could be wrong, but I’ve never bought into the notion of predestination – that the cosmic fix is in, and our ultimate fate is set by forces beyond our control. By the same token, I don’t subscribe to the idea of karma – the Hindu-Buddhist belief that what we sow in one lifetime determines what we will reap in the next. But I’m not foolish enough to spurn Newton’s Third Law of Motion, the one about every action having an equal and opposite reaction. Old Ike Newton was one seriously smart cookie, even after getting bonked on the head by a falling apple. With the exception of the rare miscreant whose bad deeds go unrecorded or unpunished, I’m comfortable with the concept that there are consequences to our actions. How else can we teach our children to make sensible choices? No matter how you wish to phrase it – “act in haste, repent in leisure” or “what goes around comes around” – the piper will

eventually show up to demand payment. My wallet is considerably lighter this week because of one such lesson. No, I didn’t have to pay a huge fine for driving while stupid, or settle a fat defamation suit for accusing some (alleged) blithering idiot of being a blithering idiot without being able to prove it. It all came down to my habitual indulgence in the Eighth Deadly Sin: woolly mindedness. Throw in a propensity for procrastination, the attention span of a gnat and a near-narcoleptic ability to fall asleep at the drop of an eyelid, and the seeds of my comeuppance quickly hit fertile ground. Let me back up a bit. Ever since high school, I’ve had a habit of pulling all-nighters at least once a week. I try to justify it by proclaiming that a properly-engineered machine shouldn’t need to stand idle for one-third of its existence. The reality is more mundane. It’s usually because I’ve allowed

Skip ahead to my wife’s saucepans. Yes, the ones she’s had since her first wedding nearly 30 years ago. Lovely pots they were. At least, until each of them got scorched beyond redemption in separate recent incidents while she was out of town. Don’t ask me how; I wasn’t paying attention. Perhaps I was busy writing, with all my inconvenient senses turned to “Do Not Disturb”. Perhaps I nodded off momentarily. Fortunately, the only consequence I faced for my negligence was monetary. On the plus side, the new pots are even lovelier. And shinier. With nice, thick, high-tech bottoms that might withstand a bit of neglect more sturdily. He gives much credit to Jana Swales, executive director of the Yukon Transportation Museum, and to his museum’s curator, Angharad Wenz, for many of the ideas and execution that went into the creation of the panels. Aside from the travelling exhibit, a complete set of the panels will be mounted for display at the two museums. “Tentatively, there will be two venues in Whitehorse in 2018, and then a stop in Mayo earlier in the summer, and a last stop in Dawson later in the summer,” Somerville said. Most of the panels are set up to resemble newspaper pages from that time period, with actual headlines from contemporary papers, and stories that reflect the stages of the disaster, from news about the annual exodus to post-mortems after the fact. he Canadian Pacific steamer Princess Sophia ran aground on Vanderbilt Reef on the Inland Passage after leaving Skagway on October 23, 1918. It was the last run of the season to Vancouver and Victoria and the ship contained 353 passengers from the Yukon and Alaska who had taken the popular decision not to spend the winter in the North. As chronicled in The Sinking of the Princess Sophia by Ken Coates and Bill Morrison, a whole fleet of rescue vessels made their way to her aid, but were driven off by the increasing storm. By the next morning the boat was gone with all hands – about 200 of whom were Dawsonites: men, women, children, business people and dredge workers who had just finished their season. Coates and Morrison subtitled their book “Taking the North Down With Her” and several historians have pointed out that this disaster did more damage to the population of Dawson City than did all the lives lost in the Great War. Indeed, the wreck was of such magnitude that it might well have been considered the Titanic event of the West Coast, had not the war come to an end just weeks later and chased it out of the news. ighteen years ago three sheep hunters named Bill Hanlon, Warren Ward and Mike Roche happened upon the body of a young Indigenous man while crossing a glacier in Tatshenshini-Alsek Park on Champagne and Aishihik First Nations traditional territory in northern B.C. Unbeknownst to the hunters, they had discovered the oldest natural mummified body unearthed to date in North America. The man was frozen in place during the Little Ice Age in the summertime, c.1450–1700 AD. The story of this mysterious “Canadian ice man” comes fullcircle this year with the release of the Royal British Columbia Museum’s new book, Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį: Teachings from Long Ago Person Found. The volume published October 31 is the product of a groundbreaking collaboration between the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and Royal B.C. Museum scientists. “It was my life for three months working day and night,” said Diane Strand, director of community wellness at the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, who was working as a heritage resource officer with CAFN during the project. The Tatshenshini-Alsek Park is under a co-management agreement between CAFN and the B.C. government, in which CAFN has sole responsibility over heritage matters. “We had stewardship over him (the Long Ago Person Found). We knew that he was probably one of us,” she said. After consulting with elders in the community it was decided that the scientists at the Royal B.C. museum would be allowed to study the remains of the Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį – which means “Long Ago Person Found” in Southern Tutchone – for one year. After that he would be given a traditional cremation on the site where he was found and a potlatch was to be held in his honour. It was important to Strand that the body be treated in a respectful way during the study. “This was someone’s son and his body was our responsibility. It was about honouring him and his family in the proper way,” she said.

The 700+ page book features contributions from First Nation citizens and other experts drawn from a mix of scholarly and oral traditions With that in mind CAFN also conducted DNA tests with 241 volunteers and they were able to confirm 17 people related to the man though the maternal line, 15 of whom identified with the Wolf clan. (Children are born into the mother’s clan under the matrilineal system common among Yukon, B.C. and Alaska First Nations). The current day relations are roughly even split between coastal and inland dwellers. The man was likely a mix of coastal and interior Yukon, B.C. and Alaska First Nations. This would reflect trade routes between communities at the time. It would also make sense based on his DNA, diet and the belongings that he carried with him at the time of death. This hypothesis would also coincide with the location where he was found – along what Strand said was once a popular glacial trade route between coastal and inland communities. Strand said that while the

Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį was an important discovery for the scientific community, for Indigenous people it was more than that. She said that the entire process from the discovery to his cremation ceremony helped her connect with her own spirituality on a deeper level. “It’s who we are. It’s our ancestry. It’s given pride to our future generations and our kids.’’ The book will be introduced in the Yukon during the Haines Junction Mountain Festival, which takes place December 8 to 10 in Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction). The Long Ago Person Found’s belongings will also be on display at the Da Kų Cultural Centre in Haines Junction. Michael Bramadat-Willcok is a journalist and researcher based in Whitehorse. He cut his teeth as a documentary filmmaker in the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal and Tibet. He worked as a journalist in Quebec before moving to the Yukon.

Stepping Up with Darrell Hookey

Animals need the Humane Society; the Humane Society needs people

Brent Slobodin brought his love of volunteering to the Yukon in 1988. Today, he is using his skills to help the Humane Society of Yukon

verybody knows that the Humane Society of Yukon takes care of our beloved animals in distress at the societyrun Mae Bachur Animal Shelter. But who takes care of the people who take care of the animals? Well, that would be Brent Slobodin, the president of the local Humane Society. “It is a vital operation and we run it on a shoestring,” he said from a desk he borrowed at the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter. “A lot of it is a labour of love; we do it for the animals and a lot of people are willing to help us.” A lot of people. Slobodin lists them off: a paid staff that keeps the non-profit facility running while pets are found homes; there are volunteer dog walkers that range from one to six a day; foster families; volunteers who run the Wednesday Bingo games at the Elk’s Hall; volunteers who help out with garage sales, golf tournaments and any other fundraising event they can come up with; and a board of directors that takes care of the paperwork and planning for all of this. Putting those plans into action, and keeping all of those people happy and productive, is the executive director Dan Moore. “Dan gives us a monthly report,” Slobodin said of his own management style. “He doesn’t need me to come down and say how I want things to run. “So I talk with Dan on the

phone more than coming down here. “He has a busy staff and they all have a busy day.” With Moore in place, Slobodin says he can work on finishing the society’s constitution and working with the treasurer on finances. Then there is reaching out to the board members to keep them connected. “Our board is a ‘working board,’” he says. “We don’t have a large staff that can do much more beyond taking care of the animals. “We have a good core group and a great treasurer; we have been able to sort out our finances and get on an even keel.” When Slobodin joined the board two and a half years ago, it was a turbulent time and there were ongoing controversies. Board members were leaving. He could have found an easier society to join. Since high school, he has lived a life of volunteerism. More recently he was president of the Yukon Historical Museums Association – “That fit me perfectly because of my background in history.” He was also a baseball coach – “Because it gave me the opportunity to be out on the field with my boys at night.” And he was on the board for Challenge Disability Resource Group – “I really believe in what they are doing.” Combine this volunteering background with his 23 years

working for Yukon Government, mostly in Advanced Education as a director and assistant deputy minister, Slobodin was identified as someone who could help. “The person who asked me to help out gave me a sense the organization needed help,” he said. “This is one of those organizations that have some really good hearts in it, but not always those with management skills.” Today, things have turned around. “There was some controversy in the past, but that is not us now,” Slobodin said. “We are doing well; people see us out in the community; and the government has reinvested in us.” But they still need more people. Slobodin says there are a lot of people retiring early who, like him, need to keep busy. And young people tend to volunteer with sports organizations, but he says the Humane Society needs their “enthusiasm and energy”. People can volunteer at the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter or through its website at www.HumaneSocietyYukon.ca. In addition, the 2018 Whitehorse Firefighters Calendar is available through the website and at The Feed Store. Proceeds go to the Humane Society. o you miss browsing a variety of vendors and their wares at the summer Fireweed Community Market at your convenience? Well, fear not. Vendors and their crafting friends are gathering for The 12 Days of Christmas Market this December. The event takes place in the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre from Friday, December 8 to Tuesday, December 19. The event is run by the Fireweed Community Market Society and hosts a total of 80 vendors. It is the largest multi-day market in Whitehorse. It has grown from a one-day event in the Horwoods Mall in 2005, to a five-day event in the

old Royal Canadian Legion on Alexander Street. By the time it moved to the Old Fire Hall, it was a grand event 12 days long. Taking place at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre again this year, vendors display their wares, not only on tables, but also in well-designed vertical displays. The whole market is set up like an organized store that allows you to browse and bring your selections to a central till for purchase. Just like any store this time of year, the Fireweed Community Market’s 12 Days of Christmas starts out quiet on a Monday and slowly becomes busier as the week goes on. Choose the ideal shop-

ping experience for yourself.Weekends will offer live music for background. As well, you’ll find a community table featuring a constantly changing variety of products from new vendors. You can find most anything you can imagine, from consumables such as sausage, kale chips, baked goods, licorice, spices, coffee, syrup, jam, mushrooms, tortillas and popcorn, to wonderfully smelling soaps, balms, oils, candles and bath soaks. he Yukon Craft Society is holding its second annual Spruce Bog Boutique in the Westmark Whitehorse Hotel from December 7 to 20. While there are a great many craft sales throughout Whitehorse this time of year, there was a definite interest, from both vendors and the buying public, to have a 14 day event. According to event organizers, the event was created for vendors who couldn’t get into the 12 Days of Christmas and Spruce Bog vendors who were prepared to do a multi day sale. Last year, organizers did a questionnaire for vendors and customers and it was a huge success; according to organizers the response was amazing. This year, the Boutique will be set up in Room 5, down the hall from the ballroom. It will be set up like a store, featuring all the vendors’ displays, with one till in the centre, accepting debit and

credit cards, as well as cash. There will be vendors, volunteering as floor walkers, available to help with questions and suggestions. The Spruce Bog Boutique is working together with the 12 Days of Christmas to create a different experience for each venue. While there may be a few vendors at both places, they made sure to display different products. And, 12 Days and Spruce Bog Boutique are sharing advertising- a bookmark; the green side with the snowman depicts the details of the 12 Days event while the red side with the Christmas tree describes the highlights of the Spruce Bog Boutique. The bookmark, both sides of it, was designed and created by artist, Jolie Patterson, who can be found at the Spruce Bog Boutique. This year, the Boutique will feature 30 vendors and you can expect to find a multitude of gift ideas, such as trivets, quilts,

An afternoon of coffee and fresh ideas Hear the writing and poetry from local writers at the ‘Fresh Roasted Writing’ event, taking place Dec. 10 at Bean North

n Sunday, December 10, you are invited to come out to the roastery at Bean North Café and listen to readings by several poets and writers. Kathy Munro and Elisabeth Weigand are putting on the event, in which both of them will read from their own work along with the other literary treats that they have planned for your entertainment. There will be readings from recent work by the late Jessica Simon, who was a writer based in Whitehorse. Kathy Munro will launch two new publications. One of her own, a leaflet by Leaf Press called Waiting. This work is part of the Sky leaflet series that was launched earlier this year at the Atlin Arts and Music Festival. Her second new publication is an anthology published by Anvil Press of Vancouver, edited by Vancouver Poet Laureate Rachel Rose, called Sustenance: Writers from BC and Beyond on the Subject of Food. It was launched in October at the Vancouver Writers Festival. Munro will read some of her work published in the anthology and a poem by Vancouver writer Elena Johnson that has a real Yukon feel to it. Johnson has previously done research in the Yukon. Laurel Parry is among the other writers who will be reading their work at the December 10 event read. Parry joined Munro and Weigand to write on Wednesdays at the café during the past year. These Wednesday meetings are an

ongoing event open to everyone. Members of Solstice Haiku will also read - this haiku discussion group met monthly at Bean North over the summer, in the wall tent with the yellow door. When Kathy Munro told me their special guest for the December 10 event will be Yvonne Blomer, the word “bard” came to mind, with images of a kind of minstrel standing by the main gate of a castle shouting out poetic renditions of happenings from within and outside of the castle walls. Yvonne Blomer is the Poet Laureate of Victoria; the work she will read is also in the new Anvil Press publication. The title “Poet Laureate” reminds me of how I see a bard of olden days. When I consulted a dictionary, “laureate” means crowned with laurels in token of honour. “Minstrel” means a medieval singer, musician or poet. The root of the word “minstrel” means an employed person with an official duty. The origins of the word

“bard” are more vague and rather complex, but according to Scottish tradition a bard is a strolling minstrel. I do like that image and hope you will stroll through the beautiful winter snowscape woods of the Takhini Hotsprings area while visiting to listen to the readings. Presented in warmth of the café, you can enjoy sipping your hot tea or coffee and maybe a delicious Bean North snack. The authors will have books for sale at this event.

f you like homemade bread, then let me take you back to my mother’s kitchen, back to the 1950s. Those were the days when men never wore their hats in a building when a lady was present, when men always opened the door for a lady and never walked through a door ahead of a lady. In those days, it was called “Respect for Our Women Folk.” Oh yes, in those days, a man always walked on the outside when walking their lady down the street. PS, I’m still from the old school. ZUCCHINI BREAD Mix these ingredients together: 3 eggs 2 cups white sugar 1 cup Crisco oil 1 tsp vanilla 2 cups of raw, grated zucchini with the peel left on In a separate bowl, mix these dry ingredients together very well then fold into the above mixture. 1⅓ cups of white all-purpose flour ¼ tsp baking powder 2 tsp baking sod a 1 tsp salt 2 tsp cinnamon 1 cup of chopped walnuts Bake in preheated oven at 350ºF for about 50 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.

Cherry loaf cakes LEMON BREAD Ingredients: ½ cup shortening 1 cup sugar (first amount) 2 eggs 1½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder ½ cup milk ¼ cup chopped nuts 1 lemon: the juice and the rind, grated ¼ cup sugar (second amount) Method: Cream shortening and add one cup sugar and eggs and beat in well. Add flour, salt and baking powder, alternating with milk. Add chopped nuts and lemon rind. Pour into greased standard loaf pan and bake at 350ºF for about 40 minutes. While the bread is bak-

ing, dissolve the ¼ cup of sugar into the lemon juice. As soon as you take the bread out of the oven, pour the lemon juice and sugar overtop of the bread. Let it stand in the pan until cool, then carefully turn out and rest on the cake rack top side up. APPLE BREAD Ingredients: 2 Tbsp butter ½ cup sugar 1 egg yol k ¾ cup raw apple 1¾ cups all-purpose flour 3½ tsp baking powder ¾ tsp sal t 1 tsp grated nutmeg ½ cup milk Method: Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg yolk and beat very thoroughly. Add grated apple. Measure flour and add baking powder, salt and nutmeg, then sift them into the mixture, alternating with milk, and stirring after each addition. Turn onto a greased 9 x 4 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350ºF for about 30 minutes. CRANBERRY COFFEE BREAD Sift together: 2 cups flour 1 tsp salt ½ tsp baking soda 1½ tsp baking powder Then stir in 1 cup white sugar. In a measuring cup, mix together: ½ cup orange juice 2 Tbsp boiling water 2 Tbsp melted shortening Add one well beaten egg into the measuring cup, then fold the mixture into the dry ingredients until just moist. Fold in 1½ cups halved cranberries. Bake in wellgreased loaf pan at 325ºF for 60 minutes. DATE AND NUT LOAF Ingredients: 1 pound of dates 2 tsp baking soda 2 cups of warm water

Set oven at 425ºF and line a baking sheet. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a sauté pan over medium high heat, cook the onion and pepper until beginning to soften then add ground meat. Cook until meat is fully browned and the pan is dry, about 10 minutes. Add cheese and allow to cool.

by Anne Lewis For the parents who had heard that Santa Claus wasn’t going to be able to make it to the Whitehorse Winterval Festival Santa Claus Parade and the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Main Street, you can now let your children know he will be there – with bells on! Yes, we all heard the grinchly news in late October that the Santa Claus Parade would be cancelled – and in minutes the story was being shared across our northern airways and began trending on social media. Could Santa really not show for his very own Parade? Fortunately, a group of elves was in the wings brainstorming away to make sure Santa made an appearance! Just 48 hours after the impending cancellation notice, the call came in to Unlikely Events Yukon (UEY) Artistic Director Angela Drainville, that the Families of Casino Mining Corp. wanted to save the Santa Claus Parade. Their sponsorship was enough to provide the key funding to save Whitehorse’s Santa Claus Parade and ensure a special Whitehorse and Yukon community tradition would continue. Whitehorse Winterval Festival takes place Saturday, December 9. The festivities kick off at at the Macbride Museum at 1 p.m. with crafts for kids and photos with Santa Claus. The activities

Through dark to the light A review of Winter Child by Quebecois author Virginia Pésémapéo Bordeleau

But after this early brush with death, her intuition warns her that “winter” will arrive prematurely in her son’s life. Winter Child, the first novel by Virginia Pésémapéo Bordeleau to be translated to English, is a lyrical journey through a mother’s grief of losing and outliving her child. With it, Pésémapéo Bordeleau, a Cree writer and visual artist based in Quebec, has created a striking and emotive script based, in part, as an autobiography. In this story of mother and son — both remaining unnamed throughout — “winter” is used as a metaphor for death. Throughout her son’s life, the mother sees a constant force threatening to take him; and when it finally does, his death is a burden too profound to carry. a spiritual one. If this sounds like an ambiguous plot, it is because Winter Child reads more like a poem. And instead of a chronological line of events, Pésémapéo Bordeleau uses words to move you through moments

of a woman’s thunderous sorrow. As the mother stumbles through her grief, she converses with it, as if the way to heal heartbreak is to name it in descriptive detail: “I am a lustrelost woman who hides behind her autumnal beauty, her abundant leaves dying with the seasons’ suns, her foliage quivering still in the winds of life, all for the memory of splendour to be shared with you when winter has passed and I reach the end of the path lined with stones that wound my feet.” Overlapped the story of mother and son, are poignant vignettes of the mother’s own troubled past. Gripping memories of love

Pésémapéo Bordeleau shows the reader how guilt is often a parasite of grief; and as the mother weathers her son’s death, she starts to release the albatross of continuing life without him. Pésémapéo Bordeleau is a talented wordsmith and Winter Child is an amazing work of art. Whitehorse’s 100 Women Who Care organizers are asking Yukon women to come out in full force for this year’s fundraising event Dec. 13 at the Gold Rush Inn

itting in a circle with the seven women and organizers of the sixth annual 100 Women Who Care event is a bit like curling up fireside. The ambiance is cozy, intimate and undeniably supportive. The answer “Because we care” resounds like a unanimous chorus, followed by laughter, when asked how Karen Barnes, Jacqueline Bedard, Lesley Cabott, Kristina Craig, Sally MacDonald, Anne Pleydon and Joy Waters got involved in the fundraising initiative. “The event is just that, 100 women (or more) who are passionate about the community and who want to learn about community organizations and enjoy being in a room with other like-minded women,” Bedard said. On December 13th, for one hour, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Yukon women are invited to gather for this event at the Gold Rush Inn in the Town Hall meeting space – which has been graciously donated by Northern Vision Development. Every year the names of the chosen organizations are kept under wrap until the event, as the value of 100 Women Who Care is about getting out into the community and connecting with people. “The number one thing people say after the event is how incredible the feeling is in the room with all the women in the community,” Pleydon said. “It’s about fun, learning, women and networking,” Craig said. “And to find out what’s happening in our community.” Craig explained that many non-profit organAizations have projects that are difficult to fund because the funding bodies have specific criteria. The beauty of 100 Women Who Care is that donated money is a gift to each organization. “We recognize there are sometimes urgent needs where you don’t require tons of money, but the money at the right time and place can have a huge impact,” Craig said. “For those in a front line agency, it’s a hugely supportive and caring thing to have.” It was Karen Barnes, Yukon College president and vice chancellor, who was first inspired to create the initiative in Whitehorse six years ago after she attended a similar event in Lethbridge, Alberta. She wanted to help bring some of these community projects into the spotlight, so Barnes contacted Kristina Craig, who, she said, is a “woman in the know” in terms of Yukon organizations, projects and campaigns. “We had lunch and decided it

would be a great idea, and we named these five women who would come onboard,” Barnes said with a smile, gesturing to the women surrounding her. These seven caring women might not have known each other before starting the 100 Women Who Care Whitehorse chapter, but all were united by their longstanding activism in their professional careers and by their desire to give back to their

community. “For me it was having just retired after working in government for my lifelong career, and this seemed like a nice way to give something back while I was enjoying retirement,” Joy Waters said. Anne Pleydon, who manages the social media aspect of the event, joined the group last year, after attending her first 100 Women Who Care event in December 2016. “I was so inspired by the feeling in the room, I went up to Karen and asked if they have a Facebook or Twitter page, and

said I would love to run that for you,” Pleydon said. Of their organizing team, Barnes said they knew it had to be a highly efficient in order to garner the involvement of these busy women. “We made a pledge that we only spend an hour organizing the event and an hour doing it – and we manage to do that every time.” Over the course of the last five years, the 100 Women Who Care event has brought in more than $35,500 to a diverse range of Yukon community organizations. Though the event is organized for women by women, the organizers encourage similar fundraisers be started for men, families and children, as well. The premise is to gather as many people as possible together to raise awareness and to support a cause. “We also want to say that the 100 Women Who Care are the women in the room, but also the people who like and share the Facebook group, who are spreading the word, and anyone who puts in a good word.” The 100 Women Who Care event takes place Wednesday, December 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Gold Rush Inn. Art is in the eyes of the beholder by Lisa Martin Art can be in the form of a pencil, paintbrush, or even a scroll saw. My husband and local artist, Murray Martin has been both an outdoor and political columnist for over half a century and his creations just keep getting bigger. Being a writer has it’s challenges, first and foremost is writer’s block, which every writer will go through at some point. Some 30 years ago, as a way of managing his writer’s block, Murray decided to go out to the garage, turn his scroll saw on with a blade that travels over a 100 miles per hours and just inches from your

fingers, pick up a picture of a wolf, dog, duck or some other bird or animal and put the scroll blade to work. Sometimes they start out as the size of a calling card and can soon become up to a size of a seven foot arbour truly taking shape becoming pieces of art. Once I saw him start with a couple of curved lines and it wound up being a bear sitting on the shore of a lake looking at the mountains on the other side. Early one morning he was working on his book when I left for work, but when I had returned, there

were bear and moose cutouts standing together as the backdrop of an outdoor wildlife park bench. He secured it to the back fence and added other cuttings over time. Although remedying his writer’s block, it made him think about creating bigger and better pieces of art to tell a different kind of story. So 14 years ago, combining his love for wildlife, the outdoors and his wife to be, he cut out a beautiful arbour made from cedar under which we would stand and take our vows. To

this day that arbour still stands in our back yard. Why stop there? Three weeks ago Murray designed a new arbour, which had cuttings of big game animals such as moose, deer, and bears used as the side panels and tucked in the middle was a beautiful love seat to compliment the cuttings. Then his love of birds drew him to build a second arbour with the side panels cut into different types of birds. Just recently he drew a picture of our Siberian husky and took it to the scroll saw and cut

it out from cedar. It hangs on our wall, but I have a feeling that it, too, will soon be built into another beautiful arbour that will daunt our back yard. An artist’s challenge never ends and they always seem to go one step further. I had asked him what was he going to create for Christmas and a big smile came upon his face, so no doubt you will see a few deer and a Santa Claus set up on our front lawn or across the roof of our house as the holiday rolls around. Recently a neighbor asked Murray if he could cut one out with about a half dozen or more different dogs on it. Who knows what will be next in his scroll artistry imagination, maybe fish, airplanes, fancy cars or even dinosaurs? Lisa Martin resides in the Yukon.
