It’s no surprise that the Guild theatre’s first indoor play of the season is about connection. It’s also about chronic depression, but it’s not depressing. The Guild’s artistic director, Brian Fidler, and production manager, Odile Nelson, are co-producing Every Brilliant Thing. They are both excited to offer audiences a play which addresses “this idea of connecting in isolation, which has kind of been the theme of 2020,” Fidler says.

very Brilliant Thing is a one-person play featuring a narrator telling their story and engaging the audience in the process. For the Guild production, two actors – Jane Gaudet and Michael Oliphant – will be taking turns playing the narrator. The play’s title refers to a list that the narrator begins compiling as a child when their mother is ill from chronic depression. The list comprises 10 brilliant things that make life worth living. The list continues to grow as the narrator becomes an adult and experiences their own mental health challenges. As part of their work to stage the play, Nelson and Fidler reached out to the Yukon division of the Canadian Mental Health

Association (CMHA) “to ensure what we present is aware and sensitive to the subject matter and how it could affect people,” says Nelson. Christine McKee of the CMHA met with them and attended two rehearsals. She appreciated the opportunity and praised the Guild for reaching out. “I loved it because it shows they’re really actively thinking about mental wellness and interested in playing a supportive role in what can be very challenging topics,” McKee says. And what did McKee think of the play? “I found it to be this super awesome mix of humour and sensitivity, and a great normal-

sion, which it is in this play. I think it’s wonderful.” McKee’s enthusiastic response is similar to Nelson’s description of Every Brilliant Thing. “The subject matter sounds really heavy and yet the experience of the play is so joyous and fun,” Nelson says, “That is really how it is.” Nelson, who is also directing the play, says that the structure of Every Brilliant Thing contributes to its appeal. “It’s hilarious and it’s delightful and it’s funny and it’s engaging,” Nelson says. Audience participation is key, but not terrifying or obtrusive. “It’s done in a very kind and gentle way and definitely by invitation,” Nelson says of the narrator’s engagement with audience members. “Their participation is integral, but what they’re asked to do is fairly minimal.” Nelson explains that the play is structured so that a relationship gradually builds between the narrator and the audience members, both as individuals and as a group. By the end of the play there’s a sense of connection shared amongst everyone in the theatre – a feeling that “we’re all in this together.”

ization of mental health. And [it’s] really interactive which is an excellent way to do it because it keeps everybody present and involved.” McKee adds that the play “offers a really non-intrusive platform for raising awareness and to

share strategies for healing.” “The more [mental health] is talked about in supportive ways, in creative ways, I’m very hopeful that people can feel safe in seeking guidance and support… I think it can only be a positive thing if it’s done with compas-

“We can still find for ourselves lots of small joys in life, and those small joys can really help us in dark times,” says Nelson, “And that’s the really uplifting side of the play.” One of Brian Fidler’s small joys is having audiences return to the Guild’s indoor stage after Covid-19 shut down productions last spring. There are some Covid-related adjustments; for

instance, audiences are seated cabaret-style. People have a “nice little table,” Fidler says, and a “spot to put their drink.” “It’s almost a little more civilized,” Fidler suggests, comparing the tables to the usual riser seating. “You don’t have to ask anyone to move.” Most importantly, the Guild is able to bring theatre to Yukoners. “My overwhelming feeling is excitement that we can still do this,” Fidler says. “We’ve had to cut our audience size down by quite a bit but that just means it’s going to be a wonderful, sort of intimate experience for our audience where they get a show just for them.” In the end, Fidler suggests the audience may be inspired to create lists of their own brilliant things. Nelson also is optimistic about audience response to the play. “I hope people come out feeling joy,” she says. “Hope and joy.”

hen you’re a working musician, a hobby always has the potential to become part of your pro kit. For Erica Mah, after roughly 10 years of dabbling with a traditional Chinese instrument called the guzheng, she’s now playing it for Whitehorse audiences. The guzheng is shaped like a narrow rectangle, about a metre and a half long, with 21, 25 or 26 strings. Each string has its own moveable bridge, which enables different tunings. The strings are plucked or strummed with the right hand, while the left hand modulates the sound. Although the guzheng was novel to Mah, it is a commonlyplayed instrument in China, where children learn it much as Canadian children learn piano, violin or guitar. Mah first encountered the guzheng at the house of a friend, then borrowed it and eventually bought her own. She found a teacher in the Lower Mainland where she lived at the time. Mah

most recently spent the month of October as the Jenni House resident, playing, composing and designing a visual art component to accompany her performance. Mah’s background in piano, guitar and several other instruments formed a solid base for learning the guzheng.

“It’s intuitive to me,” she says. “I play it much more like I would play a guitar. I use lots of chords, more rhythmic.” Tuning is an aspect of the instrument she continues to explore. Each string has an individual, moveable bridge, which can

be positioned in order to change the tuning. The guzheng is typically tuned in the pentatonic scale, which means there are five notes in a scale. “I’ve turned it into a westernsounding instrument. To do that, I have to change some of the notes. The Chinese pentatonic scale has beautiful and interesting sounds, but we might not attach meaning to it in the same way because we’ve learned to respond to different scale sounds.” She also composes songs on the guzheng in a similar way to composing on guitar and piano, but while also acknowledging the instrument’s capabilities. “I’m still learning the limitations. I need to learn how to set the strings based on the sound I want. Beyond that, it’s about finding a chord structure and a rhythm that works. The pentatonic scale is an open tuning, so there’s basically nothing you can do wrong. cont’d on page 13 ...

Grey Matters with Beverly C.S. Brazier

The simple pleasure of hanging laundry O

f all the things I miss each year as the summer spills over into autumn, the one I hang on to the longest, and feel most wistful letting go, is laundry. More specifically, hanging clothes outside in the sun. The long days, the warm evenings, the flowers and vegetables as the season goes on? All of that is wonderful, but I can’t honestly say that I miss them much as the seasons change. I have always liked the coziness of the darkness, so I celebrate the return of the stars and the night sky. I like the crisp bite of the first frost in the air. But the clothesline? I miss that. I miss that a lot. Recently I’ve been asking myself why. First, I think, it reminds me of my mom. She washed clothes every day that the sun shone, in every season, and hung them on the line in our backyard. In the winter, it was fun for us to bring in the towels, still frozen. When we were little, we’d take grandpa’s long underwear, frozen stiff from the line, and dance with it in the kitchen. Mom did that laundry in an old wringer washer that we were never allowed to use. She was afraid that something horrible would happen; that we’d be careless, or get caught in it somehow. As a result, I didn’t do my own laundry until I moved out to share an apartment at university.

My friend had to show me how to use the washing machine. So the clothesline reminds me of mom, that’s one thing. There’s an even deeper nostal-

For me now, it brings back those memories. But there’s more to it than that. I remember the spring that my husband died. In the weeks that followed, before the visitors went home, I used to do laundry often, taking it out to the line. The ritual and method of it was soothing and healing somehow. It was the one place I could go to think or cry, where people wouldn’t follow me to make sure I was ok. I had the cleanest clothes in town that year! Now, it’s enough for me to simply know that I love doing laundry. The smell of linedried sheets and towels, the feel of them against my skin, is a simple, readily available moment of delight in a world that sometimes offers little enough of those. Somehow, too, it seems a substantial, subversive kind of thing. Tapping into the wisdom of elders and to the Earth. A small act of connection, conservation and respect. It simply makes sense to let the sun and the wind work their gentle magic. It’s an attitude about things; a carefulness; an age-old ritual that orPHOTO: Pixabay ders a crazy world, helps with the electricity bill, connects and have it remain so. Must be 19 years

As it turns out, this was a very good summer for cruise ships to be docked elsewhere, being sanitized for their eventual revival, and for Holland-America to decide not to bring hordes of visitors to the Westmark Hotel in Dawson City.

N

ot that we don’t miss the clusters of tourists tagging along behind Parks Canada interpreters during the mornings and afternoons, or packing into Diamond Tooth Gerties in the evenings. This year’s little groups of no more than six at a time are nothing compared to the customary two dozen of other years. We do hope they will be able to come back next summer and that life will feel just a bit more normal, but the way Fifth Avenue along the entire Westmark block has been in constant turmoil since May, there was no way that the hotel (which

There’s a street in front of the Westmark again but it’s the Aurora Inn’s turn

Navigating Dawson’s streets last summer ... cont’d

The intersection of Third and King looked like this for many weeks

Construction has finally pushed past the intersection of Third and King, but Klondike Kate’s restaurant was blocked all summer

There was no street to be used between the Westmark’s buildings for most of the summer

That has meant that getting around town has been interesting enough for those of us who live here. For visitors, it’s probably been a mite of a mystery. Westmark block was finally finished around the same time Holland-America would have normally been buttoning up its hotel rooms and several staff accommodation buildings for the end of the season. The work at that end of town barricaded two or three major east-west intersections, as well as the north-south route on Fifth, for much of the summer, and is now inching towards isolating the Dawson City Museum. Museum folks knew this was coming and were already closed this summer to allow for a massive internal renovation project. Elsewhere in town, Third Avenue, north of King Street, had several blocks walled off for a couple of months. Locals described it as the project that kept on giving, as the initial installation of the new pipe somehow failed and it all had to be dug up again and reinstalled just after it seemed the task had been completed. The situation wasn’t quite as quixotic as the spring snow removal is around here, but it did mean that every few days you had to make a new travel plan just to get around. For locals it’s the third year of this necessary evil. Parks Canada has contributed to the confusion with work being done to buildings on Third (the Dawson Daily News building) and Second (Ruby’s Place), both of which have involved some blocking of their respective streets. Things should be back to nearly normal by the time we get our first dusting of snow around Thanksgiving. In the meantime, all we have to concern ourselves with is falling leaves. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Oland Keddy

Bucatini with red wine braised squid and pepperoni

B

ucatini is a long pasta, like spaghetti, but there’s a hole through it, kinda like a straw, or a really long KD noodle. They hold sauce like no one’s business and mimic the shape of the braised squid rings. If you’re new to cooking squid, or haven’t had them outside of fried calamari, this is a great way to give them a try. The squid turn out tender and mild, while the sauce takes on most of its flavor from the pepperoni and the red wine. Serves 2

INGREDIENTS

❑ 2 cups chopped pepperoni ❑ 4 garlic cloves, sliced ❑ 1 small onion, chopped ❑ 340 grams sliced squid rings

Squid cooking in wine.

❑ 1 1/2 cups red wine ❑ 7 oz crushed tomatoes

❑ Large pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Frying chopped pepperoni

❑ Salt and pepper to taste ❑ 250 grams bucatini

Cocktails with Latitude with Jennifer Tyldesley

Warm Winter Drinks H

ere we are, with the holiday season fast approaching, and it’s quite likely that you will want to celebrate with a few festive drinks. For me, winter with its cold makes me feel the need for warming ingredients such as ginger, cloves, molasses, and chocolate. The recipes that follow are full of these warm flavours. Have you heard of falernum? It’s a liqueur (or it can be a non-alcoholic syrup) from the Caribbean. It’s made from lime, ginger, almonds, cloves and, sometimes, rum. I love John D. Taylor’s “Velvet Falernum” from Barbados, but it is difficult to find here in the Yukon. The name velvet falernum is used to describe the velvety mouthfeel of this spirit, with its sweet, warm notes. Yukon Cocktail & Bar Supplies in Whitehorse sells a Canadian-made, alcohol-free falernum syrup made by a company called Prosyro. I have used it in the first recipe instead of the liqueur. Dubonnet is available locally, and it is a truly magical cocktail ingredient. A wine-based apératif created in Paris in 1846 with a top-secret recipe, it has a warm spiciness that is fitting for these cold months.

Velvet December

Ingredients • 1 1/2 oz rum (Havana Club 7-year old rum is great here) • 1/2 oz falernum syrup • 2 oz Dubonnet • 2 oz soda water • 1/3 oz lime juice • 8 drops Free Pour Jenny’s Labrador Tea & Lime Bitters

Instructions Add all ingredients except soda water to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until chilled. Strain into a tumbler or large goblet filled with fresh ice, and top with soda water. Stir gently. May be garnished with a thick piece of lime zest or left unadorned.

Lavender Hot Chocolate

Ingredients • Generous dollop of lavender whipped cream ** • 7 oz prepared hot chocolate • 1 oz Cognac • 12 drops Free Pour Jenny’s Limited-Edition Lovely Lavender Bitters • Several dried lavender flowers (food-grade lavender only)

Instructions Pour hot chocolate into a mug and make sure it’s piping hot! Add Cognac and bitters, stirring gently to blend. Top with a dollop of lavender whipped cream and garnish with dried flowers. If flowers are not available, top with freshly shaved chocolate or metallic cake decorating sprinkles.

** Lavender Whipped Cream

Ingredients • 1/2 cup whipping cream • 3/4 tsp Free Pour Jenny’s Limited-Edition Lovely Lavender Bitters

Instructions Add the bitters to the whipping cream in a small bowl. Using a hand blender, whip until peaks form. This will make enough lavender whipped cream for several hot chocolates depending on your taste!

The Archangel

Yukon Holiday Punch

Ingredients • 10 oz Pimms No.1 Cup • 10 oz Tanqueray London Dry Gin • 25 oz sparkling apple juice • 24 oz pomegranate juice • 8 oz ginger simple syrup * • 8 oz orange juice • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 3 oranges, sliced • 2 lemons, sliced • 1 lime, sliced • 1 cup pomegranate seeds • 8 star anise • 1/2 cup cranberries • 4-6 sprigs rosemary • 1 1/2 tsp Free Pour Jenny’s Solstice Bitters • Ice

Instructions Chill all ingredients for at least several hours. In a large punch bowl, combine all liquid ingredients, including bitters. Stir until well blended. Add orange, lemon, and lime slices, pomegranate seeds, cranberries and star anise. Keep punch cold until serving time. Garnish punch bowl with fresh rosemary sprigs prior to serving. You may add ice as needed, but try to avoid adding an excessive amount, or the punch will become watered down. A large piece of ice or a decorative ice block is preferred over small cubes.

Original

Yukon Holiday Punch PHOTO: Deborah Turner-Davis Serve punch with a ladle into punch glasses, vintage teacups, or wine glasses. Anything goes for glassware here! *Note: Recipe yields 15 servings (approximately 6 oz each)

* Ginger Simple Syrup

Ingredients • 1 cup turbinado sugar • 1 cup water • 1/4 cup sliced, washed ginger root (you don’t need to peel it. Just give it a scrub!)

Instructions Place all syrup ingredients in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the mixture comes to

a simmer. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat, and let the syrup cool completely. Strain syrup into a clean jar, label, and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. *A few notes on alcohol consumption. These cocktails are strong, and they should be consumed in moderation. One serving of spirits is 1 ½ oz. A good rule of thumb is to have a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage. Cheers! Jennifer Tyldesley is the cocktail genius behind locally-crafted Free Pour Jenny’s Bitters.

PHOTO: Glenda Koh “One thing different is that there are certain traditional techniques, like a sweep or a bend, that I like to add in, so it’s deciding where those fit. When I’m composing contemporary pieces, I want to have a bit of that to honour the capacity of this traditional instrument.” She demonstrates some of

those techniques. Pitch-bending is one, where the left hand modulates the note. “It’s not unlike something in guitar called a hammer on,” she says. “You play an open string, then you add your finger to change the note. It’s different because you hear all the notes in between.”

Learning this particular instrument does have its challenges. Some flourishes or elements are written into the music through notations in Chinese characters. Although she doesn’t know the words, or how to pronounce them, Mah can recognize the characters and their meanings within the music. The guzheng can also tax the body. “The guzheng is a physically demanding instrument because of the finger dexterity—it’s a lot like a harp. There’s a lot of different ways to play and some are really fast. I have very hard callouses.” As many have observed during the pandemic, learning remotely can be vexing. Mah uses a combination of videos and FaceTime lessons with her teacher. “Because of the lag, we can’t play together. The urge to match and play together is so strong, but you know it’s going to sound like garbage. It’s tricky to take turns.” Glenda Koh wants to hear about your peculiar pastimes and eclectic amusements. Contact her with your ideas at editor@whatsupyukon.com.

From the vaults After 17 years, late Yukon musician Aylie Sparkes’ album has finally gotten a digital release by Manus Hopkins

A

ylie Sparkes was the first real musician who ever played with Gordie Ten-

trees. They played at Steve’s Music on Main Street (remember that place?) and charged a $2 cover. These were humble beginnings for Tentrees, who has gone on to become one of the Yukon’s bestknown musicians, but his story would have been very different without the man who gave him his first break. Sparkes only lived in the Yukon for four years. He moved to the territory from Manitoba in 2001 and passed away from cancer in 2005, but in that short period of time, he managed to make an impact on the local music scene that still lasts today. Ask any Whitehorse musician who was around back then—Aylie Sparkes was everywhere and everyone knew him. “It was amazing to be his friend and amazing to play music with him and learn from him,” said Tentrees. In 2003, Aylie Sparkes recorded his only album, Beautiful & Deranged. He shared production duties with Bob Hamilton and was joined by Paul Stephens on bass and backup vocals, and Marc Paradis on drums and percussion. Sparkes himself handled lead vocals, as well as several different

The late Aylie Sparkes

PHOTOS: courtesy of Gordie Tentrees types of guitar and banjo. Due to his health, he wasn’t able to tour in support of it, or promote it like he wanted to. This was long before the advent of digital releases. Eventually, the copies were all sold and the album was buried, until earlier this year when Tentrees came across a box of 50 unsold CD copies. He decided to release the album on Bandcamp, simply because he felt it was a record people needed to hear, or hear again. Luckily, releasing an album independently is far easier now than it was when Sparkes was alive, but Tentrees still took some extra promotional steps, like using a publicist to get the word out. Sparkes’ music career was close to taking off when he passed away. Beautiful & Deranged had been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for “Blues Album of the Year” in 2004, and word of Sparkes was starting to reach outside of the Yukon and into other parts of the country. “He was on the verge of realizing his dreams,” said Tentrees. One of the many things for

which Yukoners remember Sparkes is the fact that he never stopped playing guitar. Tentrees said some nights, Sparkes would knock on his door at midnight after being out gigging all night, guitar in hand, asking if Tentrees wanted to have an impromptu jam session. These jam sessions would often extend into the morning hours. When he wasn’t playing a show, which wasn’t often, Sparkes could be seen sitting on his porch, playing guitar. Something else that made Sparkes popular within the Yukon’s music community was his willingness to play with anyone, and the fact that he could play any style of music. While he was a talented songwriter, it was playing that was Sparkes’ main passion. To Tentrees, he was a musician who led by example, because of his intense practice regimen and lack of ego. “A lot of people spend a lot of time taking selfies with their guitars,” said Tentrees. “But that was nowhere in Aylie’s game. He was just in love with playing music.” Revisiting Sparke’s album after

all these years has stirred up lots of cherished memories for Tentrees. He said he’s probably one of the only people who knows the stories behind every song on the record, and hearing them now takes him back to nearly 20 years ago when all the songs were coming together. Sparkes is still a huge musical inspiration for Tentrees, and one of the reasons he pushes himself to play music every single day. Beautiful & Deranged can be purchased digitally on Sparke’s Bandcamp page, www.ayliesparkes.bandcamp.com, for $20. All proceeds go to Sparke’s children. “I play the record and everyone falls in love with it,” said Tentrees. “It’s an example of what you should be shooting for if you really get into your art.”

didn’t have these guys, honestly,” says Roush, who isn’t interested in baking. But she has another motivation. “It allows me to support our community,” she says. This ethos is something Roush shares with Gamberg; their core philosophy is “locals supporting local.” In the past, they’ve provided space for local pop-ups, such as Tacky Town thrift store. Now, they’re doing something bigger. This winter, when local gift-buying options are limited, Gamberg and Roush are taking the Christmas craft fairs online. It’s their response to COVID, and to the impact of cancelled craft sales on artists. Gamberg and Roush also want to provide Yukoners with a local alternative to online behemoths like Amazon. “It really sucks for the artisans who aren’t going to have that revenue,” says Gamberg, who has been a craft fair vendor in the past. “Especially with COVID, I’m worried that people are going to do all their shopping on Amazon.” Gamberg and Roush are expanding on a platform they’ve already built to offer a full, multivendor market, a “one-stop shop for Yukon-made goods and services.” The back of the shop will become the fulfillment centre where goods will be stored and where

Heated suites, large fenced-in exercise areas, interactive play-time with other dogs, walks on/off leash, ATV/Snowmachine runs, daily swimming in the lake and lots and tons of cuddling.

The name “Road Dogs” comes from the year Gamberg spent touring with a band. She says it’s “kind of a classic name for a roadie.” Meanwhile, Roush began with a mobile venture, The Coffee Bar, vending from a trailer. She moved on to more stable digs at the former Qualita’s Cleaners, a stone’s throw from the music shop. “I started with [the name] The Coffee Bar as a throw to the Italian coffee bars,” Roush says, though she confesses she’s never been to Italy. “I drew a lot of inspiration from that. Then I went from vending to indoors and I was like, ‘how do I bridge this now?’ So I just changed the name to The Coffee Shop.” However, the drycleaner’s space was for sale and she’d eventually have to relocate. Coincidentally, Road Dogs Music had a small coffee bar left over from Hamilton’s days. After hearing about Roush’s predicament, Gamberg agreed to share her space. Roush makes espresso coffee drinks and offers pastries from the Swiss Bakery, as well as sandwiches from Alligator Grilled Cheese. Mondays feature Sourdoughnuts pop-ups. “I don’t know where I’d go if I

illow Gamberg and Jasmine Roush are makers of amazing spaces. The proprietors of Road Dogs Music Supply and The Coffee Shop respectively, their businesses are located in Hamilton and Son Guitar Works on Third Avenue in Whitehorse. It’s a place to buy a guitar, or peruse vinyl while you enjoy a great cappuccino. It’s also where the idea for an online marketplace for Yukon products was born. Gamberg and Roush are likeminded entrepreneurs whose parallel journeys to Guitar Works were brought about seemingly by fate. Gamberg began in the music supply business working at Dean’s Strings; owner Dean Tower hired her when she was 16. She wasn’t in the position to buy the business from him when it was for sale in 2018. However, a year later, when Bob Hamilton was closing the Guitar Works storefront, Gamberg was ready to take it on. Now she sells new and used instruments, music supplies and vinyl. “That’s been my new obsession, it’s been super fun,” she says of the record section. “This town loves vinyl.”

Going to the dogs! ... cont’d folks can pick up their purchases. Gamberg and Roush will do most of the work themselves. They see a number of advantages to the shopping model. People can pick up items whenever the shop is open, there are no long line-ups, and vendors don’t have to spend long days at craft market tables. It can also provide access to goods from all over the Yukon. Folks looking for the fulfillment centre won’t have a hard time finding it. Roush and Gamberg recently acquired a new sign from their neighbour, Green Screen Printing. It features the Road Dogs dog-skull-and-drumstick-crossbones logo on one half, and The Coffee Shop’s 1970s balloon lettering on the other. Once shoppers have had a coffee, found their favourite vinyl, and picked up their local products, they might want to explore Third Avenue further. “This block is just awesome,” says Gamberg. “There’s us and Green Screen and Tara [Kolla] at the Wish Factory. We’re having a lot of fun on this block.” Road Dogs Music and The Coffee

Shining Lights Shine Your Light is a weekly radio show featuring live music, poetry, comedy and conversation, spearheaded by Matthew “Toots” Toothill

ou’d be forgiven for not having heard of Toots just yet. He’s a relatively new name on Whitehorse’s local music

PHOTO: Submitted by Matthew Toothill scene, but despite the lack of live music opportunities these past several months, he’s been able to get his name out there a lot more

November 25, 2020 than one might expect. Toots is 32-year-old Matthew Toothill, a singer-songwriter originally from England, who ended up in the Yukon because of what he calls “a weird mixture of love and work.” “What keeps me here is the desire to experience community and connection,” he said. “And to see what I can provide in these areas and to learn and grow from a life lived in one place.” To Toothill, music is a form of self-expression, in which he can convey emotions and messages he wouldn’t be able to get across in normal conversation. He was always into punk music with meaning. He wants people to both enjoy his music and dance to it, and also come away from it with things to think about. “There is so much insincerity around us,” he said. “It’s used to sell products, convince us of political agendas and bend the truth. I just want the message of my music to be one of sincerity.” This summer, Toothill’s name started popping up around Whitehorse, notably with a performance as part of Arts in the Park’s re-imagined radio show. After performing live on CJUC 92.5 FM as part of the series, and with real live performances being so sparse these days, he felt inspired to start his own radio show. Toothill is now presenting Shine Your Light, a weekly radio show on CJUC. Every Sunday at 7 p.m., Shine Your Light features different artists performing music, poetry and telling stories. Wanting to pick up where Arts in the Park left off, but also expand beyond just a music show, Toothill was easily able to join forces with CJUC’s Bill Polonsky and start his show promptly, with the first performance taking place on Sept. 13. Shine Your Light has already showcased performances by Caroline Allat, Emilie LeFrancois, Elise Brown-Dussault and a new local act, Denim.

“I wanted to keep live music in people’s lives and give all levels of audible art a platform,” said Toothill. One passion of Toothill’s is increasing and fostering dialogue surrounding mental health. In a time where this is very much needed, Toothill is taking some innovative approaches to de-stigmatizing mental health struggles and bringing attention to organizations with his shared vision. Unfortunately, in an age of social distancing and fear towards one another, the community’s collective mental health is not at its best, according to Toothill. This summer, Toothill teamed up with a host of musicians including Selina Heyligers-Hare and Calla Kinglit to put together a compilation album, for which six artists each submitted a song. The album, titled We See You, can be purchased on Bandcamp. All the proceeds are going to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Right now, it’s a more important time than ever to keep bringing music to people, to keep shining a light on mental health and to send out a message of hope. “Music is humanity’s greatest achievement, but it’s so often taken for granted and overlooked,” said Toothill. “It is so important that we support all artists during times like these, because it’s during times like these that art supports us.” Listen to Shine Your Light on CJUC Community Radio at 92.5 FM every Sunday at 7 p.m. Head over to the series’ Instagram account, @shineyourlight.cjuc to see who’s up next.

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse andToronto-based journalism student, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5
