Lauren Waters and Marian Geary are long-time friends with a mutual love for the natural world.

T

heir friendship developed around the outdoors, on camping and paddling trips. They are also visual artists who decided to collaborate on a body of work that celebrates nature’s ability to nurture the human spirit. The result is an exhibition called Nourished by Nature now showing at the Yukon Arts Centre community gallery. Although their practices may seem quite different – Waters is a watercolour artist, Geary is a potter – their materials are drawn

s

from the same elements. As Waters points out, a potter’s clay consists of soil and water, while watercolours are water plus pigments, which come from the soil. The artists are “working in the same medium with different results,” Waters says. Geary has been “playing with mud,” as she puts it, for over 15 years. She’s benefited from local resources such as Art Underground’s studio and classes. Although she bought a kiln and a wheel of her own, she ultimately chose to work in potter Patrick Royle’s studio where she learns from his expertise and enjoys the company of others. Geary generally focuses on practical work – mugs, tumblers and bowls – which she sells at craft sales. However, for Nourished by Nature, she’s been experimenting with less utilitarian pieces and

focusing more on decorative elements. “I have typically been a practical potter – I do lots of mugs and whatever else. But I’ve also always looked at nature and gone ‘Wow, look at that pattern, look at that cool pattern in nature. Like, how do I put that into my pottery? How can I bring the two together?’” Geary also had the challenge of bringing her earthy pottery together with Waters’ ethereal watercolours. “I’ve seen these lovely paintings but how do I relate them to what I’m doing?” Geary asked herself. For Waters, watercolours are the perfect medium to express her immediate experience with nature. cont’d on page 3 ...

For example, Geary created an owl vessel, which got Waters interested in the bird as

a subject as well. The result is a piece called Who, a portrait of a pensive owl emerging from an atmospheric background. The artists have a few ways that they “feed off one another.” For example, Waters once mentioned to Geary a fascination with dragonflies, but didn’t pursue them artistically. But her friend did. “Of course I didn’t do any paintings of dragonflies, then all of a sudden Marian sends me this picture of this gorgeous bowl that she had done with a dragonfly in raku and I’m like, ‘Oh wow,’”

Nourished by nature ... cont’d

PHOTO: Lauren Waters repertoire of skills to draw from when deciding how to approach her work. The result is a range of styles from realism to impressionism to a more stylized expressionism. The latter can be seen in Waters’ Purple Feathers, where the feathers are reduced to geometric shapes set against a dynamic, abstract background. The painting partners well with Geary’s raku Feather Vase, featuring loon feathers burned into the vessel. In both the painting and the vase, the artists experimented with techniques and processes to create unusual and original pieces. All of this experimentation and collaboration begins with the artists’ similar visions for Nourished by Nature. “For me it’s inspiring others to experience the awe of nature, sparking a joy or a way to connect

s

Waters says. “And that sparked me to figure out the technique that I wanted to use [to paint dragonflies].” That quest sent Waters and her partner on a hike in pursuit of dragonflies. Waters “drove herself crazy” attempting to capture the flitting, evasive insects with her camera, to no avail. Then, on their way home, a single dragonfly landed in their van and she was able to photograph it. Waters’ final watercolour includes three remarkedly realistic dragonflies with transparent wings set against washes of blues, greens and browns. It’s a fitting complement to Geary’s piece, which features raku glazes and three hovering dragonflies cut out of the clay. As part of her process, Waters takes online lessons. Learning from other artists expands her

Dragonflies by Marian Geary deeply with nature,” says Waters. “If people see joy in other people, they experience it themselves,” Geary reflects. “I hope people appreciate nature and that I can add one more dimension to that.” Nourished by Nature is showing at the Yukon Energy Community Gallery at the Yukon Arts Centre. FIVE YEARS OF KICKING UP A STORM As the Kicksled Revolution rings in its fifth birthday, owner and founder Anne Middler sat with me over coffee in her downtown Whitehorse shop to reflect on the past five years and on what she hopes will come.

Anne and her daughter Juniper enjoy their kicksleds PHOTOS: Submitted by Kicksled Revolution

W

hile Kicksled Revolution officially opened its doors in the fall of 2016, Middler’s introduction to (and infatuation with) kicksleds

happened long before, in 2009. “I immediately fell in love with it, like really loved it so much,” she said. “It reminded me of skateboarding, but it was safe and

stable and I just thought it was such a fun way to move my body in the wintertime.” Middler began to collect kicksleds and took it up as transporta-

tion and recreation with her young daughter, Juniper. At the time, Middler was also working in the environmental movement. Like many, she had a

growing concern around the need to green our transportation. She saw kicksledding as a fun and easy cont’d on page 7 ...

Five years of kicking up a storm ... cont’d way to make this necessary shift. “So, I coined the term Kicksled Revolution,” said Middler. “Because I really felt that kicksleds were going to change the way we get around. And it was going to help us individually reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in the wintertime.” With that, the philosophy behind the Kicksled Revolution was born. As she shared her philosophy more widely, others grew excited too. But the question remained— how would they make it happen? And that’s when Middler knew she needed to start the business in order to bring kicksledding to the

North. In 2016, with a 20-foot shipping container full of kicksleds coming from across the world, Middler took a chance and opened the doors of her business. What followed has been five years of excitement and joy as more than 1,500 Yukoners, young and old, have joined her as she glides on frozen lakes, forest trails and snow-covered city roads. For those new to kicksledding, they could be seen as the ultimate winter vehicle, which is apparent as Middler shared her favourite places to use them and how she used one every day last year except two from October to April.

kick-xpedition takes kicksledders across a frozen lake IBID

“My daughter kicksleds to school every day, we kicksled to fiddle practice, we kicksled to the grocery store,” said Middler. “I kicksled with my dog several times a day instead of just walking him. But mostly it’s a tool of pure joy and I see it as a mental health promotion … you can go destination kicksledding—put it in your car and go to a frozen lake or trail system. Most of them have a seat so you can pack gear or your bag to enjoy a cup of tea.” And in March and April when the lakes harden, they can even be used for multi-day kick-xpeditions—some of Middler’s favourite

holidays. Looking back at the past five years, Middler has too many favourite moments to count—many of which have taken place in her store. “I love the kicksled shop,” said Middler. “I love being in here. And every single interaction in this store is uplifting and positive for me. There’s been so many beautiful connections with people, taking people kicksledding for the first time and launching a fleet in the schools in the communities.” Feedback from her many happy customers about how their kicksled has changed their rela-

tionship with winter also brings Middler – a self-professed winter lover – joy. As a low-barrier activity, kicksledding is great for all ages – including kids – and fitness levels. Visit Middler at the cozy Kicksled Revolution Headquarters, located downtown Whitehorse on 5th Ave between Wood and Jarvis. Look for the friendly giant kicksled cargo van parked out front. The shop is open Wednesday to Friday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and by appointment. n

Michele Genest

GATHER

Michele Genest is a Whitehorse-based chef and writer. She is also somewhat of a gardener. Michele has also written two books “The Boreal Feast - A Culinary Journey Through The North” and “The Boreal Gourmet - Adventures In Northern Cooking.”

A SNACK FOR THE MAGIC HOUR At this time of year there is a cornucopia of beautifully packaged goodies that look really nice in a gift basket, and very welcome they are too. But, do you ever eat a cracker or a cookie from one of those packages and think to yourself, “Huh. I could make that.” Me too.

A

couple of weeks ago I sampled some pricey Parmesan and rosemary shortbreads, and they were darn good, but I was pretty sure I could do them better (and cheaper). So I tried, using spruce tips instead of rosemary, and I’m going to out on a limb and say the results are five-star. I know, that’s a big claim. Hubris awaits. But I hope you agree. One of my favourite times in December is that twilit hour between dusk and darkness, sitting by a window and watching the snow fall or the wind blow through the spruce trees. My plan in the coming days is to cordon off that quiet hour, park myself in an armchair, nibble on a few Parmesan and Spruce Tip Shortbreads and sip a Rob Roy. I hope you, too, find a quiet hour for yourself amongst the seasonal kookiness, along with the perfect accompaniment.

PHOTO: Miche Genest PARMESAN AND SPRUCE TIP SHORTBREADS Ingredients • 4 oz (1/2 cup) unsalted butter at room temperature • 3 oz (1 cup, packed) grated Parmesan • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 tbsp dried spruce tips, minced • 1/2 tsp salt Method 1. Cream the butter until light and fluffy in a medium-sized bowl. Add flour, Parmesan, spruce tips and salt and mix thoroughly until the dough starts to clump together.

2. Transfer dough to a work surface and press and pat it into a disc. Divide the disc in half.

6. Cut each log into 1/4-inch slices—you should be able to get 12 slices from each one.

3. Taking the first half, shape the dough into a squared log of about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and 6 inches in length, pressing firmly. Press the ends down on the counter to flatten them.

7. Arrange on a baking sheet about an inch apart. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until shortbreads are just turning golden at the edges.

4. Repeat with the second half of the dough. Wrap each one tightly in plastic or waxed paper, twisting the ends, and refrigerate for a good hour. 5. Preheat the oven to 350F about 15 minutes before you plan to bake, and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

8. Remove from oven and cool shortbreads on a rack; as they cool, the sprucey flavour becomes more pronounced. 9. Serve with eggnog, on a cheese platter, or with a quiet Rob Roy cocktail sipped while gazing out the window at falling snow. Makes about 24 shortbreads.

ROB ROY COCKTAIL Ingredients • 2 oz Two Brewer’s Whisky, any iteration • 3/4 oz sweet vermouth • 2 dashes Free Pour Jenny’s Solstice Bitters • Maraschino, Luxardo or Bourbon-soaked cherry for garnish Method 1. Combine all ingredients except cherry in a mixing glass with ice, stir several times and then strain into a coup, or serve over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with cherry. Makes one cocktail. n

THE FIDDLER IN THE NORTH

with

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalism student, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

Simon Crelli is a Yukon musician with quite an impressive resume, and a mentor to many of the territory’s young musicians

S

imon Crelli likes to let his music do the talking. Though he chooses his words carefully speaking to What’s Up Yukon, he still says relatively little, as he doesn’t usually talk about himself all that much. Instead, the fiddler and violinist finds that, through music, he is able to express what he can’t find the words to say. Music has always been Crelli’s preferred means of communication, since he started playing at age seven. He was still a child when he decided music was what he wanted to spend his life pursuing. “It took a bit of training for a few years,” he says. “It took around four years for me to start learning something and feel like it was going somewhere.” Though Crelli has dabbled with a few other interests and hobbies, like dog mushing, skiing and studying history, it was always music with which he had the most special connection. He was raised in a musical family, but also practically out in the wilderness in both the Yukon and Alaska—Crelli’s mother, Marcia Toland, still describes their family as “very low-tech people.” “We’d spend a few months out here and there and I’d practice in the cabin,” says Crelli. “I’d have music from my instructor I’d take out and work on over the winter.” Crelli has lent his skills to many different ensembles and symphonies in several cities over the years, and also recognizes the importance of sharing his talents with the next generation as a teacher.

Simon Crelli doing what he loves most PHOTO: Courtesy of Marcia Toland (his mom) He helps out with the Fiddleheads, a group of young fiddlers in Whitehorse, and teaches fiddle in Dawson City as well. Growing up, Crelli was also a musical mentor for his younger sister. “It’s a good feeling; it’s nice to see young people develop their skills,” Crelli says of his teaching work. “To be able to pass it on and watch them grow and have fun with it is a nice thing to see.” Crelli still makes music with his family, most recently featur-

ing at a Coffee House event at the Whitehorse United Church. He says he hopes to soon enough be able to return to Fairbanks and Vancouver to rekindle his musical connections in person in these two cities, and has been having jam sessions over Zoom with old friends. “That’s a lot of what playing with other people constitutes right now,” he says. In addition to his teaching and virtual jam sessions, Crelli read

on the StoryHour, a show on Dawson City’s CFYT radio channel. He also makes sure he finds the time to practice every day, and learning some new violin concertos. For Crelli, keeping up his practice regimen is important, and he’s grateful to still be able to play after an accident a few years ago that left him unable to move his arm for several months. Eventually, he was able to pick the fiddle back up, but it was a long and strenuous road to being able to

play a full song again, let alone an entire set. “It started out slow,” he says. “It took about three months, but once I got to it, it felt like I was back to normal.” Hanging on Crelli’s wall is a quote that reads: “For the common things of every day, God gave man words in a common way. But for the heights and depths words cannot reach, God gave man music, the soul’s own speech. n

clearly remember as a child being told that something I wanted, such as Halloween or Christmas, or especially my birthday, was coming soon! “Grownups always say that.” I would grumble to myself. None of those things were “soon” unless they were tomorrow, or perhaps a maximum of three sleeps away. But now, at age 72, everything comes much sooner. I feel as if I have barely put away the Christmas decorations and now it is time to drag them out again. On the afternoon of October 31st, the shops were putting Christmas items out on the shelves. How is it possible that another year has gone by? This morning as I extracted my morning medications from their handy little compartment in my week’s plastic box, I noticed that it was empty once again. I was sure that I had just refilled it. Was it the day before yesterday? It can’t have been a whole week. And that sort of thing happens again and again. Time is definitely speeding up. Perhaps this can be explained by the fact that a week in my life now is a much smaller fraction of the time I have been alive compared to that of my five-year-old granddaughter. But I am not sure

PHOTO: Pixabay my wrist watch with its beautiful Roman numerals. (Does anyone under 50 even know what they are?) And anyway, time is just a construct. It is how I experience it that matters. And I experience

faster as well. Change is happening more rapidly than in the past. Take the weather for example. The changes related to climate change are occurring faster than was predicted or expected by

sons is no longer valid. Sometimes I must confirm to myself what season we are actually in. I have had a fear of extreme weather since childhood. I think it started with one of the very first movies

I saw in a theatre with my parents when I was quite young. I vividly remember a scene of a violent rain and windstorm and a trailer that was stuck in mud at the side of the road. I was so terrified that my mother had to take me outside to calm down. I have no idea what the movie was, but it affected me to the extent that when I lived for a brief time in a house trailer on the Manitoba prairie, I would hide under the bed (as an adult) when those summer thunderstorms and possible tornadoes were happening. The changes that are causing extreme weather events in so many places around the world cause me a lot of anxiety. Any sort of rapid change is difficult to manage, no matter what one’s age. Because I have lived more years than many folks, I have had more time to become set in my ideas and habits. Combined with time speeding up, it is often difficult to adjust. If changing one’s lifestyle is one of the solutions to slowing down climate change, I know that will be hard for me. And how much time do I, do we, have? As I write this COP26 is underway in Glasgow. I have hope that the powerful will admit that they, too, are subject to the dictatorship of time, and decide to make the changes that we need. And I hope that I will be willing to do my part in this process. Time is running out. And time is definitely speeding up! n

PROFILES: Interview with Ruth Lera

Kay Deborah Linley Kay Deborah Linley is a Whitehorse-based writer.

RUTH LERA: ENERGY HEALER, MEDITATION TEACHER AND WRITER How we direct our mind and attention is very powerful, it can change our lives Do you consider yourself a Yukoner? How long have you lived in the north? Do you mostly serve our northern communities? Yes, I consider myself a Yukoner. I’ve lived here since 1996. When I was 18, I took a one-way flight from Ontario and I’m still here. I’ve spent my whole adult life in the Mt. Lorne and Whitehorse area. Most of my work is Whitehorse and Yukon based, with a lesser extent in the smaller communities and abroad. When did you start your healing practice and what motivated you to choose this career path? What kind of training/learnings did you undertake to prepare? How does your background and previous work experience compliment your current work as a healer? Was it a natural progression or a significant career change?

PHOTO: Courtesy of Ruth Lera

I have been teaching meditation and doing healing work for ten years. I started this work because I had a burning desire to be

of service. Before this, I worked in family and children services, but decided to leave, because I felt like I had more potential and needed to find a career to match this potential. The decision wasn’t an easy one. I had to do a lot of soulsearching and dug deep. I went up the Dempster Highway and spent an entire night away trying to decide. By the next morning, I had decided teaching meditation and energy healing was the right fit for me. I knew they had potential and could effect change and were inexpensive for me to run and doable. So, I got going and trained as a meditation teacher and did Healing Touch and Quantum Touch courses, and added from there. People ask whether I was born with a gift. Sure, looking back I realize now that as a child and teenager I was reading people, but I really think my decision to start this career was a choice. They were modalities that I believed in and felt passionate about, and once I started the work, I felt happier that I was reaching more people, it felt better. Can you tell us a bit more about your work? It says you are an Energy Healer, Meditation Teacher and Writer on your website, sounds multi-disciplinary. How would you describe your work to someone who might be

brand new to the world of spirituality and/or alternative healing? With meditation, I do work on a spectrum, from beginner to advanced. In beginner, I teach students how to pause and connect with themselves to go inwards. The advanced focuses more on developing intuition and healing energy. Regardless of where on the spectrum I teach, there is one main premise – how do I use my attention? How we direct our mind and attention is very powerful, it can change our lives, but it is a skill we need to learn. The one-on-one energy healing work I do is different. I do private sessions and take clients on an hour-long journey into that person’s energy and life. The work focuses on making shifts in the person’s energy to bring about beneficial results in their life. And my writing is putting these concepts into articles. I have one published book and am working on multiple manuscripts. For more information about Ruth’s meditation classes, courses and book check out her website at ruthlera.com. FIRST LADY OF KLONDIKE GOLD Remembering Kate Carmack (Shaaw Tláa)

L

ooking back on the 125th anniversary of the gold find that sparked the Klondike Gold Rush, Zena McLean wants people to reflect on the contributions of Tlingit woman Kate Carmack (Shaaw Tláa) to this defining event in Yukon and Canadian history. McLean is a descendant of Kate’s, a member of the Carcross/ Tagish First Nation and an Interpretation Coordinator for Parks Canada. McLean is passionate about sharing her family stories and their connections to Yukon history. In August 1896, Kate was part of the prospecting party that pulled enough gold from Rabbit Creek, later renamed Bonanza, to cause nearly every miner in the surrounding area to converge on the Klondike River watershed. When news of the gold strike reached the outside world the following year, tens of thousands of stampeders set off for these Indigenous lands, indelibly impacting peoples and places along the way. The “Discovery Claim” was officially registered to Kate’s husband, American George Carmack, with nearby claims staked by her brother, Keish (Skookum Jim Mason) and her nephew, Káa Goox (Dawson Charlie). For more than 120 years, Kate was largely unrecognized for her role in making that find possible. “Kate is what kept them alive. Kate is what kept George alive,”

Yukon Archives, James Albert Johnson fonds, 82/341, #15

Kate Carmack, George Carmack and their daughter posing in front of their log cabin on Bonanza Creek, 1897 says McLean. “She was what held that party together. I always call her the executive secretary of her time. She was what kept things running.” While there are family stories that it was in fact Kate who pulled the discovery claim gold from the creek, more important for the success of the group were her skills and knowledge of the land that she learned growing up within the traditions of strong Tagish and Tlingit women.

Most likely born around 1867, she was given the name Shaaw Tláa. Her mother was Dak`laweidí (Killer Whale Clan, Wolf Moiety) and her father was a Deisheetaan Chief (Beaver Clan, Crow Moiety). In her early life, Shaaw Tláa would have moved with her family following the seasons, learning to be a steward of the land, to hunt, fish, trap, sew and harvest plants for food and medicine in the area around the lakes now known as Bennett, Marsh, Tagish and Nares.

Shaaw Tláa’s first husband was the son of a Chilkat chief, who died of influenza along with their infant daughter while living in a village on the Alaskan coast. Returning to her family following this loss, Shaaw Tláa would eventually meet George Carmack. “As far as we know, George was a scallywag ... I would describe him as a rolling stone … he just lurched from one occupation to the next.” says McLean. “Skookum Jim Mason literally found this

man starving on the beaches of Bennett.” It was in keeping with their family values that widowed Shaaw Tláa would come to marry George. “Our family tradition is no one is left alone,” explains McLean. It was George that renamed her Kate due to his difficulty with pronouncing her Indigenous name. Following her new husband’s rambling ways, Kate worked her way across the region — packing over the Chilkoot Pass, trading furs, hunting and trapping, running a trading post, and placer mining — eventually landing in the Klondike. Kate Carmack Kate’s sewing both kept her family warm and provided valuable income from selling mittens and mukluks to other miners. Over the seasons, she also harvested game and fish, berries and medicine, cooked and kept the household functioning. In 2019, Kate Carmack was formally recognized as one of the Klondike Discoverers with her induction into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, 20 years after the men of the group received

the same distinction. McLean accepted the honour on Kate’s behalf at a ceremony in Toronto. “She’s the first Indigenous woman [inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame], so that’s very important,” says McLean. “I think she was a very strong person. I think she knew her own mind. I truly believe she believed she was equal to any man.” To learn more about Kate Carmack and the discovery of gold in the Klondike:

This year’s theatre festival brings laughs sunshine, and other muchneeded breaks from the winter blues

Death Jesus Friends - Brian Fidler

W

hile the word “pivot” may have risen to the most over-used one in the English language in 2021, there is one Yukon theatre company that

was using it well before everyone else. Nakai Theatre’s Pivot Festival is celebrating its 14th year of bringing the unexpected and the future-forward to Whitehorse. The festival will run from Jan. 11 to 22, bringing a much-needed infusion of comedy and laughs. “For a festival in January I’ve always thought including laughter was very important and that only increases during the pandemic,” said Jacob Zimmer, artistic director of the festival. “I also believe that comedy can be a great way to reflect and respond to big and important issues. There are hard things in the world that we’re all

off

dealing with and we can do that better if we can also laugh with each other.” Ramshackle Theatre’s Brian Fiddler will perform his Death, Jesus, and Friends, a deeply silly puppet show featuring (you guessed it) Death and Jesus along with a charming and loveable set of characters including Jesus’ brother, and Bob and Doug McKenzie. The Edmonton improv duo of Folk Lordz will bring local guests onstage for its in-person performances. And hailing from Vancouver, comedy artist Candice cont’d on page 32 ...

HOW ARE THINGS UNDER THE HOOD OF YOUR CAR? Have you had a look under your hood, how are your fluid levels, what about your belts and hoses. Most owners manuals show you where to check fluids at, if you have to add any fluids make sure they are the ones for your car. The belts and hoses are sometimes a little harder to check, if you are unable to check them or have any questions, take your car to your mechanic so they can have a look at it for you.

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

Roberts will explore the absurdity of gender roles and the binary with her hit show LARRY. LARRY is a fearlessly funny portrait of the small-town Canadian hoser on a path of self-discovery. Through the piece, Roberts will take the audience on a journey of looking at gender stereotypes, masculinity and the experience of growing up as a woman in a rural town. For those looking for a midwinter escape to the beach, no travel is necessary. The Pivot Festival will once again fill the Old Fire Hall with enough wattage to rival a trip to the sun itself with its Sun Room space. Audiences are welcome to visit the pop-up summer park to read a book, scroll on social media, take a break from the cold, or have a picnic and visit with friends. For those who wish to enjoy theatre in the great outdoors, this year’s Pivot Festival ensures there is in fact something for everyone. The Pivot Poetry Crawl will take small groups along the riverfront

path to meet and hear from poets along the way. Cold weather lovers and passerbys grabbing a morning coffee at Baked can also stop to watch a projected video and audio installation on the windows of the Old Fire Hall. The piece will feature renowned tap dancer Travis Knights and Toronto choreographer Brandy Leary as they explore the connection of tap and Black bodies. Through dance and storytelling, Knights will reflect on and honour the communities and cultures that have shaped tap dance over time. Beyond the performances, this year’s festival will also be sharing ideas and sparking discussion about the far future and the magic it might bring. Christine Genier will bring to the festival a talk on Indigenous Futurism. What does it look like at the intersection of walking with the land and living in a landscape of high-tech and AI? As we move full-steam ahead into a future led and run by technology, while simultaneously many

are embracing nature and the benefit it brings to our lives, how will these two futures look as they continue to collide? In her presentation, Genier will explore these ideas connecting to the works of other Indigenous artists. There is much to be excited about for this year’s festival. Zimmer shared some of the festival elements he is most looking forward to. “First, just to have audiences at all! I’m really looking forward to walking the river with poetry and seeing Ephemeral Artifacts light up the Front Street and the trail. I’m also really looking forward to hearing what Christine Genier’s been doing on Indigenous Futurisms and science fiction from Yukon First Nations’ perspective.” The Pivot Festival will run in Whitehorse Jan. 11 to 22, 2022. CRISPY ROASTED BROCCOLI WITH HOMEMADE SEASONING SALT ROASTED BROCCOLI WITH HOMEMADE SEASONING SALT Ingredients for roasted broccoli: • 1 large head of broccoli • 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil • A few pinches of homemade seasoning salt Ingredients for homemade seasoning salt: • 1 teaspoon sea salt • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1/4 teaspoon paprika • 1/4 teaspoon pepper Instructions:

Step 1

A quick and tasty vegetable side dish to go along with your main.

T

his recipe makes roughly 4 servings of roasted broccoli, but 10+ servings of homemade seasoning salt. Store your leftover seasoning salt sealed in the cupboard, and use it on all your other favourite recipes. Trust me, you’ll be eating this s*** on everything!

Step 2

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F Chop the stocks off your head of broccoli, and cut it up into small broccoli florets. 2. Put the broccoli florets in a large bowl and drizzle on the extra-virgin olive oil. Using a spoon or your hands, toss the broccoli florets until they are evenly coated in oil. Make your homemade seasoning salt by combining all dry ingredients in a small mason jar or dish. Add a few pinches of seasoning salt to your oiled broccoli florets and toss them again to evenly coat.

3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and evenly spread the broccoli florets out. Watch out for furry invaders! 4. Bake the broccoli florets for roughly 25 minutes, or until they are starting to brown and get crispy around the edges. Serve and enjoy!

Let’s be real, when New Year’s Resolutions roll around each year, most of us already know how we should eat to feel good, but staying consistent and accountable to that plan can be the tricky part! We are all human in the end. Having someone check in with you on a daily basis can be super powerful in helping you stay on track. I’ve seen it for myself, and I’ve seen it with my clients. Join me in a 2022 accountability challenge! Not only will you get customized weekly meal plans and grocery lists based on your own personal health and diet goals, but you’ll gain daily accountability and support to help you achieve those goals. This includes daily one-on-one chat and weekly accountability calls. Go to www.foodsandfeels.com > what I offer > customized meal plan + 1-on-1. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy Holidays! It has been an eventful year for Victoria Gold at the Eagle Gold Mine and our Dublin Gulch exploration camps and our team extends its sincere appreciation to Yukoners for your support in 2021. We recognize all the achievements gained this year have been made possible with the continued support and involvement of our employees and contractors and our business, community and First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun partners. We continue to maintain strict COVID-19 precautions as the health and safety of our workforce and all Yukoners remain at the forefront in all our operations. Together, we can help to keep our community safe and healthy. Looking ahead to 2022, the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society is excited to host the Every Student, Every Day Northern Lights Gala on January 22 in Whitehorse and in partnership with Yukon individuals, businesses and educators, continuing our efforts to raise funds and awareness towards increasing student attendance in classrooms throughout the territory. The entire Victoria Gold team looks forward to 2022 and to the continued benefits and opportunities that success at the Eagle Gold Mine can provide Yukoners. From my family to yours, I wish you much health and happiness this holiday season and extend our very best wishes to you all in the New Year. Sincerely,

Happy holidays from John, Tara, Klondike Kate and the entire Victoria Gold family.
