OVID-19 pretty much shut down live music in Dawson in 2020. Sure, there were the physically distanced bars, regular monthly open mic/coffee house Saturday evenings, occasional special concerts and even last summer’s Dawson City Music Festival. This year the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (Dënäkär Zho), in partnership with the Dawson City Music Festival, has been trying hard to bring some of it back over the last few months. The result has been a series of Thursday and Friday evening

Brigitte Jardin and the City Slickers emphasized a country tinged set of tunes concerts, with a show that would normally have been a one night stand stretched over two in order to allow for limited seating of no more than 40 per night, with the coffee house style table settings well spaced apart. People have to sign up and pay for these $20 evenings in advance, using the Eventbrite online

system, and arrive prepared to be masked whenever they are not seated at their tables and in their bubbles. During the first few evenings people were required to remain masked for the whole slightly more than two hours, but that was later amended to allow them to unmask when seated in their

Uncle Jimmy Roberts and the Hammerstones were locals whose sound was heavily slanted towards indigenous fiddle tunes bubbles, which was a great relief. Audience members are still encouraged not to mingle. There’s been no way to have the usual sort of concession/ bar/potluck goodies for sale, but water, glasses, and tins of pop and juice are provided just inside the door at no extra charge. There have been two acts per

evening, with a short intermission between acts. One of the acts has been local talent, while most of the others have been visiting from Whitehorse. Now if they can just figure out how to restore our monthly coffee houses, it would give me an excuse to tune my guitar and practice. n

THE MASKED SINGERS

with

April 21, 2021

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalism student, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

Whitehorse Community choir is persevering, despite making changes due to pandemic restrictions

In September, the singers started practicing from a distance, employing some interesting methods to do so. They held

YouTube videos to learn their own parts, and recorded themselves singing with cellphones and other devices. The singers then

we’re all saying the same thing at the same time,” said Chamberlain. “It was a little overwhelming.”

I

t’s been a complicated year for Whitehorse Community Choir. Around a year ago, they went from regularly scheduled full rehearsals to absolutely nothing, and had no idea when or how they’d be able to return. Neither the 2020 spring or winter shows happened. “You don’t know what’s going happen,” said Barbara Chamberlain, the choir’s conductor and artistic director. “Then you start to plan for the fall, but there are a lot of unknowns.” As it became clearer that this pandemic wasn’t going away anytime soon, the members of the choir decided to adapt, and find creative new ways to rehearse and perform. Chamberlain said it was tough to have to scrap last year’s shows they had already put so much work into, and feeling optimistic about the future was another challenge. Though adapting a performance by a large vocal ensemble like Whitehorse Community Choir to an online format is much different than with a solo artist or small band, Chamberlain and the singers were determined to find a way to present their music virtually.

Whitehorse Community Choir altos (left to right) Carole Williams, Martie Welsh, Barbara Phillips, and Jan Horton record their part for a song called “Get Together” by The Youngbloods. practices over Zoom, with each singer at home. The altos and tenors practiced separately from the sopranos and basses because of the size of the group. The singers also used sheet music and

sent Chamberlain their recordings, and Chamberlain put them together into full-choir recordings. “Every one of those 42 tracks takes at least an hour to edit so

In addition to being an awful lot of work, Chamberlain said the singers felt they were missing out on the social community aspect that is such a huge part of the choir.

“There’s a big social aspect to the choir,” she said with a laugh. “Really, I have to get them to shut up a lot.” Another way the choir managed to create some recorded content was by showing up at the arts centre in smaller groups and singing six feet apart while wearing masks. Being recorded and filmed. When the four groups were finished, Chamberlain edited and mixed the audio, and the choir’s videographer, Jessica Hall, put the visual content together. This method worked better, but because there weren’t enough headphones to go around, they had to use monitors, the sound from which was picked up in the background of the recordings and had to be edited out. Now, the choir is finally able to start putting on live shows again. On April 30 and May 1, they will be presenting Look on the Bright Side!, a set of shows at the Yukon Arts Centre which will also be streamed online. For these shows, the choir will be accompanied by pianist Barry Kitchen. Both shows start at 8 p.m., and tickets can be purchased for $20 at yukontickets.com. Those who choose to watch the livestream can pay whatever they decide. Chamberlain said all the singers are extremely excited to finally be able to perform live again, and get the release that singing and performing give them. “The thing about singing is that it releases endorphins and makes everyone happy,” she said. “Unless they’re on the wrong note, maybe.” n

Peter Turner

VINO BOREALIS

Peter lives on a lake just north of Whitehorse, and says “I’m a ‘wine enthusiast’, not a ‘wine connoisseur’… I still have lots to learn!” In a past life, he was a wine merchant for the largest wine store in the U.S. Midwest, offering more than 4500 choices. He blames his life-long love of wines to growing up in Montreal with wine-loving parents, who let him start tasting at about age two.

POUR ONE OUT DURING THE PANDEMIC When we could still travel, a trip to wine country boosted spirits

Whitehorse Community Choir

A

lmost a year into this pandemic, we’re all dreaming about travelling again. Last summer, during the B.C. bubble, my wife and I took a road trip to explore Okanagan vineyards. Normally, when we travel to B.C., we try out restaurants with exciting menus and wine lists. This trip was a very different experience, but revealed some surprising benefits to wine tasting during a pandemic. Approaching the Okanagan from the northwest, we had the opportunity to see the entire range of climates the valley contains. Coming through Vernon, the surrounding hills were dry, brown and relatively desert-like, a perception heightened by sunny weather and temperatures of 35 degrees C. Mid-point between Vernon and Kelowna, appropriately referred to as ‘Lake County,’ the temperature is moderated by Okanagan Lake to the west, and Kalamalka and Wood Lakes to the east. There, it becomes greener and vine-covered. We passed (and the next day visited) 50th Parallel Estate Winery. Known for its Pinot Noirs, it is effectively the gateway to wine country. We overnighted at an Airbnb above O’Rourke’s Peak Cellars and wandered down to taste their Pinot Gris, Rosé, Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Noir. These four wines, along with German varietals including Gewürztraminer and Riesling, are go-to wines of the north Okanagan. I particularly enjoyed the Grüner Veltliner, originally an

Chilled down, it had notes of citrus and gooseberry, with an herbal bouquet and clean mineral finish (a finish is the taste in your mouth after you swallow). O’Rourke’s Peak is not sold in the Yukon, but the Yukon Liquor Corp. (YLC) has carried Austrian Grüner Veltliners in the past. Keep your eyes peeled for these summer patio sippers, priced around $20. As wine enthusiasts, it was a

thrill to arrive at Gray Monk Estate Winery just as it opened. It was a cloudless summer morning, with spectacular views over their vineyards down to the lake. We had the tasting room all to ourselves. With COVID, perhaps a third of Okanagan vineyards were not open for tasting, another third only with advanced reservations. If you were lucky, you could walk into the remainder. Gray Monk

Pour one out during the pandemic ... cont’d from Page 7 fell into the third category, but staff were asking all the screening questions, observing social distancing, and our pourers wearing masks. We started with a refreshing Estate Rosé, with fun notes of rhubarb, grapefruit, and bright red fruit. Throughout the Okanagan, vineyards are making increasingly interesting Rosé wines, ranging from bone dry to off-sweet, but are really becoming exciting! Don’t be put off by their pink (or even towards orange) colouring. They are a world away from Mateus and pink Zinfandels that were on the shelves 15 years ago! I want to pair one with halibut this coming summer. Gray Monk, with its north Okanagan location, has historically focused on whites. Its Pinot Auxerrois (YLC $20.95), was next to taste. This lovely yellow-hued white wine is a specialty of the vineyard, with a clear apple bouquet (bouquet is the smell) to it, no doubt influenced by the neighbouring orchards. The taste, however, takes you into the citrus range, with hints of honeydew

and cantaloupe. Imagine this being served with a chicken alfredo, scallops or shrimp. It would go great with rich, creamy sauces. We moved on to the high-end Odyssey Pinot Gris, a stand-out example of a grape that the whole Okanagan is excelling in. Gray Monk uses hand-picked grapes from its Block 8 Estate Vineyard, where the 40-year-old vines are some of the oldest in British Columbia. Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are my two B.C. white wine grapes. This wine, though not currently carried at the YLC, is worth looking out for. It has a light copper hue from the grape skins, a red apple bouquet, and a solid, but not too sharp, taste with some spice, melon and pear. I’ll serve it with either salmon or a mushroom dish in the months ahead. We also tasted both the Odyssey champagne-style Brut (YLC $27.65) and the Odyssey Merlot (YLC $25.20). The bubbly was great fun at 10:30 in the morning, with a fresh green apple nose, a combination of nuttiness (think toasted hazelnuts), hints of lime and even a bit of honey. The Merlot, which is made from grapes grown down by Oliver, to the south, is a good expression of a B.C. Merlot, with dark fruit (black cherries), a spiciness and hints of licorice on the palate. I will confess that it was outshone later in the week by a Merlot we tried at Nk’Mip Cellars in Osoyoos, albeit for $5 more per bottle. After tasting Pinot Noir at 50th Parallel Estate Winery and a peoplewatching, alfresco lunch at Block One Restaurant, it was off for a cooling dip

CLIMATE CRISIS

S

o often today we see governments and businesses declaring a climate emergency. But why? What is important about taking this action or making this statement? Let’s take a step back and identify what a climate emergency is first, then we can discuss the reasons for a government’s decision to take this step. The phrase climate emergency or crisis involves both climate change and its consequences. It is often broadly used to describe the global risk of climate change and the dire effects that may well occur without strong, effective mitigation strategies. Mitigation strategies are plans and/or approaches to reduce both the impacts of, and emissions from, greenhouse gases. These strategies can range from renewable energy sources such as solar or electric thermal storage, to protecting carbon sink regions such as wetlands. Mitigation strategies differ from climate change adaptation in that adaptations refer more to actions that are taken to adjust to or prepare for the present and future effects of climate change. Adaptation strat-

egies range from actions such as ensuring adequate disaster plans are developed and put in place or establishing protocols for more intense wildfire seasons. The declaration of a climate emergency is an acknowledgement by a government, institution, organization, or business that the planet and humanity are in a climate emergency or crisis. It is also an admission that the climate crisis is human-driven and therefore humans must look for solutions or mitigations. Additionally, that there is a demonstrated link between the concentration of greenhouse gases and the average temperature globally. A declaration acknowledges that the crisis is present now rather than at some future time. It is a reaction to the wildfires, severe weather events, permafrost melt, sea level changes and erosion that scientists and individuals are seeing on a daily basis. Additionally, the climate change will continue to impact basic human needs such as access to food, secure housing, safe transportation and affordable energy costs. In addition, a declaration recognizes the need for a reduction in emissions that will limit global warming to 1.5°C as outlined in the Paris Agreement. This type of resolution is also implicitly stating that the current manner in which humanity is engaging with the global environment is not only ineffectual but damaging. Finally, and most importantly a declaration is a call to action.

Sundogs over the Yukon River How does a government or other entity declare a Climate Crisis or Emergency? The very short answer is after, for example, a Federal government has come to an agreement within its legislative bodies it will develop a document stating something to the effect of “we acknowledge that there is a Climate Emergency in . . .” followed by a list of points for acknowledgement, ie: climate change is negatively impacting human existence, a target date to decrease the effects of climate change in the region, and the framework for short and long-term actions. The first such declaration was enacted in 2016 and since then more than 38 countries and thousands of local

communities have declared a climate emergency. These numbers include Yukon First Nations, the Yukon Government and City of Whitehorse. Establishing a climate emergency resolution will only make real change if there are concrete plans enacted and acted upon. Therefore, once this resolution is established and published there are a number of potential benefits that may be realized. The first of these is that a government is able to lay out a plan and determine the priorities to mitigate climate change. Additionally, it allows for governments to enact policies and strategies to reduce emissions. As part of this process a government will also need to outline and pri-

PHOTO: Carol Voss oritize the actions to ensure a decline in emissions. Furthermore, the passing of this type of resolution will raise awareness not only with community members, businesses or countries but externally with other cities, corporations and the international community. This awareness creates internal and external pressures on other levels of government and businesses. By enacting a resolution as an emergency, there are legal avenues open to governments, in particular, to create legislation and act more quickly on strategies. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres recently stated, “the climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win.” n

ecause I’m perpetually single, I’m always dating,” says Karen McColl, laughing. “And when you’re in that situation you find yourself in a lot of conversations about dating.” McColl and Jordan Patrick took that reality and turned it into a new podcast. “Now when I go to social events people want to talk about the podcast,” says McColl. “Which is ultimately still a discussion about dating, but in a new medium.” McColl and Patrick co-host Frisky North of 60. The podcast shares the stories of people of diverse interests and backgrounds living in the North, shining a light on the quirky, comical, and honest side of dating here in the North while building connections between those looking for love. Each episode features an inter-

view with a person about a specific topic, prefaced by some banter provided by the lively hosts. The interviewees are drawn from a combination of individuals McColl and Patrick have sought out and others who have reached out to them with a topic they would like to bring to the show. At this point, there’s a long list of future speakers queued up to join the show. “Issues of consent, self-discovery and healthy relationships have been featured heavily so far,” says McColl. “Topics that are important to talk about, but are not often talked openly about, at least in a local sense.” “The most rewarding and surprising thing for me about the process is how much I’m learning by doing this, by talking to people with different perspectives,” says Patrick. Frisky North of 60 launched in December and has gained rapid attention from listeners. By early March the podcast had already racked up 3,000 downloads and a rating of 4.7 stars on Chartable, with listeners sending feedback that they are loving the content and intend to binge all of the episodes. Patrick and McColl aren’t content to keep their program solely

in the audible realm however. In February they partnered up with My Cheeky Date to offer a virtual speed dating event. “You can only do the Millennium Trail so many times on a first Tinder date before it starts getting a little stale so it was really fun to offer a physical alternative, especially in this time of COVID,” says Patrick. McColl and Patrick would like to do more events in the future and are open to making more connections with local companies. “If anyone wants to collaborate with us we’re open to that,” said Patrick. “Frisky North of 60 has been a really fun project so far,” says McColl. “We are providing a platform for people to share their stories and their views and it feels like it’s helping to bring this little community together around dating in the North.” Patrick agrees. “It’s providing a venue to normalize everyone’s perspectives and highlight that everyone’s perspectives are valid. I look forward to hearing more people sharing their stories as we move forwards.” Frisky North of 60 can be found at: friskynorthof60.podbean.com. n

Cali is an 11 month old, female, Greenland Dog. She is very energetic and needs a job to keep her busy both mentally and physically as she gets bored easily when left alone, and can be a bit destructive, so needs this stimulation to get her energy out. She will need time, patience, socialising, training and routine. Cali is not good with cats, and is ok with some dogs, but not others, and will do best with older children, who can also help with her training! If you are interested in adopting Cali, please fill out an online application at https://humanesocietyyukon.ca/adoptions/dog/cali If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 6336019 to put your application towards her.
