F

or a lot of people, dancing and drinking go hand in hand. With a buzz, you can actually dance without worrying about what other people think. If you do something foolish you can always blame it on the booze, right? But when was the last time you thought about having all that same fun but with a twist: skip the hangover, save the money and be kind to your brain? Well, in case you want to give it a try this winter, there are two different no booze dance nights here in Whitehorse for you to choose from:

Operating since 1988

Whitehorse Dance Gathering Whitehorse Dance Gathering, aka “the DG,” was started in 2009 by former Yukon dance instructor Jessica Hickman. Over the years, it switched hands and now I am currently organizing the monthly dances. They are let-loose-shakestretch-sweat-swing events with an hour-and-a-half mixed play-

list that includes world music, electronic, blues, funk, pop, psytrance, hip hop, oldies, classical, reggae, rock and roll, and more. The music starts and ends slow, but picks up in the middle so that you can let out your inner dance animal. The next dance is on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:45 p.m. and lock for entry at 8:15 p.m.) The location is the Association Franco-Yukonnaise, which is at 302 Strickland St. The entrance fee is by donation. For more information please contact WhitehorseDanceGathering@ gmail.com to be added to the email list, or go to the Yukon Dance Gathering page on Facebook. Whitehorse - Just Dance The Whitehorse - Just Dance monthly events are put on by Steve Potter as an outlet for his joint passions of dancing, DJaying and community. Hailing from the United Kingdom, he spent most

of the ’90s running record labels, promoting events and producing music in Birmingham, England. Now a family man, he doesn’t have the time to go out all night – but isn’t ready to hang up his dancing shoes just yet. He brings this deep love and knowledge of all kinds of music (house/reggae/’80s/disco/ hip-hop) to Just Dance. An acupuncturist by day, he also aims to combine the dance night with his interest in meditation and bodywork to create an event that is fun, meditative and healing. The next dance is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. These also take place at the Association Franco-Yukonnaise at 302 Strickland St. The entrance fee is $10. For more information go to the Whitehorse – Just Dance Facebook page. See you on the dance floor! Erin Evangeline Brost facilitates monthly Whitehorse dance gatherings.

Haines Junction resident challenges all Yukoners to lead the way in reconciliation

T

he Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action task all sectors of Canadian society to make changes that will affect “the way things are done” between First Nations people and non-First Nation Canadians. The TRC came about as a way to address the legacy of residential schools, and to help to reconcile relations between non-First Nation Canadians and First Nations people. The TRC recommended 94 calls to action. Kari Johnston, a Haines Junction resident, is aware of the TRC, and she acted on some of the recommendations. Johnston challenged the local mayor and other members of council. Specifically, Johnston identified Article 57, that calls upon all levels of government to, “provide education to public servants on the history of aboriginal peoples.” In response, mayor Michael Riseborough and the four council members completed the Yukon First Nations 101 online course offered by Yukon College. It is the first municipal government in the Yukon to do so. And they completed the course by September 30, Orange Shirt Day, a day to remember children who went to residential school. Mayor Riseborough and the councilors intend for all of the village’s administrative staff to take the course, which takes six hours to complete. Effectively, this will mean that the Village of Haines Junction will have begun to address Article 57 in a timely manner. In December 2015 the TRC office closed. Responsibilities were

The mayor and council of Haines Junction, pictured here with Kari Johnston, completed the FN101 course offered by Yukon College. Thus, they are the first municipality in the Yukon to meet one of the TRC’s Calls to Action transferred to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at the University of Manitoba. It was there that the Commission formulated the 94 items in the Call to Action document which tasked Canadians to make apologies, educate, make changes and repair the damage to the First Nations. The damages were sustained from the

impact of residential schools over the last few hundred years. “I want the Yukon to take a national lead in TRC implementation,” said Kari Johnston, when she was asked where she would like things to go from here. “I think First Nation initiatives being made at Yukon College are already leading the way with the programming that they have developed. And now it is our turn, as members of a civil society, to take up our responsibility to Truth and Reconciliation. The TRC is one of our most important plans since confederation and it clearly charts a pathway forward for us as a nation. Implementation won’t happen if we wait for government to do it for us. It is our shared responsibility. “I think every single Yukoner

should take FN101. And the good news is that we all can because it is easy to register and you can do the course online. Or you can contact the FNI department and learn more about all of the amazing training opportunities that they have available.” Acknowledging that the Yukon government, and particularly the Department of Education, has taken steps to educate about the impact of residential schools, there is still room for action. The challenge has been made to Yukoners, private and public sector employers and the general public. The TRC Calls to Action is available as a PDF online. Go to www. trc.ca to find it. extracted a small tub of raspberries from the freezer yesterday, comforted to see it near overflowing with the season’s harvest. Though saskatoons and blueberries came in in droves this year, the raspberries that made it to the freezer were few and far between – their perishability and spotty cropping this summer made them all too easy to enjoy as soon as they were picked. With this in mind, I wanted to make something special to highlight them. So began a trip down memory lane. The image of a tart, likely from a patisserie in Paris, formed in my mind. The sort where halfsubmerged berries nestle in a spongy filling that wells up golden in the baking. However I don’t have a clue what that sort of filling actually is. Back to the drawing board. I do know that sweetened cream of any sort pairs well with tart raspberries, but alas I have neither milk nor cream nor cow on hand – another dead end. Chocolate? Chocolate is also a wonderful foil for raspberries - I recall a chocolate torte with raspberry coulis made by my brother’s friend Anabelle in Vancouver that was about the most soul-satisfying (or destroying) confection I have ever had the pleasure of sinking my teeth into. However, I reserve chocolate for extra special occasions given the lack of attention, due to the lack of attention Yukon farmers, even the most intrepid and zany, give the cocoa plant. Onward. I perused my cookbooks and discovered that while full of fabulous recipes and glorious pictures, I don’t seem to have any that have much of a focus on desserts – something I shall obviously have to remedy. To my standby, the Joy of Cooking. I perused the cakes, the fillings and the pies and pastries. A glimmer of a memory began to flicker – when I was little my mum and I would make a pear tart from one of the Sunset cookbooks, it featured on the cover glistening pear halves half-buried in a creamy filling, the whole drizzled with a sort of jelly and sprinkled with sliced almonds. Ok, it was no longer a glimmer, it was a full on 100-watt light bulb. At about this time I chanced upon the recipe for frangipane, one of those words that evokes delicious without any underlying understanding

Tarte aux poires – Yukon style Ever notice how desserts sound fancier in French? Stay tuned for a future article on the merits of the polar opposite from north of the channel - Jam Roly-Poly. INGREDIENTS 1 tart shell, pre-baked and cooled (I used the Joy of Cooking’s Pâte Brisée) 1 batch budget frangipane (based on the J oy of Cooking’s frangipane cream) 3 apples or pears 2 c poaching liquid 1 c Yukon raspberries

Budget Frangipane 1 ½ c water + 1/3 c powdered milk, scalded with a vanilla bean 1 ½ c sugar ½ c flour 4 egg yolks, local if possible 2 Tbs butter 2 Tbs finely chopped or ground sunflower seeds (I toast mine first) 1 tsp almond flavoring METHOD Cream the sugar, flour and egg yolks in a double boiler above hot water. Remove the vanilla bean from the hot milk (it can be dried and placed in the sugar bowl) and whisk milk into the egg yolks, pouring slowly. Whisk constantly until mixture thickens well, then remove from heat and add butter and seeds. Set aside to cool, whisking frequently to prevent a skin from forming. Poaching Liquid: 1 ½ c sugar dissolved in 2 c water, simmered with ½ a lemon, a cinnamon stick, 2 cloves and a half a vanilla bean. Halve and core three apples or pears – peeling optional. Poach the fruit till tender, 10-20 minutes depending on variety. Drain and cool, reserving liquid for future poaching or sweetening any number of things. Fill tart shell with frangipane cream, and arrange fruit halves with stem ends towards the centre, pressing them down slightly into the filling. Scatter the raspberries over top and drizzle a little juice as artfully as you like. Perhaps, but as the days grow shorter and there is more time to cook and think about cooking, there is space for a little creativity, and getting over the fear of multi-step dishes.

emembrance Day has taken more meaning for me lately. Recently Yukon Archives shared some information about some Japanese from Dawson City who served in the First World War. This was a complete surprise to me. I wondered, Why would they serve? The Dawson Daily News of June 21, 1918 reported that there were five Japanese out of the total of 93 Dawsonites who were part of the first selected draft to board the ship, Selkirk to Whitehorse, and then to Victoria, B.C. The five Japanese were: Kazue Matsumoto, Frank Morishige, Frank Murata, Yoshitada Murata and Daiken Nagao. In September I had the privilege to attend an event at the National Association of Japanese Canadians AGM and conference in Calgary, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the “Issei” volunteers. These were over 222 soldiers from the Japanese Canadian Volunteer Corps who fought in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Those who served wanted to prove their loyalty to Canada, with the hope that by doing so, all Japanese would be granted the ability to vote. In the program notes, Sherri Kajiwara, director of the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in Burnaby, B.C. wrote: They participated in the major battles of the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Lens, Avion, Hill 70, Passchendaele, Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, Denain, Valenciennes, Mons. Mining Upward

Yukon Astronomical Society wants us to take advantage of unique astronomy opportunities by Willow Gamberg

S

pace, science and sci-fi is one of the strongest current trends in popular media, from the rebooted version of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and the new Star Trek movies to galaxy-print everything, and the I F***ing Love Science Facebook page. While it’s fantastic to see the general public become more interested in the world of science and technology, lifelong enthusiasts like astronomer Anthony Gucciardo emphatically believe we still have a long way to go, and that, here in the Yukon, we have access to a serious advantage. Gucciardo and his astronomically-inclined wife, Catheryne Lord, moved from Montreal to Whitehorse in 2014; they met fellow enthusiast Viktor Zsohar, and the three formed the Yukon Astronomical Society (YAS), now called RASC - Yukon Centre (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada). As Gucciardo describes their collective vision: “A vision where the Yukon capitalizes on one of its many natural wonders – its dark skies – coupled with the initial net benefits from astronomical destination tourism... I like to say to people, ‘Instead of just mining down, the Yukon could also be mining up!’” Gucciardo sees the Yukon as an untapped goldmine of potential for the astronomy community, citing astronomical destination tourism

as a growing industry that will bring many visitors here. He says the territory has ideal viewing conditions, from our long winter nights to the sunny summer days, along with a unique geographical location, and excellent quality of the skies. He suggests that this potential can be increased with the creation of infrastructure, such as planetariums, observatories, and International Dark-Sky Associationcertified dark-sky parks. These are places that are good for viewing the night sky because there is no light pollution, and there is an expansive view of the sky. One observatory is well underway in Whitehorse, at the Takhini Hot Springs, where the YAS hopes to have a completed and functional facility by late November. If all testing and fine-tuning goes ahead, Gucciardo anticipates the facility will be open to the public by spring 2017. Along with this, YAS wants to add astronomy to the Yukon Government’s department of education curriculum. The society is presently involved with several initiatives to see astronomy education furthered in the Yukon, both in the education and public sectors; another facet of the of their work is a proposal to add additional astronomy-related material to Yukon school curriculums. Astronomy teaches valuable life

and work skills such as teamwork, leadership, innovation, resourcefulness and citizenship, says Gucciardo. “Astronomy added to the curriculum will encourage students to become active, responsible members of their communities,” says Gucciardo. “They will make valuable contributions to Canadian society, in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. “Astronomy and its related fields are at the forefront of science and technology; answering fundamental questions and driving innovation. Astronomy is interactive, fun, and dynamic. It gives students the chance to discover the universe, through their own eyes.” Students won’t be the only ones with access to an astronomy education, either. The Royal Canadian Astronomical Society will be offering both an educators’ workshop and public lecture from the Westar Lectureship series on Monday, Nov. 14, presented by professional astronomer Dr. Christa Van Laerhoven from the University of Toronto. “The intent of this program is to bring professional astronomers to communities that would otherwise not have easy access to us,” says Van Laerhoven. “This is the first year that the Westar Lectureship has included an astronomy workshop for educators. Our ultimate goal is to bring astronomy to as

Work on a new observatory in Whitehorse should be completed in late November, with the facility opening to the public in Spring 2017 many people as possible, and we feel that working with educators is a great way to do that.” She explains that the intended audience of the workshop will be educators from both formal and informal organizations, so long as there is some form of astronomy in the curriculum. For the lecture, which is intended for any interested members of the public, Van Laerhoven will be discussing planets. “Recent surveys looking for exoplanets (planets that orbit stars other than our sun) have found a large number of planetary systems where the planets are placed much closer together than the planets in our solar system are,” she says. “I will talk about what factors go into making a planetary system stable or unstable, explore the limit of how close you can pack planets and discuss the fate of our solar system. This lecture will not require attendees to have any prior astronomy knowledge.” “Astronomy has, and continues to revolutionize our thinking on a worldwide scale,” says Gucciardo. “In the past, astronomy has been

used to measure time, mark the seasons and navigate the vast oceans. As one of the oldest sciences, astronomy is part of every culture’s history and roots. It inspires us with beautiful images and promises answers to the big questions. It acts as a window into the immense size and complexity of space, putting Earth into perspective and promoting global citizenship and pride in our home planet.” The educators’ workshop and public lecture will be held at the Yukon College Whitehorse Campus. The workshop takes place 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the lecture takes place 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a night sky observation both before and after the talk. These projects are just a few of the Yukon Astronomical Society’s many ongoing works; more information is available on their website at YukonAstronomicalSociety.com. The Little Nag: Mindfullness

Aisy Doodles

with Bobbi Rhodes

with Aislinn Cornett

Life is Tough with The Little Nag

M

y dinner dishes don’t always get done after dinner. There is a chair in my living room that has a continuous pile of laundry to be folded. Sometimes I forget the kid’s helmet, or swimsuit, or permission slip for school. The dogs haven’t been bathed for two weeks. I try to be a calm and guiding teacher to my children, but sometimes I lose it and yell at them and then feel like crap later. I planned to plant a garden this summer, but never did. I managed to keep six flower baskets alive until the end of August, though. That was something. And then there’s those days when I can’t seem to find myself amongst the laundry and the dishes and the emails. Where am I? Who have I become? What happened to that bright, fun enthusiastic person I used to be? I feel like I’m drowning in all of the things that I should be doing, or didn’t do, or did do and now regret. All I want is to come up for air and stop struggling and find some peace. If you are like me and many of the people out there, The Little Nag in your head thinks you’re a lousy housekeeper, a mediocre parent and lazy sod who should be doing much more. We live in a culture where achievement is celebrated and progress is expected. We define ourselves by what we do or what we have done. If you’re not doing something then you’re doing nothing, and you fail at life. Well, as I’ve mentioned before, The Little Nag is a jerk. That voice in your head that never, ever stops yapping and drives you to depression, fear, anger and madness – that voice is your ego. And your ego is not who you are. You are a divine and perfect piece of the universe, meant to be here and now and learning how to

get through this thing we call life. And whether you’re a parent that forgot the library books, a spouse that forgot to pick up milk, a pet owner that is just too tired to walk the dog today, or an employee who hit “Reply All” when you should have hit “Reply” – you are doing great. You’re surviving. Yada yada nice flowery talk, Bobbi, but what do you do about it? Nothing. That’s what you do: nothing. You sit, you breathe, you let the thoughts that come – just go. You focus your attention on your breath, on the feel of the air coming through your nose, on the rise and fall of your chest, on the feeling of your heartbeat as it moves the blood around your body and nourishes it. You become alive and present right now, right here, where everything is just as it should be. The forgotten pizza order slip for school lunch doesn’t matter right this second. The spaghetti sauce pot soaking in the sink doesn’t need to be washed right now. That email from a client doesn’t need to be answered immediately. Right now, right here, you are alive, you are breathing, you are safe and warm and perfect. There is nothing wrong in this moment, it just is. Life is lived in this moment. The past is done and gone, the future isn’t here yet. They are only figments of your imagination that don’t really exist. It is only ever right now; not yesterday, not tomorrow, only now. God said to Moses “I am that I am,” not “I was” or “I will be.” Only “I am.” “Be still and know that I am” as you are, in the present moment. It is here that you will find peace. Try this: put down this paper, get comfortable in your seat, rest your hands on your lap or the arms of the chair. Put your feet flat on the ground and relax your shoulders. Now, look around. Just look

around and breathe. You may start to notice things that you never noticed before, and be inspired. See the colours around you, hear the sounds, watch the movement of the leaves in the wind. Notice the way the sun lights up the edges of the clouds. See, really see, the people around you. They aren’t men or women, tall or short, black or white, they just are, as you are. They are not separate or different than you, they just are. Life just is, here and now. Reliving the past won’t change it, practicing the future won’t make it happen, all that chatter in your head will only make you crazy. Recognizing the chatter and knowing that it is not you is like coming up for air and realizing that are truly alive. And this is how you live your life, instead of your life living you.

Aislinn Cornett is an art therapist, writer, artist and adventurer born in Whitehorse, Yukon. She currently lives, writes and doodles on the beach in Mexico.

Bobbi is a head case who studies and practices mindfulness and meditation in hopes of one day being sane. Her sincere hope is to learn and share and maybe help other people find sanity through mindfulness and meditation. She lives in Whitehorse with her family, two dogs and a hamster.

Beet Brownies

on’t be foolhardy and dismiss these brownies as a recipe for health and well-being. While the extra fibre and vitamins the beets give this treat are certainly welcome, these rich, flavourful brownies should not be relegated to the realm of diet food. It may seem counterintuitive, but beets add moisture and a rich sweetness to these brownies. And while you can get a moist texture and abundant sweetness from extra sugar and fat, you may as well make use of the wonderful local beets that you can find in grocery stores at this time of year.

Book Fair Fever in Frankfurt

Books, business, discussions and art on an international stage

PHOTOS: by Elke Reinauer

G

ood news first: Canada will be a guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Bad news: We have to wait four years. 2020 is far away, but Livres Canada is already excited about it and posting the news on its website. This year, Flanders (a part of Belgium where the people speak Dutch) and the Netherlands were the guests of honour at the book fair, which takes place every year in October. I attended this year. It took place from Oct. 19 to 23. The motto was, “This is What we Share.” Germany shares the North Sea coast with these two regions, as well as a well developed literary scene, including authors like Margriet de Moor or Cees Noteboom from the Netherlands. As I enter the guest pavilion of Flanders and the Netherlands I am surrounded by the sea: on huge pieces of fabric hanging from the ceiling are projections of a beach. The light changes and the waves are rolling in. Chairs are set up in the room to sit down and relax – just what I need after a day of running around the book fair. The Frankfurt Book Fair draws huge crowds. Almost nine times

the population of the Yukon is visiting the Book Fair in five days: about 300,000 people. Editors, business people, book-buyers, artists, writers, bloggers, and me: one of 8,000 registered journalists. I settle in a comfy chair, rest my feet and review the day: It started early by walking through the hall of international publishers: large publishing companies such as Simon and Schuster, Random House, and also small companies from Africa and Asia. Here it is all about business: selling rights for books. The hustle and bustle of the business ended as I found my way to another hall: The Arts+, which is a new concept at this year’s book fair: fashion, design and fine art in one hall. British artist David Hockney displayed his latest piece here: a complete collection of his artwork in a huge book. The book costs about 2,500 Euro and contains 62 years of Hockney’s work. It was set up on a stand so visitors could browse through it. The Arts+ exhibition shows that books are not only about literature; they are about beauty, too. In an area named Beautiful Books, visitors could judge the most

Book Fair Fever in Frankfurt ... continued from Page 12 beautiful book. It was inspiring to browse through all these stunning books. Discussions and readings were happening everywhere at the book fair. I moved on to listen to Turkish author Can Dündar talking about his newest book, We are Arrested. He was editor-in-chief for Cumhurriyet, which is a Turkish newspaper. Dündar was imprisoned because he wrote about things the government didn’t want publicized. In the discussion he talked about the freedom of the press and the circumstances in Turkey. His latest book is about politics in Turkey and his time in prison. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech are huge topics at the book fair. Everywhere in Europe journalists losing their jobs, and newspapers – like recently in Hungary – are being shut down by government. There are so many fascinating presentations, discussions and books at the Frankfurt Book Fair, that if you go, you need to decide what to focus on. But sometimes you find unexpected treasures, like I did when I walked by a stand of independent magazines. “We have a magazine for redheads,” a representative at the magazine table told me, noting my red hair. It is called MC1R and published by a German designer.

p

The Netherlands Pavilion, which was a refuge from the busy-ness of the book fair

Because they sell some copies to the UK, USA and Canada, it is written in English, the editor in chief, Tristan Rodgers, told me. I am astonished and fascinated by this well-created magazine.

The topics are all about redheadgatherings, issues like freckles and features of red haired artists. Tristan Rodgers and I had a nice chat about ginger issues and magazinemaking. As I walked away to the Flanders and the Netherlands pavilion I felt inspired. And this was only the first day of the book fair. Elke Reinauer is a writer based in Germany with strong ties to the Yukon. Please email comments about her articles to editor@whatsupyukon.com.

RECHERCHE DE PARTICIPANTES Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

Bordeaux vs Meritage

Meritage offers the richness of Bordeaux wines, but they originate from many regions

P

icking up a new bottle of wine can be as difficult as cracking a secret code. What do all of these symbols and words mean? What mystical juice is hiding inside the bottle? At the end of the day, we just want it to be tasty – right? Let’s decode one of these mystery words: Meritage. Meritage is an invented word that combines the words merit and heritage. As a result, the pronunciation rhymes with heritage. These are blended wines that use only Bordeaux grapes, which include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, St. Macaire, Gros Verdot or Carmenère grapes. Winemakers use their best grapes to produce high-quality wines that are similar in style to the famous Bordeaux wines from France. Only wines that come from the Bordeaux region can be called by that name so, winemakers outside of that region created the term Meritage to indicate that their wines are similar. Meritage and Bordeaux blends are famous for good reason. Winemakers take their best grapes and blend them to balance their good and not-so-good qualities to create delicious, balanced wines. There are also wines made from the same grapes that are labeled Cabernet Merlot, Malbec Merlot, Red Wine Blend or other generic terms. The word Meritage is a trade-

Cabernet Merlot for $20.90 or Augey, Bordeaux for $17.25. Which bottle you prefer will depend on your personal taste. A quick test to determine your taste is to choose which beverage you prefer: black coffee, coffee with milk and sugar, or tea. Black coffee drinkers are usually tolerant tasters. People who like to add milk and sugar are often sensitive tasters. Finally, tea drinkers are typically very sensitive tasters. Dave Broadfoot as Bobby Clobber

Wasting Away in Geezerville with Ken Bolton

Farewell to a gentle, genuine funnyman much better through his delicious character profiles on CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce. Who could forget the hilariously-stunned Big Bobby Clobber, who clearly took too many pucks to the head without benefit of a helmet? Or the gauche, unnamed Honourable Member for Kicking Horse Pass? Some comic premises never grow stale. One of these was the image of the hapless Sgt. Renfrew and his police dog, Cuddles, in their lonely log cabin on the 14th floor of Mountie headquarters. Somewhere in each Renfrew sketch would come the unforgettable line, delivered with impeccable Broadfoot timing: “... When I regained consciousness.” No matter often I heard it, or how far ahead I anticipated it,

that line cracked me up every time. Arguably, Broadfoot was the quintessential 20th-century Canadian comic. He was cheeky without being gross (although I’ve seen him do corporate gigs with slightly more risqué material). His satire could be pointed, but was never mean-spirited. With his lanky frame and slightly goofy smile, he came across as a guy you just had to love. In 1980, perhaps ‘81, I got to see Broadfoot’s gentle, genuine side up close, without the filter of scripted material or assumed characters. He was in Calgary to headline the Stampede, but planned to spend a month in the area. When I saw a note on the CBC bulletin board that he wanted a small

place to rent, I didn’t hesitate. My house was tiny, and slightly in shambles from renovation, but I offered it to him free, provided he wouldn’t mind sharing for the first week and looking after my garden for the next three. He was a considerate, delightful guest. Each morning, he would emerge from his room in gown and slippers, and modestly ask for feedback on something he’d written the night before. For a week, it was like two pals in a log cabin at the top of Mountie headquarters. Farewell, friend. Thanks for the memories. Keep smiling. Ken Bolton is a freelance writer who lives southeast of Whitehorse.

O

nce you reach a certain age and stage in life, it’s no longer shocking to learn that some cherished celebrity from your youth has crossed the Great Divide. If a movie star or blues singer you’ve admired for years passes away in their 80s or 90s, a common response is to say, “That’s sad. But they had a good run. Thanks for the memories.”

Over the years, I’ve learned to accept the dying of certain lights that once shone brilliantly in public. But a few days ago, one such passing brought a real lump to my throat. The first time I saw the iconic Canadian funnyman, Dave Broadfoot, was during a tour of the musical-comedy revue, Spring Thaw, sometime in the 1960s. Later, I would get to know him

onathan Henkelman lies on his back on a yoga mat, legs lifted and bent, the bottoms of his bare feet facing the ceiling. I am standing at his feet, looking down at him. He asks me to lean forward and let his feet press against my lower belly to support me. I try a few times, but I pull back when it feels like I’m going to fall on him. He asks me to try again, and allow his feet to fully plant under my ribs. I lean farther this time, most of my weight now against his feet, my heels starting to lift from the floor. Henkelman raises his hands and I reach forward, placing my palms on his. He tells me to keep leaning and that he will slowly straighten his legs skyward, lifting my entire body off the floor with his feet. Feeling a little zap of fear, I let it go and trust he can hold me. I teeter forward as my feet leave the floor. I’m now above him, parallel to him, my legs straight out behind me like superwoman. I’m flying. This is acroyoga: a combination of yoga and acrobatics that Henkelman has been teaching in Whitehorse since August. It’s increasingly popular across southern Canada and the U.S. and now has a small-but-growing following in Whitehorse. To do acroyoga you need at least two people: a base (the bottom person) and a flyer (the person being supported). There should also be a spotter for safety. The practice attracts young, fit, gutsy people who enjoy inversions, being up in the air and testing their strength and courage. But Henkelman says you don’t have to be daring or fit; you just have to be comfortable stating your limits. “If someone wanted to come in, and they were not the sort of classic yoga body, like absolutely, you’re

welcome, but you do have to have the confidence to say this is my edge.” Sometimes that edge is not where you think. Henkelman remembers practicing with a 300-pound woman who assumed she would be the base. “I’m like ‘Do you want to fly?’ and she’s like ‘Omigod I’m going to crush you!’” he recalls. But he convinced her. “By the end she would let me fly her – doing basic things. I couldn’t necessarily do the most fantastic stuff, but it was fascinating to see her come to life.” The benefits are beyond physical, he says, as he has noticed in his own life. “I struggle a lot with depression. I struggle a lot with mental health issues and coming to acro – all of a sudden I have all this energy because the things that I need out of life are happening – the playfulness, the trust, the touch, the connection, the communication.” Henkelman teaches at Jessica Read’s Breath of Life studio, where acroyoga classes will continue as long as there’s interest. Read, a 12year yogi, has found the new practice challenging. But she has observed that athletic talent is not nearly as important as the ability to rely on your base, your spotter and yourself. “The biggest one is trust… and being present. You’ve just got to be in your body and feel – and be aware of how you’re holding yourself.” For more information about acroyoga in Whitehorse go to www. BreathofLifeStudio.com. For photos and videos of acroyoga in action, check out the Acroyoga Montreal studio’s web page at Acroyoga.com. Becky Striegler is a Whitehorsebased writer.
