The Northern Gaze features short comics written and drawn by nine artists. The 60-ish page volume shows some of the scope and breadth of comic art created in the North.

For example, veteran artist Chris Caldwell’s black-and-white drawings tell the humorous story of a couple of bored dads going ice fishing in the spring. Cole Pauls uses blue tones and an icy script to convey the frigid, snowy world that his character flies through on

In her free time, there’s noth ing she loves more than hitting the trails with her bike and her human and canine buddies.

“I had been toying around with the idea of a press called Hecate Press, for a little bit, but once I got the grant for the anthology, I was like, ‘Well, I guess I’m doing this thing.’”

“I wanted there to be some sort of comics anthology cen tered around northern stories, for a couple of years, but it really started when I applied for and got a [Culture Quest] grant in 2020, in the fall,” explained Edgar.

They believe that comics are a way to connect through shared northern experiences. This in cludes “being remote, rural, very cold, often seen by city centers as a place of extraction, and there’s sort of an objectifica tion in that,” Edgar pointed out. “Whereas all of these places are living places, living cultures that have been here for thousands of years.”Part of Edgar’s interest in pro ducing the anthology is to deny the objectification of northern places by having artists tell stor ies on their own terms, without catering to a southern audience.

“You, too, can create your own comics,” Edgar said. “It’s doable, it’sEdgarpossible.”encourages anyone who is making comics to share their work with them. They’re not tak ing submissions right now, but they love to see what people are doing.

Hecate Press, a stepping stone for northern comic artists cont’d from pg 2 ClientEditorialTeamCareTeamDesignTeamAdminTeam Chris

By providing opportunities for northern comic artists, Edgar hopes to get comics “more preva lent in the North.” They would like to see something similar to the comic communities in the South, which are typically inclu sive and welcoming.

Each mini comic tells a unique story in an inventive way. Lia Fabre-Dimsdale uses simple draw ings and shades of green and blue for a sci-fi tale called Big Sister: Moon Feet. Sally DeMerchant’s Winter Guests/Gifts celebrates the healing power of taking on two sled dogs and learning to skijor with them. In Stopping By Woods, Olivia Akeeshoo Chislett’s characters experience a tragic accident and a magical healing in the woods.

“If you make comics, you’re kind of already in,” Edgar said. “The comics community is notori ously very friendly.”

Edgar describes themself as a very “DIY person,” and they hope to inspire others to start similar projects in their communities; for example, small presses and galleries. They presented a work shop on small presses and selfpublishing at the Print & Publish ing Festival (Dawson), in June. The festival also offered other comics-related workshops for folks interested in exploring the art form.

“It’s the ‘chillest’ art world.”

Edgar emphasizes that comics are first and foremost about story telling; being an amazing drawer is not a prerequisite.

“It’s not an insular, closed cir cle [that] you need to know the password to,” Edgar said.

Folks can purchase The North ern Gaze and the six small comics from hecatepress.bigcartel.com or from Titan Gaming & Collect ables, in Whitehorse. n Cassandra

paid opportunities for comic art ists. They see their micro-press as a “stepping stone” for artists, a place where they can gain con fidence and perhaps submit work to larger presses.

They would eventually like to make connections in other north ern places like Nunavik and Lab rador.

In September, 2021, Edgar received another Culture Quest grant for their second Hecate Press project. This time, the press put out a series of small comic books by six comic artists.

“What happens when the North makes content for The North ern Gaze?” Edgar asked in their editor’s statement for The North ern Gaze: a comics anthology

I think mostly I was scared. The woods are no joke, and having no idea where you are didn’t help. It also didn’t help that in my second year of biking I thought I would get better. For me, mountain biking was one way that my husband and I built a pretty good relationship, and I think this can apply to any thing that requires problem solv ing—from stressful situations and exhaustion, to differing values and opinions.Ihadbeen mountain biking one summer before I met my husband, and all I can say is I sucked. Like, I could barely walk my bike down

He would, of course, apolo gize, but then I’d be so angry at him and so unmotivated and frus trated that I’d walk in a strop (temper tantrum), for kilometres, to the end of the trail.

This was the moment Ryan started to learn to keep com ments to himself and use his “in sideOurvoice.”first year biking together wasn’t the best. He was really fast and knew the trails better than me and would scoot off into the woods.

Meanwhile, I could barely make it, huffing and puffing and walking most of the trails. I would go into a fit of rage whenever he would go past a fork in the trail and I had no idea where I was supposed to go. He would come back and be like, “What’s up?”

Ryan had more faith in my abilities than me (and still does). He started taking me on difficult trails. “See that rock? You can totally do this,” he would say. “No!” was my typical response. Again, the fear inside of me. I had fallen a few times and hurt myself. I’m a woman in my thirties, learn ing to mountain bike … I’m “old.” Things hurt! It’s hard … so many excuses. But I wouldn’t even try.

What we learned was to speak up earlier and to be clear on ex

pectations (something Ryan wants to do, maybe I don’t). What really helped was, in the winter I taught Ryan how to downhill ski and, with the teacher-learner process swapped, we realized we both had different teaching and learning styles and abilities.

This year I rode my fat bike more than I skied or hiked, and I also commuted to work in the spring, as the trails melted.

Now, when we get to something scary, I take time to look at it in stead of saying no. And Ryan will accept if I’m OK trying it or not (watching him or moving on).

Mountain biking, or any sport, really, is a great way to learn how to work together and eventually have fun. For some of us (me) it takes longer than most to learn new things! n

Home is where the heat is.

Goade’s own love of the land shines through in her stunning watercolour and mixed-media illustrations. Little forest crea tures are hidden among leaves and branches, and hints of the young girl’s Tlingit ancestors can be glimpsed behind trees. Her paintings seem to glow from with in, pulling us into a magical, lush world of plants and water and ber ries. Everything is alive and filled with spirit: the ocean waves, the temperate rainforest and the clouds hanging low with rain.

As the outside temperatures begin to drop, you can count on Chieftain Energy to be a reliable safe source for home heating oil.

The last two pages include a note from the author; and there, Michaela Goade says that, for her, berry picking is medicine. I agree. Picking berries brings me into the present moment in a way that few other things do. It makes me aware of my surroundings, opens my eyes, quiets my mind and con nects me with the earth below my feet and with the people around me. I think, somewhere deep in side of us all, we connect to an ancient remembering when we go out into the forest. Our ancestors, no matter where they were from, most likely gathered berries, too, cherishing their sweetness (prob ably even more than we do now) in a time before refined sugars.

Growing up, I remember learning about the different wild berries from my mom. The sweet wild strawberries were always the first ones to appear in summer. Soapberries would start to turn red in July and were a favourite treat for the bears after a spring time diet of dandelions, willow catkins, roots and grasses. Even tually came the Saskatoons, which I always liked to eat fresh and per sonally preferred to the slightly sour wild blueberries growing near Fraser. Saskatoons felt like loyal friends—filled with sweetness and always found not far from home. Wandering through the forest or up into the mountains, we’d come across juicy mossberries (a.k.a. crowberries) and tiny bil berries and the occasional delight ful nagoonberry. The wild raspber ries were always ripe before the ones in the garden and had a much stronger flavour than the domes ticated varieties. Black currants could sometimes be found hidden near streams and often revealed their presence by the unique fra grance their leaves released into the air as we walked by.

Transforming Mother Earth’s sweet gifts into jams and muffins, pies and crumbles, always makes me think of my mom. Sometimes I wish that I had paid more atten tion when she taught me these things, years ago, and sometimes I still have to call her to ask about the steps I’ve forgotten. There’s something about the things we make from wild berries that begs to be shared. Gifts from nature become gifts between friends: bags of cranberries shared with our Elders who can’t go out and pick anymore, blueberry muf fins enjoyed over a cup of tea, or a few jars of jam exchanged between friends and family. Without engine oil, serious damage can occur in a very short amount of time. Modern engine oils prevent blockages and contaminants from restricting oil flow. Oil breaks down and loses its properties over time, you should always check your oil on a regular basis. We recommend every 10,000km to 20,000km. Some circumstances, may require more frequent changes. For example if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions like 4wding, towing, racing, or excessive stop-start driving.

The Devil is an extremely com plex card. We won’t cover all of the layers of this card right now, but we can safely say the appear ance of The Devil in our reading reminds us that we are respon sible for how we act on our emotions. Berry Song is a story for us all. n

Berry Song invites us, young and old, to live in reciprocity, to be joyful, to say Gunalchéesh, to not take more than what we need, to learn sustainable harvesting practices, to share the forest with our human and non-human rela tives, to listen to the land and to not take what we’re given for granted. It asks us to coexist in re spect and balance with the land. The final lesson that the grand mother in the story shares with her granddaughter is this: “We are part of the land as the land is a part of us.” We come from the land and we go back to the land. We are not separate from it, and it’s our responsibility to care for it and protect it. It’s a beautiful message shared within the deceiv ingly simple format of a children’s book.

Plated Steak Tartare

• 2 Tbsp capers

My bad day came on day 5, a 17-K day with a big treat in the middle, a stop at the Crab Shack, at Nitinaht Narrows, for crab and panfried fish and maybe even a beer. I woke up with everything hurting and a churning gut from five days of reconstituted dried food. Now, Matt was a fine and careful cook; he made all our meals from scratch and dried them himself. But dried food is dried food, and after five days, I couldn’t face breakfast. Bad mistake.

4. Remove salmon filets to a serving plate, where it will continue cooking. Add remaining butter to the frying pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until butter is browned, being careful not to burn the butter.

Ingredients:

• 2 Tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tsp grated lemon zest

5. Remove pan from heat and add lemon juice, zest and capers, stirring to combine.

column with Michele Genest

I ordered a baked potato, downed an orange Gatorade and sat stunned on a stump while everyone else cracked beers and celebrated: Susan had found new boots. Shelley of the Crab Shack offered to sell her the brand-new size-8 Salomons, right off her feet (the fourth time this summer she’d rescued a hiker that way). Susan wept, and everyone cheered.

Instructions:

2. Place potatoes directly on a rack set in the middle of the oven. Bake for about 1 hour, until the insides are thoroughly cooked, testing by poking with a fork. If the fork slides in easily, they’re done.

1. Preheat oven to 425℉. Wash potatoes and dry them with paper tow el. Coat potatoes with olive oil—the easiest way to do this is with your hands, rubbing oil over each one. Sprinkle with kosher salt. Prick skins two or three times with a fork.

We all had hard days; days our bodies failed us. On day 2, my friend Marg didn’t drink enough water and stumbled into camp with a raging headache and a com plete inability to care for herself. Her niece helped her.

4. Mix butter and milk thoroughly into the potato. Stir in cheese, onions and bacon. Spoon the mixture back into the shells, return to the oven and bake until the tops are just beginning to brown. Remove from the oven and serve. Makes 8 servings. n

took a few pictures and made no notes—I couldn’t spare the attention. For the first three days, I talked to myself in the vocative case: “Stay focussed. Step there, onto that slippery root. Pay attention! Aim for that rhom boid of dirt between those roots. Use your pole. Put your hand on that rock. Heave!”

1. Pat filets dry with a paper towel and sprinkle it with salt and pepper.

2. Heat oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a medium-sized cast-iron frying pan, over medium heat. When butter is sizzling, place filets in pan, skin-side down. Cook for 4 minutes.

• 4 large baking potatoes

3. Remove potatoes from the oven and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Slice each one in half lengthwise. When cool enough to handle, scoop the insides into a bowl, leaving a shell about 1/4-inch thick

STUFFED BAKED POTATOES

I

The thing about the West Coast Trail is that footing is precarious. There are a hundred ways to have a bad accident, and rescue is dif ficult. Your body is your vehicle— your only way out—and you have to keep it working (pulled Achilles tendons, sore IT bands and strained knees notwithstanding). Only your legs will get you up those ladders; only your back can carry that pack.

Ingredients:

That same day, my tentmate Susan had an equipment fail: the soles fell off her boots. She and

pounds. We clambered up hills of tree roots, inched across rock faces and slithered down muddy slopes. We arrived at our first camp in the rain and learned the joy of wet sand in our tents, in our boots, between our teeth.

I was the last turtle in the herd that day, suffering a thousand small humiliations that nobody saw—slipping, stumbling, getting stuck under a log. By the time we reached the crab shack, I was ex hausted, close to tears and com pletely without appetite.

• 5 Tbsp butter, divided

GATHER

Helped by Gatorade, a baked potato and tidbits of crab and panfried haddock from other people’s plates, my spirits rose and my legs miraculously stopped hurting. Then Susan did me a great kind ness. Uplifted by her new boots, she offered to carry our tent. Then it was my turn to weep.

CRAB SHACK-INSPIRED PAN-COOKED SALMON FILETS WITH BROWN BUTTER, LEMON AND CAPERS

Matt jerry-rigged a system of cord and duct tape to keep her boots together. Other hikers donated duct tape and, on day 4, life-sav ing zip ties. Susan coped by leading the pack, not talking much, staying alone and focussed. I can only im agine the strength of mind it took for her to keep going.

We were eight women and one guide. Our guide, Matt, said, “For get everything you know about time and distance. This is not Banff.” On the first day, it took us eight hours to hike six kilometres. Our average pack weight was 35

• 1.5 lbs filet of sockeye sal mon, skin on, sliced into six 4-oz servings

On day 4, things got easier—a long beach walk amongst tidal pools harbouring starfish, anemones and purple sea urchins. Sun and a cool breeze. Pelicans diving for fish. But even during the difficult days, the rewards were immense—the feel ing of accomplishment after ne gotiating slippery boulders for two kilometres. The sight of a thousand gulls lifting, all at once, white and gold in the sun. Purple sky, as the sun went down and the moon rose.

At this stage in his life, Irving said the nationally televised com petition was a good next step.

“I proposed the suggestion to my (at the time) manager, and they strongly suggested I not pass up the opportunity. Two weeks later, I packed up my life, jumped on a Greyhound and went west, to Tofino, to work at the Pointe Res taurant at The Wickaninnish Inn.”

As if the aforementioned ex perience isn’t exciting enough, Irving has recently wrapped up a competitive stint on Top Chef Canada (on The Food Network), where he faces off against other

“In 2001, I was presented with an opportunity to work in a pro fessional kitchen in a West Coast town called Tofino, a place I’ve never been or heard of for that matter,” he said.

espite having an im pressive career that has spanned over two dec ades, including major roles with Chef Gordon Ramsey, preparing

Irving also said he relied on decades of training and on his confidence in his abilities, to bring something special to the competi tion.“I had already mentally pre pared myself for what was to come.”

A friend of Irving’s who was working in the restaurant as a sommelier, at the time, suggested he send a résumé to work in the kitchen. Irving took the idea to his current employer and was offered strong support.

Irving’s love of food and cook ing really got going 22 years ago when he was an aspiring chef, in Calgary, and dreaming of his next steps in life.

RECIPE:

“Top Chef is the way to do it,” he said, adding that the exposure is invaluable.Irvingsaid he feels like he is where he is meant to be and that his hard work and determination have served him well. His advice for other up-and-coming chefs is simple.“You gotta put your work in. You gotta pay your dues.”

2. Mix water, berries, zest and juice of orange.

Top Chef Canada will air Mon days, beginning September 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Food Network Canada. n

On top of the pudding put a spoonful of Saskatoon-berry jam, a spoonful of crumble, a dollop of honeycomb and garnish with 1 or 2 nasturtium leaves.

• 1/2 cup sugar

4. Strain the liquid through a mesh sieve, and let rest until it is cool to the touch.

4. Mix pectin and sugar together and cook for 30 minutes, or until desired consistency.

During his time in school, Irving found himself advancing quickly and capitalizing on his natural culinary skill sets. He advanced so much that he found himself vol unteering his free time assisting in amateur cooking classes at the school in his downtime.

“My heart sank immediately because I had a one-way ticket to London and was banking on work ing immediately. Without a paid position, I didn’t have the means to support myself in a big, new, scary city overseas,” Irving said.

INGREDIENTS:

5. Once the liquid is cool, fold in the whipped cream, and ensure is fully mixed.

“In 2011, I did just that and cut my ties with the restaurant. I was headhunted to work on a private 60m superyacht in the south of France. I spent the remainder of the year cruising around the Medi terranean, cooking for the owners and their guests.”

“I was hungry, and eager to learn more and more. I wanted to further my repertoire, so I used my time in Tofino to look into culinary schools in the Lower Mainland. Being from the Yukon, I was given access to grants for my education at Dubrulle, a private, internationally accredited culin ary college in Vancouver. In Janu ary 2004, I packed up and moved to Vancouver and started my oneyear program at Dubrulle.”

“I knocked on the back door, unsure whether or not to expect Gordon himself to answer,” Irv ing said. “Luckily it was one of his head chefs. I explained my circumstance, showed him my visa and my knives, in hand, and told him I was ready to work. He looked me up and down, told me to wait one moment.”

Irving said the tenure ended after the passing of the yacht’s owner. His desire to stay there made him reach out to some old colleagues with the Gordon Ram say Group, and before he knew it, he found himself back in the fold as an executive senior sous chef.

“I also started working directly with Gordon on multiple TV pro ductions. It was then that Gordon and I developed a personal rep ertoire, and at that time he sent me to work with his close family friends, the Beckham family. It was during this time that Irving began to focus his mind on French cuisine and began thinking of how he might move to France to learn. It was Hawksworth who suggested, instead, that Irving consider London, as opportun ities to work in the U.K. would be better. Hawksworth helped Irv ing secure a position in London’s Michelin-star restaurant, Le Gav roche. Unfortunately for Irving, he arrived in London only to learn the position had been filled, out of ne cessity, a month earlier.

“I spent nearly three years based in Banff,” Irving said, adding that the Yukon was always there at the back of his mind. “There was always a draw for me to come back home to the Yukon because there was property that I had a special connection to, that I knew that I wanted to inquire about.”

Irving said that the dream to build a luxury fine-dining estab lishment in the North has been a dream for a long time.

Top Chef returns to The Food Network for its 10th season and will celebrate the impact and influ ence that Canadian Top Chefs have had on the country’s restaurant industry.Theshow will feature chefs as they faceoff in brand-new chal lenges, an exciting new twist de signed to shake up the competi tion and, for the first time ever, Top Chef Canada is going inter national, with a trip to one of the world’s most-exciting culinary des tinations for the finale.

It was there he met acclaimed Vancouver Chef David Hawks worth, who offered Irving a job in his restaurant called West Restau rant (at that time), on South Gran ville“WithoutIsland. hesitation, I accepted his offer,” said Irving. “For the rest of the year, I went to school full-time in the mornings and left school to work full-time in the evenings at West.”

3. Pour the boiled milk over top of the cold milk and gelatin mixture, slowly whisking to incorporate both together.

He added that when you have something you care about, the best course of action is to go for it and seek out what excites you.

“After my time in Banff, I came back to Whitehorse to start my investigation and inquiry into this specific piece of property. But research doesn’t always pay the bills, so I had to rely on my love of travel and cooking to take me where I needed to go.

“So for the past few years, I have been a ‘gun for hire,’ trav elling to the highest bidder, doing what I do best—cooking, teaching, training and development. Trav elling when needed, but always coming home to continue follow ing the dream of acquiring this property, to eventually building a world-class, world-renowned lux uryHisresort.”recent competition on Top Chef Canada has also helped fill in that time between dreams and making those dreams a reality. In 2015, Irving had decided it was time, again, to try some greener pastures, and after dis cussing options with a close friend, he set his sights on Thailand—to help launch a new campaign with the Marriott Hotel Group—and worked in Bangkok while helping promote the Marriott brand. Just as quickly, Irving found himself on his way to Sydney, Australia, to do more promotional work. After a year he was on the move again, this time to Hong Kong where he finished his time with Marriott and at its flagship, JW Marriott.

Irving also said it was a bit of a nervous wait. “He returned maybe 15 or 20 minutes later, as I stood nervously outside. He handed me a paper with an address and a name and told me that the HR manager was waiting for me at the Gordon Ramsay head office, only another 15 or 20-minute walk away. I hus tled to the office, met with a very lovely woman who interviewed me on the spot, and I started the next morning.”Twoyears later and brimming with experience, Irving returned to Canada and began a series of successful professional jobs in Vancouver, which included helping to launch a new restaurant where he was the patron chef from 2008–2010. By the following year, he was ready to head back to Europe.

In the end, “the team faded, so did the Insider. My big blue bin keeps it from disappearing entire ly. Everybody went their separate ways. Years later, I’d like to thank them all.”

There’sguide.one other glitch in the book that I feel the need to cor rect. On page 51, writing about his early days on the Insider, Ross writes that the team was busy dropping the paper into mailboxes all over Theretown.are no mailboxes at in dividual homes in Dawson. During that period, the Post Office was in the Federal Building on Fifth Av enue, across the street from the Robert Service School.

Chris returned to Dawson, sev eral years later, and hooked up with Greg Karias, who was just starting Harper Street Publishing at the time, having put out the first couple of issues of his sum mer tourist publication (eventu ally retitled The Last Great Road Trip) at the Sun offices while pay ing us in volunteer office and lay out work.

uch of Christopher Ross’s history of his involve ment with Harper Street Publishing is very much his own story. It’s interesting and touch ing in a lot of ways. Much of it I can neither confirm nor critique, as I watched what he calls “the unravelling” of the Dawson City Insider with a cautious and some what competitive eye from the Waterfront Building, which is where the Klondike Sun was pro duced at the time.

Ross writes about things that are still features for newly arrived workers in Dawson now: finding a place to live, cook, shower and do laundry, for instance.

Ross provides a sampling of many of the quirky columns that gave the Insider its unique flavour, including an item, “The Market Report,” by Dawson’s former may or, Wayne Potoroka.

The Unraveling of the Dawson City Insider

Much to our pleasure, they bought the idea and we had a great summer with them. Caroline went from us to the Whitehorse Star, for several years, where editor Jim Butler still recalls her fondly.

Ross has a lot of good memories of the Insider and of Dawson, a place he likes to return to as often as possible. While the paper was a bit of a thorn in my side during its two-year existence, I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic as Ross chronicled the steps that led to its decline and end.

He puts its demise down to its creators trying to do too much, too fast, and trying to juggle too many balls with not enough hands.

In the end, that seems to be the real point of Ross writing this book and, aside from a few factual gaffs, that makes it worth it. n

by Christopher Ross Vanguard Press

I met Christopher, who was then Chris Beacom, in 1994, when he and Caroline Murray submit ted resumés to the Klondike Sun and competed for the federally funded summer student position we were hoping to fill. Kathy Gates and I were the co-editors at the time. We interviewed them, liked them both and pitched to them the notion that we would split the job down the middle and encour age them to find additional work to make up the other half of their financial needs.

Any small newspaper has a similar list of issues to deal with: equipment breakdowns, photo copy problems, computer fail ure, software glitches and, in the 1990s, serious issues with internet stability and bandwidth.

Karias, who is called “Zig,” in this book, decided he wanted to start his own weekly paper. He had approached us about selling our not-for-profit operation to him, but the office-space rental deal we had with the City of Dawson made that impossible. The short-lived Centennial Post weekly had made a real dent in our advertising rev enue during the Gold Rush Centen nial, years before it vanished, so we weren’t terribly happy to see another paper appearing.

Onit.page 39 he says the Sun had just fired an editor and hired Caroline to fill that post while giv ing him a smaller slice of the pie. We had just lost a valued volunteer at that point, but since I was the continuing editor until just over two years ago, and was one of the people who wrote Chris’s and Caro line’s paycheques in 1994, I think my memory is the better one.

What is the most-interesting thing/project you have worked on?

The most-fun task that I’ve had at work has been installing cab inets. Being involved in finishing something that everyone will see, every day, and making it look per fect, is always rewarding. n

Snowy is medium-sized and as huskies do will need daily exercise for her mind and body. She would do best in an adventurous home that is looking for a loving and playful new companion, Snowy loves being showered with pets and affection. Snowy would do well in a home with children and another dog to keep her company when the human family members have to go to work or school. We do not know how she is with cats.

songs from her album Ever Ahead, in dog parks across Canada. The idea to play music in dog parks was inspired by her furry friend, of course (and by the pandemic).

The musician said that it’s been amazing to bring her dog along to every show, during her tour, and to have her burn some energy. “There’s actually a song on my album about an unfortunate mo ment when Oblio was attacked during our first tour in 2016: the lyrics in ‘Badlands’ consider how to move forward with this trauma we both carry.” In “Badlands” she describes the horrific incident when her dog was attacked by another dog and she had to get between them: “I would learn to drive a car with one hand, if it meant I could go with you. How could I go through life with both my hands and not have you to hold on to,” O’Neil sings in “Badlands” … describing her love for Oblio.

Her Unleashed Tour isn’t only lovely for listeners, but for her and her dog, as well: “Re-social izing Oblio in various dog parks, with so many new dog friends, has been very healing for the both of us.”

Many musicians suffered during the pandemic because concerts were cancelled or rescheduled. O’Neil felt lucky that she was able to go on a short northern tour that kicked off with Folk on the Rocks, in Yellowknife, last summer she said.“I’m so thankful that my com munity’s numbers were quite low and that Dawson City offered a few opportunities to perform live.” She was also grateful for taking part in some virtual projects such as Whitehorse Independent The atre’s Sing Along or the Friends of the Palace Grand Society’s En counters of the Yukon radio plays. She added that she was stream ing performances during the pan demic. “Investing in a ring light was probably the best pandemic

“I am constantly in awe of Oblio’s strength when facing ob stacles, and of her passion for ad venture,” the musician said. She describes her dog as adaptive, curious and brave. “All of these qualities make for an excellent road-trip sidekick. She’s barked away unsavoury characters in mo tel corridors, and she’s offered a weighted paw on my shoulder on

As her tour will come to an end in late September, she says that it has been lovely so far. People were enjoying listening to her music, and sometimes dogs would bark a bit. “Isn’t it lovely to not have to leave your dog at home when going to see a show?”

purchase because I was able to stream performances remotely for BreakOut West, Winterfolk Blues and Roots Festival, Folk Music Ontario, and some Instagram Live shows.”

O’Neil has driven across Can ada, many times, to visit her family in Ontario where she grew up. It was behind the wheel when she felt inspired. A lot of the songs are about her dog, her truck and her mental state while travelling. With the dog, she ended up at emergency vet visits; and with the truck, there were some surprise mechanic appointments between the Yukon and Ontario. O’Neil turned the challenges she had to face on the road into songs: “Our stories culminated in an album that’s about fixing, accepting and moving on. Taking care of my road dog inspired that strength and passion in me.”

f the last two years have taught me anything, it’s to not get too attached to ori ginal ideas. Ideas are not a finite resource and sometimes we can end up in a more-interesting place than where we first imagined,” Dawson-based folk musician Joey O’Neil said.

O’Neil said she wanted to create a more-flexible tour that could han dle whatever Covid would throw her way. “I knew that an outdoor series of shows, with social-dis tancing abilities, would be the best-possible route. I always try to stay ‘on brand,’ while brainstorm ing, and aim to place my songs in a context or space that helps to further the music’s message.

for one last journey to the Klon dike. In the years since the boat had been retired, a new bridge had been erected at Carmacks, as part of the North Klondike High way construction. Even though the S.S. Keno was the smallest of the big paddlewheelers, there was nowhere near enough clear ance to pass under the new struc ture without some ingenuity and hard work. In preparation for the trip, the wheelhouse (situated at the very top of the boat) was re moved to a lower deck, and the smoke stack was hinged to allow it to drop while passing under neath. In August of 1960, piloted by expert river master Frank Slim, the Keno made it under the bridge, with little space to spare, and continued to its final resting place in Dawson.

For the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin, and later on for the newcomers who came to Dawson City, life has always been intimately con nected to the Yukon River. The S.S. Keno illustrates an example of technology that has changed and affected how the people in Dawson connect to the land.

S.S. KENO TURNS 100 with Kyla MacArthur

n Saturday, August 27, the waterfront in Daw son City at the S.S. Keno National Historic Site was flood ed with people. At 1 p.m., after over two years of silence, the big and very loud steam whistle let off its familiar and iconic cry and beckoned townsfolk and visitors, alike, to the river’s edge where the S.S. Keno has been drydocked since 1960. This August marked the 100th anniversary of the littlest paddlewheeler in the British Yukon Navigation Company fleet. Over 300 people visited the site during the celebration event. There was music, kids’ activities, tributes to the boat and a mem ory board where folks could share their own favourite stories about the Keno. Parks Canada inter preters were on hand to answer questions, as visitors meandered through the freight and passenger decks of the 100-year-old paddle wheeler.

Constructed in 1922, the S.S. Keno was a purpose-built ves sel—made primarily to navigate the shallow waters, along the Stewart River, while hauling the silver, lead and zinc ore that was coming out of the Mayo district. The boat also made the Dawson to Whitehorse return trip often in its 30 years of service and was usually the first boat into Dawson in the spring—a cause for cele bration for the locals who had braved the long, cold winter in theWhenKlondike.itwas decided that the S.S. Keno would live out its days as a national historic site in Daw son City, preparations were made

It’s been said that you could smell oranges wafting down the river valley ahead of the first paddlewheeler. There were no oranges at the event on Saturday, but there were cupcakes and a lot of smiles. n

It’s no wonder that so many gathered to mark the anniversary of the S.S. Keno. The feeling was festive at the site this weekend— reminiscent of the days when the whole community gathered on the waterfront, eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring’s first boat full of supplies and visitors.

Parks Canada has been work ing, since then, to restore and maintain the S.S. Keno. Inter pretive programs are offered on-board during the summer, and the familiar steam whistle marks the day at noon and at 5 o’clock.
