‘Vader’s Fist’ in the Yukon ... cont’d from page 2 of many garrisons, based on geographical areas. The legion website states that its members have “spread the magic of the Star Wars genre, worldwide, through its authentic-looking costumes, and has become the leading force in fanbased charity events. The 501st, also known as ‘Vader’s Fist,’ is truly dedicated to brightening the lives of those less fortunate.” The legion members wear movie-ready costumes that meet strict standards. Once in costume, members make public appearances to raise money for charities. There are five Yukon members, all of whom belong to the Badlands Garrison, which includes Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Kerri and Paul first became familiar with the 501st Legion when they attended Ptarmicon, a

gaming and popular culture convention in Yellowknife, in July 2019. Members of the Badlands Garrison who attended that event were also participating in YukomiCon (Yukon’s comic convention) that August. With accommodations being hard to find, the garrison members stayed with the Scholzes. “We had a blast,” Kerri said. Their garrison guests loaned costumes to their hosts—Kerri was a Jawa, and Paul was a Tusken Raider. The costume helped Kerri come out of her shell. “I’m a very shy person,” she said, “so I was very happy to be behind a mask.” It wasn’t long before Kerri made her own Jawa costume from monk cloth supplied by their garrison friends from Alberta. Paul bought a stormtrooper costume,

What’s Inside A Star Wars Christmas second-hand, for $1500. He wanted to be a stormtrooper partly because the Yukon already had three Jawas, who “by themselves look like monks, with glowing eyes— kind of scary looking.” Having a stormtrooper next to the Jawas helps put them into context, he said. The stormtrooper also appeals to Paul’s youthful side. “Every time I put this on, I’m eight years old again. I’m a kid who plays Star Wars.” By the time Paul had his stormtrooper costume in June, the pandemic had hit. This curtailed the garrison members’ ability to attend indoor events and to raise money for charity. However, they’ve made several informal outdoor public appearances to entertain unsuspecting Yukoners. They occupied the sidewalk on 12th Avenue, for example, and waved at the Porter Creek grad class as students toured by in buses. One driver was so surprised, he literally slammed on his brakes and took pictures. “It put smiles on peoples’ faces, which is the goal here,”

said Paul. It’s not all fun and games, though. The masks are hot and have little built-in fans to cool the costumers’ heads. It’s difficult to navigate in the costumes, and the Jawas and the stormtrooper require a handler so they don’t fall off a curb. Still, it’s clearly worth it to the Scholzes, who look forward to a pandemic-free Yukon where they can perhaps visit kids at the hospital. They’d also like to participate in the Pride and Canada Day parades, for which they both have themed bandoliers for their costumes. As members of the Badlands Garrison of the 501st League, they are part of a global community who bring smiles to faces wherever they go. It’s a pretty good gig for these sci-fi fans who embrace their Star Wars “bad guy” alter egos with gusto. “Sometimes we’re a bit introverted, but with these costumes— we’re a different character,” Paul said. “I’m not that quiet guy.” ■

Talking about The Force and all things Star Wars, with the Grant Family

“F

or me, now, Star Wars (SW) is a familiar universe where you know the rules,” reflected Mackenzie Grant. Since Mackenzie’s birthday is May the 4th, perhaps Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi would say it’s part of Mackenzie’s destiny to be-

come a Star Wars fan. Mackenzie discovered the world of Star Wars as a kid, through his older brother’s toys, and remembers having SW trading cards and the occasional die-cast toy with them “in the bush.” I recently had a delightful conversation with Mackenzie, his wife Geneviève Grant, and their nineyear-old son, JP Grant, over Geneviève’s fabulous lemon cake in their Whitehorse home. Also present was the family dog, a floppy, adorable little guy named FN-2187 (or

“Finn,” for short), after the SW character, of course. All of us are SW fans, so fueled by cake and tea, we covered a lot of ground in the conversation. We talked about some of the things we think make Star Wars so darn cool: the humour, the strong female characters, Han Solo’s wisecracks, the depth of the characters in the books, and the meditations about trust, love and friendships. sidering, When would JP be ready to watch it? I knew in advance all the parts he would find funny.” Mackenzie turned to JP and asked him, somewhat rhetorically, “Do you remember a world without Star Wars?” JP reported being into Star Wars since about age four, perhaps a little unsure if he could remember life without Star Wars. I was a little older than JP was when Star Wars entered my life, but it still made a huge impact, especially the concept of The Force, which, for me, was and is very real. For those of you who are unfamiliar, in the words of ObiWan, to Luke, “The Force is what gives a Jedi his [or her] power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.” In Star Wars, characters are either “force sensitive” or not, and those who are force sensitive tend to have rather-exciting lives

Everyone expressed their love for the range of the toys, from die-cast to the deep and detailed world of Star Wars Lego. We chatted about the thrill of the hunt for SW toys and the exciting ever-shifting market for SW collectibles. Chatting with the Grants, I felt the warmth of being in a non-judgmental space. When I expressed some criticism for the prequels, Mackenzie offered, “I’m never going to criticize these movies; you can’t criticize it. I love them all. A bad Star Wars movie is still a Star

JP Also reflected on the power of friendship, in the SW world, and a desire to see sneaky George Lucas cameos in the films. We all marvelled at the depth of the worlds created. We also talked about the pitfalls of hiding your kids from the bad guys on other planets, and about the excitement for the new Obi-Wan video game. JP has not been able to lift spaceships using The Force, yet, but offered, “I think The Force could be real. I think The Force could be like air, because air is in all living things.” Geneviève quipped, “Well, The Force is not in my life, not the way I want it to be … I’d like to be able to move boulders and stuff! So, it’s not real to me in that sense, but in the way JP describes it, ‘like air’ or connection between us.” Mackenzie agreed he would also like the handy ability of using The Force to move things or get stuff done. I love the really powerful female characters in the series lately, with Rey, and especially Ahsoka Tano.” Mackenzie fondly remembered watching A New Hope, when JP was a new baby, and said, “Holy smokes, this movie is still amazing as an adult.” Then he continued, “Watching it from the angle of con-

Stick with the W

Dennis Allen is an award-winning filmmaker, forlorn songwriter and hopeless storyteller. He’s the only guy he knows who’s never seen the Stones.

A new Star Wars fan favours Darth Maul

T

he Star Wars franchise really needs no introduction. Created by George Lucas, the first film was released in 1977 and has generated a very loyal and growing fan base. Nine films later, plus two anthology films, and you could say that Star Wars is one of the longest-running and mostsuccessful franchises out there. In addition to all of the movies, there is even a dedicated day for Star Wars franchise: May 4th (“May the 4th be with you!”). But what about those who are not familiar with the story? Well, I happened to fall into that category—but I am not completely aloof. I am aware of most of the characters and have a general idea of what Star Wars is all about. Mostly because I have seen all the fan gear, in stores and commercials, with the characters. I suppose the reason I never became fully interested in Star Wars is because the first few films came out before I was born. Also, the people in my family were more into James Bond, Jurassic Park and Batman; so, growing up, I did not know too much about Star Wars. In fact, my earliest memory of Star Wars is when The Phantom Menace was released in 1999. But I did not watch it because I was more interested

in The Mummy, which came out around the same time. I did finally get around to watching The Phantom Menace, about a month ago. Star Wars does have an impressive list of characters. For all of the good characters, there are as many evil ones. My favourite character is the psychologically disturbed Sith Lord, Darth Maul. His first appearance is in The Phantom Menace, where he causes all sorts of havoc. The first thing I was drawn to was his face. He looks really badass, with the black designs placed on his blood-red face. Then there are the little horns coming out of the sides of his head, which make him look even more sinister. Aside from the cool way Darth Maul looks, I really admire his determination. I won’t go into great detail, as I don’t want to give away too many spoilers for those who have never seen Star Wars. Let’s just say that Darth Maul is one of those characters who is always scheming. He finds himself getting betrayed, a few times, which drives him mad with rage, and consumed with getting revenge on his enemies. I also feel that the evil Darth Sideous played a huge part in causing most of Darth Maul’s strife. If Darth Sideous never kidnapped Darth Maul from his family, I feel

STAR WARS DAY! May the 4th Be With You.

he would have had a much more peaceful life, possibly. I suppose he could have decided to go on a quest for galactic domination, and rival Darth Sideous, but that’s a different conversation. What also amazes me about Darth Maul is how resourceful he is. He reinvented the famous Star Wars lightsaber by wielding two saber handles together, to create a double-edged saber. Also, when Darth Maul was cut in half by Obi Wan Kenobi, he survived! His body parts were cast down a deep shaft, with his upper torso being carted away to a planet that is essentially a junkyard. While focusing on his hatred for Obi, he was able to channel the dark forces and survive by using metal trash to create spider-like legs that attached to his body. From there, he went on a continuous quest to try and destroy Obi. Even though Darth Maul is considered to be one of the bad guys in Star Wars, he will always be my favourite. Although Yoda would be a close second, because his voice and wisdom are priceless. But I suspect that Yoda would not be so welcoming to those who cheer on a dark Sith Lord, even if the Sith Lord is more intelligent than him (insert slick smile here). ■

Daklaweidi (Killer Whale) regalia, with Johnson’s personal lightsaber bers like the Ewoks. That love also transitions to the land. Johnson compares The Force to the way Indigenous cultures have always treated the environment in which they live. From the Star Wars standpoint, Johnson talked about a Jedi’s power in relation to The Force and how, originally, it was about how an individual experiences all that is around him or her, allowing them to draw on its power. In later films, it became more about Midichlorians inside a Jedi (intelligent microscopic life forms that live symbiotically inside the cells of all living things) that dictate the strength of their relationship with The Force. “The way Obi-Wan describes it, in A New Hope, is the best way because that’s the Indigenous way of thinking. Everything surrounds us, is a part of us.” Johnson points out that Jedi are protectors of peace and are not soldiers. Another comparison he sees with his cultural history. “That’s what Indigenous people really are. If you think about it, anytime we have issues or protests, it’s for the land. It’s never for personal reasons. It’s never to benefit us [individually]. It’s to keep the land safe. We are land guardians. We are [the] Jedis of the land, is what I think we are.” The land also has the potential to help with healing, Johnson said. In today’s world, that is harder and harder because there are many vices that are available to people that can be destructive and turn them away from making that connection to the natural environment. He touches on alcohol and drug abuse, as major factors, but also video games, TV and movies, which are all examples of escapism that can skew the perception of reality, as he experienced

as a younger man who went through his own “party phase.” Johnson said, in many ways this helps him appreciate the story of DarthVader/Anakin Skywalker, and he sees how that same story plays out over and over in society—both for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Anakin wanted to be a Jedi so badly that he ended up losing his way and, after straying from the path of the Jedi, eventually became a Sith (the traditional opposite of the Jedi). “So many of us are ‘Anakin.’ Anakin Skywalker is us. We are always battling those inner demons, whether it be with religion, whether it be on social media, whether it be peer pressure or following peers.” Johnson said it’s much more difficult to follow the Jedi way. “To be a Jedi is to do what’s right and stand up for those in need. Not many people want to be a Jedi, so to speak. It’s so easy to be a Sith.” Johnson said First Nations have faced these issues for a long time, but there is always hope for things to improve. He added he’d like to see more Indigenous Peoples get back in touch with the land, in order to better heal. He compares that with the cycle of Anakin Skywalker who, after falling from the path, continues to make mistakes but has a chance for redemption and to return to where he began, with the help of his son Luke. Johnson said it’s been a difficult journey for Indigenous Peoples, too. The path has not always been clear. “We’re so hurt,” he said about intergenerational trauma. “And it’s hard to sometimes find people in your family—those ‘bright lights’ to guide us—because they’re broken

as well.” Johnson said he feels like we have all been on that journey, like Anakin, adding that some people don’t find themselves until they are much older (though a few may be lucky enough to find themselves when they are younger). But so much is lost, for so many people at such a young age, and not many can find their own identity. “A lot of children don’t know their identity. Don’t know their language. Don’t know their culture.” But he harkens back to his point about healing from the land and the ways of the Jedi. Johnson said the biggest way for people to heal is through traditional teachings and self-discovery. Johnson said he had his doubts about his role as a leader, when he was younger, but has since come to accept and welcome the role. He points out that it’s like that transition from Sith to Jedi. “It’s like I took off that Darth Vader mask.” Johnson said that combining Jedi with cultural learning has taken him to many places, both physically and mentally. “It’s taken me into a new, ideal way of thinking.” It has helped him forget about taking the easy way and take the time to learn and grow and reach for your goals. Going forward, he would like to see more and more Indigenous Peoples go after cultural learning and celebrate it personally in the arts, storytelling, in dance, and even in the world of TV and film. He added, if people realize, they can be masters of their own career. “Everybody always needs a story to tell.” ■

YUKON MINING and GEOLOGY WEEK May 1 - 7, 2022

Mining and mineral exploration is a major economic driver of Yukon’s private sector. Mining provides jobs for our families, friends and neighbours. It spurs many spinoff industries and jobs, and contributes to the quality of life we enjoy.

CAUCUS

This year we salute Yukoner Anne Lewis for her selection as the 2022 Trailblazer Award recipient from Women in Mining Canada. Anne is leading the way in Yukon’s mining sector as a Founder and President of Yukon Women in Mining. We encourage all Yukoners to learn more about mining and mineral exploration this week, and recognize the past, while looking ahead to the future.

Whitehorse Brunch Roundup ... cont’d from page 19 enough, they have gorgeous pastries for sale on weekends as well. I like a savoury brunch, and so my go-to is the Klondike crêpe. With its Brie, prosciutto, caramelized onions, and walnuts, it’s a bundle of my favourite things. The café has a bright, clean and open vibe. The air smells delicious and fills the energetic space. Like Gather, La Petite Maison also offers to-go orders and has a great online ordering portal. Bring a cooler bag (they keep things warm too!) and pick up your brunch and enjoy it in Rotary Park, or in farther-flung locales. There’s a spot on the Miles Canyon Road that I’ve had my eye on for when the road opens back up for the summer. Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. RAILWORK LOUNGE The third brunch spot in our trio is next door to the first two. Over at the Raven Inn, the Railwork Lounge is serving up sourdough pancakes. These aren’t just any sourdough pancakes—they’re made with sourdough starter that can trace its lineage back to 1898. If you’re not a pancake person, sourdough beignets are on the table as well. Folks who prefer a savoury brunch will enjoy a selection of eggs benedict varieties, including one featuring brisket; and a waffle breakfast with avocado, eggs and bacon, or salmon. All of these pair well with a light and fresh brunch cocktail offering. I absolutely swoon over the lime-green chairs in this place; the furniture and the vibe is bright and cheerful. The best table in the house is partially inside of a wall tent that’s set up indoors. It’s the indoor “blanket fort” we all wanted as kids. Brunch at the Railwork Lounge is a Sunday-only affair, though they do serve their daily breakfast menu on Saturdays. Some items are available to go, and the sidewalk patio should be reopening this summer. ■

Meet Ace!

Opening Reception May 6, 5pm-7pm

Ace is a 2-year-old, male, cane corso and mastiff mix. This lovable guy is very playful and loves to be with his people. He enjoys playing with the other dogs here, especially the females. He can be wary of new people, so socialization and training are important. He is very large and strong! He will need an experienced owner that is familiar with this kind of strong breed. He will need lots of daily exercise. He knows the basics like sit, shake a paw, lay down, and will settle quickly and patiently wait for his treat. He would do well in an active home without kids, and with proper introduction another dog. He can be selective about other male dogs, we do not know how he is with cats. If you are interested in adopting Ace please fill out an online application at humanesocietyyukon.ca. If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards him.

HEALING AND CONNECTION

Kay has lived in the North for eight years. She is interested in spiritual practice, healing, creativity and land connection. Between painting and writing, Kay makes sure to spend quality time in the wilderness that surrounds her. She is currently working on her first book, inspired by a kayaking pilgrimage she did in 2018 from Atlin to Dawson City.

WANDERING INTO THE KNOWN AND UNKNOWN

eous version of myself, I decided that it was time for me to get back out into the world, if only for a local excursion. I would revisit the trip I had made to Haines Junction, years prior, as a known starting point. The clouds were low as I drove into Haines Junction, so it was hard to see the impressive backdrop. Even so, I could still make out the base of the mountains and could sense their grandeur. I had rented the same small cabin that I had rented nearly a decade prior, The Wolf’s Den. I drove through town and found its location by memory. The cabin was almost exactly as I had left it, and I could almost feel my old dog’s spirit greeting me at the door as I entered. I started a fire in the wood stove, tucked into some food and snuggled with my two dogs. Returning to a place that I knew felt like a comfortable way for me to revisit my

relationship with wandering. It was evening, but my dogs didn’t let me rest after the drive. I looked down at their eager faces and put on their leashes. “Well guys, let the wandering begin!” We trundled back into the truck and headed down the Haines Highway in search of a hiking trail. Within 10 minutes, we came across the Auriol cross-country ski trail. I stopped the truck and we headed down the well-packed trail and into the rolling hills. The weather cleared and the setting sun glowed reassuringly through the trees, soothing my anxieties about being in a new country. The next morning brought cold weather and lark-blue skies. Although it was brisk, I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to check out the area. Today, I would make extra effort to leave the places I knew and venture more into the unknown. Instead of heading north towards cont’d on page 26...

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

Wandering ... cont’d from page 25 Burwash Landing and the Donjek River, I drove back down the Haines Highway and continued on past the Auriol Trail. The new surroundings unfolded all around me. Every corner and horizon brought with it a unique, never-seen-by-me collage of frozen lakes, trees and mountains. As I entered Kluane National Park, the mountains grew in size and splendour. Their stark white bodies contrasted sharply against the vibrant blue of the late-morning sky. They were radiant, and I could imagine bright, haloed light jumping off their peaks and ridges and into the blue. Some mountains grew together in clusters, as impermeable walls of beauty, while others held on to their unique characters by rising alone. I stopped at a pullout, overlooking the Tatshenshini River Valley, and read the information boards. They told of how the Tutchone used to live in the valley, harvesting salmon, and about the extensive trade relationships with the coastal Tlingit. That very highway itself had been a well-used overland trade route from that era. I felt humbled to know that my apparent “wandering” was on a wellestablished historic trail. The road may have been new to me but was so intimately known by the people who established the trade system, hundreds of years prior. After driving farther, the landscape became powerfully serene, covered in pure white snow and

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5

Sunset along the Auriol cross-country ski trail dotted with dark-green subalpine fir trees. I stopped the truck and walked out into the middle of the open valley with my dogs. Without many landmarks, the distances seemed deceivingly close. As I walked to what I thought was a nearby creek, I had lots of time to observe my surroundings. I noticed how each tree had a snow mound on its leeward side. The prevailing wind had deposited the snow in noticeable mounds behind each tree, creating a hummocked pattern across the landscape. I finally got to the creek and walked up a small hill on the other side, for a better view of the area. Pristine white mountains lined the horizon in all directions around the wide, snow-covered valley. In awe of the beauty, I snapped panoramic photos of the scenery before heading back to the truck. The highway continued between mountain ranges and through narrow valleys, before peaking at

Haines Summit. I decided to end my journey on this high note, immersed in white mountains and blue sky. Thankfully, I turned around just in time to get ahead of the snowplow. As I headed back along the highway, I noticed that the surroundings still looked beautiful but, for some reason, felt less magical. I began to realize that when I first ventured out, the surroundings were all new to me. Because they were unknown, I had been more present to take in their newness. When I was more in the moment, I was better able to see how truly beautiful and magical the surroundings were. As I retraced the way I had come, it felt like my surroundings were known to me, so I engaged less with them and no longer saw them for what they truly were. Recognizing this, I tried to bring my attention to the mountains directly in front of me, to see them again, as if for the first time. For a moment, I saw how truly magical and beautiful they were, but as I relaxed my effort, they faded away into a backdrop. I wonder if I could experience my life as new, in each moment, as if it were unknown? Well, maybe it is unknown, each moment is new to me. I continued along the highway, mulling over these realizations. Eventually, the dramatic mountainous landscape changed back into thick forest and rolling hills. An hour passed and I descended the hill into Haines Junction. Mount Martha Black rose dramatically on the horizon to my left. Unlike yesterday, when it was invisible and covered in clouds, today it looked astounding. I thought back to my contemplations on the drive, about how the newness of the unknown helped me see things as they truly were. I wonder how I would feel waking up to this mountain each morning? Would I come to know the mountain so well that I would no longer see her magic? Or does the mountain wander often enough behind the clouds and into the unknown that, upon her return, I would continue to greet her as if for the very first time? ■
