There will be a Dawson City Music Festival this year, smaller and later than usual and with quite a few changes, but it will take place from September 10 to.12. It’s still a three day event, but bite sized.

Folk enjoying the sunshine in Minto Park between sets during DCMF 2019 There will be no big tent this year vided a historical overview. “The Dawson City Music Festival has faced an abundance of obstacles in its 40+ year history: forest fires threatening to halt attendees en route to Dawson City; foggy afternoons of low visibility leaving planes full of performers nearly stranded mid-air; unplanned power outages catapulting the Mainstage into an acoustic chorus of chanting and singing (thankfully only temporarily), to name a few. “’Worldwide pandemic’ was certainly not on the radar, but like all arts and music organisations, the Association has had to adapt and plan the best, prepare for the worst, and everything in between. “The 2020 Festival was cancelled due to logistical impasses

related to COVID-19, but this year, DCMF will present a ‘miniature Festival’, a call-back to it’s humble grassroots beginnings.” Nothing will be happening at the traditional Minto Park venue and there will be no beer garden. The mini-festival will be held at the Waterfront Park Gazebo during the day (or at the KIAC/Dënäkär Zho building if the weather is bad) and at the Palace Grand Theatre, operated by Parks Canada Klondike National Historic Sites during the evenings. Both indoor venues have already proven themselves capable of being COVID-29 friendly. “Patrons can expect to see significant COVID-19 safety measures,” says producer Andrea Vincont’d on page 3 ...

In a press release DCMF offers a batch of thank yous to the Government of Yukon, Government of Canada, City of Dawson, Parks Canada (Klondike National Historic Sites), Klondike Institute of Art & Culture, Klondike Visitors Association, Yukon Arts Centre, Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, Something Shows, and Wonderhorse. DCMF would also like to extend recognition to Air North, Yukon Brewing, and the many Yukon businesses and organizations who have continued to support the Association throughout the years. Fans are advised to visit www. dcmf.com for a schedule and tickets to the 2021 Dawson City Music Festival performances at the Palace Grand Theatre. The Hän Singers have opened the weekend for a number of years. No word on this year yet cent, “including mandatory masks at indoor venues, bubbled and distanced seating, sanitization protocols, and more, subject to Yukon Government regulations. “In addition, broader measures have been put in place by the DCMF Association to ensure public safety, including further limiting venue capacity and offering no food or beverage service at any event.” While the festival usually offers talent from all across the nation, this year’s event will concentrate on Yukon performers; among them Hip Hop duo LOCAL BOY, indie folkrocker Drea Naysayer, soulful folkpunk musician Calhoun, Gwich’in fiddle and old-time country western band Uncle Jimmy & The Hammerstones, and multi-instrumental songwriter Erica Mah, and more. “The bite-sized Festival will also include several visiting artists, thanks to a partnership with Yukon

ooking for fun for the whole family? Head on down to the waterfront for the first-ever Street Eats and Beats Cultural Fes-

tival, hosted by the City of Whitehorse and the Yukon Arts Centre. The festival, which runs Sept. 9 through Sept. 11, is an expansion of the popular Street Eats Festival of previous years, which saw a host of offerings from the city’s many food truck vendors all in one convenient location. This year’s festival will still offer a smorgasbord of tasty treats,

with the added bonus of live music with Dena Zagi, Gordie Tentrees, Kevin Barr and Boyd Benjamin and family-oriented events, including art installations by Nicole Bauberger, buskers, drumstick making with Dennis Shorty and a historical tasting tour. “Besides providing fun for all, festivals offer a host of economic and social benefits, foster community pride, strengthen relationships and bring communities together. This festival could not have come at a better time for us,” Dan Curtis, City of Whitehorse Mayor, said via press release. “YAC is so excited to be partnering with the City of Whitehorse for the Street Eats and Beats Cultural Festival. After enduring the difficulties of the pandemic, this will be an amazing opportunity for Yukoners to come together and celebrate our community through food, music, dance and art. We can’t wait to provide our community a safe space to celebrate all along the waterfront,” said YAC director of programming Michele Emslie. Things kick off on Thursday, Sept.9, at Shipyards Park, which will be hosting the final Fireweed Market of the 2021 season, and then there’s a children’s festival at the south end of the river at the Visitor Information Centre on Friday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Emslie says. There’s also an arts market outside of the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre on Saturday, and food trucks at Shipyards all Friday and Saturday. The mainstage will have music and entertainment from local performers, but Emslie says there might also be “some surprises.” Starting a new festival during a Pandemic sounds like a daunting task, but Emslie says it’s gone “recont’d on page 5 ...

CASSAVA FLOUR CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES These are soft, chewy treats

bit soft, but will firm up once cooled.

- FAQS -

T

Where to find the ingredients for this recipe Most of the ingredients in this recipe are commonly known and easy to find, but here are a few suggestions to find items you may not have heard of, or seen before. Cassava flour, coconut oil, coconut palm sugar, and dairy and soy-free chocolate chips can be found in the natural foods/glutenfree aisle at most grocery stores, as well as at natural health food stores in town.

Coconut oil: I suggest using Omega nutrition coconut oil because it is essentially flavourless and makes a fantastic substitution for seed, or vegetable-based oils. You can also use other coconut oils, but be aware that you may be able to taste the flavour of coconut in your cookies if you use a full-flavoured (extra virgin, cold-pressed) one. If you prefer using butter, you can also use vegan butter, or regular cow’s milk butter if you tolerate dairy. Brown sugar: If you don’t have brown sugar, you can swap it out for granulated cane sugar, or white table sugar. If you prefer to use a more natural sugar, you can swap out the brown sugar for coconut palm sugar. This is actually quite similar in flavour and texture to brown sugar.

How do you make your cookies more moist and chewy? The trick to making cookies more moist and chewy is to make sure they have a sufficient amount of fat and liquids. If your cookie dough seems dry, you will get a harder, more crumbly cookie. It’s also important to not overcook your cookies. You’ll want to take them out of the oven when they still look a bit soft. They always harden up a bit once they cool.

hese cassava flour chocolate chip cookies are soft and chewy, just like you’d expect from a classic chocolate chip cookie, but they’re made without the grains, gluten and dairy. Of the friends I’ve shared them with, everyone has said they can’t even tell the difference!

What is cassava flour? Cassava (yuca) is a starchy root vegetable (also known as a tuber) and is popular in many areas of Africa, Asia and South America. Cassava root is dried and ground into a flour that is very similar to white flour, and is used often in grain and gluten-free baking.

PHOTO: Tara Klippert cipe I did not melt the coconut oil completely. The cookies ended up being a bit dry and crumbly (even though they still tasted amazing). Using melted coconut oil or butter will ensure your cookies turn out super soft and chewy, with a consistency that matches the taste in quality. Make sure your cookies are uniformly shaped: Roll the dough for each cookie in your hands and make a small uniformly-sized ball. Place each ball on the parchment paper-lined baking sheet and press down on each ball to flatten the dough out a bit. This will ensure your cookies are the same size and shape when they come out of the oven. Equipment you will need: • Stand mixer or hand mixer • 2 baking sheets • Parchment paper • Oven Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups cassava flour • 1 cup brown sugar (or coconut palm sugar) • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp salt • 3/4 cup melted coconut oil • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 2 room temperature eggs • 3/4 cup chocolate chips (dairy and soy-free)

Instructions 1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F 2. Combine all dry ingredients (except chocolate chips) in stand mixer. 3. Sift dry ingredients together with a spoon or fork. You can do this in the stand mixer, but go slowly because the cassava flour may go flying since it’s so light! 4. Add all remaining liquid ingredients to the stand mixer bowl. *It is very important that your coconut oil is fully melted, otherwise the dough will end up dry and crumbly. Your eggs should be room temperature otherwise they may cause your coconut oil to harden up. If your eggs are still cool from the fridge, mix your melted coconut oil into the dry ingredients first and then add the eggs afterwards while continuing to mix. 5. Mix everything together in your stand mixer until smooth, with no chunks remaining. 6. Pour in the chocolate chips last. Mix until they are evenly distributed in the dough. 7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and form 18 portions of cookie dough onto the baking sheet. 8. Bake for roughly 18 minutes, checking after 15. Cookies will be starting to brown around edges and will still appear a

Is cassava flour good for baking? Cassava flour is excellent for baking because it is very similar in texture and starchiness to white flour. It can be swapped out in recipes pretty much 1-to1 which makes it an easy substitute. If you are using it in recipes instead of white flour, start with 3/4 cup cassava flour for every 1 cup of white flour the recipe calls for. If the dough or batter seems too wet, gradually increase the amount of cassava flour (up to the full 1 cup) until you reach the desired consistency. Is cassava flour healthy? Cassava flour is a healthy substitute to white flour because it’s free of nuts, grains, wheat and gluten. This makes it an excellent alternative for people with food allergies and sensitivities. It is suitable for anyone following a gluten/grain-free, paleo or autoimmune paleo diet. Calories: 234 Carbohydrates: 25.5g Protein: 1.4g Fat: 13.5g Fiber: 1.3g Show me your feel good food! On a stop at the Marsh Lake dump the other day, I safely disposed of six full or partly-full canisters of bear spray.

E

ach had been on the shelf at our cabin for too many years. That sounds extravagant, but bear sprays usually have a “best by” or “expiry date” date on them and really should not be counted on after that date. They may still be good, but who wants to learn they don’t work while facing a bear? Sure, you could test them, but the regular-sized container has only eight seconds of spray to start with and that is diminished with each test. The problem isn’t that the eye-watering content weakens over time, it is the fail-

ure of the rubber “O” ring seal between the contents and the trigger. It simply deteriorates over time and the propellant leaks out without you being aware. It may still feel all or partly full but it won’t work. It is wise to replace them at the expiry date. New replacement sprays are not really inexpensive but it’s never been wrong to have some insurance against unwanted experiences in life. Bear sprays look like they are fairly resilient and not easy to damage but the plastic trigger mechanism at the top is really vulnerable to being broken off in a fall, or by being dropped on a hard surface. It is vital to protect the unit, so a holster should be purchased with the spray. The holster is retained for future use after the spray is discarded. More important, the holster can be attached to your belt or front pack straps to make it handy. The spray should never be carried inside your pack or under any outside garments. Bear attacks are often very swift and you will have no time to dig out your spray. n

PLEASE REMEMBER: ■

• Standard bear spray only lasts eight seconds. • Effective only from five to six metres (the bear must be close). • Any crosswind will force the spray to the side, away from the bear. • A wind in your face will bring the spray back to you. • The spray must be directed to mucous membranes ie: eyes, nose, mouth. • It is not a deterrent. Don’t spray your tent, gear or yourself. • If flying, advise the pilot that you have bear spray. • Learn bear avoidance strategies. • Grizzlies and black bears generally behave differently. Learn to ID bear types. • Always yield to the bear, don’t push the issue.

AT THE DRIVE-IN

with

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalism student, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

This September, Yukoners can experience Canadian cinema and more in a pandemic-safe drive-in theatre setting

W

atching a movie at a drive-in theatre isn’t just a nostalgia trip; it’s also one of the safest and easiest ways to enjoy cinema during a pandemic. This is why the Yukon Film Society (YFS), in cooperation with the Yukon Arts Centre and Whitehorse Street Food Festival, and with help from CJUC and the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC), is presenting two nights of drive-in movies in Whitehorse and Carcross this September. It’s part of the Government of Yukon’s Great Yukon Summer programming. After a successful run of drivein movies last summer, YFS decided to have another crack at it this year, as Whitehorse’s public movie theatres are still closed and the window during which the weather allows for outdoor movie screenings in the Yukon is incredibly small. Much of the content moviegoers will be able to see this year

is Canadian-made, including some shorts by Canadian filmmakers. These will be screened before feature films. According to YFS artistic director, Andrew Connors, YFS has always played a prominent role in bringing Canadianmade and Indigenous-led content to Yukoners. “Canadian cinema often gets short shrift in the distribution world,” Connors said. “An important part of our role as an exhibitor of films and media art is championing the voices of Canadian creators. Even when the commercial cinemas were open here, it was very rare that a Canadian film could be seen on screen there.” Connors has been an independent filmmaker himself for over 25 years and has been involved in lots of film festival organizing and pop-up movie projects around the Yukon throughout his career. He said there are challenges with any project. Putting together a series of film screenings is always a lot of work. Luckily, the pandemic didn’t make the logistics of staging a pop-up drive-in cinema too much more difficult. “It’s a really great presentation format during a health pandemic, so I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of extra work,” said Connors. “Yukoners in general are pretty good about maintaining physical

distancing, but we’ll have lots of volunteers to manage that.” The feature films being screened as part of these events include 202 Pixar movie Soul,

Wow,

as well as the 2000 Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Also featured will be two Canadian feature films. One is a documentary called You Are Here:

A Come From Away Story, which is about the making of the Broadway musical Come From Away. The other is Beans, an award-winning, Canadian-made, coming-of-age drama centering on a 12-year-old Mohawk girl during the Oka crisis of 1990, when an Indigenous uprising created massive tensions between Quebec and Canada for a turbulent 78 days. “It’s a really powerful film,” Connors said of Beans. The film screenings in Whitehorse will take place Sept. 10 and 11, with the wall of the public library as the screen. The second night will include a free screening of Beans. The Carcross event, which is free access, will feature Beans and a program of Yukon short films at the Carcross/Tagish Learning Centre. Spaces are limited for all events, so attendees must purchase tickets in advance through the YFS Square Store. For the free screenings, attendees must register through Eventbrite. “To bring cinema outside in a unique atmosphere is always really cool—we’re just generally excited,” said Connors. “It’s a really lovely payoff when there’s a parking lot full of people and they’re just so happy to be having that experience and coming together in a trying time when they haven’t been able to come together and watch movies in a shared experience for quite some time.” To check out the schedule and find tickets, head over to https:// yukonfilmsociety.com/. n

Yukoners lined up around the block for one of 250 seedlings sprouted from the Martha Black Mayday tree outside of city hall, slated to be cut down sometime in 2022 to make way for a new building. The tree was originally abided on First Avenue at the home of Martha Black -- the first Yukon and second Canadian woman Member of Parliament -- but was moved to its present location to honour her memory. Seen here are the members of City of Whitehorse’s hard working parks crew, who lovingly raised and distributed the seedlings, which were all spoken for within 15 minutes.

MEAN OLD WORLD

with

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalism student, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

Gordie Tentrees is set to release his newest album this fall, with a special Whitehorse show to celebrate

O

ut of everything he’s ever recorded, Gordie Tentrees is most happy with his new album. It’s a bold statement to make, but the renowned Whitehorse musician is confident that his upcoming studio effort contains his best work to date. “I think it’s the strongest record I’ve made, for a variety of reasons,” Tentrees said, over the phone from Ontario, where he was on his first tour since before the pandemic began. “I think the songs are really strong and I think the record itself sounds really great because of how it was made.” Rather than chip away at recording over a span of several months, this time around, Tentrees put together a four-piece band with some of his favourite musicians. The group spent one week making the album, titled Mean Old World, which will see its official release Sept. 14. Appearing alongside Gordie on Mean Old World are Bob and Patrick Hamilton, as well as Jaxone Haldane, all of whom played multiple instruments and shared engineering duties. Tentrees said they spent the week making the record “locked in a house,” waking up every day and getting to work. Once the process was finished, there was no going back to re-record or overdub any parts. “The goal was to do it for a week, then walk away from it and not come back,” he said. “That’s art—it is what it is, and it’s done now.” Tentrees said this method was both exciting and nerve-wracking, knowing he wouldn’t get to redo anything he didn’t like, but, luckily, upon hearing the finished product, he couldn’t have been happier, which he credits in a large part to the musicians

he worked with, saying he picked the perfect people for the job. Though he is thankful to have received help with this record from Yukon Media Development, the past year-and-a-half has not been easy for Tentrees where his music career is concerned. Like all working musicians, Tentrees had lots of big plans halted in their tracks—including 140 postponed shows that were meant to take place in 2020. “It’s a bit frustrating, but everyone’s in the same boat,” he said. “Like everyone else, I had to pivot and be creative, and, luckily, we live in the Yukon where we’ve still been able to play music for audiences. Postponing and re-postponing tours is a bizarre thing to do, but it’s the reality that we’re living in.” Tentrees will host an official album release concert at the Yukon Arts Centre on Oct. 20, which, along with Tentrees and his band, will feature the junior division of the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, of which Tentrees’ daughter is a member. The dancers will open the concert. Some members will sing with Tentrees on “Every Child,” a song off the new record. “It’s gonna be a fun show to do,” said Tentrees. Though it was initially strange for Tentrees to have so much free time at home on his hands, spending his first year off the road in well over a decade wasn’t so bad. While he’s happy to finally be out on tour again, he has enjoyed getting to spend more time with his family lately, and said balancing his music career and family life has actually gotten easier as he’s progressed. “I used to think you had to live a certain lifestyle, living on the road and performing 300 days a year for anybody and everybody and that it was this constant race. I felt like a hamster in a wheel,” he said. “Now, I just choose where and when I want to play, and that’s been great for my family because I’m not gone as much as I used to be.” Tentrees said he didn’t know what it would be like to spend more than a year at home for a change, but he’s loved being able to reconnect with the community where he lives. He went as far as to say this was the “blessing” of the pandemic. Coming out of the pandemic, Tentrees aims to continue setting

GREY MATTERS

Susan Clark Susan Clark is a retired Family Physician and still a keen cyclist.

LOSS AND THE ART OF LETTING GO? Last week I said goodbye to my mountain bike.

I

have been an avid cyclist since childhood. I learned to ride at about age 10 on the “family bike,” a genteel, lady’s Raleigh three-speed that had belonged to my mother. As the eldest, I had priority for that bike, and it gave me an unimaginable sense of freedom. About a decade later, the first 10-speed bikes became available at the Canadian Tire store in Kingston, Ontario, where I lived back then. Mine was red with drop handlebars and lever gear changers. I embraced it with enthusiasm. Within a few years, I had begun cycle touring and camping with that bike. My first tour was around Prince Edward Island and I was hooked. Later, it was cycle touring around New Zealand and then Europe. At the start, good panniers

were unavailable in New Zealand, where I was living at the time, so my husband and I copied the Karimore ones of British friends. I did the cutting and sewing; he did the hardware – buckles and racks and so on, as there was no Velcro at that time. We were still using those panniers 30 years later in 2004, touring in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Bikes were a major family transportation as we grew to five. In fact, I biked to work the day before my eldest son was born. He now owns a bike store, go figure! Moving to the Yukon in 2012, I embraced all the opportunities for biking – commuting, road riding, the challenge of the Kluane Chilkat International Road Relay and, finally, mountain biking. I loved all of it. Single track mountain bike riding was a steep learning curve aided by a couple of lessons from a skilled instructor. I’ve had a few falls over these last nine years, but no broken bones or serious injuries. cont’d on page 23...

A HOMECOMING FOR BRANDON ISAAK Brandon Isaak, originally from Whitehorse, is set to return to the North in support of a new record

W

hen he isn’t making music, Brandon Isaak can often be found working on clay sculptures out of his place in Langley, B.C. He says that’s what’s been keeping him busy during the pandemic, but he’s also made a new record, Modern Primitive, which came out in July. The record was born out of a desire to record with upright bassist, Keith Picot, a collaborator of Isaak’s. “We wanted to do a record and we didn’t have long to do it,” says Isaak. “So we just did it live in a day, basically.” Isaak considers himself a perfectionist and says he doesn’t like saying things are “good enough” and leaving them, but found himself having to do that with this record because of the time crunch. “I would like to spend a year making the record, really,” he says. “But the beauty of this is that it is just live and it is done the way an old record would be done, so it does have a real good mojo to it.” Despite the compromises he had to make, Isaak is happy with the record and has been pleased to see positive reception flowing in as well, although he admits the amount of it was a bit surprising. “It’s getting lots of radio play too,” he says. “It’s exciting.” On Modern Primitive, Isaak himself can be heard playing guitar, while simultaneously playing drums with his feet, and singing and playing harmonica. Meanwhile, Picot plays upright bass and does backing vocals. Isaak him-

self is a seasoned blues artist who plays in all kinds of formations, from a solo artist to a member of his five-piece Saints of Swing allstar group. Because he lives and breathes music, there is never a time when he isn’t working on writing new songs. “I always have a bunch on the go,” he says. “Right now, I probably have about 30 of what I’d call solid tunes ready to record.” When it comes time to record a new record, Isaak always finds himself with a large collection of tunes to choose from, and Modern Primitive contains both new songs made specifically for this record, and older ones that hadn’t yet found a home on an album. “There’s a bunch of different ways I go about writing a song,” he says. “Sometimes I’ll just sit with my guitar and play it and sing aloud and let my consciousness come straight through. Once in a while, you say a really cool phrase when you’re doing that and write that down.” Isaak and Picot recorded the album at the historic Hotel Georgia in Vancouver, where they rented the penthouse suite, in which world-famous musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby were known to stay. “All these legends have stayed there, and they used to broadcast big band radio live from up there in the ‘40s,” Isaak says. “It’s a pretty magical place to go and record.” Isaak will be touring up to the Yukon in support of Modern Primitive to perform at the Yukon Arts Centre on Sept. 25. He’ll also be playing in Atlin, B.C. on Sept. 18. Joining Isaak for these northern shows will be local musicians Lonnie Powell on drums and Robert Bergman on bass. To keep up with Brandon Isaak’s music and touring plans, visit his website at brandonisaak.ca. n

Azi is a 2-year-old, female Pitbull Mix who is a smart girl that knows her training basics, like sit and stay, and will require an experienced owner willing to continue her training (eg leash training) and socialization. Azi can be wary of new people at first, especially men, and can be protective of her space, but once she warms up (treats help!) is quite loving and playful! She will be a very loyal and attached pet when she becomes comfortable in her new home. She will do best in an active home, without children or cats, and we are still learning how she is with other dogs. If you are interested in adopting Azi, please fill out an online application at https://humanesocietyyukon.ca/adoptions/dog/azi If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards her.

“... Letting go seems more positive, implies a

choice, an attitude of agency and is a practice for that final letting go that we all face.”

Then, last June, I developed chest pains riding on a challenging single-track trail. And that was the beginning of the end of mountain biking for me. Good medical treatment has allowed me to continue most activities that I want, but it seems mountain biking is not to be one of them. It’s not a type of biking that can be done slowly and cautiously, in my experience. That just ends up in frequent stops, walks and falls. Perhaps an e-mountain bike is in my future, but I have lost the confidence for single track riding. I now ride an e-bike for commuting around town, up Two-Mile Hill and South Access. It’s been a great solution for a biking addict such as myself. However, that brings me to the real topic of this article – loss (I was sidetracked by bikes). Loss

-- Susan Clark becomes a fact of life as one gets older. It probably seems a bit extreme to grieve the loss of mountain biking at age 72. The last 18 months have been a time of many more significant losses for a lot of people. Many have lost relatives, friends and loved ones to COVID. Others have lost jobs, homes, income, social lives, church, travel and hugs. For me, diminishing physical and mental abilities are hard ones. I can no longer play on the floor with my granddaughters for more than a few minutes. I must limit the number of things I try to do in one day, or even one week, in a society that affirms doing lots of activities. I cannot pretzel myself into the yoga poses that I previously did with ease, and I cannot always remember the names of people I meet, or find the word

that I want to say until the conversation is long past. These are things that I just need to let go of. Letting go is a skill that we all need to have sooner or later to get through life with joy and dignity. Loss and letting go are not the same thing, although both include grief. Loss seems to imply a kind of victimhood and can result in anger and resentment. Letting go seems more positive, implies a choice, an attitude of agency and is a practice for that final letting go that we all face. With each letting go there is a little space created where something new can be born. Perhaps the wisdom to “pay attention.” There is time to slow down, listen, and do each thing with deliberateness and mindfulness. The task now is choosing how to fill that space. n

Mean Old world ... cont’d from page 12

priorities for himself, making sure he is still being creative, making music and performing shows, but not allowing the lifestyle to consume him and keep him away from his family and home for overly long periods of time. “I’ve got tours in the works for the next two years all over the place,” he said. “But I’m just taking my time with it; I’ve been enjoying this time out and time to pause. I’m taking my time with how I approach touring in the future, and it’s kind of fun to be more relaxed about it and have less of a sense of urgency like I’m gonna miss something.” One thing Tentrees is doing differently with his new record is making it only available for purchase directly from him—meaning it won’t appear on any streaming services. In fact, Tentrees has also taken all his previous albums off of sites like Spotify and Apple Music, and is now instead directing fans to sources like Bandcamp, where he will actually see some revenue from people purchasing his music, whether digitally or physically. “This is a big thing for me as far as taking a stance and not giving it out for free exposure, which I’ve done in the past,” Tentrees said. “There’s more artists doing that; there’s a big underground movement that hopefully won’t be so underground in a little while, where more artists take back the rights to their music so they can actually make some financial income from creating the content they’re creating.” Tentrees admitted it was a challenge to figure out how to navigate promoting an album that listeners wouldn’t be able to consume for free, but also said the process has ultimately been fulfilling. As for where he hopes this record might take him, Tentrees simply said he hopes a lot of people get to hear it, but being happy with it himself is enough. “I love playing music whether or not I’m doing it in front of an audience.” To keep up with all things Gordie Tentrees and find out how to get your hands on a copy of Mean Old World and tickets for the Whitehorse release show, visit Tentrees’ website at tentrees. ca. n

Careers in the Making Sommer Mervyn First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun citizen Sommer Mervyn, a student enrolled in Yukon University’s Environmental Monitoring Certificate Program, is dedicated to the lands, waters and wildlife within her First Nation’s traditional territory. “It’s so important to keep our traditional territory clean and healthy for future generations as our ancestors did before us,” says Sommer. Originally hired by Victoria Gold as a summer student at the Eagle Gold Mine, her position transitioned to a territorial government-funded program and Sommer is set to work at the mine through the Fall. Raised in Mayo, where she still resides, Sommer has been interested in water issues for the past few years. “I was drawn to the Environmental Monitoring Program to become educated about, and help protect, our lands, our waters and our animals,” continues Sommer. “I really enjoy the hands-on learning aspect of the program, in addition to the classroom instruction portion, and love traveling to different terrestrial areas in the Yukon.” This flexible 10-credit, two-year program prepares students
