Lawrence Millman, standing, at the Alchemy Café in July 2019

L

awrence Millman is a man of many talents. As an author, he has written 16 books, including Last Places, A Kayak Full of Ghosts, An Evening Among Headhunters, Lost in the Arctic and Hiking to Siberia. The latter is the main subject of this column and the source of most of the stories Millman read to an attentive audience at the Alchemy Café when he visited Dawson City last July. Millman reads well and inserts asides into his own essays. He is fascinated, not just by our North, but by any north, which means the stories in this book involve more than his Yukon journeys. By training Millman is a mycologist. He has studied fungi all over the world. His experience

with Yukon mushrooms dates from some of the big fires between Dawson and the burn just south of Braeburn, from a time when Shawn Ryan was better known as a mushroom-finder than as the goldfinder he has since become. Some of that tale is told in “Mush Rush.” One of the strangest of all Millman’s Yukon stories is that of the Russian woman whose Anglicized name was Lillian Alling. Fresh off the boat in New York, she set out to return to her native Siberia. Since Millman first tried to follow her, in the essay which gave this book its title, there have been other attempts, including magazine articles, a graphic novel and several full-length books. Alling lived in Dawson for a while before setting off to the Bering Sea in a

boat. While here, she worked at St. Paul’s hostel and at the original hospital. Another European who finally washed up in Dawson was the Czech storyteller Jan Welzl, whose fantastical adventures took place before the First World War in what he claimed were several Alaskan native villages. Welzl’s stories were printed by a couple of Czech reporters in a book called Thirty Years in the Golden North. It was a Book of the Month Club selection when the English translation appeared in 1932, but Welzl had sold his stories and got no royalties. When he decided to make his way back to where he had been happy, Dawson was as cont’d on page 3 ...

far as he got. There is an elaborately decorated grave in Dawson, a pilgrimage site for many eastern Europeans who hail from the former Austo-Hungarian Empire where Welzl was born. We’re not sure if it’s actually his, but it’s probably more credible than his stories. The rest of Millman’s collection doesn’t relate so strongly to the Klondike, but it’s great stuff. Millman has a mountain named after him outside Tasiilaq, in eastern Greenland. His work has appeared in Yukon News, Smithsonian, National Geographic Adventure, Atlantic Monthly, Sports Illustrated and many other publications. Dan Davidson has been writing about books for Yukon publications since 1977. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

rowing a beard that contends for the winning length in the “Old Growth” category of the Strength and Style competition takes years of preparation, literally. The current favourite to take home the prize is 77-year old Paul Rousseau, who placed second in 2014 and 2019, but has won all other competitions in between. Rousseau is also a bit of an enigmatic champion--never pre-registering for the event and appearing out of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) night each year to have his beard measured. In fact, YSR doesn’t even have his contact information, so tracking Rousseau down was a celebration of simpler Yukon times of communication. He’s notable at various cof-

Measuring Up!

Rousseau notes that both losses were due to quirks that affected his measurement. In 2014, he had his beard in a braid, which shortened the length and in 2019 the rules were adjusted. “Last year 2019, they changed the rules and went with width,” he said with a chuckle. “Everybody told me I got ripped off because old growth is supposed to be length.” Rousseau admits his facial hair growth was a mustache at 19-years

Be prepared for the armpit inspection and emcee since.” As one of the oldest events YSR puts on, that is popular every year, Hickman noted that it’s just a really fun event that encompsses the northern experience in the winter. “I think it captures the “cabin fever” aspect of living in the North in a fun way,” Hickman explained. “The things that people never talk about when winter hits--not shaving (whether that be legs, face, armpits, etc.) We’re also a crazy artistic community and the Tattoo night gives people the opportunity to show off their canvas and talk a bit about it. “My favorite part of the event is trying to deal with my own beard envy as I watch all of the magnificently grown facial hair parade across the stage.” Hickman also noted they’re bringing back the strength aspect

And Rousseau has some tips for aspiring lengthy beard growers, sharing that you can’t just let it go. “You don’t want it to go past the belt,” he said. “It gets too brittle and gets caught in your zipper. My beard now is no longer than I was in 2015.” The event is organized and championed by current YSR presi-

to the competition this year, with planking and wall sits as it hasn’t had that component since armwrestling was dropped several years ago. Strength and Style is split over February 18 and 19, both the Town & Mountain (T&M) hotel from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Competitors can register for $10 per category ahead of time at yukonrendezvous.com, or in person. The T&M will be charging an entry fee at the door. And as too presumptive beard favourite Rousseau and his intention for that evening? There might be an opening for first prize contention in 2021. “I’ll go next month and, win or lose, I’ll go to my barber, who hasn’t seen me in many years and I will cut the beard,” Rousseau admitted. “I will have a mustache. ❑ 1 Tablespoon butter ❑ 4 flour tortillas

PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy

ggs cooked two ways folded into gooey cheesy rice studded with soft onions and jalapenos then folded into a toasted flour tortilla. It’s a bit labor-intensive for a busy weekday morning, but these wraps make an ideal late breakfast on a lazy weekend. Serves 4

❑ 1 onion, chopped ❑ 1/2 Cup cooked rice ❑ 6 eggs, divided ❑ 2/3 Cup cheese and pepper to ❑ Salt taste

Cheese and jalapenos

Chopped onions and jalapenos

1

Add the bacon to the rice mixture

Top with a runny fried egg

METHOD Cook bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat, remove the bacon from the pan, drain on paper towels and pour out all but 1 Tablespoon of bacon fat. Return the pan to the heat and add jalapeno and onion, cook until soft - about 6 minutes - then add cooked rice. Beat two eggs then add the beaten eggs and half the cheese to the rice, cook until the eggs are set then season to taste with salt and pepper and remove from heat.

2 3

Place a non-stick pan over medium-high heat, break the eggs into the pan and cook until the whites are set and the yolks are runny. Remove from heat.

Heat a large skillet over high heat, place a tortilla in the skillet and sprinkle with 1/4 of remaining cheese, and top with 1/4 of rice mixture then one fried egg. Cook until tortilla

is crisp and cheese is melted (about 3 minutes). Carefully slice tortilla onto a plate and fold tortilla around filling. Repeat with remaining ingredients and serve.

Fold and serve

nyone who says they can’t make bannock hasn’t really tried. It’s super simple. Everyone has the ingredients in their pantry and should make a point to have those same ingredients in a mouse–proof container in the camping box, or at the cabin. Depending on your preference, there are a number of ways to make it.

Dumplings Same prep as above, but spoon the dough on top of your almostready stew, or chili and put the lid back on for about 15 minutes. Check them for doneness if this is a first time for you. This is a special treat at moose camp, or elsewhere on the land.

Bannock by the loaf 6 cups flour 5 teaspoons baking powder 3 teaspoons salt ½ cup white sugar 4 cups water 2 eggs

All it takes is two cups of flour, less than a tsp of salt and about a tsp of baking powder. Mix in water slowly until you have a pasty (not gooey) ball of dough. This is bannock as plain as you can get. Use multiples of the ingredients to make a bigger batch. Use a large serving spoon to scoop out individual gobs and drop them into a centimetre of hot cooking oil in any pan. Lard if great because it cooks at a higher temperature, but any cooking oil works. Dip the spoon in the oil to keep it from sticking to the pieces as you flatten them, or move them away from others—they are harder to turn over and/or the oil splashes if they are connected to others in the pan. Take a few peeks at the bottom side. When brown, carefully (to avoid a hot oil splash) turn them over. I turn them as many times as is necessary to make sure they are done and not burned. Remove them and let

Mix it all together to make a dough and spoon into a greased bread pan. Bake at 350 for 1 ¾ hours. Be aware that ovens vary in temperature, so yours might be 10 minutes more or less. Additions here an include raisins, dried blueberries, shredded cheese, chopped green onions, garlic, etc. I pour the pan half full and then coat the top with brown sugar. After filling the pan with the remaining dough, I sprinkle more brown sugar on top of the full pan. Feel free to make changes to suit your tastes. You won’t find anything much simpler to make!

them cool somewhat before serving. At home the cooling can be done on a paper towel. At camp, you can use a log or a rock. Of course, any bannock can include additions such as raisins, currants, dried fruit, fresh fruit, chopped onions, cheese, or bacon. If not gooey, this dough can be wrapped around a stick and cooked over a campfire.

Here come the mushers

Yukon Quest Thousand Mile International Sled Dog Race, on King Solomon’s Dome south of Dawson City

The Yukon Quest takes over Whitehorse the week of Feb. 9 by Amber Church

T

he Yukon Quest has been described as the hardest sled dog race in the world. Mushers and their teams of up to 14 canine athletes travel 1,000 miles of wild and difficult terrain between Fairbanks, Alaska, and Whitehorse, Yukon. And they do it in some of the coldest and most unpredictable weather conditions.

Luckily the Yukon Quest organizers have created a series of events so the public can get involved with this iconic event without the risk of frostbite or sleep deprivation. The public can enjoy dogsledding rides on Sunday, Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shipyards Park. Muktuk Adventures and Sky High Wilderness Ranch are offering free rides throughout the day. Quest Fest takes place at the Frank Slim Building at Shipyards Park from Monday, Feb. 10 to Friday, Feb. 14. A full slate of events will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday). “Fans of the race can come by

and enjoy everything from free dogsledding rides, kids’ arts and crafts, and films, to presentations from Yukon Quest veterans and more,” said Shayna Hammer, executive director of the Yukon Quest. “These events are all free and great for all ages.” Quest Fest is followed by the Meet the Mushers event on Feb. 14 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Mount McIntyre. “All ages are welcome to come and meet the 2020 mushers,” said Hammer. “They can purchase a 2020 poster and get it signed by their favourite musher, or all of the ones in attendance. Enjoy the camaraderie that mushers bring to this post-race soiree. Yukon Quest merchandise will be available for sale and there will be a cash bar with light refreshments available.” For those who want to see some of the race action, the finish line is located in Shipyards Park. “Based on previous stats, we expect the first team to arrive in Whitehorse on Monday, Feb. 10 in the afternoon,” said Hammer. “The best way to keep updated on when teams are expected in is to

keep an eye on the tracker on our website (YukonQuest.com), or to follow along on Facebook or Twit-

ter as we post live updates. We will capture each team’s finish through Facebook Live and photos as well.” The 2020 Yukon Quest wraps up at the Finish and Awards Banquet. This ticketed event takes place at the Yukon Convention Centre on Feb. 15 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.. There, mushers take the stage in the order they crossed the finish line and share stories about the race experience. Some mushers receive awards based on their performance. These include the Veterinarians’ Choice Award, Dawson Award, Rookie of the Year Award, Challenge of the North Award, Sportsmanship Award, Red Lantern Award, Golden Harness Award and the award for the Champion. Tickets are $90. They are available through the Yukon office in the White Pass building, by phone at (867) 668-4711, or by email at yukonoperations@yukonquest. com.

Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Deep roots— Colleen James looks to the land for sustenance, guidance and solace by Leighann Chalykoff

er name is Wolf Mother, Ghoóch Tlâ in Tlingit, and Colleen James in English. When James looks at the mountains around Carcross she sees the place where she picked berries with her grandmother as a child; the place that shows her what the weather will bring; and the place that guides her decision-making. “My old people say that mountain will tell you what the weather is going to do,” she said, point-

ing to the peak they call Gopher Mountain. “They would watch the water and it would tell them; the birds would tell them; the fire would tell them. There was a universal language. “So, my life story with that mountain has evolved as I grow and I’m sure it’ll evolve more.” James grew up in Cowley, about halfway between Whitehorse and Carcross. Her mother was Tlingit and her father was English. “Life was pretty good. My parents and grandparents took good care of me, but my mother attended mission school and so my path was a lot more challenging because of that.” James said she was “at-risk” as a teenager. She had her first child at a young age. Having to care for her daughter helped to ground her and steer her away from risky behaviour. It was then that she found her culture. “I’m very blessed that my grandmother didn’t go to residential school,” she said. “She was my rock and taught me everything she could about the culture, the language, and our ways of knowing and being on this land. She was at the tail-end of the really old people, so I got to hear those stories that my old people say.” James stopped drinking before she was 18 because she found something better. She immersed herself in her culture by learning about the stories, the language and the ceremonies. “I remember my grandmother would take me on the yearly round, meaning that we followed the berries, followed the birds, followed the fish, followed the animals, followed the plants that

When Carcross/Tagish First Nation (C/TFN) voted against its initial land claim agreement, James went to the water for help. “I was told to go to the river, the lake, and to cry in it. Let your tears go into it. It will work with you. So, on the day of voting, I went across the river to my old town site and I went down to the water and I prayed. I said, ‘we’re afraid, we’re scared, we don’t know what’s coming and we’re not sure it’s the right deal. Help us.’ And the answer was no, so the vote was no.” Though the answer was no at that time, C/TFN did eventually

settle its final land claim agreements. The First Nation became self-governing in 2006. This strong connection to the land runs in James’ family. For example, her uncle was part of the delegation that brought “Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow” to Ottawa in 1973. It was the landmark document that would lay the foundation for Yukon First Nation land claims. “He told me that when they accepted the document, when it was going to go, the building just shook—it was a clap of thunder and lightning right above them,” she said. “He said every hair on his body stood up because he knew it was Yukon spirits of the land and the water acknowledging what those people were trying to do in Ottawa.” Today, James spends her time caring for her family, volunteering in the community and working for her First Nation. She focuses on ensuring the land and the water are preserved for future generations through her work on various boards and committees.

Among other roles, she works as a representative on the Steering Committee for Conrad Historic Site, located on the west side of Windy Arm, 16 kilometres from Carcross. Conrad was a traditional fishing, hunting and camping site used by the Tagish Kwan and Tlingit people. It also became a shortlived mining town in the early 1900s, and remnants of its mining history (buildings and equipment) can still be seen in the area today. C/TFN’s final agreement states that Conrad be established as a historic site that’s co-owned and co-managed by the First Nation and the Government of Yukon. “Through involvement on the committee I’ve learned a lot more about the Conrad Historic Site, both its pre-contact history and its mining history,” said James. “My knowledge of the culture and the land use of the area has grown and I want to see the co-management be successful and celebrate the history of both cultures that have used the site and will continue to use it into the future.” James is also involved in a C/ TFN project to revitalize the Tlingit and Tagish languages by remembering and using Tlingit and Tagish place names. “The more we revitalize our language, we discover knowledge that’s been there for a long time,” she said. This work is important to her. It’s the land and the culture that she promotes for her family and community. “Imagine a world where people feel like there’s enough. That they’re good enough, that they’re smart enough, that they’re beautiful enough,” she said. “If we feel like we’re part of the land and a part of the water, we might treat nature more kindly.” Heritage Conversations columnist Leighann Chalykoff is a Yukon writer chronicling projects and people preserving Yukon’s history. This column is sponsored by Government of Yukon, Historic Sites unit.

Pinoys on Parliament

Young Yukoners will join their fellow Filipino-Canadians in Ottawa for a national leadership conference

by Amber Church

F

rom February 21 to 23, young Filipino-Canadians will converge on Ottawa for a youthled national leadership conference. Pinoys on Parliament will bring together 200 delegates from coast to coast to coast. “Pinoys on Parliament was born out of the idea that although Filipinos compose one of the largest minority groups in Canada, they are still widely underrepresented,” said Ira Mamis, Yukon College student and board member of the Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon. “As the first national leadership conference for young Filipino-Canadians, the main goal is to bring young people in our community together to talk about the importance of leadership and representation, and how it can further improve our lives in Canada. Pinoys on Parliament believes that there are many emerging leaders in our community and (it believes in) the importance of providing them with the space, the platform and the resources to help them succeed.” Nine Yukon youth, ranging in age from 16 to 28, will attend Pinoys on Parliament. Mamis said the Filipino population in the Yukon has grown in the last 10 years. Mamis sees Pinoys on Parliament as an opportunity for that population to come together with other aspiring leaders from all over the country to talk about Filipino representation, culture, politics and be in the presence of members of parliament, senators and other aspiring Filipino leaders in Canada. “Aside from building connections with other delegates and professionals from other provinces and territories, participants will also have the opportunity to explore landmarks in Ottawa as well as engage with the Filipino community in the city.” The Yukoners attending the conference are Mamis, Irelle Mamis, Genard Hermosa, Mel Moya, Andrie Regis, Tatiana Cabiso, Jealyn Minguito, Hanz Alojipan and Jamvee Madrigal.

Hopefully, after this conference, we can inspire other youth to join as well.” Moya, an athlete in the Canadian- Filipino Association, saw

Pinoys on Parliament as an opportunity to meet others in the Filipino community and to be able to travel to Canada’s capital. Regis, 19, is excited to meet and mingle with other young Filipinos who have the same interests, passions and backgrounds. “I can’t wait to share and hear everyone’s experiences and stories and the friendships that will form from this conference,” he said. Cabiso, a 19-year-old who plans to pursue a bachelor of science in

nursing, said she didn’t hear much about events like this when she was growing up. “This is a great opportunity for Filipinos from the North, to share our ideas and opinions that could potentially help improve our lives here in Canada. I’m also very excited to meet my fellow Filipinos, build friendships and learn more about Filipino representations, culture, and politics. As I take part in Pinoys on Parliament, I am looking forward to engaging with the

other participants and (being) in an environment where I can learn things that will shape me as an individual and in my future career.” Minguito, who is in grade 12 at F.H. Collins Secondary School, sees Pinoys on Parliament as an opportunity to acquire new knowledge about the importance of leadership. “I am looking forward to learning new ideas from the leaders and speakers, and also to be inspired by them during the conference,” she said. “I also can’t wait to try beavertails while in Ottawa!” Hanz Alojipan came to Canada in January 2019. He goes to Vanier Catholic Secondary School, where he’s in grade 11. “This is also my first time meeting Filipinos from different parts of Canada and I can’t wait to build relationships and friendships from across the country,” he said. “By the end of the conference, I hope we can inspire other young immigrants to build relationships with one another and participate in opportunities like Pinoys on Parliament.” Madrigal, another Vanier student in grade 11, also looks forward to meeting new people from across the country and inspiring one another. The Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Dance on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Days Inn (2288 2nd Ave, Whitehorse). This event will be hosted by the youth of Pinoys on Parliament and will serve as a fundraising opportunity for the conference. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Ira Mamis at (867) 334-8026, or Alren Barredo, (867) 334-0718.
