reary and Izzy is a 2007 play written by Tara Beagan, a playwright of Ntlaka’pamux and Irish-Canadian heritage. The narrative takes place in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1975. It centres on a pair of sisters, Deirdre and Isabelle Monoghan, who have lost their parents in a car accident. Dierdre is preparing to enter university and set out on a journey to find her own future, but must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to take care of her older sister, an adopted young Blackfoot woman who was born with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). A vacuum cleaner salesman named Freddie Seven Horses shows up in the girls’ lives as a beacon of hope, offering them a way to cope with their reality and push through to a better life. Whitehorse’s Guild Hall, in partnership with Gwaandak Theatre, will be presenting Dreary and Izzy live from May 13 to May 29, with a preview on May 12. All showings will start at 8 p.m., and tickets can be bought online at yukontickets. com for $26, but attendees of the Wednesday showings can choose what they wish to pay. In the role of director is Katey Wattam. The play’s four-piece cast consists of Brenda Barnes, Katelyn Clark, Isabelle JamesWalker and Colin Wolf. A large artistic and production team includes Mary Sloan as stage manager, Adrian Woodhouse as assistant stage manager, Blake Shaá’koon Lepine as set designer, Kasey Rae Anderson as lighting designer, Gloria Mok as costume designer, Annie Hakim as props designer, Martin

Nishikawa as technical director and sound designer, Al Loewen as head carpenter, Lea-Ann McNally as set consultant, Katherine Kellner as lighting consultant, Philip Geller as acting/directing support and Odile Nelson as production manager. The Guild staff also contributing include artistic director Brian Fidler, general manager Brandon Wicke and The Guild Board, serving as executive producers. The Gwaandak Theatre’s staff working on the production include artistic director Colin Wolf, production coordinator Sara German, managing director Martin Nishikawa and artistic producer Meredith Pritchard. Dreary and Izzy is a widely acclaimed play which has garnered praise from publications including Toronto’s NOW Magazine and the Toronto Star. Tara Beagan has written a total of 28 plays, seven of which are published. Her work has also been nominated for Dora Awards, one of which she won. Beagan was also a finalist in the Al-

She has done residencies all over the country, including such cities as Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg and even at the Yukon’s own Berton House in Dawson City. The Guild Hall has been producing theatre in Whitehorse for 40 years. The theatre features two dance studios/rehearsal halls, an alternative performance space with a bar and small stage, and an outdoor performance space with physically distanced seating for 30 people to cooperate with COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines. Dreary and Izzy is recommended for audiences aged 16 and over, as the play’s content includes the Sixties Scoop, racism, ableism, bodily autonomy and sexually explicit subject matter. Anne’s Dumplings took off in the last year

What’s Inside

nne Huang-Power can’t keep up with the demand for her dumplings. More often than not, half an hour after she’s opened pre-orders on the website for Anne’s Dumplings, she’s sold out. When she participated in the Fireweed Market’s 12 Days of Christmas last year, market-goers were queueing up for her perfectly-formed morsels of dough and filling. For Huang-Power, the overwhelming response to her dumplings, or “dumps” as she fondly calls them, caught her by surprise. “I still get nervous when people buy them,” she says. “I know they’re delicious. Even though I know they’re good, I just hope everyone enjoys them. Because I put a lot of work into them, everything is handmade … it connects me to my family and to my heritage. It’s a joyful thing for me so I hope people feel joy and happiness when they eat them.” Each dumpling is painstakingly folded and crimped by HuangPower. They are small, uniform and resemble little fish, which are symbols of luck and plenty. Huang-Power says she learned her unique crimping style, which she calls the “mermaid crimp,” from her paternal cousins in China. Born in China, Huang-Power moved with her family to England when she was four. On big holi-

Anne Huang-Power is the dumpling master days, such as the Lunar New Year, the family gathers around the table and makes dumplings. Each family has their own recipe and own way of folding the dough. As much as dumplings are an integral part of her familial ties and Chinese heritage, her new business is a far cry from her previous career. For 12 years, HuangPower worked in the fashion in-

dustry as a celebrity marketer and influencer. She started her career in London, then moved to Toronto four years ago to be with her husband-to-be Ben Power, who co-owns Solvest Inc., a solar energy company in Whitehorse. Once in Canada, Huang-Power continued working in the fashion industry. She flew back to London for Fashion Week, and to visit

with her family at the same time. However, it was tough for her husband to run Solvest from Toronto and the couple eventually made the move to the Yukon in September, 2019. Huang-Power initially kept working freelance in fashion, but when the pandemic hit, the botcont’d on page 4 ...

Yummy Dumplings ... cont’d from page 3

PHOTOS: GBP Creative tom fell out of the industry. This provided a welcome break from a career that was taking its toll on her. “It sounds glamourous, but it wasn’t,” Huang-Power says. “12 years was enough.” She says that most of her former fashion colleagues switched

direction and took up careers in wellness. Some are pilates and yoga instructors, others are life coaches. In a way, Huang-Power’s dumplings are products of a similar interest in the well-being of others. “Food always has been a huge part of my life. I think that for a

lot of Asian families, food is the main thing. And food is how many people show love and show they care.” Huang-Power explains that saying “Have you eaten today?” demonstrates concern for someone’s well-being. It’s like saying, “How are you?”

And so, with the fashion industry at a standstill, Huang-Power cancelled the contracts she’d been working on and found another creative and productive outlet. “I started making dumplings for my friends and for Ben’s family and for charity, just to do

something with my time.” The charity Huang-Power raised money for is Lupus Canada. She has lupus herself, and is keen to increase awareness of this little-known autoimmune disease. May is Lupus Awareness Month, and that’s when she started dumpling production. Her intention was to highlight the disease and raise money while doing something she liked. At the same time, she was connecting with her cultural heritage and her family at a time when she couldn’t travel to England to see them. Once May ended and Lupus Awareness Month was over, Huang-Power didn’t intend to make more dumplings. Her arms and hands were tired. She had “dumpling claw,” she says, gesturing with her hands. However, once friends got a taste for the dumplings, they didn’t want the supply to dry up. When Huang-Power suggested she might not continue, friends offered to pay for them. It’s then that she thought, “Maybe there’s something here.” Once the seed for a dumpling business was planted, HuangPower discovered ways to help make it happen. The first thing she did was sign up for the Startup Bootcamp offered by Yukonstruct at Northlight Innovation. She credits the course and its instructor, William Lechuga, with building her confidence. Eleven of the 12 bootcamp participants were women, and Huang-Power found her cohort to be like-minded and supportive. “All the women were so strong and so ambitious.” Another opportunity came when Huang-Power became accont’d on page 10 ...

Three local organizations working toward creating a community youth can feel safe in one conversation at a time

W

hen it comes to movies, it’s enthralling to watch romances like that between Edward and Bella of Twilight, romances characterized by obsession - and a total lack of boundaries. We root for characters like Sierra Burgess when she kisses her romantic interest without his consent. While these seem like fun fictional fantasy, the reality is not that far off when it comes to teen romance. One in ten teens have been sexually assaulted by a dating partner. Forty-one percent of perpetrators of sexualized violence are under the age of 25. To protect the young people in our lives, it’s key for them to be able to understand and practice consent and boundaries. These life skills are essential for kids and youth to grow up healthy and happy. Three local organizations have built teaching, modelling, and practicing these skills into their youth programming.

Youth Friendship Circle Inclusion Yukon’s Youth Friendship Circle uses conversation, con-

nection with peers, and activities to inform youth on the importance of understanding and practicing consent and boundaries in their daily lives. “Information is what keeps you safe so you can make an informed decision. I want youth to have the information they need to reroute tricky situations,” says Maddi Scott, the program’s coordinator. When young people learn to recognize and respect boundaries and to communicate their own boundaries in a healthy way, they are not only better able to protect themselves, but also they are less likely to potentially cause harm. For kids, pushing boundaries in play can be a part of normal everyday life. While this can be relatively harmless among kids, those same behaviours as they get older it “could become something very dangerous. We want to teach them before they are even in a position where they could pressure someone into an unsafe situation.” Friendship Circle is free for youth ages 12 to 21 and runs every Thursday 6:30pm-8pm until June 17th at Inclusion Yukon’s office. For more information, contact Inclusion Yukon by email or phone.

BYTE’s Healthy Relationships Workshops Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE), a for-youth-by-youth organization, is leading conversations around healthy relationships and consent across Yukon. In workshops, youth facilitators focus on what healthy relationships look and feel like – acceptable and unacceptable behaviours, healthy

PHOTO: Pixabay boundaries, and the importance of self-love and setting standards for yourself. “Having awareness of your own personal boundaries and standards sets you up to learn what you’re comfortable with, what you’re not, what you tolerate from other people,” says Abbey Gartner, Program Coordinator at BYTE, “and being able to stand up for yourself if you know something is not right with your partner… without getting too far into it while being able to understand it is not your fault if you are a victim of dating violence.” Gartner notes that it’s also essential for all young people to be able to easily spot and identify dating violence – whether it’s happening to them or to someone they know. “It’s important for young people to be able to identify what [dating violence] is, reflect on it

and notice if it is happening to them or a friend because it’s a lot more prevalent than you think it is.” BYTE runs workshops in Yukon communities throughout the year. Their website yukonyouth.com has more information about booking workshops and free workbooks.

Rock the North Packed into each day of this music camp are opportunities and

teachable moments for practicing consent and boundaries. “We practice consent constantly with the kids,” says founder Lana Welchman. “If they are going to grab a guitar that isn’t theirs, they have to ask for consent.” Each day, participants form a high five tunnel everyone walks through. Using verbal and nonverbal cues, they communicate whether they want a high five or not. This daily exercise gives the kids a choice in how their body can be touched and it also teaches the important skill of reading body language. Rock the North aims to create a safe space for participating youth ages 8-18. With the experience of a safe space and their new skills around consent and boundaries, youth are better positioned to identify issues and navigate uncomfortable experiences they may face when they re-enter the real world. “When [feeling safe] becomes your normal, you are able to identify when things don’t make you feel safe.” Visit rockthenorth.org for more information and upcoming programs. n

A CHEESY BUSINESS PLAN

with

Amber Church

Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Craft from your own kitchen When Jill Johnstone left her University of Saskatchewan faculty position to head to the Yukon three years ago, she wanted to find a way to stay engaged in science. The semiretired biology professor chose to turn to cheesemaking for her scientific outlet.

“I do really like eating cheese,” she says. “That’s a pretty important prerequisite to start making your own cheese.” When COVID hit, Johnstone was looking for more ways to stay engaged with the community. She came up with the idea of sharing her expertise with other Yukoners by teaching an online course. She piloted programming with a group of friends in the fall of 2020 in order to sort out the inevitable glitches that arise from a new project. Then she partnered up with Chef Cat McInroy at the Well Bread Culinary Centre to expand the course’s scope. Johnstone would cover creating a range of cheeses and McInroy would share with the students a series of

cooking tips for making use of their creations. The result is a 12-week program that runs every second week. The program is designed to make learning cumulative, building through six different modules that move towards increasingly more complex processes. Johnstone says the classes start with butter and crème fraiche, building in difficulty in such a way that students can hone skills and confidence over time, in the company of someone who can help cont’d on page 9 ...

them troubleshoot. “By the time they’re done they can make fresh cheese at home.” A broad spectrum of cheeses are covered in the program, including cream cheese, feta, chevre, mozzarella, halloumi and a number of firm cheeses that are heat-treated or salted to get certain textures. Throughout the program Johnstone also shares her love of the science that allows cheesemaking to happen. “I try to get people to learn about the underlying scientific processes,” she says. “The role of heat and acidity, the microbial cultures, and how these factors impact how a cheese tastes or melts.” Johnstone began her most

recent offering of the course in late January. She says it’s worked well to have people work in their own kitchens. Not only does this mean classes aren’t contingent on current COVID restrictions, people can get comfortable with their own tools and appliances. Due to the course’s length, and Yukoners’ tendencies to make use of every shred of summer sun, the next installment of the program probably won’t run until the fall. Johnstone is already keeping a list, however, of those who would like to take part next time around. If you’re interested in exploring your inner cheesemaker you can email jfj.npel@ gmail.com to be added to the list for upcoming course offerings. n

the Marwell industrial area. She invited Huang-Power to join the collective of food makers there. By summer, Huang-Power was dumpling-testing at the factory. In December, when bootcamp was done, she was ready for the Christmas markets. Oland predicted that she was going to be “crazy busy” and she was right. So after an “insane” Christmas market experience and wildly successful online sales, where does Huang-Power go from here? Her plan to scale up includes supplying establishments such as grocery stores. Her dumplings are already on the menu at Woodcutter’s Blanket. However, producing enough dumplings by hand is “physically impossible” so she’s ordered commercial equipment, including a crimper from China. Huang-Power already bottles a dumpling sauce, and plans to make more sauces for stir fries and salads. She’s experimenting with new dumpling fillings, as well as gluten-free options, and imagines collaborations with the other makers at the factory space, which officially opened as Yukon Provisions on March 13. And, in addition to Lucky Rabbit Boba (bubble tea), she has other schemes afoot. The enthusiastic response from her Yukon customers has buoyed her entrepreneurial spirit. During a global pandemic that has heightened racism towards Asians, she’s found folks here to be supportive of both her and her cultural heritage. “I’m really grateful,” she says. “Whitehorse and the Yukon have been amazing and I’m so thankful for all the support. It’s been really heartwarming and really emotional. People are really supportive and they want something different. They’re really open to trying things they haven’t tried before and they’re really open to accepting my culture through food and I think it’s such a beautiful thing. I’ve been so lucky.” Anne’s Dumplings can be preordered from her website: annesdumplings.square.site. You can also check out her Instagram (annes_dumplings) and Facebook (@AnnesDumplingsYukon). n

Broccoli pancakes with garlic, oregano and chili flakes ... cont’d METHOD

1

Heat a large drizzle of olive oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. When oil is shimmering, add chopped broccoli, garlic and oregano. Cook until broccoli is soft, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat while you make the pancake batter.

2

Whisk together eggs, greek yogurt and flour until smooth. Add cooked broccoli and toss until broccoli is fully coated. Return pan to heat and add another drizzle of olive oil. When the oil is shimmering add the batter by the ¼ cup, cook for 2 minutes and flip. Cook until both sides are brown then repeat with remaining batter. Serve with more greek yogurt and a sprinkle of chili flakes.

Zoë Armstrong This Is How I Listen: The Art of Dyslexia Quilters of Whitehorse & Haines As You See It

Diamond is an 8 year old, female, Small Mixed Breed dog. Diamond is a special little dog who becomes attached quickly to a caretaker. She has been very good with all of the staff at the shelter but in trial adoption phases has become protective of one family member so we prefer to find a home with one or 2 adults in the home. Diamond has a history of nipping but we feel this can be overcome in a home where she has assertive humans who will guide and work on her training. She’s willing to please and is just a lovely companion dog. She reacts well to commands and does well on a leash. We are working with her daily and she is responding very well to training. If you have the time and the willingness to continue with training, Diamond will make an excellent companion dog. We are looking for a home with adults only for her. We are also committing to working with a new adopter in ongoing training and support. This sweet girl just needs to find someone willing to give her the time and positive reinforcement needed to make her feel secure and loved. If you are interested in adopting Diamond, please fill out an online application at https://humanesocietyyukon.ca/adoptions/dog/diamond If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards her.

We are trying to reduce the future over’PUP’ulation in the North, by adopting to family’s that will spay & neuter. Mountains rise in the distance at the Arctic Circle kiosk The Yukon spawns people who, like the territory itself, are larger than life. People who think nothing of travelling hundreds of kilometres by dog sled at -50 degrees C, navigating only by their wits and ability to use the stars to guide them. My wife and I are not those kinds of people.

T

here are also people with a wanderlust that compels them to consistently take the road less travelled (and who must follow a road until it ends) just to see what is there and be able to say they have been there. We are those kinds of people. I inherited this wanderlust honestly. As a child, my father took me to where the pavement ended on the Alaska highway. At the time, that was 16 kilometres north of Fort Saint John, British Columbia. I grew up 96 kilometres east of Dawson Creek where Mile 0 marked the beginning of the Alaska Highway. The highway was the stuff of myth and legend, spoken about with reverence and respect. We heard tales of those who had driven it. In the late 60s, we were in awe of those brave souls who challenged the Alaska Highway and survived. Much has

changed since then. Gas and services are more plentiful. It is certainly not the adventure and challenge it once was. The stories of that adventure, however, planted a seed in me. I wanted to drive the whole Alaska Highway. It took me more than 50 years to drive the entire 2288 kilometres. I completed the last stretch a couple of summers ago. As the Alaska Highway became more accessible and faded from myth and legend, we needed another road to capture our imagination and challenge us. The Dempster Highway, for me and many others, became the new Holy Grail. It enticed us with the promise of adventure, of unseen vistas. It dared us to test our mettle against it. The Dempster, as many refer to the highway, be-

The terrain at the Northwest Territory Boundary marker came the new item on our bucket list. Our first encounter with the Dempster was many years ago, on more of a whim than anything. We set out on the Dempster with only one spare tire and no realistic plan. We had no survival gear, or food, or water. I’ll say that again—we plunged ahead without a realistic plan of any kind. Don’t do that. It took us six hours to travel from Dawson City to the Arctic Circle. I thought it would have taken us no more than four hours. Silly me. That trip, we only had one flat tire and still remark

to this day how reasonable the flat repair was at Eagle Plains. They could have charged much more than they did and we would have gladly paid. At the Arctic Circle kiosk, my wife and I debated whether to press on to The Northwest Territories, which, at the time, was still on our bucket list. Eventually we decided that the additional 45 minutes each way was not a prudent use of our time. We still had to navigate our way back down the Dempster to Dawson. We did, however, plan to return, drive to Inuvik, then fly to Tuktoyak-

tuk, and put our hand in the Arctic Ocean, to check that off our list. Ten years flew by, while we chased other adventures, without realizing the dream that still whispered to us. The Dempster was in our own backyard, after all, and needed to be explored. Then a few years ago, as part of the Canada 150 celebrations, a road was built connecting Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk. It was a sign. n Pick up the next issue of What’s Up Yukon to read Part 2 of this tale!

Yukoners At Work Sarah Zander, Mitchel Andre and Dakota Hinson Victoria Gold Corp is very proud to have hundreds of Yukoners at Work at the company’s owned and operated Eagle Gold Mine. Throughout the mine’s construction and now into its operation, approximately 50 per cent of the mine’s employees are Yukon residents. Yukoner Sarah Zander has worked at the Eagle Gold Mine since last November as an Administrative Assistant for the Site Services Department. One of the duties within her role includes scheduling the site crew within the mine’s three-week on, three-week off employee rotation. “I really enjoy the culture of teamwork and community here at the Eagle Gold Mine,” says Sarah. “Participating in a project with colleagues that share similar goals and values is very meaningful and my background in exploration and administration have helped make my role at the mine a perfect fit for me.”
