ometimes life gets in the way of making music. This has been the case for Sara MacDonald, frontwoman of Whitehorse folk-rock act The August Arrival, who has three young kids to take care of and doesn’t always get a lot of time to devote to her music. “Life just got a little bit busy,” she says. “I’ve been writing the whole time, but it’s nice to be putting out something a little more public.” MacDonald had been playing some newly written music with her friend Erica Mah, another

pening in the world, so this past year has provided plenty of opportunities to do that. “I can be in a heavier space when I start a song, but by the end it’s resolved,” she says. “It’s a total coping mechanism for me and it’s very therapeutic.” The title All Blue and Gold was inspired by the way songwriting makes MacDonald feel, as she often feels “blue” at the start of her writing process, but “gold” by the end. She can feel when there’s a song to be written, but doesn’t know exactly how it will take shape until she actually sits down to write it. When she gets this feeling, it’s imperative for her to take the time as soon as possible to get it out. “If I don’t make the space for it that window sometimes closes and it becomes a bit more efcont’d on page 3 ...

This book is like no memoir you’ve ever read. Paul Rath writes with the soul of a poet, his prose alive with vibrant images and metaphors that capture the raw beauty and challenges of fishing for white fish in the frigid November air – “when the wind takes us into her cold mouth, and crunches us between her teeth. Her cold makes our eyes freeze – until they feel like stones, frozen in their sockets of mud ...” Yet this no mere fish story. As much as this book is about fishing, it is even more about relationships. Fishing with My Fathers explores the deep bonds that form between men of the earth, between men and the land and the water and the creatures that feed their spirits. Rath, the eldest son of a Lutheran pastor, pays homage to his father and tribute to the men who shaped and challenged him, even as he claimed his own space and place in their lineage. With wonderful humour and genuine sensitivity, he regales the reader with tales of his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, as well as of his mentors – of the men who taught him how to grow up, how to control his emotions, how to work, how to grow his spirit, how to love, as well as how to fish.

well-known local musician, who suggested she reach out to producer Jordy Walker of Stackwall Sound to see about recording some of her songs. They started out doing one song and, because she enjoyed the process and realized how much she had missed recording music, MacDonald decided to record a few more songs for a studio release. The EP, titled All Blue and Gold, was released on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms on March 5, a couple weeks ahead of when MacDonald had originally planned. “It was just a little bit of a push from some good friends to make it happen.” Typically, MacDonald does her songwriting late at night in her kitchen, once her kids are in bed and her house is quiet. Songwriting is an outlet MacDonald uses to process the things that are hap-

A new arrival ... cont’d fort,” she says. “But it just kind of comes. I try not to overthink it.” MacDonald applied for a Yukon Sound Recording Grant. When her application was accepted, she felt more of a push to actually put something out for people to hear. Calling it a “vote of confidence,” she says the grant gave her the confidence and encouragement she needed to know that her music could resonate with listeners. The credits for All Blue and Gold, in addition to MacDonald on guitar and vocals and Walker taking the production credit as well as contributing drums, bass, electric guitars, accordion, zither and vocals, include Erica Mah and Bethan Davies on guest vocals, Darcy McCord on cello, Tara Martin on drums and Micah Smith on bass. Macdonald says the atmosphere while making the album was relaxed and enjoyable. She says working with Walker was a highlight, as the two were on the same page and collaborated well. “We had a similar vision for all the songs,” she says. “It felt quite easy and natural.” Though MacDonald sometimes struggles with impostor syndrome, she was happy to find herself in a very supportive environment while working with admirable local musicians on her EP. She was able to take inspiration from them and feel more confident in her own abilities, especially seeing how much fun everyone was having. “There’s a lot of positive selftalk that needs to happen when I’m not in my kitchen alone,” she says. “I think it’s something everyone has to work through.” All Blue and Gold is The August Arrival’s first release since 2011’s Skyline Goodbyes. leased something new, MacDonald has found an itch to keep recording, and hopes to release a fulllength album in the near future. “I know I have material to make another album,” she says. “With festivals and shows, it’s a little up in the air, but I know an album is realistic and doable.” MacDonald has a refreshing

approach to making music that shows when she speaks about it. She doesn’t feel the need to be driven by strict deadlines; just enjoying making music with friends and releasing her emotions through her songs is what it’s about. She hopes her music will speak to others as well, but doesn’t want to rely solely on out-

side praise for validation. “Everyone is doing it because they enjoy it,” she says. “Music is a very healing thing and it’s nice to be around people who share that same passion for it.” To listen to All Blue and Gold and keep up with The August Arrival, visit theaugustarrival. com. n

GREEN TALK WITH YCS

Tera Swanson is the membership and communications coordinator for YCS.

A DECADE OF CREATED AT THE CANYON

T

his summer marks the 10th anniversary of Yukon Conservation Society’s “Created at the Canyon,” a live multimedia art event celebrating the creative process of local artists. Beginning in 2012 as “Painting the Trails” and then “Miles Canyon in Art,” it was finally renamed “Created at the Canyon” in 2016. In the last decade, 42 artists working with a plethora of mediums have come together to create. With every artist bringing their unique perspective, background, skill set, media and interpretation of this natural geological landmark, each piece is as distinct as the next. Stationed along the trail system from Miles Canyon to Canyon City, artists bring along every creative tool imaginable to bring their creative interpretations to life. Rich details inspire the senses here, like the grandeur of towering granite cliffs plunging into the turquoise river below, luminescent with rock flour carried from the Cascade mountains. Others are more minute, such as a rainbow of lichen speckling the canyon walls, or the earthy fragrance of the nearby forest and wildflowers. Wildlife like river otters interact with their natural habitat. And, of course, people are and always have been a part of the environment too. They’re an integral component of this live art event, whether by way of real-

time interactions with attendees, or from a historical and cultural consideration of our place in the canyon, with Indigenous connections to the land spanning millennia. Creative catalysts are not static in time. They go back to the ice age and basaltic lava spread that birthed the canyon nine million years ago. They go back to ancestral knowledge of the Tagish First Nation. At the canyon, Tagish Kwan elder Shirley Adamson reflected on these spoken stories in her mother tongue, the surrounding environment inciting recollections stowed away in her memory. They spilled onto her canvas while painting her interpretation of the story The Daughters of the Sun. “In the ways of the people, it describes one element of the two volcanic eruptions of Mount Churchill in the Wrangell Range of Alaska that laid what is known today as the White River Ash over our homelands,” she wrote. In 2017, French mixed media artist Gorellaume created the lar-

gest piece ever produced at Created at the Canyon. His landscape ink drawing depicted an otter in motion, undulating through the curvatures of the Yukon River. New to the Yukon at the time, Gorellaume took the event as an opportunity to interact with the locals,

ated at the Canyon, with her first residency at the inaugural event in 2012. With her artistic background first grounded in oil painting, her medium of choice is now fluid and adaptive to the intricacies of the project at hand. One year at Created at the Canyon, she utilized volunteer passerby as models to mold transparent dress sculptures, mimicking chrysalises, before hanging them in a nearby tree. One of the things that first drew her to Whitehorse in 1996 was the strong sense of community, arts, culture and support of artists that she found in the Yukon. “This culture of supporting artists to do public interactions and consequently to be much more accessible and human and known, it creates the overall arts community,” said Bauberger. ”Having that element of human interaction with art, I think that’s really healthy and that’s something that Created at the Canyon offers, a chance for people to come across working artists and interact with them in an ad hoc and friendly sort of way.”

Looking back on the anniversary

Whitehorse artist Chantel Goodman worked on an acrylic painting at the 2019 Created in the Canyon drawing from their knowledge of the area to help create his piece, which included First Nations stories about the elusive otter. Local artist Nicole Bauberger has participated frequently in Cre-

In 2019, Bauberger worked with local musicians Keitha Clark and Graeme Poile on a project called “Junctions,” a collaboration between the artists as well as with the public. Asking audience members for a phrase describing their impression of the canyon, they would write this on a note strung on a clothesline. These were then taken by the trio and turned into a piece of visual art or a musical composition while guests went for a hike and viewed other artists’ work. “Being able to interact both with the environment as inspiration and the audience’s interpretation to influence what we were creating is such an engaging and wonderful process to be part of,” said Clark. “I really appreciate the opportunity that Created at the Canyon does to facilitate that.” Public interactions inspired by the event even led to two recorded songs on her most recently released album with Graeme Poile, “Now Is a Far Country.” The tracks “Wynne’s Tune” and “Sing Softly the River” both started with the seed of an attendee’s inspiration from Created at the Canyon. All album sales support the Community Outreach Van in Whitehorse. To commemorate the 10 years of creativity with Created at the Canyon, this year Yukon Conservation Society will be calling for 10 artists rather than the usual six. Art pieces will then be exhibited at the Yukon Arts Centre for the month of August, and open to the public to enjoy. n

QUEST FOR WATER

with

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalist, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

The 2021 Yukon River Quest will be happening, come hell or high water … and there will be high water

F

ortunately, because of the Yukon’s relatively low COVID case count and efficient vaccine rollout, many summer events will be able to go ahead this year, but most large annual sporting events will still look different than normal. One such example is this year’s edition of the Yukon River Quest, the world’s longest annual marathon-paddling race. The Yukon River Quest is put on each year by the Yukon River Marathon Paddlers Association (YRMPA), which has been in operation since 1998. Typically, the race involves local, national and international teams, but travel restrictions have forced this year’s race to downsize. “It’s getting to the point where we need to sort out what’s happening with the non-Yukon teams,” explained YRMPA President Peter Coates. “Some will come and quarantine, but many won’t.” At a certain point, it became obvious that international teams would not be able to take part in this year’s race. Many national teams have dropped out as well. Still, there is a chance a team each from Saskatchewan and Manitoba may be able to pull through, which Coates said he hopes to see, as the teams are rivals. This year’s race will be roughly a third the size it normally is and mostly local, with 35 Yukon teams confirmed. Everyone who was signed up for the cancelled 2020 edition was given the option to be carried through to this year. “It’s a shame it’s not back to normal this year,” said Coates.

Scenes from River Quest 2019 “But it’s really important to run the race, even if it’s just locals, to keep the brand alive and so we don’t forget how to do it.” Coates said he recognizes that Yukoners are lucky to be able to participate in events when so many other parts of the country and the world still have much higher pandemic restrictions and even less certainty as to when they will be over. It was difficult to have to tell teams they wouldn’t be able to participate in this year’s race, and also difficult to have to refund the money they had already sent, according to Coates. The uncertainty the YRMPA faced until recently also caused them to scramble to put the race together in a shorter time than usual, but they hadn’t wanted to put in all the organizational work for a race

PHOTOS:Submitted by Harry Kern

they weren’t sure would even happen. “We all feel a little bit rusty this year because normally we sort of have a rhythm,” he said. “We lost that rhythm, and we couldn’t even get on with finding volunteers because we didn’t know what was going to happen.” The amount of snow that managed to stick around into April this year may also have an effect on the river, but that won’t be enough to dissuade the paddlers either. “Come hell or high water, we are having a race,” said Coates. “And it’s definitely going to be high water!” This year’s edition of the Yukon river Quest will take place from June 23 to 26. Is there someone you wish to thank? PHOTO: Michele Genest

On May 11 the rhubarb showed up in my backyard in downtown Whitehorse, heralding a new season of crisps, pies, jams and chutneys.

I

look forward to weeks of roaming the yard, knife in hand, and when I’ve exhausted my own supply, moving into the alleys where it grows exuberantly along the fences. Garden rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) is not an indigenous species in the Yukon; settlers brought it here. (As Yukon biolo-

gist Bruce Bennett once pointed out, a rhubarb patch in the bush is a reliable marker of a former dwelling place.) The indigenous wild rhubarb (Aconogonon alaskanum) grows abundantly in parts of the Yukon, but it’s a different species, a member of the buckwheat family. Though the young stalks and leaves are edible (the leaves of garden rhubarb are toxic to humans) wild rhubarb doesn’t have quite the juicy, crunchy, sour appeal of garden rhubarb. Having a dish of wild rhubarb is like eating your greens, not your dessert. Garden rhubarb is such a good producer the tendency is to just keep harvesting, resulting in a pile-up of chopped rhubarb in bags in the freezer. A hubbub of rhubarb! This year, I’ve figured out what to do with the backlog: roast it. The idea came from a recipe by Posie Brien on the King Arthur Flour baking site. Roasted rhubarb is sweet, tart, rich, slightly

caramelized—an entirely different beast from stewed rhubarb, a rescuer of freezer-burned rhubarb, and the last word in versatile. As Brien says, it can be mixed with yogurt or whipped cream for a quick dessert, layered with custard and streusel in a parfait, dolloped on your morning porridge, or used as a filling in all the old classics—pies, galettes, crisps, squares. When cooked right down until it’s sticky, the texture and even flavour of roasted rhubarb is reminiscent of cooked dates, which suggests, of course, date squares. My mother had a repertoire of three desserts; family treasures she baked over and over again, and one of them was date squares. I went back to her recipe, actually her Mom’s recipe—I can still see Granny’s handwriting on the stained blue card—and adapted it to my new favourite rhubarb treatment. It worked beautifully. cont’d on page 13 ...

A hubbub of rhubarb ... cont’d from page 11 OATMEAL MIXTURE Ingredients • 2 2/3 cups quick cooking oats* • 1 1/3 cups brown sugar • 1 1/3 cups cake and pastry flour • 1 1/3 tsp baking soda • 1 cup butter RHUBARB FILLING Ingredient • 1 lb. 4 oz. roasted rhubarb (about 3 cups) *My mother’s/grandmother’s recipe is quite specific: the oats must be quick-cooking in order to get the right texture in the topping. I’ve tried with rolled oats and it ends up too crumbly. If you only have rolled, whizz them in the food processor a few times until the flakes are a quarter of the original size.

Instructions 6. Preheat the oven to 350F and place a rack in the middle position. 7. Melt butter. Mix oats, brown sugar, flour and soda together in a bowl. Gradually add melted butter to the mixture, stirring all the while. When combined, divide more or less in half. Pat one half into the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan. 8. Drop rhubarb filling by spoonsful evenly over the oatmeal base and smooth with the back of a spoon. Crumble second half of oatmeal mixture over the filling, being careful to cover it well, then gently pat with the back of the knuckles so the topping joins together nicely. 9. Bake for about 30 minutes, until the topping is golden brown. Cool on a rack before slicing and serving. Makes 20 three-inch squares. n

PHOTO: Michele Genest ROASTED RHUBARB Inspired by Posie Brien at kingarthurbaking.com Ingredients • 10 cups rhubarb, fresh or frozen, chopped into ½-inch pieces • 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp granulated or brown sugar, * packed • 1/2 cup low bush cranberries (optional, for colour if your rhubarb is green) Adjust the amount of sugar to your taste, but keep in mind that the rhubarb gets sweeter and sweeter as it cooks. I’ve

found that ¼ cup sugar per cup of chopped rhubarb results in a perfect sweet-tart balance. Granulated or brown sugar can be used interchangeably. Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350F. 2. Defrost frozen rhubarb in a colander set over a bowl, and discard any melt-water that accumulates in the bowl. 3. Toss fresh or thawed rhubarb and cranberries, if using, with sugar and spread out in a 9 x 13 baking dish. 4. Roast for 40 to 60 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes, until all

the liquid has evaporated and rhubarb is just beginning to caramelize at the edges. 5. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature. Store in the fridge for up to two weeks and in the freezer for up to six months. Makes about 3 cups. ROASTED RHUBARB SQUARES

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air.

867 668 7886 NVDLP.COM

Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

Lately there’s been a lot of media coverage about “languishing” and people experiencing stress due to COVID-19 restrictions.

I

hate to admit it, but I think I have finally succumbed to COVID burnout. I managed quite well over the last year, but the late spring and the mountains of snow have taken their toll. It was a long wait to see our field full of snow transform into a temporary pond and the paths on

our rural property turn to mushy, muddy paths. I have finally hung up my snowshoes. I’m seeing fuzzy, grey crocus heads peeking out of the ground and soon they’ll unfurl to reveal their purple petals. At the beginning of the COVID lockdown, we were just moving into the spring season. I had ambitious plans to do more writing, creative activities, gardening, camping and learning new things. I did much of that and felt thankful that I had the time, energy and resources, but as COVID conditions continued, my energy lagged in the last few months. Now I feel unfocused, listless, unmotivated, sometimes irritable and just plain lazy! Unfortunately I seem to have run out of steam. I usually manage to go for daily walks and enjoy the outdoors, but my creative pursuits and the long list of spring-cleaning

tasks lie in wait. With no guests coming for dinner or visiting inside, we seem to have gotten used to the accumulation of items that migrate from our various personal spaces to the dining room table, kitchen counter and entryway. Now that our deck and BBQ are clear of snow, we’ll soon be able to have friends over. Hopefully that will result in us catching the spring-cleaning bug at our house. Will we all be gardening in earnest this year? Perhaps, like me, you’ve started your vegetable, herb and flower seeds, and put in your order for local bedding plants. I bought my seeds in early March to ensure I wouldn’t be caught by the seed shortage like last year. Anyone need some pea seeds? I seem to have a stockpile. Last May when I went to look for manure and peat moss, it was cont’d on page 18 ...

not to be found in the stores. I’ll be sure to get it early this year when it becomes available. I experiment with trying a new veggie or flower variety every season. Last year it was the broccoflower known as Romanesco broccoli. It is bright green and has odd spearlike shapes jutting out across its surface. It’s beautiful and tasty! I’ll have to see what new variety of veggies or flowers attracts me this year. As an older adult, I’m well aware of the changes that are occurring that are out of my control, many of them related to physical changes in my body. Although the physical limitations may result in a slower pace, shorter walking distance and less hill climbing on a bike, I will take whatever opportunity I can to be outdoors moving and using my body as much as I can. Since the campgrounds opened up on May 1, I’ve been looking into exploring more of the Yukon in our camper van. I’ll take my watercolour pencils and do some sketches of wildflowers on the rainy camping days. I’ll take photos to capture the scenery for future collage and water-

Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest The Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society is excited to present its Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest; a territory-wide awareness campaign to encourage Yukon students to be active, healthy and stay hydrated, while reducing plastic waste and its impact on the environment. Every Student, Every Day, established by the Society to help address barriers to student attendance in schools across the territory, is providing all Yukon students with a branded water bottle, donated by Victoria Gold and distributed to Yukon schools by contest partners Air North, Yukon’s Airline and Small’s Expediting Services. All Yukon students received their water bottle at their school and are encouraged to participate in this fun photo contest by submitting a selfie with their water bottle as they go about their favourite activity or hobby. Entrants will qualify to win prizes in three different age categories.

The contest entry deadline is September 30, 2021 and winners will be announced in October. First place winners, in the contest’s three age categories of 5 to 9, 10 to 14 and 15 to 18, will receive an iPad and runner-up winners will receive a gift card from a Yukon business. For contest information and photo submission details, and for more information about Every Student, Every Day, please visit

www.everystudenteveryday.ca

“Every Student, Every Day’s Water Break Photo Contest is designed to encourage our territory’s students to pursue healthy habits, which contribute to increased engagement in learning and school attendance,” says Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society President Tara Christie. “What motivates one student to be healthy and engaged we hope will inspire others as we work together as Yukoners to help address barriers to regular attendance in our classrooms.” “Supporting our students to be active and healthy and translating that into more engaged learning and increased school attendance is extremely important to the Victoria Gold team,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. Yukon students can also participate in the contest without the water bottle by drawing or downloading and printing the Every Student, Every Day logo and displaying it in their photo. Parental supervision and assistance are encouraged for younger Yukoners in photographing their activities.

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work. Visit the “Work For Us” page at vgcx.com/contact/work-for-us/ and send your resume to greatpeoplework@vgcx.com.
