It takes a while, if you haven’t read the eight-page brochure (the second thing to do), to realize that you are looking at an evolving

landscape. It changes over centuries, between the first open scene with the ghostly image of the Rembrandt print hovering over it, until you get to number XXVIII, in which vestiges of the more recent transformations still linger. I wanted to know more about where it all started. There is a small 4x3-centimetres image of the original work in the brochure, but I wanted to see more of that, so I Googled “Rembrandt’s Christ

crucified between two thieves” and printed out one of the images on regular letter paper to get a better sense of the template. Starling made a “copper plate of the exact size of Rembrandt’s print through photo-etching” and then began adding images to the original background, imagining what might take place in the same geographic setting over a couple of millennia. The final image is in the present

Number XXVII shows an undivided street scene, though a man holds a sign that warns “The End is Near.”

In Number XXII, the shape at the right, which has persisted in various stages since XXVI, is shown decaying before fading away

The final image, number XXVIII, shows a divided land

Palestinian territories.” There is a political message embedded in the exhibit: “By drawing on top of Rembrandt’s original work and adding a diversity of imagery, my aim is to show the inherent instability of occupation,” Starling writes. In the timelapse narrative of the exhibition we see “changes in the landscape both real and fantastical: a pile of dogs, a flood, overgrown nature, metamorphizing buildings, and human activity.” The ghostly images of Calvary have largely vanished by the fifth print, and other dominant features come and go. Between XXIII and XXVIII an arch-like shape is sometimes atmospheric, sometimes an actual building, and, finally, a memory.

The brochure is a bit wordy and bears reading a couple of times, in spite of being densely crafted in artspeak. It would have been interesting to hear Starling speak to this work. There was to have been a closing reception and artist talk at some point (TBA on the brochure), but with the KIAC/ Dënäkär Zho building shut tight by the latest COVID-19 outbreak, that future date is problematic. Lana Welchman, KIAC’s Executive. Director, says the gallery is still open for visitors. They are asked to use the main door of the building rather than the gallery door, as this is where the sign-up sheet and COVID-19 supplies are located. The show will be on display until August 6. n

GIVE A DOG A BONE

PART 1

I’ve had some tough times in my life, but fighting a dog over a bone was about the toughest. Pull up a stump and I’ll fill you in.

L

ast fall, my partner Chubby and I got a hankerin’ for some wild meat, so we drove up to the Dempster highway one weekend and bagged a young caribou bull. We’d set camp and had hung the meat on a makeshift cache to drain overnight, but not before frying up half a backstrap. After a fitful sleep, I stepped outside at six in the morning to take a leak and greet the sun. A grizzly bear about the size of a pickup truck was ripping the meat off one of the hindquarters we’d hung. He looked up at me and let out a growl that blew my nose hair back inside my nostrils. I spun completely around and out through the backside of the tent. Not under, but through. “Run!” I yelped. “Bear!” Chubby didn’t even stand up. He just rolled about 10 times toward the truck and into the passenger side like he’d been practicing it for a month. Long story short, we sat there all morning watch-

ing the grizzly gorge himself on our caribou meat. To add insult to injury, he then rifled through our tent, eating what little grub we had left. We ended driving back to Whitehorse with nothing to eat but Cheezies. When we got back, I set my tent in my backyard for that “old homey” feeling. I was making a fire in the woodstove when our husky/ lab cross, Jack, came around the corner with a big moose-bone in his mouth. He was a thief by nature, though you wouldn’t think by looking at him. I got to thinking about all the marrow in that bone and how good it would taste. He plopped himself down and began

to gnaw on the massive femur. I walked over toward him with my hand out, assuming he’d just give it to me, nut in his mind, it was his. He stood up, carried it a ways, then sat down and resumed attending to his treat. We played this game for more than half an hour. I’d walk toward him and he’d get up and move a few feet away. My neighbor was raking his leaves and leaned his chin on the rake to watch the show. I nodded to him, half embarrassed and half pissed off at him for minding my business. At one point, I actually got ahold of the bone, but Jack wasn’t letting go without a fight. We end-

PHOTO: Pixabay ed in a tug-of-war that started by the porch and ended up across the street. “Jack, give me the bone. Jack, give me the f****** bone.” By this time the mailman had parked his

van and was watching alongside my neighbor. My wife was doing the dishes and was now at the window with her mouth wide open. “What are you doing?” She demanded to know. “Trying to get this bone from Jack,” I said. “Why?” “Cause I want to cook it and eat the marrow. “No, give it to him. It’s his.” “No it’s not,” I pouted. “He stole it.” “From who?” “I don’t know, but it’s not his.” “Wow. That’s about the saddest thing I have ever seen,” she said, then turned away. Jack took advantage of my distraction and yanked the bone from my hand and dashed off into the bush. I saw him through the willows. He laid down and went about his gnashing. Will Jack give the bone back? To be continued in the next edition of What’s Up Yukon. n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

ioblitzes are a fun way to get involved in biodiversity monitoring! A bioblitz brings together experts and aspiring citizen scientists for an intensive day of counting and identifying as many species as possible in one day in one location. Each time it happens, we identify new species that have not been found in that location, and sometimes species that have not been found in the Yukon or Canada! We try to do a bioblitz every year in the Yukon, in a differ-

ent location each time. The first bioblitz was at McIntyre Creek in 2015. Since then, there have been Bioblitzes at Carmacks, Kluane Lake, Tombstone Park, Watson Lake and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. This year’s community bioblitz is to take place in and around Dawson City. Some scientists will also be looking at local wetlands and at the alpine environment near the Top of the World Highway. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory was chosen in 2021 because it is the location of the Yukon South Beringia Priority Place Initiative (PPI). This initiative is sort of like a multi-year massive bioblitz that covers the southern half of

the never glaciated Beringia, the oldest landscape in Canada. The PPI takes scientific teams out to some of the unique landscapes in Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory to learn how they function, and how they are changing as the climate heats up and as more and more human activity moves into the area. The other really good reason to do a bioblitz near Dawson this year is that the Draft Dawson Regional Land Use Plan (DRLUP) has just been released, and the Planning Commission is looking for public input and suggestions. Who knows? Finding a new species could change part of the plan! n

veryone in town knows Paris Pick. And if they don’t, she still catches their eye. Over the course of our hour-long interview with Pick on the patio of Wood Street Ramen, she says hello to too many passers-by to count. One older lady even shouts at Pick from the sidewalk that she loves Pick’s style. While she’s grateful for the recognition, Pick admits she hasn’t quite gotten used to it yet. Despite the slight awkwardness she might feel, she has an air of humble confidence about her. She’s genuinely thrilled to have become a face of the local music scene. “I feel like I get put on a pedestal,” she says. “But I don’t know why!” The last few years have brought an upward trajectory for Pick, but nothing like her most recent explosion in popularity has happened before. Her most recent video, for the upcoming album’s title track, currently sits at more than 1,000 views on YouTube and has garnered attention from some of the most prominent music and entertainment media in Canada. Taking advantage of that attention, Pick is working on another video to release, along with a single for the song “I Can’t Help It,” which Pick calls a “romantic, sexy, love song.” She’s enlisted Dan Little to direct and hired a bunch of the dancers from local entertainment company Velvet Antler Productions to act in the video. “It’s an all-girl slumber party,” she says. “We’re trying to make it like the scene from Grease. It’s gonna be hilarious.” To summarize the video more succinctly, Pick says it’s “overthe-top.” This is a theme that permeates Pick’s new work, as she aims to embrace the larger-thanlife pop star persona with which she’s become associated. She isn’t afraid to be a little risqué. “Everyone in Toronto has videos with butts in them,” she says, laughing. “But in Whitehorse, no one has been so bold yet.” Pick released her debut album, Feeling Love, in 2018 and toured

light. Make sure to taste often and adjust the seasoning throughout cooking. PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy

amily Feud Canada wants to represent all of what Canada has to offer in its upcoming competitions. The CBC show is in search of many families, and wants every nook and cranny in the country to be represented, which means families from up north are not just welcome, but encouraged to apply. “We know applying to be on any show is a daunting task but the Family Feud Canada casting process is extremely fun!” said Lindsay Christopher, casting associate producer for Family Feud Canada. “We always remind families that it isn’t a job interview, it’s more like an epic family game night. Embrace the experience and give us a glimpse of what it’s really like to be a part of your family.” Each team will be comprised of five adult (18+) family members

and one alternate, for six applicants in total. Any sort of familial relation can be accepted, for those who have immediate families of fewer than five people, or relatives who just aren’t into it. This means aunts, uncles, cousins, step-siblings, in-laws, and in some circumstances, very close or livein friends can all team up. Before making it to the audition stage, families must complete an online application. According to Christopher, the online application is easy to use and contains questions that are purposely open-ended, leaving room for families’ unique stories. The next stage is a virtual audition, with the show’s producers. “The best part of the audition process is seeing what families come up with,” said Christopher. “Your audition is your time to shine; some families create team uniforms, chants, or choreographed routines! Of course, none of that is mandatory, but we do love to see it!” While the territories are a less populated part of the country, Canada’s north has a unique way of life and sense of community the show’s producers feel would go a long way onscreen. “We are looking to represent all of what Canada has to offer. From

the major cities to the rural communities, a Canadian family is a Canadian family, and that’s what we want, after all,” said Christopher. “The Canadian territories are rich in sites, culture, and history. A family from the Yukon brings all of that and more with them. The Canadian territories are also much different than the prairies, Maritimes, or cities, and we want to hear what makes Yukon so amazing from the people who live there!” Family Feud Canada first aired in 2019 and has produced two seasons so far. Hosted by Gerry Dee, it is Canada’s version of one of the most popular game shows of all time. The possibility of a group of Yukoners appearing on the show is already building excitement for its next season. “Our goal is to feature as many Canadian families as possible, in all of the beautiful ways families can and do exist,” said Christopher. “I could write a list of adjectives like energetic, competitive, humorous, and humble-but most importantly, we’re looking for YOU and all of the wonderful qualities that make your family unique!” To learn more and apply online, visit https://www.cbc.ca/ television/familyfeud. n

Ride for Dad participants burning into Dawson City

Ride for Dad is back for another summer of fundraising and fun

L

ift your kickstands and start your engines--Ride for Dad is roaring into town. One of the Yukon’s most popular fundraisers, Ride for Dad’s annual motorcycle rally helps raise money for prostate cancer research and awareness. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada, according to Health Canada. One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. This year, the fundraiser will be doing the Tagish Loop (a triangle that runs up the Alaska Highway to Jake’s Corners, cuts through Tagish and then swings back to Whitehorse via Carcross). In previous years, the group has gone as far as

Dawson, but they’re sticking close to home this year in order to limit their impact on the communities during the pandemic, says organizer Sean Secord. As with everything, Ride for Dad’s motorcycle rally has been impacted by the social restrictions COVID-19 has made necessary, and this year’s rally will see a lot of the precautions put in place last year, including handwashing, masks in close spaces, and staying “one motorcycle length apart”, says Secord. The Ride for Dad motorcycle rally usually happens in June, but Secord says they decided to delay the event until August, as they did last year, to help protect Yukoners from COVID, which was on the upswing at the time. “We’ve been really fortunate here in the Yukon,” says Secord. “We’re one of the only chapters in the country that has been able to have a COVID-safe gathering.” The fundraiser kicks at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6 at Shipyard’s Park in Whitehorse, with family fun and bike games. Food will be available through food

trucks, which allows people to safely socially distance and serve themselves, says Secord, as well as supporting local businesses. On Saturday, Aug. 7, the relay kicks off with a parade through the downtown at 11 a.m, after which time the riders hit the road and head out. Riders can pre-register on Aug.6. Registration is tiered, starting at $35, although Secord notes that for $65 you also get a t-shirt and other goodies. Registration fees only cover the costs of organizing the ride, he notes. Ride for Dad hopes to raise between $20,000 and $40,000 by ride day, which is consistent with previous years. If you can’t make it out to the official rally, Secord says people can still participate in the “Ride Alone Together” (RAT) rally’s, in which people ride solo to raise money for the group, and riders are encouraged to do that “all summer long.” For more information about Ride For Dad and prostate cancer research and awareness, visit https://ridefordad.ca. n

A star is born ... cont’d from page 7

PHOTO: Archbould Photography across the country to support it. This was her first national tour, though she had played in B.C. before and done smaller westernCanadian runs. The “Falling in Love” tour, as it was dubbed, was a learning experience for Pick, who is confident that touring will start to get smoother from here. “It takes a lot of communication to make it go well,” she says. “You can’t be vague.” That isn’t to say she was illprepared, as she had a firm set of rules pertaining to cleanliness of the band van and communication between members for the duration of the trek. Pick had also learned that it’s crucial to team up with local artists to guarantee some draw in cities where her band might be strangers. “My first tour I messed up and just booked a bunch of shows at random pubs, but I didn’t team up

with any bands,” she says. “Then maybe people would be there, maybe they wouldn’t. Teaming up with other bands, you might make less money, but at least you’ll get a draw, even if they just bring five of their friends.” Pick describes her earlier touring experiences before her crosscountry expedition as “icky,” saying she wasn’t taking her job seriously enough. This time around, with an exhaustive amount of practical experience under her belt, there’s a sense that Pick now operates in a much more professional capacity, seeing her band as just as much a business as it is an artistic endeavour. She’s been at the head of the creative process, writing the songs, conceptualizing the videos and acting as her band’s artistic director, but she’s also at the helm of the business side of things, fil-

ing grant applications, being her own manager and putting up a large sum of money to realize her vision with this project. At the same time, Pick has also taken a less DIY approach with this new record, signing to Ontario’s Care Records and hiring a publicist. The recording process this time around was more enjoyable for Pick than her first record too, as she’s gained more confidence in her songwriting abilities and more assertiveness as a band leader. Pick and her band recorded Hope for the Best with Jim Holland at Green Needle Records. “It’s becoming more organic than Feeling Love, which was more stressful,” she says. “I guess over time, things just get better.” Pick is itching to get back out on tour as well. While she isn’t discouraged, she knows she’ll have to work harder to get her-

self out there once pandemic restrictions are totally lifted, as the touring market will be oversaturated like never before. “There’s a lot of musicians and I feel like the touring circuit is gonna be packed,” she says. “It probably already is. I feel like the higher-level people probably have their fingers in all the pies and they’re just waiting for the door to open.” While the national and international touring markets are tough, Pick recognizes her fortunate position being from the Yukon, a place with a much less competitive culture than Canada’s big-city musical hubs. Here, she can book a show once a month if she wants to and people will always come out, a testament to the supportiveness of the Yukon’s arts community. Like any professional musician,

Pick has had to get used to the rejection that can come with putting oneself out there and trying for as many opportunities as possible. Her method for getting over disappointment is to always have something else to be shooting for—so as not to put all her eggs in one basket. “Just because you don’t get an album grant once doesn’t mean you’re never gonna get one,” she says. “You’ve just gotta reapply.” Pick has given her entire life to her music, making countless sacrifices along the way, but to her, it’s all been worth it, because this is the only thing she wants to spend her life doing. “I could probably own a house by now,” she says. “But I make albums instead.” To keep up with Pick, visit her website, parispickandthepricks. com. n

HEALTHY CORNBREAD This cornbread recipe comes out light, fluffy and golden-brown. It can be enjoyed with chilli, as a side dish to any main course, or just as a snack.

B

elow I provide options for ingredient substitutions, as well as directions, on making it vegan, lower calorie and lower sugar. Ingredients • • 1 cup gluten-free flour blend • 1 cup cornmeal • cup brown sugar • 1 tsp salt • 1 tbsp baking powder • cup melted coconut oil (butter flavoured by Nutiva) • 1 egg • 1 cup coconut milk Instructions: Makes 9 servings. 1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. 2. In a large bowl, mix together all of the dry ingredients. 3. Add the melted coconut oil. While mixing on low, add the egg and coconut milk until everything is mixed together and the batter is smooth. 4. Grease your 9 x 9 glass baking dish with coconut oil. 5. Using a spatula, pour the batter into your greased baking dish. 6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until starting to get golden on top and a toothpick comes out clean.

Substitutions and variations Gluten-free flour substitutions: instead of using a glutenfree flour blend, you could also use any other type of gluten-free

Coconut milk substitutions: instead of using coconut milk, you can use any other type of dairyfree milk.

Make this recipe lower sugar: Instead of cup of brown sugar, you can cut it down to cup and top the rest up with gluten-free flour. Alternatively, to make this recipe sugar-free, replace the entire cup of sugar with glutenfree flour.

Butter-flavoured coconut oil substitutions: Instead of butterflavoured coconut oil, you can use regular coconut oil, a vegan butter substitute, or any other cooking oil of your choice. Brown sugar substitutions: instead of using brown sugar, you can use white sugar, coconut palm sugar, or a low-carb sugar substitute such as Swerve. Egg substitutions: instead of using an egg, you can swap it out for a vegan egg substitute. Cornmeal substitutions: instead of cornmeal, you can use corn flour, polenta, or corn grits. Make this recipe lower calorie/fat: Instead of using cup of melted coconut oil, you can cut it

size, male Border Collie/Lab/ Heeler Mix. He is quite sweet, enjoys being around people and playing and loves pets! Toby is housetrained, knows the basics of obedience but will need an owner willing to work with him on his leash training and socialisation. He would also benefit from an active household - an acreage would be good! He will do well with children, but not other dogs, and it’s unknown about cats. If you are interested in adopting Toby, please fill out an online application at https://humanesocietyyukon.ca/adoptions/dog/toby If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards him Thanks as always! OLD BOLER, OLDER BONES I fell into camping by myself a few summers back.

as my old bones, for sure, but there are a number of similarities. In the Boler, things don’t close like they used to. The same is true of my hands/fingers. The trailer has to level for things to work and I t the time, I was wrest- can totally relate to that. After he went back to The trailer was built in Mani- town, I settled in for my adventoba around 1973. It’s not as old ture. I was a little scared of what I might find out— wary is maybe the better word. I was surprised at how delightful my solo sojourn turned out to be. Part of the joy was just being active, even within the confines of the campsite and campground. The Boler no longer carries water. Everything I do mindlessly and effortlessly at home, like making coffee and cooking and brushing my teeth, is a multistep process. ing your chair to get some rays or shade, while avoiding campfire smoke or mosquitoes. Because of the timelessness of days spent camping, it doesn’t seem to matter. Ever since that summer, I have looked forward to my little camping expeditions. I am not an intrepid senior going out on my own. For me, camping is a “semisolo” experience. I need the help of my husband, family or friends for setting up, with little repayment other than gratitude. I use public campgrounds almost exclusively; we truly are so fortunate in the Yukon. This kind of camping has made me feel more grounded and in touch with myself. I also feel a teeny bit more self-sufficient and confident that I can both relax and get things done. It’s like learning to be a “human being” instead of a “human doing.” There have been some changes since that first summer. The Boler has found a new home within the family, and its new owner is very generous in sharing the Boler. Physically, I have found it harder to get comfortable in some camp chairs. I spend more time getting ankle-turning, knee-wrenching rocks out of the way. My klutz quo-

tient (always high) has increased, to which several pots of coffee and plates of food can attest. But the pleasures remain unabated. The deep quiet of the morning broken only by bird song and the subtle slurp of a feeding fish, the song of the loons, the conversation of ravens, the delighted laughter of children as they catch their first fish, shrieks

from kids brave enough to venture a swim, the crackling of a friendly campfire, and the scratch of my pen on paper. Plowing through a stack of unread books that have long reproached me, reading my Kindle in dimmer light, I feel lighter and happier than I have for ages. Semi-solo camping in the Yukon? Yahoo! n

Water Break Photo Contest The Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society (VGYSES) is excited to present its Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest; a territory-wide awareness campaign to encourage Yukon students to be active, healthy and stay hydrated, while reducing plastic waste and its impact on the environment. Every Student, Every Day, established by VGYSES in 2012 to help improve regular attendance in our territory’s schools, provided all Yukon students with a branded water bottle, donated by Victoria Gold and distributed by contest partners Air North, Yukon’s Airline and Small’s Expediting Services. All Yukon students are encouraged to participate in this fun photo contest by submitting a selfie with their water bottle as they go about their favourite activity or hobby. Entrants will qualify to win prizes in three different age categories.

The contest deadline is September 30, 2021 and winners will be announced in October. First place winners, in the contest’s three age categories of 5-9, 10-14 and 15-18, will receive an iPad and runner-up winners will receive a gift card from a Yukon business. For contest information and photo submission details, and for more information about Every Student, Every Day, please visit www.everystudenteveryday.ca

“Every Student, Every Day’s Water Break Photo Contest is designed to encourage our territory’s students to pursue healthy habits, which contribute to increased engagement in learning and school attendance,” says VGYSES President Tara Christie. “What motivates one student to be healthy and engaged we hope will inspire others as we work together to help improve regular attendance in our classrooms.” “Supporting our students to be active and healthy and translating that into more engaged learning and increased school attendance is extremely important to the Victoria Gold team,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. Yukon students can also participate in the contest without the water bottle by drawing or downloading and printing Every Student, Every Day’s logo and displaying it in their photo. Parental supervision and assistance are encouraged for younger Yukoners in photographing their activities.

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine located northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work.
