125 YEARS OF GOLD In celebration of 125 years since the discovery of gold in the Yukon, the Commissioner of Yukon is putting on a series of commemorative activities

2

021 marks 125 years since the discovery of gold in the Yukon, the event that kickstarted what is arguably the most famous period of the territory’s history. In 1896, three prospectors (George Carmack, Skookum Jim and Dawson Charlie) originally spotted gold on Bonanza Creek. Only two years later, the Klondike Gold Rush was at its peak, with thousands of prospectors journeying up north in hopes of finding riches. To celebrate 125 years since the initial discovery, Commissioner of Yukon, Angélique Bernard, is presenting a series

of

commemorative

activities,

including a Commissioner’s Picnic and a new exhibit at the Taylor House. The Taylor House, located at 412 Main St., unveiled its exhibit on June 1, displaying photos and articles about the discovery of gold. Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibit on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Masks are mandatory when inside. One interesting component of the exhibit is a letter from 1926 explaining Skookum Jim and Dawson Charlie’s involvement in the original gold discovery, for which only George Carmack, a white American man and cont’d on page 3 ...

his mango avocado salsa recipe is a blend of both salsa and guacamole recipes with the addition of fresh diced mango. It is perfect for eating with fish or beef tacos, or even just with corn chips as an appetizer. Ingredients: • 3 medium avocados (ripe) • 2 small mangoes (ripe) • ¼ cup diced red onion (roughly ¼ of a small onion) • 2 fresh garlic cloves • ⅓ cup diced cilantro • 1 lemon • 1 small tomato • ½ tsp salt Instructions: Makes roughly 6 servings.

1. Make sure your avocados and mangoes are fresh and ripe before you make this recipe. 2. Cut your avocados in half. Remove the pits and squeeze the flesh out into a large bowl. Using a fork, mash up the avocado until it is mostly smooth. 3. Cut your mangoes and remove the pits. Dice up the mango and add it to the bowl. 4. Dice up the onion, garlic and cilantro. Add them to the bowl. 5. Cut your lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a small dish, making sure to remove the seeds before pouring into the bowl. 6. Add salt and mix everything together thoroughly. 7. Keep your mango avocado salsa in the fridge until ready to serve, and serve as quickly as possible after you make the dish. Avocados tend to brown quite quickly.

I figured that if I fashioned a snare at the end of a hockey stick, I could get close enough to snare the bone.

I

found an old hunting jacket that was perfect for cover. For insurance, I rubbed old wood soot into my face and hands. I walked past Jack like I couldn’t care either way if he had the bone or not. I even snubbed my nose at him for effect. When I was out of sight, I dropped to my stomach and started crawling toward him. My daughter, Juniper, and her little friend came bounding down the trail towards their fort which was off in the bush. They stopped dead in their tracks when they noticed me. I motioned with my finger over my mouth for them to be super-duper quiet. They sat on the ground and giggled silently.

Between shushing the girls and trying not to be detected by Jack, it took me a good 15 minutes to get within striking distance. I was so close I could hear him slobbering over the bone. I ever so slowly positioned my snare about six inches from the bone, and when Jack turned to see what the motion was, I snared it and jumped up in victory. The girls clapped. “What are you gonna do with it?” Juniper asked. “Eat it,” I said triumphantly. “Gross,” she said. Then they skipped away towards their fort. I instructed my son Hayden to put Jack in the house and not let him out, then sawed the bone into six-inch pieces and threw them in a pot of boiling water on top of my woodstove. I made a batch of frying pan bannock and boiled up a good pot of tea. If you’ve never eaten hot bannock and marrow, you haven’t lived a life worth talking about. I took the bones out when they were cooked and blew the marrow out onto a plate. I broke off a piece of hot bannock and gobbed a spoonful of marrow on top. I

actually had my mouth open when Hayden called from the house. “Dad, you got a phone call” “I’m busy” “It’s CBC. They want to hear your story about the grizzly bear.” Now, for a guy like me who’s in showbiz, you gotta take advantage of these opportunities. So I put down my food and set it on the table and went in to give a very detailed account of our grizzly encounter. I took a few more minutes to, as us storytellers say, to “put a little salt on it,” embellish the story if you like. After some hearty laughs on both ends, I bid the host farewell and headed back outside to my waiting meal. “Why’s the door open?” I asked Hayden. “Jack had to pee.” I dashed out the door. Jack was halfway out the tent with a mouthful of bannock and snoutfull of marrow grease when he saw me. He beelined it for the bush with me hot on his tail. Long story short, Jack got his revenge on me and I learned a very useful lesson; never steal a bone from a dog. ■

WALKING TOGETHER

with

Saba Javed Saba Javed is a Whitehorse-based writer.

The artist at work

Janet Patterson, August’s Jenni House Artist Resident, on the art of long walks

T

his month, you can walk among others at Jenni House, a historic artist studio located at Shipyards Park. The most recent recipient of the Jenni House Residency is Janet Patterson, an emerging multimedia visual artist whose work is focused on the history of

the land we travel on. For years, Patterson has travelled well-trodden routes around the world. On these trips, she’s reflected on the stories of those who travelled the same paths, decades and centuries before her. Along parts of northwestern Spain, carved out by the chronicled pilgrimage route of Camino de Santiago, Patterson walked by ancient homes, buildings and relics dotting the route, each with their own memories. In Turkey, she walked 400 kilometres along the Lycian Way and was moved by the rich histories along her trek.

Over the phone, Patterson reflected on what these walks meant to her in the years before she became a full-time artist. “When I walk, it’s a chance to think. When you’re walking for that long, there isn’t anything else to do but be alone with your thoughts.” An emerging artist, Patterson began practicing with mixed medium art just three years ago. Much of it was informed by what she contemplated on these walks. “There’s an energy left behind when you walk along the same path that thousands of others have walked before you.”

This energy is what Pattersont hopes to translate into her latest piece as she brings her work to a new space at Jenni House. For Patterson, who took part in the Created at the Canyon event earlier this year, working ‘en plein air’ in the Yukon brought back memories of walking abroad. Like the Camino de Santiago and Turkey, Kwanlin Dün territory has its own history of trails worn down, and the memories of people imprinted onto this land. At the Canyon, Patterson began her project to document the overlapping of travel on Kwanlin Dün land, encouraging

PHOTOS: Courtesy of Janet Patterson visitors to imprint their shoes on the canvas with paint. To accompany this piece, she worked with found objects (namely wasp nests) to create shoes placed on the finished canvas. Patterson’s work at Jenni House will be similar, but a larger production. She hopes to capture footprints over the entire month of her residency and make a larger number of shoes using different and new material, from scoby to birch. Because her piece is particularly inspired by Yukon landscapes, the piece will also reflect those we share the trail cont’d on page 7 ...

She plans to imprint these alongside the footprints of visitors. For Patterson this residency is a chance to explore in a studio space, without the daily

BUCATINI WITH SARDINES AND OLIVES

B

ucatini with sardines and olives is vaguely puttanesca-ish, but somehow even more simple. You can make this dish in the time it takes to cook pasta, it uses all pantry ingredients, and it goes incredibly well with light red wine. This is the ideal dish for any busy Wednesday night. Serves 2 PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy

INGREDIENTS ❑ 250 grams bucatini ❑ ❑ 2 tbsp olive oil ❑ 2 garlic cloves, sliced ❑ 2 cans sardines in oil ❑ ½ cup halved olives ❑ 2 tbsp butter ❑ Salt and pepper, to taste ❑ Chili flakes Sardines and garlic

L

ast spring, when COVID-19 put the kibosh on indoor performance, the Guild Hall was prevented from fulfilling its purpose: to present live theatre to the community. In response, Guild staff and volunteers created an outdoor venue. Long-time volunteer Al Loewen built a stage out of old wood. Then he fashioned pod seating (audience islands) out

of old set pieces. Within this makeshift outdoor theatre, the Guild put on a series of shows. In the midst of a pandemic autumn when nothing much was happening, ‘Round Back was a hit. “I’m really excited that it’s become a thing,” says Brian Fidler, artistic director of the Guild. “It was a response to COVID, and it was popular, and we saw that it could have a life beyond just a temporary fix that it started out as.” While all of the “audience islands” collapsed under the

weight of Whitehorse’s record snowfall last winter, the Guild folks are ever resourceful. They took the wood that was used for the set in their spring production, Dreary and Izzy, and made new roofs for the pods. The venue also has a brand new stage courtesy of Austin Roe, who Fidler describes as a “carpenter, Jack-of-all-trades, Renaissance man.” Kilrich Building Centres donated everything on the Guild’s materials list for the project. Meanwhile, Fidler and his family cleaned up the carpentry shop, which serves as a green room for performers. Now,

there’s a place for them to sit and hang out. Next up was financial support. “We’re excited that we got some really awesome funding from Great Yukon Summer,” Fidler says, referring to a Yukon government funding program. One funding requirement is to keep the programming accessible so the Guild is keeping ticket prices low, at only $11 a show. Kids’ programming was all free. With the new and improved venue in place, Fidler set out to curate a series of performances.

Here’s what’s up for ‘Round Back 2021:

Week 1 – August 4-8 The series kicked off on Aug. 4 with Blues Cargo, an all-star band comprised of Manfred Janssen, Bob Hamilton, Rocky Bergman, Jimmy Salt and Annie Avery. Next up was an evening of storytelling with Ivan Coyote who, Fidler says, “if I’m not mistaken … went to daycare at the Guild when they were a little kid.” cont’d on page 13 ...

A staged read of Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play performed at ‘Round Back 2020. Left to right: Odile Nelson, Brandon Wicke and Austin Roe Kids’ programming filled the first weekend. The Yukon Theatre for Young People performed two nights of Broadway hit songs. Claire Ness performed “music for the kiddos” at a matinée, and Drag Queen Storytime’s Jolene Queen Sloan (Prianshu Grover) read children’s books.

Week 2 – Aug. 11 to 14 Ryan McNally and his band are first up for week two, with music inspired by the southern US – a mix of New Orleans jazz and country blues. McNally is followed by two nights of comedy, starting with the Yukon Comedy Collective on Wednesday with Connor Boyle, Richard Eden, George Maratos, Steve McGovern and Reid Vanier. It’s an all-women bill for the Guild Comedy Night. The night offers a “pretty amazing lineup of people” including Sharon Shorty, Emilie Lefrançois, Jenny Hamilton, Steph Aubé and Brenda Barnes.

Week Three – Aug. 19 to 21 The Guild Storytelling Night happens Thursday, Aug. 19. It features performances from folks who participated in the Guild’s storytelling workshop this summer. Café des Voix is next with two nights of song. The many vocalists will be singing “lunar tunes” and songs from musical theatre. They’ll be accompanied by Two Piano Tornado, aka Grant Simpson and Annie Avery.

Week 4 – Aug. 25 to 28 The final Wednesday features singer and emerging songwriter Brigitte Jardin. Jardin will be backed by the City Slickers, including Lonnie Powell, Bob Hamilton and Lorène Charmetant. ‘Round Back wraps up with three nights of the Thumbs Up Good Work Theatre Collective featuring Sara German, Colin Wolf and Sydney Wolf. “They’re just such a dynamic group, I’m always excited by what they’re going to put together,”

Fidler says. Although Fidler curated the series, he says that “it’s always a collaboration in putting these together.” Fidler relies on the Guild general manager Brandon Wicke to get the venue ready and look after the tech side of things. Production manager Odile Nelson takes care of all the marketing. “I feel like we’ve been in a relationship in the last year and a half,” Fidler says, referring to the trio’s efforts to stay afloat through a pandemic. And it’s not quite over yet. Although restrictions are loosening, by its very construction ‘Round Back offers physically distanced seating. Plus, it’s outside. “It’s a good starter venue for getting people back to watching live performance,” Fidler says. ■

IDIOMS THAT IRK ME (AND I’M NOT EASILY IRKED) There are two idioms that have been bothering me for weeks, months even. But let’s talk about something more pleasant—cookies.

, like so many others, enjoy a good cookie. What’s a good cookie? Well, it depends on your taste buds. I recently made a keto cookie. No sugar. Healthy. My idea of a good cookie. But I really hate it when cookies crumble (don’t you?), which brings me to the somewhatoffensive idiom, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. It’s thought to have originated with a news headline when a Girl Scout from Bend, Oregon, was conned out of her cookies. Why so irksome? Well, this idiom seemed relatively harmless before the virus that reared its ugly, spiked head and, in so many ways, caused us to feel somewhat powerless, or at least somewhat anxious. Unknowns can do that. They can be unsettling. Once I used this idiom to describe what seemed to be (choke) the “new normal.” But now it has this defeatist, almost fatalist ring to it. Saying “that’s the way the cookie crumbles” feels like waving a white flag and I refuse to surrender. I refuse to use descriptions such as new normal, in fact. I hated those words from the first time I heard them and using this “cookie” idiom would seem to cast this misery in stone, which brings us to the second irksome idiom: cast in stone. A phrase apparently heard

Individual cuts of grass-fed beef, pork, elk, bison, veal, goat, chicken and lamb. All raised on Yukon farms, vacuum packaged, and frozen. PHOTO: Pixabay as early as the 1500s, it was used to refer to anything that was cast, from sculptures to headstones. Why is this one so irksome? Because if that’s the way the cookie crumbles then, dear God, it may really be cast in stone, which means we really would have to wave our white flags and proclaim defeat because nothing would be able to change or stop this virus and the misery it has inflicted upon the human race. Our fate would be immortalized, an epitaph for all to see. Some of us may have breathed a collective sigh of relief as the two mRNA vaccines landed in Can-

ada, even with the unexpected (expected?) slower rollout. There is hope. Hope that life may once again return to “normal,” that we will live and dream and dance and hug again. That life will once again be brimming with possibility. In a sense, perhaps our normal will be new—a new beginning, a new path forward. But, to digress, I have developed quite a disdain for both of these idioms. I have dropped them from my conversations, just as one would in the childhood game of Hot Potato, and I will never use them again. Thank God this is not the way

the cookie crumbles. And it is not cast in stone. That said, here’s to the old that we miss and the new that we look forward to! ■

WHAT’S ON FOR YUKON RIVERSIDE ARTS FESTIVAL 2021? Yukon Riverside Arts Festival will take place this year in Dawson City from August 13-15

T

his summer hasn’t come without its slew of cancellations and postponements of various festivals and events around the Yukon, but as cases decrease, things are looking up for Dawson City’s Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, scheduled to take place this August. From Aug. 13 to 15, the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture (KIAC) is presenting the 21st annual edition of the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, and while it will look different than in previous years, the team behind the festival is very excited to

be able to put on an in-person festival and support artists who have struggled throughout the pandemic. “As we start emerging from a very difficult time for many in the arts sector, we are excited to be able to support and showcase talented Yukoners,” said Lana Welchman, executive director of KIAC in a press release for the festival. “We’re very excited to once again welcome locals and visitors to the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, in a manner that ensures the safety of our communities.” To cooperate with local public health guidelines and accommodate physical distancing among festival-goers, the festival has been adapted for this year into a series of exhibits and events in several venues across Dawson City. The decentralized approach will encourage audiences to enjoy the various forms of artwork being displayed and presented

large groups. The mediums of art presented in the festival will include film screenings, performances and visual installations. For over two decades, KIAC has invited creators of all kinds of art to take part in the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, always ending up with a wide array of art styles and mediums included in the events and exhibitions. This year, a call was put out to artists, creatives and collectives to submit their work to be juried by early July. Those who had their work selected for inclusion in the festival also receive online promotion from KIAC and spots in an online exhibition of all artwork from the festival. This year’s edition aims to take lessons learned from last year’s trial run of a curated virtual experience and expand on it, bringing back smaller-scale in-person events and exhibitions,

but also relying on online content for those who are not able to attend physically. KIAC was formed in 1999 after a group of local artists who were passionate about arts education in the north started the Dawson City Arts Society (DCAS) and set about working towards opening an arts centre to facilitate the creation and teaching of all kinds of arts. Since the turn of the century, KIAC has been serving the Yukon’s artistic community, presenting festivals, events, workshops and residencies, as well as launching the Youth Art Enrichment program, an annual art intensive for high school students interested in pursuing the arts. To learn more about the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival and check out their online content, visit yraf.ca. To keep up with KIAC’s programming, visit the organization’s website at kiac.ca. ■

Water Break Photo Contest The Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society (VGYSES) is excited to present its Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest; a territory-wide awareness campaign to encourage Yukon students to be active, healthy and stay hydrated, while reducing plastic waste and its impact on the environment. Every Student, Every Day, established by VGYSES in 2012 to help improve regular attendance in our territory’s schools, provided all Yukon students with a branded water bottle, donated by Victoria Gold and distributed by contest partners Air North, Yukon’s Airline and Small’s Expediting Services. All Yukon students are encouraged to participate in this fun photo contest by submitting a selfie with their water bottle as they go about their favourite activity or hobby. Entrants will qualify to win prizes in three different age categories.

The contest deadline is September 30, 2021 and winners will be announced in October. First place winners, in the contest’s three age categories of 5-9, 10-14 and 15-18, will receive an iPad and runner-up winners will receive a gift card from a Yukon business. For contest information and photo submission details, and for more information about Every Student, Every Day, please visit www.everystudenteveryday.ca

“Every Student, Every Day’s Water Break Photo Contest is designed to encourage our territory’s students to pursue healthy habits, which contribute to increased engagement in learning and school attendance,” says VGYSES President Tara Christie. “What motivates one student to be healthy and engaged we hope will inspire others as we work together to help improve regular attendance in our classrooms.” “Supporting our students to be active and healthy and translating that into more engaged learning and increased school attendance is extremely important to the Victoria Gold team,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. Yukon students can also participate in the contest without the water bottle by drawing or downloading and printing Every Student, Every Day’s logo and displaying it in their photo. Parental supervision and assistance are encouraged for younger Yukoners in photographing their activities.
