each breath. Let’s say you start breathing in through your nose. You exhale through your mouth and then inhale through your mouth and out your nose. Then inhale through your nose and out your mouth. Each breath is inhaled/exhaled opposite to the previous one. In order to do

it and allow yourself to find joy in glimpses of success. There’s more to come and the whole process will amaze you. Some days the brain has more challenge to focus on anything, but I have found I can have a very successful ½ hour of mindfulness even in our small cabin with grandchildren enjoying themselves. Onion and anchovy tart

nions, anchovies and a savory custard make this easy tart a great appetizer for a few drinks with friends or even a light dinner when paired with a salad. If you’re not a fan of tinned

fish, just omit them, but the salty anchovy fillets make a satisfying contrast to the sweet onions. Serves 6 as an appetizer

AWG 2020 Cultural Marketplace coordinator Courtney Holmes takes in the Adäka Cultural Festival display

T

he Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games, in partnership with the Yukon First Nations Culture and Tourism Association (YFNCT) and presented by Finning,

is inviting Yukon visual artists and craftspeople to apply for the AWG 2020 Cultural Marketplace hosted at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre from March 16 to 21. The marketplace will showcase Yukon’s wide range of visual artists, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arctic Winter Games. Artists will provide their works to the marketplace in advance and the pieces will be professionally displayed by a curator and sold in a 2,000 square foot gallery space. All pieces are being cared for and sold by the gallery team. Yukon offers such a diverse array of skilled artists,” said Courtney Holmes, YFNCT’s arts program coordinator. “The AWG Cultural Marketplace will showcase the talent and unique perspective of the territory’s visual culture. It’s a great opportunity to not only sell work but to share Yukon stories with other circum-

polar nations.” Artists selected for the Cultural Marketplace will be invited to Whitehorse to participate in creative programming designed specifically for their benefit and enjoyment. Organizers anticipate a strong contingent of artists from Yukon communities and are encouraging them to apply. “This is more than a commercial opportunity for Yukon artists,“ explained Holmes. “We’re bringing together creatives from across the territory to meet, share a special experience and forge relationships with one another.”

Deadline for applications is Friday, Feb. 7, 2020 and artists can expect to receive a response from the committee by Friday, Feb. 14. Applications in English and French can be found online at www. awg2020.org/culture. For any questions, contact the marketplace coordinator, Courtney Holmes via email at courtney. holmes@awg2020.org or phone (867) 667-7698 ext 204. The Arctic Winter Games will be hosted in Whitehorse March 15-21.

Chica & Pudding make Yukon ‘home’

FOR BEST TRAINING RESULTS

by Monica Garcia

M

any of us experience the urge to settle down once we start planning a family, land our first serious job, or perhaps after traveling the world a bit. For Chica Mishima (pronounced “Cheeca”), it was the acquisition of a four kilogram lap dog that caused her to do an aboutturn, apply for Canadian Citizenship and move to the Yukon with said k9 sidekick.

Full disclosure; Chica is my neighbour. We live out of town. Pudding proudly protects her roughly 400-foot cabin from all intruders except, unfortunately, mice. Chica is a “blue jugger.” She lives without running water and, like many of her fellow Yukoners, chops wood to feed her stove in a continuous attempt to keep her and Pudding warm, especially with our sub-30 and 40 temperatures of late! This is all a very different life than the one Chica had in Japan (where she was born and raised), and also in Ireland, where she lived for several years immediately before becoming a Canadian resident. It was in Ireland that Pudding (as she named her partner in crime and immigration) came into Chica’s life. And quite by accident! Chica was looking to rent a room in a house where the previous tenants had split in a hurry, leaving their eight dogs behind. All but one were brought

breed who was underweight and had obviously been abused. “At first, I didn’t intend to take the dog,” said Chica. “I thought ‘I’m not the type of person who should have a dog. I travel a lot’... but I also thought ‘I can give her a nice life while I’m here, maybe for half a year.’” Referred to simply as “doggy” and sometimes “princess,” the dog didn’t even have a known name. Chica found inspiration in the first syllable

Pudding’s compact size has proved convenient. Seen here with loving owner, Chica. She opened an Instagram account (with the handle “adventurepudding”) and adventures they had! With her European “pet passport” Pudding went along on travels to neighboring countries, traveling by car, bus and train. They even took the ferry to Spain and hiked a section of the Camino!

Pudding was destined for grande travels and dual citizenship. of “Princess,” which translates as “pudding” (of the custard variety) in Japanese. Hence, Princess was rechristened Pudding. And honestly,

T h e two quickly bonded and became inseparable. Pudding would even accompany Chica for a pint at the local pub. “She’s an Irish dog after all!” laughed Chica.

A young and venturesome traveler, Chica loved Europe and was hoping to work for a while in Ireland before going on to travel extensively through Africa. Pudding changed her game plan. When an Irish bylaw came into effect requiring all dogs to have microchips implanted, Chica took the necessary steps, linking herself to Pudding via the pet database. Although Pudding had initially been spared from the shelter by the landlord, it was Chica that had become the loyal, and now official, owner. Her nesting instincts kicked in. Chica’s African dreams faded as she took her pet ownership seriously and knew it would be far more complicated, and dangerous, to travel between African states with Pudding in tow. Together, they had lived in Ireland for more than three years, but Chica’s desire to stay there was dampening with the weather. Nor did she feel excited to return to Japan, even in the interim, as it requires extensive paperwork totaling tens of thousands

A diet and packing ensued shortly thereafter. Pudding, who had gone from four to eight kilograms with Chica spoiling her, would need to lose weight to travel as carry-on baggage to Vancouver. Pudding cut a pound and a half and made the cut to fly coach with Chica in September 2018. Having never traveled well by road (Pudding often threw up), it was with some trepidation that Chica bought a used car in Vancouver and started the long drive north to Whitehorse. She made Pudding a perch in the passenger seat, so she could appreciate the view, and somehow, they both made it.

directly from Canada, having left because it was too cold. She’d done her homework and knew agreements were in place which made it relatively easy for an Irish dog to immigrate to Canada.

“If I hadn’t gotten a dog, I’d still be traveling. I wouldn’t have applied for permanent residency … Sometimes when I wake up, here in Canada and see Pudding, I think ‘wow, is this real?’” said Chica.

But Chica got nervous awaiting the fate of her immigration application. She spent precious savings on the papers needed for Pudding to

One never knows the twists and turns of life. Who would have imagined that a little Irish orphan canine would be rescued by a Japanese national? And that said lapdog would be the catalyst for the intrepid traveler to move from Ireland to northern Canada? It was the nudge that cemented the most permanent move in Chica’s life, albeit a young one.

Nominated for 6 Academy Awards 2020.

With a stellar cast and a smart, sensitive retelling of its classic source material, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women proves some stories truly are timeless. In the years after the Civil War, Jo March lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while her sister Amy studies painting in Paris. 8:30pm – Parasite

Nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture!

A glorious success and smashing box-office hit, the Palme d’Or–winning Parasite is a politically charged cinematic wonder. A vertical story of class struggle – punctuated by staircase scenes going from mouldy basements to top floors, from darkness to breezy spaces designed by star architects – Parasite observes and dissects with surgical precision the life of two families of different social backgrounds. Roy Neilson (left) and Carman Lam Brar star in the Guild’s new play The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine

laire Ness was only six (or maybe seven) when she first saw the dark Canadian comedy called The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine. Still, it left a lasting impression, in part, because that Nakai Theatre production in the early 1990s starred her father, Roy Ness, and fellow Whitehorse actor/musician Trish Barclay in the title roles. “I loved it. I saw my Dad in so many plays, and a lot of them were not very memorable, but there are few that stand out,” Ness said. “Definitely, shows like this one and Little Shop of Horrors, and

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. They’re just so colourful and animated.” When the Guild Theatre’s artistic director, Brian Fidler, announced that Ernest and Ernestine would be on this year’s roster, Ness was thinking about auditioning for the female role, since she’d been away from acting for some time. Then a funny thing happened: Fidler approached her about taking on the play as her first foray in the director’s chair. Despite her initial nervousness, she agreed. “I didn’t know if I had enough knowledge, or chops, to be a director right away. But I’ve grown up in the theatre, and I know what the director-actor relationship is like, and I’ve sort of studied what directors do since I started doing theatre. “So far, it’s been really good, and really kind of natural for me. My grandma was a theatre director, so I probably have it somewhere in my blood. I don’t know if I’m a control freak, but I have a vision,” she added with a laugh. Written by Robert Morgan, Martha Ross and Leah Cherniak,

The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine had its debut in 1987 at Toronto’s now-defunct Poor Alex Theatre, sometime home of both Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs) and CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce. Since then, it has gone on to become a favourite in the Canadian theatre canon, frequently re-mounted by both professional and community companies across the country. Ness required very few words to sum up the play’s narrative arc. “Ernest and Ernestine are newlyweds who move into a basement apartment, and their naïveté about love starts to be tested. The pure innocence of their love slowly transforms and gets darker and darker,” she said. “He’s probably more of a doofus than she is, although they’re both doofuses. I think she’s just a little more easy-going, looseygoosey than he is. He’s a bit uptight.” Part of Ness’s attraction to the script lies in the fact that it contains elements of the clown world that is a large part of her own professional experience.

After studying comedy writing and performance at Humber College in Toronto, she later went on to pursue circus teaching at Montréal’s École nationale de cirque, specializing in clown technique. Part of the play’s appeal comes from the sense of optimism (naïveté?) that keeps the two characters ticking. “Even as the experience gets more and more trying, they keep returning to their innocence. That’s part of clown, too, the innocence and experience,” Ness said. Although it’s a two-hander, the play is often considered to have a third character: a cranky, malfunctioning furnace in the couple’s cramped basement suite. Ness doesn’t share that view. Still, she concedes that the furnace provides a strong metaphor. “Yeah, for sure. The furnace plays a role to emphasize the volatility of their relationship as things heat up.” Another major irritant crops up for the young couple in the aftermath of a vehicle accident, with the frustration they face trying to deal with an uncaring bureaucracy. “The car crash actually kind of brings them closer together. It’s one of the main things in the show that bonds them, because now they have something external to be angry at,” Ness said. “They have this great scene where they’re swearing at the audience. We chose to have the audience represent the government, the people they hate. So, they have this great yelling-atthe-audience scene.” When it was suggested that this piece of staging might have particular poignancy at the Guild, where the audience on any given night might include a number of government bureaucrats, Ness discreetly declined to comment. As a first-time director, what was it like for the actor/singer/

clown instructor to take on a play she has always associated with her own father’s performance nearly 30 years ago? “I think it was definitely in my mind at first, but now that Carman Lam Brar and Roy Neilson have kind of taken over my imagination, they’ve breathed new life into it, and it’s become something else,” she said. “There’s still a lot of the same funny from the script, but it’s amazing how different actors and a different team can actually change it, and how different it can be with each production.” The two actors in this version are both relatively new to the Yukon, but each has appeared on the Guild Hall stage before. Carman Lam Brar, who grew up in Abbotsford, B.C., was previously in Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet). Alberta native Roy Neilson’s last Guild appearance was in The Cripple of Inishmaan. Still, in order to prevent the memory of the long-ago Nakai production from influencing her directorial choices, has she gone so far as to banish Roy Ness from the set during rehearsals? Fortunately, that question is moot. Her parents are currently visiting Australia, and won’t be back in time to see her debut production. The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine opens on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the Guild Hall on 14th Ave., and runs Thursday through Saturday until Feb. 15. Curtain is at 8 p.m. sharp. Tickets are available at yukontickets.com and there is a paywhat-you-can performance on Wednesday, Feb. 5. For more information, go to GuildHall.ca.

by Sam Hand would you give them? If you can view your trade as a career rather than a stopover job, then you should be able to find the right employer that will allow you to progress as time goes on. Don’t settle working for someone who doesn’t motivate you.

What motivated you to get into this career? I was motivated to begin trade school when I realized I was enjoying my summer carpentry jobs more than my university studies, and could get paid to do it! Was there someone who got you excited about this path? A few of my closest friends all took similar paths to mine; attempting university before deciding that trades was the way to go. We’ve all motivated each other over the years. Was there a class in secondary school that helped you more proficient at the work you do now? Learning basic trigonometry in high school math turned out to be useful when learning about complicated roof construction. I never took any shop classes in high school, but learning how to use power tools at that age would have been useful. What was it like to go to post-secondary school and work at the same time? It made going to school a nobrainer, especially after paying university tuition the year before. I think having a financial incentive to go to school helps a lot of people go who might not otherwise be able to. What is the best part of being in your trade?

Joel is putting his skills to work installing solar panels Being able to see a project on paper and then make it happen in real life. Moving around outside away from a desk is nice as well. What does a regular day look like for you in your job? I manage construction solar panel installation crews now for Solvest, so that mostly involves meeting clients, planning out jobs and staying on top of inventory. I also get on the roof from time to time. I still do some “traditional” carpentry projects on the side, but after 10 years of residential work I am enjoying a new challenge in an exciting industry that is still all about construction. If you met someone who was looking at getting a job in the trades, what piece of advice

How has your trade, if it has, made your life better? My trade has allowed me to work with all kinds of interesting people from all over the world and this has helped make me a more open-minded person. I have been lucky to work all over Canada in my current job for Solvest; there has never been a boring day so far! What is the most interesting thing/project you have worked on? Carpentry related: helping build a scribed log cabin on the side of a mountain in Atlin was amazing. Solar related: Supervising construction of the largest solar farm in Manitoba was a pretty cool project to be a part of.
