he fall is a busy time for pumpkin farmers. Ask Kevin Miles, who owns and operates Miles Produce Ltd. out of Waterford, Ontario. With thanksgiving and Halloween both taking place weeks apart in Canada, as well as scenic autumn weddings and other occasions, pumpkins are in high demand throughout October. But the process of getting pumpkins up to a place like the Yukon starts long before that, when the first pumpkins are planted in May. “There’s a lot of shipping logis-

tics you have to think of,” Miles explained to What’s Up Yukon. “Your pumpkins in the Yukon are most likely coming from B.C., maybe Alberta, maybe even California.” Mile’s farm is located in Norfolk County, which according to Norfolk Business, is Canada’s pumpkin capitol. Though the region is a massive producer of pumpkins, they generally do not ship pumpkins all over Canada, and with the Yukon being some 5000 km away, Yukoners likely won’t be seeing any pumpkins from the country’s pumpkin capitol. Miles’ pumpkins do ship all over eastern Canada, and have made it as far west as Saskatchewan, according to the farmer. Around two thirds of Miles’ supply end up going to the U.S.A. The transportation of pump-

kins is a fairly simple process, compared to the months of planning, preparation and dealing with issues that come with the actual planting and growing. Pumpkins, like most produce, are shipped on freight trucks—which is why shipping logistics are important to determine where pumpkins can make it in good condition in time for the fall rush. Keeping pumpkins fresh during travel is crucial, as when they start to rot, they rot quickly. The packing of the pumpkins is an important part of the transportation as well. Pumpkins are often packed for their drives in cardboard cartons, inside crates, with proper air circulation to prevent early ripening and dimmish the quality of the fruits. cont’d on page 3 ...

Miles Produce Ltd.’s pumpkin farm in Waterford, Ontario As many Yukoners know, driving to Whitehorse from even communities in northern B.C. can still take upwards of a couple of days, so the importance of properly packing pumpkins to stay fresh when they’re headed up someplace like the Yukon can’t be understated.

For Miles, this year wasn’t the easiest when it came to growing pumpkins because of the large amounts of water Ontario received. Still, he’s been in this business for decades, and has learned how to get around problems like this, something any farmer will have to do eventu-

ally. By the time pumpkins are on the shelves in stores, ready to be bought and carved into jack-olanterns, Miles has done months worth of work to get them there. “It’s a long process,” he said. “But once you’ve done it so many times, it’s like riding a bike.” The work may be long and ar-

duous, but by the time the pumpkins are finally ready for Halloween, Miles finds the work rewarding and satisfying. “Pumpkin season is usually a fun time of year,” said Miles. “It’s always nice to see the pumpkins in the bins.” n

MISFITS VERSUS CITY HALL

PART 1

Atlas Shrugged, written by Ayn Rand, is an 1100 page book which tells the story of a Bureaucratic US government that imposed burdensome laws and regulations on corporations, to the point that the corporations withdrew their services.

A

lthough I read Atlas Shrugged over a decade ago, it took my pea brain that long to figure out that I was also involved in a mini-Atlas Shrugged. Before I came to Inuvik, NWT in 1972, I had already been driving taxis in two other towns for nearly two years. When I started driving taxis in Inuvik, the first thing I noticed was how low the fares were. The minimum fare in the two towns I had driven in before was one dollar. In high-cost Inuvik, which had no highway and everything brought in by air or boat, the taxi fare minimum was seventyfive cents. I didn’t realize it at the time, but a lot of other drivers had come to the same conclusion as me - those bloody fares were from the Stone Age. With absolutely no input on my part, the cab companies went to a town council meeting and asked for the minimum fare to be increased to one dollar. It’s getting close to fifty years since that town hall meeting, and my poor little brain has retained slightly more details than

PHOTO: Pixabay a bottomless cup. The only two things I remember about it are the indifference of the mayor, and the attitude of one councilor. The councilor’s long winded spiel went on about how there was no justification for a fare increase. Next came the kicker that is still crystal clear in my foggy brain today, “Where in the world did you dream up this idea that you are entitled to a fare increase?” we were asked?

We left the council meeting with our tail between our legs. At the time of the town hall meeting, Inuvik had four taxi companies, with over thirty five taxis in total between them. Only one company was a viable operation the company I was leased on with was limping along. We were a bunch of misfits at best, who were leaderless. We learn in life that there are advantages and disadvantages

in everyone and everything. Misfits have a few advantages also. Sometimes taking action and not having a clue what the final result will be is an advantage. Looking back today, I can see clearly that the town councilor’s inflammatory statements had lodged venom deep, deep down in our gut. Someday soon it was going to regurgitate and splash all over town. he celebration included stories, exhibit opening of William’s artwork and performances by the The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers. The artists involved in the carving of the totem are Calvin Morberg, Duran Henry, Justin Smith ,Yuya Morishima, Colin Teramura, Joshua Lesage and Owen Munroe of the Northern Cultural Expressions Society. An exhibit of William’s work is on display at the Yukon Arts Centre’s Yukon Energy Community Gallery until October 29. Teslin-Tlingit artist William Yaxkasei Callaghan (1983-2016) was a carver, dancer, and graphic artist. He was born in Whitehorse and into the Dakhl’awèdi clan, which is the killer whale/eagle clan of the Teslin Tlingit First Nation. His Tlingit name, Yaxkasei, means “can see a long way”. William began carving when he was just nineteen, collaborating on a bear mask with celebrated artist Eugene Alfred. Upon joining the Sundog carving program in 2005, William decided to pursue a career as an artist. Stylistically, he embraced Tlingit design infused with his personal experiences. In 2006, three of his carvings were displayed in the United Nations building in New York City and in 2007 one of his masks was presented to the Former Governor General Michelle Jean. William pursued his Bachelors degree in Fine Art at Vancouver’s Emily Carr University of Art and Design and was an active participant in the school’s Aboriginal Initiatives. cont’d on page 7 ...

CAREGIVERS STRENGTHEN THE HEALTH OF YOUR HEART Nurturing Children in Intense Times Question: How can we best support our children during intense times? The Card: Major Arcana VI, The Lovers Rulerships: Gemini, Mercury. Element: Air. Colours: Blue, Orange, Yellow. Day: Friday Gemstones and Minerals: Rose Quartz, Agate, Alexandrite, Clear Calcite, Staurolite

Photo: Aimée Dawn Robinson The Deck: The Rider-Waite Coleman-Smith, first published in 1910. Astrological Circumstances: I cast the reading during the Last Quarter Moon in Aries, in a plume of white sage, with benevolent intentions. May it harm none. Physical Description: In this gorgeous card, we see an angel named Raphael with strong fibrous red-purple wings, blessing two naked humans, as they stand in harmony with one another and nature inside an abundant garden. A snake winds ‘round the trunk of a healthy fruit tree behind one person. A tree of small flames stands behind the other person. In the background, we see a volcanic mountain. A giant vibrant sun shines behind the angel Raphael. Metaphysical Description and Advice: I have one million things to say about The Lovers; it is one of my favourite Tarot cards. But for now, we will focus on two layers of the card in relation to raising kids during intense times. Layer one, heart health. Layer two, communication during changes. Layer one, heart health. This luscious card reminds us, our chil-

dren exist inside our hearts as part of us. When our hearts are healthy, our children’s can be too. Major Arcana VI, The Lovers, is not only about the romantic relationships in our lives. It is also about living in harmony with creative spirit and with compassionate, loving intentions. The presence of the angel Raphael and the snake indicate the healing of spirit. In Hebrew, Raphael means, “God has healed”. In pre-Christian times, and today, the snake is a symbol of renewal and health. Strengthen the health of your heart for your kids. Encourage more balance between feminine and masculine energies in your family. Allow yourself to receive love. In The Lovers, human inter-

connection with nature is also a heart remedy and a constant state of being. Stay connected with nature and you will have less healing to do later. Layer two, communication during changes! Raising kids brings a continual stream of choices and assessments. During intense times, the stakes of each choice can be higher, or feel higher. In the oldest versions of The Lovers card, the two people stand together at an actual crossroads. They assess the many possible paths and c h o i c e s before them. The beautiful imagery in the card encourages the realization – it is beautiful to have choices. The card advises we make choices rooted in love and in balance with nature, our home. The Lovers recommend passing an abundant garden of a planet to our children. Gemini, the sign of communication and quick-change rules this card. Communication in the world of Gemini is fun and vital, effortless even. Communicate our choices with love to our children with a quick light touch and be ready to adapt and listen as the conversation unfolds (perhaps way faster than we would like it to!). With so much to question in the world, The Lovers suggests the kids you nurture need to hear balanced information from you, straight from the heart. If you fear you won’t know what to say, try remembering – it doesn’t need to be adorned; tune into nature and speak with true love. Remember to use your healthy heart when you communicate intense topics or big changes with kids you love. Try not to speak from the worried heart you beat up for your own purposes! If this last sentence resonates with you, please re-read Layer one, heart health, above! n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

Family affairs called me away from the Yukon for the first three weeks of September

W

hile I was gone, I dreamed of berry picking. Plucking the occasional blackberry from Vancouver Island hedges was just not the same as a full-on Yukon low-bush cranberry expedition. I was back in time for a gloriously sunny day of foraging amidst dazzling blue pothole lakes and trees of shimmering orange. A perfect fall day became more perfect when we found berries, in great number, and filled our buckets. On Surprise Road, near Mystery Lake, we sat on folding chairs to drink tea and feast on cranberry scones while juncos fluttered in the trees and the occasional eagle soared

overhead. Once home we winnowed in the breeze, picking out pine needles, twigs and scraps of lichen from the shiny red bounty, then tucked bags of cleaned berries away in the freezer. Since then I’ve made more cranberry scones, cranberry and whipped cream dessert crepes, and cranberry chutney. The latest treat is an old-fashioned jelly roll, made with cranberry jam, not jelly, and finished with whipped cream, Amaretto and toasted sliced almonds. Ooh la la. I hope you had a great berry season, and I wish you many happy berry hours in the kitchen this fall and winter. CRANBERRY ALMOND ROLL Adapted from Joy of Cooking Ingredients: • 4 large eggs, yolks and whites separated • 3/4 cup granulated sugar • 1 tsp almond extract • 3/4 cup cake and pastry flour, sifted before measuring

CRANBERRY BOUNTY ... cont’d from page 19 from the short side; for a longer, thinner one, roll from the long side.) Cool the wrapped cake on a rack. 9. To fill, unroll the cooled cake, leaving it on the towel, and spread the jam over top, leaving about a 1/2-inch margin at the edges. Roll the cake up using the towel to nudge it into shape. Wrap the roll in plastic wrap, place it seam-side down on a baking tray and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. 10. Whip cream until soft peaks form and slowly add icing sugar and Amaretto, continuing to whip until stiff peaks form. Transfer cake to a serving platter and unwrap. Spread topping evenly over the roll and sprinkle with toasted, sliced almonds. Slice and serve. Makes 10 to 12 servings.

SIMPLE CRANBERRY JAM Ingredients: • 2 cups low bush cranberries, fresh or frozen • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon Instructions:

PHOTOS: Michele Genest Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 375F. Butter a 10 x 15-inch rimmed baking sheet, line it with parchment paper, making sure the paper overlaps the pan, and butter the parchment paper. 2. Beat egg yolks with an electric whisk until thick and creamy. Add sugar gradually while still

beating. Add almond extract. 3. After sifting and measuring the flour, re-sift with baking powder and salt. Add the flour mixture slowly to the egg mixture, beating constantly. A wooden spoon is best at this stage. 4. In a separate bowl with a clean whisk, beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold them lightly into the cake batter.

5. Pour batter into the prepared pan, smoothing with the back of a spoon or an offset spatula, making sure the batter reaches right into the corners. Bake for 12 minutes. 6. While the cake is baking, spread a clean tea towel on the counter and sprinkle it liberally with sifted icing sugar—this is to keep the cake from sticking

to the tea towel. 7. As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, loosen the edges of the parchment paper from the pan and reverse the cake out of the pan onto the tea towel. 8. While it’s still warm, roll the cake up in the towel, twisting the ends to keep it secure. (For a shorter, thicker cake, roll

THROUGH A DARK WOOD

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalism student, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

Local artist Jenifer Davidson talks about her new art show, which ran this October

J

enifer Davidson has been creating art for as long as she can remember. It’s not only an enjoyable hobby, but something that has seriously benefitted her mental health as well, even helping her move through her grieving process when her father passed away a few years ago. “I could make stuff all day, everyday, until I turn to dust and still never get to all the media I’d like to work in,” the artist told What’s Up Yukon. “My life goal, by the way, is to make all the stuff, all the time.” Davidson’s newest artistic endeavour is called Through a Dark Wood, an art show running at the

FREE SPACE gallery in Northern Front Studio until October 29. The works on display as part of the show were made with materials from all over the Yukon. Foraged materials such as Bennet Lake driftwood, Yukon River and Dezadeash gravel and sand and rocks from Keno area and Ethel Lake have all found their way into Davidson’s artwork. One of the show’s highlights is “The Forest King’’ an installation piece approximately 10 by six feet in size. For Davidson, the creation of the art and the setup of the show was an enjoyable process, especially thanks to a friend who stepped in to help out. With such large pieces, there can be a lot of special logistics to figure out, and Davidson had to be conscious of time when doing so. “It is a good thing that there are deadlines in a set up like this - I could have tweaked and fluffed and adjusted for days,” she said. “It was fun to play with hanging “The Forest King”, the floating dandelion bits and the spider webs, as well as the lights in the pieces and on them.” This is not Davidson’s first time at the helm of an art show, but she said she thinks having put together art shows in the past and the lessons she has learned along the way alleviated a lot of the stress and anxiety she might have felt working to make Through a Dark Wood happen. Davidson is also grateful to be part of the Yukon’s vibrant and accepting arts community, and she said the very few barriers to entering the community allow for new perspectives to be showcased. “Besides the many benefits that arts bring to a community, with mental health, beauty, community cohesion and safer

spaces, embracing our authentic and vulnerable selves encourages or inspires others to have courage,” she said. In addition to being an artist, Davidson juggles employment, studies and motherhood. She used to save creating art for her downtime and only do it once all her chores have been completed, but as her art helped her in her process of grieving her father, she realized she needed to make it more of a priority because of the benefits it brought her. “As I moved through grief, I made more space in my life for creating, and set up my dedicated studio,” she said, later adding “a lot of my work involves multistage processes. So, there is a lot of “pop into the shop and clear coat” then tend to family, house or employment needs. I think it works well for me because of I have a constant flow of ideas. Many pieces in various stages and a never-ending to-do list allow me to bounce back and forth between art and life. I also combine outdoor adventures with gathering and foraging materials with help from my family.” “This show was a complete trip through my own imagination,” said Davidson. “Embracing my vulnerability and fear, I drew from my authentic self, embraced my fears and vulnerability and just put it out there. I am so in love with many of the pieces; they make me laugh, clap, and bounce about.” Through a Dark Wood can be seen in the FREE SPACE gallery at Northern Front Studio, located at 110-2237 2nd Avenue in Whitehorse. The show is on display until October 29, with opening hours Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. n
