Birds are all over the news these days. There was that rare Hawfinch from Asia that landed in Haines Junction. And that blue, blue Steller’s Jay invasion that happened last fall. For these rarities and Yukon’s 40 resident species, the challenge is now to stay warm and keep eating!

They come into our yards and feeders and we can view and study them,” says Cameron Eckert, expert birder and biologist. Resident birds eat local yearround, like forest cone seeds. Warblers on the other hand, need summer bugs so they migrate south. “Diversity isn’t as high now, but it’s a chance to get closer that makes winter special,” Eckert says. When temperatures fall, feeders with black-oil sunﬂower seeds will attract forest birds such as chatty black-capped chickadees, common redpolls, bright pine grosbeaks and red crossbills. Venture further to ﬁnd other birds. Dress warmly, and take a pair of binoculars and a guidebook . A Yukon Bird Checklist will help identify them. to Yukon Birds, published by the Yukon government’s wildlife viewing program, and the Merlin Bird ID App. The Millennium Trail is one of the best winter spots in the Yukon for birding (and my favourite year-round). You’re almost sure to see American dippers near the open water below the Rotary Centennial Bridge (the blue bridge). This dark grey chubby songbird packs a loud call and an even more beautiful song. In mid-winter, they seem happy to jump in and out of the river’s current from icy or rocky perches. “It’s one of the premier species to see here in winter,” Eckert says. Common mergansers, a diving duck, also like ﬁshing here. The American robin has become a frequent winter visitor, too, ﬁnding food in the muddy shoreline. Robins may be part of a vanguard of changing populations testing to see if they can make it through our warming winters, noted Eckert. Most don’t survive cont’d on page 3 ...

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

Looking back (way back) S

itting back in my easy chair, I questioned myself as to what period of time I would have liked to have studied. I think it would be the Cretaceous period, back some 145 to 65 million years ago, when my pal Tyrannosaurus Rex would have roamed the countryside, eating up everything that came within reach. The T Rex had the most powerful bite of any species of his time (with a bite force of 8,000 pounds compared to the 200-pound bite force of a human), a record that stands today. My interest in ancient archaeology happened when I turned 62. True, it was a little late in life to go back to life studies, but I was digging in my garden back in north central Ontario when I came upon some old bone structure. It measured around 50 feet in length. It made the front page of The Packet and Times. I still have the pictures of geologists at the Royal Canadian Museum in Toronto. They said it was the fossil bone of a Shonisaurus, the early resemblance of a giant dolphin. This dated the fossil at some 250 million years ago, in the Permian Period, well before the T Rex. Ever since, I’ve carried a special axe in the truck. I’m always breaking stone to see what we may ﬁnd next. The Cretaceous was also an interesting time for the geographic history of the Yukon and surrounding territories. This was the time when a huge waterway wound from the Arctic down through to the Gulf of Mexico. Along the shores were giant trees and tall grasses. One notable thing about the creatures of this period is that they had exceptionally large heads and jaws. They were considered to be basically meat eaters. Not only were the land creatures giants; those in the water were as well. Elasmosaurus had a large body and a neck measuring 23 feet long. It was not the largest creatures

of the Cretaceous period that fascinated me, but the very opposite in size. In the late 1950s and early 60s, I had the good fortune of working with bats when rabies crossed Canada. I studied every-

That’s when I found out that the smallest of all dinosaurs was only 28 inches in length. This was the Microraptor of the early Cretaceous period. It was not actually a birdlike creature, but more of a glider, similar to the flying squirrel of modern times. The most interesting winged creature of prehistoric times is the Pterosaurs, which existed about 200 million years ago. Having a fair knowledge of the modern little brown bat, I quickly connected the membrane wings with the modern bat. Its feet and tail also recall our modern bat. This flying reptile, with its wing span of more than 30 feet, was a very capable flyer, but, like other creatures of that era, was subject to the greatest extinction on planet Earth. This took place some 65 million years ago. The dinosaurs of Alberta and Saskatchewan are said to have become extinct in about two minutes, when a large meteorite crossed horizontally close to the Earth, with extreme incandescent heat, crashing into the Gulf of Mexico. It seems odd that we humans have been as destructive as we have to the environment, given the short period we’ve been here. So I will leave you with this to ponder: Everything on Earth is unique. Once gone, it is gone forever. It is part of what is called the “genetic pool,” the greatest reservoir of life on Earth Evolution and unknown combinations and mutations of genes within that reservoir will produce forms of life in ages to come that are not known in these times. As responsible passengers on this spaceship Earth, we would be foolish to wipe out any of our shipmates. They will, at least, make our voyage less lonely, as we slowly drift through the endless reaches of space. They will make us wiser and better as well.

Grey Matters with Deborah McNevin

Of time and tech I

have to admit that I’m a nerd, geek, tech junkie, whatever the terminology is for a person who tries out the latest gadgets. I thought that as I aged, and if my eyesight couldn’t be ﬁxed by cataract surgery, it would be good to be able to do more things by voice and by ear. I also thought I might as well anticipate whatever form telehealth may take in the future. I decided to embrace wireless speaker technology. I currently have a Google speaker in my living room, a Google nest hub in my kitchen, and two Google minis upstairs (note: I do pay a lot of attention to my privacy and security settings, but keep in mind there is always a trade-off to some extent). I use these devices daily. I have routines set up for the morning. Google tells me about my calendar, the weather, and then streams local CBC radio. I can tell Google to add things to my shopping list wherever I am and whenever my vagrant memory returns, even if only for a moment. Google speakers can set a multitude of timers when I’m cooking. The nest hub can even tell me what the timer is for, with different chimes for things like cookies or roasts. It can read me

recipes step-by-step, although I don’t use that feature often. I do ask it to convert measurements if I’m altering a recipe on the ﬂy, say from four servings to six, or if I want to use a slow cooker instead of the oven. Google can turn on my TV and turn on one of my lights in the living room. It can yell at my husband that dinner’s ready to save me from wasting my breath and my voice. I read the local newspapers in hard copy (including What’s Up Yukon) and, instead of having to open my calendar and write down dates, I can tell Google to add events to my calendar, or remind me when to check for tickets. It goes on and on. It can remember things for me, like the last episode of a Netﬂix series that we are watching on different nights. A great feature when my routine gets upset or changed is that Goo-

gle reminds me when to take my medicines. As we live through the brain-fog of the pandemic, this feature has been highly useful. I will admit I’m pondering how to use my system so I can tell Google what I want in the basement in-

stead of standing in the middle of the room going “what did I want down here again?” So, you may ask, what can’t Google do? It simply cannot tell me the correct time. It started when the Yukon didn’t change its clocks in the fall. For almost a month, my system was in chaos. My calendar didn’t

work; my reminders didn’t work; the routines I set up didn’t work. Everything was a mess. Evidently the government had not informed Google (not sure about Amazon and Alexa systems) about its unilateral decision. I spent hours on the phone and sending emails to government reps and Google techs. It took more than a month for my calendar to start working properly again. I could ﬁnally verbally add events again and rely on the system to give me notice for the few appointments or PHOTO: Pixabay meetings or engagements that I have these days. It took almost daily feedback to the device over several months before my nest hub would display the correct time. But…I still can’t use any timed routines as the system thinks it is still on Paciﬁc time. Solutions suggested by the techies included ridiculous ideas such as changing my home address

to somewhere in Alberta, which would make my news and weather completely useless. I can live without this entire system, for sure. I still keep a paper bullet journal with my todo’s and my appointments. As I get older, I ﬁnd the more aidememoirs I have, the more likely I can remember essential things so I intend to keep this practice as long as I can. But if you ever want a giggle and don’t want Google to tell you one of its lame jokes, simply do the following: Ask Google what time it is in Whitehorse, Yukon, then ask Google what time it is. And laugh, or sigh, at the inability or unwillingness of a mighty corporation (a tech tyrant?) to ﬁx the simplest things for a little jurisdiction like ours. I’m dreading the spring time change on March 14. Hopefully someone in government will think about this issue and get Google to act in advance. After all, time and tech wait for no one. Cocktails with Latitude with Jennifer Tyldesley

Bloody good cocktails! I

t’s February and we are in citrus season. Being that we can’t travel to a warm climate where oranges and lemons grow, it seems ﬁtting to pay tribute to those lovely ﬂavours now, during one of the coldest months. Here are a few of my favourite blood orange creations!

Now is the season for that lovely fruit, and I encourage you to try blood oranges, if you haven’t done so already. If you can’t ﬁnd blood oranges (or if you wish to make these drinks when they aren’t in season) you may substitute with regular navel oranges, but you will lose some ﬂavour and colour. Warning: it does take some effort to juice these, so you will need to buy a bag of blood oranges!

Blood Orange Mimosa

Ingredients • 3 oz dry sparkling wine or Prosecco • 3 oz freshly squeezed blood orange juice • 1/2 oz Grand Marnier (optional) • 6 drops FPJ orange bitters, or highbush cranberry & grapefruit bitters • Several highbush cranberries or orange twist Instructions Chill all ingredients. Slowly add wine, juice, liqueur, and bitters to a champagne ﬂute. Stir gently to mix, and garnish as desired. *Note: If a slightly less boozy cocktail is desired, you can aim for about 2/3 juice to 1/3 sparkling wine and omit the Grand Marnier.

3/4 tsp Yukon birch syrup 1/2 oz egg white 4 drops FPJ Orange Bitters Blood orange wheel

Instructions Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with no ice. Shake hard to emulsify the egg white. Add ice to the shaker and shake again to chill. Double strain into an old-fashioned glass with fresh ice, if desired. Garnish with a blood orange wheel. If blood oranges are not in season, you may substitute lemon juice for the blood orange juice, and garnish the cocktail with a preserved cherry (or three)!

All fired up about cooking with coffee

n a cold afternoon in February I went to visit a coffee roaster, by invitation. He lives with his family in the forest at the edge of a subdivision and makes his coffee there, in a small slatted building he calls the sugar shack. His name is Mike Russo and, with his wife, Sarah Russo, he’s proprietor of Firebean Coffee Roasters. In that capacity, he’s the maker of my favourite coffee, Firebean Inferno. Don’t get me wrong, in my house we patronize all the local coffee roasters and we have a roast from each of them in our cupboards right now, from Bean North Coffee Roaster Co., to Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters, to Atlin Mountain Coffee Roasters. We drink them all with pleasure, but I am a fan of the dark brews and there is something about deep, dark, Firebean Inferno that speaks to my soul. Russo’s operation is a simple one developed through trial and error and with help from his friends and a “metal guy” in town. His roaster is a modiﬁed pizza oven. His source of heat is kindling. His drum is powered by a small motor under the oven.

Coffee and game complement each other beautifully His cooling racks are a couple of sheet pans on kitchen shelving outside the shack, underneath the spruce trees. He winnows the chaff from the roasted beans by pouring them from a bucket held high. The chaff flies up to meet the snowflakes coming down. Russo roasts in small batches two or three times a week for five hours at a time and it’s busy. There’s no time for wasted motion. He moves quickly from roaster to woodpile to cooling station. “This is the fun part, being outside, being in the forest,” he says as the drum in his roaster rotates. “I want the metal on the bean, I don’t want air.” He says conduction heat leaves more life in the bean. It takes 25 minutes to roast a batch of Inferno. After 15 minutes, you can hear the crackling of the beans above the crackling of the kindling fire and watch chaff spit out from the drum. At 20 minutes, the blue smoke rolls up and gets thicker as the clock

ticks on. At 25 minutes, Russo opens the drum and lets the beans pour into a metal bucket he’s arranged on the fire. Then you get out of the way as he runs with the bucket to the cooling station and pours out the still crackling beans. Ravens croak overhead, passing a stick between beaks. The Inferno is done. I came home from this visit smelling like coffee. All fired up, I began to cook. In these recipes you may use any roast you like— the effect will be different with each one--but be sure to use a fine grind. The coarser stuff can be unpleasantly gritty. COFFEE RUB FOR MOOSE, BISON OR BEEF STEAK Many recipes for coffee rubs call for several ingredients— cumin, coriander, ginger, tons of hot smoked paprika—but I prefer a simpler blend, so you can taste both the coffee and the meat. Coffee and game complement

each other beautifully. Ingredients • 2 tbsp finely ground darkroast coffee • 1 tbsp kosher salt • 1 tbsp brown sugar • 1/2 tsp hot smoked paprika Instructions 1. Whisk ingredients together in a small bowl. Press a generous amount of rub firmly into each steak or steaks on all sides. Wrap tightly and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. 2. Saute steaks in sizzling olive oil and butter in a cast iron frying pan over medium-high heat. *Rough guide: For rare moose steak, cook a 1-inch thick steak for a scant 2 minutes on each side, and allow to rest for five minutes before slicing. 3. Makes 1/4 cup rub, enough for about 2 lbs steak.

Tiramisu, the classic Italian dessert of lady fingers dipped in coffee and Marsala, a fortified wine, then smothered in Mascarpone cheese or zabaglione and whipping cream, is the most forgiving of dishes WING-IT TIRAMISU Tiramisu, the classic Italian dessert of lady fingers dipped in coffee and Marsala, a fortified wine, then smothered in Mascarpone cheese or zabaglione and whipping cream, is the most forgiving of dishes. The liquor store was out of Marsala and the food store was out of Mascarpone, so I winged it with what I had on hand: Pineau des Charentes (a fortified wine from western France), graham wafers, and cream cheese and ricotta instead of Mascarpone. Purists may scoff, but this tiramisu won five stars chez moi. Ingredients • 1 cup 35% cream • 8 oz Mascarpone cheese (or 4 oz cream cheese combined with 4 oz ricotta and 2 tbsp 35% cream) • 1 tbsp of fortified wine (Marsala, sherry, or Pineau des Charentes) or liqueur (try Amaretto, Kahlua, or Drambuie)

1/2 cup sugar 3/4 cup cold strong coffee 1 tbsp fortiﬁed wine or liqueur 27 graham crackers (about one sleeve) • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • 1 tbsp ﬁnely ground coffee Instructions 1. In a medium bowl, whip 35% cream until stiff peaks form. Place cream cheese, ricotta, 2 Tbsp 35% cream and sugar in a food processor. Process until smooth and transfer to a bowl (If you are using mascarpone, whisk cheese and sugar together). 2. Fold a few spoonfuls of whipped cream into the cheese to loosen it up a bit, followed by the remainder of the whipped cream and 1 tbsp alcohol of your choice. Reserve. 3. Have ready an 8 x 8-inch baking dish. Combine cold coffee and 1 tbsp alcohol in a small bowl. One by one, dip graham crackers into the coffee for

about 2 seconds and arrange in three rows of three in the baking dish. Spread one-third of the whipping cream/cheese mixture over top of the graham crackers. Repeat until you have three layers of crackers covered with whipping cream/ cheese. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 3 hours and up to 24. When ready to serve, combine ground coffee and cocoa in a small bowl and sieve evenly over top of the tiramisu. Cut into squares, plate and serve. Makes 8 servings.

Yukon fiddling legend Joe Loutchan passed away earlier this month. He was 82

eloved Yukon “Fiddler on the Loose” Joe Loutchan passed away on Feb. 3, 2021, at the age of 82. Loutchan played a weekly gig at the 98 Hotel for over 40 years, and the strains of his lively, heartwarming, toe-tapping music could often be heard coming through the doors as eager music-loving patrons came in and out of the bar. In addition to being a ﬁddleplaying legend, Loutchan’s family described him as, “ a consummate Yukoner who captured the hearts of many as a mesmerizing ﬁddler,

outdoorsman, trapper, machinist and DIY repairman.” Loutchan touched so many lives with his music, and Yukoners are being invited to contrib-

Serves 4 INGREDIENTS ❑ .5 kg breakfast sausage, casing removed

In a large skillet over high heat, fry the sausage until cooked through. Add the scallions to the pan then turn off the heat.

Place a pot of water to boil and cook linguine according to package directions, reserving 1 cup of cooking liquid. Whisk together eggs and parmesan.

❑ 1/2 cup sliced scallions

❑ 450 grams linguine

Once linguine has been cooked and drained with 1 cup of water reserved, turn the heat back on under the sausage. When it starts to sizzle, add the cooked linguine, reserved pasta water and butter.

Cook, tossing the pasta constantly and scraping any bits of cooked sausage and scallion that have stuck to the bottom of the pan. Once the water has almost fully been absorbed, add the beaten eggs and turn off the heat. Continue to toss until the eggs have been cooked and turned into a creamy sauce. Serve topped with more parmesan and drizzled with maple syrup.

2021 EVENT INFO HAVING FUN AND STAYING SAFE Rendezvous staff and volunteers are thrilled to offer you a festival this year. Please note that we have made changes to all of our events in order to keep staff, volunteers, and participants safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. JOIN THE FUN VIRTUALLY Many of your favourite competitions will be virtual this year, with an interactive component and online voting. Those include the Upcycled Fashion Challenge, Pet Parade, Business Decor Contest, and Strength and Style competitions. The Snowshoe Shufflers and Can Can performances will also be available to watch online. Catch the Rendezvous Kickoff on Feb. 12 at facebook.com/Yukonrendezvous for a summary of events and updates. JOIN THE FUN IN PERSON We are running as many of our usual events as possible, with physical distancing and capacity rules in place. The Performance Stage, at the Yukon Arts Centre (Mainstage), will be free to attend again this year, but advanced registration is required. Performances will also be live streamed. The Sourdough Sam Showcase, a performance by last year’s Sams, will take place outdoors with limited tickets available (for ages 19+ only). Also taking place outside are the Snow Sculpture Exhibit, KIDSFEST (advanced registration recommended), and the Open Snowpad events including the Chainsaw Chuck, Axe Throwing, and Log Toss competitions. The Cultural Craft Fair will once again be indoors, so please be patient if there is a lineup. The Rendezvous Wrap Up Parade will follow a longer route this year so people can spread out and enjoy it like usual. PYRO-MUSICAL FIREWORKS We encourage you to watch the Fireworks show virtually, although you can also watch them outside from wherever you are in Whitehorse or from the safety of your car.

FIDDLE SHOW The ever-popular Fiddle Show offers a hybrid performance this year. Sarah Hamilton and the Fiddleheads are playing a limited-seating inside event. Following their show, Mark Sullivan, a three-time Grand Master Fiddle Champion, will take to the stage virtually. NO-GOS Unfortunately, there were some events that we aren’t able to offer. Those include the Quest for the Crown and Sourdough Sam competitions, Flour Packing and Mad/am Trapper events, and the Community Challenge. We will miss these events and plan to bring them back in 2022.

he midday sun beats down on the terraced slopes of the island of Taquile and dances on the surface of the water surrounding it. With a population of roughly 2,000 people, Taquile is one of several islands in the Peruvian part of Lake Titicaca. Its highest point lies at just over 4,000 metres from which you can see the occasional boat carrying travellers back and forth from the city of Puno. There are no cars here, no dogs barking at passersby. The blue of the sky and the blue of the lake melt together at the horizon and you almost feel like you’re on a different planet, overlooking an ocean at the top of a new world. Most visitors to Taquile come here for only a few hours, as part of a day tour from Puno. Boats stop at the ﬂoating islands of Uros and then continue on to Taquile for lunch and a glimpse of the local traditions. Tourism on the island is controlled and run by the

Local beer and good cheer by Heather LeDuc

here’s a whole lot of local in Gather Café and Taphouse, a recent addition to Whitehorse’s burgeoning culinary and bar scene. The small, bright eatery is founded on local designers, artists, builders, caterers, brewers, roasters and farmers. Owner John Ferguson likes to give them all credit. First on the list are his in-laws, Luann (Lu) Baker Johnson and Mel Johnson. Ferguson is married to their daughter, Shanta, and Gather is attached to their business, Lumel Studios. Since it opened in 2016, Lumel has been a friendly presence on the Whitehorse waterfront tramline. The Johnsons have always wanted the glass-blowing studio to be a welcome space for everyone. It’s no wonder that Gather, which extends from Lumel, is based on the same philosophy. The café is a cheerful, inviting space ﬁlled with colour, warmth and funky furnishings made with locally-sourced materials. “Happiness is paramount, everyone is a friend,” Baker Johnson says. “We’re trying to keep the same feel in both spaces.” The shared vibe is enhanced by the seamless connection between the two businesses. While I was

there, Lumel customers ﬂowed in and out, checking out the café and admiring the long, maple table made by Jason Patreau of Nature’s Workshop. The name “Gather” is also closely connected with the glass studio. I assumed the name referred to the purpose of the place, which is to provide folks with a place to gather and to share a small meal and drinks. But Ferguson explained the term is used in glass-blowing to refer to the process of gathering molten glass from the furnace. Gather’s logo consists of a watercolour image of a yellow and blue glass furnace

and the heat it emanates. Another interpretation of “gather” is the effort to “gather all things local” under one roof, Ferguson says. He walks the walk and is wearing a Yukon Built trucker hat. The entire space reﬂects the ethics the family brings to Gather, including “artists supporting artists,” using reclaimed materials, being sustainable and tapping into local talent wherever possible. This includes the glasswork of Baker Johnson, her husband Mel, and the entire Lumel crew, who created Gather’s glassware, tableware and even tap handles for the

craft beer. The pieces bring pops of colour to the space and add a special touch to the Gather drinking and dining experience. The café and tap house was designed by Mary Ellen Read of Northern Front Studio. The main construction was completed by Carmichael Contracting. Ferguson says he and the family “did the amateur building ourselves this summer.” He describes the construction as a “fun family project” that took place amidst a pandemic, the building of a home and the birth of a new Ferguson baby (a sibling to their toddler). The bar, which is a quirky patchwork of wood and corrugated tin, was made by Ferguson and his wife, Shanta. The bar countertop features wood from the Motorways building that once stood on the same location as Lumel and

The shelves for knick-knacks and glasses are made from ﬁr from Dredge #10 in Dawson. The walls are adorned with images created by Erin Holmes of Den Designs. “It’s a mix of home and a mix of rustic … as if someone built a home bar,” Ferguson says, attributing the eclectic style to the creative minds of his wife and mother-in-law. They wanted to create a space where people could feel “happy and at home.” While visiting with Ferguson and Johnson, I also met Gather’s chef, Daniela Sibaja (also sporting Yukon Built, in the form of a hoodie). Originally from Costa Rica, Sibaja has worked in a few local cookeries including a stint at cont’d on page 23 ...

At Gather, Sibaja promises to bring Yukoners some unique culinary experiences based on her Costa Rican background as well as her travels to places such as Chile and Argentina. Sibaja is using local ingredients, including greens from Cold Acre. Ferguson has given her full rein to do whatever she wants. Some of the tapas-style menu

items she mentions are vegetarian spring rolls, a kale salad with Caesar vegan dressing made from cashews, and fried plantains. Although Ferguson describes the kitchen as small, to Sibaja it’s a dream come true. “This is not small, this is amazing,” she says. “They’re giving me a chance to show what I can do.” As fortunate as Sibaja feels to have landed at Gather, Ferguson and Baker Johnson are equally excited to have her in the kitchen. “We’re really lucky to have [Sibaja] on board,” says Baker Johnson. “We couldn’t have found a better person to ﬁt this environment and to understand the spirit of this place.” Sibaja’s menu will be supplemented with assorted fare from

local favourites such as Alligator Catering, Yukon Ice Cream, Landed Bakehouse and Cucina Berna. With Sibaja taking care of things in the kitchen, Ferguson is tending bar. He worked for several years at one of Calgary’s top craft beer establishments and has a lot of knowledge when it comes to craft brews and cocktails. He has many friends in the local craft beer industry and is featuring products from Deep Dark Wood, Winterlong, Yukon Brewing and Solstice Ciderworks. For folks who prefer wine, Yukon Wines are available. Ferguson also mixes cocktails with ingredients (including syrups) he’s made himself. In 2005, they were declared by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Perhaps surprisingly, it’s the men who do all the knitting. The women spin the yarn and weave items such as the chuspas (small woven bags) that are traditionally used in the

Andes to carry coca leaves. The day-trippers hurry back down to the harbour after a few hours and the island is returned to its usual tranquility. The people of the island are kind and generous and very proud of their living culture. They still speak Quechua, practice their ancestral traditions and wear their traditional clothes. The women wear a black shawl (chuku) over their heads and vibrantly coloured skirts. The men wear black pants, a black vest and a white shirt

along with beautiful chullos (handknitted hats). Different chullos are worn by bachelors (one with a large white stripe), married men (red chullo with intricate designs) and men of authority (one with more colours and small ear ﬂaps). There is also a similar knitted hat (wawa chullo) that is used by children until they learn how to knit their own. Both men and women wear colourful woven belts called chumpis. Wherever one travels in the

world, the secrets of a place can only be unlocked with curiosity and observation. They are hidden in the people’s mannerisms, customs and way of life. In Peru, these can be seen most clearly in the woven and knitted textiles. As the continuation of a culture that never had a written language, they hold what the most treasured books might hold in other parts of the world. Besides tourism and making textiles, agriculture is the main activity for the people of Taquile. The year here is not measured by dates on a calendar, but instead by the agricultural activities that need to be completed, and the changing of the seasons that dictate those tasks. The principal crops grown in the ancient terraced ﬁelds include potato, corn, quinoa, fava beans, oca (oxalis tuberosa) and barley. These, along with local ﬁsh and a few domesticated animals, are what sustain life on the island.

Fact, rumour and speculation by Paul Rath

he most interesting thing about the 91 years Erwin A. Robertson spent on Earth is not the fact that he lost his teeth to scurvy and created a homemade replacement set from an eclectic mix of animal teeth. It’s not even that those dentures lasted until his death. Robertson, nicknamed Nimrod, was a gentlemen gold miner and inventor, whose homemade choppers were just one of many memorable things about him. Robertson displayed the spirit that is often found in those who call the North home. Northerners have a unique attitude and approach to life. Perhaps it is because we are shaped by our environment, or because the environment is so unforgiving, but we must meet the challenges or perish. Nimrod had that “never give up” attitude, as well as his inventive genius. For example, he created a relief map of the Eagle area. He also invented an engine to power the “flying machine” he was trying to finance with the earnings from gold prospecting. That’s the reason Robertson came North in the first place. While he was saving up those nuggets, however, the Wright brothers beat him with their own flying machine. Fortunately, Nimrod had more inventions to offer. According to the Yukon archives, E.A. Robertson crossed into Canada over the Chilkoot Trail on June 3, 1898. Beside his name, the location “Bangor, ME” is listed. Robertson had been a jeweller in Maine. He undoubtedly used his skills as a jeweller to set his new teeth into melted aluminium. He was part of the rush of stampeders who were headed North to strike it rich. Robertson made his way up the Yukon River and settled in Eagle, Alaska, just

Angela Linn-Dentures 12 miles up the Yukon River from Dawson City. Eagle is not far from Chicken, Alaska. Both were settled by gold miners in the early 1900s. In the case of Chicken, the story goes, the founding fathers could not agree on the spelling of the word ptarmigan, which were plentiful in the area, and a lifesustaining food staple. So as not to be embarrassed, the town was instead named Chicken. In her book Jewel on the Yukon Eagle City, a collection of essays on Historic Eagle and its people, Elva R. Scott states that Nimrod received his nickname as a young man. He was a crack shot, but preferred hunting and ﬁshing to gold mining, though he did mine in the Eagle area for 40 years. Stories and rumours have grown out of that time, swirling around the life of Nimrod like snowﬂakes in a January blizzard. One such rumour is that Nimrod killed a bear, then ate that bear, using the bear’s own teeth. A wry

touch of irony in that tale, however untrue it is. Nimrod did, however, use sheep, caribou and bear teeth for his dentures. The sheep teeth were ﬁrst, followed by caribou teeth, then followed the bear molars. Nimrod wore his teeth until he died, though he did complain that they transferred heat a little too well when he drank coffee or tea. Eagle is also known for another larger-than-life character named Roald Amundsen, the famed explorer. According to Stephen R. Brown in The Last Viking, Amundsen spent three winters iced in 65 kilometres east of Herschel Island. He’d ended up there after successfully navigating the Northwest Passage and was anxious to share the news of his accomplishment with the world. Amundsen travelled 800 miles from his ship, the Gjøa, and arrived in Eagle, Alaska, on December 5, 1905. Amundsen was keen to send a telegram to Norway to let the world know that
