Whatever happened to the artful riposte? W e all know nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. My concern is that the noble art of the insult is also on the skids these days. When I was a kid, one of the worst taunts you could throw at someone was, “Ah, your mother wears army boots.” Stupid. Childish. Meaningless. So what if Joey’s old lady wore army boots? They’re good, sturdy stuff. Nowadays, that insult would carry no freight. Maybe Joey’s old lady actually is in the armed forces. She could even be a big shot, like Lieutenant-General Christine Whitecross. Tangling with Joey might not be so smart. For well over a year now, we have witnessed the world’s most powerful (or powerless, depending on how you see things) person hurling insults so puerile they would make even the 9-yearold me feel ashamed. Among his most (or least) inspired have been those aimed at “Little Marco” Rubio, “Crooked

In days past, we had people like Sir Winston Churchill, a world-class orator and master of the insult PHOTO: Pixabay Hillary” Clinton, and “Cryin’ Chuck” Schumer. In President 45’s defence, it can’t be easy to accept being pilloried as “Cheeto Benito”, “Adolf Twitler”, “Pudgy McTrumpcake” (and much worse) on almost a daily basis. I mean, come on. Whatever one may think about its current occupant, at least the office of the U.S. presidency deserves more respect than poor old Rodney Dangerfield ever got. Admittedly, The Donald himself is complicit in this whole insulting mess. Like many 9-year-olds with impulse control issues, he loves to dish it out, but he can’t take it in return. Perhaps he misinterpreted the biblical lesson about it being more

blessed to give than to receive. And despite his reputed wealth and undisputed fame, at the age of 71 he remains as thin-skinned as a nectarine. It’s a shame Don Rickles isn’t around. There’s a guy who could have taught the Cheeto-in-Chief a thing or two about how to deliver a telling verbal blow and roll with the incoming punch. In one of his early-morning Tweets from the Throne, Trump foolishly decided to take on Kim Jong-un, gratuitously referring to North Korea’s enigmatic despot as “Little Rocket Man”. Kim’s propagandists cleverly responded by calling Trump an “old dotard”, which sent American scribes and All the President’s Men scrambling for their dictionaries.

Characteristically, Trump heard only the littlest word, and basically replied, “Oh yeah? Maybe I’m old (fact), but you’re short and fat.” Not the most mature way two powerful dudes who both have nuclear weapons and short fuses should speak to one another. Alas, we no longer have such superb insult-hurlers as Sir Winston Churchill. He once referred to an opponent as a man with “the gift of compressing the largest amount of words into the smallest amount of thought.” Now, that’s class. World class. Our resident Geezer lives southeast of Whitehorse.

here is a new exhibition showing at The ODD Gallery in Dawson City, a gallery that showcases contemporary art year round. Pathie is a new, videobased installation by Montreal artist Andrée-Anne Roussel. The exhibit opened Wednesday, January 17th, with an artist’s talk at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) ballroom, followed by a reception in the gallery itself. The exhibit runs until February 24. Roussel is both a filmmaker and an artist in digital arts. She has a bachelor’s degree in cinematography and a master’s degree in experimental media research and creativity from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her work has been showcased around the world, including at the Sapporo International Short Film Festival in Japan, the London Analogue Festival in the United Kingdom and at the Analogica Festival held in the Southern Tyrolean Mountains in Italy. Roussel works primarily with the medium of video. Her projects are in the form of interactive installations and sensory films, with themes of ambiguity, failure, fragility and empathy. Most of her projects take place in a time parallel to ours, but at a slower pace. For example, her work La Femme dans la chambre (The Woman in the Room), a project she showcased at the Mu-

see d’art de Joliette in 2015, is a video, projected on a wide screen, of a woman sitting on a bed. Visitors sit in the dark in a comfortable armchair placed in front of the screen while the woman appears on the screen engaging the viewer in a one way tête-à-tête. Roussel features this type of one-way interaction often in her work. Her characters slowly wander in alternate universes, carrying out daily tasks in a studied manner, because, according to Roussel, this displays an important act of resistance to what she feels is an invasion of our private lives by the capitalist system. In her artist’s statement on her website, she is quoted as saying, “We are called to become active consumers 24/7. The boundaries between the private and the public, work and leisure, in short all spheres of our lives, are going to disappear, giving us the feeling of ubiquity. Through these contemplative characters (that I create) and their relationship to their environment, I approach several

notions such as the economy of attention, non-communication, intimacy, failure, the representation of the woman, the absurd and ambiguity.” As well as continuing her work in digital art this year, Roussel will also be joining the residency programme at La Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at LABoral – Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijon, Spain. ODD Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 noon to 5 p.m. For more information visit www. KIAC.ca.

Moose round steak

It never lets you down

T

enderloin and backstraps (striploin) get all the hype regarding being the most tender cuts off any wild game animal. They have a good reputation as they usually are tender unless they aren’t cooked properly – which is very often as many people insist on cooking wild game just like they would cook beef. For many households, anything other than tenderloins and backstraps ends up relegated to the stew, burger, sausage and slow-cooker categories. Round steak is one of those cuts that is often undervalued. There are three rounds: top round, eye of round and inside round. These are all very choice cuts, if cut and prepared properly. The grain is obvious and cutting across the grain for roasts or steaks will give the most tenderness available. Now, because these aren’t tenderloin pieces, we understand from the start that prepared improperly, these cuts may only be tender if we take some steps to make that happen. First step is to marinate everything in this category. Roasts need to be injected with marinade unless they are going in the slow-cooker. Marinade injectors and marinade kits are available locally in sporting goods/outdoor stores. Marinade information is avail-

able by the ton on the internet. Simple marinades are as easy as any of the salad dressings you enjoy. Zesty Italian and sundried tomato with oregano are two good choices. Steaks can be in a marinade for many days in a large Ziploc bag. Just remember when you open the fridge to get something, to knead the bag with the steaks and marin-

in the marinade. A really simple – but always successful – soak is olive oil with crushed garlic. The garlic can be hand crushed fresh, or just from the variety sold crushed in jars in the grocery stores. Just remember to knead the Ziploc each time you open the fridge. Stir fry meat and shish kabob chunks can be cut to size and Ziplocked five to six days before the dinner and will be ready for instant cooking or sliding onto skewers after soaking and kneading for three to six days. All wild meat is lean and prone to being tough if cooked too long, as it dries out. Domestic beef has been bred to have fat marbled through the meat. Wild meat is very lean and any fat is located between the muscle groups and is definitely not marbled through PHOTO: Pixabay the muscle. As a result, wild meat will dry out quickly, becoming very chewy. Strange things won from the midnight sun

Strange Things Done by Elle Wild

I

n keeping with this column’s focus on Yukon related material, I’m returning this week to a successful thriller that is set in a version of Dawson City. It’s not quite my town in both geography and details, but Elle Wild didn’t try to pretend it was when I talked with her about it, and even put a map of her fictional version on her website so people could see the difference. Strange Things Done is a murder mystery published by Dundurn

tent, a bit of a “cozy” mystery with an exotic locale and an intriguing puzzle, and it started winning awards before it was officially published, picking up the 2015 Unhanged Arthur Ellis Award for Best Unpublished First Crime Novel. Arthur Ellis was the name used by the official hangman in Ontario. Not his real name, just the one that the various occupants of the role traveled under to remain incognito. It’s the Canadian version of the American Edgar (after Poe) or the British Agatha (after Christie). The publisher’s notes describe Strange Things Done as “A dark

and suspenseful noir thriller”, and it does have noir-ish overtones. Before it won that Ellis award, it had already racked up some other nominations or wins: • 2014 Telegraph/Harvill Secker Crime Competition — Shortlisted • 2014 Southwest Writers Annual Novel Writing Contest — Silver Winner • 2014 Criminal Lines Crime-Writing Competition — Shortlisted • 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Longlisted This year, it scored another Ellis award, this time with the 2017 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. In addition, it won the 2017

Women in Film “From Our Dark Side” Contest. You can read more about Elle Wild and see a video teaser for the book at her website: StrangeThingsDone.ca. I recommend it. Strange Things Done is available through the Yukon Public Libraries system. It is also for sale at Mac’s Fireweed Books on Main Street in Whitehorse, as well as online and in ebook form. Dan Davidson has been writing about books for Yukon publications since 1977. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

Press. A somewhat disgraced journalist from Outside arrives to take up a post at the Dawson Daily, a local paper run by a guy who is a teacher at the local school. This was a shock when I read it, seeing as that was pretty much me from 1989 to 2008, until I retired from teaching, but we’d never met when she was here in 2004, so it was a coincidence. An even greater coincidence was that her investigating RCMP officer bore the moniker of Johnny Caribou, which is the actual nom de guerre of one of our long time locals. She swears she never met him and had no idea. Newly arrived, Jo Silver investigates the mysterious death of a local politician on the river, from a fall that could not actually take place as described, but I’ll forgive that. Mysteries multiply and the body count rises. Winter sets in; the airport shuts down and the highway is closed. These things don’t actually happen, either, but having them in the book does ramp up the tension. Silver is that staple of noir mysteries: a failed reporter full of self doubt and a number of character flaws. She means well, but has trouble getting past her own inadequacies. Anyway, this is, to some ex-

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

My fishing buddy, the Chairman of the Board

W

hen one walks along the rim of the autumn of one’s life, they can’t help but to look back to the yesterdays – the “good old days.” At the same time one questions if the “tomorrows” will also be filled with equal memories, when they too become the yesterdays. I suggest everyone should take time to reflect, and never lose grip of the yesterdays. Sitting here in front of my campfire on the northern shores of Georgian Bay, I grasp at memories of yesterdays. They are pleasing, rich in stories and friendships. There is a contentment and a peace of mind, but then there are also reflections of sadness, for this is opening day of the bass season and truly I miss my old fishing buddy Bob Ovell, the “Chairman of the Board.” Oh I guess I have fished with better fishermen than the Chairman of the Board, such as my friend Dan Thomey, the former publisher of the Ontario Outdoor Magazine. There was also Ab Hutchinson of Orillia, Ontario, who could out cast the best of fishermen. And last, but not least, are my sons Dave, Kevin and Kim, who I played every trick in the book to beat them, in this disease called “fishing.” Some, no doubt would claim that they were brought up on more fishing rods and lures than baby bottles. The Chairman of the Board was quite different from them all, as those who knew Bob will attest to. When Bob was secretary of the Orillia Fish and Game Club, as well as my secretary of Zone 5 of the Ontario Fish and Game Federation, he was addressed as “The Chairman of the Board.” This stuck with him – at official functions and on fishing and camping trips. It always seems that in the long run, be it official, or who

would pour the 8 and 18, you had to answer to the Chairman of the Board. I have to admit, the Chairman of the Board was a wise man, as it was he who introduced me to that fine whisky 8 and 18. A fine alcoholic drink found only here in Canada. Our local group of friends all had travel trailers, and enjoyed the outdoors. As well, we all belonged to a square dancing group. Bob and I had other things in common, such as the inner contents of my oversized tackle box. The Chairman of the Board ingeniously convinced our wives that we should go on weekend camping trips at some parks that had areas for dancing – and he would push for campgrounds near small communities that had “want not stores” to attract the ladies to go shopping. By some mystic means the selected park also just happened to produce some fantastic bass fishing waters. Now, you just have to give the devil his due: the Chairman of the Board was a very wise man for picking such great places to go – shall we say – square dancing. I can remember only too well one outing at Butterfly Lake, just a couple loud whistles and a holler south of Lake St. Joseph in Muskoka’s Lake Region of Ontario. We had just returned from an early morning’s bass fishing outing and I walked over to my trailer, poured myself a cup of tea, grabbed a couple cookies and put them on the table just outside of the trailer. I went in the trailer to get my fishing magazine, but when I came back outside to drink my tea, the Chairman of the Board was drinking my tea and helping himself to my homemade cookies. He casually looked up at me and said, “It’s almost high noon. Going to pour us a couple of 8 and 18?”

PHOTO: Pixaby

The Chairman of the Board had a lot in common with Murray including their favourite whiskey and the contents of Murray’s tackle box It sounded more like an instructional statement than a question and from past experiences, I knew I might as well forget about my tea and cookies and pour those fine drinks as the Chairman had, shall I say, suggested. I poured the drinks and started back to the park table. The Chairman of the Board was telling the ladies, and others, who had gathered around to listen to his tales, of how he limited out on the bass and lowly Murray only caught a couple, hardly acceptable, small fish. He explained that I was not using the right lures and his were far superior to mine. Hell yes, his lures were better than mine, as the ones he was using he stole out of my tackle box the night before. Now the word “stolen” the Chairman of the Board would contest, saying that I had left my tackle box open and explaining that determining the best lures would be for him to decide.

“Pretty damn sure of your facts, are you Murray?” the Chairman blurted. “Well, I will just have to see for myself.” He then reached into my tackle box (of no less than 500 lures) and took what I had said to be the best bass lures and put them in his own tackle box, of

Tell us about wine Tell us about beer Tell us about yourself

which many other lures in his box looked very similar to what I once had owned. Murray Martin is a former Ontario Conservation Officer and a long standing member of The Outdoor Writers of Canada.

Stepping Up with Darrell Hookey

Sharing a love for film

Jessica Hall wants to meet you

T

here are meetings. There is paperwork. There are grants to apply for and cheques to sign. But, for Jessica Hall, being the president of the Yukon Film Society is all about… people. “The thing I really like about being on the board is my fellow board members and the staff,” she said. “They are all amazing people. “We are 50 per cent production people – those who create kinetic art – yet we come from different backgrounds. “So, I am exposed to the opinions of people who don’t run in my circle normally.” Then there are members of the society who do not have a background in film production or its industry. Hall says they have an honest opinion of film based strictly on the storytelling. “They are just great people,” she said. “They are kind, compassionate and passionate about film; so, it is like having a built-in audience meter as they watch a lot of films and have their own perspective, that is different from people who work in film.” That is a lot of opinions on an art form that permeates society in so many ways: from art house films to YouTube; from Hollywood blockbusters to television commercials; and from schlocky cult favourites to documentaries. As the film society’s president, Hall challenges herself to hear and respect every voice. Her own passions for film began with her parents who had a large collection of VHS tapes. “When I was in junior high, my best friend’s dad was an early adopter of technology, so he always had the latest things like a camera and a really crazy audio setup where we could play a record and CD, or a record and tape, and then record it down to another tape.

Jessica Hall is the president of the Yukon Film Society, an organization that allows her and all of the members to enjoy film even more just by sharing their different experiences “With a camcorder and a monitor with an RCA Out and a couple of VCRs, we could make videos. “We did that for fun… what connectors go where and, well, we just figured it out.” She ended up in Simon Fraser University’s film and communications programs. “The focus was independent

cinema and it was about learning the craft and telling a story,” Hall said. “It wasn’t about working in Hollywood, it was more on the arts side of filmmaking. “That was good for me as it makes you think more about the process and what filmmakers are saying with their work and cele-

brating film.” Today, Hall is a freelance editor and freelance video producer who works on industrial and promotional videos or works on other people’s projects. She has worked in the industry as a production coordinator and worked in casting for television shows and movies.

Joining the Yukon Film Society in 2000 was a way to get involved in filmmaking and make connections. Today, the society gives her a chance to meet people she would not normally meet. “I think it is important for everyone to to get out of their comfort zone and meet people,” Hall said. “Everyone has a different reason for being there.” But, from Feb. 3 to 11, they all do have a common opportunity to enjoy films. It is the annual Available Light Film Festival. Planning takes all year, but it kicks into high gear in the fall. Then there is programming throughout the year that includes a monthly Available Lights Cinema at the Yukon Arts Centre and a new screening series called Cult/ Occult that focuses on “retrocinema, weird cinema, old Hollywood”. And there are monthly residencies at the Jenni House in Shipyard’s Park and production workshops and equipment rental. Hall’s board has a staff of four that handles most of the details. But the board ensures the mandate is adhered to and looks at the bigger picture. “We are a consensus board, so my vote is just as important as everyone else’s,” she said. “The role of president isn’t some kind of dictatorship because that is not healthy.” Hall says her two-year stint as president expires at the AGM this spring/summer and she is excited to see someone else bring a different perspective to the role. Details on all of the upcoming events are available at www. YukonFilmSociety.com. Stepping Up features those who lead volunteer organizations in the Yukon. Darrell Hookey is a freelance writer in Whitehorse.

The Rendezvous event called Her Majesty’s Royal Feast is an elegant evening with a 5-course meal on Feb. 13 at the KDCC

n its second year, Her Majesty’s Royal Feast was created to give the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Queen candidates a high class venue to deliver one of the most important components of the competition: their speeches. On their journey in the Quest for the Crown competition, the Queen candidates go through

many contests in hopes to be crowned Queen. “This event is important to the competition because it provides the high class, professional, elegant event that we wanted so that our candidate speeches could be properly highlighted,” said Queen Mom Marjie Klein. The Queen Mom manages the event

and the queens. The formal, black tie event is open to the public and allows the candidates’ family and friends to come and support them. Live classical music will be played throughout the evening by My Fabulous String Quartet, who also played last year. “Their music provided an extra feel of class to the atmosphere,” said Heather Anderson, who is on the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous board of directors. The current Rendezvous Queen and her Court play host to this event and share the MC duties

throughout the night. “[Last year] the evening was amazing. It ran flawlessly, the food was impeccable and the candidates shone brightly as the lights on the stage, as they each fearlessly delivered their timed speeches,” Klein said. “I was a very proud Queen Mom that night.” The event has a unique focus on the 1898 etiquette and touches on some of the more “quirky” rules of those days. Some examples include eating your soup and keeping up your appearance. Soup is always served for the first course and should be eaten with dessert spoons. Servings are taken from the sides, not the tips of the spoon and without any sounds of the lips. The must not be sucked into the mouth audibly from the ends of the

Vanilla Bourbon Rice Pudding

T

here’s a special place in my heart for mush. And puddings of all sorts are a very favourite form of mush.

This is simple rice pudding – seasoned with vanilla and bourbon, and not on the overly sweet side. It makes for a great make-ahead dessert that you and your family can enjoy during a work week. Although some people love that funny pudding film that forms on the top when you put it in the fridge, I do not. So I always make sure the plastic wrap touches the pudding when it goes in to chill. But you do you. Serves 6

he Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Quest for the Crown competition features opportunities for us to dress in gold rush era finery and spend a civilized afternoon visiting with the women hoping to be Queen: the Queen’s Tea and Social and the Queen’s Luncheon. The Queen’s Tea and Social is presented by Westmark Whitehorse and is an afternoon of traditional tea, sandwiches and delicious desserts in the company of Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Queen contestants on Feb. 18. The afternoon is a fun-filled family affair. “Keeping with the style of a high tea afternoon, we will have classical music for the afternoon,” said Heather Anderson, director of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. “For the entertainment, we like to provide a short intermission during the event, and promote

some of the local dance artists in the community.” This year the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Air North Can Can dancers perform will perform at the Queen’s Tea and Social and the Queen’s Luncheon. Each Queen candidate will be introduced and join the 2018 Mr. Yukon for a walk through the room to give all the guests an opportunity to see them in their tea dresses. The young Rendezvous Princes and Princesses who were crowned on Canada Day will be attending the Queen’s Tea and Social this year to host their own Kids’ Tea Time. “(The Queen’s Tea and Social) has grown over the last few years, and continues to grow, as do all of the Quest for the Crown events,” Anderson said. “This is one of the more popular events, and has sold cont’d on page 15 ...

out the last two years. The support the community shows for the Queen candidates is amazing.” During the event, Rendezvous has prizes for the Best Dressed Lady and Gentleman, and Young Lady and Young Gentleman. Guests and candidates are also encouraged to get creative and design their very own Tea Hat for the afternoon, with a prize being handed out to the Best Hat of the afternoon. “Also, don’t forget to pick up a 2018 Quest for the Crown Teacup, each year we are excited to present a new pattern for people to add to their collection,” Anderson said. The Queen’s Luncheon presented by Yukon College is another event for the Quest for the Crown competition. The evening will have special guests. “Last year we had the Commissioner of Yukon, Gillian Campbell and a few Yukon elders,” said Marjie Klein, who volunteers as “Queen Mom”. This is a great opportunity for

the Yukon College Culinary Arts Program students to show off their talents by preparing the meal for attendees. And, it will be a judged event. “At this event we have some fun with the candidates by asking them impromptu questions without giving them time to prepare an answer; to see how they handle questions on the spot,” Anderson said. “We ask the audience to provide questions, too. This is a fun and interactive event.” The Queen’s Tea and Social will be held Sunday, February 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westmark Whitehorse Ballroom. The Queen’s Luncheon will be held Thursday, February 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Yukon College Cafeteria.

Richard’s Tire Tips

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition. Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

he Chinese New Year is the celebration of the Lunar New Year and considered the beginning of spring. Due to the Chinese calendar’s reliance on the lunisolar cycle, which is based on the exact astronomical observations of the sun’s longitude and the Moon’s phases, the new year is a floating date and usually occurs between mid-January and mid-February. This year, Chinese New Year falls on Friday, February 16. The years are broken into the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac and the coming year will be the Year of the Dog. As the president of the Chinese Canadian Association of Yukon, Charmaine Cheung is one of nine board members who are responsible for organizing their events in the Yukon, the largest being the annual dinner to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Chinese Canadian Association was officially established in 2012 and this is their fifth annual celebration at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. The first celebration was held at the Mt. McIntyre Recreation Centre. The large dinner event is an

important part of the celebration. “We have traditional Chinese 10-course meal catered by the Green Garden,” Cheung said. “Last year was a buffet, but this year we are doing a sit down meal. That’s why we have about 30 volunteers this year. Many are helping with serving.” The dinner evening is also highlighted by several traditional Chinese performances. The event begins at 5 p.m. with a 45 to 60 minute cultural performance. This year the association has brought a Chinese opera from Toronto to perform. “Opera in China has been around for many years and is a very serious art form, just like in Western culture,” Cheung said. “Having opera at Chinese New Year is a very traditional performance.” The evening’s performances will also include a lion dance. This dance is an example of the traditional Chinese costumes people often envision with one or two people holding up the costume heads above their bodies. The lion dance is performed by volunteers who spend time preparing

each year. An annual tradition for the Yukon group is to choose a cultural dance to perform each year that highlights China’s many different ethnic groups. “China has 56 ethnic groups,” Cheung explained. “Each year, a member chooses one to perform. This year we’ve chosen Mongolian. They research the costumes and music and then partner with the Northern Lights School of Dance, who choreographs the performance. “Northern Lights will have some of their dancers perform because they are better trained to do it, but some children of association members will join to learn the dance each year.” And Yukon singer Fawn Fritzen performs at the event as well. Cheung noted that Fritzen’s mother is of Taiwanese descent and Fritzen sings Chinese songs for the celebration. While the Chinese New Year celebration is the largest event held each year by the association, they hold several other events throughout the year. They hold a number of internal activities that are only for their members, like

the Moon Festival that happens in the fall. They have become involved in the City of Whitehorse community cleanup in May and have also organized to participate in the Canada Day parade on July 1. This past July they had a dragon and drum team enter into the parade. The association is a mix of Yukon residents from many Chinese backgrounds and there have been some changes over the years of who is coming to the Yukon. “Originally, 20 years ago and more, the Chinese moving here were mostly from southern China,” Cheung explained. “They spoke Cantonese and would often be interested in opening businesses, like restaurants or hotels. “Now, in the last 10 years, it’s switched to all over in mainland China and they mostly speak Mandarin. They are choosing different jobs, like professional or retail. The Chinese community is now quite diverse for language.” Cheung is an example of one of the more recent arrivals and is originally from Shanghai. She has been here since 2007 and works for the Yukon government.

While the association has just recently become an official group, Cheung notes that there has always been a desire to share Chinese culture. “Prior to 2012, there was an informal group of Chinese who organized events,” she said. “But the wish has always been to have a formal group to promote and share Chinese culture.” The Chinese New Year is the largest celebration of the year for the organization and will help achieve that goal of sharing Chinese culture. Individuals interested in finding out more information about the Chinese New Year celebration or the Chinese Canadian Association of Yukon can find them on their Facebook page or email them at YukonChineseAssociation@gmail. com.

oot reflexology is an accessible touch therapy where a practitioner uses both light touch and deeper pressure techniques to stimulate points or reflex zones of the foot and lower limb. Reflexologists from all influences base their practice on the belief that our feet and lower limbs contain reflex points that share – or mirror – a representation of the body structure, and that the flow of information between the reflex point and body structure flows both ways -it is bidirectional. This means, for example, that by stimulating a reflex point on the foot that corresponds to a body part, allows the body to generate its own healing response for that body part. Foot therapies have different histories from Egyptian, Chinese,

Indigenous, and more recently European backgrounds and differing persuasions including deep pressure, light pressure, using rod instruments or stones, following a prescribed generic foot map, anatomical foot, or prenatal foot map. Evidence of this has been recorded in the work of ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and North American First Nation artists. Dr. Jesus Manzanares, a medical doctor based in Spain and recognized as an authority on reflexology, has been conducting research committed to applying a scientific lens to capture what occurs in the nervous system during a reflexology session. In his 2017 book, Dr. Manzanares defines foot reflexology as “a reflex technique based on the neurobiochemical action that occurs when a foot reflex point is

For others, reflexology is more of an art than a science. For me, reflexology is wholistic – meaning both an art and a science, and pertaining to the whole person. It provides a nourishing moment during a hectic life that assists the body to create its own rejuvenating response. Reflexology neither diagnoses nor treats. Rather, the relaxation response that helps take the edge off stress permits the nervous system to relax. When receiving

a reflexology session, the body’s nervous system has an opportunity to balance its own self, which in turn, permits one’s own innate healing ability. Reflexology recognizes the body’s ability to heal as a normal part of structure, and thereby everyone has the capacity to create their own “inner healing” - a concept put forward by British naturopath and reflexologist Robert St. John in the 1950s. Reflexology is a catalyst for preventative and restorative health in three ways. First, reflexology and foot massage bring about a relaxation response – think a long, lovely “ahhh.” Second, the intentional, focused stimulation of the foot and lower limb reflexes promotes the receivers own innate ability to heal – think capacity to self heal. And third, reflexology enhan-

ces circulation by facilitating the movement of excess fluid that can settle in tissues of the lower legs and feet. Together these responses promote lower limb health which is the root of full body health. Reflexologist Gaston Saint Pierre, building on the work of Robert St. John, sums up reflexology as a tool to spark the life force within each one that can transform us.
