Isolation, underwear fights and hanging around the house Theatre in the Bush turns 10 by Heather LeDuc

W

onderful things can emerge from isolation. Just ask Brian Fidler about the summer he came up with the idea of Ramshackle Theatre’s Theatre in the Bush, which turns 10 this year. The popular

multi-disciplinary show takes place every fall on the property Fidler shares with his family. “Theatre in the Bush began when our youngest son, Jacob, was just a baby and I had taken a lot of time off,” Fidler says. “I was just around the house for summer and hanging around with him and trying to get him to sleep. And so it was interesting because it was a time of isolation for me. I found myself walking around the property here and looking at spots and thinking ‘That would make a great spot for a little show.’” When fall came around and Fidler didn’t have any work and wanted to do something close to home, the idea was born. The first year, Fidler invited people he knew to participate in a show on the property. The audience members were mostly friends of the performers. That night, and every show since then, there have been many memorable moments. “Miche Genest did some lovely stuff with food down at the wall tent … mixing ingredients and getting people to create recipes to give to each other,” Fidler says. Another special memory involved Fidler’s partner, Emily Woodruffe. “Emily was in a show and she never does any public performance. But her friend Susan Walton

convinced her to do a synchronized swimming piece and she just had so much fun doing it. It was really fun and neat to see her performing.” One year, when performer Hazel Venzon divided the audience into two groups and invited them to sling (clean) underwear at one another, the ensuing ruckus became a highlight for Fidler. “It was delightful,” he says. “People were so into it.” Some performances are poetic and beautiful rather than madcap. In 2019, one of the outdoor “stages” had a pile of leaves from which dancer Chris Green slowly and unexpectedly emerged, while Karen Zaidan sang. “It was super powerful,” Fidler says. Theatre in the Bush was also showcased at national events. These were significant milestones for a Yukon show with humble beginnings. In 2016, Theatre in the Bush was part of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival when it came to Whitehorse. As Fidler says, Magnetic North is “a really big deal in the theatre world.” Magnetic North led to Ramshackle Theatre being invited to take the show to Ottawa for Canada Scene, a national cultural festival for Canada 150 celebrations. Thirteen Yukoners presented three sold-out shows in McKenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park. In Ottawa, Fidler said the Ramshackle crew was constrained by estate rules, which restricted them from altering the grounds in any way. This is in sharp contrast to the show’s Yukon setting. “If we need a little brush cleared (here), I get my chainsaw out and we clear it,” says Fidler. Theatre in the Bush also has

very few creative constraints. Artists are limited only by the amount of time they have (10 minutes), and the space they have to do it in. “I don’t tell them what they’re going to do, and they don’t tell me what they’re going to do,” Fidler says. “That’s part of the magic of it for me.” Could Theatre in the Bush go on for another 10 years? “Yeah, so long as Emily allows me and is interested in doing it,” Fidler says. “There’s always new people coming to the territory who have interesting perspectives and who want to perform and experiment.” As for the impact of COVID on the 2020 version of Theatre in the Bush, Fidler has adjusted by offering two nights of live shows instead of one. He’s also broadcasting a film version on Sunday, Sept. 27. Fidler is philosophical about Theatre in the Bush’s 10th year coinciding with a pandemic. “It’s an interesting parallel for our 10th year that we’ve all had to spend so much time around our houses. So for me it makes sense to celebrate the 10th anniversary around the house.” The line-up for the 2020 show is available at RamshackleTheatre. ca. While ticket sales for Theatre in the Bush live shows are closed, folks can request a link to the broadcast version by emailing Fidler at ramshackletheatre@ gmail.com.

door venues are being redesigned for smaller audiences. Perennial favourites are returning, with some adjustments and modifications. Thanks to the inventiveness of the people who present them, the shows will go on.

The shows must go on! ... continued from page 5 be presented each weekend from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31. The shorter episodes allow for three shows a night and smaller audiences. The Born-Again Crow will also be live-streamed and filmed, to be shared with a wider audience.

f    Nakai Theatre Fall is a quieter time for Nakai, but that doesn’t mean artistic director Jacob Zimmerman hasn’t been busy. Zimmerman, along

with other Nakai staff, have been trying to lay the foundation for future programming, at a time when the future is uncertain. Right now, Nakai has plans for something similar to its annual 24Hour Challenge, likely for the first weekend of November. Zimmerman isn’t sure exactly what it will look like this year, but Nakai is “committed to the spirit of the event,” which gives people 24 hours to get creative and share the results with one another.

Certain traditions (including the event-ending communal meal) might be impossible this year, but, on the bright side, Zimmerman says more people might be able to participate if the event is online. The forced downtime has also given Nakai the chance to focus on long-term plans, which include a partnership with Gwaandak Theatre. Nakai is also offering workshops in digital literacy for the arts sector. Online skills are important for artists, who need to be comfortable with the digital reality, says Zimmerman, a selfprofessed geek. Proficiency with Excel may not seem very exciting, but he says it helps when it comes to making theatre happen. Brave New Words is also being reconsidered for the fall. The monthly gathering for writers may go ahead as an web-based event, but Zimmerman is conscious that some people are experiencing online fatigue. Nakai is also building towards the Pivot Festival in early 2021, locking a few things down, while recognizing that even the best-laid plans may need to change.

As for new presenters, Fidler says some great submissions are coming in, but it’s too early to announce the line-up. For people who can’t make it to the shows, Theatre in the Bush will be filmed by Brendan Preston, with Elyssia Sasaki directing. Fidler is also planning to workshop a new piece called A Crazy Little Puppet Show About Death,

featuring Death as a finger puppet. Death will debut in a snippet with Velvet Antler Productions at the Guild’s ‘Round Back series, with the full piece being presented later in the year.

Old dog, new tricks

Advanced Artist Award

H

ercule Poirot, the famous Belgian detective of Agatha Christie’s novels, said “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” I was a bit surprised recently, to find that I can indeed learn new things even when I feel like an old dog. When I retired, the little grey cells were feeling stagnant (I’d love to borrow some of Poirot’s little grey cells, though he can keep his moustache). I often imagined retirement as an opportunity for endless learning and reading. Instead, my days were dissolving into the seemingly endless and definitely mindless puttering abyss. You may know what I mean—start with one thing, start another, go back to the first thing, watch TV, surf the web and so on. Aside from learning the new language of bridge, it was definitely time to wake up. I decided to explore the online world of education. I dabbled in some of the YouTube learning videos, but there wasn’t quite enough structure for me. That’s when I discovered Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs. MOOCs are generally offered by well-known and lesser-known universities. There are video lectures, related readings and quizzes that you can take (or not). Many of the courses have set start dates, but during the week you can go at your own pace. If you fall behind, some courses will let you restart the due dates. Some will even let you download the lectures and the course materials so you can learn at leisure. I tend not to do that as otherwise (see above note about puttering). If you want to engage more with other students around the world, or send questions for clarification, there are forums associated with the courses. I don’t use these features as I am not aiming for a grade or a certificate, but the option is usually open. The length of each course is varied. Usually the video lectures are little more than an hour a week. The newer MOOCs tend

supports advanced individual Yukon artists for creation, artistic development, and learning opportunities. There are two deadlines per year: 1st April and October. The application form and guidelines are available on our website. Applicants are encouraged to consult an Arts Advisor before applying.

Never too late to learn some new tricks to break those down into videos ranging from six to ten minutes. You can start again from where you left off, which is a great boon when it’s time for online bridge, or the phone rings, or the timer chimes, or the smoke from the oven tells you something is burnt. Many of the MOOCs are free if you do not want a certificate. Some of the more popular courses which require more engagement with the prof do cost; creative writing is one example. After the courses, you will often be asked to do a short survey, whether or not you finished the course. To me doing the survey is an easy way to pay back the institution. The best way to access a MOOC is by downloading an application (or app), but you can often just use your web browser. Some of the better-known MOOC providers are edX, Coursera, Khan Academy and Udacity. I have never tried the last one, but I have tried the first three. The nice thing about MOOCs is the range of interests you can explore. For example, I’ve taken the following courses and finished most of them: • History, structure and challenges of the European Union (University of Paris) • Origins of Common Law (University of London) • Greek philosophers (Wellesley College) • Greek and Roman sculpture (Yale University)

PHOTO: Pixabay

• History of Christianity in North Africa (can’t remember the university) I am currently working on renewing my acquaintance with sociology through an introductory course from the University of Amsterdam. I’m almost finished, although I am dreading a rather massive final exam. No consequences if I fail, other than a blow to the little that remains of my pride, but I would like to know if I retained anything from the eight-week-stretched-intotwelve-week course. There are courses in data, sciences, health, humanities, arts, philosophy, history, computer science/information technology, business, math and logic, governance and society, law and the list goes on. I suspect that many providers will increasingly charge for the courses, but for now it’s so much fun to explore my rather eclectic interests at no, or low cost. Next on my list is the Yukon First Nations course offered by Yukon University. It costs a bit more than other MOOCs, but in this case the offering is unique and important. After that maybe I’ll brush up on my algebra, or dive into the history of medieval Europe, or who knows what? The world of learning awaits! Deborah McNevin is a Whitehorse-based writer.

Cocktails with Latitude with Jennifer Tyldesley

Crisp, colourful autumn cocktails T

he inspiration for this column started back in the early days of this pandemic, when a friend challenged me to create cocktails with the obscure bottles that one often finds in the back of one’s liquor cabinet. That fun, 14-day social media challenge has now become a monthly recipe round-up here in What’s Up Yukon.

In this, my sixth column, I am officially re-naming the series to match Free Pour Jenny’s official tagline, which I dreamed up last year: Cocktails with Latitude. I founded my small business in 2016 after retiring from a career as a military pilot and airline pilot. In flying, latitude is, as you might expect, really important. These days, I look at latitude in a different way, from here on the ground. I’m passionate about creating products that contain the unique ingredients of our northern climate and reflect its character. Along these lines, in most of the country it’s still summer, but here in the Yukon, we all know that fall has arrived. Although that won’t be official until late October, these cocktails are inspired by the crisp, cool colours of autumn.

Birch Apple Mule Here’s my riff on the wellknown Moscow Mule. This version uses some of my favourite fall flavours, including birch syrup, apple cider and cranberry. Ingredients • 1 1/2 oz vodka • 1/2 oz birch syrup • 8 drops FPJ Cranberry Bitters • 1 oz apple cider • 3-4 oz ginger beer • Apple slice (soaked in lemon juice)

Instructions Place vodka, syrup and bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until well chilled. Strain into a mule mug with fresh ice. Top with apple cider and ginger beer. Stir gently. Garnish with an apple slice.

Archangel This cocktail was created in 2006 by Michael McIlroy and Richard Boccato of NYC’s Milk & Honey. It is inspired by pink gin, another one of my favourite liba-

tions. It’s a strong drink and, as you might suspect, it is bitter. I have increased that attribute with the addition of some Fireweed Bitters.

Instructions Shake all ingredients with ice until well chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with a preserved cherry or edible flower.

Ingredients • 2 ¼ oz gin • 3/4 oz Aperol • 2 slices cucumber • 5 drops FPJ Fireweed Bitters • Lemon peel Instructions Add Aperol and cucumber to a mixing glass. Muddle the ingredi-

Add gin and bitters, along with some ice. Stir until well chilled. Double strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a piece of lemon peel.

Autumn in the Yukon I have adapted this lovely creation by using Canadian ingredients. The original is called “Autumn in the City,” by Moody Mixologist, Amy Traynor.

I love the flavour of highbush cranberries. To me, nothing signals the arrival of fall quite like seeing them dotting the forest landscape. Making a syrup and then straining it removes those pesky seeds and creates a fantastic, brightly-coloured cocktail ingredient! To create a boozy version, just add the optional vodka. Ingredients • 1 1/2 oz vodka (optional – do not use for mocktail version!) • 1/2 oz highbush cranberry & clove simple syrup * • 2 oz white grape juice • 3 oz soda water • 12 drops FPJ Solstice Bitters • 1 thin half-slice lemon Instructions Stir together all liquid ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon slice. cont’d on page 13 ...

*A few notes on alcohol consumption: these cocktails are strong and they should be consumed in moderation. One serving of spirits is 1 ½ oz. A good rule of thumb is to have a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage. Cheers! Jennifer Tyldesley is the cocktail genius behind locally-crafted Free Pour Jenny’s Bitters.

Garlic in the Yukon: It’s a Thing!

Planting garlic early April in our raised bed. Put cloves in 6” apart and space rows 1’ apart

t

Beautiful, freshly harvested garlic

by Meredith Winkelaar

A

re you sick of buying the bland garlic that comes from overseas? Do you seek out the nice rosey BC garlic when it occasionally makes its way into our grocery stores? Then it’s time to grow your own garlic. It’s possible here in the Yukon to plant a clove in the spring and have a beautifully cured bulb by mid August! We’ve tried a couple of different ways and found that the following works for us. Garlic is a rewarding plant to grow and fun to show off.

Planting One fun fact about garlic is that it does not produce trueseed; it is sterile. It is reproduced vegetatively (similar to potatoes)

by harvesting and planting the cloves from the parent plant. There are two types of cultivated garlic (Allium sativum): hardneck garlic and softneck garlic. They can be differentiated by the stiffness of the stalk growing in the center of the cloves. Imported garlic is typically of the softneck type whereas domestic garlic production is largely hardneck. Hardneck varieties such as ‘Music’ are cold-hardy, make large cloves, have great taste, and store well. In warmer climates hardneck garlic is planted around Thanksgiving and harvested the next summer. Up here the winter is too cold and the spring freeze/thaw cycle too harsh to do that successfully. We try to get our garden

bed ready in the fall so that we can plant our cloves in the spring as soon as the snow has melted and the ground is not frozen. We aim for early April. Raised beds help as the soil warms up faster in the spring. Break your bulbs apart into cloves shortly before planting and make sure to leave the skin on! This is called ‘cracking’ the garlic. Plant the clove, pointy side up, about 2” below the soil surface. Plant cloves 6” apart and rows a foot apart. We build a plastic low-tunnel over our beds and this heats everything up a bit more and gives the garlic a boost. We take the plastic off once the garlic is 4-6” tall and it’s warmer outside.

Watering Garlic is not a plant-it and forget-it vegetable. It needs regular watering throughout its growing season. If they don’t get enough water, you’ll end up with smaller bulbs. It’s important to stop watering a couple of weeks before harvesting. Too much water at the end prolongs the drying and curing stage.

Removing Scapes Hardneck garlic produces a long, hard stem with a spearshaped flower at the end called the scape. It starts to grow loops and once there are 1-2 loops it’s good to snap these off. It lets the

plant put its energy into producing a bigger bulb. Garlic scapes taste great, I love cutting them up and putting them into a stir-fry or making a pesto out of them.

Harvesting It’s time for the most exciting part, the harvest. Your garlic is probably ready to harvest if the scapes were removed 2-3 weeks earlier and the bottom 4-6 leaves have turned brown. Loosen soil with a shovel and pull straight up on the lower stem. If you leave your garlic in the ground too long, it will start rotting.

Diyet van Lieshout, singer, bassist and band leader for Diyet and the Love Soldiers Robert van Lieshout, who plays acoustic guitar, drums and percussion, and Juno award-winning producer Bob Hamilton on electric guitar, pedal steel guitar and mandolin. The group had been exploring ideas for a music video to complement and capture the essence of “Brave Face” when Robert had the idea to create a compilation of close-ups of people’s faces. The band members liked the idea and enlisted the help of well-known local photographer and visual storyteller Allistair Maitland. From there, [Maitland’s] creative mind took over and created a stunning montage of living portraits, according to the frontwoman. The simple yet powerful video project shows faces of people from many different walks of life, of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. Van Lieshout’s own background is an important part of her artistic presence, as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage all hold sources of inspiration for her when it comes to creating music and telling stories. “The human face can tell you

an entire story in a few seconds. That connection is an undeniable force,” van Lieshout said in a press release for the video. “The lyrics in ‘Brave Face’ acknowledge my own feelings around loss and trauma, but serve as a reminder that joy is literally right in front of us too. I wanted to extend that to others who were hurting. You aren’t alone.” While van Lieshout says her band hopes to be able to get back out on the road to tour and perform again by the end of the year, or at least early on in 2021, they refuse to sit idly until then, and hope to record some new music in the meantime. While their 2018 record was the first release under the Diyet and the Love Soldiers moniker, van Lieshout had previously released two other albums, 2010’s The Breaking Point and 2013’s When You Were King, simply under the name Diyet. “Brave Face” was preceded by two other singles, titled “We’re Still Here” and “Two Little Birds.” For van Lieshout, music is more than just a career. Her creativity shapes everything she does. Her life is defined by her art.

“I’d say I’ve always been looking at life from a creative lens,” she said. “I have so many influences that are musical and nonmusical and they continue to shape and inspire me to sing.” The music video for “Brave Face” is available on YouTube, on Diyet and the Love Soldiers’ channel. T

his July, Diyet and the Love Soldiers released a video project to accompany their song, “Brave Face.” The track was the third single and opener from the multi-stylistic group’s recent studio album, 2018’s Diyet and the Love Soldiers. The album had already received recent accolades including winning the Canadian Folk Music Award for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year and landing the band nominations for the Indigenous Music Award for Folk Album of the Year and the Western Canadian Music Awards for Indigenous Artist of the Year. Though Diyet and the Love Soldiers had their year’s touring plans scrapped, like many other bands and artists, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the changes that have come with it, singer, bassist and band leader Diyet van Lieshout says it’s as important as ever for artists to continue creating. “Music and art is what sustains the enduring human spirit when we are facing difficult challenges,” she said. “When our fears begin to subside, we will see a surge in new music, art and words. It will be exciting and I’m looking forward to it.” Diyet and the Love Soldiers is rounded off by van Lieshout’s husband and long-time collaborator

rowing things in the Yukon takes work. Well, most of the time it does. One notable exception is rhubarb, which flourishes with wild abandon in many Yukon gardens no matter how relentlessly it is harvested throughout the summer. Much of that harvest goes straight into pies, cobblers and crisps, or into the freezer to one day become pies, cobblers and crisps. For those out there looking to expand their rhubarb portfolio, here are two amazing canned rhubarb recipes you can stock your pantry with before the snow flies. cont’d on page 23 ...

A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow. "Kelly Reichardt's manifest-destiny epic in D minor...gives you the feeling that you've just witnessed a major work from a great American filmmaker."- David Fear, Rolling Stone

Back to (online) school

University students homeschool themselves by Tess Casher

The beginning of many readings for this semester new normal. Each course introduces The Great Camera Debate. By staring at a screen of classmates, or blank initials, students negotiate the peer pressure to turn their

cameras ‘on’ or ‘off.’ Group projects are reduced to a series of loving, but increasingly passiveaggressive, texts. While many students already wore sweatpants

to lectures, the online environment has taken pajama day to unexplored heights. In the midst of these happenings, I would like to formally propose the Yukon as

n a Friday night in midMarch, I was lingering in the cafeteria at my school in New Brunswick when a chorus of buzzing cellphones bounced through the room. Like many students, we learned the university ended in-person classes for the rest of the year. With visions of sleeping in and cancelled exams, we welcomed this news with applause and gleeful whoops. Little did we know that this Friday was our last day of pre-COVID normalcy for the rest of our university experience. The following week, said applause was replaced with socially-distanced tearful goodbyes. Arriving in a fleet of minivans, concerned parents flooded the campus to move their kids out of residence. Meanwhile, I scrambled to find summer storage, packed two bags to the brim and, after an unsuccessful battle with Expedia, woefully booked a new flight home to Whitehorse. After finishing the last school year online, university students are once again cracking open their computers to start the fall semester. This has led to a fascinating

Celebrating 35 years Serving Yukoners!

the premier location for post-secondary students to experience a global pandemic. Firstly, I’m spending an outrageous amount of time online. I’ve deleted the ‘Screen Time’ function from all my devices because, quite frankly, at this point, I just don’t want to know. While everyone’s social and academic life is confined to a 13-inch screen, as Yukoners, we have the best opportunity to escape to the outside world. I have the Yukon River in my backyard and an endless number of hikes and adventures in front of me. With heaps of trails and space, Yukoners have been socially distancing in the woods before it was cool (and a necessity). Between the stress of backto-back essays, I’ve developed my own therapeutic outdoor education curriculum. The Yukon is also the best place for students like me who are enrolled in schools in a later time zone. Although the time change turns 8 a.m. classes into presunrise, caffeine-induced feats of strength, it is the perfect way to prove your commitment to the course to your professor and ace your participation marks. Furthermore, midnight deadlines in the student’s local time zone add precious free hours to complete lastminute assignments. In addition to objectively being the perfect location to take online classes, the Yukon has the simple, but powerful, allure of being home. While I’m saying this in September and not in November’s dark drudgery, I’m excited to be in the territory for longer than a two-week winter break. I get to be here for the first snowfall, the twinkling lights in Shipyards Park and giant northern lights in the sky. This semester will have its unique challenges, but I’m grateful I get to experience those challenges north of 60. Tess Casher is a keen writer, cabin builder and English Literature student at Mount Allison University.

Here is what you can expect on your next visit: • Our RED door is our new temporary entrance. • You will be screened upon entry with a few simple questions. - Have you travelled out of the territory in the past 14 days? - Have you been in contact with any persons who have travelled out of the territory in the past 14 days? - Are you feeling sick? • We are limiting our customers to 5 persons at a time. • We ask that while shopping you keep a distance from others of at least 6ft. • Please only touch product you are planning to purchase • We are NOT accepting CASH at this time

Reflexology is MORE

than a ‘foot massage”.

with Murray Martin

It is a therapeutic application supporting your body’s efforts to function optimally.

Chicken ala king, fit for a king Y

ou can go to the grocery store and buy just about any frozen meal, but I have yet to find one that can compete with the old-fashioned home-cooked recipes. Last week I purchased a frozen chicken a la king. It did not set my taste buds afire. So, digging back into my boxes of old recipes, I found what I was looking for and set out to make a homemade old-fashioned version. I’ll never buy another frozen substitute again. One point I would suggest is check out all expiry dates on chicken. If you can get real, fresh unfrozen chicken, you will obtain the best results when cooking with chicken.

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

MAKE IT A HABIT Having good visibility on snowy roads can make all the difference. You will be able to see things clearly and avoid accidents and injuries. Here are a few tips to sharpen your vision and ensure a safe drive at night. First, check your lights. It is important to check your headlights that includes fog lamps, driving lights and brake lights if they are working properly before heading out. It is also important to visit your local mechanics if your vehicle requires to adjust or change your headlight bulb or if it requires some cleaning in order to have a safe and enjoyable drive.

10 bulbs in a bunch. Hang them somewhere warm and breezy but protected from the rain and direct sun. Good air circulation is important. It takes about 2-3 weeks for them to cure and the wrappers to dry. Our covered deck serves us well.

Storing

PHOTO: IMDb.com

The critically acclaimed Wendy and Lucy, starring Michelle Williams, is available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library

When the garlic is cured, it’s time to remove the tops, leaving 2-3” of stalk. Then peel off any dirty wrapper leaves and trim the roots if you like. We store our garlic in mesh bags in our basement. It’s a bit cooler than room temperature and relatively dry. Garlic that is well-cured should last over the winter. We were enjoying our last cloves in April! Planting and harvesting garlic is very satisfying and not as difficult as you may think. Make that bland garlic a thing of the past!
