he Chu Niikwän Artist Residency is a partnership between the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC), the Yukon Arts Centre and the Yukon Art Society. Now in its third year, the residency provides three visual artists with studio spaces in Whitehorse for three weeks. The residency culminates in an exhibit, Meeting by the currents, which finished showing at the KDCC on Dec. 2. Robyn McLeod’s dresses from her fashion collection, Dene Futurisms, are featured in this story, which is part of a series about the three Chu Niikwän residency artists and their work. McLeod is originally from Yellowknife. She is of Dene and Scottish descent and is a member of the Deh Gáh Got’įę First Nation in the Deh Cho Region. She represents the KDCC in the residency, but for COVID-related rea-

enjoyed showing her work, and wanted to do more of it. “Once I heard about the residency–because I knew some people who had gone through it–I decided to apply on a whim, not thinking I would get accepted because there are so many amazing artists in the Yukon. I wanted to do some more exhibition work and showcase the collection I’ve been working on.” McLeod was in the process of creating Dene Futurisms, which was funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and Yukon Culture Quest. The collection was originally meant to be featured at the Adäka Cultural Festival last summer, but the event was cancelled. The residency provided her with another opportunity to complete the collection and showcase her work. McLeod had originally planned a project related to water systems in the Yukon for the residency. That idea didn’t pan out. Instead, McLeod’s attention returned to her collection. When a family member was ill, she started making a dress as part of her grieving process. “[It was] just me in a grieving mode, because she was really sick at the time and when I had finished the dress, she had passed away that day. So I called it the Auntie Dress after her, in remembrance of her, because she was my Auntie.” McLeod says that making the dress turned her grief into something beautiful and meaningful. The Auntie dress was featured at the Wondercrawl event, which took place along the Whitehorse waterfront in September. “I got it sent up by a plane

hundreds of people.” McLeod’s stunning work can now be seen at the Chu Niikwän residency exhibit, Meeting by the Currents. She describes the pieces in her collection as “contemporary with a traditional twist.” They include The Auntie Dress, which is accessorized with a beaded headband. The dress is made from bold black-and-white striped upholstery fabric and incorporates bands of colourful ribbon and wolverine fur harvested in Fort McPherson. A hanky dress entitled Etsu is accompanied by a moose hide mask with tufted moose-hair flowers. For the floral design, McLeod used drawings by her paternal grandmother, Florestine McLeod. Tufting, she explains, is a family tradition. “This type of sewing originated when her [Florestine’s] grandmother watched a nun make a flower out of yarn and she then went home to use moose hair to make flowers,” McLeod says in her artist statement. McLeod’s beautiful pieces feature strong contemporary influences and would look at home on a couture fashion runway. But ultimately, she says, “It always comes back to family.” “[It] makes me extremely proud to have a long line of strong, creative matriarchs in the family.”

from Ross River that day. By the time I got it into the garment bag I was shaking from so much adrenaline, trying to get it on time on the plane to Whitehorse.”

McLeod wasn’t able to attend Wondercrawl, but it meant a lot to her that her dress was there. “It was a pivotal moment for me because it was showcased to

Early geological mapping Planes, trains and packhorses

PHOTO: Hugh Copland

by Hugh Copland

Part Two The Klondike gold rush brought the GSC back to the Yukon on a number of projects. There was now a railway from the coast to Whitehorse and scheduled boat service on the Yukon River system, making travel easier.

O

ne project was to traverse and map the Mackenzie Mountains near the YukonNWT border. Joseph Keele spent an entire year in 1907-08 travelling from Ross River to the Mackenzie River. They took a steamer up to Ross River but beyond that they built small boats and had three pack dogs. The land was not suitable for horse travel due to the lack of feed. Dogs could pack 20 kilograms and could be transported by boat. During the winter months they built sleds for the dogs to pull supplies on a hundred kilometre hike over the continental divide to the headwaters of the Twitya River. Pack horses were the favoured means of transportation where the terrain was favourable and there was ample natural feed for the horses. The most renowned of the GSC geologists to use horses was Hugh S. Bostock. He

first joined the GSC in 1924 and was appointed chief geologist for the Yukon in 1931. Within two months of taking the position, Bostock was on the steamer Princess Louise to Skagway. He arrived in Whitehorse by the WPYR railway on June 21, and three days later he was on the paddle wheeler Casca to the north end of Lake Laberge. Here he joined a topographic survey party who were already in the area. Their base camp had 14 horses belonging to an Indigenous guide and his helper. They also used flat bottom, square stern wooden row boats. Known as Whitehorse boats, they were equipped with a six horsepower outboard motor. When they moved camp up the Teslin River they found that lightly loaded boats could travel about the same speed as the packhorses travelling along the riverbank carrying the bulk of the supplies.

Bostock spent the next twenty years traversing through the Yukon with packhorses. Upon his retirement from the GSC in 1966 he was convinced to write his personal memoirs. In 1979, “Pack Horse Tracks – recollections of a geologist’s life in British Columbia and the Yukon 1924-1954” was published. The book is full of fascinating stories about his many Yukon adventures and the locals he met. Bostock painted and wrote poetry as well; the Yukon Geological Survey’s core library on the Alaska Highway is named after him. He tells a great story of having lunch with Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1954. They were in a suite in the back of a Royal Air Force plane on the way to Whitehorse from Vancouver. Aviation came to the Yukon in 1920 and the first commercial

A Pilatus Porter on floats, Yukon 1980 air company was formed in 1927. Yukon Airways and Exploration Company, was based in Mayo. Other companies soon followed. During the 1930’s planes on floats and skis, were used extensively on Yukon lakes and rivers, as they are today. Packhorses continued to be used by prospectors and geologists through the 1950s and 1960s. J.E. Muller of the GSC spent several years in the 1950s mapping the entire Kluane Lake area using horses and boats. The arrival of the first helicopters revolutionized travel. In the early 1950’s Hiller 360s and Bell 47s, (the ones you see on M*A*S*H) started doing survey work. In 1952 a Hiller 360 crashed south of Old Crow and in 2014 local aircraft historian Bob Cameron arranged for it to be moved from the crash site to Whitehorse. Bob spent hundreds of hours restoring the helicopter.

One of the very first helicopters in the territory, it can now be seen at the Yukon Transportation Museum. Today helicopters remain the preferred means of fast, low impact, transportation in the mountains. Drones are quickly becoming the latest game changer for mapping. That annoying buzz over George Dawson’s head in 1887 came from mosquitoes. For today’s geologist, it is more likely the hum of a drone.

Hugh Copland is a geological engineer living on the South Klondike Highway. He has been collecting rocks in the Yukon for the past 38 years.

DiNo-riffic! Bringing joy to a cold, dark month with new traditions

by Amber Church

N

ovember is traditionally a cold, dark and relatively quiet month. It’s the deep breath between Halloween and the mass of celebrations, such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Longest Night and New Year’s Eve, that make December such a beautiful time of the year. But the month is not quiet for everyone; in our house Nov. 1 heralds the start of a month-long celebration: DiNovember. DiNovember sees my daughter’s pet dinosaurs, full of mischief and hijinks, take over the house for a month. Each morning of November, the household wakes to a new scene of chaos from the dinosaurs. They’ve built ziplines and hot air balloons; they’ve stolen cookies and tried

One morning the dinosaurs were caught in the act of stealing cookies from the cookie jar to make up for the trespass by trying to bake new ones; they’ve created art and taken time to honour the fallen on Remembrance Day; they’ve built movie theatres to watch Jurassic Park (and covered every surface in popcorn in the process); on one

very memorable morning they tried to trap my daughter’s toy dog and received an intense scolding delivered with the wrath that only an irate two-year can produce. They always start their monthlong escapades by attacking the

carved pumpkins as a way of announcing that Halloween is over and that DiNovember has arrived. On Nov. 30, they always strive to make amends for the month of havoc they have wrought by decorating the house for Christmas, procuring my daughter’s ad-

In doing so we’ve found that the dinosaurs are bringing joy to many others besides ourselves. I don’t think I get stopped in the street more at any point of the year than in November, when I find myself stopped every few steps to discuss whatever the dinosaurs got up to that day. The most important lesson I’ve been able to take away from allowing a set of prehistoric reptiles to roam my house for the month is the joy of creating and honouring our own traditions and celebrations. Cocktails with Latitude with Jennifer Tyldesley

Cheers to a new year Penicillin I really wanted to incorporate a Scotch cocktail into the mix for this column, in keeping with the “Auld Lang Syne” theme. This libation was created in 2005 by Sam Ross of Milk & Honey in Manhat-

T

his month’s cocktails are an eclectic bunch, but they’re all aimed at celebrating the season, in particular, the impending completion of 2020. Robbie Burns’ “Auld Lang Syne” has come to mind a lot lately for me, with its theme of days gone by and doing things for the sake of old times. This verse seems quite fitting for this late December, doesn’t it? So, raise your glasses, in your living rooms, toast one another, and remember that we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet…

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup! and surely I’ll buy mine!

tan. The name implies a “cureall,” which again seems fitting during a pandemic, even if there is simply a placebo effect. Some recipes call for honey-ginger syrup, but I prefer to make a honey syrup which is also a versatile ingredient for other cocktails, most

notably, the Prohibition-era Bee’s Knees. Ingredients • 2 oz single-malt or blended Scotch whisky (lightly peated is best) • 1/3 oz heavily peated Scotch whisky (Ardbeg 10-year is great here) • 1 oz lemon juice • 1 oz honey syrup * • 1 tsp sliced fresh ginger Instructions Place the ginger in a cocktail shaker. Using a muddler, bruise the ginger to release the flavours. Add the liquid ingredients, add ice, and shake hard until wellchilled. Double strain into a rocks glass with one large ice cube (or filled with cubed ice). Now take your medicine, like a good kid.

*Honey Syrup Ingredients • 1/2 cup local honey (I like Yukon Raw Honey) • 1/2 cup water

Penicillin

Instructions Combine honey and water in a small saucepan and place over medium heat.

And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

Stir until blended. Pour into a clean jar, let cool, and label before storing in fridge. Syrup will keep for up to 2 weeks. You can also use this syrup to make a classic cocktail, the Bee’s Knees!

Santa’s Little Helper Cue the Rolling Stones and let’s get ready for the holidays! But really, this might just be the perfect beverage to Santa’s Little Helper leave out for Santa on Christmas Eve. what you’re looking for when it comes to dinner. Here’s a recipe for a whole duck cooked in a slow cooker. For the next few weeks, there will be a new recipe

shredded duck.

1

Makes between 4-5 cups shredded duck meat

Liberally salt the duck, inside and out. Place duck in a slow cooker along with garlic, black peppercorns, bay leaves, and beer.

2

Cover, and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours, depending on the size of the duck. When it’s done the duck should pull away from the bones with a fork.

INGREDIENTS ❑ 1 duck, thawed if frozen

❑ 1 tbsp black peppercorns

❑ Salt, to taste

❑ 6 bay leaves

❑ 6 garlic cloves

❑ 1 can of beer

3

Remove from the slow cooker, reserve the cooking liquid for later use. Both the duck fat and the cooking liquid can be easily incorporated into recipes using this duck. Shred the duck and skin, removing all bones. At this point you can use the shredded duck for a variety of recipes, including a simple duck, Boursin, and arugula sandwich. cont’d on page 13 ...

This festive Haitian recipe is best shared with family and friends. Although this year you might not be gathering the way you’re used to, it can be gifted in little mason jars. Ingredients • 177 ml evaporated milk (half of can) – can use partly skimmed variety for lighter version • 300 ml can sweetened condensed milk • 200 ml coconut milk (half of can) – shake can well prior to opening • 1/2 tsp finely grated (or ground) nutmeg • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp Free Pour Jenny’s Solstice Bitters • 1/2 tsp almond extract • 1/2 tsp lime juice • 1/2 cup rum (try Bacardi 8 or Flor de Cana 7) • Thick piece of lime zest or nutmeg for garnishing Instructions In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together evaporated milk, condensed milk and coconut milk until well blended. Add nutmeg, cinnamon, bitters, and almond extract; whisk again until frothy. Add lime juice, whisking lightly to thicken the mixture slightly. Finally, whisk in the rum. Using a funnel and a fine mesh strainer, pour the cocktail into a clean 750 ml bottle (or several mason jars) and then label. This cocktail will be better the next day! It will keep for up to 2

months in the refrigerator. Shake well before using. If you like, you can add a little splash of rum to each serving for a little more of that flavour; stir after adding the rum. Garnish with lime zest or a little freshly grated nutmeg. Recipe yields 4 servings, and may be easily doubled.

Scorpion This tiki cocktail is a circa-1946 Trader Vic recipe. There are a multitude of variations if you look around. It is well-known for being served in a large, volcanostyled bowl, with a bunch of straws, but this version makes one serving and is thus more pandemic-friendly. Even better, you can splash a little overproof rum onto the drink and light it on fire before serving it! I have played with the ratios a tiny bit. I’ve also added Solstice Bitters to balance some of the sweetness from the OJ and orgeat. It is pictured here in a tiki cup that embodies my feelings toward 2020, and with this, I bid this year farewell!

We are trying to reduce the future over’PUP’ulation in the North, by adopting to family’s that will spay & neuter. Each female dog that is not spayed could produce up to 67,000 descendants in her lifetime. Unwanted dogs - suffer. For more information or to send us a message visit our

The appeal of terrible Christmas movies movies

Take comfort in the classics this year

 Therapeutic Massage

by Tess Casher

D

ecember brings three things; colder weather, drier skin and the inevitable onslaught of terrible Christmas movies. It’s my hypothesis that, after a certain point in November, the collective standard in cinema begins to drop. Suddenly, somewhere during the evening of Dec. 14, it seems appropriate to spend two-and-a-half hours watching a New York executive travel to her hometown for the holidays and accidentally spill a cup of hot chocolate on the high school boyfriend who ends up showing her the true meaning of Christmas. Some movies seem to be the result of an executive marketing team sitting down, coming up with a mediocre pun and deciding to write a fulllength feature film to go with it (I’m looking at you The Knight Before Christmas, where Vanessa Hudgens plays the romantic interest of a time-travelling knight named Sir Cole). Between the cringe-worthy dialogue and a race to squash as many ice skating, cookie-baking, snow-angelmaking stereotypical winter activities as possible into 120 minutes, there seems to be a firm collective opinion that these movies are cheesy. Yet, every year, without fail, Hallmark wraps the classic tropes of meet-cute rom-coms, tales of self-discovery and coming of age narratives in Christmas paper. Companies do not exist to create Christmas magic; they work to make a profit. If they are continuing to produce these movies, it means that there are enough people watching them to justify the cheesy Christmas movie market. My question is, why?

sion. I would argue the predictability of the plot, the very thing that makes it a boring movie, is what draws the audience in. Life is messy, chaotic and unpredictable. Winter brings traditions as a source of comfort in the cold, dark months. Be it annual religious celebrations, listening to holiday tunes on the radio, or walking through Shipyards Park to take in the coloured lights, there is comfort in repetition. And sitting down to watch a terrible Christmas movie, we know exactly what we’re going to get. Somehow Hallmark has placed its films as part of the comfort of winter traditions. Do the movies create unrealistic expectations of what a decorated house should look like? Completely. Is it part of the blatant and invasive commercialization of the holidays? Absolutely. Does it still bring me joy? Yes. And I would PHOTO: Tess Casher argue that in the hardship, turmoil and unpredictability of this year in particular, every bit of comfort is a good thing. So, if it suits your fancy, let’s dust off the Michael Bublé CD, grab fuzzy socks, pop far too much popcorn and plop down on the couch to laugh at the writing, poke fun at the plot and utterly enjoy this year’s selection of terrible Christmas movies.

Why are objectively terrible movies so popular? We already know the songs, character archetypes and 30 seconds into the trailers, we can guess with 90 per cent accuracy the conclu-

Connecting this holiday season

T

his holiday season will look a lot different for many Yukoners, myself included. Usually at this time of year I travel to Ontario to visit family and friends, but the COVID-19 pandemic means I’ll have to make a few changes to my annual tradition. Chances are that I’ll stay local this year. While I’ll get some reprieve from slush, noise and the inevitable pileup along the 401, I will also miss many of the positives of going back. Seeing loved ones is always top of the priority list, but getting some end-ofyear shopping done and feasting on different cuisines also plays a large part in my holiday plans. This past year has definitely put an emphasis on the whole idea of “isolation.” From closing the borders for travelers into the territory, to needing to self-isolate if you return to the territory, to being unable to fly as airlines shut down flights. We had a small glimpse of what life looks like with limited connectivity. Like our need for connectivity, much of the Yukon’s wildlife also needs to be able to travel from one place to another. When wildlife populations become isolated, it

makes it much more difficult for them to thrive. But we often impose our ability to adapt onto other species. We have systems in place that are helpful for us, but we don’t often consider how those systems impact other populations. Roads, for example, increase our access into certain areas. Being able to drive up to a trailhead to get to some of the Yukon’s great views is something we have all benefited from. But that road may cut through habitat for many iconic species, and even some of those that fly under the radar. If not properly planned, roads could cut through migration routes too, limiting those species from staying connected. Habitat connectivity is an important concept in the world of conservation. The ability for caribou, bears and wolverines to travel from one place to another is crucial. This is because they need to access different food sources, find safety from predators, or find a mate that’s from a different population. Keeping these areas safe is incredibly important for protecting the wildlife that use them. In addition to these areas,

wildlife need safe ways to travel back and forth. These are called wildlife corridors. Humans also have corridors that we use to travel from place to place. But we don’t have to worry about fast vehicles potentially cutting us off with barely any warning. Imagine you are driving up the Klondike Highway towards Dawson City from Whitehorse. And imagine there’s a 20 kilometre stretch where a train crosses the highway. The train has no set schedule, so you don’t know when it’s coming. Unless you’re lucky enough to time it right, you might get t-boned by a train travelling at a high rate of speed. Seems a little farfetched, since train tracks have railway crossing signs with flashing lights. But wildlife don’t get the same warning when cars roll by, and predators usually don’t honk their horns to let the other animals know they’re coming. For us, roads and highways create a relatively safe corridor for us to travel through. So how do animals deal with roads or trails? Many have been showing signs of behavioural changes due to roads and to human presence as a whole. Bears, for example, have begun foraging during times that people aren’t out and about. We also see animals just avoiding roads altogether. This becomes a larger issue as the density of roads and other human activities increase in particular areas. If a road or trail cuts through the middle of an animal’s habitat, those animals could begin avoiding that area, and it would effectively cut down how far the animals travel. But the Yukon is so big! There’s tons of space for animals to roam around without human disturbance, right? Yes! We’re extremely lucky to have so much space where animals can move around easily! Very few places in Canada can say that and it’s something that

we should be very happy about. To keep it that way though, we’ll need to be aware of our impact on the environment around us. So how can you help the Yukon’s wild spaces stay connected? It’s quite simple really. The next time you’re out on a hike, or take your sled, or ATV, for a joyride, stick to the trails and roads. Veering off and plowing your own

trail further breaks apart intact areas. It may not seem like much, but every little bit helps! We’re lucky to have intact habitats here in the Yukon. If we’re smart about where we build and where we play, it can hopefully stay that way. Adil Darvesh is the communications coordinator for CPAWS.

Santa making his rounds

December 16, 2020

Zoom, Santa, Zoom tume; how mukluks replaced the black boots I wore when visiting a large city, or the black belt and big brass buckle were traded for a ceinture fléchée, the colourful sash of French-Canadiens and the Métis. Wolf mitts, of course, are necessary to keep my hands warm while holding the reins of the sleigh. Then, offhandedly, I mentioned that Mrs. Claus thought that I needed a new suit. This prompted me to ask the assembled kids if they thought I needed a new red outfit. All immediately shouted out “No!” A hand shot up as a little fellow, wise well beyond his years, had another thought. He chimed in, “Santa, I think Mrs. Claus was telling you something else. What Mrs. Claus was really saying was that she needed a new dress!” Children have different needs as they develop. Infants just need a cuddle and a few soothing words. Pointing out the sights, sounds and smells of the season highlights the wonder of Christmas for toddlers. By three years of age, they are opening up to the magic of Yuletide. Flying reindeer and a jolly red-suited fellow giving toys to all good boys and girls around the world (we know that they are all good!) is completely believable. It is easy to talk to these children and tap into their fascination and openness to surprises abounding around them. Around the age of eight, the wonder yields to questions. How

t’s tough to sit on Santa’s knee from a distance of two metres, but many of our seasonal traditions have required a pandemicappropriate makeover this year. Santa won’t be holding any stocking-swaddled newborns for baby’s first Christmas portrait, or cajoling shy children to come a little closer to share a Christmas wish. This year, Santa is Zooming. A real northern Santa has serious cachet in southern climes. Since geography is no longer a barrier for a shared holiday greeting, or a wish for joy and peace to fill our lives, Santa can come into your home. Already without much ado, families from Ottawa to Nanaimo and Vancouver to Kansas City have requested Zoom visits from a Yukon Santa. Sadly, more intimate interactions, including a twirl around the dance floor at the Elk’s Hall Christmas Senior’s Supper, or meeting families on Main Street during the Santa Parade will be missing. Will I miss out this year on finding at least one story to add to my personal collection of encounters with kids? Two years ago, at the Air North family celebration at the Canada Games Centre, children gathered around a tree for a story and a few minutes of conversation. I stood up, as I often did, and described my northern cos-

If you can’t be in the same room, Zoom is anything in the stories about Santa really possible? Natural skepticism surfaces. Still, some hold on desperately to their fondest Christmas dreams. My task is to ease their transition from the magic of Santa to the science of Santa. Small challenges help this. One question I pose is “How long would it take for Santa to visit all 10,000 homes in the Yukon if each visit took just one minute?” I help with the math. Can he possibly do that, even given our long northern night? It doesn’t take long for a fifth-grader to come up with some interesting solutions. Teenagers only visit Santa in groups, or on a dare. Most are starting to make the transition to the next stage, discovering the real meaning of Christmas. Caring, sharing, hopes and dreams of a better, more peace-filled world take form in them. Young parents are brimming with these feelings when they hand a small baby over to Santa for a first photo. As we grow older the magic eventually returns. Then, as the years go on, we simply come to cherish the wonder of Christmas again. Zooming can’t replace Santa actually holding an infant, but maybe he can help keep the wonder and magic of this season alive for our children in these COVID days, and for us too.
